The 119th Malvern A&P Association Show will be held at the Sheffield Domain on March 24. Show president, Guy Bassett, said his involvement with the association, “just kind of happened”. “Initially, I got strong-armed into being involved after I got rung up the day

before the 2004 winter feed competition at the show, when the person running it got sick. I’ve been on the committee since 2004, mainly with the winter feed competition, but hadn’t had much to do with organising the show until about four years ago, when time allowed for more involvement.”

The Sheffield based Bassett family have run a contract seed drilling and planting business for 17 years and, until recently, have been leasing a cropping farm, growing a variety of seed and grain crops.

Lincoln is reintroducing a unique Parks and Outdoor Recreation major and DOC will fund seven scholarships for students enrolled in this year’s first intake of the programme. The major, which was previously offered from 2008 to 2014, is the only one of its kind offered in New Zealand. It is designed to equip students for roles in parks and reserves management, nature-based tourism, visitor services and recreation policy

or planning. “Good management of our iconic natural landscapes and ecosystems is key to the success of the visitor industry. These skills are desperately needed to manage the increase in visitors,” DOC DirectorGeneral, Lou Sanson said. Lincoln University Parks and Recreation senior lecturer, Stephen Espiner, said recent research has highlighted a pressing need for more skilled workers. 

Intersection safety awareness campaign kicks off Selwyn motorists are being reminded of the need to take care at intersections through a new Selwyn District Council road safety campaign.

 In Selwyn 40% of all motor vehicle accidents take place at intersections

The ‘What’s the cost’ campaign aims to raise awareness by profiling the price of failing to stop or give way at intersections. Of the crashes in Selwyn, 40% take place at intersections. From 2013 to 2017, 571 crashes occurred at intersections within the district, and of these 216 crashes involved an injury, with eight fatalities recorded. In Selwyn 61% of intersection crashes are caused by failing to stop or give way. Poor driver observation is a factor in 49% of all intersection crashes. Senior Sergeant Pete Stills of the New Zealand Police said stopping means a

vehicle’s wheels do not move at all. “We encourage people to come to a complete stop, to not start looking until after they have stopped and to have a good hard look to ensure that if there is a motorcycle or a dark coloured vehicle they see it. “We encourage people to travel with their lights on to make sure they are visible to others,” he says. Senior Sergeant Stills, said Selwyn Police will be supporting the ‘What’s the cost’ campaign by monitoring intersections and will be issuing tickets and demerits to motorists who fail to stop or give way at intersections. 

Visitor numbers boost growth

Growing numbers of visitors to Selwyn has helped the district’s economy to strengthen during the latter part of 2017 according to economic analysts Infometrics.

Three Rolleston couples have combined their talents to help establish the town’s first theatre group. Phil Dean and Courtney Hyde, along with Darren and Carla Weber, and Glen and Claire Clark, are behind the establishment of CentreStage Rolleston, which is already planning its first production. The three couples have been previously involved in other Selwyn theatre groups including Kirwee Players, as well as having experience with other theatre groups in and around Christchurch. Phil Dean, policeman by day and director by night, said as they all lived in Rolleston ‘we thought the town needed its own theatre group’. “While we had all been working with Kirwee Players over the last couple of years we wanted to do something in our own community. “We want to provide a creative outlet for Rolleston--  Phil Dean is one of the founders of Rolleston’s first theatre group Centre Stage based performers.” Mr Dean said they started up a “Any theatre group would love to have Facebook page and more than 200 its own venue and we will be working with people had registered their interest. the council and other groups to see if The group has already selected their we can establish a performance space. first production, the Tim Rice and Andrew “With theatre we can work with any Lloyd Webber musical Joseph and the performance space we can get. This month, the Year 13 history class from Darfield High School had the privilege of going to Akaroa for the day to learn about the history of Ngai Tahu and Ngati Toa.

 Remington Evans eyes up lunch during the Darfield High School trip to Akaroa

Upon arrival, we were greeted by one of the Akaroa Area School students and had a lovely morning tea. Afterwards, we went to Red House Bay/Takapuneke and learnt about the history of the Elizabeth incident and how the trading went, and we saw evidence of a hangi that took place in the 1800s. We went on a walk afterwards to the Britomart Memorial and learnt about the history that took place and the moment that the South Island became a British colony. This was followed by a trip to the

Akaroa Museum, where we watched a mini-documentary about how Akaroa was established. Lunch was provided by the Akaroa students and was absolutely delicious, complete with fresh crayfish and paua plucked from Akaroa Harbour. This was followed by our trip to the Onawe Peninsula. Here we learnt how Te Rauparaha travelled down from the North Island and brought 70 waka to the peninsula, where he killed Ngai Tahu people. Some reports estimate around 600 Ngai Tahu died. 

THE RECORD

Weedons take down champions Weedons has downed defending champions Sefton in the latest round of one day cricket action. An outstanding unbroken eighth wicket partnership between Josh Watson and Jack Parker saw Weedons tip over Sefton in a CRV Ambreed Country premier competition match played on Saturday. Lance Taylor produced an excellent innings of 52 off 74 balls, but Sefton were rolled out for 143 runs inside 42 overs, with Fraser Austin taking 3/30. In reply, Sefton felt they had the game safe when reducing Weedons to 87/8 in the 34th over. Josh Watson and Jack Parker, however, had other ideas, putting together an unbeaten 58 runs to see their side home with two overs to spare. At Darfield, another tough wicket affected by late week rain saw Darfield South Malvern’s meagre 105 proving 20 runs too many for visiting Southbrook.

On Sunday, Oxford-Rangiora lost the toss and were put into bat by Lincoln, who opened the bowling with Canterbury paceman Kyle Jamieson. The Oxford top order soon collapsed but it was Mark Elliott who was the main destroyer, claiming 4/7 off his seven overs as Oxford was eventually bundled out for just 81. Oxford managed a few early wickets through Fergus Fairbairn (2/9 off 5) while Joel Harden blasted 20. But a middle order collapse at the hands of Mark Murphy (4/22) and Mitchell Power (2/14) reduced Lincoln to 63/9, before Jeremy Benton batted well finishing 22 not out and getting Lincoln home in a low-scoring nailbiter. Meanwhile, Cheviot has been crowned country cricket’s T20 champions after a thrilling final showdown

 Josh Watson played a key role with the bat in Weedons win over Sefton

against Southbrook at Rangiora’s Mainpower Oval. Led by skipper Harry Fitzpatrick, who made 39 off 56 balls, the Cheviot Magpies finished with 135/6 off their allotted 20 overs. Southbrook’s run chase got off to the worst start with star Canterbury Country opener Jack Boyle prised out by the pace of Harrison Cox in the opening over. However, when Country stalwart, Andrew Robinson, and former Blackcap, Shanan Stewart, were dismissed Southbrook’s run chase stuttered and they fell eight runs short. Fitzpatrick’s all-round play with bat and ball earned

him top MVP honours as Cheviot won their first silverware back in the topflight competition. Scoreboards: One Day competition: Sefton 143 (L Taylor 52, M Laffey 22, T Harrison 20; F Austin 3/30) lost to Weedons 145/8 (J Watson 33no, J Parker 29no; B Cross 2/19, T Waller 2/35); Darfield South-Malvern 105 beat Southbrook 85. Premier T20 final: Cheviot 135/6 (H Fitzpatrick 39, J Harris 24, B Rayner 18, J Hyde 16; T Bruce 2/33, S Stewart 1/17) beat Southbrook 127/6 (T Rodden 29, A Robinson 20, S Stewart 14; P Rayner 2/28, H Cox 1/12). 

Malvern A&P Show

Malvern A&P Association: A brief history

100

The Malvern Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show has its birth in the formation of a farmers’ club at Russell’s Flat in the late 1890s, organised by an early settler, John Traves. The club had started conducting social functions and eventually organised competitions of various descriptions as forms of entertainment and on May 4, 1899 the club held a foal and produce show in a paddock by the school at Russell’s Flat. The following year, another show was held in April where there were 228 entries, as well as the first ‘trade exhibit’ - a Massey Harris cultivator equipped with a grass seed or grain sowing box. By 1903, the show had grown in every way, so it was decided to move the event to Annat, which allowed the exhibitors and spectators the full benefit of the railway facility. Annat was also regarded as a more central location for the area. The show was held in the Annat school grounds in 1903 and 1904. The Malvern Agricultural and Pastoral Association was formed in 1905 and the show was shifted to the Sheffield Domain, where it has remained to this day. Mr F Bull was the first president of the association and Mr G F Wright, the secretary. Mr Wright was to hold the secretary’s position for six shows and was president in 1913.

IT’S NOT A TARGET

The Sheffield Domain afforded more space than the other locations, although there weren’t many facilities. There existed the frame of a building on the domain and this was covered with tarpaulins and used as a produce shed on show day. A more permanent produce shed was erected in 1911. When the new Fletcher shed was erected in 1980-81, the old produce shed was demolished. Another building was used as a pavilion for the sports clubs and as a show office until the first permanent pavilion was opened in 1924. A new pavilion was constructed and opened in July 1977. 

Leeston Fete ADVERTORIAL

… continued from front page

Passionate about heritage

Leeston Fete on again Now in its eighth year, the Leeston Fete is going to be bigger, brighter and better than previous years.

Originally from Te Kuiti in the King Country, Mr Bassett came down to Lincoln University when he was 18 to do a Diploma in Farm Management. In his first week in the South Island he met his future wife, Jenny, at a toga party. The pair now has three children, Sarah,18, Charlie, 18, and Jessica, 14. Mr Bassett said he had little exposure to A&P shows when he was younger but his wife Jenny had with the Mackenzie A&P Association’s Highland Show, where she had been a regular competitor from a very young age. “So while I had little connection to the shows when I was growing up, through Jenny I now have been exposed to them for over 20 years. “The heritage and community aspect of the A&P shows attracted me to them right from the start.” He is not in favour of reducing the emphasis on the rural aspects of the show to help attract visitors from the city. “We need to be proud of the pastoral and agricultural heritage of the show,” Mr Bassett said. He admitted he had been a little hesitant about taking on the role of show president.

“I was a bit daunted by it, but the way the committee has pulled together over the last month I am confident of a wellorganised show. “We now have more entries than ever before in the history of the show, particularly in the horse section, and a number of new competitions.” He said the thing he is looking forward to at the show, apart from ‘the barbecue afterwards’, is to see how these new competitions go as they have attracted a lot of the first time entries. They have been using social media as part of their marketing. “We set up a Facebook page and that has gone really well both in terms of attracting new entries and now promoting the event.” 

With 115 stalls now booked in and ready to go you will be spoilt for choice at this year’s event. This year, the committee are excited to launch a new area called the ‘Secret Garden’, which will be held in the Anglican Church grounds. This will be home to outdoor furniture, repurposed furniture, plants and gardening equipment. A lot of our stalls from previous years are returning and, with the Leeston Fete’s popularity growing, we have already received registrations from approximately 20 first time stalls. We will again have the popular, dedicated children’s area in Anderson Square, but here too you will notice a few improvements. The entertainment area has moved to the St David’s church grounds alongside the Saturday Market stalls. This is so that

people will be able to relax on the grass area under the shade of the trees. With the main street closed to traffic, there is the freedom to allow people to meander, admiring the variety of goods on display. The free entry and wide variety of food stalls means that the fete is a great family day out. The date for the fete has been brought forward, so the day no longer clashes with winter sports trials. So the date to mark on your calendars, is Saturday, March 24, from 10am to 3pm.

For all your accounting needs.

Halfway between Ireland and Britain, the Isle of Man has always done things differently. Home to what was once the world’s largest water wheel, the world’s oldest parliament, and famously a place without speed limits, the picturesque little island is also home to a race, which makes and breaks motorcycle racing royalty. The Isle of Man TT. This 60 kilometre loop of closed public roads flies over bridges, courses over hillsides and zips through picture postcard towns as it tests the mettle of riders and their machines. Many have crashed. Many, indeed, have died in pursuit of the trophy. However, bikes forged in this crucible become big names. Just having that ‘TT’ badge can tell you a lot about a machine and the company committed to jumping in to what has been called ‘motorcycling’s Nurburgring’. CFMoto may be a new name compared to Ducati or Honda on the hallowed circuit, but their factory racing team have competed five times, providing a memorable upset in 2016 as rider, Gary Johnson, nabbed 4th position in the Bennetts Lightweight TT class. One step off the podium means a lot of big players left in the dust of CFMoto’s lightweight 650cc bike, and that’s a good reason to create a

for the novice rider, and even boasts antilock brakes for safety. Then there’s the price. While other bikes in this category — and, we might add, ones which are not inspired directly by a Manx TT contender — top the $10k mark, the 650NK offers formidable value for money. It is, however, a limited edition, so book a test ride soon. Just like all the other competitors in the Isle of Man’s great race, they’ll be going fast. 

commemorative road-going edition. Which they have, in style. Powered by a willing twin cylinder water cooled four-stroke, this aggressively styled machine stacks up against the likes of Suzuki’s Gladius as a learner approved street bike with racing attitude. There’s no mistaking the intent of CFMoto’s designers, with all that carbon texture and bright neon yellow stitching on black leather. However at commuting speeds the 650NK is mild-mannered enough

Putting them in the shade  by Andy Bryenton

Mitsubishi have brought back a name from the past and given it a whole new lease of life as they resurrect the Eclipse badge — but not in the way you would expect. Their new Eclipse Cross is a departure from convention in another way, as the masters of the four-wheel-drive off-road racer — the mighty Evo series — step back onto the pavement with a true crossover compact SUV. Those who remember the old Eclipse — a car sold mainly in the US market, but popularised in video games thanks to its street tuner appeal at the time — will hardly recognise the Eclipse Cross, which does away with that rounded 1990s shape to embrace an aggressive, angular and forward-looking style. In a market full of small SUV crossovers, this somewhat radical treatment makes it stand out, and Mitsubishi designers have taken the same route as their fellow countrymen did with the Toyota CH-R — make it look wild and interesting, polarise opinion, but at least stand out from the pack. They’ve succeeded, with the same sporty, sharp-edged aesthetic sweeping from grille to tail lights. And don’t worry about that window-splitting rear bar — unlike on certain other vehicles it doesn’t destroy your ability to see where you’re reversing. And that’s not just because a reversing camera makes turning your head obsolete.

Safety features and smart technology abound on this new Mitsubishi, including a full suite of traffic safety assists to keep you in your lane and a safe distance from other road users, even in poor conditions. The addition of a touch pad with which to control the infotainment system is a nice touch — pun intended — meaning that you need not reach across the cabin to adjust items on the dash. But all this functionality and comfortable seating for a family of five is the gold standard for crossover SUVs in the compact bracket. Mitsubishi have focussed in on providing something some of those other manufacturers have missed out on, however — a smooth ride, assisted by a small but punchy motor. Here we’re talking 112kw and 254nm of torque — not the immense figures they once extracted from the 2 litre Evo mill. But it’s a bit of fuel-saving realism from the triple diamond brand, however,

as they acknowledge that the crossover SUV is really, for most, an evolution of the station wagon concept. By adding a 1.5 litre turbocharged MIVEC engine

Pay attention!

under the hood they’ve given the Eclipse Cross a bit of pep to make it engaging to drive, and that’s the factor, which backs up its bold styling. 
