Young eco-warriors, from left, Arwyn, Lincoln and Reed Dewell from Leeston, lend their help to a rescue mission, saving fish and eels stranded in pools along the drying Selwyn River
Starting at the once-popular swimming hole at Coes Ford, the volunteers walked down the river with nets, looking for water holes filled with stranded eels and fish. The event was organised by Environment Canterbury biodiversity
officer Johannes Welsch, and the volunteers were joined by Department of Conservation and Selwyn District Council staff as well as local iwi in the rescue mission. “I was really surprised at the turn out of rescuers given it was such short
notice,” Mr Welsch said. “We had a wide range of people who turned up to help with the fish rescue, everything from families with young children through to grandparents who helped out. continued on page 3 …

Set to open in 2019, Lincoln South Primary School will be a full primary school (Years 1–8). Stage one of the $14 million project will cater for 450 students, with the roll due to grow to 700. It’s the latest in a raft of new schools popping up across central Selwyn with three new primary schools and a high school opening in Rolleston over the last 12 months . Ms Adams said she is delighted Lincoln is to gain another primary school. “Selwyn is a very attractive area for young families, and as the population grows, it’s important Amy Adams says Lincoln South Primary adds to Selwyn’s educational infrastructure that our community’s schools have the capacity they need to accommodate South Primary will have state-ofroll growth. the-art, modern and comfortable “This investment will help ease the buildings to ensure local kids and their pressure on Lincoln Primary School and teachers can work in the best possible will mean our education infrastructure is learning environment. keeping up with the significant growth of “This investment is wonderful news our region.” for Selwyn and comes as part of the Ms Adams said, like all the new government’s $1.137 billion Greater schools and redevelopments this Christchurch Education Renewal government has invested in, Lincoln property programme.”
Champion swimmers West Melton School students have been making a splash recently with the school holding its Year 5 to Year 8 swimming championships. The champs were held in the school pool over three mornings with more than 50 children
competing in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly competitions. As a result of the competition, the school selected 28 swimmers to go to the Lincoln Zone swimming event, which was held at the Southbridge pool.

Selwyn river rescue
As a result of becoming a media partner of Newsie, a new online national news service, The Record website has had a facelift.
Volunteers rescuing inaka and eels from pools along the dried up Selwyn River bed
“One of the exciting things for me, was to see it wasn’t just older people who were involved in the fish rescue but it was a multi-generational effort, it was the whole community coming together to help out.” He said the Selwyn River has been drying up for some time and they have been keeping an eye on the development of the isolated puddles along the river. “I got a call from our river engineers who said they had noticed there were a growing number of isolated puddles particularly around the Coes Ford area and that we needed to get the fish and eels out and to safety.” They rescued about 2,500 inaka (juvenile fish) and 300 eels, which had become trapped in the diminishing puddles while headed for Lake Ellesmere. The endangered longfin eels travel through the lake and out to sea where they breed. The eels and fish that were rescued from the pools along the Selwyn River were then relocated to the lake. “The 1D Cardale St, Darfield Phone: 03 318 8836 darfieldpreschool@xtra.co.nz ï

eels were a real focus for us and we made several sweeps up and down the river to ensure we got as many as we could,” Mr Welsch said. “Once we had rescued the eels from the puddles they were put in cool aerated storage tanks and then ferried downstream to the lake.” He said they are hoping they do not need to mount another rescue operation but a lot of that will depend on weather conditions. Meanwhile, the Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee is looking into the possibility of using water from the Central Plains Water scheme to help boost the flow of water into the Selwyn River. The committee recently hosted a workshop in Lincoln to discuss concerns over the river’s flow particularly around Coes Ford. Following the workshop the zone committee agreed to look further into using CPW water to help flush the river.
Newsie is a collaboration of New Zealand-owned and independent news companies, coordinated by Sun Media, the publishing company which operates the SunLive news website based in the Bay of Plenty. Managing director of NorthSouth Multi Media, and publisher of The Record, Allan Mortensen, said he is extremely excited about the opportunity to be involved in an independent news website. “It will be based on historical journalism values that help to provide a service that is far removed from an extraordinary low standard that the multinational news organisations seemed to have achieved by developing their digital presence based on clickbait and sensationalism.” Sun Media director Brian Rogers said regional newspapers and websites are being added every week to the Newsie stable. “Newsie is in the early stages of development, but we’ll be adding many more independent publishers to
the pool in coming months, along with freelancers throughout the country, and offering New Zealanders their own voice.” He said Newsie will have an incredible depth of regional coverage thanks to its media partners. “They are the eyes and ears of their communities and are committed to feeding a rich variety of important regional news, colourful stories of New Zealanders and some entertaining tales. Clickbait is banned and the Kardashians outlawed.” Mr Rogers said Newsie was a cooperative effort of independent publishers who are united in their commitment to pool resources and to create a truly independent and balanced national news service. “We have secured reliable and balanced sources of international and national news, and sports feeds, so as Newsie grows and expands, there’ll be more to read, and opportunities to comment and give feedback.” To view the new website for The Record go to www.therecord.co.nz.

Business opportunities Motorcycle training offered in Selwyn In an effort to reduce motorcycle accidents on Selwyn roads, motorcyclists are being offered the opportunity to develop their skills so they can be safer.
by Sam Broughton, Selwyn Mayor
The year 2017 is well underway and many of the usual start up activities now complete with recent data highlighting the extraordinary community we are privileged to live in. Our schools are charging through Term 1, with students settling into their subjects and high schools holding their swimming and athletic sports days. The harvest for farmers is well underway and complete for some. The dry end of summer is beginning to put pressure on stock feed. Businesses are continuing to deliver manufacturing and services for our community, and the end of the financial year is drawing near. The fires on the Port Hills have highlighted the great work of our volunteer firefighters. I would like to particularly thank the employers of these firefighters who have allowed them the time, at either very short or no notice, to contain, control and extinguish the devastating fires. A
recent report released by the Mayors Taskforce for Jobs has highlighted a number of statistics about education and employment in Selwyn. A few points to note are: 95% of our young people leave school after at least attaining NCEA Level 1. 73% of all businesses in Selwyn are owner-operators and have no other employees. 2,000 of our 6,000 businesses are in the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector (primary production). There are plenty of opportunities in Selwyn for new businesses to set up or grow into. If you are looking at starting something new, make sure you get good advice, and I look forward to seeing your success through 2017.

Motorcyclists completing a Live to Ride course in Selwyn recently
Selwyn District Council is offering motorcyclists the opportunity to receive vouchers so they can attend motorcycle skills training for free. The Live to Ride sessions are being held in March and April. Selwyn road safety coordinator Ngaire Tinning said that from 2012 to 2016 there were 47 motorcycle crashes in Selwyn, resulting in five fatalities, 27 serious injuries and 25 minor injuries. “The number of motorcycle crashes is concerning, and the council originally offered the Live to Ride training in 2013 to try to reduce the number and severity of crashes in Selwyn, with 47 Selwyn riders having participated in motorcycle training since 2013,” Mrs Tinning said. “While motorcyclist numbers are increasing, the number of motorcyclists involved in crashes in Selwyn from 2012
to 2016 has reduced from 58 in the 2007 to 2011 period. “The Ride Forever training being offered this year provides the opportunity to attend motorcycle skills coaching where people can refresh their skills, and learn and practise new techniques.” Mrs Tinning said the course offers motorcyclists the opportunity to learn how to assess risks, adopt safer rider positions on the road to increase their visibility to drivers and avoid actions that may cause crashes while riding. “The course provides a hands-on opportunity to learn practical skills that can be applied throughout the rest of your riding life.” To register or find out more about the vouchers and local training sessions, contact ngaire.tinning@selwyn.govt.nz or phone 03 347 2901.

Children’s day a hit photos by Sara-Jane Ludemann
It was a great turn out for the 2017 Children’s Day event held at Rolleston Reserve and Community Centre on Sunday. The event, which was held in near perfect conditions, was organised by the Selwyn parenting Network to celebrate the lives of the young ones in Selwyn. There was plenty for the young ones and their families to see and do, with a wide variety of displays and activities both on the reserve and in the community centre. Police, fire, ambulance and the army were in attendance with many enjoying the opportunity to get up close to
the emergency service vehicles, with youngsters taking the opportunity to see how fast they could run while being checked by police speed radar. The indoor events also proved popular as many sought shelter from the heat outside. The Lego room was a real hit with children, and their parents, creating masterpieces from the plastic blocks, while the wooden toys in another room also proved popular.

Emergency over Bioblitz back on but fire ban continues by Kent Caddick
The Bioblitz is returning to help Selwyn residents learn more about the district’s flora and fauna.
by Kent Caddick
A total fire ban has been extended in Selwyn district, partly due to the number of local firefighters continuing to be involved in mop-up operations following the recent Port Hills blaze.
The Bioblitz is an initiative of Lincoln Envirotown and will focus on the many species and life forms which can be found in and along the section of the Liffey Stream that passes through Lincoln. The 24 hours of Bioblitz exploration and discovery will begin on Friday, April 7 at 3.15pm starting from the Anglican Church in Scientists young and old conducting studies and tests at the last Lincoln opposite the Bioblitz Photo by Mike Bowie fire station. He said the native plants and the “It is very unusual to have so many scientists from such different fields to fungi of the areas will also be studied. “This means that the families who work together and with members of the public. This makes the Bioblitz a come will actually be ‘doing’ the science rare and wonderful opportunity for all and collecting the information that will be used in the research. of us.” “The excitement is further increased Mr Fitzjohn said the exploring groups will cover all aspects of the flora and by the fact that many of these activities will happen at night as well as in the day fauna to be found. “There will be bird walks, lizard due to the nocturnal nature of some of walks, mammal walks and spider the animal life.”
Selwyn firefighters continued involvement in Port Hills fire clear-up operations is one of the reasons why a total fire ban in the district has been extended
The ban has been in place throughout Canterbury due to the Port Hills fire, and the prohibited fire season continues this fire ban in Selwyn. The district’s Principal Rural Fire Officer Douglas Marshall said the total fire ban will remain in place as Selwyn is becoming very dry, meaning that fires can start easily and quickly get out of control. “The ban is also in place because a number of Selwyn rural fire volunteers are still involved in reducing hotspots
from the fire response to the Port Hills fire, and given the scale of the fire, this involvement will continue for some time.” Meanwhile, the state of local emergency put in place by the councils of the Selwyn District and Christchurch City has expired. The decision not to further extend the state of emergency was taken following advice from the Rural Fire Authority, NZ Fire Service, police and civil defence.

Malvern A&P Show 2017 Show all about tradition
david stevenson contracting
by Kent Caddick
• • • • •
For 2017, Malvern A&P Association President Jane Jenkins says this year’s 118th show is about tradition. Not surprising perhaps for someone whose great-grandfather, W J Jenkins, was the 1910 show president and for someone who carries a family name which appears now seven times on the list of Malvern A&P Show presidents. But it’s not all about personal or family tradition for Jane. “The show is really about community and establishing community traditions, because if we don’t get in and own the show, no one will do it for us,” she said. “There are a lot of other events or sports on at the same time, which can lure people too, so we are competing against those activities.” Jane has been involved in the organisation of the Malvern A&P Show since 1994 when the beef cattle section was reintroduced to the show. She is well-known throughout New Zealand for her breeding of Angus cattle, which she does under her Floridale Angus bannere. “I do remember being involved as early as 1971 when my father Harley, whose cousin Tom Jenkins was president at the time, took a bull to the show. “Also when I was younger my grandfather, M E Jenkins, had a pony stud and I used to ride and help with the pony events at the show. “I learnt a lot of the tricks of the trade, in terms of showing cattle, from my Aunties, Beulah and Zelda, who were fanatical about their horses and ponies.” Jane, with her affinity for beef cattle, is

Double success for Malvern by Kent Caddick
There was plenty to admire about the performances of Selwyn’s Megan Hands and the Darfield High School teams in their respective categories at the Tasman regional finals of the New Zealand Young Farmer of the Year competition. The individual winner of the regional event, which was held in Hokitika on the West Coast, would secure for themselves a spot in grand final of the FMG Young Farmer Competition in July. Ms Hands, a Malvern Community Board member from Darfield, took home the Massey University AgriGrowth Challenge and the AGMARDT Agri-Business Challenge titles, as well as the Tasman Regional Award for the highest placed female. While she didn’t achieve her goal of becoming only the fourth woman to have made a grand final in the 49 years of the competition, the 27-year-old farm environment consultant proved too much for the only other female competitor in the eight-strong finals field, Ellesh Norrie from the West Coast. “Competing in a regional final was a big step up from competing at the district level, but I did set myself some goals and achieved them,” Ms Hands said. “Overall I was pleased with the way things went and to come home with the three titles was pretty awesome.”
She said she struggled in the more physical challenges of the regional final. “The exam and interview sections of the competition went well for me but other parts of the competition were extremely physical and I need to work on my fitness levels.” She said the competition is extremely addictive and is looking forward to giving it another crack next year. Meanwhile, Darfield High School dominated the TeenAg field, taking out first and third, with Christchurch Boys’ High School separating the two Darfield teams. The TeenAg regional finals involved competing in teams of two in eight different modules based on all aspects of the agriculture industry, which could include: animal anatomy, fencing, meat cut ID, gun safety, equine, agronomy, feed budgeting and chainsaw assembly. The winning Darfield High School team of Brooke McKay and Tom Welch will now head to the Manawatu in July for the TeenAg grand final, which will be held in conjunction with FMG Young

Farmer of the Year grand final. They will be joining Tasman Regional Final FMG Young Farmer of the Year winner, West Coast dairy farmer Andrew Wiffen, at the grand final event. The 29-year-old, who farms in partnership with his family near Hokitika, is one of three confirmed national finalists, with the four more regional finals to be held.
Second place went to Hurunui’s Sam Heaven, while Dunsandel Young Farmers Club member Robin Hornblow finished third. Hurunui’s Roscoe Taggart won the Agri-Sports Challenge with a fine display in the head-to-head fencing challenge. In the AgriKids regional competition, also held in Hokitika, the Tasman Tikes from North Loburn School came out on top to qualify for the national final.

We invite you to meet us in Italy on Saturday June 17th, when we will introduce you to our dear friend Marco and together visit some of the villages on the Cinque Terre – Marco’s home! His knowledge of the flora and fauna and the history of this unique terraced terrain, including the Portofino peninsula, is fascinating! Franco will serve us lunch at his quaint fish restaurant specialising in local cuisine, is lobster on the menu today? He will serve wine from the surrounding hills... all included in the cost of the itinerary of course! At a leisurely pace we return to our hotel, of 4 nights, with a beautiful garden sloping down to the Mediterranean Sea, for a swim and a ‘siesta’ as the Italians do!!! The scenery is breathtaking! Then 3 nights on Lake d’Orta; 3 nights at a tiny lakeside town on Lake Como; 2 nights in a beautiful villa overlooking Lake Garda.
ITALIAN OPERA. You may wish to continue with us to Verona for 4 nights including the best seats for the operas Nabucco, Aida and Rigoletto, plus a fun day cooking with locals on a beautiful country estate. Susan Williamson and John Percy (Italian Citizen) formed Etruscan Pleasures (Italia) Ltd 26 years ago. Etruscan Pleasures journeys to Italy including LIMITED SPACE on Sicily, the Italian Lakes & Cinque Terre; Italian Opera and Corsica & Sardinia. Our Itineraries are designed for 10 to 14 travellers.
Our regular clients choose to travel with us because “quality is better than quantity”!! They thank us for immersing them in the real culture that the average traveller would never see. The age group of our ‘discerning’ travellers is generally 40’s to mid 70’s, professional and like minded people – all wanting to experience something new, have fun, relax and travel hassle–free and at a gentle pace!

Special edition the best of two classics by Andy Bryenton
Toyota’s venerable Hilux has seen plenty of action through the years — from barnstorming advertising stunts with Barry Crump through to a test to destruction with the lads from the BBC’s Top Gear. But now there’s a new model that fuses the legendary tough image of the Hilux with another division of the massive auto-manufacturing force from Japan — their respected TRD racing development partners. The TRD branch has been around since the 1950s, and during that time it’s produced a fearsome array of katana-sharp racing machines and special editions. Think classics like the 2000GT, the Toyota 7 (the world’s first turbocharged race car) and the special edition Celicas, MR2s and Supras which have become motoring legends. This is the crew who have been picked to fettle and tune the image and performance of the 2017 TRD Hilux. Starting with a standard SR5 Hilux, the TRD division has added touches of aesthetic brutality such as massive rims and Maxxis off-road tyres to put down 420Nm of torque. Distinctive TRD badging and design cues make the standard Hilux exude menace and
presence, while it’s prepped for the rough stuff with matt black nudge bars and a sport back bar ready to rack up the spotlights. Under the hood the TRD team has not opted to swap out the engine for a big Lexus derived six or eight — instead you’ll find a Land Cruiser tried and tested turbo-charged diesel. This 2.8L four-cylinder, 16-valve mill provides ample power, and in this case the Racing Development team is not aiming at Suzuka or the Nurburgring, but at back roads and gravel. The run of TRD edition Hilux utes is strictly limited, so for those who wish to grab a piece of what may very well become auto history, time is running out. Demand was high for this model when it debuted at Fieldays in 2016, and now that it’s here the 100 examples on offer are being snapped up. Need more convincing? Remember that a 1996 Supra touched with TRD magic will still cost you more that $30,000 today.
Big boost — the popular Hilux ute is about to receive a shot in the arm with a TRD makeover

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET
Toward a fully automated future by Andy Bryenton
The home of the future — which was already supposed to have arrived, according to mid-20thcentury science magazines — was to have been a fully automated paradise, where robots catered to our every need, from washing the dishes to walking the dog. And while robotic lawn mowers and vacuum cleaners are here, the rest seems to have been delayed, like the hover car. On the farm, however, technology innovator Lely has pushed the clock forward. For several years now the European farm machinery company has been in the business of creating fully automated milking systems — robotic dairy hands for the 21st century. These machines don’t look like a metallic humanoid with a pair of buckets, though. Each Lely ‘Astronaut’ automatic milking unit takes the form of a red and silver booth, just the right size for a dairy cow. And there’s the key to their efficiency — it’s not the automatic arm which attaches the cups, or the monitoring equipment which can accurately track each individual cow’s health. It’s the fact that a battery of Astronaut units mean the cows themselves set the schedule. Being milked on their own timetable understandably makes the herd happy, and happy cows are more productive. But Lely’s good ideas don’t end there. With individual cows being analysed one at a time, it’s possible to ensure milk quality down through a range of

variables, detect mastitis and deal with it early, and even improve the efficiency of artificial insemination programmes. The robotic system acts not just as a milking machine, but also gives each cow a health check every time they come to the shed. Information is fired across the net to a mobile app for the farmer’s convenience. Lely has brought this technology to fruition already, and there are farms in
New Zealand that have made the switch successfully. With options to fine tune the system for better yield, improved herd health, feed cost reductions and more, this may very well be the way all dairy farms are run in decades to come. Those who have converted say that the initial investment cost is soon recouped, and Lely provides comprehensive training and post-installation care to get the most out of each robot.

Farm security is a snap
around road works
It used to be the case that far-flung rural areas were renowned for being free of crime and theft. Being a long way from the big city with its perceived villainy was a good reason for local pride — in a time when doors were never locked and the keys stayed in the ute at night.
Experienced Builder
It’s sad but true that times have changed, and now farms are often at the front line of the security ‘arms race’ between sneak thieves and those who work hard for their money. Fuel supplies, quad bikes and even the contents of the homestead have been brazenly targeted by criminals, but technology is allowing rural folk to fight back with devices unheard of in previous years — at least outside of spy blockbusters. A popular choice on the shelves of many electrical stores is the Arlo wireless camera kit — a collection of four small cigarette pack sized camera modules and a single central hub or ‘base station’. The cameras are wireless with long life internal batteries, weatherproof to put up with showers of rain, and record information to a remote ‘cloud’ on the internet. Snap them to their special dome-shaped fittings to cover any area of the home, and they even come with light amplifying night vision to help capture movement in the dark. Users can set the cameras to pop into life when they detect movement, or alternatively they can be controlled
remotely from any cellular device. This means that anywhere you are in the world, the farm can be watched and kept secure. Picture this — an alert comes late at night while you’re out at dinner. A shadowy figure is trying to access the equipment shed. Snap to highresolution night vision, and suddenly you have a clear view of the burglar’s face in real time. This image can be sent right to the police force for a quick ‘pickup’ — or used later Caught in the act — burglars are less likely to target homes with visible or signposted camera systems as evidence to track down wrongdoers. Then again, as some almost everyone has broadband and Arlo camera models have a speaker and a mobile device, the kind of security microphone, you could also simply tell systems which were once the preserve the hapless thief that he’s on film. of prisons, banks and gold reserves are That could cause any would be robber now available over the counter. See your to head for the hills! In an age when local electrical store to find out more.

A TRANSPARENT AND ENJOYABLE BUILDING EXPERIENCE When you build with Reynolds Construction you know you are dealing directly with the owner of the company who will be building your home, which director Craig Reynolds says gives clients a distinct advantage over building with some of the larger group building companies. “When you build with us you’re not dealing with a salesperson, you’re dealing with a qualified manager who will actually be doing the work. You know you’re going to get an honest answer not a sales pitch,” he says. Another advantage of building with an owner/ operator company is that the client is not paying for any large overheads. Craig says this enables Reynolds Construction to easily compete on price with the larger group building companies. “Our work comes from word of mouth and recommendations from satisfied clients,” he says Reynolds Construction has been building new homes, and renovating and extending existing homes, throughout Canterbury for more than 10 years. Craig has 30 years industry experience, completing his apprenticeship with his father here in Canterbury. He went into business for himself at the age of 20. He heads a team of qualified and experienced tradesmen, who are known for their high level of workmanship. “Plus they’re all good guys,” says Craig. “They’re approachable, friendly as well as experienced and versatile tradesmen.”
They build a full range of homes, from the more modest up to high-end architecturally-designed homes. Craig works with many of Christchurch’s leading architects and has built over 300 homes in and around the region. Reynolds Construction will price clients’ own plans. They will also arrange architectural plans to be designed and consented ready for commencement. Renovations and extensions are another speciality at Reynolds Construction. They work on homes of all description, from older character homes to modern houses, building and renovating in a style that meets the client’s requirements and is sympathetic to the style of the home. Reynolds Construction is also one of the last companies involved with the EQC repair programme having completed over 200 repairs including multi unit projects.
Clients are kept fully informed throughout the building process. Reynolds will monitor the build continuously with a range of quality control check lists as the project develops.
“Our motto is making your building experience and enjoyable one and that is what we aim to do,” - Craig Reynolds Craig and his team take great pride in their work and realize the trust that the client invests with them. “There’s nothing anonymous about Reynolds Construction.”
Craig says the variety of projects they have worked on over the years have been extensive and diverse. “It all depends on what comes in over the phone and whatever it is, we can do it.” The team have also worked on numerous education projects, building classrooms, additions and extensions for schools throughout Canterbury. Home and land packages are also available at Reynolds Construction. They will manage the build from start to completion, including the design process, which Craig says makes building a stressfree process for the client.
