Darfield Playcentre marked 65 years of community interaction last weekend with past, and present families attending the celebrations. “Our playcentre first started in 1954 in the Calvin Hall at the Presbyterian church. Calvin Hall was moved in September 1976 to make way for the new Trinity Church, so the playcentre relocated to the Anglican Hall in 1975. In 1981, we moved into our current building at 8 Ross Street,” says playcentre member Kathleen Janmaat. “The first supervisor was Dorne Sambrook and later Mrs Margaret Broughton, a trained kindergarten teacher. Noreen Pearson took over until 1973 and was our patroness for many years. We were lucky to have her in that position supporting our centre. In 2005, we secured funding for a purpose-built building that was delivered on-site, and our little village settled into place. “The playcentre was gifted the name Puawananga, meaning Stars of the Forest in 2017 by Te Taumutu Runanga, a lovely distinction that we now wear with pride carrying our bicultural heritage into our everyday practices.“ Approximately 13 past members, including founding member Dawn Broughton, 25 current members and families enjoyed last weekend’s celebrations. “There were bouncy castles and face painting, a cutting of the cake by Dawn and photos for people to look at. Past members enjoyed mingling with present members, and everyone appreciated seeing where the playcentre came from as we brought a touch of the past into the present. We have approximately 40 families attending on a regular basis

with five sessions a week Monday to Friday from 9am–noon. Playcentre is a massive support for all everyone, and provides the opportunity to chat with like-minded parents in an environment where play is valued. Children can get messy and have a ball — it is a real village atmosphere. “We invite all families to come and join us. Most of our curriculum is based on learn by play where children

are supported in their play. It is a very healthy environment for building relationships while mum, dad, caregivers or grandparents are right there at hand. It is very much an extended supportive family situation. ”65 years on our purpose and ambition is to grow little people into caring, loving adults through the magical powers of play, and we do that in every single session, every day.” ¢

New chair for Field Days Planning is underway for the 2021 South Island Agricultural Field days at Kirwee in Central Canterbury, with the appointment of Michaela McLeod as the new organising committee chair. After nine years with the organising committee in various roles, McLeod now heads the team of about 25 volunteers. Attracting about 30,000 people every two years the event provides a three-day showcase for ever ything agricultural, including the latest in technological innovations with land and crops made available to provide working demonstrations of farm machinery. Ms McLeod says that for March 24 to 26, 2021, the organising committee has a successful formula to build on at the permanent site at Kirwee. Take a kid fishing Dave Denton started the Take a Kid Fishing day some thirty years ago as part of an initiative to get children off the couch. “This free event is this Sunday, October 20 at the Groynes Lakes, 2 Groynes Drive off Johns Road. We encourage under-eight-year-olds start at 9am and under 18-year-olds fish from 1pm onwards,” says Dave. “The Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust has again generously donated hundreds of young salmon to be released into the lakes, along with a number of large trout. “No registration or fishing licence is necessary for the day and adults may assist but are not permitted to fish. There are volunteer anglers to help anyone that needs it. “Take a Kid Fishing started in the USA in 1987. A presidential proclamation to hold a National Fishing Week was issued by Ronald Regan. The programme followed soon after in the UK, and in 1988 The NZ Future Fishing Foundation was formed with Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother as patron. “Our key objective is to give children a sense of confidence and self-worth by involving them with their families in a healthy outdoor pursuit. They are taught practical skills and develop personal qualities such as confidence, self-esteem, communication, discipline and cooperation with others. “The morning is set aside for children 12 years and under. skilled volunteer anglers will give advice and help. A chef will show people how to clean, prepare and cook it. If you don’t have gear, we have loan equipment and bait. If you have a rod and a few worms in the garden, please bring some in case we are short as this will save time and resources. There will be caravans onsite with food and drinks for sale. “Children love it, and we get an enormous amount to happiness seeing the sheer bubbling joy when a child catches a fish as many haven’t done it before, it is a very special thing. “Take a Kid Fishing has no barriers — all children are welcome.” ¢

Broughton retains mayoralty

Tons of family fun

u by Mike Isle

u by Ann van Engelen

Mayor Sam Broughton returns for a second term thanks to an election night majority twice that of his 2016 winning margin.

Thursday last week saw the coming together of communities as Selwyn Parenting Network Family Fun Day proudly delivered on its promise of connectedness and fun for all.

Preliminary results released on Sunday show Broughton receiving 11,920 votes, 7,483 votes ahead of his rival Bill Woods and more than twice that of his 2016 election count of 4,892. Broughton told The Record that he is “stoked”, and it is great to have the support of the community. “I feel very privileged to serve the Selwyn community as mayor, and it is great to have the consistency and continuity to carry on the work we are doing,” he said. Broughton said his focus in his second term would start with meeting all his councillors one on one and understanding what their shared priorities are. “Then the focus will be on delivering the specific projects we have already begun and budgeted for and there will be some new stuff coming up too, centred around tourism and the growth of Selwyn.” He said it was important that the district council keeps costs in line with what it has signalled to ratepayers. When he was elected in 2016, Broughton was, at 35, one of New Zealand’s youngest mayors. During his first term, he oversaw an $80 millionplus annual budget. His provisional winning margin in 2019 is the largest in Selwyn’s history. Based on the preliminary results, current councillors Jenny Gallagher, Nicole Reid, Murray Lemon, Mark Alexander, Jeff Bland, Grant Miller, Malcolm Lyall, Bob Mugford and Debra

Hasson are all provisionally returned. Newcomer Shane Epiha represents the Ellesmere ward, while the fourth seat in the Selwyn Central ward is still up for grabs with only 104 votes separating election night winner Michelle Jones from Sophie McInnes and Calvin Payne. Final results are expected on Thursday. Overall, there were 16,868 votes cast, which represents 41.86% of eligible voters, down on the 2016 figure of 44.55%. The ward scoring the highest turnout was Malvern with 51.80%, followed by Springs (42.50%), and Ellesmere (42.37%). The lowest turnout was recorded in Selwyn Central with 37.63%. ¢

“Record numbers of families, parents, caregivers and children poured into the Lincoln Event Centre,” says coordinator for Selwyn Parenting Network, Kate Webb. “There was pony rides, juggling workshops and the popular crazy bikes from Pedalmania. The young up and coming band called Out of Control took the stage with many young dancers joining in. “Children tested their running speed against the accurate measurement of a police speed laser, and Lincoln Firefighters brought their inflatable evacuation maze, which saw children learning to get down, get low and get out. “This year’s event has proved to be a highlight on the 2019 agenda. A highlight was attracting almost 30 local volunteers of all ages to assist us, proving that ‘giving back’ is still at the heart of many in our community. Pride of place u by Ann van Engelen

A piece of art created by pupils at Creative Sparks in Darfield has found a new home, hanging in Selwyn MP Amy Adams’ office where it is admired by staff and visitors alike. “I was on the lookout for a new piece of artwork to brighten up the walls in my electorate office and my staff members and I saw the picture of The Dot Tree in The Record, and we were very excited,” says Amy. “A number of things about the painting appealed to me, including the bright colours. I especially liked the fact that it was a collaborative work created by art students from Creative Sparks of all different ages — from age four up to 70, I understand. For me, the artwork encapsulates the individuality of each of the contributing artists and the tree also shows how we are all connected as a community, living and growing together. E-Scooters coming to Selwyn u by Mike Isle

E-scooters will be coming to Selwyn for a six-month trial, subject to the adoption of changes to traffic and parking rules. Selwyn District Council voted at its meeting last week to agree to a trial for two scooter companies, Lime and Lava, to trial their scooters in Rolleston, Prebbleton and Lincoln. It will be the first time an e-scooter trial has been carried out outside one of New Zealand’s major urban areas. The trial is subject to the adoption of the council’s draft traffic and parking bylaw, which includes changes allowing the scooters to be used and parked legally on public footpaths. The draft bylaw is out for public consultation until October 18. The earliest the bylaw can be adopted by the council would be at its December meeting. The trial will involve 50 Lava scooters and 200 Lime Scooters, which will be allowed to travel between the towns using cycleways. Lime Asia’s head of public affairs Mitchell Price said Lime has a vision for micro-mobility as part of a transport solution for the wider Christchurch region and neighbouring districts. The council had safety concerns around the use of State Highways and directed that the state highways be made no-go zones for the scooters

and that staff decline Burnham as a destination. Cemeteries will also be off-limits. The Rolleston iZone business hub will be included in the trial area with a crossing allowed across State Highway 1 using the pedestrian crossing from Rolleston Drive. ¢

“The coveted Orion Premier Award went to Darfield resident Soon-Lee Spicer for her linocut Chrysanthemum and Quinces,” said chairperson for Malvern Community Art Council Philip Baldwin. Judge Fiona Simpson praised SoonLee’s work as an ‘exquisitely rendered still-life’ reminiscent of traditional Japanese woodcuts. “David Atkinson’s Jar won the MCAC Friends Award combining its ‘subtle’ colouring, significant form and striking salt glaze to create a very elegant sculptural work. “Auckland artist, Gavin Chai received the Darfield Dental Award for his ‘small yet sophisticated’ work that draws the viewer in with subtle colours and a strong composition while last year’s Premier Award winner, Henry Turner,

received the Local Businesses Award for his watercolour, Yellow Arches. “The Survus Consultants Award went to Steve James for his Spring Snow, an oil painting in the tradition of Canterbury landscape painters such as Archibald Nicoll and AA Deans.” Other award winners include Darfield resident Jan Mitchell, West Melton artist Helen Stevenson, Christchurch artist Philip Beadle and Tai Tapu printmaker/ photographer John Maillard. “Our thanks for the success of Darfield Artweek go to many local volunteers and supporters, our Premier Award sponsor, Orion, and a large group of business sponsors, including Survus Consultants and Darfield Dental. Friends at Camp Twitch u by Ann van Engelen photos Steve Bone Photography

The families who attended Camp Twitch caught up with old friends and made new connections during the week-long event at Living Springs. “There were about 87 people at camp, all from families living with someone with Tourette’s Syndrome and the children had a great time,” says attendee Catherine McHaffie. Families travelled from across the country thanks to Catherine’s Zumba Fundraiser, which raised $2,686 and other major sponsors and fundraisers. “My son Michael had a blast. It was our first camp, but everyone was so welcoming, and he made friends extremely quickly. Camp is the biggest event on the Tourette’s Association calendar, and then we organise meetups like bowling days for families to stay in touch and become family. “Fundraising is important. Otherwise, it is unachievable to attend due to the expenses that come with Tourette’s as there is not a lot of funding available. Steve Bone was an amazing photographer who donated his time to give us memorable photos. One highlight was a visiting police officer who has

the syndrome. He was an inspiration explaining you can achieve successful careers with coping mechanisms you can learn. They get a feeling preceding a tic, like someone getting a migraine. There are ways to let it out less noticeably. His motto is: let your tic out as it is part of who you are and be proud. “People shared stories of hard times, and we learnt from each other. Someone sponsored ukuleles for the children to take home as concentrating on music or sport really helps. They almost don’t have tics when they are doing these activities. “Our ultimate goal is to have camps all year round to give respite. Michael came away feeling 100 per cent normal as he has never met anyone else with the syndrome. They talked, laughed and made fun of each other, it was so normal for them, and everyone understood. I thought Michael would benefit the most from camp, but I did too, it was very humbling.” ¢

We have Tumbledown Bay just 30 minutes from our location, and the Little River Rail Trail is just down the road. Local tennis courts, cafes and petrol stations mean you’re never too far from civilisation. “On weekends, weather permitting we try and have a campfire, so bring marshmallows to toast. Wayne and Sharon George have moved from working in stable careers to travelling in their bus taking on various roles such as fruit picking, relief milking and creating possibilities for others to enjoy a lifestyle while travelling.

W

ayne was working in forestry and truck driving and Sharon, a former bank manager, was employed at a geotech surveying company when she had an accident which encouraged them to re-evaluate their lifestyle.

“I love how life gives people the ability to think about what they are doing. I lost my first husband at 23 years old, and life wasn’t easy. Just when we got to a point where things were going great I tripped over a shoe at work and smashed my head into a wall,” says Sharon. “When I tripped I had my handbag in one hand and laptop in the other and didn’t want to drop either so broke my fall with my head. The doctors thought I had broken my neck but I hadn’t. It was the worst phone call I had to make to Wayne who was in the forest with hardly any cellphone reception.” Sharon ended up in a neck brace but didn’t realise she had a concussion.

“I flew to Wellington in an unpressurised plane two days later for work. This ended with me being very unwell, and we went from hoping to travel one day to making it happen.” Wayne said it left him with a hollow feeling and he was helpless being so far away. “Who knows if you have six days, six months or six years left to live. We decided to do what makes us happy as we had been constantly putting off our plans to travel the country in our bus.” Wayne and Sharon have been keeping a record of places where they had previously found work while on adventures. “We have been up to Russell and worked in a holiday park. We have

packed kiwifruit in Katikati, milked cows and painted houses to name a few things mixing with completely different types of people. “We went to Fiji with toys and books for schools and kindergartens in outback villages. There was no power — we slept on planks and washed with minimal water in a bucket due to the water shortage. We learnt what was really important as we helped and socialised with the locals who don’t have a lot but are happy.” Wayne and Sharon put photos and videos on a website to show others what they were doing in life and out of this came Seasonal Staff. “Our blog created interest from employers and job seekers as we don’t

Milking cows, painting and picking fruit are some of the opportunities the George’s have embarked upon

There are opportunities for cleaners, restaurant staff, strawberry and cherry pickers, ski season and tractor operators. “Every employer has to give their permanent staff four weeks annual leave, and we can now help reduce pressure as we have engineers, builders, teachers, nurses, accountants, IT people, and unskilled people who just want to get the odd job as they travel. Our Seasonal Staff website allows people to look at the profiles available. “We never had the intention of building a seasonal work business, but there was a huge need as employers

Creating Seasonal Staff was not part of the original plan for Wayne and Sharon as they moved to a gyspy type lifestyle

couldn’t find staff and travellers we met couldn’t find jobs. We would send emails to the businesses in areas we were travelling to and pre-booked a year’s work. We thought everyone did this, but they don’t. “The older generation has skills and wants to travel, and we help facilitate their opportunities. We have given people wings to follow their dream by pointing them in the right direction and giving them the ability to connect and do so much more. “We have some 700 workers registered and had more than one million website hits since June 7. has taken off like a rocket — we are having 50 people join per day. Farmers who need a break can register and see who is available. They come up on a map around New Zealand, and most are mobile and will travel to you. We have fencing contractors, and painters — there are so many CVs with different skills. “We have travelled the country from the Far North to Hawke’s Bay, Wellington, Taranaki, Taupo, Whakatane, Canterbury and Southland looking at farming, market gardeners and the ski lodges. “We have picked avocados, milked and done odd jobs on farms. We have

people who can relief milk for people, harvest kumaras, a photographer and administrator. “The variety is amazing with beekeepers and vet clinic helpers for debudding. We even met up with a structural engineer. It is not the same as being a contractor so people can step right into jobs, and this is fantastic with the staffing shortage we have at present across the country. “The NZ Motorhome Association love the idea, and the most amazing part is we inspire others. We are loving the shift to the gypsy lifestyle and helping people in the various rural community roles.”

“Homebush Stables is a lovely old complex owned by the Deans family who were the first pioneers of Canterbury,” says event organiser Chris Fechney. “You can wander the gardens and bring a picnic or purchase food from the restaurant, which will be open as a cafe for the day. The complex houses four museums including Military, Sports,

Everyday items and Machinery. There is something for everyone to view and men really enjoy it. “The stables are where the Clydesdales used to live and are made from bricks produced on the property, and there is a water-driven turbine. It is a great day for newcomers to the city, as well as people who grew up here, to learn the history of the area. “Come along and see the 1905 All Blacks Tour to Wales display with Bob Deans’ jerseys. We have old trikes and Mona Anderson’s typewriters, books

and her wedding dress. Moana lived at Mount Algidus Station and is famous for writing the book A River Rules My Life, as well as many others. “There will be a history talk on William Deans, who was one of the first pioneers, and Louise Deans will have her amazing book available for purchase for $35, which includes a lot of history. Come and join us at 2142 Homebush Road, Homebush, just before Coalgate, and 11 kilometres from Darfield. Entry is $5 with children under 14 years old free.” ¢

St Ambrose Anglican Church in Sheffield recently held its annual service of blessing of the animals. “People were invited to bring their farm or house pets to the service to be blessed and those without either were invited to bring along their favourite stuffed animal toys. “In the service we gave thanks to God for the gifts of creation and we are mindful of the fact that this wonderful gift is ours to take care of. Our prayers included both a gratitude for the companionship of our pets, and a confession that we have not taken care of our planet as well as we could. Our young people around the world have recently called people to action regarding climate change. “In our scriptures we have creation stories and these form the foundation of how we view the world, namely that we have a sacred trust to be faithful stewards of Earth’s resources. The way Christians view God’s creation is that it is something given as a gift by God and that God takes delight in it and in us. Our response then is to care for it just as we would take care of any gift given to us with love. “This year in attendance were 29 people, five dogs, two cats, two goats, and one lamb that was 11 days old, plus three favourite and much-loved
