St John of God Selwyn is putting the finishing touches to its purpose built home which will provide 24-hour supervised care and support for up to six high needs physically disabled people. “Rolleston is an accessible community,” Virginia Spoors, Regional Manager Southern Health and Ability Services, St John of God Hauora Trust said. “There is still a rural feel about the town and people sometimes have family living nearby.” Ms Spoors said the trust first set up a facility in Rolleston two years
ago when it purchased a home which was previously built with wheelchair accessibility. The trust converted this into a six-bedroom home. The new purpose-built home will be situated on the same site, with residents able to socialise together. “There aren’t many homes for people with physical disabilities with high needs. These people are not sick. They are fragile and vulnerable,” Ms Spoors said. “During the day with support they are able to access day programmes in the Rolleston community.
“They use the Selwyn Aquatic Centre and do everyday activities like shopping, going to cafes and visiting family and friends.” Ms Spoors said there was a constant stream of enquiry from people wanting to live in community homes. Residents were able to access additional health care services through the trust’s Halswell Rehabilitation and Therapy Centre. “Some people aren’t going to recover, but we can help them maintain function as long as we can. It’s about keeping people’s independence,” Ms Spoors said.

Rolleston parents are facing changes in education choices for their children due to a boundary reshuffle in preparation for the town’s third state primary school planned to open in 2016.
p West Rolleston School chairperson Simon McDermott shows the rural space which next year will transform into a construction site for the new school
New Rolleston school zone changes go out for public consultation in the next couple of weeks as West Rolleston Primary School prepares to begin construction in the New Year. “With a new primary school we need to identify a zone for the school,” Simon McDermott, chair of the West Rolleston School Establishment Board of Trustees, said. “At the same time Rolleston Primary and Clearview have assessed their zones as there are some cross-overs.” West Rolleston Primary will be situated on Ministry of Education land on the corner of Burnham School Road and Dunns Crossing Road, Rolleston. Mr McDermott said children who are
already attending Rolleston Primary and Clearview schools, and their siblings, will not be affected by the boundary changes and can keep going to the school they are currently enrolled in. The Rolleston Primary School enrolment zone options will go out for consultation as a publically notified document in the next few weeks, Mr McDermott said. West Rolleston School will initially open for students in Years 1 to 4 in 2016, but plans to take enrolments for students through to Year 8 by the following year. Mr McDermott said a fourth Rolleston primary school was planned for east Rolleston.

Tough start for anglers by Kent Caddick
It was a hardy bunch of anglers who took to the high country rivers and lakes of the Selwyn district for the opening of the season recently. November signals the opening of many high country lakes and rivers across the region, and for a large number of anglers the opening weekend is held in the same regard as the opening of duck shooting. “It’s about tradition, family and mates getting together, or individuals targeting their favourite fishing spots on the same weekend every year,” North Canterbury Fish & Game field officer, Steve Terry. Fish & Game held its annual opening day fishing competition in the Coleridge lakes area of Selwyn, which despite conditions, attracted over p Wayne Swift with his winning 2.93kg brown trout which he hooked at Lake Selfe 220 entrants. Success for sausage makers by Belinda Cullen-Reid
A combination of free-farmed pork and making sausages the old fashioned way has led to award winning success for Greendale couple Spencer and Jacqui Johnstone of Cressy Farm.
p Jacqui and Spencer Johnstone at their Greendale property where they raise free range pigs
Announced as Gold Medalists in the 2014 New Zealand Sausage Competition for their Spanish-style Chorizo Beersticks, the Johnstones are celebrating being acknowledged professionally for going the extra mile when making their smallgoods. “We were absolutely rapt,” Spencer said. “None of our sausages are made from pre-mixes. We use our own recipes. We have rows and rows of herbs and spices and everything is mixed in-house.” The Johnstones began their pork business 21 years ago. Spencer was tired of office life in the city and the couple were looking for something to do with their 16 hectare property at Greendale. “We had light land and no irrigation. Pigs seemed to be it. It was a big learning curve. We made some mistakes but learnt from them,” he said.
Where nothing is too much trouble.
Cressy Farm was established as a commercial entity with a difference. The Johnstones pride themselves on their farming practices which they said do not involve stalls or crates but instead see the sows living free range, with huts containing straw bedding and with space to graze, sunbathe and do what pigs do. In collaboration with butcher Brian Nieuwenhuize the couple began producing a range of smallgoods which they sell through farmer’s markets. Five years ago the Johnstone’s took over Euro Gourmet Meats butchery in Mairehau, Christchurch. “We were particularly tickled that the sausage that won was from a recipe Brian had developed himself,” Spencer said. Locally their goods can be sourced through the West Melton Market at St Paul’s Church grounds on Saturday mornings.

While the final numbers are still being counted organisers of the 2014 Hororata Highland Games say this year’s games have been the biggest yet. It is being estimated that over 8,000 visitors flowed through the gates of the Hororata Domain to attend the event. The games, now into their fourth year, also hosted 15 Scottish Clans, 70 stall holders, 600 corporate and VIP guests including Chieftain Sir Bob Parker and Joanna, Lady Parker. Event manager Cindy Driscoll said it had been the most amazing event she has had the privilege of being involved in. “A huge effort goes in from hundreds of volunteers to put on a professional, entertaining event for both visitors and competitors. “A lot of first-time visitors are surprised at the array of activities and entertainment on offer at the Games.
It really is a full family day out where people can get involved as well as enjoy watching the competitions,” Mrs Driscoll said. In addition to the 8,000 plus spectators 300 competitors took part in the event including 50 solo pipers and drummers, 89 highland dancers and 11 pipe bands. Records were broken with 200 primar y school-aged children competing in the Junior Warriors’ heavy events. The inaugural Oceania Heavyweight Championship saw the best line-up of heavy athletes in the Southern Hemisphere for many years with Australia’s Scott Martin taking out the title ahead of New Zealand’s Jono McFarlane.

Outbreak of strangles in Canterbury by Kent Caddick
A recent strangles outbreak in Canterbury has an equine vet urging owners not to turn a blind eye to their horses’ welfare. Reports from Gribbles Veterinary laboratories have confirmed three separate incidences of the disease on properties spread from south to north Canterbury. Another possible outbreak in Oamaru is being investigated. The last time strangles struck in Canterbury was in 2009, resulting in an unprecedented surge in demand for vaccinations.
Strangles is a highly infectious bacterial disease that presents with horses off their feed, high fever, runny nose and then swollen hot painful lymph nodes around the jaw that burst and drain pus. Bacteria can be shed from these discharges for two to four weeks, but sometimes much longer. While most affected horses recover, complications and even death can result. Mountainview Equine veterinarian Glenn Beeman said strangles is a particularly problematic disease because affected horses can recover and appear healthy but continue shedding the bacteria, putting other horses at risk. He said he was concerned this time around horse owners were taking an

owners these days, often travelling great distances to attend shows, events and studs, making transmission faster, further, and putting more horses at risk. “While the 2009 outbreak had been more concentrated in the racing community, the latest outbreak included a pony stud.

FA R M I N G “This hits close to home at the beginning of the show and eventing season, and with families who may be buying ponies over the summer, they can all be affected by the disease this time.” Zoetis NZ, manufacturers of strangles vaccines has reassured vets and horse owners that supplies are plentiful for both products. Mr Beeman said company trials show vaccinations had a high and proven rate of efficacy, typically delivering protection within a month after the initial shot and two subsequent booster shots are completed. “There is also of course the benefits of treating two diseases at once with a 2 in 1, with all horses at risk of tetanus — a disease you really do not want your horse to get.” Mr Beeman said while tying a horse up at events and avoiding contact with others may help avoid direct infection, indirect infection was still a possibility through people, gear and transport vehicles. “Good hygiene practices are therefore very important. Owners sending horses for breeding or participating in the show and event season can use vaccinations as another safeguard to keeping their horses well.”

Four steps to reduce strangles risk: Vaccinate — it’s effective insurance for anyone who transports horses and has horses in contact with other horses and will give peace of mind. Use your own gear when away from home — taking buckets, water and feed, and not sharing buckets. Practice good hygiene — wash hands between handling different horses, disinfect boots and clothing after each show or event. Quarantine new horses — monitor for signs of strangles and maintain for three weeks.

Former Solid Energy marketing manager Mark Williamson has been appointed chief executive officer of Agri One, a joint venture between Lincoln and Massey universities. Agri One was set up in 2011 with a focus on the two institutions working together to create new market opportunities. It promotes research-led education to assist farming and agri-food industries and facilitates professional development courses, joint research proposals, and seminars and symposia in the area. Mr Williamson is a former student of Lincoln University where he completed a Diploma of Wool Technology. He was raised on a farm in South Canterbury and farmed before entering the business world. Mr Williamson said one of the focusses of his new role was to develop the range of professional development opportunities available in the agri-sector and to establish Agri One and the two universities as one of the leading facilitator-providers. “The agri-food and agribusiness is probably the largest area of opportunity for growth in New Zealand’s future
business landscape. This role is an opportunity to be at the forefront of development of the industry working with the leading players and future visionaries.’’ Agri One’s Chair, Emeritus Professor Pat Walsh, said he was delighted by Mark Williamson’s appointment. “Mark has had a wealth of commercial experience from diverse sectors of the economy which he will bring to bear at Agri One. His background and expertise position him well to lead it through the next stage of the company’s development.’’ Mr Williamson has also been the general manager of manufacturing and expor ting business Foot Science International, the group marketing manager for Kathmandu, and filled various roles at the Wool Board and Wools of New Zealand in farm consulting, industry training, quality management, technology development and transfer, and international marketing.

Inspection, rehabilitation and repair of existing wells: With our comprehensive range of equipment and high resolution Down Hole Video Camera we can inspect and recommend further action on your existing well or indeed recognise if it has reached the end of its economic life. We can then discuss a solution with you for each case. Well repair system: We also have a well repair system available to give you a viable option to fix a broken or non-complying well, rather than drilling a new one. New pastures may be future threat by Kent Caddick
Breeding new fast-growing grass varieties that produce more seeds and are resistant to drought, pests, grazing and disease may inadvertently be creating the next generation of invasive weeds. That’s according to a research team at the Lincoln University’s Bio-Protection Research Centre. Philip Hulme, professor of plant biosecurity at Lincoln University and lead researcher at the research centre, said as the global demand for dairy and beef escalates, farmers are increasingly seeking ways to reap greater productivity from their pastures. “The problem is that in making grass varieties more robust, they are more prone to becoming a problem for the environment. For instance, new varieties can invade adjacent areas and spread across the landscape, or they can interbreed with existing invasive weeds. “Pasture species such as ryegrass and fescue may not strike people as major threats to the environment but they are regarded by the Department of Conservation as environmental weeds,” Professor Hulme said. The research team, which has published its findings in the latest
edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, has highlighted the need for government and agribusiness to ensure pasture plants are of low risk to the environment. “Pasture is big business in New Zealand and a large part of our economic success arises from agribusiness developing ever more productive or persistent varieties. As a result there is a clear conflict between economic and p Professor Philip Hulme of the Bio-Protection Research Centre conservation outcomes.” at Lincoln University is warning some new grass varieties Professor Hulme said may become the weeds of the future agribusinesses do not have to assess the environmental risk especially in the face of drought, that of the new grass varieties they develop, might pose the greatest future risk.” The but some consideration in this area researchers have made four biosecurity might prevent the future spread of recommendations for government, industry and researchers: governments environmental weeds. “It is probably those varieties being developed for greater persistence,

are about being proactive so farmers have confidence in their systems meeting regulations. “Farmers will receive practical solutions to take home and implement on their farm,” he said. Four sessions will be held throughout the day focussing on nutrient management, research and development, soils, effluent and irrigation, and land management. The nutrient management session will focus on the nutrient budget as a tool for understanding nitrogen movement through a farm system and the key drivers for nutrient loss. Options to reduce nutrient loss and the financial implications of changing systems will be covered by DairyNZ scientist Dawn Dally during the research and development session. Paddock sessions will include understanding soil type and moisture levels, managing effluent and irrigator systems efficiently, the benefits of onfarm planting, waste management and identifying high-risk areas on-farm. Certified professionals will be available on the day to provide one-onone advice to farmers.

DairyNZ’s Sustainable Milk Plan has been approved by Environment Canterbury as a farm environment plan that meets the regulatory requirements of the Land and Water Regional Plan. GARDENING
Viticulture at home by Belinda Cullen-Reid
If you have romantic dreams of owning your own vineyard but can’t quite afford to up and relocate to your property in Bordeaux just yet, then why not try putting a few vines in your garden at home. While many a farm house had a grape vine clinging to it, serious grape growing is reasonably new to the South Island with wine production not starting to take off until the 1980s. A quick look around the Selwyn district now reveals a good number of grape growers and wine producers, including award winning viticulturists. If you want to have a go at setting up your own mini vineyard at home, find a sunny sheltered spot with good soil drainage and begin planting around now, once the frosts are over. Choose a grape variety that is suitable for the area you live in. Your local garden centre should know the most appropriate varieties. Start small, just a few plants and dig holes around two to three metres apart. The holes need to be slightly bigger than the container you purchased your plants in. You want to add a little compost to the holes and some water. Plant the grape plants and sprinkle a little slow release fertiliser around the edge of the hole, rather than the actual base of the plant. Don’t let your plants get too dry, giving them a regular watering. A drip watering system is ideal. Mulch around the area of the plant, but keep the trunk of the vine free. Mulch will help the vine retain moisture. The vines will need something to grow on, to support them when they are rich with fruit. Some people plant them next to a pergola, trellising or a veranda area. Others make a more formal vineyard with posts and strained wire to support the vines. Vines can live for a long time, perhaps 50 to 100 years so make sure you build solid supports. As the vines grow they should be pruned and encouraged to grow around
their supports. Tie them to their supports to minimise wind damage. Grapes are ready to harvest in autumn. Each winter, much like rose plants, the vines should be pruned while the plants are dormant. Keep the ground around the vines weed-free. Patience is required as it takes a grape vine five or six years to really get going. Although your vine will produce grapes before this it is best to cut most

Top Crop - Tomatoes Tomatoes are a crop that is hard to match for performance, flavour and versatility. All that is required is position in full sun, a well dug over and fertile soil, or a spot for a pot or container, tomato fertiliser and water. Shelter and support from strong winds will ensure your plant will be able to hold onto its crop and keep it up off the ground.

A successful crop needs fertile well-prepared soil to provide the foundation for a healthy crop. Do the ground work before planting; blend in Sheep Pellets or Rooster Booster into the soil. When growing in tubs or planters, fill with Tomato Growing Mix, this ensures tomatoes get off to the best possible start. Tomatoes enjoy plenty of fertiliser, but be careful not to load the soil up with too much nitrogen. Look for Tomato Food, which is high in Potash (Potassium - K). Potassium is essential for enhancing fruit, flower production, and enhances the “juiciness” of the fruit. Water plant food in well after application. When planting, we recommend to either do it in the morning or evening when it’s cooler. This makes it less stressful for the plant, and increases your chances of a successful planting. Dig a bigger hole than the plants root ball, plant, and then firm the soil or potting mix firmly around the plant. Tomatoes need staking to support the heavy stems of fruit. The trick is to put the stake in the ground or soil before planting. Water every second or third day, rather than a little every day. This encourages the roots to bury themselves deeper into the soil. Remove laterals as they appearthese are the side branches that appear above the leaves on the main trunk of the plant - they can limit the cropping ability of the plant if left on. Tie the main stem to the stake as it gets taller to protect from wind.

14 November 12 - 2014 THE RECORD ADVERTORIAL
Service and satisfaction keys to success There’s not much in the 34 years he’s been a plumber that Andy Shaw, director of Laser Plumbing Christchurch West in Rolleston, hasn’t seen. While he doesn’t pick up the tools as much as he used to Andy is the experience behind Laser Plumbing and both his staff and customers appreciate that. “You are always learning in this business and I am fortunate I have a great team around me which helps us keep in the forefront of the industry,” Andy says. Laser Plumbing Christchurch West has seven tradesmen including apprentices to ensure the job is done properly and four office staff to make sure the business is running smoothly.” One of the keys to building up his qualified team is that Andy is actively involved in training new team members and apprentices. “This is really the way you want to go if you want to develop a successful business and the young apprentices are eager to learn. “Too many businesses are happy to poach staff instead of training their own but when you have a team that has grown up with the business the work place is a happier environment and that leads to strong relations with our customers.” Andy says many of his regular clients have a favourite staff member and they are in some cases happy to wait until they get their man. Customer satisfaction is high on Andy Shaw’s list of priorities. “Too often people feel let down by tradies and I am there to make sure that doesn’t happen with our customers. “What people really want is that the job is done right. “While cost can be a factor, if the job is done right first time, and with the knowledge
p Laser Plumbing Christchurch West director Andy Shaw, left, consults with staff members Josh MacLean (centre) and Callum Janmaat over an upcoming job
the work will stand up to the test of time, most of our clients don’t mind paying a fair price to achieve that outcome.” Laser Plumbing was originally based in Sockburn but Andy soon realised with the amount of business they were doing in Selwyn the move to Rolleston, where he had done his apprenticeship, made sense.
“Sockburn was handy to Christchurch but with 60% of our business in Rolleston and surrounding areas it was not ideal for us.” Andy likes to monitor and manage most jobs so with a large segment of his company’s work in and around Rolleston the move to base the business in Selwyn’s biggest town made sense.
Laser Plumbing Christchurch West is now set to move into its new purpose-built office, with showroom and workshop, in Jones Road, adjacent to Jones Road vets. Until the new building is complete Laser Plumbing is currently operating out of temporary premises in Jones Road. “We are here for the long haul,” Andy says.
