Selwyn United Football Club’s first-ever 10th Grade football festival event has been pronounced a success after the event attracted 400 players, 39 teams and dozens of support volunteers last weekend. Club President, Darren Sudlow, said the threeday tournament, which is restricted to players 10 years old this year, drew teams from throughout the South Island, including from the tournament’s previous host region, Nelson. Mr Sudlow said the goal of the tournament was to give young players the taste of what it feels like to play in a tournament, without putting the focus on competitiveness. “For girls and boys of that age, it is more around giving them an opportunity for fun and experience, rather than winning being the end motivation.” Over the course of the event, the 39 teams took part in a total of 121 games at the Selwyn’s main football venue Rolleston’s Foster Park. The tournament was divided into three sections, p Rolleston’s Foster Park was the venue for Selwyn’s United FC’s first-ever hosting of the South Island 10th Grade Football Festival last week. Algal bloom warning The Community and Public Health division of Canterbury District Health Board has issued a health warning after potentially toxic blue-green algae (planktonic cyanobacteria) was found in Lake Forsyth/Te Roto o Wairewa. People and animals, particularly dogs, should avoid the water until the health warning has been lifted. Canterbury Medical Officer of Health, Dr Alistair Humphrey, says the bloom can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals. “Exposure may cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, tingling and numbness around the mouth and fingertips — if you experience any of these symptoms visit your doctor immediately. No one should drink the water from the lake at any time. Boiling the water does not remove the toxin. “Animals that show signs of illness after coming into contact with algal mats should be taken to a vet immediately. “Fish and shellfish can concentrate toxins, and their consumption should be avoided. If fish are eaten, remove the gut and liver and wash in clean water.” Environment Canterbury monitors the lake, and the public will be advised of any changes in water quality that are of public health significance.

MP critical of traffic decision Traffic lights at the intersection on State Highway 73 at West Melton will not go ahead, according to information received by Selwyn MP Amy Adams. “I was shocked to learn from the New Zealand Transport Agency that the proposed improvements have not been included in the National Land Transport Programme 2018–21,” Ms Adams said. “In response to my request for an update on when the proposed improvements would be carried out, I received a letter from the NZTA stating that they did not meet the required threshold for funding. This is in spite of the fact that I was advised in June by NZTA that the agency had identified the need for traffic lights and signals at the intersection of SH73 and Weedons Ross Road and that these improvements had been recommended for inclusion in both the 2018/21 Regional and Land Transport programmes.” “I am incredulous at this decision by NZTA not to prioritise funding for this project. Growing traffic volumes at this intersection are already causing safety concerns for the West Melton community, and the effects are likely to be compounded once the second phase of the Christchurch Southern Motorway is complete,” Ms Adams said.
p Amy Adams Selwyn MP
“I am concerned that this decision may be a consequence of the current government’s decision to cut $5 billion of funding from regional highways in favour of funding trams in Auckland. We are paying more than ever in petrol taxes, but necessary road safety work is not being carried out. It is not acceptable.” ¢

Jeraldine (Jerry) Teng loves her job, and for a very good reason; it gives Bellyful Selwyn’s new branch coordinator the chance to give something back to the community that welcomed her so warmly earlier this year.
It was an emotional experience for the 100 invited dignitaries, staff and Canterbury DHB members who gathered at Christchurch Hospital last Friday for the official blessing of the hospital’s new outpatient building in Oxford Terrace.
It’s not just the job she is in love with — it is the Selwyn community itself. Born in Singapore and has travelled the world and moved to Rolleston from the North Island in June this year, Jerry says she and her husband settled in Selwyn because she was impressed by the family-friendly nature of the community. “When we saw that kids were able to walk their dogs and play in the parks on their p Jerry Teng Rolleston branch manager own we thought this was a very safe and cohesive community. children who are struggling with illness People seemed to look after each or where there is little or no family or other, and that was something we were social support. looking for.” Started by Jacquie Ritchie in 2009, Jerry was also looking for some the organisation last year cooked and way to give something back to the delivered 19,407 meals to 3,442 district. Coes Ford gates to ensure visitor safety
u by Mike Isle
New gates have been installed at Coes Ford to help ensure the safety of visitors to the area during high river flow events. The Selwyn District Council installed the gates after discussions with the local fire chiefs and residents of the area who were concerned that many visitors are unaware of the risks the Selwyn river poses during high river flows. Council asset manager, Murray Washington, said most locals were well aware that significant amounts of rain in the foothills can lead to high river flows in the Selwyn river, but that visitors to Selwyn are often not attuned to the associated risks. “Many local residents know that flooding at Coes Ford can occur up to 12 hours after the rain has stopped in the foothills. However, visitors to our district cannot be expected to know that. The river can rise without any sign of rain at Coes Ford. The only way we can ensure visitors’ safety is by preventing them from crossing the ford during times of high flows, and

moving them on from the camping area altogether during Civil Defence emergencies,” Mr Washington said. Mr Washington acknowledged that when the gates were closed — this will mean locals will need to use alternative and often longer routes to travel into Christchurch City or to other parts of the district. “We understand that this could be an inconvenience and we thank local residents in advance for their patience and support.” The decision to close the Coes Ford gates will be based on Environment Canterbury river flow data, and only if significant rain in the foothills is likely to cause high and dangerous river flows. Previously, during Civil Defence events, the camping areas of the Coes Ford campground could be gated off, but the ford itself could still be accessed. ¢

The history of Canterbury and Christchurch is one with many distinctive stories to tell — tales of courage through adversity and triumph over the odds.
p The Kate Sheppard Memorial, by the Avon, commemorates just one of Canterbury’s historic stories
From October 12–22 BECA Heritage week offers a closer look at some of those landmark moments, this year concentrating on the theme of courageous communities. It’s not just the rise of Christchurch after the recent earthquakes which is in the spotlight, as more than 70 distinctive events, exhibitions and displays unfold across Selwyn, Christchurch and Banks Peninsula. The scars of World War One, the ‘Great War’ are explored 100 years on from the armistice, which silenced the guns on the Western Front. A closer look is taken at the struggle for a voice, and a place in democracy crusaded for by the brave suffragettes 125 years ago.
This topic includes a compelling and diverse contemporary art display titled We Do This as well as an exhibition of media, photojournalism and more from the era when Kate Sheppard put New Zealand ahead of the world and led a successful campaign to make women’s voices heard in the halls of government. It is a week steeped in history and one during which most of these events are free of charge. The fund was established earlier this year to support events and other activities that contribute to community wellbeing, bringing communities together and attracting visitors to the Selwyn district. It brings together the former Community Events Fund along with new financing under a new contestable funding application process. “The Selwyn Community Fund is a valuable way for council to support community groups doing exciting, positive things in our district,” says community relations manager, Denise Kidd. “We’ve been pleased to be able to boost the pool of funding available, and hopefully assist more groups.”
The fund is open to any recognised organisations whose principal functions or activities are of a charitable or not-for-profit nature. Goals include increasing participation and engagement in community life, celebrating Selwyn’s uniqueness, building community capacity, promoting opportunities for volunteering, encouraging initiatives that build neighbourliness and community spirit. Applications are open year-round, with funding allocated in two rounds each year. The first closes on Wednesday, October 31. Full details on eligibility and criteria, along with an online application form, are at selwyn. govt.nz/selwyncommunityfund.

The world of wearable arts is more than just a fusion of fashion and avant-garde creativity. Drawing from the zeitgeist of costume design, postmodern painting, a dizzying array of retro fashion trends and the full spectrum of human expression, it’s hard to know what to expect from this break-out new art form, which is taking the country by storm. From Wellington to Waipu and Dargaville in the north and now to Selwyn in the south, crowds have been thrilled by the scope of vision on display. Fostering inspiration in this medium locally is Art Couture New Zealand, who are gearing up this week for their biggest, brightest show to date. 2018’s entrants will have a lot of live up to when compared against the vivid colours and mesmerising use of materials on the runway in 2017 — but organisers and designers, models and stage crew have been working hard to present a truly world-class show this Saturday, October 13 at the Lincoln Events Centre. Some of the challenging categories this year include incorporating hardware, recycled materials, and a ‘mystery bag’ of eclectic items into a wearable work of art. All of those involved in creating this very special event would like to invite the public to come along and witness artwork, which complements, celebrates, enhances and redefines the

Countdown to December is on u by Andy Bryenton
It may seem like a long way from the dawn of daylight savings time to the holidays — and for many of us, it represents the busiest time of the year. It’s worth noting that, as you read this publication, a mere 10 weeks separate you from Santa’s sleigh bells. A whole geological age if you’re school kid, but very little time indeed if you’re planning a big project around the house or garden before the relatives arrive or it’s time to take advantage of the sunny weather. Every year, our local tradespeople are inundated with last-second requests from those who have not planned ahead. Sometimes they can be accommodating, but in a busy season, it’s hard to squeeze in one last bathroom conversion, one last kitchen upgrade or a final house lot of carpet before those sleigh bells start ringing. For the sake of your own sanity and theirs, please take daylight savings as a final warning and get talking to your plumbers, roofers, electricians, builders,
gas fitters, flooring professionals and other experts. Right now, a well-ordered list of jobs is just as important as having plenty to do, and if you call early, you’ll be able to fit into the schedule and have your work happily completed by summertime. It is doubly true if what you have planned is contingent on clear, sunny weather — like a reroofing project. A long, wet spring has pushed schedules hard, so book in as early as possible, even

A warning from all our qualified tradespeople — at this time of year, with many professionals stretched thin — unlicensed and untrained amateurs are often active, angling for some illicit work. Remember that for your own safety, your insurance, and your home’s resale value, it’s illegal to hire tradespeople without the appropriate qualifications to

Whether your plans are big or small — a redecoration, refurbishment or a major renovation — the clock is ticking to finish them for 2018. Our hard-working tradespeople are ready to help, but their numbers are limited, and many jobs take time, including in some cases, time for the council to approve your plans. SPRING SALE CONTINUES!

Summer is well on its way, and around the country, people are preparing their itineraries for holiday getaways. From family camping trips to fishing excursions and off-road adventures, many of these vacation ideas involve towing some kind of heavy load — so it’s time to get set now to ensure a safe journey. Road safety and police authorities here and abroad identify five main issues which should be looked at by those about to tow — especially seeing as most of us spend the majority of the year without a trailer hitched on behind the family wagon. Taking care of all five will greatly reduce the risk of an accident. First, make sure your tow vehicle is up to the task. It sounds simple, but towing a heavy load puts a strain on the engine, brakes, suspension and tyres of your car. You may have a WOF, but it’s good to visually check the state of brake pads and rotors, the solidity of your tow bar, the state of your tyre tread and the fluid in your transmission before hitching up. Secondly, make sure to test the lights when you connect your trailer. That is the number one biggest mistake seen on the road when towing — faulty, poorly connected or plain broken lights, which mean traffic behind has no idea of your intentions. Once again, an easy two-person test can save a huge hassle. Then comes the threat of items flying off and away in your slipstream. You can never have too many tie downs, and they are literally cheaper to buy in bulk. For those trailers full of camping supplies, cover the whole mass with a tarp then cross over with ratcheting straps, tucking the tarp into the trailer body. The fourth piece of advice from the road authorities may surprise you — brush up on the towing rules. There are

Ashburton A&P Show A show for the whole family u by Andy Bryenton
For 141 years, the yearly Ashburton A&P show has been a red-letter day on the local calendar, bringing town and country together. to the fun will be a variety of equine events as well as a local speciality — sheepdog trials. Of course, some of the most legendary dogs in this demanding sport hail from Canterbury and its old ancestral sheep stations. An A&P show is, above all else, a family day. That’s why among the competitions for adults — from best
preserves to biggest veggies, perfect poultry to tenacious shearing feats — there’s also plenty on site for the kids. Moreover, plenty to eat and drink, too. Not to mention highland dancing, magic shows, live music, a massive indoor and outdoor market — really, it may very well take both days to see and experience all that’s on offer. ¢

Meet the royal family u by Andy Bryenton
Back in 1982, farming was a simpler trade in many ways. Nevertheless, the same challenges were on the mind of rural workers. The trusty two-wheeled farm bike had definitely replaced the horse, but when it came to lugging tools and equipment to far-flung quarters of the farm, something new was needed.
Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

Enter Whanganui Suzuki importer, Rod Coleman, who told the top engineers back at Suzuki headquarters exactly what farmers were asking for. What came back was a machine with four wheels rather than two, building on Suzuki’s already proven track record with off-road bikes and with small off-road cars. It was christened the LT125, and it started a revolution. Today, after 35 years, Suzuki still manufacture some of the hardiest quads in the business, with the hardearned name ‘king quad’ blazoned on the side. From the bulletproof and largely original layout of the LT-F300F through to the top-of-the-tree LT-A750XP, all share a common heritage and have been developed over those three decades using the same process which gave rise to the ‘granddaddy’, the original LT125. Suzuki listens to their customers, and make improvements to suit. That’s why, while the LT-A750XP — with its big bore, single overhead cam 722cc engine and power steering —
seems a far cry from the simple original, it’s still designed primarily for farm work. It’s been designed to be easy to maintain, with a single cylinder liquid cooled engine placed low in the frame for stability. Designed with plenty of low-down torque, and despite adopting the latest CVT transmission, it still offers high and low ratios and engine braking for safety and security when the going gets rough. Electronic fuel injection has increased both power and fuel economy, while power steering has made it easier
to handle and more comfortable to command during those long days of work. Underneath it all — and underpinning the entire Suzuki quad family — is the sense that these machines were not made for racing, recreation or style. From day one, all the way back in the 1980s, these quads have been tuned up for the Kiwi farm. It’s a singular purpose — but then again, farming here is like nowhere else on earth, and it pays to have the right tool for the job. ¢
