The school held a Pink Shirt Day and collected over $360 to go toward the Friendship Seat. The school’s promotion officer Rita Spadoni said the idea behind the seat is that whenever children have no-one to play with at lunchtime, they can sit on this seat and someone will come over and invite them to join in with their games. “It is hoped children will approach the one in the seat, make sure he or she is all right and ask them to play. It also aims to help prevent bullying before it becomes a problem.” Pictured are children from the Ti Kouka Community (Y4 to Y6).

Pupils from West Melton and Prebbleton primary schools, and Lincoln High School, are among over 100,000 students from 541 schools already registered for Kids Voting ahead of the general election in September. Chief Electoral Officer Alicia Wright said that compares with 78,000 students from 556 schools at the last election in 2014 and they are expecting more to join up. “The high number of early registrations shows schools are keen to give their students an opportunity to learn about the electoral process,” Ms Wright said. “It’s a practical way to show students how our electoral system works and helps them understand the process and get ready to vote when they turn 18. “Voting is a lifelong habit. The earlier young people start to vote, the more likely they are to keep voting.” Ms Wright said it can be run on a small or large scale, from one to two classes to the whole school. “It’s great fun for students and teachers and some schools go all

Arbor Day planting record Selwyn residents are being asked to be part of a record-setting attempt: to plant the largest number of native trees in New Zealand in one day. The challenge comes from Trees That Count, a conservation group which aims to inspire New Zealanders to plant 4.7 million native trees in 2017. The event will be held on Arbor Day which is on Monday June 5. Trees That Count project director Tanya Hart said the Arbor Day campaign provides an opportunity for everyone to make a substantial impact. “We’re aiming to get more than 10,000 trees pledged and planted for Arbor Day, which also happens to be a public holiday,” Ms Hart said. “With almost 9,000 trees pledged so far, we’re well on the way to success, but we’d love for more Kiwis to get their hands dirty. There’s never been a record set for this before, and we want to set the bar high so we can do even better next year.” Ms Hart said planting native trees helps restore and enhance New Zealand’s environment, by creating habitats for native birds and insects, and encouraging clean air and waterways. “Crucially, it also makes a difference to climate health in New Zealand by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions,” she said. “If every Kiwi plants just one native tree, whether at a community planting

event or in their back garden, this small action will have a major effect against climate change.” For more on how to get involved go to www.treesthatcount.co.nz. The website features a live counting tally of planting activity that will enable people to keep up with the Arbor Day tally, and progress towards the 2017 goal of 4.7 million trees planted. ¢

Since 2008 Lincoln Envirotown (LET) has run the awards which aim to encourage and support local businesses to become more environmentally sustainable without involving any significant costs. LET project manager Dave Fitzjohn said this year the awards have undergone changes to both the survey that businesses are asked to complete, and the process which will be conducted online. “The new look survey has also been designed to make the awards a little more challenging,” Mr Fitzjohn said. “It is to the credit of our local businesses that this has become necessary because their practices were improving so rapidly. “The other exciting development is that for the first time, businesses of every Selwyn district will be invited to participate. “Malvern and West Melton were assessed last year for the first time and were the only areas that underwent the process in 2016 while work was done on the new awards for everyone.” He said businesses will still be aiming to receive awards ranging from Bronze to Platinum and there will be the same area winners.

“However, this year we aim to declare an overall Selwyn winner and to have a separate category for educational entries which will allow all our district’s schools to compete against each other, as well as receiving their relevant certificate. “It is a testament to the educators that schools have traditionally received high awards for their sustainable practices.” In June assessors and LET’s Responsible Business Coordinator will be sending an online survey to businesses. Assessors will then arrange visits, to discuss the results of the survey and talk to people about their practices and initiatives. “Businesses have reported very favourably on the changes that have been implemented and we look forward to an interesting and exciting awards season.” Mr Fitzjohn said they would like to thank the Lincoln University Researchers Tracy Anne De Silva, Azadeh Nilipour, and Charlotte Thompson, who have been largely instrumental in getting business feedback on our previous awards and devising a new survey in response to this feedback. “We are also grateful to Andrew Boyd of Selwyn District Council for his advice in some areas.” ¢

“So I had a good idea of how the council operates through this as well as attending a few AGMs and Darfield Art Week, which is spectacular.” Mr Baldwin said the council had been looking for someone who could fill the role of chair and devote a good amount of volunteer time to the organisation. “I had been approached by a couple of friends who are long time members of the MCAC and they encouraged me to consider working as chair. “Because of some administrative experience I had from working with the Anglican church in Christchurch I felt I had some of those skills that would be needed for the role.” He said his goal as chair of the organisation is to strengthen its community support and to continue to provide high quality art exhibits for the art gallery and art week. “We have a fabulous Gallery committee and Artweek committee, and those volunteers are really passionate about their work and I want to ensure that work is continued.” Mr Baldwin holds a Bachelor of Music (Hons) and Master of Arts degrees from Western University, as well as a Master of Theological Studies from Huron University College, in London, Canada. Also at the AGM where Mr Baldwin was confirmed as chair, Alastair Nicol and Lana Coles were reappointed as treasurer and secretary respectively, while Carol Van Leeuwen is a

new appointment to the executive committee, joining Terri Elder, Meg Morten, Judith Pascoe, Kirsty Peel and Paul Rosanowski. Also elected were the various sub-committees for MCAC, which include the Gallery Committee, which is responsible for developing the exhibition programme and overseeing Selwyn Gallery operations, the Performing Arts committee and the Artweek committee. The elected chairs of these committees are: Meg Morten (Gallery), Melissa Jebson (Performing Arts) and Terri Elder (Artweek). ¢

Darfield through to semis

Selwyn shows off musical talent

u by Kent Caddick

Darfield’s dream run in the Combined Country rugby competition has continued albeit by the narrowest of margins.

Rehearsals are underway for a major collaborative musical event happening in Selwyn in July.

After going through its section unbeaten Darfield faced up to qualifiers Oxford in the quarter-finals of the Luisetti Seeds Combined Canterbury Country competition on home soil on Saturday afternoon. The damp conditions made handling extremely difficult but no quarter was given by either side throughout the 80 minutes. Oxford led 6-3 at halftime, with all points coming from the boot. Both sides stepped up a gear in the second half with Darfield outscoring Oxford two tries to one to secure the win 17-16. After an early second half penalty to Oxford Tim Wright crossed for Darfield’s first try, which was converted by Scott Mitchell, giving the home side its first lead in the match, 10-9. Almost immediately Oxford replied with

a converted try of its own to retake the lead but with five minutes of the match remaining Blair McIlroy crashed over for a try, which was duly converted by Mitchell, to give Darfield a spot in the semis. Meanwhile, Southbridge extracted revenge on Waihora for its loss in the competition final last year by overturning its Ellesmere neighbours 31-25 in an entertaining match to move through to the semi-finals. Lincoln caused the upset of the quarter-finals with a 19-15 win over North Canterbury powerhouse Glenmark in a match played in Cheviot, while Rakaia secured its place in the semis with a 20-15 win over Prebbleton. This weekend Darfield will be at home to Rakaia while Southbridge will host Lincoln in the other semi-final. ¢

Mrs Burney said while there have been events like Selwyn Sounds there has been nothing which features Selwyn-only performers and this is an opportunity for those groups to come together and showcase their talent. The concert will feature performances from members of the local musical theatre group the Kirwee Players, the 50-member strong Selwyn Community Choir, Selwyn Youth Choir and the Ellesmere Pipe Band. “In addition local band Algal Bloom will perform along with various talented duos and individual artists from Selwyn

Lincoln’s dominance of the Selwyn premier netball championship continued on the weekend with a comprehensive win over Southbridge. The defending champion maintained its grip on the top of table with a 81–33 thumping of Southbridge at the Lincoln Events Centre on Saturday. While the youthful Southbridge started the game well it had little answer to the power of the Lincoln side which is sporting some new faces this season. Second placed Greenpark was equally

dominant in its match with bottom placed Burnham recording a 50-point winning margin to take the game 83–33, to keep Burnham winless this season. In the other match of the round, Broadfield was pushed by Halswell but in the end ran out comfortable winner 60–47, securing third spot in the competition. ¢

THE

LLAMA BY ANN MORGAN Julie Insley lives with her herd of 32 llama on 26 acres of easy to flat land. The land was originally developed for horticulture with a variety of shelterbelts and Julie found the property perfect for her animals.

“I

don’t farm my llama for fibre but as working animals. We put packs on them and pick rubbish up down on the roads, take them down the beach for picnics and use them for community events.” says Julie. Julie grew up in the dairy farming industry and like most farming children had a lot of contact with horses.

“I was involved in the horse scene and now I find llamas are really safe in comparison to horses. Llamas don’t kick, bite, stomp or throw hissy fits like horses can.” She has had her herd for 20 years and enjoys the fact that they are an intelligent animal. “You have to learn all about body language and how to

Julie Insley and friends Kaitlyn and Kathy with Julie’s llama Poetry in Motion

outsmart them. They have a personal space and have to be trained to be touched.” Julie says once trained they will go in the direction you want them to go in simply by moving your head or shoulder. Llamas in New Zealand were originally imported from England, Canada, the United States and Chile. Although they originated in South America, coming from different regions around the world means there are more types including long, short or medium wool coats. “I have the short wool which are classic. The woolly ones need grooming and the shorter coat ones tend to be

taller. “We use ours for charity work including rest home visits, daffodil day collecting and fundraisers.” A male llama is called a macho, a female is a hembra and a baby is a cria. The gestation period is around 11-and-ahalf months and up to a year sometimes. “Some breeders want one baby a year and get the mothers pregnant again within two weeks of giving birth. We don’t do that to ours, we let them rest.” Llama is not an eating meat although they were imported into Australia for colonial settlers but it is said the settlers did not like the taste. “Those I know who have tried it have only ever

tried it once — even dogs walk away. It has a very strong flavour.” Julie believes llamas are good for lifestyle blocks as they are low maintenance. They only need to be shorn once a year, and if you only have a couple this can be done with a pair of scissors. Toenails can need trimming either six weekly or six monthly depending on the genetics. “They love hills they can clamber up and they love to stand at the top and look at the view and see what is going on. They enjoy licking lichen off a rock and having rubbishy stuff to chew on like gorse and blackberry. We feed ours hay for roughage as we just have grass.” One of the biggest health issues for llama is facial eczema, and this is now creeping across the country with the weather changes. “Check with your local veterinarian if there are any cases in your area in sheep or cows. There is lots of information online or call the Llama Association for advice if need be. “We feed ours zinc oxide mixed in their food when we know the season is approaching. Don’t take your eyes off facial eczema because they are very sensitive to it.

Pay attention!

“Like humans, they have the fight or flight instinct. Flight is their first defence. They can run fast but if they are cornered and feel under attack they will stomp their front feet. “They used to stomp on pumas which were their main predator.” Julie says if any strange animal walks onto their land they will alarm call to let everyone in the herd know. “A friend came to visit with their dog and one llama was in the house paddock. The llama looked at the dog and slowly walked away. Five minutes later 25 other llamas came back to the house paddock to sort out the dog. They are an amazing animal with looking out for themselves.” There are approximately 1,500 llamas in New Zealand — they are kept more as a hobby. “They like working and getting out to do things — they don’t like being stuck in a paddock and being ignored. They like people and are very understanding of them. “It would be good if more people understood them as there is a lot to learn. Everyone should have a couple in their front paddock — they would learn a whole lot of new things.”

Gypsy Week

Fresh start for Gypsy Day u by Andy Bryenton

Most farmers will know the history and meaning behind June first being labelled ‘Gypsy Day’ — not a reference to the Romany travellers of Europe, but a nod to the migration of farming families in early times here in New Zealand. Leading up to the traditional day of farm sales and new contracts, many families packed up their herd and all their belongings, walking the ‘long acre’ to greener pastures. Today that’s all been changed, but Gypsy Day is still a time for fresh starts. One of the most important comes with the new contracts drawn up for sharemilkers and new staff on dairy farms, which are equal parts home and business in the modern age. With the introduction of new employment laws this April, 2017 it is definitely a year for concentrating on the details when it comes to farming employment contracts. Amendments to the Employment Act 2000 mean that there’s new ground to cover, ensuring that all parties know their rights and obligations and understand the nature

of particulars of the contract they are entering into. It may have an impact well beyond this week of change and new enterprises — indeed, contracts agreed upon now could form the basis for whole farming futures. One major change covers the issue of hours — which must be agreed upon early, rather than on the fly. This requirement for clear definition of hours means that if there is a requirement to be available in busy periods, such as calving, silage making time or harvest, it must be documented along with equitable compensation for workers. This may be difficult to predict in an

industry at the mercy of Mother Nature, so good advice is key. This new nuance to the law may see the end of seasonal averaging in many roles, as inaccuracies might cause an employee’s wage to ‘dip’ below the legislated minimum.

Thankfully, the hard work of comprehending and unpacking the new changes to our employment laws has already been done — local lawyers and advisers have been poring over the technical points well in advance to ensure a smooth as possible transition this Gypsy Week. Farmers undertaking new contracts and unsure of their next move are well advised to seek assistance, as a little work now alongside a professional may save grief later in the year. Putting ‘best practice’ procedures in place now will mean an easier time hiring and retaining good staff this year and into the future. ¢

WARM UP FOR WINTER Top tips for heat pumps Heat pumps are very popular but it’s important to choose an efficient model and use it properly, according to EECA Energywise. EECA Technical Expert Christian Hoerning says heat pumps can be very economic if used correctly, they are convenient and produce instant heat. Types of heat pump Single-split systems are the most common heat pumps in New Zealand — they are air-to-air, with one indoor unit connected to an outdoor unit. These systems are designed to heat just the room that they are installed in, not the whole house. Multi-split heat pumps are designed to heat multiple rooms — and consist of one outdoor unit serving multiple indoor units installed in different rooms of the house. Ducted heat pumps provide central heating — by blowing heated air through ducts into multiple rooms of a house. While some can only be controlled centrally, others allow you to choose which rooms or groups of rooms you want to be heated at any given time (zoning). For example, you may only want to have your bedrooms heated overnight.

Choosing an efficient model All heat pumps have an Energy Rating Label that helps you compare the efficiency of similar sized models. The more stars, the more energy efficient a unit is — red stars are for heating efficiency and blue stars are for cooling. A heat pump label has two numbers that can tell you more about the heat pump’s performance: 1. Capacity output — the amount of heating or cooling (kW) you will get out of the heat pump (at its rated capacity, at 7˚C outdoors) 2. Power input — the amount of power the heat pump uses (kW) to produce the cool or hot air. Some heat pumps struggle to perform when it’s just above freezing point outside. Ask your supplier for a heat pump that will perform well in your region. A good quality unit — sized and installed correctly — should perform effectively down to minus 15°C. ¢

A new mobile phone app will help farmers, transporters, stock agents and veterinarians determine whether an animal is fit for transport. The app has been developed by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) in conjunction with other industry players and vets, MPI’s Director of Verification Services Dr Chris Kebbell, said the app is an easy and efficient tool to help people make the right decision for the welfare of animals. “It consolidates available information into one place and doesn’t require internet access, which makes it suitable for on-farm use,” Mr Kebbell said. “Most people in the primary sectors are well aware of the fitness for transport requirements, but MPI veterinarians at processing plants still see some animals arrive that should not have been transported. “Animal welfare is everyone’s responsibility and farmers, transporters, stock agents and veterinarians all have a role to play in ensuring only fit animals are transported.” “The information in the app is based on the transport requirements in the codes of welfare for dairy cattle, deer, sheep and beef cattle.” Mr Kebbell said the app, developed under MPI’s Safeguarding our Animals,

p Farmers will benefit from a new phone app aimed at determining whether animals are fit for transport

Safeguarding our Reputation Programme, is a tool to improve voluntary compliance with animal welfare requirements. “One of the ways we achieve this is through the development of resources to support owners and people in charge of animals. “There has been demand for this tool and many are excited that it’s now available. We’ve had great feedback so far,” he said.

The app also contains the requirements for the recently implemented regulations for young calves. New fitness for transport regulations are currently under development and the app will be updated once they are implemented. To download the app, head to iTunes (for Apple devices) or Google Play (for Android devices) and search ‘fit for transport’. ¢

Rural health at risk The lives of rural New Zealanders are at risk every day because of poor connectivity and inequitable health services. all government departments and we want to fast track a new definition of rurality as it pertains to health services in New Zealand. “These are two of the most important ways we can hold policy makers to account for equitable health outcomes for rural people.” Dr London said mobile blackspots remain a serious issue across rural New Zealand, especially in case of emergencies. “Poor broadband connectivity is a barrier to education and the slow pace of UFB and RBI2 roll-outs are dampening progress, production and innovation.” He said the responses to major disasters such as last year’s Kaikoura earthquake show what can be done in an innovative way to bring services to rural areas. “Much can be learned from these adverse events and needs to be carried over into business as usual. It’s just a pity it takes a major earthquake to do it. “We also know there are simply unrealistic expectations placed on the rural health workforce especially in regard to emergency and afterhours services. “Our rural health workforce is ageing, tired and burnt-out and we need better

That’s according to Dr Martin London, chair of the Rural Health Alliance of Aotearoa New Zealand (RHAANZ), who says government needs to help remove barriers so rural people’s health be considered just as important as those who live in cities. RHAANZ, which has 47 national member organisations encompassing rural health providers, agribusiness groups, universities, rural community groups and local government, recently held its national rural conferences in Wellington. RHAANZ chair Dr London also met with Health Minister Jonathan Coleman to outline the organisation’s priorities for improving health services in rural areas. “We reminded him (Mr Coleman) that with at least 600,000 people living in rural regions, effectively New Zealand’s second largest city, we are an important constituency from an economic and political perspective,” Dr London said. “Overseas evidence links health and wellbeing to economic productivity. Intuitively this will apply in New Zealand so it is an imperative rural people receive their fair share of publicly funded health services and have equitable access to health services. We asked him to reinstate rural proofing across

retention and recruitment. We need greater workforce flexibility, nurse practitioners and pharmacists for example, as a key way to improve access to health services for rural people. Dr

London said we also need to make our small towns liveable so that people want to come and to stay. “If we can make our rural communities vibrant again many of our issues will be solved.” ¢
