Jason is an amateur photographer who works professionally at an architectural firm in Christchurch. “The photos were captured from the back porch of our new home in Preston Downs,” Jason said. “A series of images were chosen from hundreds captured between 11pm and 1am. Totality, that is where the moon is covered completely by Earth’s umbra (shadow), occurred at 11.27pm. This is when the moon appears at its most red. “Even though I am currently nursing an injury I had set an alarm to make sure that I didn’t miss it as it is something I have not witnessed myself. Usually Canterbury tends to miss out on these type of events.” Jason said he has been interested in photography for some time but has

only recently been getting more serious about it. “I am completely self-taught and have joined the local West Melton Photography Group as well as being a member of ‘Flickr’, a worldwide website for avid photographers. “In the last 12 months I have noticed significant improvement in the quality of my work and have been accumulating additional lenses and equipment over time. “I have always had an interest p Jason Clark and fiancée Candice in photography and would practise taking photos of cars amongst other to his fiancée Candice winning a cash things using my parents’ digital point prize. With around 20 stalls offering a variety of goods, organiser Sue Benzie says she’s delighted with the number of people involved both in running the market and attending it. “I’m really pleased. The locals are supporting it and we’ve had good numbers” she said. “People sat around drinking coffee and talking. Kids were running around and playing together. It’s about people coming together as a community.”

With a number of enticing food stalls there was plenty to choose from for breakfast or brunch including Cornish pasties, pork pies, bacon butties, German breads and pastries and Italian cheeses. Plants, aromatherapy oils and Avon cosmetics were some of the other products for sale. The market is held each Saturday from 9am to noon at St Paul’s Church grounds. ¢

West Melton 150th ticket give away The Record has a double pass to give away to the two premiere events being held over Labour Weekend to mark West Melton’s 150year anniversary. We have a double pass to the West Melton Black Tie Ball on Friday, October 24 and a double pass to The Great Westie Shindig on Saturday, October 25 to give away.

To be in the draw to win one of these sought after double passes you must answer this question: “Who is widely regarded as the first settler of West Melton, naming the town after his home town in England?” Email your answer to news@ therecord.co.nz along with your name, address and phone number by 5pm, Monday, October 20.

The demonstrations of wheat threshing, ploughing, butter churning and other activities of the period were fantastic and a very vivid reminder of how physically demanding life was for ordinary people back in those days. I think it was especially great that so many school students were given the opportunity to experience this educational event. There is no doubt that those first settlers who made West Melton their home would be astonished to see the changes in the area over those intervening 150 years. Traditionally the West Melton and Halkett area was mainly dedicated to sheep and crop farming (such as grain and potatoes). West Melton has also had a long association with the horse racing industry. More recently the area has seen a proliferation of small lifestyle blocks,

and developed a growing reputation for its vineyards, olive groves, nut orchards, and art studios and galleries. This larger population base is bringing with it a corresponding increase in new facilities such as a planned new supermarket and shopping complex. However, one thing that has not changed over the years is the strong sense of community in West Melton. This is evident in the enthusiasm with which the West Melton Residents Association has embraced the 150th milestone in planning a weekend of real community celebrations at Labour Weekend. I would like to thank all of those involved for their hard work in organising the various events and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at Labour Weekend. ¢

Rapid numbers help in emergency All rural property owners in Selwyn are being asked to ensure they have a rapid number displayed at their driveway entrance.

Water supply upgrade completed A major upgrade to the Darfield water supply has been completed providing extra capacity to service the growing town.

p This rural property near Rolleston has its Rapid number clearly displayed at the entrance

Known as the Rural Address Property Identification system or RAPID the four-digit rapid numbers are found on blue plastic posts and are used by emergency services to help identify the exact address of a rural property. Selwyn District Council’s emergency management officer Ryan O’Rourke said having a rapid number is essential as it gives every rural property an identifiable address. “Rapid numbers are particularly useful for emergency services such as police, ambulance, fire and civil defence, as they make it easier to find rural properties. “It is a good idea to write your rapid number down close to your phone so it is easy to access in an emergency.” Mr O’Rourke said summer is the high-risk season for fires in Selwyn, especially in rural areas, so the

council is also encouraging people to ensure their driveways are wide enough to allow emergency vehicles in and out. “It is also important to ensure that your driveway or yard entrance is wider than four by four metres to allow enough room for emergency vehicles like a fire tanker to access your property and turn around if they need to.” Mr O’Rourke said as many new families have recently moved to Selwyn, it’s possible not every rural property will have a rapid number. “Any rural property that does not have a number should request one. Rapid numbers are not used in townships and urban properties do not need a number.” Rural property owners can request or replace a rural rapid number by filling out an online form at www. selwyn.govt.nz/rapidnumber.

p Selwyn District Council water services team leader Andy Olivier in front of the new Darfield Reservoir

The upgrade included the development of two deep ground-water bores, a 1000m3 concrete reservoir and a booster pumping station. “The bores sources water from deep underground, meaning that the water is naturally filtered providing a secure and safe supply of water,” Selwyn District Council’s water services asset manager Murray England said. He said the two bores were necessary to provide sufficient water to meet peak summer demand now and in the future as the town grows. “The second bore was also necessary in case a pump failure occurs so that Darfield can continue to be supplied with deep ground water.” The reservoir provides the town with increased water storage capacity and Mr England said it will also help to reduce a problem with entrained (trapped) air

NEED LOCALLY PRODUCED FOOD?

that was affecting some resident’s internal plumbing. “The entrained air was becoming trapped within some household’s hot water cylinders and internal plumbing, and this meant that the system was prone to ‘spluttering,’ especially when taps were first turned on. “Now that the upgrade has been completed, water is stored in the reservoir where the air is released before it is pumped into the reticulation.” Historically, Darfield was supplied from shallow wells next to the Waimakariri River. This water was chlorinated and subject to strict water restrictions during times of low river flow. Mr England said testing of the town’s new bore sources has proven the ground water quality to be suitable for supply without treatment and the water quality complies with national Drinking Water Standards. ¢

West Melton 150th Celebration 1864-2014

A community for the future u by Ian Sandford, West Melton Celebration Committee chairman

Welcome to the West Melton 150th celebrations. West Melton has, as have so many rural villages in Canterbury, undergone many changes in its history. This has been reflected by the many and varied entries and displays for both the Labour Weekend celebrations and the Time After Time Field Day in September. As the saying goes — from a small seed a mighty Kauri tree grows. The first seed was in the form of a carpenter from Fendal Town in the new settlement of Christchurch who bought the first residential site in what we now know as West Melton. Henry Trickett, having bought that first site, named the area West Melton, after his birth place in Yorkshire. From that seed a rural support village established itself which included a hotel, blacksmiths and a general store. There are families still living in West Melton whose grandparents lived here while many more moved here for so many different reasons. Recently Colin Watson, our local historian, gave an overview of the history of West Melton at a meeting of the West Melton Probus Club. In concluding he mentioned that the 150th anniversary was coming up. As a consequence of Colin’s address, a steering group was established to investigate the possibility of celebrating the 150th anniversary. The steering group held a public meeting

to establish a formal committee and fortunately the West Melton Residents Association agreed to be the formal structure. From there a series of specialised teams concentrated on various areas, reporting to the core committee. The Celebration Committee consists of individuals of all backgrounds. We all hope that the celebration activities act as a unifying effect for all — old timers, newcomers, and people of all ages. This will be typified in the unveiling of a plaque dedicated to the proposed West Melton Community and Recreation Centre, signifying the future, and the St Paul’s Anglican church cemetery walk celebrating the past. As chairman of the West Melton Celebration Committee it is my hope and that of the committee, that the sense of a unified community continues beyond these celebrations. ¢

West Melton’s 150th celebrations promise to be an exciting time for the community. The celebrations are an opportunity to look back at the past and recognise the hard work done by early settlers to establish the town and also celebrate how the town has developed since it was founded. The Time after Time Field Days in September was a great opportunity for old and new residents to come together and showcase West Melton’s farming history. Congratulations to the organisers of this fantastic community event which drew people from far and wide to join your celebrations. You now have before you a series of anniversary events including the Black Tie Ball, Grand Parade, Mix and Mingle, The Great Westie Shindig, a dedication service for a new West Melton Recreation and Events Centre, and a Sport and Recreation Fun Day. These events will provide exciting activities for families and a rare chance

to experience what it may have been like in West Melton’s early days. Look out for the traction engines, farm machinery, impressive beards and nineteenth century ball gowns on display as part of the heritage theme. There will also be gymnasts, art and craft stalls, top team competitions, football, tennis and lawn bowls and more to keep you entertained. Whether you are already part of the West Melton community or a visitor I would like to extend a warm welcome to you as you join the celebrations. I am sure you will enjoy the wide range of events planned as part of the anniversary. However, these events don’t just happen and we must acknowledge the work of the various committee and volunteers for their achievements in putting together a range of activities for us all to enjoy. Congratulations. ¢

Synlait gets Chinese green light

Private Wool Buyers & Exporters

Selwyn dairy giant Synlait Milk has received approval from China to manufacture retail-ready infant formula for the Chinese market.

The only wool buyers that look after your interests.

Synlait’s managing director Dr John Penno said the registration is a major milestone for the business, and adds to its existing registration as a manufacturer of general dairy products and infant formula base powders for export to China, granted in May 2014. “Being able to manufacture and export high quality finished infant formula products to China will help Synlait Milk deliver on its value added strategy, and provides an important confidence boost for our China business where we see significant opportunity for future earnings.” Synlait Milk’s application for registration was sent to the Chinese regulatory authority following the approval of its Risk Management Programme by the Ministry for Primary Industries for its dry blending and consumer packaging plant.

Synlait’s state-of-the-art plant at Dunsandel has a processing capacity of 30,000 metric tonnes per annum, or up to 110 cans a minute. “Our dry blending and consumer packaging plant is a key part of our strategy,” Dr Penno said. “We now have an integrated facility on one site in which gives us full manufacturing and packaging control, and delivers on the needs of our infant formula customers for a complete, integrated supply chain solution, from raw milk sourcing and collection through to manufacturing and retail packaging.” The plant is capable of processing a range of can sizes, including 400 gram and 900 gram cans, and is designed for expansion into other packaging formats, such as sachets. ¢

Financed primarily from Ministry of Agriculture grants, early research concentrated on tractor safety frame testing, fencing, carcass disposal, farm water supply and agricultural aviation. In 1979, NZAEI opened a second research division in Ruakura, Hamilton. Lincoln Ventures Ltd was created in 1994 through merging NZAEI, the Kellogg Farm Management Unit and the Centre for Resource Management. Lincoln Agritech chief executive Peter Barrowclough said in 2012, the company changed its name to Lincoln Agritech Ltd. “That was to better reflect its unique position as an independent agritechfocussed science and engineering research company owned by New Zealand’s only specialist land-based university, Lincoln University. “From early beginnings as New Zealand’s first research based agricultural engineering organisation, Lincoln Agritech’s role was primarily in evaluating and developing agricultural and horticultural machinery. “It has since expanded to become a leading

Ravensdown to build new office

The

Leading Canterbury agricultural fertiliser company Ravensdown has unveiled plans for a new office building at its Hornby site.

Read the newspaper online

The building is scheduled for completion by August 2015. The farmer-owned co-operative, which won the annual Champion Canterbury award for large manufacturer in September, moved its head office from Dunedin to Christchurch in 1997. After the 2011 earthquake, 120 staff moved out from its damaged leased office space in Oxford Terrace to makeshift buildings on land that it owned in Hornby. “We wanted to stay in Christchurch and the fact that we own a large piece of under-used land next to our fertiliser manufacturing plant in Hornby means we have growing room and an economical solution in terms of space and parking,” Ravensdown chief executive Greg Campbell said. “Of course, communication with the manufacturing team has also improved since the days when we leased offices in the CBD. The staff has shown great resilience working in a maze of portacoms for over three years,” he said. The 1,700 sqm new single-storey

The whole Ravensdown site including the manufacturing plant is 14 hectares

and has housed a superphosphate factory since 1922. It can make 245 tonnes of superphosphate a day which is used by farmers throughout the South Island to improve the fertility of their soil. At peak production, the plant can also generate 1.8 megawatts of electricity which can be put back on to the national grid. ¢

Our delicate dairy economy

A drop in dairy prices of 48% from February this year is now impacting on the New Zealand economy, with economists now predicting Fonterra’s $5.30 payout prediction will drop again to $4.80 if there is not a lift in product values by March of next year. Regional economies, with a drop of $3.70 per kilogram of milk solids would face disastrous shortfalls measured in billions of dollars. It has been said that for every dollar a dairy farmer receives, it adds three

times more value by the time it goes through the community. How the experts work that out, I don’t know, but if it is true there would be an impact in the South Island dairying regions of a staggering proportions. I recently attended a Fonterra farmer meeting and the big surprise to me was the small number of suppliers who attended the gathering, in light of the decline of dairy farmer fortunes. It was a pity because in spite of all the bad news caused by the volatility in the world markets, I believe Fonterra is doing a lot of positive things to increase its market share throughout the world, avoiding a major reliance solely on the Chinese market. Joint ventures in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia are turning Fonterra, since its formation from being an $11 billion earner to a $22 billion earner, making it, I believe, the cornerstone of the New Zealand economy.

Some farmers at the meeting expressed their extreme concern at Fonterra continuing to undertake huge costly development programmes overseas when dairy farmer payouts are now suffering a serious decline. Farmers expressed criticism at Fonterra spending some $23 million

I believe Fonterra is “doing a lot of positive things to increase its market share throughout the world …

in their new Farm Source development which will include the restructuring of its RD1 stores throughout New Zealand. Fonterra director Malcolm Bailey in explaining this development said that this Farm Source development would mean better buying power for Fonterra

shareholders and suppliers, including greater fuel and electricity savings and discounts on purchases. He explained that the current market volatility was caused by the European and the United States’ ban on exports to Russia and this was a great concern because Russia is the European community’s biggest purchaser of dairy products. Now this European product can be diverted to other world markets, putting pressure on Fonterra’s market share. There is also currently a weak demand for dairy products from China. While we are mindful of the current concerns, we know the industry has never been without financial risk or market fluctuations. It is important that we dairy farmers support Fonterra’s farmer co-operative ownership structure and maintain the initiative and enterprise that is required to achieve the outcomes we all desire. ¢

Farm Source: together as one u by Joanne Speechly

A new Fonterra initiative aims to forge closer links between the dairy co-operative and its 11,000 farmer suppliers across the country. Farm Source combines service, support, rewards, digital technology and financial options for farmers, together with local hubs to support the major dairying regions. Chairman John Wilson said it’s about taking its relationship with farmers to a new level. “We have been talking to our farmers about what we can do to further support them and their businesses, and we challenged ourselves to come up with ways we could get in behind them. Cooperatives have always been about unity and collective strength and we have a lot of both.” CEO Theo Spierings said Farm Source is much stronger than the sum of its parts. “Ultimately, we see Farm Source as setting the benchmark when it comes to supporting farmers and providing exclusive benefits beyond the milk price. It’s about working together to grow and succeed and reach our ambition of global relevance.”

Launched in Methven last week, the Farm Source package includes: •• Seventy-one Farm Source hubs •• Farm Store rewards to bring down the cost of farm supplies and services •• Farm Store ‘dollars’ to return farmers a share of profits •• In-store and online farm supplies •• Farm Source digital for farmers to manage their business with the co-operative •• Financial tools for managing shares, capital and business Farmers of New Zealand operations director and farming columnist, Bill Guest, says Farm Source is a lot bigger than a rebrand of Fonterra’s existing network of RD1 stores. “This is about shareholder pride and the new clean colours emphasise the overall Fonterra brand, which is seriously lacking in the current stores. “Farm Source offers some significant financial tools to help farmers do business better.“ ¢

GARDENING

Spring gardening safety tips u by Steve Sheppard

As the trend towards growing your own fruit and vegetables continues its resurgence with Kiwi gardeners, it is timely to highlight some simple safety messages according to an industry expert. Nursery and Garden Industry Association of New Zealand chief executive Dr John Liddle says soil is rich with living organisms which are beneficial to plants and generally cause no harm to animals or people.

“Soil does however, contain some organisms that are not beneficial such as a type of Legionella bacteria which is commonly found in the environment. In rare cases this can cause Legionnaire’s disease.

6 Questions you should ask yourself before choosing your next plant supplier...

1. Is the nursery a reputable one, with a great track record? - YES! 2. Will the stock quality be second to none? - OF COURSE! 3. Can I get a free quote on my landscape plan? - ABSOLUTELY! 4. Will I get really great value for money? - YOU BET! 5. Are staff experienced and able to offer great advice? - YES! 6. Can stock be freighted locally and nationwide? - NO PROBLEM!

Kids in the Garden With the warm weather upon us, what better way to get the kids outside than to plan some gardening tasks! Here are some fun ways to get kids enjoying the outdoors, and learning about what nature has to offer.

GROW A HERB GARDEN.

Growing herbs is a really easy way to teach children how plants grow. Not only is it easy, it is great having fresh herbs available at your doorstep for adding to your cooking. The great thing about herbs is they can be planted in pots, window boxes, troughs and hanging baskets. Pop down to your local garden centre to get some seeds, and use South-Hort Patio plus for planting in.

“Gardening is a popular pastime enjoyed by thousands of New Zealanders. Apart from the obvious cost savings associated with growing your own, the positive psychological benefits can best be described as ‘food for the soul’,” Dr Liddle said. Seven tips for safer gardening • Gently water your garden and potted plants to minimise airborne droplets and dust • Read the warning label on bagged composts and potting mixes before use • Wear gloves and a dust mask when handling soil including bagged products • Open bagged products slowly using scissors and lean the bag away from your face

GROW SUNFLOWERS

Sunflowers are fun, easy way to add colour to the home, and watching them grow and grow is quite exciting! They are fast growing, so the kids will see results quickly. You can promote seed germination by putting the seeds in between a damp paper towel for a few days until the seed starts to sprout. Once they have sprouted, plant your seeds at least 30cm deep and give them a good watering. You should see shoots popping up within a week or so. Growing tip – wait until the possibility of frost has passed, and ensure they are in a warm sunny spot, with plenty of room to grow.

• Gently dampen potting mixes before use • Make sure your working area eg shed or greenhouse, is well ventilated • Wash your hands when finished • Not all those who come into contact with the bacteria become sick and symptoms will vary from person to person. If people become infected with Legionella, they may get flu-like symptoms that can range from mild to severe. PLANT OUT HANGING BASKETS

These look great bursting with spring colour, or full of fresh herbs ready to pick to use in cooking. Most garden centres have the baskets already made, others will have them as a kit to make. Either way they are super easy! Once you have your baskets, fill with South-Hort Patio Plus – this is great for herbs and for your flowers – and plan out what you are going to plant. Local garden centres are bursting with beautiful flowers that are ready to be planted. These are just a few simple ideas to get kids excited about the outdoors and gardening. Have a look at our website www.igro.co.nz for more ideas and for a full range of our products available.
