A Selwyn group, whose aim it is to support young people with disabilities, is calling on local businesses to offer up work experience to help the youngsters become part of their local communities. The Selwyn Launch Group was formed in 2013 with the goal of supporting young adults with disabilities, such as autism and Down’s syndrome, living in the district. Founder and current chair of the group, Sandra Gilmour, said their aim is to see these young people with disabilities living as independently as possible with meaningful employment and a good social life. “We would be ver y interested to hear from any businesses that may have work experience opportunities, as we have some very keen and willing students and school leavers p Selwyn Launch Group committee members, from left: Julie-Ann Johnson, Sandra Gilmour (Chair), Lisa Larkin, who would appreciate an Ryan Thomas, Shelley Waters, Jess Waters, Lois Williscroft and Shirley Johnson opportunity to experience the workforce and contribute in the Darfield is not always that easy.” Mrs owner and a staff member from Darfield Gilmour said they have around half a Bakery will speak on their experiences working environment. “We know we are not going to be able dozen young adults who are already in of employing and working alongside to get all the kids jobs, but to get some work experience and they are grateful people with disabilities.” She said it was an ideal time for any work experience is beneficial for these for the businesses that have already new families in Selwyn who may be helped out. young people. Applications for the second round of funding under the government’s Regional Mid-sized Tourism Facilities Grant Fund close in early April. In 2016 the government set aside $12 million to be spent over four years for tourism infrastructure developments. “Due to the initial success of this scheme, an additional $5.5 million has been made available for further tourism infrastructure developments,” Ms Adams said. “This next round of funding could be an excellent opportunity to develop or improve tourism infrastructure in the Selwyn region. “We need to provide core facilities to support this tourism growth and continue to attract high-value visitors. Such facilities benefit local residents and domestic tourists, as well as our international guests.” Ms Adams said that in the last round of funding a total of $3 million was allocated to 14 projects. “This saw the development of important amenities such as car parks, toilets, rubbish disposal and minor

Licences went on sale, for the first time the coming season, late last week and are available at sports stores or online through the Fish & Game website, fishandgame.org.nz. Fish & Game’s planning and policy manager Robert Sowman said hunters should get in early. “It pays to buy your licence early as in the days coming up to the opening day of the season, there can be long queues at sports shops,” Mr Sowman said. “Buying your licence now allows you to claim your hunting spot, make a start on tidying up your maimai and avoid the last minute rush.” Mr Sowman said it was crucial hunters check the

regulations for the areas they intend to hunt as they differ from region to region. He said the prospects for the coming season are looking good. “Fish & Game staff say the wetter than normal weather in many areas has provided ample habitat for breeding and duckling rearing and, based on field observations, there should be good numbers of ducks around for Opening Day.” The game bird season opens nationwide on Saturday, May 6. The season closes on August 27 for upland game like pheasant and quail, while duck season closes earlier depending on individual regions. ¢

This year is a significant one for the clubs with Lions Clubs International celebrating its centennial year. Selwyn Lions first vice-president said Lions Club members from Golden Bay to Ellesmere in the south were represented in Blenheim. “Selwyn Lions Club has been contributing to this community for more than 28 years and well deserve the accolades it received at the convention in Blenheim. “Of the three awards won by the club, the most pleasing to club members was the Best Costume for the gala dinner for the Lions Centennial celebration ‘Barrel of Fun’. “Naturally in the Marlborough region the Selwyn costumes involved wine, and the ladies were dressed as grape vines and the men as grape stompers. In addition to the Best Costume award, Selwyn Lions member Beverley Blanche received the District Trophy for an Outstanding Lion, while Selwyn Lions

Fire restrictions change Farewell tour for pop-up project A total fire ban in Selwyn has been rescinded following the recent wet weather. A restricted fire season has been introduced in rural Selwyn replacing the prohibited fire season previously in place. “The recent rain has helped reduce the fire risk so it is appropriate to move to a restricted fire season,” Principal Rural Fire Officer Douglas Marshall said. Under a restricted fire season, only gas barbecues, crop residue and rubbish fires inside contained drums are allowed in rural areas of Selwyn. Any other fires can only be lit if a permit has been obtained from Selwyn District Council. “Crop stubble fires are permitted in a restricted fire season but landowners need to be careful to ensure there is a fire break of 10 clear metres around the edge of the fire to prevent it spreading,” Mr Marshall said. “Property owners need to check the weather conditions and be careful to avoid burning on hot days or when strong winds are forecast.” He said anyone breaching fire restrictions may potentially face a fine of $1,150, which is set by the council and

applies even for a small fire. “During the next few weeks people may see crop residue fires burning. Fire services are often called out to attend rural fires that are being supervised and managed appropriately. “It’s expensive and time consuming for volunteer firefighters to attend false call-outs, so we encourage people to consider whether a fire is an emergency before they dial 111.” A full list of fire safety guidelines that must be followed is available at selwyn.govt.nz/fire. ¢

Le Cabaret de la Vie is the latest offering in the pop-up concert project, an initiative of Christchurch musician and producer Isabella Miller Bell aka Ma Bell. The event will be held in the Nicholas Hall at the Lincoln Event Centre on April 1 starting at 7.30pm. Isabella Miller Bell said the project was initially launched in 2011 at a local tennis club in Redcliffs, which was one of the few venues still standing following the earthquakes. “The success of the first few events signalled that there was a need within communities for this type of event.” The Scottish born singer said that due to local creative communities’ grants, she began touring the theatrical cabaret show around Canterbury and further south. Since 2014 she has held three pop-up events in Selwyn communities including the 2016 Hororata Highland Games where she took part in the opening welcoming ceremony with a Celtic blessing in her native tongue.

Now six years and 30 plus shows on from that first concert in Redcliffs, the pop-up concert series of projects is winding down with a final tour of Canterbury, Marlborough and Nelson. Ms Miller Bell said it has been a fantastic project, which has brought both creative and social benefits for the artists and communities involved. “There is a real shortage of concert opportunities for the many highly talented musicians and performance artists Canterbury has to offer, and so it has been a very rewarding project which has helped to address that shortage. “I hope to continue to produce future shows but for now the pop-up project has fulfilled a vision and purpose and it is time for a break.” She said next month’s concert in Lincoln will be an evening of classic blues and jazz featuring some of Canterbury’s musicians, entertainers and performance artists including the infamous Madame Tragédie and the award-winning burlesque dancer Bonita Danger Doll. ¢

Fertilising my horse paddocks is now a breeze. I finally found a fertiliser that is limebased which can look after my pasture and my horse. I can even apply it myself and it is the easiest way to get lime on small lifestyle blocks. No big trucks needed and no white dust flying everywhere. “My test patch from the free sample is amazing - in 5 weeks the growth is beautiful.” It’s hard to get advice and suitable fertilisers for horse paddocks. Our blocks of land are usually too small for any fertiliser company to be bothered with. It can also be quite cumbersome to have a big heavy spreading truck manoeuvre its way around small paddocks with difficult gateways. Applying lime is essential on our horse paddocks, we know this, but I end up needing to put tons on and I only have 10acres. Then I found Equi-lise - a lime-based fertiliser that is pelletised. It is ideally suited to treating our horse paddocks. It is predominantly lime but it also has Magnesium, Phosphate, Sulphur,

and just a little bit of Selenium which are all biggies for keeping our horses healthy and sane. Because Equi-lise is finely ground and made into a pellet, it makes it highly plant available, meaning you need a much smaller amount to do the job. The pellets reduce the dust and mess of the job. I just hired a wee spreader for our four wheel motor bike, and did it all myself. It was a breeze. I finished the whole property in no time. “If you could have seen our little horse-sour paddock before and now”. I love how Equi-lise is all-in-one lime and fertiliser and helps to sweetens the pasture, encouraging the horses to graze the paddocks more evenly, recycling nutrients from dung and urine patches. I also like the fact that Equilise contains no synthetic chemicals or acids. A super easy, convenient and cost effective way of looking after my paddocks and making the most of the nutrients my horses deposit there.

New Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After almost ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

Come along to our expo in Kaiapoi or see us at the Field Days. (See below for details). If you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, then chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood Dave had tried everything; pressure and lots more. every time he was overseas he would search for anything “We have testimonials from that could possibly help. people with over fifty years While on one of these of back problems and even overseas trips eight years ago, have them in a number of Dave discovered the Teeter schools in New Zealand for Hang-Ups. “The first time I their special needs children” tried it, the pain disappeared he told me, “the blood to the and I was completely pain brain helps these kids and free for about 30 minutes, the results are excellent” nothing had done that” he What this means for the told me. Dave never believed aging population is that it it would fix him, “as specialists helps maintain the health of had told me it was irrevers- the brain as we all get older. ible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted Dave told me that he some serious relief”. realised that, had he not the Teeter for himself To Dave’s surprise the more tried would still be suffering, “I he used the table the longer he the pain stayed away, until would still be a miserable after nearly three months he grumpy bugger, living with was completely pain free, “I pain, that is why we do the couldn’t believe it’ he told me shows, people need to try it “I had spent large amounts of for themselves” he told me money on every form of treat- “most people actually get ment available and here was off with the pain either gone something I had never heard or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been of sorting it out for me in a talking” Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs: It

uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate. De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there. This is pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life. If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

TESTIMONIAL

DEAR DAVE AND NANCY

In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business. At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two, I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back. Thank you very much for the opportunity. Very best regards Paul Gordon Cambridge

NECK PAIN?

Come along for a free treatment Here in New Zealand, Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability • Reduce The Effects Of Ageing Caused By Gravity

Dr Kanji has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”.

Gallery open again u by Kent Caddick

The lights are back on at the Selwyn art gallery in Darfield following the completion of earthquake repairs. A reopening evening was held last Friday, which doubled as the opening of the first exhibition at the gallery after repairs were carried out on the 90-yearold building, which was built in 1927 to house the Malvern Electric Power Board offices. The building is now owned by power company Orion, and for the past 17 years it has been home to the Selwyn Gallery, which is managed by the Malvern Community Arts Council. Orion CEO Rob Jamieson said they were pleased to be able to return the building to the community. “The Selwyn gallery is an essential part of the history of both Darfield and Orion,” Mr Jamieson said. “The earthquakes taught us all that a strong sense of community is indispensable, and it was important to both Orion and the wider Darfield community that the building be repaired. “With many historic buildings lost in the area, it was a good opportunity to play a part in the refurbishment of

a treasured local community facility. “We are pleased to give the building a new lease on life so it can continue to provide a showcase for local artists for years to come.” MCAC chairperson Terri Elder acknowledged the support of Orion, the group’s major sponsor. “The efficiency of the renovations by their building team was brilliant and I would also like to thank MCAC volunteers for their work in the packing and unpacking of the gallery.” Repairs included repairing the gallery ceilings, wall linings, exterior brickwork and repainting. Some structural steel was also added to strengthen the 1960s addition to the original brick building. The first exhibition to be held in the renovated gallery features work by Whitecliffs potter Roger Chaplin along with painters Heather Johnson and Carol Moffat. The exhibition entitled A Different Landscape will run through until March 30. ¢

u by Rodney Hadfield , Chair 2017 SIAFD organising committee

On behalf of the organising committee, it is a pleasure for me to welcome people to the 66th year of the South Island Agricultural Field Days, and our second year at Kirwee. During the 2017 field days, you can expect to enjoy our ever growing demonstration displays, including silage and beet harvesting, as well as our usual demonstrations and a new initiative — lifestyle exhibits the whole family can enjoy. While the SIAFD has grown, evolved and moved with the time, it has stayed true to its 1951 aim to promote ingenuity, innovation and provide farmers with the opportunity to view comparative demonstrations, so they can make informed choices before purchasing machinery and equipment. We are thankful to the many SIAFD supporters and community, while too many to mention individually, we would like to pass on our thanks to our neighbour Tony Redmond who has been a massive help to us. Without the voluntar y committee of the SIAFD, none of this would be possible. It is with heartfelt thanks to them that we can continue to produce the SIAFD. ¢

Award winning rust protection Prolan UK has been awarded the top environmental award at Britain’s leading farm machinery, equipment and services show, heading off 900 exhibitors. This award recognises ‘a new product or innovation which has the most impact on the environment’. Prolan products manufactured in New Zealand from sheep’s wool grease, lanolin, are exported around the world and used in the coldest and toughest of environments to protect machinery and vehicles, including wind turbines. There is a growing trend in the marketplace today for cleaner greener products. Following this trend Prolan products are replacing traditional petro-chemical lubricants in Europe and one company in Denmark alone has replaced 15 products with a can of Prolan. Often it is a losing battle trying to fight corrosion on your valuable farming equipment, whether it develops from manure, dirt, sand or simply long-term storage. Prolan’s natural products protect quad bike and 4WD chassis, fertiliser spreaders — in fact anywhere where rust is an issue.

The lanolin acts as a wax barrier that prevents air and moisture getting to surfaces and so prevents corrosion. Prolan is safe on rubbers and wiring and electrics it will not break these down. Bikes can be waterblasted after use and the Prolan stays on. Many quad bike frames rust out within three years with no protection. More often than not quad bikes are replaced because of corrosion issues, while the engine and everything else still runs well. So it is not hard to double the life of the bike and increase its resale value. There is also an increasing number of agricultural fertiliser companies realising the benefits of a coating of Prolan to protect truck and fertiliser loaders chassis operating in harsh environments. Prolan is coated internally and underneath to provide protection.

The significant cost savings to fleet owners are that they are reporting far fewer WOF and COF failures from rust since using Prolan products, less downtime on maintenance, fewer part replacements and increased resale values.

Prolan will reduce costs, protect plant and machinery for longer, increase productivity, and is safe to use. Visit Prolan’s site at the Northland Field Days 282B. www.prolan.co.nz phone 0800 776526.

The force that keeps agri-business pumping

Italian expertise on show

The big machines that drive modern farming rely on hydraulics to keep on ticking, and when it comes to keeping those hydraulics pumping — Hoseman are the experts. Founded in 2011, Hoseman has quickly built a reputation throughout Canterbury as experts in their field and they have become well-known for their reliable, responsive service and commitment to excellence. The Hoseman team is headed up by Rodger Sowden, who recently came on board as a franchisee, bringing with him a formidable wealth of experience managing hydraulics teams across Canterbury. They have also teamed up with top Australasian supplier of hydraulic fittings and gear, Ryco, and the enterprise has gone from strength to strength. “We have built our reputation on being ready to swing into action 24 hours a day, but being responsive isn’t any good if you don’t have the skills to get the job done, and that is where we excel,” said Rodger. “Our team prides itself on putting our customers first, and making sure we do whatever it takes to get their equipment moving. “Recently we have set up a new North Canterbury operation; based out of the Gemmell Contracting Yard in Waikuku. This new location allows us to meet the needs of our customers in the rural Canterbury heartland.” Hoseman understands that rural Canterbury has a high demand for hydraulic services, and

to match that demand they have entrusted their most experienced technician Phil Sleeman with looking after their customers. Phil is a seasoned veteran and well-known in rural North Canterbury thanks to years of work in the area as a Mechanical Field Service Technician. “Phil will be working hard alongside the rest of the Hoseman team, keeping the wheels, scoops and harrows moving,” said Rodger. “With Ryco’s quality products and Phil’s knowledge and commitment to service, we know we will remain a trusted and reliable partner to our customers in the North Canterbury region. Hoseman will continue to offer very competitive prices, and that will never change. “Come and see us at stand 921 at the South Island Agricultural Field Days to find out what we can do for your business, and while you’re there try out the Ryco race car simulator that will be on-site.”

Agriline will be displaying the industry leading Vigolo mulchers on their site at the South Island Field Days. These mulchers are built in Italy with a very strong emphasis on quality. They are excellent for gorse, broom, tree prunings, or general clearing and topping. Mulchers are the ideal machine for topping as they chop everything up very fine so it breaks down a lot faster and therefore increases regrowth. In addition, the topped grass will work as a mulch to retain moisture in the soil. Mike Hamlin from Agriline has had more than 20 years’ experience with mulchers and has specified these machines to suit the New Zealand conditions. There are a few important points about the Vigolo mulcher that sets it apart from anything else on the market. The large diameter rotor is an important feature on the mulchers as it gives good strength and momentum and makes the mulcher easier to drive in heavygoing conditions. The flails cannot hit each other; a lot of unnecessary wear is caused by flail clash, while high-horsepower rated gearboxes ensure a long life. An overrun clutch inside the gearbox ensures your driveshaft is as

long as possible. A unique wide skid design minimises scalping and gouging. There is a double row of chains at the front of machines giving better protection, with no steel flaps to get bent and buckled. Call into the Agriline stand on site 610 at the South Island Field Days.

THE RECORD

It is no great surprise that Rick Knight, Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew chief, and his team spend most of their time ‘watching over’ rural Canterbury. The air rescue service is tasked with responding in emergency situations where access in remote terrain is difficult and time is paramount.

A

ir Rescue is joining partners AsureQuality to launch its annual mapping exercise, asking farmers to update maps and noting any landmarks and access points — all of which helps when those minutes are ticking by on life-saving missions. The Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust (CWCART) is charged with raising $7 million per annum to cover the shortfall from government funding, and they are determined to keep this 24/7 service going as it is a

lifeline in small and rural communities. “Recently the service has been stretched to its limits with the 7.8 earthquake in North Canterbury. In the first week the service responded to 19 call-outs in the Kaikoura area, versus the normal two or three per week,” said Christine Prince, CEO of CWCART. “At the time the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was deployed to Kaikoura to ensure swift response times; access has since improved but the work continues as patients must still be transported by air.” Rick Knight reflects on this time: “We worked around the clock and are fortunate that we have a well-trained and experienced crew that all worked well

During the day we have to be in the air within 10 minutes of receiving an emergency call and at night, within 20 minutes,” said Rick. “Night vision goggles mean that we can respond at any time — since the introduction of the goggles we are in a position to help so many more patients in distress like Heather. “Heather suffered very grave injuries including a broken back, neck and both legs, as well as serious brain injuries after falling 300 metres in a climbing accident. “One of her party activated a personal locator beacon, but without

Being able to purchase new equipment for air rescue saves lives.” In rural areas with limited and frequently stretched resources, sending a helicopter with an intensive care paramedic on board is often the only option. Early intervention is key. “This is particularly the case with respiratory, cardiovascular and stroke incidents. In these cases the air rescue crew work is part of a bigger plan to improve ‘patient care pathways’ — the goal is to get the patient the right treatment as quickly as possible,” said Christine. ‘Out of the blue’ is how Phil described the pain which grabbed him across the chest as he cleaned his beloved quad bike. Without letting up, the pain ran down his arm and into his neck — he knew he had to get help.” It was Phil’s lucky day, not only did a mate ‘pop by’ but also he managed to get a phone signal — as 9/10 times there is none in that area. Energy Saving with Packo Ice Builders (PIB’s) – thanks to the ice energy store build-up during night time hours, a smaller refrigeration unit can be installed plus the potential savings of off-peak power rates. Water Saving with PIB’s – bore water pre-cooling is not necessary with the correctly sized PIB. This is ideal for drought prone regions or where water supplies are restricted.

The Wrangler is best-known for its flagship product, the Wrangler, but over time several incredible innovations have been added to the Wrangler family of products. One of these is the Ride Over Gate, also on display at South Island Agricultural Field Days. Winner of the National Fieldays Innovation Award, the Ride Over Gate is the perfect tool for easily accessing paddocks in precarious places, such as those on the road or tanker track. Simply drive your farm vehicle over the top of the gate, which acts as a cattle stop before closing automatically. BUSINESS PROFILE

Kitset buildings made easy

Style is Forever! Visit Smith & Boston

Alpine Buildings is a family-owned and operated business supplying the fastest and easiest to install kitset sheds on the market, with the founding director having more than 35 years of practical experience in the industry. Alpine Industries was started in the early 1990s manufacturing letterboxes and providing general building work, which quickly progressed to kitset farm buildings. “We were the first company in New Zealand to supply ‘truly complete’ kitset sheds and still continue this tradition of excellence. Continuous development takes place to ensure our sheds are the easiest and fastest on the market to install,” said branch manager Owen Brewerton. Alpine’s experienced in-house design team think sheds 100 per cent of the time. Team members are highly trained and experienced, innovative and motivated individuals who work around the clock to quickly put together a range of structures to achieve their client’s needs. “If you require a quality, strong, bird-proof farm shed anywhere in New Zealand, our team are ready to help you with your project. “They can be built with or without a concrete floor, using solid construction with no flimsy steel and we provide all barges and door flashings with the timber beams plumb cut and ready to go.” Dry timber purlins are bolted to prewelded J-hangers and full instructions are included.Implement, storage or contractor sheds, hangers, workshops and animal shelters are part of the range Alpine Buildings has available. The staff organise all plans, engineers reports, PS1 and building consents, taking the stress away from the client. “We provide customers satisfaction and peace of mind by exceeding their expectations through the knowledge,

Time for some action

The right match of seed to soil

u by Andy Bryenton

The SsangYong brand has come to the attention of the public more than ever in recent months, with the arrival of the distinctive and eye-catching little Tivoli crossover on the nation’s highways. But this funky, retro-styled runabout wasn’t the beginning for the big South Korean brand — it was their SUVs and utes which put them on the map here in New Zealand.

We understand that no two farming operations are the same. That’s why we specialise in offering expert advice about the right product for your farm. Talk to us about our extensive range of seeds and find the right match of seed to soil, for ultimate results on your farm.

With a slow-burning campaign that has gained traction in the countryside due in no small part to the off-road abilities of their Actyon Sport 4x4 utility — and a bit to spokesperson Sir Colin Meads — SsangYong are moving beyond the status of a new and different badge and into the realms of the truly accepted. It’s hard to say no to a complete package like the Actyon, after all — in sports trim this 2.2-litre turbo-diesel ute has the carrying capacity, the ride height and the fuel economy to be a farmer’s best mate. Then again, it’s also got a slice of that most modern quality of utes — a sedan like interior and ride. The demise of the big V and V8 town car may be in part down to the rise of SUVs and crossovers such as the aforementioned Tivoli and the bigger Rexton. But in the countryside, there’s a move toward having one truck for all seasons and all motoring missions. Far from being ‘agricultural’ in terms of noise and comfort level, the Actyon Sport fits the bill.

www.specseed.co.nz

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

p Impressive economy — the Actyon ute boasts fuel efficiency and power in balance

Delivering a handy 400Nm of torque and 174hp, SsangYong’s flagship light commercial is no slouch when it comes to hauling gear or with a trailer locked on. But it also delivers another top figure, averaging 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres in fuel economy. The mathematics all add up — this is a tidy and inexpensive

ute that will cost less to run and which covers a whole lot of bases from town to highway to gravel and mud. While the Tivoli continues to turn heads in the city, it’s a certainty that financially savvy farmers will want to take a look in the Actyon Sport’s direction too. ¢

Pest threat agreement

Do you need heavy duty help to get the job done?

Kiwifruit Vine Health (KVH) has signed an agreement with the Ministry for Primary Industries to help reduce the damaging impacts of the four most common biosecurity threats to the kiwifruit and kiwiberry sectors. The operational agreement under the Government Industry Agreement for Biosecurity Readiness and Response sets out the contractual arrangements of how industry and government will work together to manage potential pests. “This means the kiwifruit and kiwiberry sectors and MPI can work together to manage and help reduce the impact of a number of pest threats on our sector, which has exports of almost $2 billion per year,” KVH chief executive Barry O’Neil said. “There are a number of biosecurity threats facing our industry. The Psa incursion, which impacted us from 2010, cost the kiwifruit industry $1 billion. “With the signing of this agreement we have committed to doing everything we can to stop another Psa-type event from occurring.” He said the agreement establishes the operational details for readiness and response activities and costsharing arrangements, to deliver better biosecurity outcomes for the kiwifruit sector. “It includes the roles and responsibilities of all the parties, including how joint activities will be cost shared. “The agreement covers the four most common threats to the kiwifruit

sector, and other pests and pathogens can be added to the agreement as they are identified.” The kiwifruit and kiwiberry sector operational agreement is the second of its kind. The first agreement was the multisector agreement for the management of fruit fly in New Zealand, and agreements for brown marmorated stink bug are currently in development.

KVH is a grower-driven, pan-industry organisation established in December 2010 to lead the New Zealand kiwifruit industry response to the Psa incursion. In November 2012, KVH was tasked by the kiwifruit industry to manage the wider biosecurity readiness, response and operational role on behalf of the kiwifruit industry. ¢
