Applications for the 2017 Selwyn Youth Council open this week and young people aged between 14 and 24 years who live in Selwyn can apply. The youth council is made up of 10 young people with support from the Selwyn District Council. “Our youth council has made a big difference in Selwyn,” Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said. “If you are interested in helping support other young people and want to be a part of making cool things happen, you should put your name forward for consideration. Youth council

members can encourage young people to participate in local decision-making and ensure that their views are taken into account when planning projects that affect them, like town centre works, local parks, pools, libraries and events. “Any young person with a passion for issues affecting youth who wants to make a positive contribution to our community can complete an application online.” Applications open on Thursday, November 24 and close on Friday, December 9 and for more information or to apply go to www.selwyn.govt.nz or the Selwyn Youth Council Facebook page. 

Water smart this summer In a bid to help Selwyn residents cope with another dry summer, the district council has relaunched the SMART Watering campaign. Five Canterbury districts including Selwyn have joined forces with IrrigationNZ, Canterbury’s regional council and two industry partners to help the region’s home gardeners make the best use of irrigation water this summer. IrrigationNZ CEO Andrew Curtis said SMART Watering encourages urban gardeners to apply water efficiently. “This year’s campaign will focus on educating people about ‘drip irrigation’, which is the most efficient way to apply water, plus the benefits of timers or controllers for home garden irrigation systems, and how to store and use rainwater within the garden,” Mr Curtis said. Selwyn District Council Water Services asset manager Murray England said the SMART Watering website has a number of tips and resources for gardeners which can help people ensure that they are using water sustainably. “Selwyn has lots of new homes and the website also has some great advice for people considering planting a garden, on how to plant for our local environment, which is often dry over summer.” Mr England said the campaign recommends simple things like choosing early mornings or evenings for watering gardens, setting a timer on the veggie

West Melton Special Olympics athlete Rochelle Waters is about to take her message to the world.

 Malvern Lions president John Morten takes another order as the Lions help raise money for those affected by the Kaikoura earthquake at the Courtenay A&P Show

 Rochelle Waters of West Melton receives her Special Olympics New Zealand Global Messenger graduation certificate from Disability Issues Minister Nicky Wagner.

Rochelle has just been named as one of eight new Special Olympics New Zealand (SONZ) Global Messenger programme graduates and recently went to Parliament in Wellington to receive her graduation certificate. The 21-year-old’s history with Special Olympics has been a long and successful one, having started competing with Special Olympics Canterbury when she was just eight years old. Since then Rochelle has attended three National Summer Games, winning two gold medals in swimming. She has also won numerous ribbons at local and regional competitions, and took out Special Olympics Canterbury’s Athlete of the Year Award in 2014. Rochelle said she is now looking forward to her new role as a Global Messenger. “It’s pretty cool and it’s a great opportunity for me. I really want to get more confident speaking in front of people and to get people involved with Special Olympics.” In her last year at Darfield High School,

Rochelle completed a supported learning hospitality course through Christchurch Polytech. She now works part-time at the Darfield Bakery and does work experience at a local school and kindergarten. She’s also currently learning to become a dance teacher. Rochelle is clearly focussed on her future and has set herself a number of goals, including learning to drive and getting her own flat. “Through Special Olympics I have made lots of new friends and it keeps me fit. I’m really looking forward to being a Global Messenger and seeing if I can do lots of new things.” To date 62 athletes from around New Zealand have graduated as Global Messengers and have gone on to represent Special Olympics around the country and abroad since the programme launched in 2010. More than 7,000 athletes train with the organisation in 13 Olympic-style sports and compete locally, nationally and internationally. 

“The town was very busy with volunteer firefighters and resources like food and water arriving in town, and we also helped coordinate and direct some of these resources to where they were needed along with a local civil defence volunteer. Many of the needs people had were able to be met locally, fortunately.” Since then Selwyn residents and organisations have all pitched in to contribute to the earthquake recovery. One of those is Rolleston businessman Rick Irvine, who along with his wife Hotu, own part of a former vineyard on the northern outskirts of the Kaikoura township. Rick, who arrived back in country following an overseas trip on the day of the quake, sprung into action. “Having lived through the Darfield and Christchurch earthquakes, we knew people were going to need a hand up there. “I put a couple of posts on Facebook and I was overwhelmed at the response,” Rick said. “As of this Monday we had secured over $8,000 in

cash donations with fantastic support from Selwyn Business Group ($2,200) and the Selwyn locals, and donations from as far away as Auckland from a group of insurance and mortgage brokers who donated $2,500. “We have 12 4WD vehicles and large trailers loaded with 3,000 litres of water, 1,000 litres of fuel, 250 empty water containers, over $50,000 of food groceries and other items all ready to go, and we are just waiting for the inland road to open up to get the supplies in. “We have a team of 20 waiting for us in Kaikoura to assist in unloading and setting up our support centre.” Rick said they have had brief contact with the tenants who are leasing their property in Kaikoura. “They were all okay but the house was hit hard and they are now living in an old shed on the property.” Malvern Lions have also pitched in and the money they raised from their stall at the weekend’s Courtenay A&P Show will get to Lions clubs in Kaikoura to help with earthquake relief. 

In 2014, Craig Robertson of Rolleston was awarded the inaugural Holstein Friesian New Zealand scholarship to aid in his study towards a dairy career, and two years later he’s beginning that career at the same organisation. Mr Robertson has been named a Holstein Friesian New Zealand’s (HFNZ) South Island Field Officer within the not-for-profit organisation. He said the job is like a dream come true. “I’m excited to get out and work with some of the most progressive farmers in the country. “I’m also looking forward to coordinating and encouraging youth, and providing new and interesting initiatives to encourage membership and involvement. Originally from the Waikato area, Mr Robertson has spent many years involved with HFNZ’s youth arm, Black & White Youth, and said he always knew he wanted to work in the dairy industry. “I worked throughout primary and secondary school on the farm, relief milking and calving. When I was 17, a medical diagnosis cut short my onfarm career and I had to start looking at alternative options in the industry.” “I remember filling out the HFNZ Scholarship application and it asked how my intended study would relate back to Holstein Friesian New Zealand,” he said.

Organisers of this year’s Courtenay A&P Show are delighted with both the numbers that turned up for the 2016 show and the number of entries across all classes. The show was held in near perfect conditions at the Kirwee Domain and Showgrounds on Saturday. Show president Raymond Williams was pleased with how the day panned out. “It really helps when you get weather like that and it was reflected in the gate takings, which were well up on last year. “Overall the competition entries were up, with over 3,000 entries across all categories, including 1,200 in the horse section alone. There was also a notable rise the in the number of entries in the cattle section, with 65 entries compared to 29 two years ago, and that includes both dairy and beef cattle. “What was particularly pleasing about

the entries is that we had people who had never entered our show before coming along.” Mr Williams said the feedback he got was that people really enjoyed the show. “It wasn’t just the locals who said that to me and there were a number of visitors who remarked that is was a really fun event, and that was what we were hoping to achieve.” Mr Williams said he had to pay tribute to all the volunteers and show committee members who really made the day such a success. “The committee and other helpers put a huge amount of time and effort into making the show function, and it is a tribute to them and their work that is was so successful.” 

To safeguard the future, you need an architect — professionals who are university-trained and, if successful, have the professional desire and the

By helping you define the building project, architects can provide meaningful guidance for design. They can conduct site studies, help secure planning and zoning approvals, and perform a variety of other predesign tasks. Plus, when architects are involved at the earliest planning stage, they gain more opportunities to understand your business, develop creative solutions and offer ways to save money. Unless you have a recommendation from a friend or associate, your first stop should be with the New Zealand Institute of Architects, a professional body representing more than 90 per cent of all registered architects in this country. is able to assure their clients of recognised expertise. From site selection to move-in, an architect is a project manager. Efficient use of space can reduce the total square footage you require. And a welldesigned building can reduce initial costs and boost its long-term value. Architects with a wide knowledge of design and construction can offer ideas and alternatives that may ‘turn on a lightbulb’ over the client’s plans. Need more room for a growing family? An architect can show you how to enlarge your home so you don’t have to move. Looking for a holiday home on a lifestyle

block? (maybe you have benefitted from the zoom in house prices?) Not sure how fast your business is going to grow? An architect can design a second home or an office that meets your needs today and can be adapted for tomorrow. The architect’s services are a wise investment for the money, not an added cost to your project. The words ‘architect designed’ are often used to imply luxury and high-end design. But in reality, an architect can actually help you no matter what your budget, by helping you achieve the best design for the available money and avoiding costly mistakes. 

Build and renovate On scope, on time, on budget everytime!

The finishing touches by Andy Bryenton

When undertaking a big building project or major renovation, the temptation to grasp the big picture at all costs can be overwhelming. Seeing things from the point of view of the builders and tradespeople, building the bare bones of your new home, it can be easy to lose sight of the finished product — more than a collection of timbers and wires, concrete and steel. Of course, it’s there in the design sketches of architects — the vision of utility and aesthetic grace which many of us feel certain is out of the reach of real human beings with their pets, kids, muddy boots and spilled dinners. While the crisp lines of achingly fashionable furniture and the very latest in decor may not prove practical for the rough and tumble of everyday life for many families, it’s always good to sweat the little things as the build process comes to fruition — because tiny quirks of bad planning can prove irksome for years to come. Like that toilet roll holder just a little too far away for comfort. Or a stark, utilitarian bauhaus bathroom with precisely zero towel rails. Simple things can make or break a room. That’s likely the underlying science behind the ancient oriental art of feng shui, which dictates the harmonious placement of items in a

space. Antiquated ideas about evil spirits aside, there really is something in the human brain which weighs and measures the content of a room and decides that there’s either something missing or just too much there. One well displayed painting is elegant, for example — twenty six might require a headache remedy. There are two points to consider when it comes to the finishing touches which make your home unique. The third would have been resale value, but this is a poor excuse for being a bland follower of the flock. If you have built a brand new home for the next person to live in it instead of your own family, you are likely the kind of person who would rate a book’s merits on how many kilos it weighs. Design for yourself, make your mark and be original. Style guides are excellent, but they are just that — guides. Being bold and self confident works just as well

for interiors as it does for choosing fashion, otherwise the late great David Bowie would have gone everywhere dressed in a beige suit and may have ended up as a tax accountant. The other thing to remember is crucial — keep some money aside from the build to purchase unique, non-generic and tasteful fittings. Quality is in the little details, so make sure to budget from the start for the small luxuries that add the finishing touch. 

by Kent Caddick In 1998, Christchurch couple Ngaire and Tony Sigmund bought four hectares of bare land on the outskirts of West Melton, where they established their new home.

The couple already had a love of trees and had planted 20 hectares of pine near Oxford, and knew they wanted to do something similar on their new lifestyle block home. As members of the New Zealand Tree Crops Association, they had attended many field days looking at a potential tree harvest for their West Melton property. “We looked at a number of possibilities including grapes, olives and chestnuts, but either the set up costs were too high or it just wasn’t a viable proposition,” Tony said.

Tony had originally wanted to go into forestry when he left school but was unable to do so and settled on a career in aircraft engineering, but the love of trees never left him, hence the earlier decision to go into forestry in Oxford. After looking at the soil maps of the area, the Sigmunds finally settled on walnuts as their tree crop of choice. Ngaire said the fact the walnut factory was established in West Melton was one of the deciding factors in their decision. In 2000 they planted their first walnut trees, and between then and 2002 they planted over 400 trees, using half a

Lifestyle Blocks dozen different varieties, including New Zealand Purple. “They all have different attributes, some are early flowering and others more blight resistant, which is one of the main threats to the crop, along with frost.” Tony said some of the keys to ensuring the newly planted trees survived, were good irrigation and shelter belts. In 2009 they harvested their first crop, 60kg of walnuts. In 2015 they harvested their biggest crop of four tonnes. This year the harvest was three and a half tonnes. When the West Melton walnut factory was set to close, the Sigmunds got together with other walnut producers around Selwyn to form the Walnuts New Zealand Co-operative or A Cracker of a Nut. At present Ngaire and Tony pick, wash, dry and bag all the walnuts themselves and send them to A Cracker of a Nut in West Melton for processing. Here the nuts are processed into a range of walnut products including walnut oil, paste, flour, dukkah, chutney and pickled walnuts. The walnut shell is also used ground down and used in products for the abrasives, cosmetics and woodturning industries. Tony has also helped to develop equipment which is used to harvest and process the walnuts, including a washer and dryer. “It is important that the nuts are harvested quickly when they fall in April and May to prevent moisture spoiling the nuts,” Tony said. “They also need to be washed and dried as quickly as possible. Initially we were doing the washing by hand but we have developed a walnut washer which helps speed the process up and ensures the nuts are clean before they are dried.”

The nuts are usually dried in trays in a shed on the property but Tony has also used his engineering expertise to design and build a drier. Ngaire, who is a resource teacher in Darfield, has become heavily involved in a number of groups like the New Zealand Walnut Industry Group, which is involved in the promotion of walnuts. “One of the attractions to growing walnuts was the health benefits of the nut and we are keen to market this to New Zealand buyers,” Ngaire said. “While walnuts imported into New Zealand may be slightly cheaper, they do not have the quality or full flavour of those grown in New Zealand.” Tony and Ngaire admit walnut growing on their lifestyle block is not a get-richquick scheme given some of the costs involved in setting up, buying equipment and maintaining the walnut orchard, but that wasn’t really the point. “We are probably at the stage now where we have been able to recoup the cost of setting up the orchard,” Ngaire said. “We are not looking to make a huge amount of money out of this but when we retire we think we are at a stage now that the orchard will be able to provide us with enough income to cover the costs of running the orchard and maintaining our lifestyle block.” The couple say the orchard has also created a wonderful environment for them to live in. “There’s nothing like being able to spend time in the orchard, with all the animal life such as quail and pheasants roaming the property, it is just so peaceful,” Ngaire said.

Tony has some advice for lifestyle block owners thinking of getting into walnut growing. “Do your research and get help. There are some great organisations out there which will be able to guide people

through setting up and developing an orchard.” Given the life expectancy of a walnut tree is at least 100 years, the walnut orchard is a legacy the Sigmunds will be passing on to their children and grandchildren.
