The park was developed by Environment Canterbury with support from Selwyn District Council, while the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association was also one of the key partners. “It’s really cool to come to a project where it’s not just about one group of people doing something for the members of that one group.” James Page, team leader parks and forests for Environment Canterbury, echoed Broughton’s thoughts. “This park is a good example, and a case study really, of what can be achieved if multiple agencies work together with the private sector, as well,” Page said. p James Page, team leader parks and forests for Environment Canterbury, Selwyn mayor Sam Broughton, and Environment Canterbury regional park ranger Greg Stanley officially open The Willows Despite the overcast weather, more than 100 people attended the trail. Daddy and Daughter Time The Selwyn District Council is offering the opportunity for local dads to bond with their daughters but in an unconventional manner. They are going to show dads how to do their daughter’s hair. It is the idea of the council’s district programme and learning coordinator Trudi Fraser. Bags to be binned Change is coming for kerbside recycling collection in Selwyn, with plastic bags given the bin.

p Declining use of plastic bags prompts change

From Monday, July 1, plastic shopping bags will need to go in the red bin — rather than the yellow kerbside recycling bin. Solid Waste manager Andrew Boyd said the decision is a result of the falling number of bags, following the decision by major supermarkets and the government to phase them out. According to Getaway Magazine, New Zealand will join seven other countries committed to a full or partial ban on plastics. According to the magazine, Rwanda has the right to be called the world’s first completely plastic-free nation, 10 years after introducing a ban on all plastic

bags and plastic packaging, in 2008. Moreover, there are some heavyweight measures taken if caught in Rwanda with plastic. A jail sentence for up to six months is possible, and on entering a border vehicles are searched and any plastic bags or packaging confiscated. In Selwyn, there are less draconian measures. The number of plastic bags going into bins in Selwyn has still been falling since the start of the year, Mr Boyd said, matching the change around the country. Plastics that are marked as compostable or biodegradable also need to be put into the red bin or composted at home. ¢

p The 100-strong Lincoln Scout Group prepares for their participation in the 2019 Anzac Day services

They will even arrange pickups. The group’s secretary Sandra Poff said they were looking for quality items that the new owners would be proud to own. That included donations of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, and accessories such as shoes, bags, scarves and jewellery. Undergarments wouldn’t be accepted. All proceeds from the sale would help representatives of the 100-strong group attend the 22nd New Zealand Scout Jamboree at Mystery Creek, Poff said. The Lincoln Scout Group is one of the largest in the Port Hills zone and, as Selwyn grows so does the demand for the group’s services. “As well as providing challenging activities that

develop personal and practical skills, we also provide an environment for our youth members and their families/ whanau to develop friendships or get to know people in their community; something that is becoming increasingly important as the population of Lincoln and surrounding areas are growing rapidly,” Poff said. “Community service and learning about our community also forms a large part of our programme, and we are proud to support and enhance our community where needed.” To donate to the clothing sale, drop off items at 32 Prebblewood Drive, Prebbleton, or contact Sandra Poff secretary@lincolnscouts.org.nz to arrange pickups. ¢

The foundation has delivered the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award at the CMP Youth Unit for the past threeyears with outstanding success. They have worked with 41 participants; thirtynine have achieved awards. This month two gold awards, two silver awards and six bronze awards were presented. The award winners participated in a sponsored triathlon that raised $200 for Te Whare Hauora, Christchurch Women’s Refuge. They also created community gardens gifting produce and plants to the more vulnerable people in the community. The awards were presented by Christchurch City councillor Anne Galloway, who said she felt privileged and honoured to speak and present certificates to the recipients. “It is a huge accomplishment for anybody to meet all that is required to

achieve these awards, but when you add in the particular challenges that the prison environment presents, I am astonished by what these young men have done.” Joshua Foundation founder Chris Allan said the foundation had developed and adapted their programmes to support young men within Corrections’ CMP Youth Unit. “The goal was to Engage; Relate and Connect with these young men and provide them with the tools to empower them to make personal change; view the world through a different lens and recognise their intrinsic value to the community,” he said. In 2018, Joshua Foundation created history by having the first young person in the country receive a Gold DOEIA Award from within Corrections; now they have two more. ¢

Mayor welcomes bill u by Mike Isle

Selwyn’s mayor Sam Broughton is welcoming changes to the Local Government Act, which puts into law councils’ responsibility to lift the wellbeing of their communities. The Local Government (Community Wellbeing) Amendment bill passed its third and final reading in parliament last week. It restates and affirms into the Local Government Act the four aspects of wellbeing: social, economic, environmental and cultural. The bill requires local government to promote the social, economic, environmental, and cultural wellbeing of communities and restores territorial authorities’ power to collect development contributions for any public amenities needed as a consequence of development. Mayor Broughton said he is delighted to see the government recognise the importance of wellbeing, particularly with its local focus. “Our country is far too centralised with

an out-of-balance power structure focussed in Wellington that is unable to be flexible to local needs and opportunities. New Zealand-wide solutions to Auckland problems don’t often fit our Canterbury situation, and I imagine the opposite is also true. “Our council has always known this and provided facilities and events that promote wellbeing. We will continue to do this and welcome the government to join us into the future. “The government needs to look at other ways that local government can be empowered to better serve our communities with fit for purpose, cost-effective and local solutions,” Broughton said. The bill now goes to the GovernorGeneral for royal assent before being passed into law.

The Selwyn District Council has agreed to trial Lime Scooters in Rolleston once safety concerns and other issues have been addressed. Rolleston will become the first rural town in New Zealand to have the scooters after the council voted at its meeting this week to approve a sixmonth trial. Planting for memories u by Mike Isle

The Kirwee Recreation Reserve Management Committee is paying tribute to a large community turnout for what it describes as a highly successful plant-out at the reserve on Friday and Saturday.

p Students from Kirwee Model School were on hand to help

Committee chair Raewyn Feast said a highlight was the arrival of children from the Kirwee Model School along with their parents and teachers. They joined Te Ara Kakariki, Selwyn council staff and reserve management committee planting trees and shrubs to beautify the reserve. “All set to work, busy and focussed on their task. Lots of chatter and laughter,” Feast said. “By the end of the morning, they had successfully planted out the northern boundary of the new extension of the reserve. “We appreciate the children’s efforts and hope they will look back on this day with long-lasting fond memories.”

Saturday followed with several residents from the community arriving with garden spades planting the rest of the trees and shrubs. A huge effort by everyone. Feast said the reserve management committee wants to thank all those involved including staff from the council, Te Ara Kakariki, residents of Kirwee and finally the children and teachers from the Kirwee Model School. “Of special mention is a thank you to reserve committee member Tony Armstrong who coordinated these successful plant-out days with Selwyn Council, Te Ara Kakariki, the school, and Southern Woods.” ¢

The flu is seen by many as a winter nuisance; an illness that can make the colder months a drag, but is ultimately only as fearsome as a headache or a stomach bug, not long ago, influenza was deadlier than warfare. It’s true. One hundred years ago, the battles of the first world war killed fewer people than the strain of influenza, which came about at the same time. Then again, people in those days did not have the scientific weapons we use to fight back. Today, modern vaccines are formulated each year to combat the strains of flu which the World Health Organisation tracks and monitors. This year, these include strains of H1N1 and H2N2, that have caused problems in the past. You can’t catch the flu from a flu shot, as it contains only a ‘dead’ or inert replica of the virus. Your body’s immune system can use this to identify the real thing, in the same way as soldiers train with painted targets on the firing range. An imitation sharpens up your natural

Pets & Equine ADVERTORIAL

Improving older pets’ health At this time of year, as the days get shorter and nights colder, many owners of older pets ask; what can I do to help make my dog or cat more comfortable? The three most important ways we can help an older pet is to reduce arthritic pain, correct dental disease and make sure they are on a diet that is appropriate for their age and health status. The first most apparent symptom of age is osteoarthritis. In dogs, this is very easy to recognise as usually, they are slow to get up or limp in one leg. In cats its a bit more subtle and shows a reluctance to jump down off the bed or jump up onto the couch. Animals that have had a previous injury, are overweight or have

poorly formed joints are more prone to arthritis. The most dramatic improvements we can make are with anti-inflammatory medication. That can be in the form of a liquid or tablets and is also available in a monthly tablet dose called Trocoxil. Owners are often surprised at the dramatic improvement in the amount of energy and playfulness of their pets. Other helpful options are weight loss if they are overweight, special joint diets which reduce inflammation and help cartilage in joints recover, supplements for arthritis, warm, soft

bedding and regular exercise. The second dramatic change we can help with is ensuring your old pet has a pain-free mouth. Many older animals have dental disease, often involving loose or rotten teeth. These have to be extremely sore before your pet will stop eating. Modern anaesthetic drugs and dental equipment allow veterinarians to safely remove decayed teeth and scale and clean remaining teeth to let your pet to eat in comfort. The third way you can help your pet is ensuring they are on the correct diet. Like humans, pets health can be determined directly by the quality of their diet. Dogs and cats start ageing from six to eight years old so the diet you had your two-yearold dog on may not be appropriate for your 10-year-old dog. Some older animals need

higher quality more digestible ingredients, supplements for arthritis, lower phosphate levels to protect their kidneys, higher levels of fish oil and turmeric extract for their joints and lower or higher energy content to allow for weight gain or weight loss. Good quality biscuits are more digestible than raw foods because correct processing allows more nutrients to be available to your pet. At Vetent Darfield, our friendly team of vets and nurses offer free weighing and diet advice and free dental checks. We are well equipped with in-house blood testing and digital X-ray. Ask about our Petfirst Care Plan, our discounted Chronic Care Plan and pet insurance options. Like their owners, pets are living longer, and there are many ways we now have to allow a healthier happier life for your favourite friend.

Rakaia Ploughing Association president John Davison said that it was an excellent event with a host of great skills on display, attracting a big crowd from town and country. He paid tribute to a “great” organising committee. “I worked with a wonderful

Dairy Industry’s best Canterbury’s Matt Redmond became the 2019 New Zealand Dairy Manager of the Year, whilst Nicola Blowey, also from Canterbury won the 2019 New Zealand Dairy Trainee of the Year at the 2019 National New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards last Saturday. Matt is the farm manager on Craigmore’s Pahau Flats Dairy Ltd — Landsend 232ha, 830-cow property at Culverden. He also won the PrimaryITO Power Play and the Westpac Personal Planning and Financial Management merit awards. Judge Malcolm Scott from Westpac says Matt concentrates on all aspects of the farm, but his financial capability and thorough understanding of his finances really set him apart. “Matt is goal-focussed and knowledgeable. He is not willing to just sit still; he wants to continually challenge himself to learn and grow. He has strong support from his wife Mel. He doesn’t just have business focus; he has life focus.” Judges described Nicola Blowey as a confident, mature and compelling young woman. “She has a mature outlook, and her communication skills were exceptional,”

Flowers for generations

BE THE SOBER D FOR a NIGHT

u by Ann van Engelen

Michelle and Ian Kempthorne at K&L Nurseries are the fifth generation of the Loader family to be working in the flower growing business. Michelle’s great great grandfather began growing freesias and table grapes in the early 1900s and now along with her parents Paul and Lyn, Michelle and her husband Ian specialise in producing gerberas and roses. “They are in the top three flowers for cut flowers florists and wholesalers need. Lillies are the third popular choice,” says Michelle. “Our gerbera house is full of colour at present. We grow 70 varieties, and there are all sorts of new funky ones. One of the hottest is a Pastini Venezia, which is a mini gerbera shaped like a pasta swirl. “We work seven days a week and are under a lot of pressure from imported flowers. “To help overcome this and gain a point of difference we have planted some varieties that are unique to us.” The family were the first growers in the country to go from coal to wood using high tech Polytechnik Biomass boiler for heating in the growing houses. “We won sections in the Ballance Farm and Environmental awards for this changeover. K&L Nurseries produces more than two million stems of cut flowers a year and produce more than 70 per cent of the South Island’s supply of Gerberas. “We sell through wholesale auction houses and distribute them to retail
