Childrens day a hit p In the words of the Lou Reed song, it was A Perfect Day last Sunday when hundreds of Selwyn residents, and many from further afield, swamped Foster Park in Rolleston for the Selwyn Parenting Network 2019 Children’s Day event. As befitting the occasion, children were the focus, and there was plenty to keep the tamariki enthralled. The family-friendly event had plenty on offer for all ages, including Irish dancers (above), Scottish dancers, rides, drama workshops, competitions and prizes. Even the Rolleston Rugby League and Mana Ake teams were there cooking up a storm with 15,000 free sausage sizzles. Read the full story of the day on page 6. Innovative technology developed by Lincoln Agritech and aimed at minimising waste in the food processing industry has received major recognition at Australia’s largest agricultural technology event. Dr Matthew Jones, of Christchurch start-up company CertusBio, took home the top cash prize of $20,000 in the Investment Ready Pitch Tent competition of the inaugural EvokeAg event in Melbourne. Dr Jones’ winning concept is
an automated technology that reduces industrial food waste by 40 per cent. CertusBio commercialised the solution, which was developed by the Lincoln University-owned multidisciplinary R&D company, Lincoln Agritech Ltd. Dr Jones
said that with two to three per cent of all processed milk disappearing down the drain, the dairy industry loses a staggering NZ$12.8 billion each year globally.

Organisers estimate that more than 100 participants got on their bikes, put on their running shorts and in some cases swam the course. Overall, the three-race series attracted 321 entries. Selwyn Sports Club chief executive Michael Wilson who helped organise the marque event said the trust was delighted with the way the series had gone. “It was fantastic having a range of experience levels, and ages represented across the series.
“It was really rewarding watching some of the less experienced and younger athletes grow in confidence as the Series went on. Friday was a perfect sign off for 2019, the weather was great; there were plenty of smiles and encouragement for all.” Participants had the option of competing in four events: the long and short course duathlons (biking and running) and the short and long course triathlons (biking running and swimming). ¢

It is not every day that a man goes on Trade Me to buy a train, but that is exactly what West Melton resident Andrew Wilson did, and he succeeded.
p Dr Matthew Jones, CertusBio CEO, wins the AgriFutures EvokeAg Investment Ready Pitch Tent prize in Melbourne p Little River Railway Station Trust members pictured with DSA 261. From left: Jody Tuckwell, Colin Higginbottom, Andrew Wilson and Robin McFarland
The self-confessed train buff and Little River Railway Station trustee said he has a passion for trains since childhood. There is nothing unusual in that — most children go through at least a phase, but few actually wind up buying a train. Andrew got his chance when he was on the hunt for a train to grace the muchrevered and historic Little River railway station. What he found, on Trade Me, was Dsa 261. DSA 261 was built in Leeds by Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds England but spent its entire working life in the South Island as a heaving shunting locomotive, used in the making and breaking down of freight trains. It was something of a workhorse, Andrew said, noting that it entered service in 1957 and was still hard at it until retirement in 1985. The train didn’t arrive in Little River under its own steam. Perhaps somewhat ignominiously for the old ‘workhorse’, it was transported from its then Dunedin home to Little River by road. In fact, it is unlikely to be going anywhere on or off the rails soon. The trust’s intent for the venerable train, Andre explains, is to leave it as a static display. “We have started on restoration, and we are a small group with limited
resources but offers are coming in to assist and advise us on how to do it, when we are delighted to accept. “For the moment, however, we are content to use Dsa 261 as a further attraction at the [Little River] station, to climb aboard and have photos taken. “We hope people can come and create or relive memories at our beautiful location,” Andrew said. The Little River railway station and Dsa 261 are open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm. Anyone wanting to help with the restoration or funding can email the trust at lrrst1886@gmail. com. ¢
“Cer tusBio is transforming industrial food production to prevent this type of waste,” he said. “Our solution saves money for processors and helps them meet their social responsibility to safeguard the environment for future generations.” The technology includes a biosensor device that provides real-time insights into when food is wasted, a dashboard giving company managers unprecedented visibility on losses and a dedicated consultant to optimise food production. “Other companies have been in the market a long time but do not provide accurate enough information to prevent this type of food waste.”
On scope, on time, on budget everytime!
Dr Jones said he developed CertusBio to combine two of his great passions — the reduction of waste and the development of great science. ¢

This one will have just about everything say organisers of the 2019 West Melton Country Fete to be held at the West Melton School grounds on March 31. The Fete is spearheaded by a subcommittee of the Friends of West Melton School (formally the PTA) with proceeds helping provide new play areas and outdoor spaces for the school.
p A chance to see it all with a view to getting away from it all
The company’s co-owner Paul Robinson said Rolleston Travel Expo’s aim is to bring together leading travel and tourism operators and present the public with what he describes as a window to the world. “It’s one way that the public can take their time and have the convenience of examining the options and engaging with the suppliers all at one time and in one place,” he said. “There will be everything from cruising the Antarctic to touring Vietnam. From top-of-the-line cruise liners to cycling tours. Anything goes, and everything will be on display.” Mr
Robinson said there would be 17 travel operators and 57 brands represented and 15 travel-related presentations. “It is not a selling exercise in the sense of purchasing at the time. It is more an opportunity to talk to the suppliers directly and get the information needed to make a decision at a later time. “Of course, helloworld would like to help you at that time,” Mr Robinson said. The helloworld Rolleston Travel Expo is on Saturday, March 30 at the Rolleston Community Centre, 10am to 3.30pm. Free admission. ¢
p What would a fete be without inflatable fun? Now almost a tradition
The first fete two years ago attracted 5,000 people through the gate and raised $30,000 toward a new playground for the school. A member of the organising committee Hannah Fifield said the school was hoping for similar success in 2019. “We will repeat much of what we had two years ago. That includes everything people want and expects from a traditional country fete; homemade preserves and baking, petting zoo and pony rides, scarecrows, cotton candy and bacon butties plus more than 100 stalls full of beautiful crafts, homewares, clothing, food, health and beauty products. Playcentres new beginning Seven measles u by Ann van Engelen
West Melton Playcentre will be celebrating the grand opening of their new premises that replaces the original centre, which had age-related issues.
p Children at play at the new West Melton Playcentre premises
“Our committee has worked hard over the past several years to complete the project, and we are very proud of where it is today,” says public relations officer Fiona Giles. “We are celebrating the playcentre history and heritage of the past 40 years in West Melton, which was set up by Margaret McFedries. The new rooms have been named in her honour as a homage to her dedication to the families who have been involved and supporting each other over the years. We would love people that don’t know how playcentre works to come along and see us, and we invite past families to come and see how far we have come.”
Mayor Sam Broughton will be cutting a ribbon, and there will be a cake, sausage sizzle, face painting and activities for all to participate in at the event. “Throughout the week all age groups are catered for up to six years old. We always have activities going and are very accommodating with different abilities and special needs if anyone has certain requirements. “There are spaces available for families to join us throughout the week.” The celebrations are open to everyone and will be on Sunday, March 10 from 10.30am until 12.30pm at 1167 West Coast Road, West Melton. ¢

cases now confirmed u by Mike Isle
Two further cases of measles have been identified in Canterbury bringing the total of confirmed cases to seven. The two new cases are a preschool-age child and a woman in her 40s. Although all reported cases are from Christchurch, measles is a highly infectious, potentially life-threatening disease and Canterbury District Health Board is warning cases could occur anywhere. Medical Officer of Health Dr Pink advises that people are infectious from five days before the onset of the rash until five days after the rash appears. “People should stay in isolation from the time they may have become infected until five days after the rash first appears. “It means staying home from school or work and having no contact with unimmunised people. If others in your household are unimmunised, they need to stay in isolation too for fourteen days from their likely first exposure,” he said. “Because measles is so infectious, it’s important people with symptoms don’t visit their GP or after-hours clinics but instead phone their family doctor/general practice team for

advice to avoid infecting other people. People should only go to the hospital if it’s an emergency and should inform staff immediately if they think they have measles. “If you have had two MMR vaccinations or were born before 1969, you are considered immune to measles. Everyone else may be vulnerable to infection,” Dr Pink said. Those born overseas or who are unsure which vaccinations they might have had should contact their general practice team for advice. The measles vaccine and the appointment to have it is free to all those who are eligible for funded healthcare in New Zealand. “As the number of confirmed cases climbs, the risk of getting measles increases for those not immunised,” Dr Pink said.

Children’s Day Sizzles u by Mike Isle
When the sun shines, entertainment and activities are plentiful, and Selwyn families arrive in their hundreds, it ensures that a free family day event has all the ingredients and a recipe for success! After months of planning, and dedication from committed volunteers, the Selwyn Parenting Network 2019 Children’s Day went as planned, with overwhelmingly positive feedback pouring in for the three-hour event held at Foster Park on Sunday. Community collaborations featured in everything from the activities on offer, through to the stage entertainment of Highland Dancing, Interactive under fives fun, StarJam ‘jammers’ and Irish Dancing to close. The double-decker bus rides were popular, as were the soft archery and mini fitness sessions for children and parents offered by Selwyn Strength. Short drama workshops organised by the team at CentreStage Rolleston were also right up there, along with the annual staples of pony rides, bouncy castles, ride-ons and sports activities. Local community organisations and service providers from across the region offered a range of fun, interactive and sensory activities, with competitions and prizes to be won. The Rolleston

Creating a more caring and compassionate future world must start with our children: the future of tomorrow,” said Kate Webb, coordinator for Selwyn Parenting Network. “Our role within Selwyn, to help strengthen families, parents, caregivers and children, is one that we do collaboratively with a vast range of dedicated community players, service providers and passionate volunteers. Every year, Children’s Day NZ provides us all with the opportunity to celebrate our children and put Tamariki first. “We love being able to pull this event together, and the icing on the cake is seeing the smiles, hearing the laughter and sending the overwhelming family spirit.” ¢

Darfield duo on the podium u by Mike Isle
The talented team of Tom Welsh and Ben Millar from Darfield High School have had a podium finish at the Tasman regional finals of FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year competition. The pair, both 17, finished third in the final contested by 40 high school students from across the region. It is not the first time Tom has taken a leading role in the FMG Junior Young Farmer competition. In 2017 he along with fellow Darfield student Brooke McKay won the TeenAg Team Award at the regional finals. This year’s first place went to Rangiora High School students from Rangiora High Caitlin Rhodes, 16, and Luci Grigg, 16, who won the hotly-contested event at the Amuri Showgrounds on Saturday. Caitlin and Luci are the second all-girl team to win an FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year regional final this year. About 60 high school students from across the Tasman region worked in pairs to tackle a raft of challenges. The modules tested the students’ practical and theoretical skills and included a quiz hosted by comedian Te Radar. “These students are operating at a very high level,” said Te Radar. “The questions they were answering in the

Georgie Lindsay, a Canterbury shepherd has made history after qualifying for the prestigious FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final. The 23-year-old from Tasman beat seven other contestants and is the first woman from the region to make it through to the grand final in the contest’s 51-year history. She also picked up the innovation award. “It is a big shock — I have had a lot of support in the lead-up to this event, especially from my family and my employers,” said Georgie. It was her first time competing in a regional final that saw finalists from Golden Bay, Westport and across Canterbury tackle a series of gruelling modules, including a fast-paced agriknowledge quiz. “It was definitely a challenging competition that put us all under a lot of pressure, which was awesome,” she said. The prestigious contest has undergone a major overhaul since marking its 50th anniversary in Invercargill last year. “We are now showcasing all aspects of what it means to be a modern food

has a Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Honours) from Lincoln University and is one of only five woman nationally to ever qualify for the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final which will be held in Hawke’s Bay in July. ¢

Rolleston College succeeds at competition

u by Mike Isle
The best of Selwyn’s promising young athletes were on show in the inaugural Selwyn Secondary Schools Athletics Competition held last week at the Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub in Wigram. Hundreds of athletes proudly representing each of the district’s secondary schools participated in the track and field events, their numbers almost matched by excited and vocal spectators. Lincoln and Darfield high schools and Ellesmere and Rolleston colleges competed in perfect conditions, and organisers report that competition was fierce but in good spirits. One of those organisers, Rolleston College teacher Athena Evans, said she was thrilled with her school’s representation. “There were 46 athletes representing Rolleston College, and it was amazing

to see our colours in nearly every event and age group. “They represented the college with pride and integrity, supporting each other and as well as athletes from other schools. “Not only did Not only did the Rolleston College athletes make us proud with their positive attitudes and behaviour, but also with their results.” Anthea Evans said that attention was now turning to the 2019 Canterbury Secondary Schools Athletics Championship to be held later this month in which Rolleston College will again be entering a team. ¢
