“My wife Judith had been involved with the Malvern Cancer Support Group for 10 years so I knew I was in good hands,” 72-year-old Jack, a retired painter and decorator, said. “It is really important to have a positive partner and to tell all your friends and family what you are going through, so you can talk about how you are feeling rather than bottle it all up inside you.” This month, or Movember as it has been renamed, is Men’s Health
Awareness month, with a focus on prostate cancer as the most common cancer found in New Zealand men. Jack’s prostate cancer diagnosis came out of the blue for the Blairs. “I had a major back operation in March 2010 and it was through one of the follow up blood tests that we discovered I had prostate cancer. It came as a real shock. There was nothing that had given me any indication I could have had
prostate cancer. I was getting up a bit more often in the night to go to the toilet but that is often just a sign of getting older.” Jack was given two choices for treatment, radiotherapy or an operation to remove the prostate gland. He chose radiotherapy, which he said has around a 70% success rate, and so began an eight week treatment course.

Medical centre requires further modifications by Belinda Cullen-Reid
Changes to the car park should not further delay the opening of the centre. “It is believed that the medical centre will be able to operate whilst the works are undertaken. “This will be discussed with the medical centre in due course once the community board confirms the costings and their wish to proceed.” ¢
Despite meeting current council requirements the car park at the new, but yet to be opened, Darfield Medical Centre is to be modified. The medical centre, which has faced considerable opening delays due to sound proofing remediation work requested by tenant Dr Johan Vlok, now faces changes to the already completed parking area. Selwyn District Council’s property services co-ordinator Rob Allen said the car park currently meets all regulatory requirements and design and build contract specifications. However, he said, once the car park had been completed concerns were raised by Dr Vlok and members of the Malvern Community Board. “They had concerns about manoeuverability in certain areas of the existing car park. Costs will be dependent on the scope of the design. At this stage it is very hard to estimate.” Who will foot the bill for the changes has yet to be decided.
CERTIFIED PLUMBER Work needs to be done on the Darfield Medical Centre carpark
Mr Allan said the changes to the car park were part of future proofing the facility for the community. Various options were being discussed by the community board and Dr Vlok.

Community committees are the backbone of the Selwyn District Council and in my term as a councillor I have to admit my appointment to these committees has been most rewarding. Those who volunteer for these committees receive copies of council accounts to monitor how the collected rates for local services are spent. Their response gives councillors and staff an opportunity to understand how the general public wish community views to be incorporated into public policy and planning for their future. These enquiries can also reduce the rate charged to the local public. These committees have the opportunity to submit local projects to council for consideration in the council’s annual budget. However, a frustration can be that the council does not see
their project benefitting the whole Selwyn district and thus followed through with. Another frustration can be the numerous compliance issues past on to Local Government by Central Government especially in health and safety. Gone are the days when committee members undertook maintenance work on a local reserve or hall as though it was their own backyard or home. Certified contractors listed on a council register now have to be employed. The local caretaker, often a retired citizen, has now been replaced by a
council contractor. Overtime these compliance costs can reduce the enthusiasm for the local community to participate and volunteer for these committees. Another change has been the need for a double income to support a modern family reducing their participation. It is much easier for this generation to pay for increasing council costs through their rate accounts. For those who do volunteer for these committees I do enjoy attending your meetings. Over time I have learnt so many new jokes told at the end of a meeting to entertain my friends. ¢

TreatMe and GrabOne are just two of the multitude of daily deal sites which have sprung up in the last few years. They offer bargains on a wide range of goods and services, which are usually sold in the form of vouchers. Unfortunately sometimes it turns out these deals aren’t so good after all. We’ve all heard about the woman who bought a voucher dinner for two at a fancy restaurant, only to find that it expired in a couple of weeks and she couldn’t get a booking before the deadline. Another poor consumer bought a voucher for a ‘dental check-up’ for $50 and ended up with a bill of over $100 on top of the cost of the original voucher. It turned out his check-up included a surprise visit to a hygienist, whose $100-plus fee was an unwelcome additional cost. There are of course plenty of great bargains to be had from these daily deal sites, as long as you follow a few basic rules: 1. Remember that the daily deal site is creating a sense of urgency in you, so that you are more likely to buy on impulse.

Think about whether you really do need or even want that product. 2. Check to make sure it is a genuine bargain. Sometimes you can get the same or a better deal without the restrictive terms and conditions that come with these sorts of deals. It’s easy to quickly search the internet to find out how the much the same thing usually costs, and how much it costs from a different provider. If it looks like the discount advertised has been exaggerated, you can make a complaint to the Commerce Commission (you can call them on 0800 943 600) as they could be in breach of the Fair Trading Act. 3. If you’ve never traded with particular site before, try to find out about other people’s experiences of that site — ask your friends or search the Internet for reviews. 4. Make sure you look carefully at all the terms and conditions — and do so before you buy! We commonly see people caught out by expiry dates, or conditions
MEARES WILLIAMS LAWYERS
on when you can access the service you’ve bought. 5. Even bargains are covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act. If your supercheap new mobile phone stops working after 12 months, you still have the right to have it repaired or replaced. Also, the deal site is responsible for sorting out the problem and they can’t just fob you off to deal with the provider, even if their terms and conditions say otherwise. 6. It’s worth knowing that if you’ve got a voucher for a service, and you’re finding it hard to make an appointment before it expires, you can ask the daily deal site for a refund or an extension on the expiry date. 7. Above all remember the golden rule — if it looks too good to be true it probably is. If you think you’ve been ripped off by a daily deal, you can always get help and advice from your local CAB. To contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau look under ‘C’ in the business section of the White Pages or phone 0800 367 222 (0800 FOR CAB). ¢

Grandmother inspires new board chair

Two new faces and the return of an old one are the features of the new Selwyn Central Community Board. No election was required for the board at the recent local body elections as the number of candidates matched the number of vacancies, with Alan French the only returning board member. Diane Chesmar and Nicola Malloch are the two new faces while Bruce Russell returns to the board after a threeyear break. Mrs Chesmar, who lives just outside Rolleston near Burnham, has been selected as the board’s new chair and while this is her first elected role with council she has been involved for the last six years with council as community committees’ development adviser and as Civil Defence welfare manager. “As a fourth generation Selwyn resident I am very passionate about our community,” Mrs Chesmar said. She said she was inspired to stand for the board through her family’s involvement in community affairs over several generations, as well as the passion and commitment shown by her late grandmother Elsie Pearce. “Nana Pearce, as she was known to many, was involved in helping working families in Rolleston in the 1980s, hosting after school care for families with young children in her own home. “She lived to be 103 and when she turned 100 she was interviewed by a local paper and was asked was there anything she regretted and her answer was ‘not seeing Rolleston grow to its full potential‘. That’s what now drives me.” She said she sees the role of the community board as one of being able to advocate for the ‘grassroots’ of the community or enabling those people to do it for themselves. The other new face on the board is Nicola Malloch, an environmental engineer and a self-confessed ‘newbie’ to Selwyn, moving to Rolleston just 18 months ago.

Back row, from left: Mark Alexander (councillor), Sarah Walters (councillor), Jeff Bland (councillor), Marilyn Ponsford (secretary-retired), Peter Hill (councillor). Front row: Nicola Malloch, Bruce Russell, Diane Chesmar, Alan French
She relocated to Rolleston following earthquake damage to her Parklands home in Christchurch and for personal reasons. “I thought standing for the community board was a good way to get involved in our new community. “Rapid growth in Selwyn Central is obviously an issue for everyone living here and I would like
to be able to ensure people can have their say on how we deal with the issues involved with that growth.” Meanwhile, Mr Russell will be standing down as chair of the West Melton Residents Association to resume his board membership after a threeyear absence. ¢

Selwyn caddies wanted for prestigious tournament Social and serious golfers from Selwyn are being given the opportunity to be a caddy at the 2014 New Zealand Open tournament held at The Hills and Millbrook Resort Golf Clubs in Queenstown early next year. The New Zealand Open will be played in a ProAm format incorporating 132 professional players and 132 amateur players over the first two days. Over 150 caddies will be required for the tournament, a tier one event on the PGA Tour of Australasia. Caddy Master Andrew Whiley said while there were a number of returning caddies, there’s still plenty of places available for those keen to take part. “With the extended tournament next year played across two courses we need more caddies than previous years, so we’re putting the call out … continued from front page
Battling prostate cancer and winning “I was pretty tired throughout but otherwise it wasn’t too draining and the staff at the Christchurch Hospital oncology unit were absolutely fantastic. I can’t praise them enough.” During the treatment and the following two years of follow up testing Jack was unable to drive but his wife of 52 years, Judith, was able to help out with that as she was then the volunteer driver co-ordinator for the Malvern Cancer Support Group. Then in June of this year the Blairs got the news they were hoping for Jack’s cancer had gone. “It is hard to describe the feeling when you get given that news but it was great and gave me a new lease on life,” Jack said. “Throughout the treatment we never really talked about what if it didn’t work. We remained positive but waiting to find out the results of the follow up testing was the toughest part.” Jack’s advice to men in the battle to beat prostate cancer is to get checked regularly. “The key to beating this disease is to catch it early.” As part of giving back to all those who have helped him over the last couple of years Jack too has joined up with the Malvern Cancer Support Group and is now one of their volunteer drivers under the watchful eye of his wife Judith. ¢
Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand men and is the third largest cause of male cancer deaths in New Zealand. Each year around 2,500 new cases are diagnosed, similar to the number of women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and close to 600 New Zealand men die of the disease every year. Men should talk to their doctor about prostate cancer testing. There are advantages and disadvantages to testing. Understand the prostate cancer risk factors, discuss these with your doctor and decide if prostate cancer testing is right for you.
now to anyone interested in being part of this phenomenal event,” said Mr Whiley. “Caddies need to have some golf knowledge but most importantly they need to be fit, keep up with the players and carry a tour bag around the course. “Last year Regan Pearce from Queenstown had the honour of being Lydia Ko’s caddy, which was a great opportunity and one I’m sure he’ll never forget,” said Mr Whiley. There is a $39 cost to register and all caddies will receive an NZ Open golf shirt and hat to wear while caddying and to take home as a souvenir. ¢

Best of the country goes to town by Belinda Cullen-Reid
The weather was fantastic and the organisation superb. The well-oiled machine that is the annual Canterbury A&P Show demonstrated the finest of country life.
Ken Shipley of Greendale with his award winning Texel who took out Reserve Champion Ewe and first place, but was unsuccessful in the Miss Canterbury sheep competition
On display were the pick of prized animals and farm produce. Canterbury trades and services were given the opportunity to showcase what they have to offer. Entertainment was varied from musicians, cooking displays and comedians to the more rural events of shearing, wood chopping and show jumping. Sauce stained cheeks and wellworn feet headed back to the car park at the end of the day with arms laden with plunder from the many fantastic stalls. Cars were loaded as they weaved their way through busy traffic home. Tired and satisfied from another year at the show. ¢

Mayor delighted Central Plains water scheme gets the go-ahead by Kent Caddick
Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe says the news that Central Plains Water has received support from shareholders enabling the irrigation scheme to proceed is good news for the Selwyn district and the wider Canterbury region. that the $5m council loan will be repaid next year. Once fully developed, the Central Plains’ water scheme will draw water from the Rakaia and Waimakariri Rivers for irrigation. The scheme covers around 60,000 hectares of Selwyn, and will be constructed in three stages. The first stage of construction, covering 20,000 hectares between the Rakaia and Hororata rivers, is planned to start this year and be completed by September 2015. According to Central Plains Water Ltd once the scheme is fully operational it is expected to boost annual direct and indirect regional agricultural output by $264 million. The wider economic contribution of the scheme to the New Zealand economy is estimated at $1

billion — $1.4 billion per year. Stage One of the Central Plains’ water scheme will bring 120 million cubic metres of new alpine water into the Selwyn Waihora Zone. The introduction of the scheme is expected to reduce reliance on deep groundwater and increase flows in the lowland streams feeding into Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora. Consent conditions imposed by the Environment Court on the scheme require landowners to prepare farm management plans covering nutrient discharge limits, water management and soil requirements, which will be independently audited. A REVOLUTION IN LUCERNE PLANTING HAS ARRIVED Count on Nodulator clay granules — for better flow and better performance • No dust-off, lump-free formulation • Uniform size & smooth surface for superior flow • High counts of live rhyzobia • Precision placement
• Consistent performance • Improved nodulation • Ideal for ‘dry seeding’
Previously an Inoculant was mixed as slurry and added to the seed which had to be sown to precise conditions. Inoculant Nodulator makes things easier. If we were going to drill it with bare seed, at say 10-12kgs per ha and add the Inoculant Nodulator as 6kgs per ha, I’d be drilling at 16-18 kgs per ha. With the Inoculant Nodulator my drill is easier to calibrate.
Trials were conducted in 2010 in Ward near Blenheim. The results gave farmers a stronger plant after germination with better, healthier nodules.
“
When sowing Lucerne in the spring for seed production; you don’t normally get a harvest the first year.
Where the Nodulator was applied, there was an excellent harvest of seed in the first year — an added bonus for farmers wanting a cash crop.

FALLEN TREES A PROBLEM?
“
Central Plains Water has confirmed the offer to shareholders in the scheme area has received enough support to proceed, with 90% of Stage One shareholders and over 72% of Stage Two and Three landowners committed to the scheme. “The Central Plains’ scheme will boost the economy of Selwyn and the wider Canterbury region,” Mayor Coe said. “The scheme will have benefits both for rural communities in Selwyn who the scheme will service and for the businesses and households who will benefit from additional business and jobs as a result of the scheme.” He said in addition to the economic benefits associated with the scheme, it will also help to relieve pressure on the demand for groundwater for irrigation in Selwyn. The Central Plains Water scheme concept was first developed in a joint study commissioned by Selwyn District Council and Christchurch City Council in 2000. The Selwyn council has a $2.3 million investment in the project and had approved a $5m loan to the scheme last year. Mayor Coe said the investment of shareholders for the scheme means

Scholarship opening doors In 2000 Zach Ward became the first Hugh Williams Scholar, now, more than a decade on and Ward is now the production manager for Chile-based New Zealand dairy company Manuka, managing a team of 240 people and 25,500 cows. Applications for the 2014 Hugh Williams Ravensdown Memorial Scholarship are now open. They were established to recognise the late Hugh Williams, a Ravensdown director from 1987–2000. The scholarship provides $5,000 per year for sons and daughters of Ravensdown shareholders to undertake an agricultural or horticultural degree. After graduating, Ward was offered a job at Fonterra and worked for the dairy co-operative for three-and-a-half years. While there, he met Mark Townshend who was a director at the time. Townshend established the Manuka project in Chile and Ward leapt at the chance to be involved. “A typical day involves working closely with the supervisors to ensure we are executing the plan and responding to any challenges that come our way, especially climate related ones that impact on grass growth and feed supply,” Ward said. “The other big part of my job is

staying six to 12 months ahead of where we are. Everything needs to be planned and anticipated well in advance.” Ward said receiving the Hugh Williams Scholarship gave him confidence to pursue a career in agriculture. It also allowed him to focus more on his studies and extracurricular activities at university. “I was able to put a fair bit of time into other activities and did a lot of debating at university and still do quite well academically. “All of this helped open the doors that have led me to where I am today. That is to say, my grades and experiences at university is what got me the job at Fonterra and my job at Fonterra is what exposed me to the experiences and people that got me the job I have today.’’ Ravensdown chairman Bill McLeod said the co-operative is incredibly proud of past scholars, who have all gone on to play important roles within the agriculture industry. Meat industry’s destiny tied to co-ops Encouraging sheep and beef farmers to send their stock to the meat processing co-operatives will remain a focus of work by the Meat Industry Excellence (MIE) group according to chairman John McCarthy. “They are also shareholders and owners, and they need to exercise their rights and responsibilities to ensure the viability of farming in the future.” McCarthy says fears about the risk of loss of supply were no reason to hold back a proper debate about consolidation and integration. “The key to a successful transition lies with the farmer suppliers. It’s up to us. We can control and participate in the whole value chain or we can be price takers in perpetuity.” ¢

Courtenay A&P Show
23rd November 2013
The president and his first lady by Belinda Cullen-Reid
This year’s Courtenay A&P show president Hamish Reid has had a long association with the show and he and his wife Andrea are passionate advocates for this special rural event. “It’s such an important part of the community,” Hamish says. “It’s one day a year that all the community come together. The children look forward to it. It’s seen as a great social day out,” Andrea adds. Hamish has fond memories of attending the show as a child. His favourite memories are playing sideshow games, drinking soft drinks and watching the show jumping. Around 20 years ago Hamish could be found lending a hand in the sheep section while his father John was helping out in the horse ring, and Mum, Helen, in the produce shed. He joined the committee a few years later and has enjoyed being a part of the annual event ever since. Hamish and Andrea farm in the Aylesbury Halket area. Hamish is the fourth generation to own the farm, which has been in his family since 1877 when his ancestors emigrated from the Shetland Islands and settled in Canterbury.
Hamish and Andrea met through young farmers and married 17 years ago. Andrea comes from a farming family in Rotheram North Canterbury. They own a 160-hectare farm and lease a further 540 hectares. They run sheep and are part of the Kumanu New Zealand lamb exportation company. Crops include amongst other things barley and rye, speciality seeds grown for South Pacific Seeds and peas for Watties. The couple have three fantastic children who are ensuring that the show continues well into the next generation. Mya, 11 years old, attends Darfield High School and is mad about horses and will be competing at the show. Ben is 10 years old and enjoys going to Kirwee Primary School. A sheep enthusiast, Ben will be showing his pet lamb Mini. James is six and is following in his big sister’s footsteps with his love of horses. “It’s the next generation down who will keep the show going,” Andrea said ¢

Secretary looking forward to the future by Belinda Cullen-Reid
Adrienne Begg may be retiring this year from her 36 year involvement as Courtenay A&P show secretary, but that’s not the last we’ll be seeing of her. Adrienne is also this year’s junior vice president with the title role of president in her sights in a further two years. “I’m apprehensive in some ways and excited in others,” Adrienne said. The role of president is already a familiar one to Adrienne. Her father Tui MacArtney was president of the show in 1956. Adrienne’s husband Malcolm was president in 1986 and in 2010 her son Stuart took on the role. “My mum had a lot to do with the show too. As kids we went. We were brought up around the show.” Adrienne has seen the show grow and develop. The role of secretary has modernised along with it, moving from handwriting everything to using computers and email.
“I’ve enjoyed the modernisation of the role, meeting lots of people and giving something back to the community. I think it’s time they had some new blood.” Next year Adrienne will hand the reigns of secretary over to Sharon Kellock. ¢

The website was the idea of this year’s show President Hamish Reid who wanted to have a presence on either You will find all you need to now on the Courtenay A&P Show’s Facebook or the internet. new website The technical expertise was provided by incoming Secretary Sharon Kellock who recently joined the committee. “It’s great to have new people and for them to have a go. Help us keep the
power on Power outages following September’s severe wind storm were primarily due to trees and branches coming into contact with overhead lines and poles. As trees on private land are the responsibility of the land owner, we need your help to reduce the impact of future storms on our electricity network and on you and your neighbours.
How can you help? If you have a tree that could impact power lines, please think about your local community’s health and wellbeing. A power outage caused by a tree may not just affect you – it may impact many people, including those with health issues. Consider replacing tall trees near power lines with a lower growing species. If tree removal isn’t possible, as a minimum, make sure branches are kept well away from overhead lines and poles. If planting, think carefully about the type of tree you put near overhead lines – a little shrub can become a giant in a few years’ time. Call Orion for advice on suitable trees. Be safe The wind storm has left many trees weakened or damaged and in some cases leaning on other trees. If you need to remove, or prune, a tree or branch near overhead lines, please contact us. We will refer you to contractors experienced in tree trimming around power lines. For more information see our website oriongroup.co.nz or call us on 0800 363 9898. Come and see our display at the Courtenay A & P Show, Kirwee on Saturday 23 November. Learn the do’s and don’ts of trees near power lines.

Reduce the risk of power cuts • CUT DOWN – consider removing tall trees that could fall through power lines. • TRIM EARLY – if you can’t cut down the tree, keep branches at least 2.5m away from low voltage lines or at least 4m from high voltage lines. Ideally further. • BE SAFE – please call Orion on 0800 363 9898 for a list of qualified contractors. • PLANT WISELY – ask us about safe planting distances and power line friendly trees and shrubs.

Creating time honoured family traditions at the show u by Belinda Cullen-Reid
Early childhood memories of the show come flooding back each time I enter the Courtenay A&P showground gates each November. Being dressed in my best skirt and top, hair brushed and spittled by Mum’s exacting eye. An early start saw Dad in the ram shed making final adjustments to his prized stud sheep, my brother helping him to load the stubborn blighters in the trailer. Mustn’t forget to load the pet lambs. In the kitchen it’s a hive of activity with my scone entries for the produce shed steaming hot and begging to be eaten and Mum busily packing the picnic. There’s always a bacon and egg pie in the basket. Off we go to the show, Dad and my brother in the truck with a trailer load of sheep and Mum and I in the car with the food, looking our best and excited about the day ahead. It’s these family traditions I look back on with happy nostalgia and endeavour to recreate with my own family now. ¢

Well Drilling When Texco Drilling Ltd installs your new well you can be assured of quality. To ensure this we provide down-hole camera footage at the end of each well. We use experienced operators, with casing joining undertaken by skilled and qualified welders using formal weld procedures. Environmentally friendly products are used in all situations where equipment engages or enters the ground (thread grease etc.) We specialise in: •150mm and 200mm wells to 150 metres • 250mm and 300mm wells to 60 metres • Large diameter wells up to 1.2 diameter for efficient shallow wells • Galleries also installed with excavators up to 35 ton available. Well Development: We pride ourselves in leaving your well correctly screened and developed to its full potential with quality stainless steel wedge wire screens of the correct diameter and aperture size and developed to its full potential. Correct and full development has a positive impact on pump selection, protects your pump investment, and maximises the overall long-term economics of the well and pump installation. Each well is unique and may require a different approach to reach its full potential. Texco use primarily mechanical and air development methods depending on what is required in each situation. Inspection, rehabilitation and repair of existing wells: With our comprehensive range of equipment and high resolution Down Hole Video Camera we can inspect and recommend further action on your existing well or indeed recognise if it has reached the end of its economic life. We can then discuss a solution with you for each case. Well repair system: We also have a well repair system available to give you a viable option to fix a broken or non-complying well, rather than drilling a new one. Test Pumping: This can be undertaken with measurements taken by Orifice Weir, V Notch Weir or electronic flow meter with data loggers and down hole measuring done by electronic pressure transducers. We have our own diesel generator if power is not available on site.

Budding young farmers show focus by Belinda Cullen-Reid
This year’s Courtenay A&P show theme is one close to the hearts of show President Hamish Reid and his wife Andrea — youth in agriculture. “Because we have young children we wanted to see the theme of young people and agriculture promoted. We want the show to continue on,” Andrea said. There will be plenty of ‘have a go’ style activities for young people to try. A highlight will be the New Zealand Young Farmers Agrikids area which will be run like a mini young farmer’s competition. “They do all sorts of things like identifying animal parts in jars and
KIRWEE Your One Stop Motoring Shop
putting farm gates together. It’s a combination of life and farming skills.” The Reids said that young people could just turn up on the day and have a go. Spot prizes would be given away. Another exciting event for young people is the introduction of the Farmlands Four Bar pony jumping class for children. Competitors will have the chance to wear the specially designed ‘Reaching new heights at the Courtenay Show’ T shirt. A pet tent run by the West Melton Young Farmers will feature lots of kid friendly farm animals including new born chicks, lambs, goats, rabbits and piglets. Tara Marshall Dance school students will be performing.
