An outstanding summer for Rolleston sprinter Maia Broughton has peaked with the 15-year-old picking up five gold medals at the recent National Track and Field Championships. Competing for Canterbury in the U18 division at the nationals in Hamilton, Broughton captured the triple crown of sprinting, winning the 100m, 200m and 400m titles despite being the youngest athlete in the field. In doing so the Lincoln High School student, who turned 15 in February, broke her own U16 record in the 200m, a record she had set just a couple of weeks previously at the Canterbury Championships in Timaru. In addition to her individual success Broughton helped the Canterbury relay teams to gold in the 4x100m and 4x400m events. Broughton admitted she didn’t expect to do so well at the nationals. “It was a bit of a surprise really but the other athletes who were really good helped to push me,” she said. “It has been my best season yet and a lot of that is the result of the work my coach Bev has done with me.” Broughton, who is coached by former New Zealand representative sprinter Bev Peterson, said the conditions in Hamilton were perfect for the event with plenty of sunshine and little wind. The season is not quite over for the talented teen as she will be pulling on her Lincoln High School colours to compete at the South Island Secondary School Championships in Dunedin this weekend. “Then I’ll get a break for a few months, then back into training for next season,” Broughton said. 

Brett Haldane, petroleum division marketing manager for Allied Petroleum, said in order to accommodate the significant construction works involved, a forecourt closure is required. “The building project is expected to run for around 10 weeks, and we look forward to welcoming customers back onto the forecourt around mid-June,” Mr Haldane said. “The upgrade will involve demolishing the existing building on site so as to increase the size of the forecourt area

while ensuring improved vehicle access in and out. “New equipment is being installed and, alongside petrol and diesel, a new product ‘Alliedblue’, an exhaust fluid needed for an increasing number of modern diesel vehicles, is being introduced.” He said the site will temporarily cease trading from Monday April 3. “During the closure petrol and diesel is available from Allied’s Darfield fuel stop, which operates 24/7, and accepts credit card and eftpos payment.” 

 Lincoln landscape architecture students, from left: Olivia Xia, Sean Eustace and James Sheard hard at work at the Anzac Drive Reserve

Around 120 Lincoln University landscape architecture students and staff members recently spent a day at the Anzac Drive Reserve Mahinga Kai in East Christchurch to help with maintenance work on the restoration project. The group spent the day handweeding new areas of planting, loading wheelbarrows with mulch, spreading mulch around plants, and stabilising wind protection around the new season’s plantings. Associate Professor Mike Barthelmeh, of Lincoln’s School of Landscape Architecture (SOLA), said the school holds an annual March Vertical Studio session for all students and this year they decided they wanted to do something to help a local community

to achieve its goals. “We were lucky enough to have perfect weather for the day,” he said. “We had such a large group attending, we felt as though we were able to make a real difference. Everyone worked very hard.” Associate Professor Barthelmeh says the SOLA team places a high value on community engagement. “Where possible, we like to get involved with community-based projects that use our expertise.” Recent work includes design proposals for West Melton Primary School, Lincoln High School, the Children’s Sensory Garden for Christchurch Botanic Gardens and a new playground for the Lincoln University Childcare Centre. 

Opportunities for youth in agriculture

Gold award

 by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

Agriculture is a vital industry in Selwyn so it is important we raise awareness amongst our young people of the variety of interesting and challenging careers available for them in this sector. If we are to continue to have a strong agricultural industry in the coming decades, we will need skilled and enthusiastic people to take the sector into the future. For this reason, I am delighted that TeenAg, an agricultural youth programme run by New Zealand Young Farmers, will receive $146,000 of support under a new partnership. TeenAg consists of two core elements. TeenAg clubs provide the opportunity to learn about agriculture, and develop leadership and broader life skills. TeenAg competitions challenge competitors outside of their comfort zones to build character and leadership capabilities. The Government is contributing $50,000 towards the programme alongside $96,000 cash and in-kind support from partners including Red Meat Profit Partnership, DairyNZ,

Lincoln University and Northfuels/ Southfuels. The funding will enable around 500 more young people across New Zealand to participate in the programme. This is a great opportunity to encourage young people to engage in youth development programmes, especially in such a pivotal sector as agriculture. This is not only an excellent way to get young people involved in our local communities, but it also creates the potential for economic growth in the future. The Government is co-investing with business, philanthropic, iwi and other partners to continue to grow youth development opportunities. We are committed to providing programmes that give young people a great range of skills and experience to put them on the path to success. I believe today’s young people will be better equipped to join the workforce with a strong knowledge base and a can-do attitude. This in turn will help build a more competitive and productive economy, which will enable New Zealanders to flourish. 

 West Melton gardening students, the Eco Warriors, have done it again, taking out gold in the Oderings School Garden Competition, run by the Christchurch Horticultural Society, for the second year in a row. The theme for this year’s entry was Once Upon a Time and involved students from junior and senior classes. The school’s promotion officer Rita Spadoni said the theme of Once Upon a Time refers to the wonderment of fairy tales, myths, including New Zealand’s own legends, and a glimpse into worlds that are far away from the present. “The school was very excited to receive a gold award. An amazing effort from everyone, especially Jed Mc, Ryder A, Rosie B, Oliver S, Will C, Camryn E, Elissa C, Sophia V and Sophie H.”

Enthusiasm shines through at show  by Kent Caddick

Overcast and drizzly weather did little to dampen the enthusiasm of those taking part in this year’s Malvern A&P Show on the weekend. This year was the 118th running of the annual show held at the Sheffield Domain on Saturday. Malvern A&P Show President Jane Jenkins said while the weather may have deterred some from coming along those who turned up to take part thoroughly enjoyed themselves. “It was a great occasion and everyone rallied together to make it a wonderful day,” she said. “It was pleasing to see all the young ones competing with such enthusiasm and excitement, especially in the horse section.

“There was another top turnout in the cattle section across all breeds.” Ms Jenkins there was a lot going on over the weekend and with the South Island Agricultural Field days in Kirwee this week the number of exhibitors were also affected. “But look we have been running the show for almost 120 years and we will keep going as it is such a big part of our rural life,” she said. “The committee did a fabulous job and they really punched above their weight with no real dramas on the day.” 

Lifestyle blocks purpose but with the increase of performance of traditional dairy breeds, they are now essentially a beef animal.” Shirley says they grow well and the stock handle all weather and are versatile for grazing hard country and land with rough feed, and they are a good size for lifestyle block owners. The meat has good flavour with nice marbling. “The cattle are bred all around the country and there is a polled strain as well as the horned ones. They are a good breed for anything really.” Last year the Welsh Black Cattle World Congress was held in New Zealand with 46 people visiting from across the world, including, Germany, Australia, United Kingdom, Luxembourg and Wales. “They are still popular in Wales and have been cross bred with an exotic cow but the farmers there are going back to the original now. A Canadian visitor said they are great for the snow conditions where they live,” said Shirley. “They are good for cold climates because of their thick winter coat. “They need a shelter to hide from the wind but they don’t necessarily need housing in tough snow conditions as they hold their own heat longer than other breeds. “They have very thick hides and like all animals they do need shade in the summer.” In summer and in hot climates this coat is replaced with a smooth, glossy coat. “Welsh Blacks are a true hill country breed of cattle and are generally easy calving,” said Shirley. “Their history of being raised in harsh, outdoor environments and their ability to convert rough feed into weight gain and having a willingness to forage makes them an ideal animal for any property.” The calves are known to be vigorous and hardy and do not present feeding problems in dairy operations. up to 300 days and they have a long productive life of 15–20 years. “This hardy breed has much to offer modern farming systems with its ease of production and award winning succulent meat. For more than 100 years the Welsh Black Cattle Society has nurtured, promoted and sought to improve the breed — a job which is continuing.” Margaret and Edwin Foord have 40 head of cattle and say they like them because of their temperament. “I was first introduced to the breed through some bulls my dad had. They were older Welsh Black and they were very calm and mellow to be around,” said Margaret. “Our children mistook them for stumps in the bush and it was then that I got really interested in the cows. My husband and I foot farm so we have a lot to do with the cattle and interact with them. “The more we walk and talk to them the more they trust us.” Margaret says cattle they have brought in that had never been handled are now people friendly and as the years go on their progeny have become more trusting. “We sometimes have open days with 50 people visiting and our cattle handle it. They grow well on moderate or rough tucker. At present we are clearing off the neighbour’s property getting rid of the rank tough stuff including gorse and turning it back into pasture. “They are wonderful cattle. They grow well and we don’t lose as many stock because they are so hardy. We highly recommend these cattle for all types of farms, they suit hill as well as low country.”

Fast ways to get new business

SELWYNGALLERY

During busy times and times when finances are stretched marketing can be something that gets pushed to the side. The following ideas can be easily slotted into your everyday functions. So set aside a small portion of time and money and follow these tips to get fresh business. Feed your relationships Capture the details of every single person that comes into contact with your business. Use the details to get in touch. Once you’re in touch, stay in touch. Think of ways you can ignite your relationships with these people. You can phone them, email, send a letter, some marketing collateral, testimonials, a newsletter or card or just invite them for a coffee. Bottom line — make putting time into your relationships a continuous thing and don’t let potential sales get away. Get online Ninety three percent of Kiwis look for information about products and services online yet only 30% of New Zealand firms have a website. So if you’re not online, you need to be. If you don’t have a website fill the gap with a business Facebook page until you get one or contact us at the Selwyn District Business Hub. Our

website strategic partner can build a simple starter business website for minimal cost. With a business presence online your business is open 24/7. It also adds credibility to your company as people doubt the security and reliability of a business that doesn’t have a website. Review your prices Let’s face it, the cost of everything has gone up, but what about your prices? If your prices are still the same today as they were two to three years ago then you should increase them. But it’s a competitive market place I hear you say. Even small incremental increases in prices can make a real difference to your bottom line. So try it and see. Referrals — the easy way to sales It’s always easier to sell to someone who has been referred to your business. This is because you have been recommended by someone whose opinion they trust. Straight away your business has instant credibility. Imagine if every person you did business with gave you just one referral. How much of a difference would that make to your bottom line? A simple way to ask for referrals is to

Pay attention while driving  by Sara-Jane Ludemann

It is now the time of year when conditions are rapidly changing for drivers on the road. After driving during the summer months we can become complacent with dry road conditions and good visibility. Of course we still have the problems with speeding, drunk drivers, inattention and talking on phones, but we are now beginning to have other factors to take into consideration. They include: bad visibility, water on roads, spray off oncoming trucks, ice in shady places, maybe snow, late afternoon sun causing sun strike, pedestrians wearing darker clothing (that being the norm in winter), tourists and, in country areas, stock on the road in fading light. These are just some of the added hazards we now have to think about while driving on the road as we head into the winter months. Of course, bad driving habits such as looking at the passenger while talking to them still persist. One really doesn’t have to look at someone to have them hear you. And while you are looking at them, your eyes are not on the road. Things can happen in a split second. On the road things can get tough. After spending 30 years in an emergency

service I know first-and what inattention on the road can produce and it is not pretty. Death and permanent injury as well as major or minor injuries all have an impact on people and their close families and friends. Another facet some of us have to face is drivers fleeing from the law. Drivers who have just got their licence often think they know it all and try to impress their mates and girlfriends but can easily finish up in a pine box, sometimes taking innocent victims with

them. Inexperience and haste, along with alcohol and drugs are often contributing factors in causing accidents. Law abiding public can sometimes be at the raw end of these incidents as well. I urge all drivers to take extra care this autumn and winter and to stay alert at all times. Keep your eyes on the road and keep a lookout for the unexpected. That way, we may all survive the conditions of extra hazards in the months to come. 
