 The well has run dry on the West Melton Millennium drinking fountain but Peter Stafford plans on springing it back to life in time for the town’s 150 year celebrations over Labour Weekend

The fountain which was blessed and declared open at a ceremony on January 1 2000 was funded by local Christian people as a way to mark the two thousandth year since the birth of Christ. “It was built by people of faith as a way of celebrating Christ’s birth and saying it’s alive, it’s real, it’s relevant,” Mr Stafford said. While the fountain watered the people of West Melton for around seven years Mr Stafford said it has since fallen into disrepair, largely due to vandalism.

Now he is seeking ideas and support from the community about relocating and repairing the fountain. “I want it to be used and functional. It should be able to be moved in one piece,” he said. The structure made from river stone from the Waimakariri and granite sourced from Christchurch was fixed onto a pre-stressed concrete pad. It was placed on private land which has since changed hands, on the corner of Weedons Ross and West Melton roads.

PROVIDING WATER SUPPLY SOLUTIONS TO THE CANTERBURY REGION FOR OVER 25 YEARS

At a public meeting on Monday evening it was decided to take a proposal to the West Melton Resident’s Association (WMRA) suggesting the association take ownership of the restoration project and ongoing maintenance. This would include investigating a possible new site for the fountain. The next WMRA meeting is on Wednesday June 11 at 7.30pm at the West Melton Community Centre and Mr Stafford encourages those interested in the project to come and have their say. 

A group of Darfield High School students are raising funds and awareness of the plight of those living in poverty around the world by fun and thought provoking events.

They hold a photo of their sponsored child from Tanzania who they are raising money for. From left: Ben Ridgen, Cameron Brookes, Erika Pander, Izzi Nash and Chevvy Roberts

DHS World Vision staff member Sheryl Watson said one event is the 40 Hour Famine, held later this month, where student are encouraged to choose their own way of experiencing poverty and deprivation while raising funds through sponsorship. “Some students have chosen to live in cardboard boxes for 40 hours. Some are giving up using their cell phones for that time,” Sheryl said. A member of the DHS World Vision group Chevvy Roberts recently spent time among the poor in Papua New Guinea. “It was a real eye opener. You see things like that on TV but its way different in real life. It taught me a brand new way of living,” Chevvy said.

Chevvy said he was shocked at the lack of material possessions the young people had. “I made lots of friends and really bonded with them. They only had two sets of clothes so I gave them some of mine. I got back and I just had the clothes I was in. I gave all the rest away.” The group have a sponsored child from Tanzania whose name is Immanual. Some of the proceeds of their fundraising goes to him. Other World Vision events, such as the 40 Hour Famine raise money for specific countries. This year’s country is Malawi where 65% of childhood illnesses and deaths are caused by malnutrition. 

Central Plains Water Ltd has repaid its loans to the Selwyn District Council. Council provided a total of $5.84 million in loans to assist the CPW scheme. All loans have now been repaid with interest of $1.21 million bringing the repayment sum the council received to $7.05 million. Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe said the loans were made by the council as the scheme will provide a significant boost to the Selwyn economy and help to create more jobs and prosperity. “The scheme will also help to relieve the pressure on the demand for groundwater for irrigation in Selwyn, thus improving flows in lowland streams,” he said. The CPW scheme concept was

first developed in a joint study commissioned by Selwyn District Council and Christchurch City Council in 2000 and will ultimately see around 60,000 hectares of the Selwyn district irrigated between the Waimakariri and Rakaia rivers. Construction of the scheme officially began last week with Prime Minister John Key and Doug Catherwood, the chairman of Central Plains Water, turning the first sod. The scheme will be developed in three stages. The first stage of construction covers around 20,000 hectares between the Rakaia and Hororata rivers and is expected to be completed by September 2015. 

On the other hand, as an independent contractor you will not covered by the ERA and aren’t entitled to paid leave. You’ll also need to pay particular attention to what’s in your contract, because this document specifies what’s expected of you and what you can expect from the organisation you’ll be providing services to. Colin Watson is rather attached to the beard he first grew in the original 1971 West Melton beard growing competition held to mark the local school’s jubilee.

 To shave or not to shave, that is the questions for West Melton resident Colin Watson who first grew his beard for the original West Melton beard growing competition in 1971. Colin comes from a line of beard growing West Melton men, including his great-grandfather John Hill (top left photo in book) and grandfather George Watson (top right book photo)

Now he is toying with the idea of going clean shaven, if only for a short time, in order to reclaim his title for the second West Melton beard growing competition held this year as part of the community’s 150 year celebrations. The first competition saw Colin win the most colourful beard category for his then blond beard with ginger highlights. “It was a bit of fun. There were quite a few categories. I think the prize was something small like a chocolate fish,” Colin said. Although during the 1971 competition his newly formed facial hair had the disadvantage of having an ageing effect (someone thinking he was his father’s brother) Colin has only shaved his beard off once since that time. His clean shaven face did not last long as he soon realised how cold it was doing farm work without the benefit of facial protection from the elements. Colin’s family has a long history of residence in the West Melton area, with

Familiar face, new job

7

 by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Carey-Anne Hamilton has been appointed as the new principal of Greendale Primary School after a term as acting principal. Prior to this she was teaching in the school’s junior room. The Record caught up with Ms Hamilton about her plans for the school’s future. What is your teaching/principal career to date? I’ve always lived and worked in the country. I initially taught at Ward and Seddon schools in Marlborough and also a small correspondence unit in the beautiful isolated Awatere Valley 20 minutes from Molesworth. This was awesome unique schooling where children came from the neighbouring farming stations to complete their individualised work sent from Wellington via email or post. Why did you apply for the principal’s job at Greendale? I was keen to further my career with a supportive, positive community and BOT in the loveliest part of the world. As principal what are some of your ideas for the school? We’ve already introduced ‘Houses’. Children compete in house sports at break times in any sport from unihoc to ripper rugby. We aim to compete in house singing and dancing through the colder winter months. I want to integrate ICT fully into the classrooms, develop our website and

begin blog spots and introduce parent information evenings. By including all staff as a ‘team’ I value everyone’s input. We share tasks, have our own responsibilities. This builds staff morale and worth. We will also work collaboratively with the Malvern Cluster of schools to do the best for our Malvern children. What are you most looking forward to about being the principal? Working together with our positive, hardworking, supportive staff leading the way to make Greendale the best school around where all children reach their potential. What do you do when you’re not being a principal? I like to spend time relaxing with my family, doing activities together like horse riding, mountain biking, playing tennis and tramping. For myself I enjoy hockey, yoga, catching up with friends and when time allows horse trekking and exploring new countrysides and competing in multisport events. 

In search of beauty  by Anna Dalzell

Beauty is subjective. One definition of beauty I found was as follows: ‘the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind’. In other words beauty is determined by how we feel about something, such as a piece of music, a flavour of food, the feel of a fabric, a smell, or a thought. We are pre-determined to be attracted to beauty. Child development experts have recorded a preference for beautiful faces early on. A study published in 2008 suggests that we are attracted to objects with good symmetry because this conveys genetic health, preferable for the continuation of a strong species. What does this mean for our emotional health? Our sense of contentment is directly related to our sense of control. If we focus constantly on things we can’t control we feel desperately unhappy. If we instead put our energies into things we actually have control over we feel more empowered. So, in order to feel contented with our appearance we must take satisfaction from influencing the things we do have control over. For example, we can work on our tidiness, presentation, deportment, language, fitness and lifestyle. We should not forget that beauty also comes from within, and then is displayed outwardly in how we present ourselves to the world.

West Melton

This is the area where we can exert the most influence. Beauty within is directly related to our values. When we feel we are being true to our values, we feel most at ease, and this shows on the outside. You will also be less worried about the judgement of others. So, avoid comparing yourself to others, instead concentrate on asking yourself what you can do to support what is important to you. If it’s important to you to look good, then work out what influence you realistically have over that and put some actions in place to make it happen. 

Research supports natural compounds for high cholesterol A clinical trial into tangerine and red palm extract is for me one of the most important studies into natural support for cardiovascular health. A study ‘Citrus Flavonoids and Tocotrienols for Hypercholesterolemia’ (high cholesterol) by Rosa, Xian-Lu and Guthrie, 2007 identified the cardiovascular benefits of a patented combination of these extracts. This was a high quality double-blind placebo controlled trial with the objective to see if these compounds had any effect on blood cholesterol and other heart risk factors. The study involved 120 people, otherwise healthy people, with high cholesterol. They were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 was given a tangerine flavone extract combined with the palm fruit extract Tocomin® and the other group a placebo (sugar pill). After 12 weeks all groups were given a blood test. The results showed that on average, those receiving the active ingredients reduced total cholesterol by 27%. This was reflected in a reduction of potentially dangerous LDL cholesterol by 25% with a small increase of beneficial HDL cholesterol of 4%. Triglycerides are the transported fat from excess calories and can lead to heart disease and these reduced by 31%. Many people have been prescribed cholesterol lowering medications called statins. These are very effective at reducing cholesterol as they inhibit the liver enzyme needed to create cholesterol. However this same enzyme is needed for critically important co enzyme Q10. By reducing CoQ10, statins can cause many side effects such as fatigue and muscle pain. I recommend most people on statins take CoQ10 as CoQsol® but please call me to see if this is right for you. There is a large group of people who cannot tolerate statins and another group who would prefer to use non-drug solutions to improve heart health. The compounds in the above trial are now available to the public Give me call if you would like more information. You’re just cooking dinner, or sitting down with a quiet cup of tea and the doorbell or phone interrupts you with someone trying to convince you their product or service is the best deal on offer. According to consumer.org.nz the first thing you should do when someone comes calling is ask them where they got your contact details from and why they think you would want what they’re offering. It’s a good idea to note down their answers. Ask for everything in writing, including details of the product or service offered and full contact details of the person and business you are dealing with. If they are contacting you by phone ask them to send the details in an email. Take time to look at the details you have been given. Ask yourself if the person or organisation is legitimate. Check to see if they are listed in the phonebook, and if not, why not. If they are listed as one name and trading as another, ask why. Another place to check is their website. Most businesses have them nowadays. See how much information is provided and if it is a New Zealand site or an overseas one. What is the street address and place of business? My Italian Kitchen: Making homemade pasta  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

One of my Italian friends Teresa, lent me a recipe book on the cooking of Italy recently. In it are wonderful traditional recipes from different regions. My Italian ancestors lived for some time in Naples, which is a city renowned for its pizza and pasta. I decided to make fresh pasta from the recipe in Teresa’s book. The secret to pasta I found was having the right 00 flour (00 stands for the grind of the flour, 00 being the finest) and the patience to knead the dough for a full 10 minutes, and setting it aside for another 10 minutes. By the time I came to rolling the dough out it held together well and I had no problem rolling it. Once the dough is rolled up, like making pin-wheel scones, it is cut into 1cm strips then unravelled to reveal the fettuccine ribbons. When I placed the fettuccine in the boiling water it held together perfectly and within a few minutes took on the slightly rubbery consistency of fresh cooked pasta. I sampled a little to test if it was ready and it was perfetto. It was one of my finest culinary moments.

Ingredients 1¼ cups 00 flour (this is available from selected Christchurch markets and may also be called Italian flour) 1 egg 1 additional egg white 2½ teaspoons olive oil 1 teaspoon salt A few drops of water Method 1. Pile the flour into a mountain shape on the kitchen bench and shape a well in the middle. Put the egg, egg white, olive oil and salt in the well 2. Scoop the flour from the outside and begin to knead the mixture to form a dough 3. Add a few drops of water if the dough is too dry. Knead for at least 10 minutes. The dough will become smooth, shiny, and like elastic 4. Wrap the dough in grease proofed
