The Hororata Highland Games more than justified its tag as the biggest games of its type in the Southern Hemisphere with well over 10,000 people descending on the small Selwyn township over the weekend. The sixth annual Hororata Highland Games was held in near perfect conditions at Hororata Domain on Saturday. Games event manager Cindy Driscoll said it was a wonderful occasion. “This event seems to capture people’s hearts, right from the Clan Hororata volunteers, to competitors, our sponsors, stallholders and visitors,” she said. “It has a very special atmosphere and we are already looking to how we can build on this for next year.” She said many came to the games just to have a go at some of the events like tossing a caber, sheaf or haggis as well as other challenges like archery or the Farmers Walk and ute pull. p The Hororata Highland Games now hosts one of the biggest Highland dancing competitions in the country. “All of this would not The event attracted nearly 100 was hugely impressed with the events. be possible without the Clan Hororata Highland dancers, making it one of the “It is certainly one of the best Highland volunteers,” Mrs Driscoll said. “We had a record number of people biggest Highland dancing competitions Games I have been to in the world. Drive safe over the long weekend Selwyn’s road safety coordinator Ngaire Tinning is warning locals to play it safe on the roads in the coming weeks.
p Selwyn drivers are being urged to take care around intersections
Over Canterbury Show Week, higher volumes of traffic are expected in Selwyn with many people taking time to enjoy the week’s social activities. Mrs Tinning said people will also be taking advantage of a long weekend for a break away before Christmas. “Motorists may be driving for longer periods than usual, with many also towing boats, caravans and trailers. “As all towing vehicles are restricted to 90km on the open road, it is important to keep left and pull over when it is
safe to let other vehicles pass. “When driving during busy times always allow enough time to get to your destination, drive with patience and avoid taking unnecessary risks. “Driving for longer periods than you normally would can be tiring and it is important to recognise the signs of tiredness early.” She said patience and extra concentration at intersections is important, especially when the roads are busy. ¢

Top results for Burnham rider by Kent Caddick
Young Burnham dressage rider Sophie Griffith has added to her ever growing accolades in the equestrian world.
p Burnham’s Sophie Griffith on Frangelico competing in the musical freestyle event at the North Island CDI-Y dressage competition
Sophie and her mount Frangelico recently took part in the North Island CDI-Y competition for riders under the age of 21 at Manfeild Park in Feilding which was held over two days. The 20-year-old was unlucky not to win the internationally judged individual test on the Friday, missing out on first place by just 0.2%. On the Saturday the pair took part in the musical freestyle in front of three international and two New Zealand judges. After a dressage test to music from the movie Finding Nemo Sophie came in second with a score of 67.3%. Sophie has been training Frangelico from a youngster, she is now eight years old, and one of the youngest horses competing at CDI-Y level. “It is always good when Fran does well as so much time and effort has gone into her training over the years, and this
makes it all worthwhile,” Sophie said. She has just finished her second year at Lincoln University on an Elite Equestrian scholarship and is coached by former British dressage representative Brugs Nicholls, who runs the Dressage Academy just outside Burnham. “Working with Brugs is amazing and I never seem to get into bad habits as she is always at competitions with me, which also helps to keep my stress levels down as if something goes wrong there is someone to back me up.” Sophie and Frangelico will compete in the Canterbury Championships later this year and then it’s back up to Feilding early next year for the Nationals. “It will be my last year at the CDI-Y level and I am hoping to go out with a bang.” After that the pairing will be working towards gaining Grand Prix status under the ever watchful eye of Brugs Nicholls. ¢

The Lincoln University Dairy Farm (LUDF) Open Day is run by the South Island Dairying Development Centre (SIDDC) and Fonterra. “The purpose of the day is to expose people to the transformation of ‘sunshine into food’ and answer some of their questions around the detail in the science and technology of producing milk on a farm,” SIDDC executive director Ron Pellow said. The 560 cow farm is operated by SIDDC and is run as a fully commercial demonstration farm, showcasing best practice dairy farming. “LUDF operates as both a demonstration farm for other farmers, and a commercial entity. We also have the stated aim to increase productivity on the farm without increasing the overall environmental footprint,” Mr Pellow said. “This makes the information that comes out of SIDDC very relevant for farmers

Olympic athlete blown away by games As well as setting records for numbers attending, the Hororata Highland Games also saw a number of records fall during the competitions. New Zealand Olympic shot-putter Jacko Gill set a couple of New Zealand records on his way to second place in the Oceania Heavyweight Championship event which was won by Australian athlete Luke Reynolds, who set a couple of records of his own. Jacko Gill said he was blown away by the size of the event. “I am really glad that Hororata was my first experience of Highland Games,” Gill said. “It was inspiring and I can’t wait to

I have never competed in an athletic event with such a huge crowd other than at the Olympics or Commonwealth Games.” There were 16 school teams competing in the Deep South Junior Warriors competition with a local team from Darfield High School taking out the competition. For the first time a lady won the Hororata Pie eating competition and a New Zealand record was believed to be broken for the most number of Post-it notes on a car. Meet your street this summer Over the summer Selwyn District Council’s mobile barbeque will be visiting 20 different locations giving people the chance to get to know their neighbours.
p Neighbours enjoying the chance to meet at a Meet Your Street event in Faringdon last summer
The ‘Meet your Street’ event started last summer and involved visits to 40 different neighbourhoods, many of which were new subdivisions where people were encouraged to come out and meet their neighbours. “Meet your street is a fun, informal event at a local reserve with a free sausage sizzle,” Council’s Community Resilience Coordinator Jason Flewellen said. “It’s a chance to meet new people in your neighbourhood, enjoy some music and games for the kids, while you relax and chat to your new friends. “We received some great comments from last summer’s Meet your Street event. People enjoyed the chance to form new friendships and enjoyed a summer evening out at a local park.” Mr Flewellen said Meet your Street helps new residents settle into their
community and form connections with their neighbours which helps to build stronger communities. “Knowing your neighbours also helps create safer communities and enables people to be better prepared to cope with a civil defence emergency where neighbours may be called on to help each other out,” he said. Meet your Street sessions are being planned for Lincoln, Rolleston, Kirwee, Prebbleton, West Melton, Leeston and Darfield, and for more information go to the ‘Meet Your Street Selwyn’ Facebook page. Council also has small grants of up to $50 available which people can apply for if they would like to host their own neighbourhood ‘Meet Your Street’ event. Applications are open until March 31 and for more information on the funding go to www.selwyn.govt.nz. ¢

Lincoln scholars reveal their plans to change the world Childhood obesity, food waste, and palm oil are just some of the issues that a group of Lincoln University scholars will be discussing at a public lecture on campus next month. The students, who are part of Lincoln’s Global Challenges Scholarships Programme, have spent the year working on social enterprise projects aimed at tackling some of the world’s most pressing issues. “This event is a chance for the public to hear from the next generation of sociallyminded tertiary students as they share their ideas on how we can address some key problems that affect our future,” says Global Challenges Scholarship Manager Fiona Scott. Some of the projects in the spotlight include a drive to minimise food waste, a plan to encourage young people to look after waterways in their area, and a programme to create a link between urban recreationalists and rural farmers. Other ventures involve reducing demand for palm oil by creating easy ways of finding alternative products, investigating whether genetically engineered food is the answer to feeding a growing population, promoting healthy eating while encouraging children to get active, and educating people about their food consumption choices. The event, called ‘Tomorrow’s Change Makers — Global Challenges Scholars’, is part of a year-long lecture series known simply as Change Makers, whereby Lincoln professors inform the public about their areas of expertise.

Lifestyle Blocks
It takes two to tango
Save Lives
by Andy Bryenton
This spring, Kioti has unleashed a new power combo for the small-block and small-farm market — a pair of machines to cut down on chores and project time. As one owner says — ‘they eliminate the backache’. Using the same powerful but compact three-cylinder diesel motor (no RUCs on the farm, of course), the Mechron sideby-side and the 2610 mini tractor are a duo perfect for carting soil, moving stock feed, riding the boundaries, weeding and spraying, slasher mowing or even planting out a whole orchard. The Mechron is a side-by-side UTV which packs in the features of a conventional off-road farm working

machine with the heart — and rugged frame — of a tractor. While some UTVs are essentially scaled up from quad bike origins, the Kioti Mechron is scaled down from a full-sized agricultural workhorse. This means capacious load spaces, including a tipping tray, 1,000cc of diesel torque and the ability to customise for all weathers, or for spraying, fencing or feedout tasks. It’s complemented perfectly by the other small-block weapon in Kioti’s arsenal — the CS 2610. Once again fired up by a modern three-piston diesel, this little tractor makes up for in versatility what it lacks in sheer bulk. That’s a good thing in the rows of an orchard, on unstable terrain or when you need to mow or dig in tight confines. The optional 4-in-1 bucket, backhoe and slasher make this a Swiss army knife on wheels.

Kioti users say that the combination of the Mechron and 2610 makes the difference between walking indoors after a long day on the land — or crawling in with aches and pains! In a growing sector of the property market where it’s easy to metaphorically bite off more chores than you can chew, owning a pair of machines which lug soil, dig holes, channel irrigation, move feed and carry fending gear is a big asset. Lifestyle blocks are a popular option for retirees looking to get closer to the land and many underestimate the need for heavy duty gear to achieve the ‘good life’ — just ask a commercial farmer! Both the Mechron and CS 2610 are available via Power Farming in Christchurch or Ashburton — stop by and talk about your options with the team soon! ¢

Courtenay A&P Show
Show a family affair by Kent Caddick
Like many Courtenay A&P Show presidents before him Raymond Williams has a long family connection with the show, but for the 2016 President that includes the present as well as the past.

His maternal great-grandfather George Bedford was the first in the family to take on the Show President’s mantle in 1896, followed by Raymond’s grandfather, George Raymond-Bedford in 1933. In 1984 Raymond’s father Hugh Williams took on the role while in 2005 his mother Helen became the first female President of the Courtenay A&P Show. This year both his parents are assisting once again in the running of the show and he has also been joined by his sisters Rebecca Ramsay-Smith and Jocelyn Thrower in organising this year’s event. Raymond, who is a key account manager with Balance Agri-Nutrients for the top half of the South Island, grew up on the family farm near Kirwee, which was initially a beef and sheep operation before turning to cropping in the late 1970s. “I remember running around the show as a kid and playing on all the sideshow games and having a great time. It was always a real family affair.” That is the atmosphere Raymond hopes to keep for this year’s show. “We really want the show to appeal to families and we have kept the ticket price low to reflect that, with just $10 for adults and children under 16 free. “We want an atmosphere where parents can bring their kids and let them run around and enjoy the experience in a safe environment.” Raymond lives with his wife JulieAnn Johnson and their three children, Sophie (14), Patrick (11) and Sebastian (10), on a 10ha lifestyle block near Charing Cross. As a pupil at Darfield High School he began helping his parents to organise the show and as a student at Lincoln

CUT DOWN – consider removing tall trees that could fall through power lines. TRIM EARLY – if you can’t cut down the tree, keep remaining trees trimmed to at least 2.5m from low voltage lines or at least 4m from high voltage lines. Ideally further. BE SAFE – please call Orion on 0800 363 9898 for a list of qualified contractors. PLANT WISELY – ask us about safe planting distances and power line friendly trees and shrubs. oriongroup.co.nz

the way in which young builders and carpenters are trained. At the forefront of this change has been ITAB — the Industry Training Association for Building. Teaming up with polytechnics to blend the best of academic and hands-on learning, this initiative was the brainchild of the Certified Builders Association, along with several large building companies and tertiary institutes. It’s no surprise that the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology and the Ara Institute of Canterbury are big supporters, helping get up-andcoming builders into the programme — free of charge in some cases. With a combination of theoretical study and actual real world experience, the ITAB course builds toward the nationally recognised National Certificate in Carpentry Level 4. Employers are keen to enlist graduates of this programme, which boasts ‘New Zealand’s most

employable apprentices’. After four years of theory and practice, including plenty of time working closely with building professionals on real sites, graduates have built up a formidable arsenal of skills. As in most fields of human endeavour, the ITAB students have found a way to test their mettle against one another, with the organisation holding both regional and national competitions to find the best of the best. This year’s challenge in Canterbury saw apprentices competing to build against the clock, tackling projects such as wall framing, staircases and more. Young builder Mark Johnston came out

So it’s appropriate that the finished products of this competition will be used to help train future apprentices through ITAB,” said Certified Builders Chief Executive, Grant Florence. “With housing availability in New Zealand such a major issue, ensuring that there are enough high quality, qualified builders is vital for the country.” ¢

Building a Cantastic Christmas Selwyn libraries are calling on local residents to help those less fortunate over Christmas. The libraries have launched a Cantastic Christmas Tree programme, which residents can donate a can of food to which will go to families in need. Simone Hindin of Selwyn libraries said last year they had decorated Christmas trees at the libraries but this year they wanted to do something different. “We wanted to be able to give something back to the communities which use our libraries,” she said. “We spoke to the people at the Ellesmere Food Bank Trust with our
idea of building Christmas trees out of donated canned goods and they thought the idea was worthwhile. “So each of our libraries in Lincoln, Leeston, Rolleston and Darfield will be taking donations of canned goods and building them into Christmas trees, with the goods then being distributed back into the communities from where they were collected.” Ms Hindin said the donations must be in cans, non-perishable, within the useby or best-by date and with the original label. Donations for the Cantastic Christmas Tree can be made up until December 20. ¢
