Most recently, Hannah King won the Senior Dairy Calf Championship at the Boys and Girls Agricultural Club Championships held last week. This came on top of first prizes at the Canterbury A and P Show as well as success at the Ellesmere A and P Show. Speaking of the growing collection of prize ribbons won with her calf, Missy, Hannah said it was all made sweeter by knowing she was keeping up the family name. “I was quite happy because my Mum (Adele King) and my brother Samuel

have both won. I also felt really happy for Missy as well.” At the Canterbury show outing, the budding stock handler, with Missy, got a first for Best Turned Out and Handled and champion for Turned Out and Handled. The pair took out the hat trick by finishing the day by winning the Pet Calf Supreme Champion. On her final day of showing, Hannah was awarded a first place in the Young Handlers class and a second in the Junior Stock Judging.

From a 10-year-old’s perspective it was a challenge: “There were a lot of large calves and Missy is quite small. Also they tended to have more black on them. Missy is a Friesian, but she hasn’t got as much black on her. The leading took over half an hour. Then we had to stop and stand up our calf, then walk forward and stop and then the judge asked us heaps of questions.” Now there are holidays and Christmas to look forward to and preparation of course for more show accolades next year. 

 Rolleston twins Siobhan (left) and Olivia O’Brien are looking forward to a summer of dance in Australia

The 16-year-olds have been selected to attend the Cecchetti Ballet Summer School in Melbourne, Australia in January where they will spend six days studying dance from world class teachers. “It’s so cool that we got chosen,” Siobhan said. “The experience will be amazing. We will be doing what we love every day.” The girls began ballet lesson when they were four years old and took to it straight away. They started competing at age eight when they began lessons with Denice Garmonsway from Christchurch. “That’s when things started to get serious,” Olivia said. “Our teacher saw potential in us. She kept pushing us to go as far as we could go.” Siobhan said she likes how their teacher treats them as individuals

rather than focussing on them as twins. “She sees our individual personalities,” she said. While the twins do some duo dances in competitions their main focus is on their individual work. Both study ballet, jazz, contemporary and musical theatre. In Year 12 at Lincoln High School they are looking towards the future. Olivia would like to continue with performing as a career, while Siobhan is thinking about studying nutrition so she can help people make good decisions about their health. The girls are grateful to their ballet teacher for her time and effort and acknowledge the support their parents have given them along the way. “We’re really really lucky. We can’t thank them enough,” Olivia said. 

Resealing work underway Library to get makeover Around 60 roads across Selwyn will be getting a makeover in the coming months.

Rolleston’s library is to be renovated to cope with increased numbers.

 A summer road upgrading programme has begun in Selwyn

A total of 76 kilometres of roads will be upgraded including 11km of extra work which was funded by a $60 targeted roading rate introduced in July. “Road rehabilitation work is needed on roads which have a significant number of failures and require more than a repair and a reseal to maintain,” Selwyn roading engineer Mark Chamberlain said. Earlier this year the New Zealand Transport Agency announced it would provide Selwyn with $530,000 in extra funding for road maintenance. The funding was allocated to recognise

the increasing amount of traffic on Selwyn roads, and to support the extra reseal and road maintenance work funded from the targeted roading rate. “When the basecourse of roads become wet the strength is reduced and they become more prone to failure (such as potholes or edge damage), particularly on heavy vehicle routes,” Mr Chamberlain said. “In areas where drainage work is completed, this should help to reduce the problems with potholes and edge damage.” 

SPRING HOME RENOVATION

 Rolleston Library staff, from left: Chrissie Walker, Melissa Harrison, Suzette Brophy and Helen Cantillon are looking forward to the library renovation which will to provide more space for the growing number of users

The library will be closed for the first two weeks in December to allow its interior to be renovated to create more space for reading, events, new books and other resources. “The current library is servicing a much larger population than it was built for and the refit aims to make the best use of the space available in the library building,” Selwyn Libraries manager Vicki Carlyon said. When the library opened in 2000, Rolleston’s population was under 2,000. The town now has a population of almost 12,000.

A new library building is proposed for the future as part of plans for the development of the Rolleston town centre over the coming years. “As part of the current renovations the existing issues desk and the council service counter at the library will be removed to create more space for people to use for reading, research and for library events and programmes,” Ms Carlyon said. “These changes will also allow more books to be displayed so that library users have a greater range of books to choose from.” Online library services such as the library catalogue, online databases, e-books and Zinio magazines will continue to be available as normal during the temporary library closure. 

Team work, support from coaches and a lot of hard effort are the key components to one Selwyn school team’s success in getting to New Zealand Secondary School Touch Championships next month. Health and services directory launched  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

A directory to help Selwyn residents locate health and community services in the district is being launched by council this week. The Selwyn District Health and Community Services Directory lists groups and organisations giving a brief description including contact details. The directory has information on a variety of health and community ser vices including education providers, information and advocacy services, physical and mental health providers and services for the elderly. The directory also includes local and national support services for young people, children and adults. The directory, which can be accessed both online and in booklet form, was first trialled by Selwyn District Council in 2011. With rapid population growth and changes in services a new version has been released. Community Services Manager Lesley Symington said the directory will be particularly useful for new Selwyn residents. “It can be difficult for new residents to find out which services are available locally and the guide lists a range of services people may wish to access like medical practices, pharmacies, early childhood education centres and school holiday programmes.” “Existing Selwyn residents will also find the guide helpful as many people may not be aware of the range of services now available in Selwyn. The guide also has information on how people can access specialist services like budget advice, hearing clinics and tuition for children.” The directory can be accessed online by going to www.selwyn.govt. nz/community or in booklet form from libraries and services centres in the district. 

Footpath improvements begin

Rural drink drivers in spotlight

 by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Selwyn has joined a campaign aimed at making Canterbury roads safer by reducing rural drink driving.

Pedestrians should notice an improvement in future footpath networks in Rolleston following changes to District Plan rules. Selwyn District Council asset manager Murray Washington said there had been room for improvement in Rolleston’s footpath network but previously council had little say over what pedestrian access developers provided. “The issues we face reflect the historical nature of the development

of Rolleston and the limited ability Council had previously to control how private developments should provide and link roading infrastructure including pedestrian facilities.” Mr Washington said recent changes to the District Plan now required any new developments to have a footpath on both sides of arterial and collector roads while other rules and guidelines have been introduced to provide better pedestrian facilities both on roads and within development sites. “This cannot be retrospectively applied and in acknowledgement of this the council has over the last three years provided funding to enable key sections of missing roadside footpaths to be built over the district’s townships.” Mr Washington said the recently released Rolleston Town Centre Master Plan had numerous projects which would improve pedestrian and cycling access, including signalising busy intersections, and constructing new footpaths and cycleways. The implementation of future plans was subject to funding approval. 

 A rural drink driving campaign aims to reduce the number of alcohol related motor accidents on Selwyn roads

Selwyn and road safety coordinators from Hurunui, Waimakariri, Ashburton, Timaru, Mackenzie and Waimate have combined resources to run the campaign, which encourages motorists to plan a safe ride home if they drink this summer. “Many people believe drivers who have been drinking have a lower chance of being stopped by police when they drive on rural back roads and in some cases people think they can get away with drink driving in rural areas,” Selwyn road safety coordinator Ngaire Tinning said. “Drink driving is never acceptable. It puts everyone at risk and is one of the leading causes of crashes in Selwyn.”

In Selwyn District between 2009 and 2013, there were 153 crashes where alcohol was involved. These crashes resulted in 14 fatalities and 37 serious injuries. Most drink driving crashes occur between Friday evening and Sunday morning. “In many cases when drivers are affected by alcohol, they tend to drive faster and don’t wear seat belts and this mix often results in tragedy,” Mrs Tinning said. Canterbury Police will be carrying out more random patrols on rural roads over summer to support the road safety campaign. The booze bus will be deployed in rural areas as well as urban areas. 

A love of dressing up

7

 by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Entering a fanciful world of costumed craziness is not something you’d expect when visiting a lifestyle block five minutes from Rolleston, but that’s exactly what happens if you call at Tracey Holland’s place. Tracey set up her costume hire business from home seven years ago and has watched it grow from a rack of clothes in the front bedroom to a converted double garage containing hundreds of colourful and creative costumes. “It all started when I had a dress up themed party for my 40th birthday,” Tracey said. “I made a lot of costumes for my family and so I ended up with this rack of costumes at the end. It just started from there.” Tracey’s costume business began to grow through word of mouth. “When I first started it was just friends and a few locals turning up. Some people driving past see the sign and drop in and have a look.” Tracey has always loved sewing and had previously had jobs sewing a variety of things from curtains to bags at meat processing plants. The mother of two had also made costumes for her children when they were younger, so it was an easy transition to making costumes for adults. “I’m always looking for fabric. I’ve got boxes and boxes of fabric. I’ve made nearly half of the costumes I hire. I love that side of the business. The ones you make are original and a bit different from what you can buy online.” Before long the front bedroom was full, so Tracey took over the garage attached to the house. “My husband thought it was a bit of a joke when I started. He didn’t think I’d actually do it. He thinks it’s great now.”

“It’s brilliant working from home. “If I’m having a quiet day at work I can just carry on and go do some vacuuming.” Tracey and her family moved to Weedons, a small town near Rolleston, around 20 years ago. They had been living in Christchurch and were out for a drive one day and stumbled across Weedons School and fell in love with the area deciding this is where they wanted to live. Tracey’s children attended Weedons School and then went to Lincoln High School. She says her main clients are from Selwyn including Rolleston, West Melton, Kirwee and Darfield and they are usually surprised when they come and visit her costume shop for the first time. “People don’t expect to walk into a garage in the country and see all this. They say, who would have thought? People are always surprised, especially by how many costumes there are. “I’ve got hundreds of costumes and I keep adding to them. You’ve got to keep up with the latest movies and characters.” While she loves creating the clothes her favourite part of the business is the people. “I get to meet a lot of nice people. We have lots of laughs. It’s a fun business to run. The downside is the ironing. I hate ironing. I get my mum to help.” Tracey has her own Facebook page and she loves it when people send her photos once they are fully dressed up for their events. “I love to see the finished product and to have people tell me stories about their

 Tracey Holland hopes her garage full of costumes will help people to have some fun in life

parties. I think it’s great. They become another character and get rid of their inhibitions. Sometimes people put on a wig and it changes them completely.” The most popular costume for men is dressing like Austen Powers and for women Minnie Mouse. Tracey said her range of costumes from the 70s were also popular as her main clientele were growing up around that era and now like to have parties where they play 70s music. Other popular costumes are flappers from the 1920, uniforms such as police and army, pirates, country and western and rock ‘n roll.

“Since the West Melton 150th celebrations I’ve had a run of men who want to dress up as women,” she said. Tracey noticed a considerable change in the social habits of people following the Canterbury earthquakes. “It was very quiet for a good six months after the earthquakes. Then people started having more parties at home because there weren’t the places to go out to.” She hopes providing costumes for people to have fun in will help people find balance in their lives. “You’ve got to have a balance in life and throw a bit of fun in. What’s more fun than dressing up?” 

fellow, Dr Peter Nuthall. Dr Westbrooke said irrespective of the fluctuating price for milk solids, dairy farmers with smaller herds face unique challenges and considerations when it comes to questions of progressing their business or improving their lifestyle. “For instance, it is thought that most farmers with smaller herds are probably working the farm largely by themselves, which creates particular problems and stresses.” The research, which has been commissioned by the Smaller Milk and Supply Herds group, will entail phone interviews of approximately 10 minutes each to around 350 farmers. Only those farmers with 350 cows or fewer will be asked to participate in the interview. Dr Westbrooke said the information collected will include views on development and change with regard to such things as purchasing land, investing in labour-saving technology, investing in off-farm ventures, or even diversifying into farm-based tourism. interviewees to express any ideas or thoughts that sit outside the set questions. She said SMASH is keen to collate this information to more effectively develop and deliver the resources these small-herd operators need. “Similarly, they hope to gain a clearer picture of succession intentions in order to ensure relevant support material and mechanisms are established.” Farmers will be asked to provide information about their business to enable the categorisation of groups for assessing any emerging themes. For example, farmers who express concerns about the capacity or desire to continue farming might find resources on options for farm  devolution useful. Relating attitudes to requirements will help ascertain what type of information is required and how it might best be framed or presented. Farmers will also be asked their preferred method for obtaining this information, such as online, in topical booklets, at field days, or through a specialist consultant. The material collected will be kept strictly confidential, and, although it

It’s given young auctioneers a chance to stand up and be counted. It’s done a world of good for young guys in the industry,” Cam said. Cam said the competition not only gives young auctioneers something to aspire to, it is also helps with career advancement. “Entering the competition is like putting your hand up in the industry and saying I’m keen to work at this.” Working as a stock agent for PGG

 Cam Bray winner of the 2014 Young Auctioneer competition and the Denis Hazlett medal

Wrightsons in Darfield Cam first began auctioneering when he was 18 years old when a colleague at a sheep auction introduced handed the reigns over to Cam without warning. “I was dropped in the deep end. I thought afterwards, what just happened there? It was probably pretty untidy but I was hooked from there.” He was taken under the wing of the company’s head auctioneer John McKone who taught him the ropes, including pitch and volume of voice, how to open a sale and sales patter amongst other things. “You’ve got to know what you’re selling and get as much information as you can before the auction. You’ve got to be confident and in control.” For the past three years Cam has been auctioneering regularly. He acknowledges that auctioneering is definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. It’s a job with highs and lows, where the auctioneer is in the limelight through it all. “When you get a good sale everyone’s happy and it’s a great place to be. A really good bidding war is great. It adds real atmosphere. “A fast paced auction is an auctioneer’s dream. A tough day selling can fall back on the auctioneer. At the end of the day you’re only controlling what’s happening in the auction. You just have to try and do your best.”

Cam is hoping to make a full-time career out of auctioneering, a career that takes focus, dedication and a decent amount of courage. “If you’re not nervous, you’re not trying hard enough. “I’m not cold and sweaty and shaking at the knees anymore before each auction, but I’m always a little nervous.” 

Alliance’s big catchment areas for sheep in Southland and Canterbury have shown some of the biggest drops in sheep numbers in New Zealand.” Mr Drummond said a key to moving to a new larger single co-op would be attracting more supply. “This loss of supply is a result of procurement practices and uneven treatment of suppliers, combined with a lack of vision and plans to improve returns,” Mr Drummond said. “Of course we can attract back supply but we have to rebuild trust and play fair. Show numbers up at Courtenay All photos by Ken Muscroft-Taylor

The Courtenay A and P Show committee is celebrating a successful show including an increased number of people through the gate. With over 250 additional gate sales on Saturday this year’s show president Peter Schnell said the committee was building on the success of previous shows and attracting visitors from around the district. “We’re starting to draw more people to the show including people from West Melton and Rolleston,” Mr Schnell said. “It was a good show last year so that helps to get people back. People talk about it. It’s also helps to have good weather in the morning.” A swirling southerly storm threatened to dampen the day, but did not hit Kirwee until around 3.30pm. Mr Schnell said the change of weather caused a small amount of disruption to the final horse event, including blowing some jumping equipment over. Mr Schnell said the committee purposefully kept the price of gate sales down to attract a bigger crowd. He said he was thankful to the show’s sponsors for their support. 

Lincoln technology on show to Chinese President

Cutting-edge agri-technology developed at Lincoln University came under the scrutiny of Chinese president Xi Jinping during his recent visit to Auckland. Lincoln University, and its 100 per cent owned subsidiary company Lincoln Agritech, were part of the AgriTech Industry Showcase hosting the president and accompanying Chinese officials, as well as Prime Minister John Key, and ministers Nathan Guy and Steven Joyce. Lincoln University business development manager Dr Sam Yu said utilising precision agri-technologies could reduce the consumption of water and dramatically enhance efficient management of natural resources for better food production. “Lincoln University has 136 years of experience in this area and a lot to contribute in this space,” Dr Yu said. “There is much that New Zealand can take advantage of in terms of spearheading efforts to tackle these global issues with a strong partner such as China.

“The ability to demonstrate and apply specialist knowledge and turn it into precision agricultural products for uptake is highlighted in the expo, and New Zealand is leading that charge in the world,’’ Dr Yu said. Lincoln Agritech chief executive Peter Barrowclough showcased one of its most successful products, Irricad, a smart software tool able to optimise and generate cost effective and efficient solutions for irrigation and water management systems on vineyards, farms, and even small cities. He said the software had been sold to over 60 countries and they would like to add China to the list. Mr Barrowclough had just returned from a trip to the Yangling area for the China Agricultural Fair, where he saw the potential benefits of the product for the farmers there. “There are massive

Shop and Win

Christmas shopping can often be a stressful time — what to buy, where to buy it — so, to help you lower those stress levels here is a guide to help you shop sensibly with less stress. Thanks to our good friends at realsimple.com for the advice.

It’s that time of year again — there’s a festive feeling in the air and the whole community is buzzing with anticipation.

Fuel up It’s hard to shop sensibly when your blood sugar is crashing, so skip the bagels, the donuts, and the sugary breakfast cereals, says Keri Glassman, a registered New York dietitian.Choose a meal loaded with fibre, protein, and healthy fats—like oatmeal made with skim milk and almonds. Don’t dress just for comfort When people are feeling insecure, they tend to buy more, according to Darren Dahl, a professor of applied marketing research at the Sauder School of Business, in Vancouver. So ditch the sweats and the sneakers if they make you feel frumpy and opt for something stylish, like flats or an on-trend top, which boosts your self-confidence. Download an upbeat playlist Mar tin Lindstrom, author of Brandwashed says ‘holiday music makes us nostalgic. We linger in the store and buy more to capture that warm, fuzzy feeling’. So put in your earbuds and listen to songs with a beat faster than your resting heart rate, which is, on average, about 70 beats a minute. Those tunes

Spend $50 or more with one of our listed Shop and Win partners between November 19th and December 5th, fill in an entry form in store and, if you’re the lucky shopper who claims

the grand prize, you’ll walk away with $500 to spend with the store where you posted your entry. It’s that simple — and the best news of all is that all of these proud local businesses have come together to bring you everything you need for the holiday season. Last year we received in excess of 5,000 entries to our shop and win contest — representing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of local spending. Growing watercress  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Recently I tried watercress in a salad at a friend’s house. It was the first time I had tried it and I was taken aback by its peppery flavour. It was part of a salad which also included orange and avocado, so the blend of citrus, cream, and the bite from the watercress made for an interesting culinary combination. When I enquired as to where she got her watercress from she told me she grew it in her own garden and despite its name watercress didn’t need a stream or pond to grow in. In fact a little research later and I found out you can even grow your

own watercress in a pot if it is kept moist enough. Watercress is one of the oldest known leaf vegetables consumed by humans. It is part of the Brassicaceae family and is related to mustard and radish. It is a semi-aquatic plant needing a small amount of moisture to thrive. It is rich in iron, calcium, iodine, folic acid and vitamins A and C. It is also a source of omega-3 fatty acids. As a note of caution, it is better to grow your own watercress rather than forage in the wild for it. Watercress is a great sucker of surrounding nutrients which can lead to food poisoning when grown in contaminated areas in the wild. Growing watercress in a container To grow watercress at home in a container you will need a container with good drainage. Drainage is imperative

you should ask yourself before choosing your next plant supplier...

otherwise water will stagnate at the bottom and your plants will rot. Fill the container with compost mix and moisten. Plastic containers are better than clay pots as the latter absorbs the moisture and your watercress will need as much moisture as possible. You will need to purchase some watercress plants. You can get some from a garden centre, or sometimes they are sold at markets or grocery shops. If they still have their roots on them then it is a simple matter of planting them directly into the compost in your pot. If they have had their ends cut off and they no longer have roots then you

Make holes in the compost a little wider than the stem and roots and then plant your watercress. Put in a shady spot. Don’t despair if the leaves wilt a little, they will soon recover. You will need to water the plants every day. Some people put their containers under a slow dripping tap, otherwise you can use a watering can or sprinkler. It will take around five weeks for the plants to establish. After that they will enjoy a good feed of nutrients every now and then as they are used to getting these when planted in streams. 
