A foundation stone for the new facility, which is now being estimated to cost around $5 million, is to be unveiled at West Melton Domain on Sunday as part of town’s 150-year anniversary celebrations. Following consultation, with community groups and domain users the Selwyn District Council released details of initial plans for the facility including floor plans and artist impressions of the new facility. Council had signalled its intention for a multi-use sports and leisure centre to be built on the West Melton Domain in its 2012–22 Long Term Plan, with initial costs put at around $3.5 million. Council’s Open Space and Property asset manager Mark Rykers said following the consultation undertaken by the project steering group a number of changes had been made to the original plan. “Among those is the re-siting of the facility closer to West Melton Road to make it more accessible and to work in with both existing
buildings and car parking,” Mr Rykers said. “The size of the building has also been increased from 1,500 to 1,800 square metres to enable the building to house a full size sports court and to ensure all groups, including scouts which were not in the original plan, have a base in the building.” Mr Rykers said the rise in cost, which is only an estimate at this stage, was due to the increased floor plan and taking into account the need to relocate the current tennis courts which had now become part of the proposed site of the new building. He said the plans will now be refined and costs detailed before being submitted to the public for comment as part of council’s next round of Long Term Plan consultation early next year. Selwyn Central Community Board member Bruce Russell, who is on the centre’s project steering group, said they were delighted at the concept plans which have come forward.

The Hororata Parish Spring Fair, held annually on Labour Day, has become an essential fundraising event for the Hororata Parish as it has become harder to balance the books since the earthquakes.

That’s according to Hororata Spring Fair chairperson Lucy Cookson. “The parish used to gain good income from the use of the St Johns Stone Church before the September 2010 earthquakes and events like the fair provided extra funds,” she said. “However, now events like the Spring Fair are the main income for the Parish, covering the day to day running expenses, pastoral care, community activities and services.” She said the St Johns Stone Church has been made water tight so no further damaged is sustained but no further repairs have been started. The Church Property Trust (CPT) has advised it wants to see the stone church rebuilt and a project plan is being developed. “We had a public meeting with the CPT a few months ago and it was positive to hear that they want to rebuild the stone church, as that is what the parish and wider community would like. So we have a common purpose, now it is just a matter of working out how we get there.”

p Work gets underway at Rolleston Railway Station as a group of volunteers start transforming the site
Selwyn Central Community Board chair Diane Chesmar said a garden has been put alongside the railway platform and a panel showing the railway history and a mural are planned for the future. “The next steps are to complete stage one with further plants to go in the garden, picnic tables and rubbish bins, as well as some sort of barrier from the road,” Mrs Chesmar said. The original Rolleston Railway Station was built in 1866 on a location further south from the current site when the railway line was put in, which Mrs Chesmar said was the second provincial railway line in the South Island. Mrs Chesmar said the town of Rolleston formed at this time,

predominantly around the railway line and also as a farming town. In 1923 a new railway station was built on the present site. This was destroyed by fire in 1967 and a third station was built, which is still in existence today. Mrs Chesmar said the last Rolleston station master left in the 1980s and the station was boarded up and had since become an eyesore. She said a lot of people had very good ideas about what to do with the railway station in the future but a number of issues needed to be worked through such as access to the site, as well as water and toilets. It is hoped the enhancement project will be finished in time for the town’s 150-year celebrations in 2016. ¢

Emergency volunteers wanted Fair for diabetes awareness The Selwyn District Council is looking for volunteers who would be able to help their communities in an emergency.
The volunteers would help to run or staff welfare centres. Welfare centres can be opened in an emergency and provide assistance to anyone who can’t stay in their home. The centres can provide accommodation, food, suppor t and advice for people. Volunteers may also need to do other tasks including dropping off food parcels or collecting supplies. Council’s emergency welfare manager Diane Chesmar said they are looking for people who have empathy for others and want to support people in their community at a time of need. “Having a good knowledge of local communities would also be helpful, but is not essential.” Mrs Chesmar said welfare centres help to make sure people have their basic needs met
including food, shelter and assistance. “Volunteers who staff the centres play a vital role in the response to an emergency and it can be very rewarding to help people in your community at a time when they most need assistance.” After the Canterbury earthquakes a number of welfare centres operated in Christchurch and Selwyn to support families who couldn’t stay in their homes. Mrs Chesmar said training would be provided for volunteers and people interested in volunteering would need to be available to attend training sessions, emergency exercises and assist in actual emergencies. A weekend long country fair to raise funds and awareness of the impact of diabetes in New Zealand will be held near West Melton in November. The Edendale Country Fair is a first time event for the district and is the brainchild of local woman Deborah Solomon in collaboration with Diabetes Christchurch. “Diabetes is quietly becoming an epidemic for all ages in New Zealand,” Ms Solomon said. With two young children and a family history of diabetes in both her and her husband’s families Ms Solomon is conscious of the need to make healthy life changes. “It doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside, your sugar levels can still be going wrong on the inside,” she said. The history of horse racing in West Melton will be on display as part of the town’s 150-Year Celebrations this weekend.
A book discussing the lives of women in West Melton will be launched as part of the town’s celebrations at Labour Weekend this year.

West Melton harness racing family stalwart Jackie Butt and niece Chrissie Dalgety are organising the display featuring memorabilia from nearly a century and a half of racing history in the district. “The display highlights the importance of the racing industry in West Melton,” Mrs Dalgety said. “The New Zealand Trotting Cup will be on display. It just so happens that a West Melton horse, Terror to Love (trained by Graham and Paul Court), won the cup last year and two favourite
horses to win the cup this year are from West Melton.” Mrs Dalgety said horse racing gear, trophies and pictures would be on display from around 50 trainers and the equipment on display will show how the industry has progressed over the years. “Racing has always been prominent in the area and it continues to do so,” she said. The display will be open at the West Melton School Hall on October 25 from 1pm to 4pm. ¢

Keeping young drivers safe Selwyn teenagers have been given the chance to take to Ruapuna Raceway to improve their driving skills.

The Leading Learners programme is held most school holidays and according to Selwyn District Council’s road safety co-ordinator Ngaire Tinning over the past three years they have been extremely popular with more than 300 participants completing the course. She said the courses are assisting the district address the issue of young drivers being involved in accidents. “Over the past five years young drivers aged between 15 and 24 have been involved in more than 180 crashes in the Selwyn district resulting in injuries, including 11 fatalities and 61 serious injuries. “Nationally, restricted drivers are at greater risk of being in a serious crash in the first six to 12 months of driving solo than at any other time in their lives and this is partly due to driving inexperience.

“Driving on the open road can be challenging so it’s important we provide opportunities for young people to improve their driving skills and knowledge in a safe and enjoyable environment.” Leading Learners workshops are held most school holidays, giving secondary students practical tips on improving their driving skills and knowledge while working towards obtaining a restricted driver’s licence. The full-day course is for students with a learner’s licence and includes a variety of activities to learn about emergency braking, driving on different road surfaces, managing distractions, low speed manoeuvres and basic vehicle maintenance. The course is a combination of practical and theory based workshops but most involve being in a vehicle with the qualified instructors who teach the course. The course is funded by Selwyn District Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency. Parents are also encouraged to attend the course to learn how they can be good driving coaches. Holiday driving often means spending several hours behind the wheel. Fatigue can be dangerous but there are some simple ways to improve your alertness. • Plan your trip ahead of time. Allow extra time to get to your destination and plan to take regular meal and rests breaks to help you stay alert. Fencing on the lifestyle block by Pete Gregory
Most lifestyle properties will need fencing. If you’re keeping livestock, you’ll need fences to keep them in, to manage your grazing pasture, and to keep unwanted animals out. You can either elect to do this fencing yourself, or use a contractor. There is a great deal of satisfaction to be gained from doing your own fencing, but it isn’t as easy as it looks. The best advice I can give anyone if you’ve never fenced before is to start with some professional help. Get a contractor in, work with them, watch and learn. One way to save money but still feel a sense of accomplishment is to have a contractor drive all the fence posts with tractor and rammer and for you to finish all the wire work. That way you can say “I built that fence.” While it’s good to get it all sorted at once, you don’t need to deal with all the fencing in one go. Get any boundary fences sorted out first. Use temporary electric fencing to split paddocks up, to work out what works, then put in permanent fences over a period of time. Think carefully about what type or height of fence you put in. Conventional height fences are always a safe bet.
The livestock you’re running now might not be what you have on the property in future. So putting up two-foot high fences for the Carpathian Pygmy Cattle you’re breeding today might limit you next year when you cross graze them with Ecuadorian Jumping Sheep. Gate placement can make all the difference to your day. In can be difficult to get cattle to go through gates in the middle of a fence line. A gateway in the corner of a paddock is easier to shift stock through. Gateways need to be big enough for vehicles and farm machinery to fit through. Hay baling machinery will need more width than most to get through, especially conventional size balers. Fencing can be dangerous. Be careful with wire strainers and any wire under tension. When handling wire always wear safety eyewear and protective clothing including suitable gloves and steel capped boots. Cut ends of wire are sharp.
Always bend back the last 100mm or so of wire at the end of a roll, or stick it into the ground to keep it out of the way. Take extra care around any working

Panforte is a traditional Italian dessert from the Tuscan region with evidence of its candied fruit wonders being enjoyed as far back as the 13th century. Thought to be specifically from Sienna, you may find recipes referring DARFIELD FARM CENTRE to Panforte di Siena. Carluccio. It is for a traditional panforte. There are many other recipes available which put a twist on this classic, such as chocolate panforte and panforte with marzipan known as panforte fiorito. Note the ingredient Vin Santo is an Italian dessert wine and is available for purchase in New Zealand but you may need to order it ahead online. It is the same delicious dessert wine traditionally used to dip biscotti into, so not a bad idea to have a bottle or three in the house for such occasions. ¢

Panforte
Ingredients 240g figs or pitted dates 50g honey 100g soft brown sugar ½ tsp each of ground cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg and black pepper 250g candied fruit, such as cherries, citron, lemon and orange rind 50g blanched almonds 50g pine nuts 50g shelled hazelnuts, toasted 3–4 tbsp plain flour, sifted 50ml Vin Santo Icing sugar to dust Method Heat the oven to 150 Celsius. Line a shallow 25cm round cake tin, or a 20cm square tin, with baking paper.
Mince the figs or dates and put them in a pan with enough water just to cover. Add the honey, brown sugar and all the spices. Cook gently for about 10 minutes, then tip into a bowl. The mixture should be soft and sticky, but not wet. Add the candied fruit and nuts and mix well, then add the flour and Vin Santo and mix to a sticky mass. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake in the oven for 30 to 40 minutes. Take out of the oven and leave to cool in the tin. Sprinkle generously with icing sugar and serve cut into thin wedges. Ne voglio ancora, are there any seconds?

Recently I was in Taupo supporting my son at the national under 19 rugby tournament. It’s not hard to see where his motivation comes from — there are New Zealand rugby selectors on the side-lines. The hours of training and sacrifice are paying off. He gets to play the game he loves with mates alongside, and enjoy the accolades that come with representative honours. But how do we find motivation when the results aren’t so obvious? How do we make the choice to go out and exercise when the couch looks so enticing? The choices we make come from our values. Those things that are important to us. Getting clear about our values can be enormously productive. We often think we know what is important to us, but nine times out of 10 when I do this exercise with clients, the order in which we rank our values comes as a surprise, and this leads to
some genuine life-changing moments. Listing our values around a certain area of life such as relationships, work or well being, ranking them, and then comparing each one against its immediate next value can be very insightful. For instance, we often feel like we want to lose weight to look good but are frustrated when we don’t stick to our goals. By sorting our values we may find that family ranks much higher than looking good. When we make the connection between our weight (being healthy), and being around for our children and grandchildren (actively and engaged), it makes it easier to choose the sports shoes and salad. We can stall when we overwhelm ourselves with the big picture as well. If the boys thought about what they would need to
do to become an All Black — the task would be daunting and they may not attempt it. Just doing what they need to right now, taking their first small step allows
them to set a path which will give them other, unexpected rewards along the way. What smallest step could you make that would lead you on to what you really want? ¢

The Record talked to Amanda about moving to New Zealand, purchasing a vineyard with her husband Haydn on 10 acres near West Melton, and which led them to setting up their own wine label which they named Braided River. Amanda enjoys the comforts of home and relishes in producing items from the land that can be savoured on site. Hazelnuts, vegetables, olives, and of course grapes, find their way indoors to be lovingly cared for and transformed into delectable treats to be enjoyed at the table with family and friends. This is a far cry from her days working as a sales and marketing graduate in England, but Amanda says she has always been a country girl at heart, having grown up on an arable farm in the United Kingdom. In the early 1990s she met and married Haydn, a Kiwi horse vet who was

p Amanda Mitchell enjoys the lifestyle of working in the vineyard
working abroad. They lived for a time in Hong Kong where they had their two sons, then decided to make the move to New Zealand in 2002. “Everyone said New Zealand is the best place to bring up children,” Amanda said. After a few months of looking around the Mitchells decided to make West Melton home, and in particular, a pocket of land with a small vineyard. “Sometimes you go somewhere and it has a nice feel. This place ticked a lot of boxes,” she said. The vineyard had previously been supplying grapes for Waipara Hills Winery in North Canterbury, but Amanda said there was something deflating about caring for grapes and then seeing them go off in a truck to be mixed with other grapes. In the first year she decided to keep a few grapes back, taking them down the road to Sandihurst Winery (now known as True and Daring) to experience how wine making was done. In 2004 the first bottles of Braided River Riesling were formed. Amanda found the process so enjoyable that she did not look back. Soon all the grapes harvested from the property were used to produce wine under her own label, Braided River. They were predominantly Riesling, but with a few bottles of Pinot
Noir, Pinot Gris and Rose produced as well. “There are many reasons I chose the name Braided River. The area we live in was originally the flood plain of the Waimakariri River. You can still see where the rivers have gone through here. “We have a well on the property that taps into the Waimakariri. Also braided rivers are unique to the South Island of New Zealand and really define it. Braided rivers are dynamic and always changing and wines are like that too.” While Amanda grows the grapes, she leaves it to winemaker Matt King at Lone Goat Vineyard in Burnham to turn the grapes to wine, which she then labels, markets and promotes to customers. “There’s something very romantic about owning a vineyard. To produce your own wine is lovely. It’s a really good lifestyle option. It’s therapeutic living amongst the vines but it’s nowhere near as glamorous as people might expect. It’s jolly hard work.” Amanda says West Melton can be a difficult area to grow grapes. She installed frost preventative measures in the form of a watering spray system when she first arrived, but still some years she does not get the quantity of grapes she would like. “You need everything to stack up right. that comes out of West Melton is really good.” On a good year Braided River produces around 300 cases of wine. It is sold through local restaurants, markets and by direct order. Amanda always keeps a couple of cases back each year so she can see how the wine changes over time. Braided River is part of the Selwyn Wine and Food Trail, which is a collective of artisan food and beverage producers in the district. “Being an artisan is something very special. People have taken time to make their product. The Selwyn Wine and Food Trail provides a way
of promoting ourselves and the region.” Amanda enjoys collaborating with other local producers and sees working together as a way of enhancing each other’s businesses rather than providing competition. “Together we have a presence. Individually we would just get lost on the map. Wine is a very personal thing. Driver distraction survey Selwyn District Council is calling on motorists to take part in a driver distraction survey. Council’s road safety co-ordinator Ngaire Tinning said any activity which takes a driver’s eyes off the road or hands from the wheel is considered to be a distraction. “Other passengers or children can often distract drivers when in the car,” she said. “Children can often fight or yell in cars causing the driver to turn around or be inattentive while at the wheel. “For teen drivers other passengers in the car can be a distraction if they play loud music, become boisterous, or encourage the driver to take unsafe risks.” She said other distractions can include using a mobile phone or trying to do other activities like eating, drinking or changing the radio or music while driving. “Using a mobile phone while driving was made illegal in 2009 and people can be fined and receive demerit points if they do this. Unfortunately this is still a visible problem and it is a serious cause of driver distraction,” Mrs Tinning said. The survey asks drivers to rate some passenger actions and how they affect
