Peter Richardson, whose grandfather is a Kiwi, said he and wife Michelle came to New Zealand to celebrate 20 years of marriage and spent a week in Hanmer Springs. “After that we came to New Zealand regularly for a holiday and Michelle said I changed as a person and was more relaxed when we visited here.” Michelle said that as soon as they returned to Brisbane Peter would get tense and start stressing out. Peter said they were blown away by how friendly everyone in New Zealand is. “I really don’t understand why so many Kiwis head to Australia, it is so not like New Zealand where you can walk down the street and everyone says hello. If you try that in Australia you are likely to be met with aggression.” So the Richardsons, who owned a construction business, decided to make the move across the Tasman more permanent. “I had always wanted to own a pub so we began looking over here,” said Peter, who has also been involved in restaurants and a family motel business in Australia. “We travelled all around the North Island before coming down to the South Island and were looking at a business in Sheffield when we heard about the Springfield Hotel so thought we would pop down the road and take a look.”

p The new hosts of the Springfield Hotel are, from left: Wade, Michelle (holding family dog Marlon), Peter and Jake Richardson

The pub had closed down earlier this year after former leasee Malcolm West’s company was placed into liquidation, while the property on 2.5 acres and including the backpackers’ accommodation was owned by Queen Street Backpackers. The Richardsons successfully negotiated with Queen St Backpackers to purchase the property and while they

intend to build a family home at the rear of the hotel and reopen the backpackers their first priority has been getting the pub open. So, with his two sons, Wade (22) and Jake (16), Peter has got stuck into refurbishing the hotel, while Michelle and a family friend are sorting out the supply and financial sides of the business. continued on pg 5 …

Following much anticipation a new senior playground has been installed at West Melton Primary School.

A desire to see students achieve to their full potential has seen Darfield resident Kathy Stirrup volunteer for the last seven years at her local high school to help students with reading and writing difficulties.

p Celebrating the arrival of the new senior playground are Year 5 students William Brown, left, and Mitchel McKenzie. Further funds are required to finish off the playground, including installing bark and surrounds to make the area safe

The Extreme Fitness playground built by Playground Centre in Wanganui is designed for students from Year 5 to 8 at a cost of $81,000. “At West Melton we believe in educating the whole child. The senior playground introduces the risk element,” Deputy Principal Kim Busch said. The school’s fund raising efforts included Duathalon Fun’d Raiser held recently in conjunction with Gillman Wheelans Limited, the developers of the Preston Downs subdivision in West

Melton. There were over 100 entries in the duathalon which saw parents and children team up and take on different parts of the event. Over $3,200 was raised. This was the first time the event had been held. Ms Busch said she hoped the duathalon would become an annual event. More fundraising is required before the playground can be completed and open for use. ¢

In her role at Darfield High School Kathy visits the school at different times throughout the year to assist students during tests and exams. “Some students struggle to read. Some children’s handwriting is so bad that we do that for them. It gives them a fair chance like everyone else,” Kathy says. A reader-writer is someone who sits with struggling students during their assessments and helps them by reading out the questions and writing down the answers. “It’s very worthwhile and children really appreciate it. It’s just good to help someone.” In a separate room from students Kathy will sit with a student who has been assessed as in need of assistance. She is not allowed to give the students any extra information or assistance. Training for the role simply involves sitting in on several sessions with an experienced reader-writer. “It doesn’t have to be a big job. You can just do it as much or as

For the Record..... Our appalling road safety record u by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

Far too many people are dying and being injured on roads in the Selwyn district. The very morning I sat down to write this column I heard on the news of a fatal crash on Main South Road the previous night. The weekend before that I had driven past a nasty accident on the road between Darfield and Sheffield.

www.national.org.nz

Less than two weeks earlier, there was another fatal crash on Weedons Ross Road, south of West Melton. I wish that I could say that this was unusual but unfortunately it is not. I do not know whether alcohol was involved in any of the above crashes. However, the reality is that high speeds on rural roads, darkness and alcohol all make for a potentially lethal combination.

That is why I am fully in support of the recently announced move to lower the legal blood alcohol limit from 80 to 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood for drivers aged over 20. Data collected over a two-year period showed 53 drivers were involved in fatal and serious injury crashes with blood alcohol readings of 51–80mg per 100ml of blood. These crashes resulted in five fatalities and 62 serious injuries. Ministry of Transport analysis suggests at least two to five lives will be saved and between 33 and 102 injuries

prevented each year as a result of the lower limit. Benefits could be significantly higher if the changes also alter the behaviour of drivers who drive above the 80mg limit. Anything that can help prevent our mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, friends or workmates from becoming the next road crash statistics has to be a good idea. ¢

Balancing the books u by David Ward, Selwyn District Council CEO

Council has recently adopted its 2013 Annual Plan and although I arrived shortly after the report was adopted, this annual report is one of the best I have seen both in terms of achievement and a financial performance. As we know, this financial year has been a period of unprecedented growth in our district. This growth is reflected in council’s annual report. Our expenditure for the year was $67.5M — lower than

our budgeted figure of $71.9M, largely because our financing costs were $3.9M lower than budgeted. The principal reason for these lower financing costs was council’s strong, positive cash-flow which helped fund parts of our capital expenditure programme, keeping our borrowings of $90.0M considerably lower than our budgeted borrowings of $148.6M. During the year, despite significant investment in capital projects, council’s net borrowing only increased by $6M. Our income for the year was $104.1M, compared with a budget of $78.7M. Key contributors to this result included receipt of a special dividend of $11M from Selwyn Investment Holdings Limited, development contributions income was $6.8M above budget, the value of vested assets from subdivisions was $3M higher than budget and fees

and charges from consents were $1.9M ahead of budget. The net value of council’s assets increased by $57M to $1.12 billion. During the year council maintained 2,397km of roads, provided rubbish and recycling services to over 12,000 households, maintained 154 reserves and playgrounds, opened the new Selwyn Aquatic Centre and issued a record number of building and resource consents, with 99% of resource consents being issued within the statutory time frame of 20 working days. Obviously the high level of growth puts pressure on council to maintain, and continue to enhance, the services we provide. The next key plan that council will be preparing is our draft 2014/15 Annual Plan. We look forward to receiving your input into this document to ensure that we continue to deliver high quality services for our community in the future. ¢

Guest speaker Nick Walls, who survived being trapped for 10 hours in the Pyne Gould Corporation building collapse following the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake advised the students on how to approach this new phase in their lives. “The full freedoms of the adult world await you. You must tread carefully. With the choices you make you must accept the consequences.” Mr Walls was seriously injured in the earthquake and spent six weeks in hospital recovering. He said that this was just one aspect of his life so far. “We must take the opportunity to seek challenges. I swore that day wouldn’t be my last.” Other speeches on the night included Marty Gameson, head of the school’s Board of Trustees who acknowledged the special character of the rural school, and Principal James Morris who talked about the value of education. Year 13 students were presented with a spray of flowers and their future plans were announced.

You wouldn’t get that in Australia.” The Richardsons hope to have the hotel open for business before the end of the month and are asking locals to help them return some character to the pub. “Initially it will be a bit sterile but that is because we want the local community to help us build the atmosphere by bringing in

Malvern Community Board welcomes new members u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

The first meeting of the new Malvern Community Board members saw two rookies take their place around the aboard table. In the recent local body election Kerry Pauling of Sheffield unseated incumbent Bill Frost in the Tawera subdivision, while Darfield’s Judith Pascoe was elected unopposed in the Hawkins subdivision. The pair joined returning board members Jenny Gallagher, Bob Mugford and Mary Ireland. For the past 18 years Mr Pauling, a former police officer, and his wife Liz have lived on a mixed sheep and cropping farm. “Before joining the police I was shearing sheep for 10 years in the Malvern area and living in Sheffield then Coalgate. We have lived in Malvern area for a total of 28 years and Liz was born and bred in Sheffield,” Mr Pauling said. Mr Pauling has been heavily involved with community groups including the Coalgate fire brigade, playing and coaching rugby at Sheffield, coaching rugby at Darfield and the Malvern A&P Association. “I stood for the community board because there has not been anyone living and working in our area on the board for several years and I want to provide a voice for our people at council level. “I am looking forward to working with our township committees to

Committee and she also helps organise Country Christmas in the Park in Darfield. Mrs Pascoe sees her role on the community board as a natural progression from her current community involvement. She believes community boards have much to offer their communities. “[I look forward to] working together as a team within the board and with the Selwyn Central Community Board, council and staff to ensure that individuals are listened to and issues addressed.” ¢

Governor-General praises community involvement

Organisers of the third annual Hororata Highland Games are delighted with how this year’s event ran despite a slight drop in numbers attending. “We think the weather played a part in the turn out this year with around 6,000 through the gates while there were over 9,000 last year,” event organiser Claire Cowles said. “However, everything went extremely smoothly and some of the new events we introduced this year proved really popular.”

Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae was this year’s Games Chieftain and Ms Cowles said he was extremely complimentary about the event particularly praising the community input and volunteer involvement. “We have a great bunch of volunteers who help us run the event, who give their time for up to three days and it would be

extremely hard to put on a show of this magnitude without their help.” As well as the traditional pipe bands, Scottish dancing, tug-of-war and the Heavies event, which includes caber toss, stone-put and sheaf toss, new events this year included a Junior Warriors’ competition, archery and a Hororata pie-eating competition.

“We were delighted at the way the new events proved popular, particularly the pie eating which proved a crowd favourite, and we are always looking at ways to make the event bigger and better. All we really need now is a sun guarantee.” ¢

It is that time of year again when we fling wide the doors, enjoy the warm spring air and feel inspired to have a freshen up. Winter has been and gone and now we see our house in a completely different light. Colour trends change and just as for one’s clothing at times our houses need a makeover too. Here are a few good ways to start the process. If you have a neutral interior try adding colourful accents of your favourite hue. If you are not confident mixing colours start with one or alternatively use the dominant tones of a colour from a cushion or fabric you adore. Options here could be painting a feature wall, adding cushions, painting a piece of cabinetry or chair, adding

a bold lampshade or some bold new accessories and objects of desire. The colour will instantly lift the room — and your mood. Got some favourite pieces of furniture? Just because they are old and worn does not mean they are past their prime. Punch new life into an old favourite by getting it re-upholstered in a trendy new fabric, or painting it a bright colour so it becomes the accent in a room. Change the handles or knobs, add key tassles to the existing handles, or change the legs. These changes will definitely alter the style and they are such easy makeovers to do. Fresh flowers and plants are always admired and often overlooked as a decorating solution. Bunches of colourful, fragrant and textural flowers and plants really do

freshen the room. Always match them to your overall interior theme and style. Pastels for traditional homes, quirky leafy palms are best suited to coastal residences and big bold coloured flowers make a statement in a modern home. If you have a passion about a theme, colour or culture, or maybe you have gathered up small collections of items, why not surround yourself with this ‘Dream’ theme. Decorating to a theme is fun. New Haven Decorators & Construction now has a committed and talented team of staff and contractors and together are growing to now include being a part of the Christchurch rebuild. Hence the new logo change to “New Haven Rebuild”. From foundation cracks to building and decorating we can now fully repair and or decorate your home. The joy of the New Haven philosophy of “the friendly professional approach with integrity”. We now specialise in helping the people in Christchurch with the “Opt Out” option for repairing their homes. This way we can help you get your home repaired sooner rather than later.

the style, design, texture and colour. The rug will need to work with the overall colour theme of a room, and the pattern or design should also be tempered in this way. Avoid rugs in traffic ways or on slippery surfaces where possible, unless they are well adhered to the surface they sit on. Finally a good clean of all surfaces works magic — open all the windows and doors, air out the entire house, give the drapes and blinds a good hoover off,

Another idea is a shabby chic theme, most suited to all pastel colour shades and of course the American Hamptons’ demand stripes in shades of blue, taupe and white. Clutter can rule a house, and too much of anything can ruin the interior focus. No matter what it is, a room crammed with too many items is overcrowding and the space just looks a mess. There are so many options for storage should more actually be required, for example: baskets, shelving units, fancy decorative boxes etc. Be really ruthless and if you cannot spend a day clearing clutter, try completing a small area each week. A bedroom is a place to relax, unwind, rest and sleep, and yet so many times we see them as dull, cluttered, tatty and in fact depressing. Never underestimate the power of new bed linen. A new duvet cover and some clean feature pillow cases can transform a room instantly and at minimal cost. If you must store items under the bed make sure you have a valance to hide them and if you habitually leave clothes on the floor, invest in a chair or bench seat. At least your clothes will love the opportunity to breathe more easily. A home filled with natural light always looks fresh. Maximise the sunlight with light coloured window coverings, walls and

Help us keep the

power on Power outages following September’s severe wind storm were primarily due to trees and branches coming into contact with overhead lines and poles. As trees on private land are the responsibility of the land owner, we need your help to reduce the impact of future storms on our electricity network and on you and your neighbours.

How can you help? If you have a tree that could impact power lines, please think about your local community’s health and wellbeing. A power outage caused by a tree may not just affect you – it may impact many people, including those with health issues. Consider replacing tall trees near power lines with a lower growing species. If tree removal isn’t possible, as a minimum, make sure branches are kept well away from overhead lines and poles. If planting, think carefully about the type of tree you put near overhead lines – a little shrub can become a giant in a few years’ time. Call Orion for advice on suitable trees. Be safe The wind storm has left many trees weakened or damaged and in some cases leaning on other trees. If you need to remove, or prune, a tree or branch near overhead lines, please contact us. We will refer you to contractors experienced in tree trimming around power lines. For more information see our website oriongroup.co.nz or call us on 0800 363 9898. Come and see our display at the Courtenay A & P Show, Kirwee on Saturday 23 November. Learn the do’s and don’ts of trees near power lines.

Reduce the risk of power cuts • CUT DOWN – consider removing tall trees that could fall through power lines. • TRIM EARLY – if you can’t cut down the tree, keep branches at least 2.5m away from low voltage lines or at least 4m from high voltage lines. Ideally further. • BE SAFE – please call Orion on 0800 363 9898 for a list of qualified contractors. • PLANT WISELY – ask us about safe planting distances and power line friendly trees and shrubs.

Doggie paddling at the swim spa Chris and June Blackwood wanted to help their ageing German Shepard’s arthritis so they decided to build a special swimming pool just for dogs. Unfortunately their dog passed away before the pool was finished, but for the past five years other dogs in the community have enjoyed the benefits of the Dog Swim Spa. The facility is based in the Templeton area and includes a fenced area for dogs to run on arrival, an indoor six-metre heated pool with jets installed at one end, and a shower area to wash the dogs after their swim. All breeds and sizes of dogs attend the swim spa and for a number of reasons. For dogs recovering from illness or surgery the swim spa provides a controlled environment to exercise and a low impact form of exercise which is easy on joints. Swimming can help with hip, leg and muscle problems, and increase the strength of tendons and ligaments in dogs with joint problems. The dogs get a wonderful aerobic workout which improves fitness and stamina. This is very helpful for overweight dogs. The warm controlled environment is also beneficial to older dogs as the exercise is gentle on their ageing bodies. The dogs are swum by an experienced handler named Lou who as an ex shepherd has run her own team of dogs for many years and is experienced at reading and handling different dogs.

“I do this job because I love dogs. You develop a real relationship with the. It’s fun for them so they don’t realise they are getting rehabilitated,” Lou says. Monty’s story Monty is a Springer Spaniel who lives with his owner Lynne in Christchurch. Monty can’t wait for swimming days. When their car pulls up you can hear Monty yapping with excitement. Lynne leads him into the fenced area and lets him off the leash. He races around the enclosure and has a quick pit stop before heading towards the swimming pool shed. He sits at the door and yaps to be let in. Lou opens the door and Monty races around the pool, up the ramp and waits for Lou to begin the session. His enthusiasm is overflowing. Lou is an expert at dealing with energetic dogs. She calmly leads him through his exercises. He loves chasing the tennis ball and is rewarded with treats when he does his exercise. Monty is only five years old, but has already had to have two joint operations. Lynne says that she has noticed a lot of improvement in Monty’s health since attending the swim spa. “It takes the pressure off his joints. He doesn’t limp anymore and he loves it as well,” she said.

Our pool is designed so we do not need to get in with your dog. This way we have more control and we don’t encroach into “their space”. We have had several visiting hydro therapists tell us this is a great concept and a great canine facility. This is an owner ‘hands on’ concept so bring old clothes and be prepared to get wet! The first session is only $25.00 so you can be sure your dog enjoys it. Swimming is a low impact form of exercise, so it is easy on the joints.
