Heroes are local officers u by Mike Isle
The two police officers who arrested the alleged killer of 50 people at two Christchurch mosques on Friday are both believed to be stationed in Selwyn. The Record has chosen not to identify them or exactly where they are located. Nor will we give further publicity to the alleged perpetrator by naming him. The officers’ commanding officer said he was “incredibly proud” of the actions of the two, whom he described as highly experienced and “just doing their job”. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has already indicated that the two officers and other first-responders would be honoured and recognised for their roles during the horrific attack. What form that would take or whether it would involve a public or private ceremony is not yet known. The arrest was filmed by a motorist driving past the scene in Brougham Road in Sydenham about 3pm last Friday afternoon. The video shows the two officers, both in uniform, dragging a man from a car and one restraining him while the other covered him with a firearm. It has since been revealed that both officers were armed after travelling from their Selwyn bases to attend a course at Princess Margaret Hospital on how to deal with armed offenders. After the course, the officers elected to stay in Christchurch and help search for the killer. The Record understands that the officers predicted the possible route the offender would take after he killed seven people at the Linwood Mosque, and moments later spotted a suspicious car being driven erratically along Brougham Road. After confirming that the registration number was of the car they were looking for, the officers used

their police vehicle to ram the car on the driver’s side and extracted the alleged offender through the passenger door. The offender’s car was perceived to be a risk, and explosive devices were believed to be in vehicles, the two officers had the additional challenge of safeguarding civilians to the scene and warning other officers who were arriving to assist.
Footage of the arrest has been widely circulated in local media and has brought worldwide acclaim, including that of NZ Police Commissioner Mike Bush. It would appear that the two persons least affected by their incredible bravery were the two police officers. Their local commander in Selwyn said one of them rang him after the arrest to say they had damaged a police car.

As the news unfolded last Friday of a mass shooting in Christchurch, we did not know of its sheer horror and its scale. We did know though that we were witnessing something we did not want, did not believe and our Muslim community and our country did not deserve.

When the full horror of what occurred came out our grief and disbelief was worsened, and now, days later, the tragic, horrific event remains incomprehensible. The team here at Integrity Community Media, publishers of The Record, extend our heartfelt condolences to those most affected — the victims and their families, the wider Muslim community and the people of Christchurch. There is no silver lining and nothing we can
say to console you. Except this: that New Zealand stands united with you. We are one. We also want to acknowledge and express our deep gratitude to those first responders, medical staff, defence forces and emergency services for everything they did during and after last Friday’s events. SIAFD responds to mosque attacks The following is the statement received from 2019 South Island Agricultural Field Days Organising Committee chairman Rodney Hadfield. On behalf of the organising committee of the South Island Agricultural Field Days, we wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of those victims of the tragic shootings that took place in Christchurch on Friday, March 15. We acknowledge that the Muslim community are an important part of the agricultural industry and many of us have employees, employers and friends that have been affected by this tragedy. After liaising with local police and our health and safety providers, we have made the decision to proceed
with holding the 2019 South Island Agricultural Field Days at Kirwee next week. We have added extra security measures such as installed security cameras and more lighting, and we will work with the police if they have further suggestions. We will be observing a minute’s silence at noon on Wednesday, March 27 out of respect to those New Zealanders who lost their lives last Friday. School behaviour praised
Fire brigade raising funds
u by Mike Isle
u by Ann van Engelen
Selwyn’s school principals have praised the behaviour of staff and students during Friday’s shooting at two Christchurch mosques. Along with schools in Christchurch, schools in Selwyn went into immediate lockdown until cleared by police, and for most that meant being confined to classrooms for three and a half hours.
The Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade is holding a Wild West evening to raise funds for the upcoming Sky Tower Stair Challenge, supporting Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.
The principal of Lemonwood Grove School Sean Bailey said his school was in lockdown from 2.30 to 6pm but encountered no problems. “We have regular lockdown practices at Lemonwood Grove, so our learners were very familiar with what to do. They coped very well under these challenging circumstances. Our community were very grateful for what we did to ensure everyone remained safe and calm over the hours.” Bailey said Lemonwood Grove would be carrying out a review this week to see if there are things they could improve on. Rolleston College was also in lockdown until 6pm. Its principal Steve Saville said theirs was a smooth process and everyone was safe and calm. “We have [also] had assemblies and activities this week designed to empower learners to embrace kindness and reject hate. “Students have been involved in a number of activities to give them personal empowerment, including letters to the police, poster making, T-shirt designs, videos etc. “The lockdown went well, and the learners and staff were amazing. This week they have responded with sensitivity and compassion.
“We are proud… but hurting,” said Saville. The principal of Clearview Primary Rob Rush said he is making staff and student welfare the school’s focus this week. “We have been overwhelmed with multiple acts of kindness and thanks from our parents. “They have been appreciative of the way our staff cared for their children during the lockdown.” Darfield High School’s James Morris said that along with the rest of New Zealand his staff and students are deeply disturbed by the murders that occurred on Friday. “We have staff and students who are directly affected. We held a service on Monday and students are going to be working with students in Christchurch with the paper chain of love project.” Anyone wanting to show their support for the victims, as many thousands have done, can donate to the special Give a Little Victim Support page givealittle. co.nz/cause/christchurch-shootingvictims-fund. Anyone wanting to talk to a trained counsellor can phone or text 1737 to be put through to a counsellor any time of the day or night. This is a free service for everyone. ¢

Field days bigger than ever
Research confirms grass is greener
u by Mike Isle
u by Mike Isle
The South Island Agricultural Field Days is an opportunity to see the latest agricultural machinery and this year promises an expanded lifestyle section and a new Tractor Pull competition.
New research by Lincoln University shows grass is indeed greener, at least when it comes to dairy farm energy use and hectare and milk production output.
p One of the oldest and largest agricultural events returns to Kirwee from March 27 to 29
Organisers expect more than 30,000 visitors during the three-day event from March 27 to March 29 with hasslefree traffic. Event coordinator Tineka Johnstone said getting in out of the field days will be quick and easy for visitors to the Courtenay Road Kirwee site. Organising committee chairman Rodney Hadfield said the interest in this year’s event has been strong and almost all exhibition sites are sold. There will be more than 100 lifestyle
stalls to showcase a wide variety of products from garden sculptures to jewellery and food products. This year will also be the first Tractor Pull at SIAFD since they moved to their new home at Kirwee thanks to Diesel Tune NZ, which is sponsoring the event and providing prizes. SIAFD takes place March 27–29 at Kirwee. Tickets $20 a day with school-age children free. Dogs, with the exception of guide dogs, are not permitted. ¢
Lincoln University PhD researcher Hafiz M Abrar Ilyas looked at the energy consumption of Canterbury dairy farms using direct (fuel, electricity, labour) and indirect (fertiliser, imported feed supplements, machiner y) energy inputs. He examined a pasture-based dairy system and a hybrid barn system that featured both pasture and barn. Hafiz found the energy footprint in pastoral systems for each hectare consumed 9.5% less energy than the barn-based. He said electricity consumption was higher due to the use of more electrical equipment in barn facilities, as was the use of petrol and diesel, with machinery involved in feed production and distribution. More labour was also required. On a milk production basis, pastoral systems consumed six per cent less energy for each kilogram milk solids. However, the barn system did use 39% less fertiliser energy but had 80% higher feed supplement energy use. Hafiz said the research suggests that energy consumption in pastoral systems in terms of both hectare and milk production output is more efficient. “To increase sustainability
p Hafiz M Abrar
consideration needed to be given to better electricity use, more efficient irrigation systems and milking sheds. Energy auditing and the use of more renewable energy sources were recommended. “Reducing the number of tractor passes, less energy-intensive feed supplements and lower fertiliser consumption would also reduce energy usage in New Zealand dairy systems.” Hafiz acknowledged help from Majeed Safa (supervisor), Professor Alison Bailey (supervisor), Marvin Pangborn, Sara Rauf, Mat Cullen, and Helen Thoday. ¢

Mayor’s message to ethnic communities
Standing together u by Amy Adams, MP for Selwyn
Greetings to all our friends in Selwyn’s ethnic communities. To our Muslim community especially, I extend the deepest sympathy and support from our council and on behalf of the wider Selwyn community. Friday’s events in Christchurch have shocked us all. This incident goes completely against everything we stand for in New Zealand and Selwyn. We are a welcoming place, opening our community to people of all backgrounds, nationalities, faiths and cultures. We embrace the diversity and richness you have brought to our community, and we are all the better for your presence here. So today we stand and grieve alongside those who are feeling such deep loss and sadness after this incident. To all our ethnic and migrant communities, we offer our support and our reassurance that p Sam Broughton we will continue to work with you and alongside you to build communities make our communities strong. These where you are welcomed and are safe. events do not define us, our love and I encourage all Selwyn people to compassion for one another in the wake continue to reach out to friends and of events defines us. Nga mihi family, neighbours and visitors, of all Sam Broughton backgrounds and cultures, and offer Mayor of Selwyn ¢ the support, warmth and aroha that
Like so many of you, I have been struggling during the past few days to comprehend the incomprehensible. The unspeakable act of violence on Friday, which tore families apart in Christchurch, has ripped through the hearts of all New Zealanders. It is a region, which has suffered the loss of many lives during the catastrophic February 22 earthquake and shed many tears at the cruelty of a natural disaster. Now we have experienced the kind of violence and cruelty, which we previously used to worry friends and family travelling overseas may get caught up in, here in our own back yard. I know that many people in Selwyn will have family, friends and colleagues who have been directly affected by this atrocity. As your local member of parliament, I am here to provide support and advice to those in need. As National Party leader Simon Bridges has rightly stated, now is not a time for politics. It is a time for grieving, and we commend Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for the dignified way she has handled this tragedy. She has provided comfort to families of those killed or injured in the two mosque attacks and
allowed other political leaders to do the same. On Saturday I visited the Christchurch Migrant Centre with the prime minister, opposition leader and other senior political leaders and I also spent several hours with the friends and families of those affected. However, for all of us, it’s hard to escape a sense of helplessness. As much as we might try, nothing will erase the barbaric act committed on our soil. It is heartening to see the response of Cantabrians reaching out to those affected through actions and messages of support, and through placing flowers and lighting candles. I also want to acknowledge the work of our police and emergency services, including the two local police officers from Lincoln who apprehended the perpetrator, and our medical staff. They are heroes, as are the victims who risked their lives to save others. We will remember them and their bravery.

Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers
After more than ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”. Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”.
To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here
Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz
was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.
Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.
Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability
“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”
Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS
Discs:
It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.
Posture: Poor
posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.
De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life
Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when
muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.
alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.
If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.
BACK or NECK PAIN? Here in New Zealand,
Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best method to manage back pain, he has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”. *Dr Kanji does not recieve royalties from the sale of Teeter Inversion Tables

Apply for scholarships u by Mike Isle
Lincoln University student Hannah Nichols has been awarded a $1,500 study scholarship, one of more than 250 scholarships that Young Farmers say are available to students in the agrifood sector. The 18-year-old dairy farmer from Dargaville is taking a one-year diploma course in agriculture offered by Lincoln University, and the scholarship has come at exactly the right time she said. “The government fees-free policy means I don’t have to pay any university fees,” she said. Young Farmers urged Hannah to consider the long list of scholarships on offer for students studying agricultural courses. “There are more than 250 scholarships available, which are designed to help entice students into the agri-food sector,” said Mary Holmes from NZ Young Farmers. “The value of those scholarships exceeds $3 million.” “It’s a shame when I hear some of the scholarships go unused because students don’t know they exist,” she said. Hannah will use the money to help cover some of her accommodation costs. Fellow NZ Young Farmers member Brenna Coleman, 23, encourages students to apply for scholarships. “There are loads available, especially for agriculture. Many close in August, so be prepared and get your application in early,” she said.
p Hannah Nichols
“Apply even if you don’t fit the scholarship criteria because if you’re the only applicant, you could still be successful.” Hannah Nichols credits her involvement with TeenAg student clubs run by NZ Young Farmers for giving her the skills to apply. She hopes to work as a technical field adviser when she completes her studies. ¢

Canterbury measles update The number of confirmed measles cases in Canterbury has gone up two to 30, with another under investigation. Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Ramon Pink said he is pleased the number has slowed, but there is no room for complacency. “Measles is incredibly infectious, and we can’t be complacent. The only way to prevent its spread is immunisation,” Dr Pink said. “We have enough vaccines to immunise those who need it most — people aged between 12 months and 28 years who have never been immunised.” Over time the vaccine will be made available to other priority groups. Dr Pink said people born after 1969 who have never been immunised, or who have measles-like symptoms, should stay away from large events or gatherings. “Those who are susceptible to measles need to be aware that it is circulating in our community. Unvaccinated people can easily catch measles if they are in close contact

with infectious people, so staying away from large groups helps to protect yourself and others.” The symptoms of measles are a cough, or runny nose or conjunctivitis, and a fever above 38.5C and a rash. Dr Pink said that anyone who believed they have been exposed to measles or have symptoms should call your general practice first, 24/7. Calls made to general practices after hours will be answered by a nurse who will advise you what to do and where to go if you need to be seen. Meanwhile, the Canterbur y District Health Board has advised that all outpatient appointments at its hospitals are going ahead, as usual, this week, following their cancellations after the mosque attacks on Friday.

Dancers’ positive achievements u by Ann van Engelen
Students at Selwyn School of Dance had a successful time at the Garden City Tappers Novice competition in Rangiora recently.
p Alex Paton, Isabella Cosgrove and Isabel Vane won the Lyrical Trio over 13 years section at the Garden City Tappers Novice competition
“We had girls dancing in the ballet, jazz, musical theatre, lyrical and contemporary sections,” says Selwyn School of Dance director, Emma Body. “The girls placed incredibly well with winning four first places in Ballet Solo and Duo classes and a Lyrical Trio class. We also had five second places, four third places and seven fourth places. “We have lots of amazing things coming up such as a student travelling to Arizona, Latvia and Australia at the end of March to train and perform at an International Choreographic Competition for five weeks with the Margot Fonteyn Ballet Academy.
“We are producing a Gala evening on May 18 dedicated to the legacy of Margot Fonteyn and to celebrate her 100th anniversary. It will be a special evening of ballet held at The Piano, in Christchurch and part of a worldwide celebration of her life and works. “Later in the year, we have five students travelling to Salzburg in Austria to train with the Salzburg International Ballet Academy for four weeks. The summer intensive cumulates with gala performances in Salzburg and Munich. We have very exciting things happening at our school, and we are very proud of how well our students are performing.” ¢

An original supporter Merv Curragh has been an avid South Island Agricultural Field Days supporter since its beginning in 1951. “The field days began at Motukarara near Birdlings Flat — the first events were small. I was 21 years old and ran the 12 speaker sound system because radio was my hobby,” says Merv. “My equipment was ancient by today’s standard — there was no power to work my valve gear and no such things as transistor amplifiers. I experimented with my transistors and made up an amplifier, which worked well.” “The second year the Minister of Agriculture was giving a speech on the back of a truck, and I put my hand on my amplifier to find it running terribly hot. I opened all my caravan windows and fanned it with cardboard to cool it quickly before it exploded.” He says they didn’t have much machinery on display but had Land Rovers, which took people up the hills for an hour’s demonstration. “The event then moved to Wigram and Tai Tapu on alternate years until now permanently at Kirwee. “We have had a lot of fun — the farm machinery wasn’t very advanced back then and consisted mostly

There has been a huge advancement over the years. “I was an engineer, and our business has adapted as farming changed from horse-drawn implements to tractors and other modernised equipment. “It has been an adventure and exciting to see how the machinery got bigger and advanced. “I am 89 years old now and have loved being involved but am not doing the commentary this year as I am unwell, but I hope to attend one of the events and am looking forward to seeing how it is going. I never imagined the field days would get this large. It is a great place for the farmers to have a day out and see what is new.” ¢

Maximum battery performance
Long term corrosion protection
“Every battery you buy and every battery you own is sulphated, and sulphation kills batteries,” says Gerard Anselmi from Recharge Battery Additive. “Every field day we do we have farmers with batteries well over 12 to 14 years and still going.” After 15 years selling Recharge in Australia and 20 years in New Zealand, the Kiwi ex-farmer says it is a simple formula. “Don’t wait till they die and try and resurrect the dead because the earlier you treat them, the less damage is done, and the longer batteries will go.” Lead acid batteries die prematurely from sulphation build-up, and a Recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons,” says Anselmi. “We are chemically reversing the sulphation process, one chemical reaction to counter another, maximising battery charge holding capacity and preventing premature battery failure. The key is to get in early before the damage has been done.” “Treat them early, repeat every two years and keep them charged, it is so simple. Don’t
wait till they die and try and resurrect the dead because after the plates have been damaged, it is too late.” Gerard and Debbie will be at the South Island Agricultural Field Days again this year at site W588, or you can purchase the twolitre online for $350. It is far cheaper at the field days however as there is no DG freight so see us at site W588 and save. The two-litre treats 42 x N-70s or about 20 bigger truck batteries, so about $7 to treat an N-70 and as much as double its life expectancy, keeping them running at full capacity. Please visit our website recharge.net.nz for more information. Yes, you can treat sealed batteries by drilling into each cell — treating and resealing with Sikaflex or a plastic bung. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries like fork hoists, golf carts, scissor hoists and standalone power system batteries. Email gerard@ recharge.net.nz for more info.
MAXIMUM BATTERY PERFORMANCE A lot of people in our Recharge Conditioning Program get 10 years, or often more, out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge occasionally to eliminate the sulphation problem. Yes you can treat sealed batteries, simply drill into each cell, treat, charge and reseal with Sika-Flex Auto or a plastic bung.

Prolan prevents rust and maintains agricultural machinery and equipment. Prolan a lanolin-based industrial lubricant and corrosion inhibitor made here in NZ has many uses within the agricultural and industrial sectors for preventing corrosion and lubricating machinery. Commercial operators, as well as farmers, have found Prolan Enduro Heavy Grade when applied to a vehicle chassis is excellent as a rust preventative on 4WD, fertiliser loaders, truck, bus and motorhome chassis. A mountain biking story
Competing at tractor pulling
u by Ann van Engelen
The Tractor Pull competition is making a comeback at the South Island Agricultural Field Day thanks to Diesel Tune NZ and competitors who will show their skills.
Darfield residents Kristine and Vince Daly enjoy mountain biking around the region with their family as a way to interact and have quality time together.
p Kristine Daly wrote her children’s book Riding the tracks on the mountain biking adventures her family have
“I worked at Annabel’s Educare and would make up songs and stories for the children, and people would say I should write a book,” says Kristine. “I decided to do something for my grandchildren on our mountain biking adventures that is easy to read and realistic so I wrote Riding the tracks. My niece Joanne Baikie Lang is a copywriter and helped me organise and design it. I sell the books online through my Riding the tracks Facebook page. The children’s book is a rhyming story about the families’ adventures around the district and beyond. “I have visited Darfield and Hororata schools explaining to the children why
I wrote it and how I got it published. Darfield students were learning how to write a book, so I talked about the structure and the difference between self-publishing and having a publisher. “Writing the book was an amazing experience and has opened up a lot of discussion for children. A teacher at Sheffield school purchased it, and the pupils discussed the fire in the Port Hills. “Our family enjoy mountain biking as an activity, and we often go to Christchurch Adventure Park and Victoria Park. They have great tracks for the whole family to enjoy.” ¢
“We are pleased to be bringing the event back to the South Island because it used to be the stronghold of tractor pulling in the country, especially modified tractors,” says Tractor Pull NZ general manager Vaughan Coy. “The origins go back to horse and cart days and predates the motor. Farmers would compete to see whose horse pulled more. They would take a barn door off, lay it on the ground, and country folk would line up and step onto it as the horse walked past until the horse couldn’t pull it any further. “It is referred to as ‘boy racer rural style’, and it takes skill to be successful. It really is a unique environment to practice in, and our sled is a special system. Competitors improve their ability to get the best

from their equipment. A guy years ago entered eight competitors because he knew his staff would learn how to set up their equipment better for everyday work. He got his entry fees back in the first week of cultivating because the workers refined how to make relevant adjustments such as tyre pressures and throttle control. “We will have three classes of competitors standard, modified and pre-1985. A number of people have said they will bring their modified tractors from different parts of the South Island, so it should be an exciting event.” Pre-entry registrations receive a free three-day pass to the SIAFD. Entry forms are available on the Tractor Pull NZ website. ¢

BUSINESS PROFILE
Work safely with dairy cows
Earthworks with Jay
The rate of injury in dairying is more than 50 per cent higher than in sheep, beef or deer farming and ACC reports that there are high rates (up to 27 for every 1,000 workers) who are crushed or kicked by an animal.
These injuries cause significant economic hardship for farmers. Thankfully there has been a downturn in the ‘week-off work’ category of injuries as dairy farmers are turning to safer ways of doing things. Wilco Klein-Ovink, faced with the frustrations of trying to treat his lame dairy cows designed the Wrangler in 1993 after finding only beef crushes available in New Zealand. It needed to be robust, and able to cope with any procedure. He built one for himself, and before long the local vets were saying they wanted all of their farmers to own one. That was 26 years ago, and the Wrangler is now an essential piece of equipment on thousands of Kiwi dairy farms. The Wrangler has winches and a back leg support, which holds the leg securely for
examination. Belly girths prevent the cow from falling during treatment. The front hoof can likewise be winched onto a support and held in place with webbing. With two feet up, the cows head in the headbail, and two belly girths under her she can’t move at all and examination can be conducted quickly, easily and safely. Calving, caesareans or other procedures can also be performed in the Wrangler. In addition to the Wrangler for cows, the company also have Alpaca shearing tables, a range of headbails, motocross starting gates, rubber matting and the automatic opening/ closing Ride Over Gate, which is excellent for centre pivot irrigators. See the Wrangler at South Island Agricultural Field Days site W231.
Jay and Julie Reiher own Jay’s Earthworks servicing the Canterbury Region for all earthwork requirements including general excavation, demolition, earthquake damage, soak pits, foundation preparation, site clearing, cartage, soil, shingle, bark and also animal burial. Jay has been in the earthworks industry for 15 years and travels to any location necessary if possible to get the job done. “I had always wanted to work for myself and am a panel beater by trade but broke my wrist so had to change careers. It fitted with my love of the outdoors, and I originally started with digger work, and we haven’t looked back,” says Jay. “As well as general assignments, we specialise in animal and pet burial. We bury a lot of horses and cows, as people find it is safer than having them made into pet food in case there are drugs or something in the meat that can kill other animals. “Family pets, no matter how big or small, Clydesdale horses and alpaca are all part of our experience. It can be a very emotional time for the owner, and it is important to create a caring environment to farewell their loved animal. Sometimes the ground is too hard to dig, so I come in and create a place of rest for them.” Jay offers a range of excavation work, including preparing driveways

for completion. “We clear sites and orchards of trees and help with house foundations and other projects. I have been in the civil construction and have just completed a contract on the Rolleston motorway. “We enjoy working in the rural community, meeting people and working with them. It is great helping clients with their different needs whatever it may be. I can advise and give ideas for projects and guide clients through what may be necessary. “If you have any queries, call me on 027 289 4027.” ¢ • All residential, light commercial drainage • Septic Tank systems • Alterations • Excavations • Canterbury Wide • Free quotes Now in newly built premises & yard in Izone, Rolleston

Brothers Shane and Marc Roberts, created the first Funky Monkey Bar for Shane’s monkeymad five-year-old daughter who would then spend every day challenging herself to get better at the activities. “Marc and I moved to Australia to have time with Shane’s family. Marc had a surfing accident and couldn’t work, and Shane asked him to help design some bars, and that was the beginning of our ‘Funky Monkey’ adventure,” says Jane. The free-standing designs are tough and strong. “We moved back to New Zealand, and Colin Burdle joined the company. FAREWELL FOREVER
u by Andy Bryenton
The tractor is a multi-role tool and has always been one since the days of power being taken off of big steam-fired engines with leather belt drives. Smaller and more compact diesel engines have meant a split in the DNA of this ubiquitous farming machine, with some true giants dominating the top of the horsepower range. Don’t think for a minute that development and design have stood still for the workhorses of the farmyard the smaller, sub-100-hp tractors, which weigh in for a variety of heavy-duty tasks.

One of the top producers of such machines worldwide is Kioti, hailing from South Korea. Their parent company, Daedong Industrial, have been making farming machines since the 1940s, and their small-to-medium sized tractors are built tough. A great example, which has proven a hit here in New Zealand is their versatile NX6020, a 60 horsepower unit packing a four cylinder water cooled diesel and the ability to mount a staggering array of tools. Need a front loader to handle feed? Not a problem, there’s two front and two rear hydraulic remotes, and power to spare. Around the back, there’s a three-point linkage able to lift 1,330 kilos, allowing for a host of applications, from mowers and slashers to transport platforms for calving duties or hauling tools and equipment, and many more. The Kioti NX6020 utilises an HST transmission with three-speed ranges, and the hydraulics throughout benefit from a dedicated cooling system to keep everything pumping in harsh conditions and under heavy loads. the land is suitable for the animals,” says Lucy. “The buffalo enjoy our climate here, and with their large cloven hooves, their weight is naturally spread allowing them not to pug the delicate soils. They produce A2 milk, which is often suitable for people with allergies to dairy. We had to learn to make the cheese and have won a couple of silver and a bronze medal in competitions. We enjoy the results of making a good quality product from our high-quality milk, which makes a beautiful cheese and we supply high-end restaurants across the South Island.”
The animals graze freely, and the herd remains the size the land can support. The farm is totally organic, and the couple’s philosophy is to live in harmony with the land, to care for and nurture it, as it does them. “Our goal is to be a worldwide exemplar of sustainable agriculture, and we plan to integrate Solar energy to further minimise the impact on the environment. “Our buffalo are Italian lineage and are characterful and have very few health issues. We sourced them from Melbourne in 2008. We have some

swamp buffalo and purebred Riverine buffalo as a result of work from the late Andrew Frontin-Rollett who put much of his life savings to start a buffalo industry here in New Zealand. “His swamp buffalo are our base stock, and we used purebred Italian bulls for eight generations, giving us what we believe to be the purest Italian water buffalo herd in the country. We continue to introduce Italian milking genetics into the herd with AI. “They are very intelligent and have virtually no health issues. The calves live close to the mothers, and the milk is very smooth and silky in texture. Our buffalo lineage scores one of the highest Mozzarella index scores in Italy. “Our main focus is modern Kiwi adapted Italian style cheeses including mozzarella, scamorza, caciocavallo and ricotta. “We also produce camembert, halloumi, yoghurt, milk, butter and

cream and our products are sold on our website wairiribuffalo.nz. “We use the old school method farming with small paddocks and the cows are milked with a DeLaval milking robot. The calves are hand raised, and the males go to local people for raising for home kill, pets or farm parks on lifestyle blocks. “They are very easy to keep and less prone to mastitis and foot rot due to their genetics and having adaptation to wet areas.
