Broadband upgrade for Kirwee by Kent Caddick
Kirwee broadband campaigner Chris Clayton can finally tell his six-year-old daughter Sophie, that ‘Daddy’s fixed the internet’. Young Sophie Clayton is among the Kirwee residents celebrating the news that lines company Chorus has agreed to upgrade its Kirwee exchange to enable locals to receive improved broadband coverage and speeds. Chris Clayton has been at the forefront of residents and local businesses pushing for the upgrade due to the failure of the current system to provide adequate broadband to the growing Selwyn township. Clayton who has been campaigning for the upgrade for around six months said he is excited at the news Chorus is to upgrade the Kirwee exchange. “It is a shame it has taken this long to get something done but I’m pretty excited the long hard slog has finally paid off,” Clayton said. “We will no longer have the slowdowns residents and businesses have faced most afternoons and evenings when internet usage is at its peak. “We have been lobbying council, central Government, the community board and internet service providers to get something done but the answer was always the same, ‘it’s not our equipment it is up to Chorus’.” Clayton said it wasn’t a one-man campaign to get the upgrade and a number of businesses along with many residents who lobbied for the upgrade through the Government’s broadband upgrade website can take credit for Chorus’s decision to upgrade the exchange. “I guess one of the reasons I got

involved was because my six-year-old daughter Sophie kept telling me ‘the internet sucks’ and now I can finally tell her Daddy’s fixed the internet.” Chorus hopes to have the Kirwee upgrade completed by June. Chorus Infrastructure general manager Ed Beattie said once the work is finished more reliable and consistent broadband speeds will provide faster upload speeds for photographs and images, faster download speeds for music and movies, and better, clearer video conversations with friends and family.
“Better broadband will also help rural businesses connect easily to the world and run applications from cloudbased services, reducing IT costs and improving business resilience. “In practical terms for rural businesses, such as farms, this will mean better connection to services like livestock improvement records and markets overseas, as well as improving time management through online purchasing. Technology plays a big part in modern farming and now residents in Kirwee will be able to be part of that. continued on page 4 …

Dyslexia Foundation of New Zealand is to benefit from the sales of a new book, Parenting by the Stars, which showcases parenting tips and insights from more than 60 New Zealand celebrities. The book was launched during Dyslexia Advocacy Week and all profits from its sales will go to DFNZ. Parenting By The Stars features advice from a wide range of wellknown New Zealanders, including Lady Pippa Blake, Sir Peter Leitch (the Mad Butcher), parenting experts Nigel Latta and Diane Levy, TV presenters Rawdon Christie, Toni Street, Pio Terei, Jacquie Brown, and sportspeople Michael Campbell, Barbara Kendall and Bernice Mene. Marketing executive Anne Marie Spicer said parenting is a wonderful role but there’s no doubt it has its challenges. “DFNZ was chosen as the recipient charity because it work has far reaching impact for families and the community. “We hope funds raised will help the Foundation continue its important work helping New Zealand children with different learning preferences get an equal start in life, which in turn supports schools, families and society in general. DFNZ trustees chairperson Guy PopeMayell said they were thrilled to have the opportunity to benefit from such an exciting project.
“Interestingly several of the contributors are also dyslexic, which speaks to the fact that it is widespread in New Zealand. “Conservative estimates are that one in ten Kiwis are dyslexic. While this is often seen as just a problem with reading and writing, it can affect a spectrum of skills including motor skills, cognitive processing speeds and comprehension, auditory and visual perception, planning and organising, and short-term memory and concentration,” Mr Pope-Mayell said.

Organisers of the Arts Heart Art Exhibition are calling this year’s event in Rolleston a success with both the number of artists and sales up on last year.
Gray Leonard’s painting entitled ‘Liebig Range-Mt Cook area’ took out the People’s Choice Award at the Arts Heart Art Exhibition Hororata Community Trust chairman Richard Lang said the new website will make it easier for the community to connect
The website, www.hororata.org.nz, has been 10 months in the making and will provide information on events, community groups, local businesses, activities and accommodation. “There is so much happening in this rural community with so many great initiatives and being able to bring everything together onto one central website makes it easier for people to connect with our community,” Trust chairman Richard Lang said. “This website is designed to provide a platform for community groups, who don’t have their own site, to be able to gain a web presence. Equally important the site works alongside the organisations that do have their own to increase their web exposure.” Mr Lang said while the website is titled ‘Hororata’ it encompasses a large geographical area which also

includes Coalgate, Glentunnel, Glenroy, Windwhistle and Lake Coleridge and he is encouraging community groups, businesses and events in those areas to also list their details on the site. “The area’s profile has increased recently with events like the Hororata Highland Games attracting attention nationwide and there have been a lot of newcomers to the district in the past few years. “This website will further develop the profile of the area and other projects such as a historic trail that is already in the planning process.” He said the website is an evolving project to ensure it remains current and responds to the needs to the community. “Funding for the website has come from Pub Charity and web developers Maker have been a great project partner.”

Broadband upgrade for Kirwee “By upgrading the infrastructure in Kirwee, it not only means broadband will be more consistent and reliable, in some cases it will also mean that people who have previously been on a waiting list for a broadband service can access one.” Mr Beattie said that once the broadband infrastructure has been upgraded, Kirwee residents also have an important part to play in making the most of the upgraded broadband capability.
“A customer’s broadband service is also affected by factors including their broadband internet connection plan, modem, computer, the wiring in their home or business and distance from the cabinet. “We also encourage residents to talk directly with their internet service provider to find out how they can be connected to our upgraded network once the work is complete.”

Earth Hour comes to Selwyn by Kent Caddick
A number of events will be held across Selwyn to celebrate Earth Hour which helps to raise awareness of climate change.
A successful season for the Malvern Tennis Association was capped off recently with stalwart Jack Prouting receiving a life membership.

Jack Prouting, right, receives his Malvern Tennis Association life membership badge from the association’s only other life member Alec Swanson
The association celebrated the 2014– 15 season with its awards evening last week during which Prouting received his life membership badge, while the Kirwee Black, Kirwee Gold and West Melton White teams were presented with their winning trophies. Prouting, a member of the West Melton Tennis Club for around 50 years, has had a long and distinguished career both as a player and an administrator with the Malvern association. He has been association president since 1999, and it was noted at the awards that he has always made himself available for any duties that come with the position. As a player he has been the number one ranked senior men’s player in Malvern for a number of years and has represented Canterbury Country for some time. He is also a member of the senior interclub ‘100 Club’ at Wilding Park having achieved in excess of 100 wins at a senior level.
He is a multiple title winner in New Zealand seniors and masters tennis and in 2013 became president of Canterbury Country Tennis. Prouting received his life membership badge from the association’s only other life member Alec Swanson, the Sheffield sporting stalwart who now lives in Darfield. Swanson is also patron of the Malvern Tennis Association. Meanwhile, the Kirwee Tennis Club trophy cabinet will be bulging after its teams swept the A Grade championship. Kirwee Black under the guidance of captain Dave Ashton took out the grade’s round robin section but was beaten in a close fought final of the knockout competition by Kirwee Gold, with Dave Topham receiving the trophy on behalf of the team. In the Presidents Grade it was the West Melton White team which swept all before it, winning both the round robin and knockout titles.
This year Earth Hour will be held on Saturday, March 28 between 8.30pm to 9.30pm. Lincoln Envirotown is helping to organise a number of events across Selwyn to mark the occasion. “It is fantastic to see so many social and community occasions being organised for the night,” Lincoln Envirotown spokesperson Dave Fitzjohn said. Darfield Hotel’s Back Country Kitchen Restaurant is holding a candle-lit dinner on the night. “On this night people all over the world will be switching off their electricity and most of the world’s well known buildings and monuments will be plunged into darkness,” Mr Fitzjohn said. “This dinner will be a wonderfully atmospheric way to enjoy and celebrate the evening with friends, family and others.” Lincoln Envirotown will hold its annual Earth Hour Barn Dance from 7.30pm to 11.30pm. “This is another candle lit occasion for people of all ages and while there is a small charge for adults but accompanied children are free, making for an old fashioned community dance for the whole family to enjoy. “Those attending are asked to bring their own drinks and
a plate to share, with a huge indoor picnic to be enjoyed later in the evening.” Canterbury Astronomical Society will open the doors to the R.F. Joyce Memorial Observatory in Bell’s Road near West Melton on the night and for a gold coin donation visitors are invited to view the stars as the lights go out around the district. Also the Little River Camp Ground is holding a ‘camping without electric power’ night.

Be prepared or prepare to fail
FITNESS
by Karen Hulston, physical trainer
Being skilful is important to sport but unfortunately skills will only get you so far, but being both skilful and fit it will ensure you are the star of your team this season. The difference between average players and outstanding players is often their fitness levels. When I train sports teams or athletes I believe in the principle of ‘train hard and play easy’. You see if you have done the correct pre-season training it enables you to play at your full potential while adding enjoyment to the game. Top sport teams often start preseason training in January. This is so fitness levels are peaking prior to their first game. During game season without the concern of fitness, it allows more time for skills training. With a lack of fitness you will not only fatigue quicker but you will be more susceptible to injury. Fatigue also diminishes performance, minimising your enjoyment for the game. Each sport code utilizes different components of fitness. For example for contact sports like rugby or league, all players need a good endurance and strength base. Backs need to concentrate more on power, speed and
agility, whereas forwards may need to spend more time building strength. Similar components of fitness are required for both hockey and soccer, as the positions and format of both games are alike. Having a good endurance base is pertinent as players are on large fields and a full game can be over an hour’s duration. Strikers and forwards need plenty of coordination, speed and power. Netball and basketball players need speed and agility as they are changing directions very quickly in confined spaces. They also need endurance to last the full game as well as coordination and power for jumping and throwing the ball fast and accurately. Whatever your choice of sport is this season, focus on the most relevant components of fitness. Endurance is a popular component of fitness for most sports, to improve endurance you need to start running. Think about the intensity of the sport you play. For example if you run a lot
Even horse riders can benefit from pre-season training
with minimal rest periods then when you train you should try and run continuously without stopping. If in your sport you are required to run short bursts, then practice running power poles or shuttles with rest periods. Train on a similar surface to your sport, for example if you play on a grass field you should train on the grass. Even horse riders and motorbike riders need to improve their fitness. Two years ago after having my fourth child I entered a low level competition on my young horse. I had minimal cardio fitness and my abdominal strength was weak. As a result I struggled to control

my horse during the cross country phase. My horse kept pulling me out of the saddle from the bit through to the reins. I was fatigued and unbalanced which put me in a vulnerable position. This year heading into the season I am more prepared and therefore confident I will have the fitness and core strength to control my horse. Remember to keep your fitness training specific to your sport and if your sport is starting up shortly then a little bit of training is better than no training. If you get started now, I guarantee you will not only find it easier but you will enjoy your sport so much more.

Like many before him this year’s Malvern Agricultural and Pastoral Association President Keith Taege is following in family footsteps. However, he began his involvement with the Malvern A&P Show earlier than his contribution at an association level started. “I was involved during the early years as a young Cub selling catalogues, then as a Scout on the gate,” Keith says. “I became involved at an association level 18 years ago, following in the footsteps of my father Cliff who was president in 1974.” Initially he was involved on the working bees setting up and dismantling the show site before becoming a member of the organising committee in 1999. “I took on the role in poultry then, helping set up the display sites, after which I took on the catering role, providing morning and afternoon teas for the judges and stewards.” In the last couple of years his workload on the committee increased, working his way up from junior vice president to taking on the role of president. He has fond memories of past Malvern A&P shows. “In years gone by I remember climbing on the threshing mill, which had a huge long elevator, riding on this elevator to the top and dropping into the straw below. “I also remember as a kid loving the side shows, along with the carnival food of candy floss, popcorn and hotdogs but never having enough money. “In recent years there have been some interesting mishaps where we had enormous winds and had to drop all the tents in a hurry before they blew away.” Keith says a lot of work goes into producing a successful show.

Malvern A&P Show 2015 Show to recognise community volunteers by Kent Caddick
‘Celebrating volunteers in our community’ is the theme of this year’s Malvern A&P Show at the Sheffield Domain on Saturday, March 28. Malvern A&P Association president Keith Taege says the theme was developed as a way to say thank you to the people involved in the many volunteer-based organisations throughout the Malvern region. A special marquee will be set up for voluntary organisations to display what they do. “It is well known that a country community couldn’t survive without volunteers. So the show has a twofold effect of showcasing all sorts of volunteer groups by letting the general public know what the organisations are about, and if possible how they might become involved,” Keith says. “I look at the Sheffield community and then the greater area of Malvern and see so many organisations and amazing people involved in these voluntary groups.” This year’s show will also help to raise money for the new premises for the Malvern St John in Darfield. Meanwhile, the entertainment section of the Malvern A&P Association, has once again come up with plenty to keep both old and young amused, with evergreen favourites and some new events. “A new event this year will be the Sheffield Challenge where teams of four compete across four events: stacking hay, picking potatoes, moving a bale of wool and shovelling grain. Prize money is on offer for the first four placed teams,” Keith says. “Another new event is stock judging for under and over 30 years, testing
crowd favourites such as the Pie and Pint competition and lawn mower racing will also be back. The show will once again culminate with the Grand Parade. However, this year a special event is being planned for after the parade which will pay tribute to a number of the volunteer organisations involved in the community including volunteer firefighters and St John Ambulance volunteers. To find out more you will have to be at the show.

THE RECORD
Malvern A&P Show 2015 The growth of a country celebration The Malvern Agricultural and Pastoral Association was officially formed in 1905 and held its first A&P Show in Sheffield. However, prior to that date a number of similar shows were held around the district showcasing agricultural produce and holding competitions setting the pattern for what was to come. Toward the end of the 19th century, when the dividing of large areas of land into smaller farms was completed, and families became established in each area, it became a custom to form social centres and clubs wherever possible. Russell’s Flat had a Farmers’ Club which was organised by an early settler, John Traves. The club had started conducting social functions and eventually organised competitions of various descriptions as forms of entertainment when Mr Traves suggested a Foal Show be held. As a result, on May 4, 1899, a Foal and Produce Show was held in a paddock by the school at Russell’s Flat. In April, 1900 another show was held

this time with 228 entries along with the first trade exhibit — a Massey Harris cultivator equipped with a grass-seed or grain sowing box. The shows of 1901 and 1902 were held in a paddock close to the school section but by this time the show had grown in every way, so a move was made which took the event to Annat. An important reason for this move was to overcome transport difficulties — Russell’s Flat being about three miles from the railway. The move allowed the exhibitors and spectators the full benefit of the railway facility. Annat was also regarded as a more central location for the area. The Show was held in the Annat school grounds in 1903 and 1904. Then in 1905 the Malvern Agricultural and Pastoral Association was formed and the show was shifted to the Sheffield Domain, where it has remained to this day. Mr. F. Bull was the first president of the association and Mr. G. F. Wright, the secretary. The Sheffield Domain afforded more space than the

other locations, although there were not many facilities. There existed the frame of a building on the domain and this was covered with tarpaulins and used as a produce shed on Show Day. A more permanent produce shed was erected in 1911 and another building was used as a pavilion for the sports’ clubs and as a show office until the first permanent pavilion was opened in 1924. The A&P Association was able to hold Shows during the 1914–18 World War. The catalogues show that entries were smaller than in peacetime, but homecraft, garden vegetables and forage crops were well supported. During the period between the two wars, the shows progressed, although the depression of the early 1930s saw the cancellation of the 1931 and 1932 shows. Gradual improvement and increasing entries continued until 1940, however,

this would be the last show held until 1946. As post-war conditions improved, rationing was discontinued and road transport came within the reach of all, the show expanded into its current format. Entries grew and covered many more sections, with horse and pony entries growing beyond expectations while the numbers of entries into stud sheep, cattle and farm produce such as grain and seed reached significant numbers. However the domestic classes saw a decline and the number of entries of home industries dropped off until recently when interest has regrown. Over the years the young people of the Malvern area have participated by exhibiting in the school classes and other sections of the show and are a focus of a day which celebrates much of what is good about rural life in this country.

The dangers of using a chainsaw
•
by Dr Clive Dalton
The chainsaw is one the most dangerous tools a lifestyle block owner can use and its potential for damage to life and limb is often underestimated. Keep reminding yourself that the chain on a modern saw, with its murderous teeth, travels at just over 100km/h, so you don’t have a hope of stopping it or lifting it out of the way before it has made a nice wide cut into your flesh and bone. At this speed the chain can cut through a human limb in about a third of a second. Here are some basic tips to survive as a chainsaw owner: • Don’t procrastinate and buy all the basic safety gear — leg protection, head, face and ear protection, footwear with steel toecaps, and thick leather gloves. • One of the above items is not enough — you need them all. If you can’t afford them, then you can’t afford a chainsaw. • Leg protection is not armour. The fibres in the material block up the chain and stops it, to give you a split second to take your finger off the button. You may still get an injury but it will be very much less than without protection. • Get a leather hand guard fitted to the handle on the saw. This is valuable if the chain breaks and whips back. Many chainsaws now have a device fitted to prevent this. • Keep checking that the chain brake is working. • When chainsawing, always try to work with a buddy or have someone within calling distance, especially when felling trees. • A team with chainsaws should not work closer than 3m apart when cutting up branches on a tree. • If you want to attract the attention of someone using a saw, don’t go up and pat them on the back.

Attract their attention from afar or touch them with a long stick. Accidents happen when startled operators turn round to face you with the saw still running — right in your direction. Before starting to cut wood, clear yourself a safe foothold and get well set. Do the cutting with the part of the bar nearest the engine and always ram the spikes into the wood for safety. Avoid using the tip of the bar as this can bounce and ‘kick back’ coming up in a nice arc to cut your head and upper body. Flying rotating saws have also cut off legs before they stopped. Know where the cut off log or tree branch is most likely to fall, and be aware of where it could bounce when it hits the ground -and who is in the way. Do not use a chainsaw above your head. This is a regular practice where people are hit by the falling saw, which has bucked out of their hands, or the branch they have just cut off. Don’t use a chainsaw up a ladder, which is generally far too unstable if you run into trouble. A cut -off branch can so easily knock you off the ladder with a revving saw in your hands. For serious tree felling, get professional help as these people will have had proper training and will be insured for any damage. Check that they have before hiring them! certainly have to pay for any damage or disruption. No matter how much the kids want to see the action, keep them well out of the way and confined in a safe area. Chainsaws also attract nosey neighbours — so keep an eye open for them appearing out of the blue, and warn them to keep back. Helpers can be a menace. They want to help you hold wood — with their hands and boots. Make sure wood is held firmly without the need for human help. An assistant should use a long piece of wood to hold wood and not their hands or feet. Power lines are a very serious issue, as you will have to pay for any damage and power outage if any tree you fell or branches you trim hit the lines. It’s here where estimating height is critical, as so often those on the ground advise that things ‘look’ alright, and they are far from it. The correct procedure is to contact the power company for advice, and if power needs to be cut off till the job is done, you will have to pay and
it can be expensive. But compare this cost with a fine for negligence and possible killing yourself and helpers into the bargain. • Damage to fences also needs to be considered. It’s a frustrating job taking down fences, but at least a fence that has been dismantled in an organised way can be put up again easier than one flattened and broken by a fallen tree. • Know some basic first aid training, especially how to stop profuse bleeding, and have a first aid box with you at all times when sawing. • Carry a mobile phone with you when sawing.

AROUND THE HOME
A guide to staying safe in rural homes With the population growth in Selwyn it is both urban and rural areas of the district which are welcoming new residents. Unfortunately thieves are also aware of this growth and are targeting those new areas, some of which are seeing previously rural residents now living in an urban environment and previously urban families living in an area with rural services, and that also means policing. Police can and will respond to rural crime, but keep in mind they may need to travel long distances to get to you. Preventing crime in rural areas and minimising its impact will be most effective when crime prevention is a partnership between rural people, Police, local authorities and local organisations. Report all instances of crime, even when a police response is not necessary. Police need to know the pattern of crime in an area. Report all instances of suspicious behaviour. It helps Police to know who is in the community or if there is a pattern of crime developing in an area that needs further investigation or that the rest of the community should be alerted to. Tag animals and keep accurate stock and produce records. hospitalised for further treatment and monitoring. Prevention is definitely better than cure. Chocolate toxicity is more often found in dogs than cats mainly because cats are not usually attracted to chocolate. Dogs on the other hand are more adventurous when it comes to food. They also have a great sense of smell so keep your dog away during Easter egg hunts. Dogs will often take chocolates or other treats such as baking left on kitchen benches or coffee tables so remember to put them away or out of reach.

chocolate toxicity. Signs of chocolate poisoning can include hyperactivity, increased heart rate, vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, panting, anxiety, seizures and potentially death. Diagnosis is normally based on evidence that the pet had eaten chocolate. Most people find chocolate wrappers or missing chocolate muffins from the baking tray, or other evidence such as a chocolate smell on your pet’s breath. If you know or suspect that your pet has eaten chocolate, call your vet straight away. In most cases immediate treatment is required. Depending on the severity of your pet’s symptoms your vet may induce vomiting to reduce the amount of chocolate in the stomach. Cats and dogs may also have to be

Chocolate contains two ingredients that can be toxic to dogs and cats, these are caffeine and theobromine. The amount of caffeine and theobromine varies with the type of chocolate, generally speaking the darker and more bitter the chocolate, the more caffeine and theobromine it contains. Therefore dark chocolate and baking chocolate are more toxic than white chocolate. Another aspect of chocolate that may be dangerous to your pet is that some varieties of chocolate contain other ingredients such as nuts and raisins in them. Macadamia nuts and raisins are also known toxins in animals and best avoided. Cacao bean mulch used in gardens also contains theobromine and if eaten in large quantities it can also cause

The benefits of the overlooked beetroot by Meryn Wakelin
Highly nutritious beetroot is well worth growing but is a power food still rather overlooked in New Zealand cuisine. Pickled beetroot from a can (or if you’re lucky home preserved) is a quick and easy side dish for a lazy summer meal or a classic Kiwi burger. But there are so many more ways we can enjoy this easily grown root vegetable. Here are some of the reasons why beetroot should be more frequently served at the table — whether raw, roasted, steamed, pickled or juiced. Raw energy One serving (one cup) of raw or cooked beetroot contains approximately 250 kilojoules. Research has shown it can boost your energy, fight cancer, lower blood pressure, enhance immunity and reduce pain. A very recent piece of research indicated that a 70ml serving of beetroot juice can lower blood pressure by 2%. However it sits quite high on the glycaemic index (i.e. these sugars are absorbed quickly) so if you have any trouble metabolising sugars be sure to eat small portions of the whole root rather than just the juice. Combine it in a meal with green leafy veges (grated raw in a salad) and a serving of high quality protein, to lower the glycaemic load. Nutrient rich Any vegetable with such a deep, rich red colour has got to be loaded with nutrients, and of course beetroot is.
