Five generations of the Oakley family …

Thirteen-year-old Manaia Davies from Glentunnel has been handpicked by JLo’s (Jennifer Lopez) choreographer Kiel Tutin to represent New Zealand in the Body Rock dance competition in San Diego in June. Manaia said the competition is often called the ‘Super Bowl’ of dance. “I am honoured to be a part of a select crew of juniors from New Zealand

competing at this event,” she said. “Training is every weekend in Auckland, which has its own challenges coming from a small town in central Canterbury.” It is not just the competition she is looking forward to but also the opportunity to learn new teaching skills as she is passionate about passing on her love for hip-hop to others. “After the competition, I will be

attending workshops held by top world choreographers in Los Angeles to further develop my skills and bring them back to my students who I teach on a regular basis.” Manaia only found out about her inclusion in the dance competition early this month and needs to raise around $7,000 to fund the trip, which begins in late June. continued on page 3 …

p The Move it to Music classes include a range of physical and social benefits

The class is aimed at those with arthritis or the less active who want to ‘use it not lose it’. Instructor Jan McKay, who has been running similar classes for nearly 20 years, said along with all of the physical benefits, the sessions create a social environment where many friendships are made. She said she enjoys seeing the benefits that they have for attendees, both physically and socially. “We get people coming along with a range of different health and mobility issues. The class allows them to get

their bodies moving in a safe, accepting environment. We focus on balance, stretching and increasing movement and mobility in joints. Classes begin with a warm-up, then move into a bit of ‘huff and puff’ before ending stretch and relax movements. “The classes are always full of fun and laughs. I encourage everyone to sing along to the music with me.” The Move it to Music class is held on Wednesdays from 1.15pm to 2.15pm at the Rolleston Community Centre and costs $3 per session. Finishing touches for new station u by Kent Caddick

West Melton firefighters will be in good shape for next summer with the final touches being put on their new fire station.

p The old West Melton fire station is torn down with the new station at rear

Last week the old station was demolished opening up the way for the new station to become operational. The West Melton brigade is now part of the new Fire and Emergency New Zealand organisation, which was formed when the National Rural Fire Authority under which it operated merged with the New Zealand Fire Service last year. Deputy fire force controller, Chris Caldwell, said prior to the merger they were funded and managed by the Selwyn District Council. “It was decided a few years ago we needed a new station as we had acquired a second truck and a ute and had nowhere to put them. “The existing station was built around 1965 and had developed a lot of problems, leaking, birds getting in and barely big enough for the main truck. “The council agreed to fund a new station, and just over two years ago we started progressing plans for the new one.” However, before the build started the FENZ merger occurred. “Selwyn council agreed to give the money they were going to spend on it to FENZ to keep the project going,” Mr Caldwell said. “We may not have been on the priority list under the new FENZ to have our station upgraded — there are plenty of others in the same or worse state

around the country. We really do give credit to the SDC particularly Douglas Marshall for this as without them it wouldn’t have happened.” He said the new station’s basic design was largely from input from all the crew after they visited several other new stations and got ideas. “Some of it is standard NZFS spec, some of it we have modified and tweaked and dare I say it improved on other designs. “We will have a huge engine bay, capable of storing not just our three vehicles but at least one other should FENZ decide to expand West Melton’s capabilities. “The training room is large and together with a decent kitchen and office and equipment store. It could be multi-use, such as a civil defence base in a non-fire disaster, or simply as an Incident Control Point if a major incident occurred in West Melton.” Now the old station has been demolished work has begun on the front of the new station to improve access to the replacement building and provide a large working area. The old building was 100m2, and the new building is 380m2. Construction of the new building started in January this year and once the finishing touches are made will be fully operational in June. ¢

Hip-hop dreams She is holding a number of events around Selwyn to raise the funds needed for the trip and has also started a Givealittle page to help out. “With such a short timeframe to fundraise for this event, we appreciate any donation to help with my journey. “Thank you to those who have kindly contributed to making dreams come true and turning them into reality.” She said the funds will be spent on flights, accommodation, costumes, choreographers’ fees and workshops. So far she has raised $1,300 through the page. To donate go to: givealittle.co.nz/cause/dancing-onthe-world-stage. Manaia’s love for dancing began at just three years old, and initially, she was drawn to the more traditional forms such as ballet. The family were living in Australia at the time and at the age of five Manaia was accepted into the Cutting Edge Dance Studio where she was introduced to other forms of dance. When she was nine, the family moved back to New Zealand and settled in Glentunnel to be near family. “I got back into dancing with jazz and contemporary, but I found that I had a love and passion for hip-hop dancing,” Manaia said. “So I scratched the other forms of dancing to focus on hip-hop, and I have been doing that ever since.” She said her involvement with the other forms of dancing has been

very helpful in developing her hip-hop style. Manaia is dedicated to her craft, choosing to go to Burnside High School in Christchurch to take advantage of the arts programme the school offers, which means travelling to the city every day to go to school, a trip which takes around an hour each way. “It’s a great environment to be in at Burnside as there are many like-minded people who understand where I come from and where I want to go.” 

More flow for skate park The redesigned Lincoln Domain Skate Park will suit younger skaters and scooter riders. That’s according to experienced skate park designer, Dave North, who was chosen by the Selwyn District Council to review the incomplete skate park and make it more suitable for beginner to intermediate skaters and scooter riders. The park was expected to be completed earlier this year; however, council staff decided to tweak the skate park design as it was deemed to be unsuitable for younger people. “The changes that we’ve made to the skate park design will ensure flow,” Mr North said. “A small learners bowl will lead on to an intermediate bowl, which will have lots of different carve lines as well as air and transfer lines. “The street features will include both large and small hubba, ledges and rails. Everything will be set up to allow skaters and scooter riders to rapidly progress and learn.” Changes to the skate park’s design were also influenced by discussions with local skaters and skate park designers.

AT ST. PAULS

Council’s property and commercial manager, Douglas Marshall, said he was pleased with the new design. “We have made the skate park a bit bigger, and with Dave’s help, we’ve ensured the park achieves its initial goal of being a quality facility where young skaters and scooter riders can learn and have fun,” Mr Marshall said. “We understand that locals have had to be really patient while we get the skate park right; however, we’re confident that the new design hits the mark. “The council took the opportunity to extend the entire Lincoln Domain playground area, not just the skate park, to make more room for everyone who uses the facility.” The new skate park is expected to be completed by the end of June, depending on the weather. The Lincoln Reserve Playground is now closed and will be relocated to the other side of the pedestrian path to provide more room to extend the skate park. The playground is expected to be reopened in June.

It was a double celebration for Darfield High School this month when the school officially opened its two new classroom blocks.

p Mayor Sam Broughton (front row right) joins Darfield High School principal James Morris (front left), staff, school trustees and contractors for the opening of the new classroom block

J Block, which is the new home for year seven students, was opened by long-serving staff member, and student administrator, Jill Hill. F Block, home to social sciences, was opened by Selwyn District Mayor, Sam Broughton. Speaking after the opening ceremony school principal, James Morris, said the classrooms would make for a positive learning environment. “The classrooms are well-designed, modern learning spaces, with good light, acoustics, airflow and visibility,” he said. “For most of the spaces, we have chosen to use single classroom spaces that open out through sliding doors into a shared, multi-use, space, alongside teacher workspaces and meeting

rooms. All classrooms also have good connection to the outdoor environment.” Mr Morris said the built-in flexibility of the classrooms would serve the school well into the future. “We have designed the classrooms so that classes can work within a traditional classroom space when this best suits the learning or break out into other spaces when this is needed. “The flexibility should serve the school into the future as needs change,” Mr Morris said. Mr Morris thanked Mayor Broughton, guests, staff and students for attending the openings, and thanked and acknowledged Pastor Paul Cossey of the Darfield Baptist Church for blessing the buildings. ¢

Sister City fellowship to China Mudfish protection in Selwyn Selwyn residents are being offered the opportunity to join delegates from around 20 different countries later this year to learn about Chinese culture, people, food and history. Each year, the Selwyn Sister City committee sends a local representative to Gansu in northwest China, for a month-long exchange. This year, the fellowship exchange runs from September 1 to 30 in Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu, and is funded by the Gansu Provincial People’s Government of China. Past Selwyn fellows have come from backgrounds in agriculture and exporting and local government. Last year’s fellow, Phillip Millar, said the experience was a great opportunity to learn more about the region of Gansu and to see some amazing sights. “A highlight for me was definitely exploring the city of Lanzhou, which runs along the beautiful Yellow River and visiting the rainbow-coloured mountains in Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park,” Mr Millar said. “I also loved visiting the Crescent Lake and sand dunes in Dunhuang. I had never seen anything like these amazing landforms before, and my appreciation for the beautiful landscapes of China was increased markedly.” Gansu Province is on the Silk Road and close to the Gobi Desert. Environment Canterbury, Department of Conservation and local landowners around Haldon Pasture Springs in the Selwyn district met with American hydrological engineer, Jason Kent, recently to begin mapping out and planning the logistics of the estimated $120,000 project. Environment Canterbury biodiversity officer, Johannes Welsch, said the pilot project could be a significant step forward in native fish conservation at sites threatened by trout. “This is a unique opportunity to showcase how biodiversity, species protection and agriculture can work together — delivering sustainable farming and conservation in the diverse agricultural landscape of Canterbury,”

Mr Welsch said. The Canterbury mudfish protection project will utilise an approximate six to seven-metrelong canvas array covering the full stream bed, which will send out electric pulses discouraging trout and eel from swimming upstream into the tributaries but rather continue up the mainstem of the Hororata River away from important mudfish populations. The Selwyn Waihora catchment has the largest remaining fragments of Canterbury mudfish of any other zone in the Canterbury region. The Haldon Pasture Springs site is particularly significant as it is one of only a few, where mudfish in the Hororata catchment managed to survive during the 2015–16 drought. ¢

Greenpark dominates Lincoln u by Kent Caddick

Greenpark A has opened up a three-point lead at the top of the Selwyn senior netball competition after handing defending champions Lincoln its second loss of the season on Saturday. For the first half of the match the young Lincoln side was able to keep in touch with the undefeated Greenpark A team, but as the match wore on Greenpark took control to run out 64– 57 winners. Broadfield, which had beaten Lincoln earlier in the season, is now three points behind the competition leaders after being made to work hard for the points against Greenpark B at the Lincoln Events Centre on Saturday. Greenpark B was in the game for most of the match, but some aggressive defence from Broadfield was matched by its accuracy in the shooting circle,

and at the final whistle, it emerged the winner, 51–45. In the other match of the round Southbridge A recorded its first win of the season with a 76–17 thumping of West Melton. In the Premier B division, Southbridge B went three points clear with a narrow 36–32 win over Rolleston, which like Southbridge had been undefeated prior to the weekend’s action. Lincoln B held on to third spot with a comprehensive 42–34 win over Burnham and Broadfield B was too good for Halswell, running out 54– 29 winners. ¢

THE RECORD

by Jill Dickie Five generations of the Oakley family have successfully farmed and grown vegetables in Canterbury and the current managing director, Robin Oakley, is taking the business forward with a focus on potatoes, beetroot, pumpkin, and broccoli.

F

rom a start with great-greatgrandfather John Oakley, then great-grandfather William Oakley, they were originally on a 20 acre farm. William went on to farm 50 acres, growing potatoes commercially with oats and wheat before his retirement. Grandfather Walter Oakley farmed with his father until 26 years of age then bought his first farm at Hororata. He also leased land from neighbouring farms to grow potatoes, before purchasing land to farm with his wife, Rose. Graeme Oakley, son of Walter and Rose, bought the first titles of the Halkett Farm and fully irrigated it to enhance production. He worked together

with his father on the Hororata and Halkett farms diversifying into barley, fodder, beet, seed potatoes and red clover for hay. Graeme worked the Halkett farm with his wife Dorothy until retiring in 2010 and still lives on the original property providing a valuable source of knowledge and support for son Robin. From an early age, Robin had a keen interest in growing vegetables, winning awards at his local school. His father offered him the opportunity to use one of the farm paddocks to grow vegetables commercially and sell via phone orders. By the age of 15, he was growing certified seed potatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, sweet corn and pumpkin and

He left school to work on the family farm and to pursue his vegetable growing interests. At this time there was no specialised machinery for any of the new vegetable crops, so all work was done by hand, though he was able to use his father’s machinery in exchange for labour on his potato farm. By 1985 he was leasing approximately 15 acres

from his father and growing cauliflower and cabbage for winter production, as well as pumpkin, sweet corn and seed potatoes. There are now 350 hectares of land under production providing a year-round supply of beetroot and broccoli, autumn harvested pumpkins, and gourmet and all-purpose potatoes. The business supports 20 permanent staff, and 15 people are employed part-time.

Young potatoes growing with the aid of an irrigator The business not only promotes buying fresh but also how to store vegetables appropriately after purchase and even offer recipes through their website oakleys.co.nz. Robin has a deep involvement in various boards and committees, which promote awareness, health and consumption of fresh vegetables in New Zealand, and education and marketing programmes such as Fruit in Schools

and 5+ Plus A Day. Outside work time Robin is a keen cyclist, and when asked what he would be doing if not growing vegetables he said, “Biking my way around the world, I am quietly doing it bit at a time. On Sunday I leave for four weeks biking in Tibet and Nepal. I will ride my bike to base camp on the Tibet side of Everest and enjoy views of the mighty mountain itself, part-time living the dream!”

Discovery of invasive weed in Canterbury The invasive weed, great willowherb, or Epilobium hirsutum, has been found growing in several areas in Canterbury. Great willowherb has not previously been recorded as present in New Zealand. Biosecurity New Zealand (MPI) said the initial discoveries occurred in and around the lake at Pegasus township in the Waimakariri District, and near the Kate Valley landfill, located approximately 40 kilometres north of Lake Pegasus. A field team has been searching all likely places in the wider area to determine the extent of the incursion. To date, great willowherb has been positively identified at five sites. Great willowherb is characterised by its aggressive growth, and there is concern it may crowd out native wetland plants.

It can form dense stands, impeding water flow in waterways and wetlands. It may also spread to undisturbed damp areas and invade existing vegetation. However, Biosecurity New Zealand said at present there is no risk to freshwater fish or agriculture. Biosecurity New Zealand Response team manager, John Brightwell, said once the extent of the incursion is understood, officials will be in a better position to determine what response actions can be carried out. “We’re in the early stages of determining the severity of this incursion,” Brightwell said. “Once we’ve determined this, we’ll work closely with Environment Canterbury and the Department of

Conservation to develop an appropriate response.” In the meantime, Biosecurity New Zealand is urging all Cantabrians especially to be on the lookout for great willowherb and to report it to Biosecurity New Zealand’s pest and diseases hotline if they think they’ve spotted it anywhere on public or private property. “If you think you’ve seen great willowherb, don’t remove it,” Brightwell said. “Take a close-up photo and call 0800 80 99 66 to report it. It’s extremely important that members of the public do not attempt to remove this weed on their own. They may mistake it for other, similar-looking native plants and, just as importantly, they may risk spreading the seeds.” Great willowherb is a flowering plant also commonly known as the hairy willowherb or great hairy willowherb. It is a highly invasive weed in parts of North America and in Victoria, Australia. It is closely related to and sometimes mistaken for a rare, endangered native herb (Epilobium hirtigerum) that goes by the common name of hairy willowherb. Overseas, great willowherb typically

grows in wet or damp places without dense tree cover, up to 2,500 metres above sea-level. Common habitats include marshland, ditches and the banks of rivers and streams. At this time of year, most of the flowers will be gone, and the plant will be partially covered in seed. Great willowherb reproduces by winddispersed seeds and spreads by its thick rhizomes (underground stems). It tends to spread most rapidly in early autumn. The rhizomes can grow submerged in water or water-saturated soils, but can also spread into meadows and other upland areas. Other characteristics of great willowherb: • grows up to two metres tall • stems are erect and branched • large, showy pink-purple flowers (3cm diameter) with white centres and notched petals • leaves are opposite, lance-shaped, tooth-edged, and attach directly on the stem • long, narrow seed pods split open to release numerous seeds with long white hairs ¢

Lifestyles ‘n’ Farming Lincoln research reinforces Ecotain’s nitrogen-reducing capabilities New independent research findings continue to highlight the nitrogen mitigating effects of Ecotain environmental plantain, with one study showing it halved the concentration of urinary nitrogen in cows. In September 2017, proprietary seed company Agricom announced major research findings that showed Ecotain could significantly reduce nitrogen leaching from urine patches on livestock farms. Most nitrogen leaching from livestock farms comes from the urine patch, an area containing high concentrations of nitrogen from animals’ urine. Agricom’s lead scientist, Dr Glenn Judson, said the new independent research findings, which have come from several post-graduate students’ PhD theses, continue to demonstrate the benefits of Ecotain. “We’ve collected and analysed the findings from these various research projects, and they’re reinforcing what has previously been proven about Ecotain’s nitrogen mitigating properties,” Dr Judson said. The initial research from Agricom, alongside Lincoln and Massey universities and Plant + Food Research, found Ecotain can function in pasture systems to reduce nitrogen leaching in four ways, known as Dilute, Reduce, Delay and Restrict. Consuming Ecotain increases the volume of cows’ urine, which dilutes the concentration of nitrogen, it reduces the total amount

of dietary nitrogen in animals’ urine, it delays the process of turning ammonium into nitrate in the urine patch, and it restricts the accumulation of nitrate in soils growing Ecotain. Dr Judson said the new independent research findings support the nitrogen mitigating properties Agricom and its partners have found in each of the dilute, reduce, delay and restrict functions of Ecotain, and in some cases drills a little bit deeper. A study by Lincoln University student Lisa Box reinforced the effectiveness of the reduce and dilute functions of Ecotain, finding that where cows were offered swards containing 50 per cent Ecotain (with ryegrass/clover), the concentration of urinary nitrogen was reduced by 33 per cent. Dr Judson said researchers at Agricom are nearing the end of a 40-day trial in Canterbury where they have grazed lambs on different plantain cultivars, including Ecotain, and collected the urine to look at the nitrogen concentration and its effect on ammonium levels in the soil. “From what we’re seeing in our preliminary results so far, the urine from the lambs grazing the Ecotain strip is the most dilute, and we should have a

better understanding of how this relates to the effectiveness of the nitrification inhibitor by mid-June,” he said. Research findings from Lincoln University researcher, Anna Carlton, on Ecotain’s restrict function shows the nitrogen mitigating impact of just a small amount of Ecotain in pasture. “Anna’s research found that having a 20–30% amount of Ecotain in a sward facilitates a reduction in nitrogen leaching

of about 70%, relative to ryegrass/ white clover swards, which means that even a small amount of Ecotain in a mixed sward produces extremely useful nitrogen-reducing results.” Dr Judson said other research projects are ongoing with more results to come, with two projects on the horizon focussing on understanding Ecotain’s bioactive compounds and its farm-scale impact in pasture. ¢

Getting the job done right

From Concept ...to Consent

A boom in the local population, coupled with a buoyant real estate market has seen the value of Selwyn homes increase substantially in recent years.

Nevertheless, now the inevitable has occurred — those who specialise in making new homes and existing homes better are in hot demand. With winter approaching fast, this has led to a ‘time squeeze’ on our local tradies, with two outcomes. The first is that waiting for a job to be undertaken is the ‘new normal’ in what was once an ‘instant gratification’ marketplace. All tradespeople from all parts of the industry agree — if you are qualified and competent — right now, you will be busy. That means that gone are the days of being able to begin work this very minute — except in dire emergencies.

The call from tradespeople is clear — if you have a job that needs doing, plan ahead and talk to them sooner rather than later. While our local glaziers, electricians, plumbers and more, will still move heaven and earth to help those in true distress; elective projects like renovations, room additions, upgrades and expansions are on a timetable as one would expect in many of the world’s big cities. The good news — it’s a great time to be a qualified professional right now. There’s plenty of work available for those looking to make a ‘sea change’

and quit the rat race, with many of our long-established tradespeople hiring new talent. There’s also a golden opportunity for apprentices to learn the fundamentals and rise to becoming qualified in their own right. It’s at times like these when we must thank those companies who have had the foresight to train apprentices during leaner years, in time for what is happening now. And it is not just a growth in the trade services that Selwyn is experiencing. There has been a steady rise in the number of professional services, such

as accountancy, law, engineering and health, being offered in Selwyn, meaning locals do not have to travel into the big smoke to get the help they need. Many of those now offering those services were commuters themselves, travelling into Christchurch for work, but now with the rapid growth in population across the district are now able to base themselves locally. There is, however, another aspect of this kind of scenario, which comes into play. Many of the tradespeople in Selwyn have heard about unqualified workers with limited experience and no credentials taking advantage of the credulous and frantic. The message from both the government and professional organisations is clear — you don’t need the trouble, which unlicensed tradies

bring. Since new laws came into effect to upgrade building practices, penalties for impersonating a real electrician, builder, roofer or fireplace specialist, for example, have gotten perilously steep. Massive fines can be just the beginning — and not just for the fraudulent worker. It’s an offence to knowingly hire an unqualified person to undertake certain sensitive areas of work — structural building, electrical wiring, plumbing and sanitation — the list goes on. Being slapped with a penalty could be the mildest of outcomes should things go truly wrong. With winter nearly here the list of jobs to be undertaken around the home seems to double. The advice from our hard-working local tradespeople is more important now than ever — it’s better to wait a week or two to have the job done once
