NEWS briefs Duck season off to a good start Rangiora resident Kurtis Smith has spina bifida, but that hasn’t stopped him living the long-held dream of going duck shooting — thanks to a mate he met on Facebook. Kurtis has always wanted to go duck hunting, and when he saw a Facebook post from Jarrad Melhopt offering a new hunter the opportunity to go game bird hunting, Kurtis took it. With Kiwi ingenuity, they made a bridge from two old fences and some plywood to give him access to the hunting spot. Kurtis parked his wheelchair for the day and could use his crutches to get out onto the pond in the Selwyn District. He soon bagged his first duck and many more were to come as the day progressed. It was one of many success stories coming out of the first day of the 2019 duck shooting season. In Selwyn, weather was pleasant with fog in northern areas helping pond hunters in particular. North Canterbury Fish & Game officer Dirk Barr said hunters were out in large numbers. “Most hunters in the area shot two or more birds in the first hour, and some in the right places had very good tallies, with some reaching their bag limit of 25 birds,” Mr Barr said.

p Kurtis Smith in foreground Photo: Fish and Game

One seasoned hunter said that he hadn’t seen as many birds in the past 20 years. Fish & Game communications adviser Richard Cosgrove said that hunters appear to have taken on board ‘safety first’ advice and other messages — those relating to new firearm laws. “We’ve had no reports of any firearmrelated incidents or injuries, which is gratifying given the thousands who have headed out to harvest birds. ¢

Awards never more important Entries to The Westpac Champion Business Awards are now open, with Leeann Watson, chief executive of the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce, saying the awards have “never been more important”.

Heat your home the easy way

Watson said the awards continue to be an opportunity for the Canterbury business community to come together to celebrate success and to showcase this success at a national level. “The awards are a celebration of our region’s brightest. They recognise and celebrate businesses that embody innovation, excellence and success, rewarding the businesses that shape the future of Canterbury and New Zealand. “There is no doubt that our region has been through some challenging times over the last few years, so coming together for something so positive has never been more important. “For our local businesses, these awards are a fantastic way to broadcast that they are proud of their team’s achievements, and even just being nominated can contribute to a positive, engaging culture. It’s always so heartening to see the immense pride on the faces of all those involved at the end of the programme.” Naming partner Westpac has been a long-term partner of the awards, which Westpac’s area manager commercial

Finalists will be announced on August 7, with the awards ceremony on the evening of Wednesday, September 18. The awards are free to enter and open to individuals and organisations of all sizes and from any industry sector, including the not-for-profit sector. ¢

The Willows opening on Saturday u by Mike Isle

The eagerly anticipated opening of The Willows in West Melton will take place this Saturday. The park has been developed by Environment Canterbury and Selwyn District Council for non-motorised recreational activities. Environment Canterbury park rangers will be at the opening to show people around the park and Selwyn mayor Sam Broughton will be in attendance. James Page, team leader parks and forests for Environment Canterbury, said this was an exciting development for the region. “Cantabrians and visitors to the Selwyn area can make the most of this park,” Page said. “We are very proud of this development and believe it has something for everyone to enjoy.” Park-goers can make the most of two dedicated trails, one for walking and one for cycling, while there is also a motorhome camping area for New Zealand Motor Caravan Association members. There is fishing access along the river frontage at The Willows and Weedons Forest, with access via Thompsons Road and Weedons Ross Road. Trail bike riders have a dedicated area at the Weedons Ross Road end of the park. Four-wheel drive enthusiasts can access the river upstream of Intake Road on the south bank or the north bank of the Waimakariri River, west of Harrs Road. The Willows is at the end of Thompsons Road, off Old West Coast Road in West Melton. The opening will

The Kirwee Recreation Reserve is to have a ‘spruce up’ with two planting days planned for the reserve later this week, and the reserve’s management committee is encouraging the public to get involved.

p Gemma Franklin, an Environment Canterbury field ranger, makes the most of The Willows

start at midday on Saturday, May 11. Everyone is welcome, and people are encouraged to arrive from 11.30am. For more information about the opening of The Willows, contact the Environment Canterbury parks team via duty.ranger@ecan.govt.nz. ¢

“This is exciting and a good opportunity for the community to come together and get involved with what we hope will be a lasting legacy at the Kirwee Recreation Reserve. We look forward to seeing many of the local residents there,” the management committee’s chairperson Raewyn Feast said. “The planting of native plants is to form a ‘green dot’ in Kirwee. The idea is to establish ecosystems and native bird life on the Reserve. “We have been given support and advice from Te Ara Kakariki Greenway Canterbury Trust. “They have assisted the committee in a planting plan, deciding on suitability of plants and advice on

the establishment of native plants.” The first planting day, Friday, May 10, will see students of the Kirwee Model School planting native trees under the supervision of their teachers and the Kirwee Recreation Reserve Management Committee. The students and the public will also be treated to an educational session on native planting and ecosystems. A second planting day will take place the following day, Saturday, May 11. Planting will begin both days at 9.30am on Tramway Road. Raewyn Feast said this is only the beginning of the required planting with further planting of trees and shrubs in the area to give shelter across the reserve. ¢

Big weekend for ploughing u by Mike Isle

The NZ Ploughing Championship is this year returning to Canterbury for the first time in three years.

p The early days of ploughing will be on display

The 2019 Championship, a two-day event, will be held this weekend at the Wilkinson Farm, Wilkinson Road in Chertsey, just outside of Ashburton. One organiser, John Hall, said the championship historically attracted a large crowd and this year would be no exception. “It’s a great two days out, both for the rural and urban communities.” He said the event was the culmination of 24 regional and club ploughing competitions and the national championship would showcase the country’s best ploughmen displaying their skills. As well as the ploughing, he said there was a host of other attractions for the public. “Outside of the actual competition, we’ll have displays of conventional

and reversible ploughing, vintage and horse ploughing, trade displays and vintage tractors.” John Hall won’t be drawn on what will be a personal highlight for himself, other than to say “[it’s] all good”. However, he said he is looking forward to seeing a large crowd and putting on a show for them that includes everything from classic horse-drawn ploughing to New Zealand’s largest and latest tractors. The 2019 NZ Ploughing Championship is hosted by the Rakaia Ploughing Match Association. It is this weekend at Chertsey. Admission is $10 for adults; children are free. The NZ Ploughing Association has a webpage nzplough. co.nz for further details and a map to the location. ¢

More success for Lincoln u by Mike Isle

Lincoln University has again come out on top in one of the leading national research quality measures.

New Civil Defence manager u by Mike Isle

Selwyn District has a new Civil Defence manager, and he says he leads a top team ready to respond to any emergency.

p Professor Bruce McKenzie

The Tertiary Education Commission’s newly released Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF) results put Lincoln first in the measure of average quality scores of active researchers for each postgraduate and final year undergraduate student. “It means at Lincoln, you have the highest probability of being taught or supervised by a high-ranking researcher,” acting vice-chancellor Professor Bruce McKenzie said. Lincoln also led that measure during the last PBRF assessment in 2012. “The PBRF rankings are a great result for Lincoln University. Our overall quality evaluation score increased by 30 per cent, our ‘A’ scores by 23 per cent and

our ‘B’ scores went up 40 per cent. “That is due to researchers publishing in higher quality publications and improved research impact.” Professor McKenzie said the results also highlighted Lincoln strengths in land-based disciplines. “The university’s focus on the landbased sectors is clearly evident in the data reported. We have demonstrated continued strength in the areas of agriculture and primary production, biological sciences and environmental management, and natural sciences; well supported by social sciences, management and marketing. Food and health is also a steadily growing sector for Lincoln University,” he said. ¢

Al Lawn took over as the council’s Civil Defence manager in April. His plan is to build on the work undertaken by the team under former manager Ryan O’Rourke, former emergency management officer Tasha Black, and current team members Sue Jenkins and Jason Flewellen. “They have helped create a Civil Defence team that is the envy of many in New Zealand. They have done a brilliant job, so I’m just following on their coat-tails,” he said. A former policeman and volunteer firefighter, Mr Lawn has worked extensively for Civil Defence in the past five years including as the district’s Civil Defence controller, and recovery manager after the Port Hills fire. He spent three weeks assisting with the management of the Civil Defence response to the Kaikoura earthquakes and 10 months as a response manager in the northern South Island overseeing the Ministry of Primary Industries response to the Mycoplasma bovis outbreak. Having farmed near Lincoln for 20 years and serving as a district licensing commissioner for five years, he said he

p Selwyn’s new Civil Defence manager Al Lawn

enjoys living and working in the district. His responsibility includes ensuring the district is as resilient and prepared, as best it can be, to respond to any adverse event. That includes making sure resources are in place to enable communities to respond through their Community Response teams and the district’s Response/Rescue Team. Al Lawn encourages everyone in the Selwyn district to sign up to Selwyn Gets Ready, which will help the district respond better to any adverse events. ¢

Journey ends in happiness Rare award for professor

A long road from Nigeria to Rolleston ended in happiness for the Iposu family when they were welcomed as New Zealand citizens.

Recently announced Lincoln University Distinguished Professor Phil Hulme will share his expertise with a free lecture for the public to celebrate the honour.

p The Iposu family pictured here with Mayor Sam Broughton, Major Soren Hall from Burnham Military Camp

The family were among nine new New Zealanders from Nigeria, the Philippines and Nepal who were sworn in at the latest citizenship ceremony held in the council chambers. Sade Iposu said it had been a long journey to citizenship, but the family couldn’t be happier. “We’re so grateful, so happy, so pleased — at last.” Mrs Iposu said her husband first moved to New Zealand in 2003 to complete his PhD at Lincoln University and the family joined him in 2005. Mrs Iposu, a microbiologist by training, got a job with the Canterbury District Health Board and was later able to retrain as a nurse.

The family loved Selwyn and had built a house in Faringdon, Mrs Iposu said. They had felt welcomed by people, with great friends who supported her through working and looking after four children when her husband had to return to Nigeria for a time. After a delay with their residency application, the family were delighted to officially be New Zealanders. “We have been so blessed to have a Kiwi family who were so welcoming and lovely and said this is your home too,” Mrs Iposu said. “It’s not an easy journey, but what I have learned along the way is you just have to focus and never give up.” ¢

he 17-year-old Selwyn resident was one of 27 students who visited Lincoln University’s dairy farm as part of the Rabobank FoodX programme. Cameron is the head boy at St Thomas of Canterbury College and is planning on attending the open day at Lincoln University in July. “We had to wake up quite early, but I really enjoyed it and thought it could be an interesting summer job while I am at university. It was an amazing experience. We got to stand next to the cows and put the milking clusters onto their teats,” said Cameron. “Prior to the programme, I wasn’t really

interested in agriculture or studying it at university, but I will now be giving it strong consideration. Rabobank FoodX has been such an eye-opening experience. We got to see all of the different jobs available in the agri-food sector, and many of them pay well. “I really enjoy business and economics. I have been considering studying a commerce degree next year and met a number of people at Rabobank FoodX who have done agri-commerce degrees, which gives them an edge. One was a Lincoln University graduate who works for dairy processor Synlait. It was great to pick his brains about my options.”

Using high-tech machines to milk the cows was an eyeopener for participants in the programme who thought cows are still milked by hand

The Rabobank FoodX programme is an opportunity for students to experience life on the farm first hand

The four-day programme is a joint initiative between Rabobank, Lincoln University and NZ Young Farmers designed to promote careers in the primary industries to urban students. They visited a range of agri-businesses, including Synlait, Hellers, Gladfield Malt, Mt Peel Station and Rakaia Island, which milks 9,000 dairy cows.

For 16-year-old Anna Yates, it was also her first time in a milking shed. “I got such a surprise. I have to admit I didn’t realise high-tech machines are used to milk cows, I genuinely thought they were still milked by hand,” she said. “It was very different to what I was expecting and just goes to show how little I knew about agriculture. of exciting agri-related careers on offer,” said New Zealand Young Farmers’ David Highsted. “All of these students are going to be walking billboards for the primary industries after this experience. “It is a great way to help the agrisector connect with their classmates and teachers.”

Maple butter cream ingredients: • 6 large egg whites • 1½ c icing sugar • 2 c unsalted butter • 3 tbsp authentic maple syrup Method: Start by baking two cake layers in separate 20inch round pans. Preheat your oven to 175C, then grease the tins and line with baking paper. Whisk flour and baking powder together then set aside. Use a cake mixer or electric beater to cream the butter and sugar together. Add the eggs one by one, followed by the vanilla. To get the cake perfectly fluffy, the trick is to alternate adding the flour mixture prepared earlier with the buttermilk. Alternate small amounts of each and combine until everything is mixed together. Split cake batter between the trays and bake for 30 minutes, or until a skewer poked into the centre comes out clean. While the cake is cooling make the maple butter cream by whisking sugar and egg whites until combined. Heat up a pot of water to a gentle simmer and place your metal mixing bowl on top. Whisk the mix over this gentle heat

for approximately 3 minutes. You may want an electric mixer for the next part. Remove from the heat and continue to whisk until the bowl is cool again; this could take an additional five minutes. Add the maple syrup and finely cubed butter and stir until the mixture is smooth. To assemble, layer a generous amount of buttercream between both sections of cake, then ice with the remainder. ¢

Exceed for speed u by Andy Bryenton

When Toyota wanted to make its original 2000GT something special, they turned to Yamaha to make its engine truly sing. Decades later they came back to help Toyota’s affiliates Lexus with their LFA supercar. Moreover, there’s a level above having Yamaha work on your block or cylinder heads. When the company make a vehicle all by themselves, you get something deliciously mad. Like their nearly forgotten OX99-11 jet fighter-meets-hypercar mash-up, which revved into five digits and looked like something from an anime movie or the YZF R1, the superbike’s superbike, that can make you forget everything from the word ‘Hayabusa’ to your name and address with a quick burst of savage acceleration. Yamaha, then, is no stranger to cranking up more speed and performance from their product range. So what happens when they take something already certifiably insane and turn it up to 11?

The answer is twofold. The first part is the track-only, carbon fibre bodied, 200 horsepower R1M, a bike made for those with nerves of titanium and a need for industrial firefighting sized volumes of adrenaline. The other, which does the business off-road, is a new, fettled, upgraded version of the YXZ1000R, already a serious contender for ‘maddest side-by-side’. Here’s the recipe. Take one, already spicy YXZ with its three-cylinder engine, long travel Fox shocks and lightweight tubular frame. Then boost it up to 998cc with improved cooling from a Baja racer styled rear mounted radiator, right up out of the dust and stones. Beef up the transmission so that it’s now a constant mesh 5-speed unit, with race-car style paddle shifters and an automatic clutch. Nudge the redline up to 10,500 rpm, in superbike territory. Then invite your customers to garnish it with jalapenos. No, seriously. Along with all those upgrades (and some nifty new beadlocked rims, improved roll cage

KIRWEE

p Yamaha’s YXZ has gotten even faster, with a hardcore new super Sport model ready for turbocharged performance

and a sharper look), the internals of the Yamaha’s engine are all forged for extra strength, which means only one thing. They dare you; nay, command you to bolt a turbo onto this beast and make it scream. It’s one thing to know that

your client base is passionate about lateral Gs and big air. It’s another to know them so well that you pre-prepare your engine to receive the blessings of the God of Boost. Well played, Yamaha. Well played indeed. ¢

The changing of the guards u by Andy Bryenton

There was a time when the classic British sports car was the epitome of style and grace. When names like Jensen, Allard, Austin-Healey and Sunbeam were right up there with Aston Martin when it came to conjuring images of wire spoked wheels, dark green paint and woodpanelled interiors. These were small, spirited cars, often with an open top, and they retain their popularity in owners clubs all over the world. A big name in that world was (and is) MG. Founded in 1924 as Morris Garages by Cecil Kimber, the marque produced some long-lasting favourites such as the Midget, the MGA and MGB, and even the latter-day MGF, which shared its tiny size and rear mounted four-cylinder engine with another Brit sports classic, the Lotus Elise. Now, after a hiatus from Longbridge since 2011, the MG brand is back, and it’s on the front of a new kind of machine.

A supermini for the modern city. That means that it’s all about style, and the MG 3 makes a spirited attempt at doing what the new Beetle, Mini and Fiat 500 have achieved, while not looking anything at all like MGs of the past. It’s certainly a good looking little beast, with the heritage appeal of that badge supported by a well-appointed interior with all the tech-savvy bells and whistles, crisp lines and two one alloy mags. It’s definitely sportier looking than many of its tiny competitors, and there’s a surprising amount of space inside. With this kind of funky presentation, it’s up against cars like Suzuki’s Ignis or Kia’s Picanto. The 1.5-litre engine under the hood will not set the world on fire with sheer power, but it is likely to be ferociously economical and reliable, seeing as MG

p The iconic MG badge returns, under the industrial umbrella of international auto giant SAIC

is now actually a part of auto giant SAIC, out of China. The same SAIC who has been impressing us with another ex-English standard, the LDV brand. Their utes and vans have built a reputation for ‘bulletproof’ hard work, and that bodes

well for the little MG. It’s cool, quirky and has a heritage. It’s also amazingly inexpensive to buy. Nevertheless, you can’t help but wish that the new MG would go right back to their roots and build a tiny little drop-top roadster as well. Go on. Do it. ¢
