The group will mark its founding with its initial AGM on Tuesday, March 25 at its home base in the Rolleston Community House in Shelley Street. The group was formed by a number of Selwyn families with the support of IDEA Services to provide young people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to mix with fellow members and learn valuable life skills.
President Sandra Gilmour, who was one of the founders of the group, said they had come a long way in the last 12 months. “Initially we had six members but that has increased to eight, with members coming from Sheffield, Coalgate, Darfield, West Melton and Rolleston, some living in quite isolated areas where this type of contact is not available.
“When we began the IDEA Services one day programme in July we were running it between 10am to 2pm at the community centre. We have now increased the hours from 9am to 3pm. “It is possible we may look at running the programme two days a week and IDEA says it would support us with additional staff.”

Bake your way into your neighbour’s good books is the theme of this year’s Neighbours Day Aotearoa in Selwyn this month. The annual Neighbours Day event is being held on the weekend of March 29 and 30. Selwyn District Council’s Neighbourhood Support and Community Response coordinator Sue Jenkins said the focus of the weekend is on communities getting to know each other. “Neighbours Day is a fantastic opportunity to meet new people that you live alongside and help create safer and fun neighbourhoods. “Getting to know your neighbours can also help you in any type of emergency.” This year Selwyn residents are being encouraged to share baking as a way to get to know their neighbours. ‘Neighbouring is a Piece of Cake’ cards are being sent to Selwyn residents as part of an initiative between The Neighbourhood Project Te Raranga, and the district council.
“The idea of the cards is that you can bake a cake and then share a piece with your neighbours and other people on your street or living nearby,” Mrs Jenkins said. “You can take the cards with you as you deliver the cake and ask your neighbours to give you their contact details. “It’s a great way to both collect your neighbours contact information in case you need their help in the future and also to get to know who’s living in your area and make some new friends.” Darfield Library is hosting a range of activities on Saturday, March 29 to support Neighbours Day. The library will be open from 9.30am– 12.30pm and people are invited to come along and share morning tea with welcome packs available for new

The recent wet weather has had one positive spin off with fire restrictions being eased across all of Selwyn with the exception of the hill and high country areas. In an open fire season outdoor fires can be lit without a fire permit. Selwyn’s principal rural fire officer Wilson Brown said the significant amount of rain which fell at the weekend has reduced the fire risk across the district. Previously an open fire season was in place in the Ellesmere, Springs
and Malvern wards, and a restricted fire season was operating in Selwyn Central Ward. “There is no longer a high fire risk in Selwyn Central ward so we have introduced an open fire season in Selwyn. “However, people need to continue to be make sure if they light

A draft development plan to preserve and enhance McHughs Plantation near Darfield has been completed. The draft plan follows on from public meetings last year and McHughs Plantation Working Party chair, Sam Broughton, hopes it will be released to the public for consultation by the end of the month. “We aim to have a consultation period through autumn, plan through winter and then start work in the spring,” Cr Broughton said. In the meantime work will proceed around the outside of the plantation, including fencing, regrassing and signage. “People liked what they had, but it needed to be more accessible. People don’t want it to be over manicured.” The 43 hectare plantation was bought by Selwyn District Council in p Cr Sam Broughton says following consultation and planning, work will begin at McHughs Plantation in the spring 2013 for $1.6 million. visiting the Police and taking part in a cooking demonstration. Mrs Gilmour said one of the things they are looking to offer members in the future is the opportunity of work experience. “Many of our members are very capable young people and would thrive on the challenge of a job. Paul Wright of Sheffield has big boots to fill as he steps up to the role of president of the Malvern A&P Show to be held this Saturday. He is the fifth generation of Wright men to take on the role of show president, a family tradition of which he is honoured to fulfil. “I’m quite proud of it. It’s quite special. 1913. Another family tradition passed down the generations is to refer to each other by initials. G.F.’s son L.T. Wright was president from 1931–1934. Paul’s grandfather G.E. Wright was president in 1959. In 1992 Paul’s father D.L. Wright was president. Paul got involved with the show as a young lad, helping with the grain and seed. He officially joined the committee in his late 20s. The Wright’s have been running their family farm ‘Mountain View’ for five generations also. The property has grown and developed considerably in that time with acquisitions of other neighbouring properties boosting the size of land to 700 hectares. Three families live on the farm, with Paul’s brother Stephen and his family living in the original homestead, and Paul’s father and mother living in a new home on the farm. The farm is predominantly mixed cropping combined with cattle grazing. Four years ago irrigation units were put in which has opened up a lot more possibilities for how the farm can be run.

“Farming nowadays is a lot more intensive. Every decision we make we’ve got to think, how does it fit in with the rest of the farm? Once we got water (from irrigation) we had a lot more options,” Paul says. Along with the traditional wheat, barley and rye grass crops the Wrights now grow vegetable seeds which go predominantly to Asian countries. Examples of these are hybrid radish, cabbage and carrot seeds. Paul values the farming lifestyle he enjoys with his wife Nancy, their two boys James (9) and Alex (7). “I grew up on a farm and I was very lucky. It was great. Dad built us a go-cart, and we cut up the horse paddock with it. Now my kids are doing the same.” Paul says if his or his brother’s kids want to carry on the Wright farming tradition then it is there for them, but he’s not going to pressure them into it. “They’re very keen on it at the moment. They’re very aware of what’s going on at the farm and always asking questions. At the end of the day it’s totally up to them. We’ve got to be allowed to follow our own interest.” ¢

The theme of this year’s Malvern A&P Show is ‘Let us entertain you’ and one who’ll be delighting the crowd is 2012 New Zealand’s Got Talent grand finalist and local lad Dudley Fairbrass. Dudley hails from the town of Waddington, just down the road from the show grounds in Sheffield and has attended the show many times. “I like that the show’s a good opportunity for all the locals to get together, especially now that I’m out of school, as it’s events like the Malvern Show where you can bump into people you haven’t seen in a long while,” Dudley says, A keen guitarist Dudley only started singing when he was around 15-yearsold. Four years later he was on national television sharing his talents with much of New Zealand who eagerly voted him into p New Zealand’s Got Talent 2012 finalist Dudley Fairbrass from Waddington is one of the entertainers to feature on the the finals. outdoor stage at the show’s entertainment hub “New Zealand’s Got Talent was a good experience. I learnt as a hobby rather than a career at a lot. Not just about playing large this point. “I really enjoy playing local gigs and crowds, but also about how the TV business works,” Dudley says. taking up a course to learn a little more about music. I’m a little busy at the moment.” Entertainment hub The show committee is gearing up to entertain visitors by making a few changes to how things are usually run, according to the show president Paul Wright. The show will feature a newly designed entertainment hub. This will have a centralised marque, with a stage and food stalls. “It’ll be like a village green,” Paul Wright explains. The entertainment hub will feature speed shearing, a pie eating contest, and performances from local groups

and individuals such as the Sheffield Ballet School, DJ Singstar and Peter Henderson’s band. The committee have organised to have their bar licence extended to 7.30pm so that the good times can keep rolling after the exhibits and classes have finished. Other events include lawn mower racing, which is in its third year and draws a good crowd, wood chopping, and a new class of pre-1980s vintage cars and pickup trucks. ¢

power on Power outages following this month’s gale-force wind storm were primarily due to trees and branches with overhead lines and poles. As trees on private land are the responsibility of the land owner, we need your help to reduce the impact of future storms on our electricity network and on you and your neighbours.
How can you help? If you have a tree that could impact power lines, please think about your local community’s health and wellbeing. A power outage caused by a tree may not just affect you – it may impact many people, including those with health issues. Consider replacing tall trees near power lines with a lower growing species. If tree removal isn’t possible, as a minimum, make sure branches are kept well away from overhead lines and poles.

If you’re like many small business owners, you probably think branding is your logo, business name, slogan or tagline. If this sounds like you, you’re looking at branding all wrong. Logos, slogans and taglines, while important marketing tools, form only a small part of branding. So where does branding end and marketing begin? And why, as a small business owner, should you care? Marketing is all the activities and tools you use to promote your business and sell what you do to your customers. Branding is the underlying culture of your business, product or service. It is the promise of an experience that tells your customers who you are, why you exist and sets you apart from your competitors. That is why it is important to put effort into your branding as it helps people remember your business instead of your competitors. To get your branding off to the right start, here are the things you need to do first: Establish your purpose This is about clarifying why you exist — getting to the very core of your
business by understanding why you do what you do and the people (ideal customers) you most want to help. Establish your brand essence and personality This is about deciding what you are and how you want your brand to be perceived by your ideal customers. When running a lifestyle block having livestock can be both a benefit and a liability. Of benefit is the fresh and economic supply of consumables such as eggs, milk and meat which makes the idea of owning stock very attractive. From this produce a variety of home staples can be made, such as cheese and yoghurt. Animals can also provide natural fibres, such as wool, alpaca fleece and mohair from goats which can be used in clothing and home furnishings. Perhaps less obvious a benefit is the manure the animals produce. Different animals produce manure with different qualities. Cow manure is not high in nutrients, but it is well balanced and thus a good all-purpose manure. Low in nitrogen it doesn’t tend to burn the roots of young plants, and is great for improving the overall condition of soil. Horse manure similarly is not high in nutrients, but is a good all-rounder. Chicken manure on the other hand is high in nitrogen, as

well as phosphorous so must be used carefully around plants but is wonderful for leafy green plants. LIFESTYLE Animals still need looking after even in the snow and rain, so buy some wet weather gear and be prepared to brave the elements. One cannot emphasis enough the benefits of good fencing for stock management and neighbourly relations. Keep your stock where they’re meant to be. You will also need to think of stock handling facilities for times when your animals need treatments, shearing and loading on a trailer. An area which has good shelter and housing also needs to be considered, as well as feed storage areas. Stock attracts vermin, so how will you take care of these? Animals don’t live forever so from time to time you will need to deal with sickness and death. You will need to build some knowledge about animal health and be prepared to call in the vet if required. When deaths occur you need a plan for the disposal of the animal. Just like the birds and the bees animals do procreate. A little knowledge can go a long way to ensure your animals breed only if you want them to and that you are prepared for the birth of offspring. If you are well prepared and ready to put the work in then having stock can add a lot to your lifestyle property. A little planning goes a long way. ¢

Springston Hotel owners Jo and Neville Chapman looked pretty happy with the results of the 2014 annual potato growing competition and well they should be with over 80 people entering. Contestants from all over the area competed for the honour of having a trophy with their name on it displayed in the pub for the year.

Each contestant paid ten dollars for a seed spud and a bag, and had four months to grow the biggest crop of potatoes they could in the bag. Last Sunday afternoon about 100 locals old and small packed the car park and crowded around a large trailer whilst the entrants of this season’s potato competition were judged. The winner was a bloke called ‘Curly’ (I tried to find his real name, but after 3 phone calls no one could tell me, he is simply known as Curly). Curly grew 43 spuds. Runner up was potato queen Helen Dawes, the supplier of the seed potatoes. Her husband, spud guru Clive was well down the list with only a couple of dozen for his efforts. The largest potato was grown by Warren Norton, and what a whopper it was. He said he couldn’t donate it to the pot as he wanted to go home and show it to his wife. Local stalwart, Ange Grigg, says the annual competition is very popular.

“All the locals really get into it. Families wager bets on it and neighbours get up to all sorts of high jinks. We bought our spuds over on the trailer because they were so big. It’s a classic event pulled together by a wee pub in the country.” This was the funniest event I have been to in a long, long time. I spent nearly
two hours watching the community come together, around a trailer in the middle of the country, talking about potatoes and sharing tips and tricks to their success. It was gold, pure gardening gold. Events like this glue communities together. Well done Jo and Nev. I will be entering next year. ¢
