“The government is investing just under $80 million across the two schools to give them enough new space for roll growth and deliver warm, dry and modern classrooms,” Prime Minister Ardern said. “The wellbeing of students and staff is important to their teaching and learning. This investment in MidCanterbury schools delivers on our promise to make New Zealand the best place in the world to be a child.” The government will be investing nearly $30 million in Ellesmere College. “The school buildings were built in the 1970s and 1980s, and there has been no significant upgrade since then. All but two of the school’s buildings are temporary relocatable classrooms and have experienced significant wear and tear. That is not good enough, and we are fixing it,” said Mr Hipkins. “This investment will see 35 new classrooms being provided, and the refurbishment of the existing gym and music suite.“ Around $50 million will be spent at Ashburton College and will provide 64 new classrooms and add extra nonteaching space. The redevelopment will provide space for 1,350 students, and the site will be prepared for a roll of 1,600 to accommodate forecast future growth. “Ashburton College is the largest secondary school in Mid-Canterbury with a current roll of around 1,150 students, but it has been left to fall into a poor condition and now requires a significant upgrade,” said Prime Minister Ardern. “The coalition government is investing

The school’s promotions and sports administrator Rita Spadoni said that 25 of her students competed and nine achieved top-three placings and five qualified for the Canterbury Swimming Championship to be held in April. “It was an action-packed day,” she said. “With some very keen swimmers.”

One of those swimmers, Demi, said she was excited and proud of herself for making it through to the zones. “I was a little nervous, to begin with, but then I could not wait to swim, and everyone around me was really happy and excited,” she said. Ollie said it was fun and that it was the second year he had competed. ¢

Yes, say organisers. After the balloons have performed, visitors to Hororata can this year turn their eyes skyward for a spectacular fireworks show. “We are expecting a large number of visitors to the festival so finding entertainment, which complements the balloons and can be enjoyed by the whole crowd was a high priority for the committee. Fireworks felt like a natural way to end what is sure to be another amazing autumn evening at the Hororata Night Glow,” said Hororata Community Trust executive officer, Cindy Driscoll. The Hororata Night Glow celebrates all things hot air balloons. Leading up to the ‘Glow’ visitors can walk through a cold inflated balloon or meet the pilots and experience the burners firing up close. “Surrounding the balloon action visitors will enjoy an autumn festival with gourmet food, wine and craft beer tastings, live music from Chilton House and The Sound Sensation. There will be a huge range of food vendors offering a multicultural culinary experience. Kids can join in the Glow Circus learning how to juggle and have a go at other amazing acts for free. The fairground will have even more activities this year with something for all ages,” said Driscoll.

“Visitors commented last year about how much more the festival offered than they had expected. It is worth getting to the event early to experience all it has to offer.” The Hororata Night Glow is a community event staged by the Hororata Community Trust. It brings many benefits, primarily raising the profile of this dynamic rural community. There are a number of large-scale projects in the pipeline for this district, including the proposed new Hororata Community Centre which this event will benefit. The Hororata Night Glow will be held Saturday, May 18 2019 at the Hororata Domain, 3pm–8.30pm. Postponement date is Sunday, May 19. Discounted tickets will be sold online from today. Willows planting went well Identifying Glentunnel’s history u by Mike Isle

u by Ann van Engelen

The planting of 200 native plants at The Willows recreational reserve in West Melton went off without a hitch last Thursday.

The Glentunnel Museum committee is seeking help to identify people in historic photographs they have in storage.

p Environment Canterbury parks ranger Greg Stanley helps the West Melton School students with the planting

Environment Canterbury team leader parks and forest James Page said that 75 students from West Melton school helped with the planting and they played an important role. “It was a great opportunity for the Environment Canterbury parks team to engage with pupils from our local community and showcase the value of our parks,” said Page. “The Willows is an exciting development for Canterbury, and we are pleased that these students were able to play such a key role in its creation. “We know from speaking to the kids that they had a great day out, which also included an orienteering competition. One of the kids told me: ‘This is

awesome; it’s the best day of school so far’.” Page said The Willows is a great example of what can be achieved when commitment and a lot of hard work go into what once was an area that few dared to enter, and he was sure the public would embrace The Willows as their local go-to recreational area. “We’ve been pleased with the buyin we’ve had from the local community and look forward to this being a strong asset for Canterbury’s parks for years to come,” he said. The Willows, at the end of Thompsons Road, off Old West Coast Road in West Melton is on track to be open in May. ¢

“We are digitalising our collection and trying to identify people we have records of,” says committee member Helen Leggatt. “We have had no success with identifying a few photographs from our archives. New date for Relay for Life u by Mike Isle

This year’s Selwyn Relay for Life in support of the Cancer Society has been rescheduled for Saturday, April 6 following its postponement because of the mosque attacks in Christchurch. The society’s community engagement manager Emily Murdoch said the relay would also be reduced from its usual 12 hours to six hours. It begins at 2pm at Rolleston’s Brookside Park. Murdoch said Relay for Life is celebrated each year in a number of New Zealand communities. It aims to celebrate cancer survivors and carers; remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back by raising awareness and funds to support the work of the Cancer Society. “The relay involves teams of people who walk or run around a track. In a relay style, each team needs to have at least one participant on the track throughout the event. Murdoch said the society encourage teams of 10 to make walking for six hours a little easier, though teams can be larger or smaller. “Alternatively, people can join us on the day to walk a few laps, jump on the bouncy castle, get their face painted and support the teams as they walk and fundraise through stalls at their site. The day will be full of entertainment from local bands to a

tug of war and even a Zumba class,” Murdoch said. “A particularly special part of this year’s relay is that it’s the first event with our new Selwyn Centre opened. For many years we have been trying to achieve this and have been promising those at the relay that we will achieve it. We have finally reached this goal, and it has been made especially possible through the contributions of events like Relay For Life. “Continued support from the Selwyn community through events like Relay For Life will enable us to keep the centre open and cover the ongoing costs.” Murdoch said that so far this year and despite the original postponement the Rolleston leg of the event has raised slightly more than $44,000 for the Cancer Society — well on track to beat last year’s total of $45,000. She said the society was hoping for $60,000, though the number of participants may be less this year because of the postponement. Teams can still register for the event at relayforlife.org.nz or contact the Cancer Society on 03 379 5835. ¢

We have achieved our financial goals, and with much excitement, it is now time for us to focus on our family and spending our time together. Donations advice

National Remembrance Service

Every year New Zealanders donate billions of dollars to charities. Right now, the outpouring of grief and compassion by New Zealanders after the Christchurch shootings has been matched by the charitable donations with millions of dollars donated to various funds.

u by Mike Isle

The Department of Internal Affairs has provided the following timely advice to make sure money raised ends up in the right hands and helps those in need. They say registered charities have to publish their accounts, which means people can see where the money goes and how it is spent. Anyone can search the register here register.charities.govt. nz. There are also many organisations that are doing great work in the community but aren’t registered charities. Most will have their own website or social media channel where people can find out more about them. If you are approached at your home or on the street, you are entirely within your rights to ask to see identification or ask the collector to explain the work of the charity and how your donation will be used. You can also ask how much of your donation will reach the cause. For example, 100 per cent of every dollar donated to the Christchurch Shooting Victims’ Fund run by Victim Support is used to help victims. The Department of Internal Affairs has also taken the opportunity to warn about scams. It says sadly at

times like these there always seem to be dishonest people who use the opportunity to take advantage of New Zealanders’ generosity. It could take the form of false representation in person or online. The department says to follow your instinct — if it doesn’t look or feel right then hold off giving anything until you can get more information. If you receive an email requesting a donation and it looks suspicious or asks for personal details such as your date of birth and bank account number, do not open or reply to the email delete it as it may contain links to viruses. You can report suspicious emails to NetSafe. If you want to donate online try and find a well-known platform, rather than using links in emails or on social media. If you want to make a donation over the phone, make sure you’re dealing with the charity concerned. You can look up the charity’s phone number and call them back yourself. For organisations wanting to raise funds in support of Christchurch, the department is offering its help. Contact them at christchurchdiafunding@dia. govt.nz or on 03 339 5538 or 0800 824 824. ¢

The service will be in Hagley Park and will be led jointly by the government, the city of Christchurch, Ngai Tahu and the Muslim community. Prime Minister Jacinda Arden said the service would provide an opportunity for Cantabrians, New Zealanders and people around the world to come together as one to honour the victims of the terrorist attack. “In the week since the unprecedented terror attack, there has been an outpouring of grief and love in our country. The service will be a chance to once again show that New Zealanders are compassionate, inclusive and diverse and that we will protect those values. The terrorist attack has been

significant for many countries. We anticipate international guests and visitors will want to attend and to join us in our sorrow and support for the victims and their families,’’ the prime minister said. Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel said it was a time for everyone, locally, nationally and internationally to come together in unity. “Coming together on Friday will demonstrate support for all our communities, no matter where we were born, no matter where and how we choose to express our faith. We do not stand alone; we stand together. We will not be divided by hatred; we will be united by love,’’ the mayor said. ¢

Biosecurity New Zealand and the Department of Conservation have launched an online training programme to help New Zealanders identify suspected myrtle rust infections in their backyards. The plant fungus can be hard to identify without training and can look different during seasonal changes. The new online training modules provide resources to understand the fungus and its symptoms better. “The courses are available to everyone and cover how it spreads, what to do if you find it and climatic factors that influence myrtle rust,” says Biosecurity New Zealand’s manager for recovery and pest management, John Sanson. “We are trying to understand the spread of the disease so are asking staff and the public to keep an eye out for myrtle rust over the autumn months.” New Zealand’s precious native myrtle plants including pohutukawa, rata, manuka, kanuka and ramarama

are vulnerable to the disease. The fungus, which is mainly spread by wind, generally infects shoots, buds and young leaves of myrtle plants. Infected plants show typical symptoms including bright yellow powdery spots on the underside of leaves but can also show other symptoms such as grey powdery spots during the cooler months. DOC and Biosecurity New Zealand have developed a new website as a central place to house resources and information — myrtlerust.org.nz. If you think you see symptoms of myrtle rust, especially in areas where it has not yet been found, remember to not touch the plant or collect samples, but take pictures and report it to Biosecurity New Zealand’s Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66. ¢

Government tackles rustling New rules to crack down on livestock rustling will come into force following the passing of the Crimes Amendment bill. “For too long farmers have been urging successive governments to assist in their battle against the scourge of livestock rustling. This coalition government listened, and now we have changed the law,” says Minister of Justice, Andrew Little. “Farmers and rural communities make a huge contribution to the wellbeing of New Zealand and our economy. Meanwhile, livestock rustlers have undermined rural people’s livelihoods and their right to be safe in their homes. “The two new offences send a clear message that this coalition government

Protecting Selwyn’s biodiversity Selwyn’s biodiversity includes native plants growing around lowland streams, wetlands on the margin of Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere, pockets of bush in the foothills and large mosaics of vegetation in the high country. The council’s biodiversity programmes are guided and empowered by legislation and policies as well as the Selwyn District Plan, which is currently being reviewed. As part of this review, a Biodiversity Working Group has been established, made up of key stakeholders and landowners with an active interest in the protection of ecosystems and indigenous biodiversity. “The Canterbury Plains now contains less than .05 per cent of original native plant species as a result of human colonisation,” says council biodiversity coordinator Andrew Spanton. “We need to value, protect and manage our ecological legacy; otherwise it will be lost. Our priority is the protection of existing biodiversity — particularly native plants. Indigenous biodiversity is generally considered more important than planted biodiversity as it contains the original assemblage of plants, insects and soil biota.”

Mr Spanton works with landowners, community groups, local and central government agencies and other stakeholders to protect and restore indigenous biodiversity. A major part of his role is to run the council’s Significant Natural Area programme. The programme assists landowners with funding and advice and supports the continued identification and protection of on-farm biodiversity. “I also help landowners with native plant restoration sites across the district. It has been great to see so many restoration sites developed during the last decade and it is good to support our community in this important work.” The council’s Selwyn Natural Environment Fund supports this work. For more information go to selwyn.govt. nz and search natural environment fund. Applications for the contestable fund close on the last Friday in May each year. ¢

Tactics to keep the heat u by Andy Bryenton

With winter on the way and autumn already delivering cooler mornings, the thoughts of many people are turning toward ways to keep cold and damp out of their homes. When it comes to efficient heating, there are so many options available pellet fires, efficient wood burners, gas, heat pump systems — the choices seem endless. There’s a passive system of indoor climate control, which works 24/7 with no moving parts. It can work silently at no cost for years in total efficiency, and without it, all the heat in the world will do little good. We’re talking, of course, about insulation, a topic, that has been discussed in arenas from real estate to politics in recent years, such is its importance to a healthy home. With rules changing for landlords around minimum standards for insulation in rental homes, it makes sound sense as a homeowner to treat your own biggest investment to a healthy upgrade. Imagine your home as a chilly bin; though instead of ice and cold drinks, it contains the warmth generated by your heat pump or fireplace. A house with no insulation is more like a cardboard

box full of holes no matter the efficiency of your heating; it’s radiating out into space. At the same time, cold and damp can come creeping in. Insulating the roof is usually the first thing we think of, as heat rises. It’s a good idea to check on the condition of that insulation if it’s

been a while since you’ve opened the hatch and visited the ceiling space; old insulation can settle and degrade over time. Next comes the underfloor space for those homes not built directly onto concrete. Check to see that everything is tightly attached with no gaps here.

Showhomes & Renovations Finally, and paradoxically, many people forget to consider the sides of the ‘box’ we aim to create with insulation. Heat can readily radiate out through walls, and it’s easier than you might think to unobtrusively fill the cavities between the inner and outer walls with a longlasting insulation material. Give your insulation coverage a checkup now before the cold weather strikes, and if you’re in doubt, call up a local expert. They have the tools to pinpoint where your insulation ‘armour’ has gaps, and can upgrade your level of defence to exceed government standards and achieve a healthier, warmer, lower-cost home for winter. Then it’s time to tackle the next phase of renovating for warmth — creating a dry environment in which heat spreads efficiently and in which mould and other nasties cannot grow. The crucial factor here is all about input and output. A well-ventilated home, with all the windows open, may allow a breeze to pass through and clear away the moisture caused by sources such as bathing, cooking, washing clothes and even our own respiration. It’s also a home open to the bitter winds of winter and to certain unscrupulous criminals who see an open window as an invitation to burglary. A good idea to tick off one’s checklist this time of year is a check of the extractor fans which accompany your shower and kitchen. These can clog up with dust and airborne dirt over

time, and it’s not difficult to give these often overlooked areas a clean. If your shower, bathroom or kitchen is not fitted with an extractor system, these are inexpensive to buy and can be installed by most tradespeople with the minimum of fuss either directly through the wall or via a ceiling-stored ducted tube. Pick a motor that’s quiet and efficient; there are even options to have your extractors solar powered. Heat itself can come from many sources, from the old-fashioned fireplace and its upgraded, less air-polluting variants through to the convenience of a modern heat pump. When choosing one of these systems also a great bonus in the hot summer months; it’s always best to consider placement first. Despite wishful thinking, even the biggest unit will struggle to penetrate all the way through a home with long and winding corridors or farflung rooms. An expert appraisal can usually be had free of obligation or charge; see just where your local heating expert would suggest you place a heat pump and what kilowatt range is right for that space. Any less, and you’ll be unsatisfied with the result. Any more, and it’s a waste of money. Get the basics right, and you’ll have a warm and healthy home, a big initiative nationwide from the government, but also something, which homeowners are wise to spend some

time considering. Just like a general preparing his army, think about defence

When Honda says that it has taken all the things they have learned from constructing quad bikes and off-roaders, and put that knowledge into a new project, they aren’t just talking about a few pages of lab notes. With a history stretching back to the 1970s and the venerable XR250R, and many more years before that evolving small engines, the Japanese auto giant many have discarded more info on vehicle development than some of their rivals have formulated.

That makes their latest side-by-side, the Pioneer 1000-5, a very interesting proposition indeed. With a 999cc parallel twin engine at its heart, this SxS deploys the same Unicam cylinder head design found on Honda’s motocross bikes. It also delivers better power and economy with fuel injection, a system that, let’s not forget, Honda helped pioneer for bikes in the 1980s. The bike in question, the CX500, was also fitted with a turbo, making for a wild surge of power. There’s no such over-exuberance here, though, as the Pioneer is designed not for the racetrack but for the farm. To make it fit for all manner of duties in the field, Honda has deployed another strand of knowledge from their vehicle design history. Back when the peoplemover was new, Honda experimented with modular, movable seating, allowing drivers to choose more load space or more passenger space. You can select three, four or five-seat configurations for the Pioneer 1000-5 on the fly, and the delivery of power via a six-speed

Sailors needing boats u by Ann van Engelen

The Waimakariri Sailing club needs help to encourage local Selwyn sailors to learn the art of sailing. “We have been treating sailors to fantastic sailing conditions for more than 90 years,” says vice commodore, Sam Jones. “I grew up in Doyleston, and we have sailors from Dunsandel, Rolleston, Lincoln and Prebbleton enjoying a fun and family atmosphere where we focus on getting as many sailors on the water as possible. Sailing is great for the soul, and unlike other sports, age doesn’t need to be a barrier as is proved by Stalena and Lilian Dunn who, at twelve and nine years old sail grandad’s Sunburst together, and club patron 84-year-old Ron Mackie still actively sails. Every year we host a five-hour Sunburst race with the rule being that every hour, each boat must replace one of the crew with a new crew member, and this includes the skipper. This year saw the youngest combination so far with Stalena and Lilian teaming up for the first time. Stalena often sails her own Firebug boat and Lilian often crews for grandad, but this time they took to the water together and thoroughly enjoyed the steady Waimak breeze. “It is all about time on the water for any sailor

as you never stop learning and it is not only about the juniors, we have a larger number of adults coming back to sailing or learning for the first time.” Recently, one of the club’s new young sailors, Luke, was donated a wooden Optimist boat that needed a coat of paint, a few ropes replaced and some minor repairs. “The project was taken on by Luke and his grandad, and the result is outstanding, not just how well the boat came up with a little attention to detail and care, but also the time they spent together working on the project. They launched the ‘new’ boat together that he called Penguin and now Luke is sailing like a champ. We are desperate to get boats that our new members can sail into the future. We have the skills to help make any repairs needed, and we love seeing them be sailed by happy sailors.” If you have or know of a boat that is excess to requirements and would like it to be used rather than sit in the shed and are happy to donate or sell it to an eager sailor, please contact Sam Jones on 029 200 4554 or samtjones1972@ gmail.com. ¢
