A highly successful Canterbury Athletics Championships has seen a record number of Selwyn athletes being picked for representative honours. The Selwyn Athletics Club (SAC), based in Rolleston, has had 22 of its athletes named in Canterbury open and grade track and field teams following the recent champs in Timaru, at which the club secured third place in the Canterbury clubs competition. “Finishing third in the clubs championship was a real surprise but demonstrates how well all our athletes did as a team,” club captain Rachel Simons said. The rural bachelor competition is now in its seventh year and entries close at the end of March. Eight finalists will be selected for the popular competition, which takes place during Fieldays at Mystery Creek Events Centre in June. Finalists have their farming skills, attitude and all-round charisma put to the test during a series of rural-themed challenges, including fencing, cooking, wood splitting, dog handling, and health and safety. The winner walks away with a prize pack worth more than $20,000 along with the coveted Golden Gumboot trophy. NZ National Fieldays Society CEO Peter Nation said the rural bachelor competition was a chance for agricultural blokes to showcase their farming skills and love of the industry. “NZ Agricultural Fieldays is a premier international event that celebrates the best of our rural industry, and with Fieldays Rural Bachelor of the Year we are looking for someone genuine and hardworking, who personifies that passion and will be a great ambassador for both the competition and New

Kirwee Players will be introducing a large group of talented youngsters as part of its performance on The Little Mermaid next month, both on and off the stage.

The Springfield based president of the Summit Road Society is calling for help in restoring the damage caused by the recent firestorm on the Port Hills.

p The young cast of The Little Mermaid enjoy some time out from rehearsal

The Little Mermaid, based on the Disney musical fairy tale about Ariel, a mermaid who wishes to live as a human, will play the Kirwee Community Hall on April 8 and 9, with two shows each day. Kirwee Players publicity officer Courtney Hyde said the group believed there was a need to encourage younger people into the theatre. “After the success of Oliver last year, it showed there was a gap in Selwyn for a dedicated kid’s theatre group to allow the talent of the area to develop their stagecraft and have fun. “The hope for Kirwee Players is to continue with the formula for years to come and allow as many kids as possible to experience theatre to enrich their lives.” Auditions for The Little Mermaid were held in December last year “A fantastic number of kids came from all over

Selwyn and 31 children were eventually chosen to join the cast,” Ms Hyde said. The group has been rehearsing three times a week and is gearing up to hit the stage in early April. She said it wasn’t just on stage that they wanted to encourage younger people into the theatre. “Kirwee Players acknowledges that not only do they need talent from the youngsters on stage but also behind the scenes, and have taken this opportunity to work with a fresh new directing team.” The new team is made up of Kelsea Nelson-Cummins, Olivia Gibson and pianist Caelan Thomas. “They are being mentored by the Kirwee Players production team and this allows the society and the district to build its creative base and allow more people to get involved.” Tickets are available online at eventfinda.co.nz. ¢

Society president Bill Woods of Springfield said volunteers have still not been able to access Ohinetahi Reserve to assess the full extent of the damage. “However, behind the scenes, the society has been busy assessing the situation and preparing for the enormous programme of restoration ahead,” Mr Woods said. “The Society recognises that this event is well beyond their internal resources and are asking for help from the public.” He said there were two ways people can help, either financially or physically. “This is going to be a very p expensive project and a $10 per tree donation will be a great way for people to assist. “We have already ordered thousands of plants and we are looking for committed groups to take responsibility for a defined group of about 100 plants in a specific area.” He said a more immediate requirement is for people to help them collect this season’s seed from suitable Port Hills plants, and that they can prepare the seed ready for sowing this winter.

Research pops cork on lunar theory

Recycling children’s car seats

If your wine does not taste as good as it did yesterday don’t blame the moon.

Selwyn District Council is partnering with SeatSmart to offer a recycling programme for expired or damaged car seats.

That’s one of the findings of Lincoln University researcher Dr Wendy Parr and her colleagues who investigated the controversial notion that wines taste different on days determined by the lunar cycle and is enshrined in what is known as the biodynamic calendar. The calendar provides ‘days’ when the moon’s rhythms suggest that a wine will taste its best. “Anecdotal evidence suggests that some professionals in the wine industry, in particular wine producers and retail outlet and wine distribution company staff, appear to accept that the moon may exert some sort of influence over how a beverage tastes on a particular day, despite the lack of scientific evidence,” Dr Parr said. “For example, a wine may be perceived as tasting different across two successive tastings of the same wine, or ‘not showing well’ on a particular day.” Dr Parr and her team had 19 New Zealand wine professionals blind-taste 12 Pinot noir wines at times determined within the biodynamic calendar for wine drinkers as being favourable (fruit day) and unfavourable (root day) for wine

tasting. The tasters rated each wine four times, twice on a fruit day and twice on a root day, using 20 experimenter-provided descriptors. Dr Parr said the wines were perceived as different in a variety of ways, but the specific day on which they were tasted did not affect how they were rated. “The study does not investigate or debunk biodynamic agriculture, but merely tests the central tenet of the published wine drinkers’ calendar.” ¢

Selwyn parents can take their unwanted car seats to the Pines Resource Recovery Park in Burnham School Road, and until June the council is subsidising the processing cost. Council’s solid waste manager Andrew Boyd said council is pleased to be able to partner with SeatSmart to help reduce the amount of car seats going to landfill by recycling them. “To help make the programme a success we are asking residents to remove and dispose of the fabric seat covers prior to bringing them in,” Mr Boyd said. The seats are dismantled through Department of Corrections community work programmes, which provide opportunities for offenders to learn new skills and contribute to the community. The recovered plastic is recycled into products for the building industry, metal parts are taken to metal recyclers, and the harnesses will be used by Karkt NZ and The Green Collective who make handmade bags from recycled items. Selwyn School Road Safety Coordinator Stephanie Hautler said all car seats have an expiry date on them,

and through time seats can be damaged from UV light, heat, general wear and tear or in a crash. “SeatSmart can help reduce the amount of recyclable materials going to landfill and remove expired seats from circulation, which improves road safety,” Ms Hautler said. “The SeatSmart recycling programme is a great way for caregivers to dispose of unsafe car seats and know that the seat will be recycled, rather than being used after they have expired or have become unfit for use.” Ms Hautler said booster and convertible seats can be recycled through the recycling programme, along with capsules, but polystyrene seats are not part of the programme. Parents can find information about how to check their seat’s expiry date at seatsmart.co.nz and for information on the SeatSmart programme email roadsafety@selwyn.govt.nz. Nationally, more than 40,000 car seats expire every year in New Zealand. If these seats were placed together they would stretch from Darfield to West Melton or Leeston to Lincoln. ¢

Successful summer for Selwyn u by Kent Caddick

The Selwyn Athletics Club is celebrating its most successful summer yet with the club being named the third top club in Canterbury following its overall team performance at the recent Canterbury championships. The club is one of the fastest growing sporting bodies in the Selwyn district. It began in 2012 on the grounds of Rolleston School with less than 50 children but quickly outgrew the school grounds and moved to Brookside Park in 2013.

Over time it has become bigger and has a large herbaceous border and a perennial movement style planting at the bottom. “We have seals, [on the beaches below] two types of penguins, and lots of other rare animals. There is also approximately 100 hectares of regenerating native forest which Richard is particularly involved in. “It’s hard to set something against something as beautiful as the coastline here. That’s what all the native areas are about. “There is a shelter belt of old macrocarpa trees and they do a good job of sheltering us from the wind. If it weren’t for them we would have an entirely different garden.” Jill says most of the tourists they get are from overseas and the couple have featured in a number of garden magazines in Europe and the United States. The best part about it all for Jill is meeting people with a shared interest in gardening. “I find gardeners are lovely people and even those who aren’t particularly into gardening but just like a beautiful place are really interesting in other ways.

Planning and planting an orchard Establishing an orchard on your lifestyle block can involve a good deal of work, and sometimes money, so it’s worth doing some careful planning before taking spade to soil. If you get it right, it will reward you for decades with home-grown fruit and nuts. Planning It’s important to look at the conditions you have on your property before beginning planting, because it’s easier to work with the natural patterns of your land than against them. Study air flow, water flow, orientation to the sun, and where the prevailing winds and frost come from. A slope is a great thing to have in an orchard, because it allows cold air to run downhill, and provides frost-free spots at the upper end. Wet patches and very dry spots on your land are not necessarily a bad

thing: you just need to put the right plants in the right places. Hazelnuts, for example, like a good sharp winter chill, so a hollow that harbours frost is just the right place for them. Wet areas, particularly those rich in nutrients like the far end of your septic tank leach field, are great for plums. Citrus also like high nutrients but don’t like wet feet. Dry, windy areas are ideal for trees that are prone to fungal and bacterial rots, so these areas can house nectarines, peaches and walnuts. Planting and maintenance The layout of your orchard can be traditional rows, or something completely different. Rows can be fine, especially if you are only growing a limited range of fruit trees, but it can create large gaps between plants which may need a tractor for grass and weed control. Consider not using a tractor in the orchard to avoid soil compaction and reliance on fossil fuels. Instead consider a food forest where planting

p Apples are a reliable tree to have in any orchard. Plant a variety of apples that are good to cook with and ones that are great to eat straight from the tree

is very mixed, and is based on the best microclimate for the species involved. A minimum space of four to five metres between trees should be allowed, and large spreading trees like walnuts should be at least 25 metres apart. Thinking about the mature height of each tree is also important. Tall trees need to be positioned so they won’t shade other trees. To minimise grass and weed growth, use heavy mulching with organic material (a mixture of lawn clippings and dry leaves is good), applied during the wettest possible conditions to enhance soil moisture retention. The final word on the subject of grass and weeds is not to panic. Grasses only grow to a certain height and then fall over in autumn. As long as you clear around young trees and avoid fire hazards, they won’t do much damage to your orchard. Water conservation in the orchard is very

important, especially if you don’t have a stream or bore available and are relying on rainwater. It’s very helpful to have storage tanks located as close to the top of your slope as possible. You can also use the ancient technique of building swales, which are essentially small ditches like miniature terraces, which retain water on the slope. And mulch heavily with organic matter to minimise evaporation from the soil. Always investigate what cultivars grow well in your area before planting. For example, you may like Golden Queen peaches, but they may not do well on your property while another type of peach will thrive. Contact your local branch of the Tree Crops Association to get information on appropriate cultivars for your area, and detailed advice on care for each type of tree. ¢

Pets & Livestock ADVERTORIAL

Exercising body and brain by Yolande Howell BVSc(Hons)

Most of us know we need to exercise our pets, whether they are a dog, cat, rabbit, bird, guinea pig, rat or mouse. Exercise is great to keep their bodies healthy and fit. With dogs we take them for walks, runs and swims. Do be aware with young growing dogs however that it is not advisable to take them jogging or running along whilst you run or cycle. Excessive exercise is detrimental to growing bones and joints, and I would suggest you avoid it until your dog is fully grown. Small breeds are usually fully grown at 12 months of age and large breed dogs are usually fully grown at approximately 18 months. Ask your vet for guidance. Cats normally exercise themselves, indoor cats may need more exercise by means of a cat tree or running and jumping around home or their enclosure. Enrich these areas with fold-out tunnels and toys. Rabbits and birds should really be allowed time out of their hutch or cage to move freely. This leads to markedly better health, and reduces the risk of obesity and boredom. In addition to ‘wearing’ our pets out with physical exercise, most of them need their brains stimulated as well. Too many people say that their dog runs around for miles but still doesn’t wear out and destroys things in the garden for example. The same goes for cats, rabbits and birds; they can also develop destructive behaviour towards objects, people or themselves. Our pets are also intelligent animals and they need to exercise their brains as we do. Puzzle toys such as treat balls are a great way to exercise all animals, you can find them for dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and other small furries (guinea pigs, mice, rats, etc). Often they involve putting the animal’s food or treats in them and they have to work for each morsel. This keeps them thinking and occupied, and it takes up a large part of their day if they eat slowly. Be creative, you can even use a plastic bottle but make sure it is safe, there are lots of different ideas online. Rotate your pets’ toys, don’t just leave a pile of toys and expect your pet to just play with them by themselves, the novelty wears off pretty quickly. Have a selection of different toys and only offer two to three each day, and change them daily. If your bird is in a cage, change their perches, offer different perches with different

surfaces. Hang their toys and treats in different places regularly. Offer them different fruit and vegetables in different locations in the cage. Dogs of any breed also benefit from using their brains with obedience training, agility and flyball, etc. Ask your local dog training club

for ideas and classes, they are usually run by volunteers and are happy to help. The main thing to bear in mind is to play with your pet! Interact with them, none of them are designed to just sit there in the background whilst we are busy with our lives.

Auto & Marine

A leap forward in efficiency u by Andy Bryenton

When it comes to power and economy, there’s little question that electronic fuel injection beats traditional carburetted aspiration hands down. It may not have always been the case, but the modern computerised fuel delivery system is the key to better compression and more horsepower. The old style of carburettor went out of automobiles in the early 1980s, with the final examples being cars like the Triumph 2500 S and the first-edition Mazda RX7. It hung on in motorcycles until recently, and persists in even smaller engines such as those in lawnmowers. Or does it? It seems that times are changing in the world of ride-on zero turn mowers at least, with the coming of computer controlled electronic fuel injection to the Ferris mowers range. A good example of why this brand is being picked up enthusiastically by both lifestyle block owners and grounds maintenance professionals, the Ferris IS 3200 Z is more than just an engine upgrade. But once the comfortable seating position, responsive turning

circle and wide, durable cutting deck are taken in, it’s the big twin-cylinder 28-horsepower mill mounted behind the driver’s seat which inevitably draws the attention. Similar in size to many other V-twin motors in the Ferris garage, this unit boasts 25 per cent greater fuel efficiency and a super-smooth purr from the get-go. Ferris claims that piloting the IS 3200 Z across the turf is like taking a relaxing drive — with the coincidence that you also cut the lawn. That matters, because more fuel economy matched to a bigger fuel tank means more time in the field between breaks to fill up. Having made its new machine more efficient, Ferris has also gone out of its way to make it more comfortable, due to the inevitability of more hours ‘in the saddle’. Its

engineers have taken another cue for modern autos — adjustable rear coilover-shocks and front independent adjustable shocks combine with a cushioned seat to make the IS 3200 Z one of the smoothest in the business. Even maintenance is easier, with plug-in diagnostics like a top-end Euro sedan.

KIRWEE LAWNMOWER REPAIRS

As more and more people realise that the old push mower is not going to tackle the sward on their lifestyle block or rural property, the zero-turn mower is growing in popularity. This move to a new fuel delivery technology means a big leap ahead for Ferris — from 1980s tech to the 21st century in one go! ¢

Unwanted Cars, Trucks, Vans & 4 Wheel Drives.

Back in 1985, with the SUV industry in its infancy and the world in general only just switching on to the idea that large families could better fit in something outside the station wagon mould, Nissan took one of its light commercial platforms and created a bit of a sensation. The original Pathfinder was to go on to sell in huge numbers, over an entire decade, with an evolving line-up of engine options charting the rise of the modern turbo diesel. Pathfinders of this vintage were also built tough — you can still see many of them on the road today, or even in the back blocks or on the beaches as truly recreational SUVs. Fast forward to 2017, and Nissan is justifiably proud of a more polished, more grown-up new generation of the Pathfinder. The more refined seven-seater has lost the angular and brutal look of its forebears, in the same way a modern gentleman has lost the mug of his caveman ancestors. Now looking sleek and curved, in line with Nissan’s 21st-century design aesthetic — think GT — the Ti 4WD model Pathfinder boasts leather trim, tri-zone climate control, in-headrest monitors for computer games and movies, a panoramic moonroof and 13 powerful Bose speakers. Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s gone soft, though. This comfortable urban living room can be transported neatly to just about anywhere by the power under the hood and the engineering under that sculpted steel body. While a two-wheel-drive model is available for those who want to exclusively cruise the urban jungle, the four-wheel-drive iteration of this machine

stays true to its roots — and then some. With a big V6 under the hood developing 202 kilowatts and 340 Newton-metres of torque, this is no faux off-roader. While the Pathfinder in its modern guise may not be subjected to the hard knocks of those rural generation-1 models out there, it will certainly carry and tow even a very large family and their gear to outdoor holidays and adventures.
