Leeston in playoff for national title shot

Unbeaten Leeston-Southbridge and defending champions Sefton will meet in a one-off showdown …

It is hoped the Selwyn Motor Fest and Family Fun Day, which raised funds for Selwyn Central St John, will become an annual event. Local district councillor Craig Watson, a member of the Motor Fest organising committee, said the district needs more high profiles. “The district already has some great draw cards like the Hororata Highland Games and Selwyn Sounds which help to raise the profile of the district, but we need more.” He said overall the feedback on the inaugural event had been positive.

“There were far more people there than we expected, which was cool, but it did throw up some challenges for us to deal with. “There were a lot of volunteers who came in on the day and helped to get us over the line and we really appreciate that. I think the event really did raise the profile of the district and for the local St John ambulance service, as a lot of people think it is fully funded but it isn’t. “We haven’t done a final tally of the money raised but I think it will be significant, maybe in the tens of

thousands. A lot of people gave more than the ticket price as the money was going to St John.” Cr Watson said it was hard to get an accurate estimate on the crowd. “There were well over 850 cars, trucks and motorcycles on display and as we didn’t issue tickets for everyone as people paid on the day it is hard to put a number of people who came in but I would say it would be in the vicinity of 5,000 to 6,000.” He said all the food vendors were really happy with the way the day went and some even sold out of food. 

Christmas spirit Selwyn district libraries are getting into the spirit of Christmas with a number of events and their annual Cantastic Tree appeal.

I would like to announce my retirement from Bright Beginnings Montessori Preschool and Nursery and wish the new owners David, Carrie and Zoe all the very best with their new adventure. Thank you to all the wonderful children and their families I have got to know over the past ten years. It has been an honour and a privilege to have been involved with the early learning of these children, helping them be ready for their big adventure into primary school. Thank you to my wonderful staff for your dedication and passion and helping me bring Montessori into reality in Rolleston. Also a big thank you to the wider community who have given their time and supported events and fundraising over the years. I will miss you all dearly and although it saddens me, knowing you are all in good hands and with Hayley at the helm makes my goodbye a little more bearable. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2018.

Local residents are being asked to donate canned goods which will go to build a ‘canned’ Christmas tree in each of the Selwyn libraries. The canned donations will then be given to the Ellesmere Food Bank Trust to help those in need right across Selwyn over the festive season. People can put their donations on the Cantastic Tree at their local library and service centre between now and Monday, December 18. Donations must be in cans, non-perishable, within the use-by or best-by date, and with original label. The libraries will also be holding a series of special Christmas storytime events and the popular Summer Reading Bingo programme aimed at encouraging youngsters to read. Christmas storytime events will be held throughout December at the four Selwyn libraries. These family events will celebrate Christmas with stories, songs and other fun,  All Selwyn libraries are collecting canned food donations to build Cantastic Trees which will be and are aimed at children aged donated to Ellesmere Food Bank Trust between two and seven, although December 12, Lincoln Library — families of all ages are welcome. They will be held from 6pm to 7pm, December 14 and Rolleston Library — at the Leeston Library, on Wednesday, December 18. Visit www.selwynlibraries. Innovative bus trial for Rolleston

 by Kent Caddick

 by Kent Caddick

A new rapid bus service between Rolleston and Christchurch is to be trialled early next year. Environment Canterbury has decided to trial the service following feedback from the community over the last 18 months, Environment Canterbury’s manager of public transport strategy, planning and marketing Edward Wright said it will be a new style of service. “It is different to any kind of express service we have done before,” Mr Wright said. “There has been demand from the Rolleston community for faster transport to the city, and we are now in a position where we are able to trial something new that we hope will meet the community’s demand.” He said the new service will be designed to complement the existing Yellow Line service rather than duplicate it, and will take the fastest route available on the day, avoiding congestion. “Rolleston has seen enormous growth in recent years, and the demand for this kind of service is there. “If successful, it is likely the rapid service concept could be trialled in other locations, such as Rangiora and Lincoln,” Mr Wright said. The service will consist of three trips in the morning from Rolleston to the city, and three trips in the afternoon from the city to Rolleston. “Between Rolleston and the city, the bus will take the quickest route available on the day, at the driver’s discretion.

 ECan is to trial a new rapid bus service linking Rolleston and Christchurch

“To ensure a fast journey with minimal delays, the number of pick-up and dropoff points will be limited to three of four locations at each end.” Environment Canterbury is asking for input from Rolleston residents on stop locations and timing. “To help us plan the best possible service for Rolleston passengers, we are asking residents to complete a short survey.” To complete the survey go to: metroinfo.co.nz/promotions/Pages/ Rolleston-Survey-2.aspx. 

Ms Moore, who lives on West Coast Road with her husband Chris and their four children, was the lucky winner of the store’s ‘60 second shopping grab’ competition, with shoppers earning one entry into the competition for every $100 they spent. She said the family moved to West Melton from the North Island two years ago for work reasons and had been shopping at the West Melton Four Square since it opened last year. “I

knew the layout pretty well and the kids were pretty excited and had done some research on the internet on how best to do a shopping dash,” she said. “I had an idea of what I wanted but once I started it did become a matter of just grabbing what I could see. It was exhilarating.” West Melton Four Square owner Brent Little said they wanted to run the competition to thank all the local shoppers who had supported the store in its first year of operation. 

THE RECORD

Selwyn ready for summer fun

Disappointment for Canterbury sports groups

The annual Summer in Selwyn programme is set and ready to keep locals entertained over the coming months.

 by Sam Broughton, Selwyn Mayor

November has been a busy month in Selwyn. It was a great honour for me to perform the role of Chieftain at the Hororata Highland Games on November 11. The event is a unique mix of Kiwi flair and Scottish tradition and it was fantastic to see competitors and eventgoers alike getting involved in the day’s activities with gusto. This past weekend I attended the annual Courtenay A&P Show at the Kirwee Showgrounds. Like the other A&P Shows around our region, the Courtenay Show has a long history, with this year being the 142nd time the event has been held. In contrast to this, the following day I opened a brand new event for Selwyn – the Selwyn Motor Fest. This successful event in Rolleston attracted vehicle enthusiasts from around the South Island and raised funds for our local St John. I understand that there are plans to make this an annual fixture which will add to the variety of events available

for our communities to enjoy. On a less positive note, I am disappointed by the decision of the new Government to halt progress on the Metro Sports Facility. The Government’s claims that the project is expected to exceed its budget by $75 million are misleading. Much of the $75m is an estimate to cover risk and given the ground conditions in Christchurch and the experience gained by contractors working in these conditions on the Justice Precinct, this is not surprising. The risk-sharing component may never need to be paid if the contract goes well, but public sector financing rules require it to be entered on the books. Unfortunately the Government’s decision will further delay the completion of the project, and may result in our region not getting the world-class facilities our sporting groups were expecting. 

The programme kicks into life in December and will run through to April with over 70 Selwyn District Council and community events planned for the 201718 summer. Council’s senior events and recreation advisor Dave Tippett said there is something for everyone to enjoy this summer in Selwyn. “Summer events are fun for the whole family and help make Selwyn a great place to live by connecting people to their community,” Mr Tippett said. “We are proud to present even more events than in previous years, with a great range of community-organised events on offer as well, including Christmas parades, community markets, fetes and picnics, and fitness-related events,” he said. Council events include two drive-in movies at Rolleston and Darfield, and two outdoor movies at Lincoln and Leeston as part of the Spectrum Lighting and Sound Outdoor Family Movies. “People can either park up and tune in to a special frequency on their car radio, or bring a seat, bean bag or blanket and chill out in front of the huge outdoor screen.” The Faringdon Summer Pool Parties will include a special Christmas Pool

Party at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, as well as Darfield and Southbridge community pools. The New World Rolleston Picnics in the Parks are coming to eight locations, with live music, bouncy castles, face painting, Pedalmania, and entertainment. The New World Rolleston Teddy Bears’ Picnic will return to Rolleston Community Centre and Rolleston Reserve. “With an opening performance from Cirque Grande, the Teddy Bears’ Picnic will be jam-packed with family fun, including a teddy bear parade, face painting, fairies, bouncy castles, toddlers’ gym and prizes.” The Faringdon Summer Skate Jams will take place at eight locations around Selwyn, where coaching from experienced skate instructors and equipment for hire will be available. The Music on the Green series of events will also be returning with local musicians entertaining in Rolleston, Leeston, Darfield and Lincoln, while Selwyn District Libraries will be hosting a variety of events over the summer. The 142nd Courtenay A&P Show was held in near perfect conditions on Saturday. Held at the Kirwee Showgrounds the show once again highlighted the best of the rural community to locals and visitors alike. Show President Ashley Seaton said he was delighted with the way the day went. “It went well and I enjoyed it immensely especially after I had got my speech out of the way,” Mr Seaton said. “While it is hard to tell I reckon the

numbers were similar to last year.” Mr Seaton said the number of entries in the sheep section were up on previous years. “It was the first time in many years that we have had the sheep pens full up.” He said he enjoyed the show as president but couldn’t have done it without the support of a hard working committee.   Form and fashion collide during the miniature horse competition

 by Kent Caddick

Darfield teenager Leah Zydenbos has helped the New Zealand Mounted Games U17 Team to a world title.

Unbeaten Leeston-Southbridge and defending champions Sefton will meet in a one-off showdown this weekend to determine which countryside will battle for a place at the national club cricket championships in Auckland.

 Darfield’s Leah Zydenbos and her mount Cheeky (centre) at the prizegiving following the New Zealand U17 team’s win at the World Mounted Games Championship in Auckland

The Rangi Ruru Girls’ School Year 11 boarder and her teammates were named World Champions at Equitana event in Auckland over the weekend. The riders compete in a variety of mounted games with New Zealand coming out on top with teams from Australia, Ireland, and England holding the next top spots in the U17 competition. Rangi Ruru’s equestrian director Pippa Young said it was a tough competition with Leah, riding her borrowed mount Cheeky, and her team going up against some of the best equestrians in the world in a very close competition.

“It was very tense in the final particularly, with two eliminations and a tie-breaker in the very last game of the competition,” she said. “Leah and her team mates worked so hard to triumph over the riders from all the other countries, with Australia, Ireland and England being particularly strong.” Ms Young said Leah was the first rider out for many of the crucial games in the final. Leah was also a key part of the school’s success at the South Island Schools’ Mounted Games held at the Ellesmere Showgrounds in April. 

Both sides had wins on Saturday in the latest round of the CRV Ambreed Country Premier one day competition. Southbrook, batting first against Leeston-Southbridge in Leeston, was in early trouble but some handy contributions from Shanan Stewart and Tom Rodden got the visitors through to 152 before being bowled out in the 37th over. In reply, the combined side knocked off the meagre total, with Liam O’Sullivan’s unbeaten half-century leading them home in the 41st over with six wickets in hand. At Weedons Domain, Sefton’s made 212/7 in their allotted 45 overs, with Lochie Stove being the best of the Weedons attack, finishing with 3/31 off eight overs. Despite a half century from Josh Watson Weedons crumbled under pressure to lose by 13 runs with four overs to spare. In other matches, Darfield-South Malvern (DSM) beat Cheviot and Oxford-Rangiora overcame Lincoln. Short scorecard: Southbrook 152 (S. Stewart 30, T. Rodden 41;

Lifestyles n’ Farming

Canterbury discovery with global potential  by Andy Bryenton

Antibiotics are familiar to anyone who has ever fallen ill with a bacterial infection — a course of medicine which helps the body fight the tiny invaders. But antibiotic resistance is a huge problem in both human and animal medicine, as pathogens develop the ability to shrug off the antibiotic onslaught. Finding out how bacteria develop a resistance to antibiotics is an important part of future medicine, and a new study from the University of Canterbury has produced interesting results which have implications for how we cultivate food as well as how we tackle ‘superbugs’. The research points to the effects of certain herbicides and how they interact with bacteria down on a microscopic level. University of Canterbury Molecular Biology and Genetics Professor Jack Heinemann of the School of Biological Sciences, in UC’s College of Science, says the key finding of the research was that “bacteria respond to exposure to the herbicides by changing how

susceptible they are to antibiotics used in human and animal medicine.” The herbicides studied are three of the most widely used in the world, including New Zealand, Professor Heinemann says. “They are among the most common manufactured chemical products to which people, pets and livestock in both rural and urban environments are exposed. These products are sold in the local hardware store and may be used without training, and there are no controls that prevent children and pets from being exposed in home gardens or parks. Despite their ubiquitous use, this University of Canterbury research

Lifestyles n’ Farming

At home on the range  by Andy Bryenton

When it comes time to choose a new vehicle for around the farm, the key factor is of course, how hard it can work. That’s the core of the equation that’s seen side-by-side, off-road machines rise in popularity versus more traditional quad bikes. And it’s one of the reasons that Polaris have updated their Ranger UTV to do even more. Already a leader in its class, the Ranger 570 has been given more of pretty much everything for its latest iteration. That begins with more space — a seating arrangement which makes it comfortable for two proper-sized Kiwi blokes. In the gap between the wraparound seating there’s more space up front for tools, the ever-important chilly bin or the dog. Then there’s a rear deck with a load area approaching that of a small farm truck, complete with numerous handy tie down points and a tough, non slip tray. No two jobs are the same however. Which is why there are so many options available to customise the Ranger 570, turning it from a serious farming tool into a machine to accompany a hunting or angling excursion. And of course, back again after the weekend. The bible-thick catalogue contains light bars, winches, roof

panels, windscreens, cabin heaters, modular waterproof storage boxes, weed and utility sprayers, wire spool holders for fencing, portable power units to run power tools, and a host of others. With more room for crew, more room for tools, and more options to tackle any task in any weather, it’s a good thing that this latest addition to the Polaris family is also kitted out with the most important accessory of all — a 570cc, 44 horsepower engine that delivers plenty of ready power and traction to all four wheels. With this big, farm-proven beating heart mounted centrally for better weight distribution, there’s no end to the combinations of clever extras which can turn the Ranger into a veritable Swiss army knife on knobbly rubber tyres. They’ve sorted the ‘go anywhere’, leaving the ‘do anything’ up to your personal choice. 

 Big on utility — Polaris roll out a bigger, more work-capable Ranger 570 to tackle those big jobs

Good life for the star of the season  by Andy Bryenton

When people mention a traditional Christmas dinner, they are often talking about the fare of the Northern Hemisphere, where winter reigns during the festive season. In ancient times, this banquet would have contained things like whole roasted lambs and suckling pigs, hams, baked fruit pies, and even the ubiquitous pudding. But one addition to the traditional board has come to us from across the Atlantic, and found its way to New Zealand. It is, of course, the Turkey — Meleagris gallopavo, a bird first domesticated not by the Pilgrim Fathers but by the Mayans, more famous for their step pyramids and golden burial treasures than their hearty roast dinners. Turkey plays a big role in the American tradition of Thanksgiving, but it’s also a centrepiece for the Christmas family

meal, and its popularity comes not just from its ability to feed a multitude of relatives around the table. Some of the best birds raised in New Zealand come from not far down the road from Christchurch, just off the Rakaia highway between Fairton and Chertsey — and what they’re famous for is their flavour. Being delicious doesn’t happen overnight. The completely free-range flock at Croziers Turkeys enjoy a life far removed from that of many other commercial poultry and there’s no denying that the proof of that freeroaming existence is there in the taste. Turkeys in the wild are foraging birds which move in large groups, inquisitively pecking and upturning scrub just as their early ancestors in Mexico’s Yucatan region did. So it goes with the flock on the Croziers’ farm — owners Kyle and Monique Smith wouldn’t have

it any other way. Their commitment to the welfare of their birds and the quality evidenced in their delicious flavour extends to insisting on milling their own feed, using organic processing methods and insisting on no additives at all. What comes out of the oven for Christmas day — and, we must stress, any time of year you’d like a delicious roast — is all turkey. In their natural habitat, from the forests of coastal Mexico all the way up to the temperate climes of the atlantic

northeast, turkeys like to enjoy the sunshine, forage, and form a communal bond with their flock mates. The colourful males with their distinctive wattles and ‘snoods’ — the technical term for the crimson, fleshy protuberance which hangs above the male turkey’s beak — take the lead in looking out for predators, while the whole flock create dust baths in which they keep clean. This natural behaviour is facilitated on the Croziers Turkeys’ farm as well, with the timetable of breeding, hatching and

laying set up to give the birds as long as possible out in good weather. The good life comes out as good taste in the finished product. Wild turkeys are prey for a variety of land carnivores in their natural range, from the coyote to the bear, but in New Zealand these birds meet a thoroughly humane end, and are celebrated by becoming the centrepiece of some of our most important culinary celebrations. To really bring out the best in your turkey, chefs recommend selecting free range — naturally — and

gently thawing your bird until it’s at room temperature before proceeding to the optional step of brining your turkey. This involves submerging the whole uncooked bird in a salty brine, with added bay leaves, thyme and garlic to taste. Those who prefer this method suggest that the brine should be as salty as sea water, and that the turkey should remain in a sealed cooking pot of brine overnight prior to roasting. Stuffing is a personal preference, and secret recipes, family favourites and

new fusion ideas abound. Remember that even when stuffed a turkey has less fat than a chicken, so keeping a little water in the roasting pan throughout the cooking process — less time consuming than you might think, at roughly 31/2 hours for a seven kilo bird. The temptation to tuck in will be strong, but letting the turkey rest for approximately a quarter hour before carving will make it even more succulent.

From halfway around the world to a prime place on the Christmas table, the turkey has come a long way. Easy to prepare, seasonally traditional and undeniably tasty, there’s no excuse not to make this big hearty bird the star of your family get together.
