Husky Rescue NZ has been running for just over eight years and has been West Melton based for the last three years. Unlike most rescue organisations, Husky Rescue NZ has been mainly selffunded with the tab landing firmly at the feet of founder Michelle Attwood, her couple of foster homes and occasional donations. “We didn’t apply for charity status in the beginning as we never thought there would be so many to re-home. That was before the boom of Facebook marketing,” Ms Attwood said. Just over a fortnight ago Husky Rescue NZ

achieved its charity status. “It means we can apply for funding to help and also that businesses and people making donations can claim a charity tax deduction.” Husky Rescue NZ is currently needing to fence a bigger area for the dogs. Ms Attwood said local fencers have offered labour for free but the supplies will total approximately $6,000. She described the Husky Day Out fundraiser as a “husky-filled day of fun for all the family.” “We have timed it so people can sleep in then come down for a coffee and family entertainment.

“There will be lots going on including husky cuddle lines, a bouncy castle, adoption dogs, sled dog displays, a weight pull display, and the opportunity to give dryland sledding a go. The South Island Malamute Club will be there, along with information about the husky breeds and the opportunity to chat to dog trainers.” There will also be coffee and food stalls. Husky Day Out begins at 10am this Sunday at the Lantana Horse Track on Curraghs Road just outside West Melton. The event is unsuitable for small dogs. ¢

Mr Bedford took leave of absence from council two months ago due to ill health but recently said he will not be returning to Environment Canterbury (ECan). He was appointed to the position by the then Environment Minister, Dr Nick Smith, in 2010 alongside six other government appointed commissioners. Following the 2016 local body elections, Mr Bedford became the ECan chairman and guided the new partially elected council. “During David’s time serving the regional council, he has driven significant change because of his strong financial and business acumen,” Ecan chief executive Bill Bayfield said. “In particular, through his skilled chairmanship of the Performance, Audit and Risk Committee for a number of years, and, since last October, as chairman of the council. “He has also built strong relationships with district councils and many other organisations across the region, particularly aligned with his leadership of the air quality portfolio, and his involvement with the Hurunui

Rakaia youngster Tayla Davidson has received a boost to pursue her goal of representing New Zealand in the sport of karate at the Olympics.

p Rakaia’s Tayla Davidson is a step closer to her goal of representing New Zealand in karate thanks to an AMP Scholarship

The 11 year old is one of the recipients of a $10,000 AMP Scholarship aimed at helping young New Zealanders achieve their dreams. Tayla said she wants to compete in karate at an elite level, and ultimately on the New Zealand karate team at the 2024 Olympics. AMP managing director Blair Vernon said the talent, dedication and courage of the 2017 AMP Scholarship applicants meant it was extremely rewarding as well as particularly challenging to choose this year’s talented recipients. “This year AMP will provide up to $200,000 to help inspirational and gifted New Zealanders of all ages and from all walks of life who have the courage to chase their dreams. “Whether it’s a desire to start a new business, launch a community-focussed

Meet Your Street returns

A change of focus u by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

The third annual Meet Your Street programme is set to kick off in time for summer.

We now have a new Government and, while I am personally disappointed by the result, especially in view of the strong level of support that National received from voters, I accept that this is the reality of our MMP system. As a person who is passionate about New Zealand, I wish the new Government success. With my experience as a Minister I know that the business of being in Government is complex. It is easy to make lofty promises. Once you look deeper into the issues, you often find that what may seem like an obvious answer has broader implications that you may not have initially considered. When new Governments come in they often want to put their own stamp on things. Nevertheless, I strongly urge the new Government not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. For example, I hope that the work we have put in to tackle the root causes of family violence will not fall by the wayside. I would like to see the new Government take up the challenge to make New Zealand predator-free by 2050.

These are just two examples from a long list of aspirational policies that have come out of the past nine years which I sincerely hope are not discarded just for the sake of change. One thing that will not change, however, is that I will continue to work hard to be the most effective local MP I can be for the people of this region. I will make sure that the impact on our region of any proposed new policies, such as reducing the availability of skilled workers for our local businesses, is voiced in Parliament. I guess it is a bit like being a netball player who is being switched from Goal Attack, where the aim is to get the ball up the court to score goals, to Goal Defence. Despite the change in focus, I am still playing for the same team — Selwyn. ¢

p Residents attend a Meet Your Street gathering at Oakley Drive Reserve in Prebbleton last summer

Selwyn District Council’s mobile BBQ will be visiting 18 different locations around Selwyn providing free street gatherings to encourage neighbours to get to know each other. Along with the free barbecue, the events include music and games for kids. Connecting Communities coordinator Tyla Harrison-Hunt said Meet Your Street was a chance for neighbourhoods to get together to catch up with those nearby and make new friends. “These gatherings encourage neighbours to feel part of their local community, and is especially important for residents new to Selwyn to settle in and form new relationships,” Mr Harrison-Hunt said. Council has funds available for those keen to organise and host their own local street gathering, with a subsidy of up to $75 available for each gathering. “Anyone who lives in a neighbourhood in Selwyn can apply for this subsidy, which has increased from the $50

offered last summer,” Mr HarrisonHunt said. “The gathering can be a small group of neighbours or a whole street. It may be held at the local reserve or playground, or in somebody’s backyard.” The gatherings all take place on Tuesdays between 5.30pm and 7pm. The first gathering will take place on November 7 at Markham Way Reserve in Rolleston, with the last taking place on March 27 at Heathridge Place, Lincoln. Council is also running a competition to give away a bonus Meet Your Street event to one lucky neighbourhood in Selwyn. The Meet Your Street team will provide staffing, a mobile BBQ, drinks (non-alcoholic) and burgers for up to 50 people. This event will be held on Sunday, December 10, from 11am to 1pm and applications for it close on November 24. THE RECORD  November 1 - 2017

Continuing growth in Selwyn Crafts and more Selwyn District Council’s just released annual report has highlighted the district’s continuing growth and development. The report, for the 2016-17 year, noted that Selwyn’s population is now estimated to be 56,000 with growth expected to continue in the coming years. It showed revenue for the year was $169.8 million compared with the budget of $120.9 million, largely due to growth being ahead of forecasts. Mayor Sam Broughton said council is supporting this growth with investment in services, infrastructure and community activities across the district. “Selwyn people value the quality of life they enjoy here,” Mayor Broughton said. “As a council we are working hard to protect and maintain that and help residents and businesses make the most of the opportunities our district offers.” He said overall council’s financial position remained sound. Expenditure for the year was $105 million compared with the budget of $94.6 million. “The main variances included finance costs being below budget due to reduced borrowing, the unbudgeted costs associated with the Port Hills fire, and higher cost of sales from Izone land sales being well ahead of budget.” Building activity has remained strong with 2,527 building consents issued during the year, to a total value of over $600 million.

p Mayor Sam Broughton says the Selwyn District Council’s financial position remains sound

“This reflects the ongoing development of residential subdivisions in townships, along with new businesses and the opening of two new schools,” Mayor Broughton said. The Annual Report showed the impact of the Port Hills fires in February, with the total rural firefighting costs to the council calculated at $7.9 million. The majority of the costs ($7.4 million) were covered through insurance with the Rural Fire Fighting Fund. Council received higher dividend revenue from investments in Orion New Zealand Limited and Transwaste Canterbury Limited, while land sales revenue was also above budget due to sales in Izone being ahead of forecasts. The report also showed the value of the council’s net assets increased by $110 million to a total value of $1.503 billion. ¢

The annual Prebbleton Crafts and More Market is on again this month.

p The Prebbleton Hall will once again be the venue for the annual Prebbleton Crafts and More Market

This is the fifth year the annual market has been held. Any profits from the market are donated to the Prebbleton Heritage group. Founder Trish Clothier said the market originated after she had attended a couple of outdoor markets selling her chocolate bouquets. “But as they were very much dependent on fine weather, I thought, why not arrange a market myself, and indoors, and with heaps of help from my ever so patient husband, the project began.” The inaugural Prebbleton Crafts and More Market was held in the Prebbleton School Hall but was then moved to the Prebbleton Hall, which Trish said gave it more visibility being on a main road. She said with nearly 40 stalls the market was a chance

for people to do some shopping in a relaxed environment. “It’s a chance to buy Christmas gifts, gifts for any occasion or gifts for themselves, and enjoy a cuppa and a tasty nibble. “Prebbleton Heritage will once again have food, tea and coffee on offer in the supper room of the hall and there will also be a coffee cart, food and a gelato van. “There will a wide variety of craft items including embroidery, quilting, dolls’ clothing, wooden toys, soaps, candles, jewellery, art works, children’s clothing and much more.” The fifth annual Prebbleton Crafts and More Market will be held at the Prebbleton Hall in Springs Road on Saturday, November 25, between 10am and 4pm. ¢

Weedons records first win

7

Weedons have recorded their first win in the CRV Ambreed Country Premier one day cricket competition with victory over Oxford-Rangiora on home turf on Saturday.

p Oxford’s Dave Fulton smashes a ball to the boundary in his innings of 57 in the match against Weedons

At Weedons Domain, Oxford-Rangiora gave themselves a chance of points by compiling a competitive total of 162/8 in their 45 overs. Dave Fulton led the way with 57 and was well assisted by Andre Mitchell’s 46 but they got little help from the other batsmen. Weedons, by contrast, all chipped in to knock off the runs with several players chiming in with handy runs. Meanwhile, Leeston-Southbridge remains the only unbeaten team in the competition after four rounds thanks to a stunning Dougald Munro hat-trick which set up the win over Darfield-South Malvern (DSM). Darfield won the toss and batted first on a seaming pitch at Leeston but soon found themselves under pressure with ex-Nelson Hawke Cup bowler Tim Field taking early wickets for Leeston-Southbridge. Munro came on first change and in his fourth over claimed three wickets in three balls for a hat-trick that broke DSM’s batting effort.

Set 116 to win, Leeston made a solid start before three quick wickets gave DSM a hint of victory. However, former Dutch international Tim Gruijters soon snuffed out their hopes, steering Leeston-Southbridge home with an unbeaten 33. On a green wicket at Southbrook Park in Rangiora, the home side were scuttled for 145 in 40 overs by Lincoln, with Mark Elliot and Hugh Paterson taking seven wickets between them. While Lincoln lost early wickets in the run chase, unbeaten 60s by Canterbury Kings player Jeremy Benton and Joe Williams guided them to a six wicket win. Sefton returned to winning ways with a comprehensive win over Cheviot at Cheviot Domain. An aggressive 50 off just 55 balls from Sefton’s Matt Rowe saw his side through to 147/9 from their allotted 45 overs. Cheviot attempted an aggressive reply but lost a wicket in the first over and never recovered, being dismissed in the 26th over for just 70. ¢

Fine Lime applied the smarter, easier way! Is the cost of applying lime to your farm holding back your soil fertility and profitability? If you know that you need to apply lime, just like any other soil nutrient, but the volumes you require make your cheque book run for cover… If you recognise that improving soil pH leads to improved nutrient uptake by the plants and stock, then there is good reason for choosing Optimise. Optimise lime is a 100% fine particle but made easier for you to spread because its pressed into a pellet. However, Optimise is more than just lime! You will know that there is an inherent problem with agricultural lime applications - whilst you want effective fine-particle lime, you also require even and accurate application, and you want it to land only on your farm… Our solution to this was to pelletise ultrafine lime and “Optimise” was born as the result. Because Optimise works more efficiently than agricultural lime at reduced rates, due to the greater surface area of the finer particles, it can be applied two to three times over for the cost of one application of agricultural lime in some cases. Trial work demonstrates the effectiveness of using Optimise at 250kg/ha compared to agricultural lime at 2.5T/ha over two years had a similar effect on soil pH, albeit

the lift in pH from using Optimise was achieved much quicker. This provides great evidence for the reduced rates of Optimise and also equates to significant savings on your lime and fertiliser spend, especially on freight and application. Optimise is equally well suited for application by helicopter, plane, ground spreading and drilling. It breaks down quickly for a rapid response benefiting your pasture and crops this year and helps to balance your soils in the years to come. Being more than just fine-lime made easy, Optimise pellets can also conveniently incorporate a combination of S, Mg, P (RPR/Guano) and trace elements in the lime-based pellets, depending on what soil tests reveal. Lime and sulphur combinations are especially cost competitive. It is also very stable when blended with high analysis Nitrogen products, e.g. DAP or Urea making it ideal for a one pass application. Benefits of using Optimise pelletised lime: • Accurate and effective application. • Reduced transport and application costs. • Blend Urea or DAP for a single pass, complete fertiliser. • Add sulphur, RPR/Guano, magnesium, and trace elements, kelp & humates

Apply Gypsum Now

The benefits of gypsum in soil treatment are well known, but its value goes well beyond this: • Helps mitigate the flow of nitrates and phosphorus in New Zealand waterways. • Can be used to address the issue of sodium from applied effluent. • Reduces surface run–off and drainage loss, reduces preferential flow of water run–off in soil. • Can be applied by a number of different means to target risk zones. • Assists with addressing high soil potassium levels. For more about Natural Gypsum and soil stabilisation visit www.gypsum.co.nz Rates vary per farm and soil type. Applications can last for up to three years and can be used as a base layer in stand–off (loading) pads.

Hororata Highland Games

Let the Games begin The Hororata Highland Games was created in 2011 from the local community’s desire to take charge of its own future following the Canterbury earthquakes and the devastation of a number of key community facilities. Rather than wait for assistance a motivated group of individuals developed a theme which resonated with them and filled a unique gap in the event market, the Hororata Highland Games was born. The driving force behind the establishment of the games was the Hororata Community Trust (HCT), which was registered as a charitable trust in August 2011 with the purpose to help rebuild and promote the community following the September 2010 earthquakes. The Hororata Highland Games was established as the main fundraising focus for the HCT but also to give the community a positive focus. The brief for the games was to establish a quality event, which offered all the traditional elements of Scottish Highland Games surrounded by a fun filled festival which engaged the community. Run by a volunteer committee, the Hororata Highland Games has been held successfully for the past six years. It is now a permanent fixture in the Scottish competition calendar and regarded as one of the biggest of its kind in the Southern hemisphere. The event attracts well over 300 competitors who compete in Highland Dancing, Piping and Drumming, Tug O’ War, Highland Spin (a fleece to garment challenge), Small Bore Shooting, Amateur Scottish heavy athletics (men’s and women’s) and the Oceania Heavyweight Championship (professional Scottish heavy athletics). Competitors come from throughout New Zealand and internationally to compete. Last year saw a record crowd of over 10,000 attend. Visitors don’t come just to sit in the stands, but all ages can have a go themselves in modified or replicas of the competitive events. Have A Go events

include the Junior Warriors, Caber or Sheath toss, Lightweight Farmers Walk, Small Bore Shooting, Archery, Kilted Mile, Haggis Hurl and the Hororata Pie Eating Competition. Most of these events are free to participate in. The event also hosts over 100 stalls offering quality merchandise and produce. In the stalls area there is a children’s fairground, music entertainment, Scottish country dancing and the Taste of Scotland offering a range of Scottish themed food and wine. Visitors discover Scottish heritage and their ancestry in Clan Lane. The Chieftain’s Welcoming Ceremony is a unique blend of Scottish and Kiwi culture. A Karanga welcomes the chieftain, but the response comes from bag pipes. A Kapa Haka group adds even more flare and excitement to the spectacle. This year a special Armistice Day Remembrance service will be held as

part of the opening ceremony. For the first time a female chieftain will guide the proceedings with Selwyn MP Amy Adams accepting the role. The massed bands closing ceremony is not to be missed and provides a heart pounding and fitting end to the day’s proceedings. ¢

The competitions, held around New Zealand to coincide with the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Regional Finals, will get underway in February. However, due to popularity of the competitions, organisers are warning teams to get their entries in now. NZ Young Farmers competitions coordinator David Highsted said since AgriKidsNZ began in 2005 and TeenAg began in 2009 the competition has gone from strength to strength. “In the last contest season that culminated in record entries we have now expanded the number of teams competing to adjust to the growth.” Mr Highsted said TeenAg numbers competing increased by 27% last year alone, and AgriKidsNZ by 6%. He said the competitions were designed to be a fun competitive way to introduce urban and rural schools and families to agriculture, the contests have become the highlight of many students’ year. “These students are becoming champions of our industry and are

Rethink needed on waterway fencing New research on keeping stock out of rivers and streams requires an urgent and radical rethink of the current national riparian fencing strategy, according to Fish & Game. Currently, streams wider than a metre and deeper than 30cm must be fenced to keep stock out of them, but this rule doesn’t apply to smaller waterways. However, New Zealand scientific research just published in the international magazine Journal of Environmental Quality questions the current approach. The research by Lincoln University Professor Dr Richard McDowell, the principal scientist for AgResearchInvermay’s Environment Group and chief scientist for the National Science Challenge, has found the smaller, exempt streams actually account for the majority (77%) of the contamination load in a catchment. His research says as a result, not requiring smaller streams to be fenced may simply be undermining efforts to stop declining water quality. Fish & Game chief executive Bryce Johnson said the research paper makes for sobering reading. “This is an extremely important piece of research,” Johnson said. “We now have the science to show what we have long suspected that small waterways are crucially important to the environment and need to be properly protected from contamination.” He said protecting these small streams needs to be an urgent priority and there is now emphatic public demand for better water quality. “These smaller waterways are the capillaries of our lakes and rivers and

Why use a conveyancing practitioner u by Karen Faalilo, Conveyancing Practitioner

Conveyancing is the term used to describe the legal work required to transfer the ownership of real estate from one person or entity to another. The Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006 came into force on 1 August 2008. This allowed for the establishment of a new conveyancing profession in New Zealand. This enabled Conveyancers to undertake the legal work which is required when selling or purchasing a home. Consumers in New Zealand now have a choice for their legal support in the conveyancing process and are able to reap the benefits of specialist conveyancers which previously had been the sole domain of solicitors. Conveyancers specialise in property and have specific training and qualifications in all areas relating to the sale and purchase of real estate and related transactions. Whether you are buying, selling or refinancing a property, you will require the services of a conveyancing professional to manage the legal process of transferring

ownership from one person or entity to another. As New Zealand’s professional body representing Conveyancing Practitioners, the NZSoC (New Zealand Society of Conveyancers) recommends that consumers utilise the services of one of their expert conveyancing members (a list of Conveyancing Practitioners throughout New Zealand can be found on the NZSoC website). NZSoC strongly recommends you consult with a conveyancer prior to signing any contract to ensure that the contract contains the appropriate clauses to protect your interests. To appoint a conveyancer, simply insert their details in the final page of the Agreement for Sale and Purchase, and ensure that they are provided with a copy of the agreement as soon as possible. Some of the advantages in appointing a Conveyancing Practitioner include: • Conveyancing Practitioners focus primarily on conveyancing matters and property law, making them specialists in their profession;

• Conveyancers have completed the educational and practical training requirements to ensure that they deliver a wealth of experience and sound advice to their clients; • Conveyancing Practitioners are required to hold Professional Indemnity Insurance, which offers protection for all clients should any action or omission by a conveyancer in their professional capacity be overlooked. All clients can feel confident when instructing a Conveyancer that they are adequately covered in an unlikely event happening; • The NZ Society of Conveyancers has stringent rules surrounding the registration of Conveyancers, ensuring that only suitable, experienced and qualified persons can operate in the market place; • Upon registration as a Conveyancer, practitioners must abide by the ‘Rules and Codes of Conduct’ as outlined in New Zealand legislation, and also as determined by the NZ Society of Conveyancers. ¢
