Three into Young Farmer regional final Rakaia dairy farmer Jonny Brown’s bid to be FMG Young Farmer of the Year is back on track after suffering a setback last year when he failed to qualify for a hotly-contested regional final.

The 27-year-old assistant farm manager, this month took out first place in the Christchurch district contest, which secures him a spot in the Tasman Regional Final next March. Jonny said a narrow loss in qualifying for last year’s final was motivation to step up his efforts this year. “I missed out by one point. I was gutted — but, it is a different story this year, and it’s a relief to know I am advancing to the next stage,” he said. Jonny and his fellow competitors were required to compete in a range of theoretical and physical disciples, including assembling a shearing handpiece, identifying different types of plants, reversing a quad bike and trailer,

and milking sheep. Jonny will be joined in the Tasman final by two other local young farmers, Alex Knowles, 25, and Martin Bates, 29. “I am quite surprised that I did as well as I did,” said Alex, who is an agri-manager with Ravenstown. “I only entered because I thought it would be hypocritical of me to tell other people to sign up if I didn’t have a go myself.” Martin Bates is a qualified builder and contract milks 1,200 cows across two Charing Cross farms. He is excited about competing in his second regional final. “The last one was a great experience because it highlighted my shortfalls and what I need to work on,” he said. ¢

Search for a soldier’s family

Selwyn District continues to be a popular place to live work and play and could get even better if the Council’s 2017–2018 Annual Report is anything to go by. The report underlines the district’s continuing growth, economic confidence and community development. It notes that Selwyn’s population is now estimated to be more than 60,000 — making it the South Island’s thirdlargest territorial authority and that the district’s economy is growing at double the national average. Mayor Sam Broughton said the council was continuing to play a central role in providing the essential services, infrastructure and facilities to support a growing community. In its report, the council said it performed well during the year. It achieved 88 per cent of its performance targets which, it noted, was a 2 per cent increase on the previous year. Overall, the council’s financial position remains sound. Expenditure for the year was $100.6 million, close to the budget of $99 million — the variation being attributed to increased maintenance and operational expenditure, the acceleration of the district plan review, and the higher cost of sales arising from land sales Izone. Revenue for the year was $146 million compared with a budgeted $128.6 million. Building activity remains strong, and the council points to its strong commitment to infrastructure development and community facilities. All of which has not gone unnoticed by the general population: 69 per cent of residents rated the council’s overall performance as “good to very good.” A point acknowledged by Mayor Broughton.

p The ‘Dead Man’s Penny’ bearing Crossen’s name

p Mayor Sam Broughton

“We are pleased to be contributing to Selwyn’s success as a place that welcomes families from around New Zealand and the world, [making] it easy for businesses to establish and thrive, and supporting our primary sector,” he said. “Our results for the year outline the investment we are making to support our communities and make sure we are well placed to accommodate the growth that we expect to continue for some time.” ¢

Robert is listed on the Buttes New British Cemetery (NZ) Memorial, Polygon Wood, at Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, which commemorates 378 officers and men of the New Zealand Division who died in the Polygon Wood sector between September 1917 and May 1918, who have no known grave. A death notice for Private Crossen in 1918 states: CROSSEN — In loving memory of Private Robert Joseph Crossen, 25th Reinforcements, sixth son of Ellen and the late Thomas Crossen of Rolleston, killed in action in France, December 3rd, 1917; aged 27 years. RIP.

Inserted by his loving mother, sisters and brothers. “As Robert was the sixth son, hopefully, his other brothers or sisters had families, and a link can be found there,” Ms Graham-van Rooden says. “The Oxford RSA will be holding a service at the Oxford Cenotaph on November 11, and if we could locate any family, we could return the plaque to this serviceman’s long-lost family. I can be contacted at mobile 027 476 7657 or email grahden@farmside.co.nz.” 

New Agritech device could save millions u by Mike Isle

A new device developed by Lincoln Agritech Ltd could save the dairy industry millions of dollars a year and help prevent pollutants from entering waterways. The device, known as MilkGuard, measures the percentage of dairy products in dairy plant waste streams and processing lines, which are automatically sent to the plant’s process control room, where operators can monitor them and make changes if necessary. ADVERTORIAL

Going nuts for the flavour You might have bought a scoop or two of walnuts from the bulk bin in your supermarket — but have you ever tasted properlydried fresh, locally-grown walnuts, cracked them yourself and eaten them straight out of their shell?

Those who know — and those who grow the tasty treats — are certain that you’ll never go back to buying the processed variety again. That’s due to the nature of the nut itself, and the way it is developed and dried. Despite being encased in a hardy shell, walnuts are perishable and their healthful fats easily damaged. If you’re purchasing shelled walnuts in bulk, avoid those that appear shrivelled, are not dried properly, smell rancid or that you cannot verify are fresh. The good news is that properly handled, New Zealand-grown walnuts are not degraded through ageing, so the vitamins, minerals and oil content are not compromised. They are fresh, locally grown and not bleached like some imported walnuts. That means not just a

better flavour in baking, in salads or enjoyed as a snack, but also a range of health benefits. These include support for the heart, for weight control, lowering the risk of certain cancers, improving diabetic symptoms and even a surprise from history. Ancient healers noted that the walnut looked like a human brain, with the outer casing as the ‘head’. Since they believed that ‘like cures like’, these medieval doctors prescribed walnuts as a brain food, aiding memory, wit and wisdom. It turns out they were right — the walnut really does improve brain function! Moreover, with a powerful dose of antioxidants as well, this tasty little nut is definitely a best friend to summer salads, trail mixes, cakes and snacks!

Poppies in remembrance A salute to those who served in the armed forces in Selwyn’s past has been added to the streets in Leeston with a poppy added to the signs for Gallipoli Street and Messines Street, which border the township’s landmark cenotaph.

Both streets trace their origins to the Leeston war memorial, erected in 1924 to commemorate soldiers from Ellesmere County who lost their lives during the first world war and the additions are added under the Poppy Places Trust. Many Territorial soldiers from the Ellesmere area volunteered to serve in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force when it was established at the outbreak of the first world war in August 1914. It was these initial volunteers and those who followed in the reinforcement contingents in 1915, who fought during the Gallipoli campaign. Council asset engineer, Mark Chamberlain, says the historic value

of the poppy, street name and location made the addition an easy decision — Gallipoli Street. “As a growing district, it is important to remember the people who have come before us and the sacrifices they made. There are a number of families still in the Ellesmere area who would have had family members fight in the first world war, and this gesture is about helping to maintain the knowledge of what our forefathers went through.” Information on the Poppy Places Trust can be found on their website — poppyplaces.nz — with information on Gallipoli Street, Messines Street and the other sites around New Zealand. ¢

Coat years in the making u by Mike Isle

It has been, its maker estimates, 20 years in the making before it appears in next month’s Centrestage Rolleston’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. What is truly amazing is that Barry Tomkinson is not talking of the show, but of the coat, which decades ago he started to fashion out of two old handknitted jumpers that he Swiss-darned, added fabric wedges and finally lined with a black iron-on interface. Mr Tomkinson said he could estimate the years it took but has lost track of the hours. “There would have been a lot of downtime during that period. As far as hours go, I wouldn’t like to guess, but there would have been many.” Mr Tomkinson said he used as inspiration for the coat programme photos from the West End production of the show in the early 90s. He also saw that production and was immediately taken by the coat, which he thought was, and later used as, a great costume for a fancy-dress party. “The coat is based on the ‘coat of many colours’ story of Joseph from the Bible’s Book of Genesis. The colours allow the wearer to stand out. I think it was used as a symbol of grandeur and glory. Where possible, I have tried to match the colours from the 1990s’ production — although some had to be just what I had available.” In the Centrestage production, the coat is

Heritage in Hororata

Referees required

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Mike Isle

Hororata has a special place in the history of New Zealand, and one to be celebrated as we commemorate 125 years of women being involved in our democracy. It was Sir John Hall, the premiere of the nation in the 1880s, who drafted the bill which was to give women the vote, making us world leaders — a proud local resident who helped advance this worthy cause.

Selwyn United Football Club is looking for referees.

This year, the Hororata Parish Spring Fair will celebrate the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand. This annual traditional country fair is a ‘must do’ for many people in the Selwyn district. “The fair is a fun day out with the emphasis on family entertainment,” said organising committee chair, Lucy Cookson. “This year we are excited to be part of Beca Heritage Week and the Suffrage 125 celebrations. We have a number of activities and displays planned to celebrate Suffrage 125 at this year’s fair. Our creative kids’ competition theme is Back in Time where primary age children can enter an oldfashioned toy they have made or bake and display an old-time recipe.” However, that’s not all. As this is a proper spring fair, you can also expect a wealth of attractions ranging from the culinary — homemade preserves p and jams, delicious sweet treats and more — through to the crafty and artistic. There will be a big countrystyle auction, plenty of entertainment, and even a competition to craft some modern art from that old Kiwi favourite, number eight wire. This year also sees the introduction of an archery range to challenge up and coming ‘Robin Hoods’,

FULLY QUALIFIED Building toward a better future u by Andy Bryenton

The foundations of the lifestyle we enjoy rest on the abilities of those who make it all possible. Without qualified tradespeople to provide us with stable and comfortable homes outfitted with the best in modern conveniences, we’d still literally be in the dark ages. 100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

While academic excellence and university education are undoubtedly important, so too is the time-honoured apprenticeship method of learning a trade. In fact, when Oxford University, the first great seat of learning in Britain was built in 1096, those who constructed its first halls were stonemasons, carpenters and smiths trained under the apprenticeship programmes of the great medieval guilds. Today, apprenticeships are far more modern, but each one comprises both a theory component and a whole lot of learning ‘hands-on’, out in the field with established professionals. It means two things — not just a guarantee that there will be electricians, plumbers, builders, mechanics, engineers and more available to tackle the problems of the future, but also that those who currently answer the call when we need the help of a pro have learned their craft just as comprehensively as those in other professions. FULLY QUALIFIED

The right tools for the task u by Andy Bryenton

Some jobs are just too big for the kind of equipment that’s made for around the house. When it comes to the demands of springtime in the countryside, tools which have been designed for the pocket-handkerchief lawns and diminutive DIY tasks of a city section might not make the grade. Take water blasters, for a simple example. A small, electric powered unit is fine when the nearest plug socket is mere metres away, and the biggest task asked of the machine is to wash the road grit off a commuter hatchback. Scale that up to sluicing the mud off a 200 horsepower tractor prior to some in-the-field maintenance with the clock ticking, and you’ll need every component improved — a petrol engine, double the PSI of water pressure on tap, more litres a minute throughput and sturdier fittings and hoses to manage the strain. Similarly, a lawn mower for a lifestyle block is inevitably going to be bigger than the push mower used on the old Kiwi quarter-acre. With this upscale, it’s not just a consideration of mowing width, power, extra cup holders and style, however. It’s all about the terrain you’ll tackle, ease of operation and safety in the field. The very same considerations scale up when you must switch out a tiny garden shredder for a serious wood

chipper with its added horsepower and the ability to chomp through tree limbs. Or even when trading in the old vacuum cleaner, you use in the shed for a proper wet and dry unit, which can be of great use during renovations. Even the many graduated sizes of chainsaw and brush cutter are designed on a spectrum with urban firewood management on one end and lumberfelling power on the other. The biggest question, of course, is how to choose. Go too small, and you’ll waste time, put wear and tear on components, and inevitably waste money. Go too large or get the wrong fit and it’s a waste right away, with the added problem that the very biggest tool for the job may be unwieldy to use for long periods of time. As every situation is different — from steeply sloping farm paddocks to lifestyle blocks to beachfront lawns — the only answer is to take advantage of the experience of your local outdoor

Shearing shows underway The shearing competition at the Ellesmere A and P Show last weekend attracted an international line-up for the third event in the South Island in a nationwide programme of about 60 shearing sports shows throughout the country in the 2018–2019 season. Shearing competition organiser at the show at Leeston, Jason Palmer, said some of the country’s top-ranked shearers from last season and a visitor from England claimed the major prizes. New Zealand trans-Tasman series representative Troy Pyper, of Invercargill, won the open final, claiming best time and board quality points for a comfortable victory by a 3.35pts margin over runner-up Ant Frew, of Pleasant Point. Pyper had shorn the 12 sheep in 12min 22sec and beat Frew to the finish by half-a-minute. Gore shearer Lionel Taumata, the number three-ranked Senior shearer in New Zealand last summer, scored his eighth win in the grade and second in a week, while Brayden Clifford, also of

A sheep experiencing severe fly strike is very unpleasant, and often they are euthanised for welfare reasons. Prevention is definitely better than treatment in this situation. Understanding and reducing the risk factors is key to preventing fly strike. Flies lay their eggs in soiled, moist fleece, most commonly around the back end where faeces and urine stain the wool. Tail docking at the correct length, dagging and crutching to reduce the amount of fleece in the area greatly reduces the risk. It is

important to note, that fleece that is too long also predisposes fly strike all over the body. Jetting or dipping sheep with a fly strike solution during the risk period is an effective way of preventing fly strike. Dipping is the most effective, although jetting achieves very effective prevention (90% of strike on back or breech). Ensure that mixture is diluted correctly, equipment is working well, and the correct volume is being given. These will generally provide at least two months of fly strike protection.

It is still important to check your sheep (back, breech and pizzle) for soiled wool and signs of fly strike at least every second day. Ensure you leave enough time (at least 60 days, preferably 90 days) between last treatment and shearing. Do not hesitate to give VetEnt Darfield a call if you have any questions about fly strike or want to improve your fly strike prevention.

Westland Milk payout at lower end Westland Milk Products has reported a final milk payout of $6.12 a kilo of milk solids, less a five cent retention, delivering a net average result for shareholders of $6.07 a kgMS.

The company is New Zealand’s second largest dairy co-operative with a production plant in Rolleston’s Izone industrial park. Chairman Pete Morrison said a substantial number of shareholders received an additional premium on the net result of 4.4 cents a kgMS for providing UHT winter milk and colostrum, giving them a net average payout of $6.11. He said the co-operative achieved $3.3 million profit before tax because of the decision to retain five cents. “It was essential to retain a degree of payout to ensure a strong balance sheet and leave us options for capital expenditure to drive growth.” He said the Westland board acknowledged its milk payout wasn’t competitive and was focussed on achieving parity in future. “This year’s payout was at the lower end of our range and was affected by global commodity prices, the impact of Cyclone Fehi, and a strike at the Port of Lyttelton.

“We also didn’t meet our production and processing targets for the year. Top line sales were not as good as they could have been but we are seeing improvements with the new sales team in place and the benefit of improved processes.” Mr Morrison said the co-operative was currently reviewing its capital structure to respond to high debt and limited financial flexibility issues. “Our priority is to accelerate our strategic business plan and to drive better, long-term returns and value to our shareholder farmers.” Chief executive, Toni Brendish, said the co-operative had made important performance improvements in 2017– 18 in Right First Time manufacturing, along with process and efficiency

improvements. “Changes to our internal systems and processes will continue to help improve our performance and drive better outcomes in the coming year,” she said. “Last year, our workplace safety performance was particularly pleasing, with a 23% drop in total recorded Injury Frequency Rate. This speaks to a good safety culture and helps reduce costs and increase efficiencies. “This focus, along with the commencement of work to deliver on the segregated milk component of our five-year strategy, combined with the process improvements in all levels of the organisation, gives us more confidence to achieve a goal of competitive payout in our predicted payout for 2018–19.” ¢

Blue-green algae

All Horse Covers & Repairs

by Anita Breyholtz DVM, Selwyn Veterinary Centre

Blue-green algae (also named cyanobacteria) are microscopic bacteria found in many lakes and rivers in New Zealand. Algal concentrations vary throughout the year but are most abundant during the warmer summer months. Not all blue-green algae are poisonous. However, some blue-green algae produce toxins that affect people, pets and livestock that swim in or drink from algae-contaminated water. These algae can produce two types of toxins: microcystins, which can result in liver damage or failure, and anatoxins, which attack the nervous system. The toxins are extremely potent, and even minute ingestions can result in severe, sometimes fatal, poisoning. Symptoms develop quickly, often within 30 minutes. Signs to watch for: • Vomiting • Diarrhoea • Lethargy • Pale gums • Disorientation • Panting/difficulty breathing • Salivation (drooling) • Muscle tremors • Muscle rigidity • Seizures • Paralysis • Collapse Other symptoms to watch for • Blood in stools or black, tarry stools • Yellow tint of the gums and skin • Blue tint of the gums and skin If you are concerned, contact your vet

immediately. Unfortunately, there is no antidote for the toxins. Immediate veterinary care is imperative.Since poisoning can have such severe consequences and there is no way of telling whether blue-green algae are poisonous or not by how they look, avoidance of water containing blue-green algae is important. Avoid contact with water that is cloudy, discoloured or musty smelling, water that has coloured scum forming, small globules suspended in it, or if there are thick dark brown or black mats with slimy or velvety texture on a riverbed. Blue-green algae in rivers and lakes look different. Log onto Environment Canterbury’s website ecan.govt.nz for information on how to identify blue-green algae mats and check for up-to-date health warnings for rivers and lakes. Health warnings are placed at affected spots. However, warnings will not be in place at all spots where animals can enter the water, and blue-green algae concentrations can change quickly. Not all blooms are visible, and toxins can persist after visible blooms disappear. It makes checking for current health warnings
