As well as bringing their pets along, the children entered a variety of creative categories, from the traditional sand saucer to an arrangement in a bottle, all in line with term’s water theme. Pet Day organiser Fiona Banks said for the children who didn’t have pets, they brought along decorated bikes. “We had a great crowd of families and friends come along and view the items on display and enjoy the day with us,” she said. “We were lucky to have Meg Morten come along to the school prior to pet day to help us with some tips and tricks for floral arranging, which was enjoyed by the whole school. “Our traditional cake auction, where the ‘man’ of each household enters a cake, was a great success with Grant MacIlroy from Farmland kindly coming along to auction these entries.” A special part of the day was the opening of Greenwood Grove which is an orchard dedicated to the school’s caretaker Sue Greenwood, who sadly

 There was a good turnout to Prebbleton’s first monthly market

Organisers were happy with the number of people who came to the market, which was held in the grounds surrounding the Prebbleton Community Cottage, on the corner of Blakes and Springs roads. Market coordinator Shelley Bakker said stallholders came from Christchurch, Selwyn and the Prebbleton community, and for a first market we were delighted with the attendance. “The aim of the Prebbleton Community Market is to provide Prebbleton with a regular market and also a place for the community to meet and mingle, with stalls providing goods for all ages,” she said. “Community groups are encouraged to have a stall at the market and there

may be financial assistance from the Prebbleton Community Association to maximise profit for fundraising. “The plans for future markets include having more food options, such as a sausage sizzle, which community groups are encouraged to run.” She said there were also plenty of places available for additional stalls. The market is being held on the first Sunday of each month from noon to 3pm with the exception of January 1. Shelley Bakker, market coordinator, can be contacted through the market’s Facebook page Prebbleton Community Market, by email prebbletoncommunitymarket@gmail. com or phone 021 405 792. 

When a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Kaikoura two minutes after midnight on November 14, it was a reminder of the massive tremors which rocked Christchurch in the recent past.

 Hororata’s Brogan Baldwin will be a recruiter’s dream should she pursue her goal of joining the armed forces

She said her involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Awards came about by chance. The Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Awards, which originated in the United Kingdom, aim to encourage and motivate young people over the age of 14 to become involved in a balanced programme of voluntary, self-development activities. “I had a friend who was doing the gold award and had to go on a trek, and she rang me to ask if I would go camping with her for her award. “So I roped my brother into it and off we went, even though he had just returned from a trip to Africa.” Brogan said she told her Hororata Scout group leader Dave Grafton about her involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards and he encouraged her to do it for herself. “So the same tramp I went on with my friend was the start of it, helping me to gain a bronze award.” She then completed the Duke of Edinburgh silver award before taking on the challenge of the gold award. “There’s a lot more planning and fundraising needed for the gold award, including a residential section where you have to spend five days in an unfamiliar environment and help the local community.” For that she chose

to go to Borneo. “We tramped into a remote area of the island and helped construct a sporting court for a local village, and that was a real highlight as I love tramping. “Tramping was one of the attractions of being a Venturer Scout, packing up and going somewhere.” With these achievements behind her, and one more year left at high school, Brogan is looking to use those skills that she has learnt through Scouting and the Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Awards, in future employment. “I am kind of hoping the skills I have learnt will help me to get into the armed forces, but I am not sure whether that would be the army, navy or air force, I haven’t made up my mind yet. “Mum’s not that keen on me going into the forces but I’ll bring her around.” She said one of the attractions of a career in the forces is that you get paid to learn and you get to travel. As well as having the support of her family, Brogan puts a lot of her success down to the support she has received from her Scout leader Dave Grafton. “He’s a great guy and if you want to get something done he will get you through it. “He’s not into spoon feeding you but will help to clear a path for you.” 

Geological factors and distance meant that this disaster, which most dramatically affected the Culverden, Kaikoura and Hanmer Springs areas, was far less damaging to the Christchurch area than the ‘big ones’ — though frayed nerves and property damage followed in its wake in the early hours of the morning. While the scenes of devastation from further north cannot help but remind locals of the 2010 quake, this time around emergency fire services in West Melton waited for a call to action which thankfully never came. A member of the local volunteer fire brigade spoke of the relief, that this time around, possessions may have been damaged but the worst did not occur. “We were waiting for the fire alarm to go off, but it didn’t — that’s a good

result. Some of us may have got almost used to events like these in Canterbury, but this is a good reminder to have your emergency kit ready, know your civil defence procedures, and make sure your family are ready just in case.” Communications, especially internet and mobile phone reception — have been in chaos following the quake, but vital ‘hard’ infrastructure, recently rebuilt and reinforced, stood up to the tremor well. Water and power remain on, while crews battle in the north to reopen roads and reconnect towns to aid and assistance. The community is rallying around victims who have lost loved ones or have been made homeless by the quake, one of a swarm which was felt as far away as Whangarei in the far north. 

Helping Selwyn youth deal with anxiety and depression will be the focus of a series of workshops around the district in coming weeks. The Rural Canterbury Primary Health Organisation (RCPHO) is working in with the Selwyn Parenting Network and the Mental Health Education and Resource Centre to hold the community education workshops around different aspects of mental health and wellbeing, starting this week in Lincoln. RCPHO Community Connector for the Selwyn and Ashburton districts, Brenna Russell, said she works with isolated residents to make sure that they are well connected with local community groups, social networks and other support services. She said she works in close contact with many organisations in the Selwyn district, and it is through her strong association with Jacky Muirsmeath of the Selwyn Parenting Network, that this collaborative partnership was formed. “The first of these workshops will be Anxiety and Depression in Youth and will be held in Lincoln at the Events Centre on Wednesday and Darfield at the Community Recreation Centre on November 23. “The content of these information evenings will cover the triggers and effects of anxiety and depression in young people, the stages they go through and communication styles as well as strategies and

A new photography group in West Melton has recently been formed to raise the profile of photographic art in Selwyn.

A last minute rush to be the last angler eligible to enter the 2016 Lake Coleridge Fishing Competition has paid off for angler Nick Moody.

 West Melton’s Sara-Jane Ludemann is one of the driving forces among a group of photographers looking to encourage others into photography

The aim of the group is to bring photographers of Selwyn together, further skills and techniques as well as holding exhibitions and workshops. Group spokesperson Sara-Jane Ludemann said they are also looking to establish a photographers’ gallery, possibly in West Melton, where they will be able to offer workshops for every level of photography. “We are at a grass roots level, but see the need for photographers to be able to meet, talk and learn,” Ms Ludemann said. “We will start at the bottom and

work our way up to great things. Everyone is welcome, both professional and amateur photographers, and it doesn’t matter what camera people have, just a love of photography is needed.” Ms Ludemann said people can find photographic images anywhere. “It’s simply a matter of noticing things and organising them. You just have to care about what’s around you.” For photographers of any level who want to be involved contact Sara-Jane Ludemann on 028 406 6274 or email: mennadule@gmail.com. 

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

 by Andy Bryenton

Ford has announced a massive change to their popular mid-sized Kuga SUV this month, but it’s not the addition of a new trend variant or the cosmetic styling differences which have got people talking. It’s the fact that the little brother of the big Everest — and the bigger sibling of the zippy EcoSport — is now called the Escape. Not only is this a badge remembered fondly by Ford fans — the original was a short wheelbase, three-litre V6 from the early 2000s — it’s also a broad hint that the whole Ford SUV family will soon share a common first initial. From the seven seater Everest down to the highly anticipated Edge — replacement for the Ford Territory — the size scale would then proceed to the Escape, and on to the EcoSport. It’s a full house of ‘E’ named vehicles, but is this deliberate marketing from the Michigan automaker? Ford New Zealand is keeping it all under wraps, but there’s a temptation to guess. More interesting in the short term is the suite of upgrades available to those who would until just last week have been looking at a Kuga. Now their horizon has been expanded with new options in the Escape range, starting with a selection of engines in the Trend variation — from a 1.5-litre ecoboost through to a two-litre turbo diesel. Paddle shifters proliferate across the range too, with the ability to manually engage gears from

RANGER. LOOKS, DOES, IS

THE BUSINESS.

 Ford’s new Escape slots into a family of SUVs calculated to meet a number of market niches

the steering wheel now common to all Escapes. Another new development is the arrival of Sync III, the upgraded and even more function-packed infotainment suite which Ford has also rolled out for their 2017 Ranger ute, among others. With a bigger 8-inch touchscreen and voice-activated search commands, Sync III has been developed to work in harmony with Apple and Android in-car apps. It’s also a single hub for climate control, navigation, music and more, doing away with 747-cockpit-like ranks of buttons and dials. Add in perpendicular and parallel park assist, a voluminous interior and

a clever stop-go system, which saves fuel by deactivating the engine at traffic lights during urban driving, and the Escape adds up to more than just a simple cosmetic facelift for the outgoing Kuga name badge. That being said, the distinctive Ford stance and look are now there in spades, with a cheeky ‘expression’ similar to that of the Fiesta ST — and of those other ‘E’ named SUVs in the Ford stable. Only time will tell if the name ‘Edge’ is truly set to join the EcoSport, Everest and new Escape. But it’s ample proof that Ford know how to keep an eager public guessing. 

KIRWEE

 by Andy Bryenton

Since the first Silver Fern Rally roared into life in 1969, this motoring event has been an arena for fierce rivalries, skilful driving and classic automobiles taken to the limits of engineering. But today, as the 2016 series gets set to hit the grid, it’s also about giving back to the community. That spirit is exemplified by a very special pre-race event happening on November 24, just before racing begins on Sunday 27th. Seeing the opportunity to do even more for the complex of children’s charities supported by the rally — a list which includes Ronald McDonald House, Cure Kids, Kidney Kids and Make a Wish Foundation — local sponsors have arranged a meet and greet with one of the stars of the competition. Canterbury Timber and Hardware, Silver Fern Products and Sheds NZ are all proud to be involved with both the bighearted cause behind the rally — and with the high-octane action set to unfold on the special stages of the south. But Sheds NZ boss Kevin Barron saw a way to boost support for those worthy kids’ charities even further — he’s the uncle of international rally driver Warren Briggs, the man behind the wheel of an iconic 1965 Ford Mustang classic in the race series. As a man with the means and the motive to do good in his community, Kevin brought together the ex-McLaren Racing fabricator, international rally star

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

There was a time when 100 horsepower was considered a peppy amount of ponies under the hood for a sports car. When your two-seater, low-slung roadster was light enough, the magical triple digits were sure to send sales and performance reviews into the stratosphere. These days, in the age of the twin-turbo, ecoboost, high compression future, 100 horsepower seems wheezy and outdated. Until you pop it into an ultra-lightweight side-by-side. That’s just what polaris have done with their new General, a compact and rugged little machine which draws on the DNA of two very different parents. Look at it in a certain light and you’ll see the heritage of the Polaris Ranger, a no-nonsense lugger which has become a bit of a fixture on Kiwi farms thanks to its torque, go-anywhere ride, and an undemanding price. Squint just right though and you’ll clearly see the imprint of the fire-breathing RZR — the machine which so recently burned up the off-road scene in New Zealand as the ORANZ series rolled through. It’s a tough call having one foot in both camps, but the General does so with class. It’s almost tempting to think that the name refers not to the ‘top brass’ rank in the military, but to that old handle for the armed forces’ jeep — itself a contraction of the term ‘general purpose’. That’s because 100hp in a machine this nimble and small, with a rock-steady footing, feels like a rocket

pack. The General boasts a whole chestful of medals for first place, too — fastest time to 40mph on any terrain, quickest engaging AWD, most torque in its class — but the real kicker is 500 kilos of loadout to play with. That means the ability to really use this crossover for work and play, taking it to the trail, the forest or the beach after a hard day of work. Polaris are quick to point out that this may very well mean twice the time out of the shed, and they’ve built the General

tough enough to cope. So that the human component won’t wear out easily, the General’s cockpit feels more like that of a road-going car than a stripped-out off-roader. All in all, it’s a machine that walks a fine line, like the first SUVs did. While there were naysayers when the original Land Cruisers and Land Rovers left the mud for the tarmac, we all know how that worked out. The General may just be the ticket for those who would love both a working machine and a racer, delivering reliability as well as thrills. 

Paying special attention to specialist crops  by Andy Bryenton

The heavy hitters of the tractor world are all fine and good in the pen field — where massive horsepower is needed to pull and power a bigger, more powerful generation of implements. But with the continued rise of specialist crop automation, tractors designed just for the narrow rows of orchards and vineyards — or for the more complex machinery needed to tend them — are making a big impact. Fruit, wine and juice cultivation is big business, both here and around the world, and that’s been recognised in Europe this year with a new festival to complement the immense Agritechnica. Not to be outdone, the conveners of this event have chosen the name Intervitis Interfructa Hortitechnica — hard to put on a T-shirt, but covering all aspects of a burgeoning trade. The star of this year’s show was the Fendt Vario 200 series, a small tractor with big potential in the orchard or vineyard. This Vario model has been designed with many clever features just for the demanding work of tending the vines. The key to its performance is in its name — a stepless variable transmission which allows smooth, steady power delivery at all speeds on all kinds of slopes and surfaces. The chairman of Fendt’s board, Peter-Josef Paffen — who displayed more than 400 square metres of fresh metal at Intervitis 2016 — puts it best. “Wine, fruit and hops farmers, in particular, are important customers for us, because they often must manage their machines in difficult terrain, for

example, on steep slopes up to 50 per cent. Here Vario technology is clearly superior to conventional drive concepts.” Add in twin separate hydraulic circuits to handle the sometimes complex implements needed for orchard and vineyard work, and a cab designed to support operator comfort over long days

in the field, and it’s easy to see why more than 12,000 of these machines have been sold. The ability to fit all manner of wheel and tyre arrangements to the Vario 200 platform also means versatility of use, with those narrow spaces and ‘stilt walking’ over rows no challenge. 

Science the key to greenhouse solution  by Andy Bryenton

Greenhouse gas emissions have been a contentious global political issue and it’s not just highly industrialised nations at the forefront of the debate. In New Zealand, it’s not our auto fleet or our factories which are of concern — it’s our livestock. However, new research spearheaded by James Cook University in Australia

The right match of seed to soil We understand that no two farming operations are the same. That’s why we specialise in offering expert advice about the right product for your farm. has revealed an unlikely ally in the battle to reduce methane ‘exhaust’ from herds worldwide. It’s a plant called Asparagopsis Taxiformis, and when added to cattle feed, it has been shown to reduce methane output by up to 99 per cent in the lab. During trials the scientists involved were so shocked by the data provided that they initially suspected an equipment fault. Asparagopsis is easy to grow, cattle find it palatable and the mechanism by which it slashes methane emissions should prove no threat to the digestive workings of bovine stomachs. What’s truly surprising is that Asparagopsis is a kind of seaweed.

www.specseed.co.nz

 With 15 per cent of feed expenses lost as methane emissions, feeding a seaweed supplement could cut farm costs

Feeding seaweed to cattle is no new idea — the ancient Greeks and the Icelandic Norsemen used the slimy sea plants to supplement feed for their livestock. The idea that using such a resource could provide a solution to methane emissions is very new, however. Methane is a far more dangerous greenhouse gas than the more commonly known carbon dioxide, and

any way of reducing the contribution from the world’s 1.5 billion cattle could be revolutionary. Further tests to ascertain the longterm condition and health of cattle with a seaweed-enhanced diet are underway across the Tasman, but those initial figures point the way toward a possible solution to one of our biggest greenhouse gas challenges. 

We’re good at looking after our faces and even our hands, but what about our feet? Yet they’re so important to us. If something goes wrong with them we can be left immobile! “Treadling on an Aircycle circulation booster is a highly effective way to keep your feet healthy,” said Lynne Taylor, Manager of Diabetes Christchurch. Forty New Zealanders a day are diagnosed with diabetes. Each week there are nine amputations due to diabetes. High blood glucose levels can damage the blood vessels and nerves in the feet, causing poor blood flow and loss of feeling (neuropathy). Maintaining good blood flow in the feet is key to preventative foot care and is simple with an Aircycle. The ‘treadle’ exercise works the calf muscles and it is these which pump the blood. “It’s in our feet that arthritis, complications of diabetes including, nerve, neuropathy and circulatory disorders, often show up,” said Lynne. ”It’s important to heed the first signs, as loss of feeling can mean abrasions, ulcers and other foot problems go undetected or do not heal, sometimes leading to amputation.” The good news is that many foot problems can be avoided by daily foot care.

School to help with Xmas food parcels

15

 by Kent Caddick

Clearview School in Rolleston is one of over 180 schools nationwide helping the Salvation Army to fill food parcels for Christmas. This week the school will collect cans for the Salvation Army as part of the Wattie’s Cans for Good programme which is hoping to collect over 25,000 cans to help stock up much needed food parcels in the lead up to Christmas. Cans collected by the schools will be matched by Watties, potentially taking the total collection to 50,000 cans. Clearview School’s Cans for Good coordinator, teacher Serena Holm, said the children were keen to help out with this as it followed on from a similar event they ran earlier in the year. “In June the children were part of the Salvation Army’s winter fundraiser

in which they collected winter clothing and food for those who were in need of support over the colder months. “It was extremely well supported so they were keen to help out with this new event.” Mrs Holm said the canned goods must be Wattie’s products as part of the arrangement between the Salvation Army and the canned goods manufacturer. Clearview School pupils will also be using the canned goods to create something out of the donated cans. The five schools nationwide with the most creative ‘can creation’ will receive a $500 voucher which can be put towards art or school suppliers.

 Clearview School pupils help to fill a van with canned goods as part of the Salvation Army’s winter fundraiser earlier this yearp

The Salvation Army’s National Secretary for Social Services Pam Waugh said they are appreciative of the school’s support for the project. “We provided more than 55,000 food parcels to help Kiwis in need get back on their feet in 2015, and this year

the number of people needing help continues to grow. “Christmas is an extremely difficult time for many families, so food donations from Wattie’s Cans for Good will make a real difference to New Zealanders when they need it the most.”. 
