Having your child diagnosed with a serious illness is every parent’s dread, but the silver lining for Tristian and Paula Park of Rolleston has been overwhelming community support. u by Kent Caddick

Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae will be this year’s Hororata Highland Games Chieftain. Sir Jerry, who served with the Scots Guards when they were based in Germany, said he was looking forward to attending the Games. “Many New Zealanders have Scottish ancestry and are increasingly rediscovering their roots in Scotland,” he said. “I’m looking forward to supporting the games as Chieftain and participating in what is becoming a significant Scottish cultural event in New Zealand.” Hororata Highland Games event co-ordinator Claire Cowles said the organising committee was thrilled to confirm the Governor-General’s

attendance, and was pleased he had accepted the Chieftain title. The Games were first launched in 2011 as a fundraising initiative for the badly damaged community less than a year on from the devastating magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck in the early hours of September 4, 2010. The event was quickly becoming the premier event on the New Zealand Scottish cultural calendar. Ms Cowles said it was a traditional Scottish highland games with a uniquely Kiwi twist. “We keep the Games fun and relevant to all Kiwis, not just those with Scottish ancestry.”

Selwyn Aquatic Centre takes out architecture awards u by Kent Caddick

The Selwyn Aquatic Centre has won two awards at the 2013 Canterbury Architecture Awards, taking out a Public Architecture and a Sustainable Architecture award. Judges praised the centre’s clear and direct design concept, the building’s sense of lightness, the extensive use of natural light along the full length of the façade and the heat recovery and ventilation systems, which reduce power use at the centre. Alex Head, of architects Warren and Mahoney, who designed the Aquatic Centre said the building design was conceived to respond to its natural

greenfield setting and to reflect the local environment of Selwyn through the play of natural light, views and local materials. Selwyn Aquatic Facilities Manager Kathy Moore says that people who visit the centre have been impressed with it. “We have received many compliments from customers who like the sense of light and space at the facility.” The centre includes an air to air heat recovery

Everyone in Canterbury is familiar with the Canterbury A&P Show held in November, which has the Show Day holiday weekend associated with it. However, there are a number of local A&P shows which are well worth going to and much less busy for those who do not like crowds. The first local A&P show to kick off the season was the Ellesmere A&P show held at Leeston over the weekend. This is followed in November by the Courtenay A&P show in Kirwee, the Duvauchelle and Banks Peninsula’s shows which are both held in January, and the Malvern A&P show at Sheffield in March. What appeals to me so much about these A&P shows is that they are a wonderful way for the community to come together and celebrate. They are a unique opportunity for young and old alike to show off their livestock,

produce, homecraft or baking and feel rightly proud of their achievements. It takes a huge effort to put on these shows and it wouldn’t happen without many hours of hard work from the dedicated committees, including all of the convenors and other helpers. I want to pay tribute to all of these people who work tirelessly to allow these events to take place every year. As your elected Member of Parliament, I always make a special effort to attend as many of the local A&P shows as possible as I find it is a great opportunity to catch up with people and hear about what has been happening in their communities. So please do come up and say hello if you see me at your local A&P show over the coming months. ¢

Biodiversity funding available Environment Canterbury is inviting Selwyn landowners and community groups to apply for a share of approximately $3 million in annual funding to protect and restore Canterbury’s unique native biodiversity. ECan’s Biodiversity team leader, Dr Jo Abbott says the biodiversity funds, including the Canterbury Water Management Strategy Immediate Steps fund, provides financial support to communities and individuals where it can make a real difference. “We want to make sure most funding goes to on-the-ground biodiversity projects that people can see and take part in,” Dr Abbott said. “Projects that will deliver the greatest biodiversity benefits are most likely to be supported. The top priority is for projects to protect areas that already have high biodiversity value, such as fencing an area of native bush or wetland.

Hughes hangs on to winner’s armband u by Kent Caddick

Rolleston’s Danielle Hughes managed to keep hold of her Top Wip armband at the latest Scurry New Zealand competition at Canterbury Agricultural Park recently but failed to make the finals of the event.

p Rolleston’s Danielle Hughes and her horse Whiskey Runner competing in an earlier Scurry NZ event in Dunedin

Twelve riders and their ponies or miniature horses lined up for the heats with only the fastest four going through to the final. Hughes went into the event wearing the Top Wip armband, which is Scurry NZ’s version of the Ranfurly Shield. Oxford’s Becky Pocock was selected as the challenger for this meeting and although she completed the course in a faster time than Hughes she incurred four seconds of penalty points which dropped her down the rankings to 11th. but, like Pocock, failed to make the final four. The top four competitors to make it to the scurry-off (a shortened course with fewer gates) were: Fairlie’s Kirsty Anderson with both of her drives, Dude and Casper, Dunedin’s Brian Shanks with the miniature horse Spot and Lara Nicholson of Halswell driving the speedy Boo. In a very close final Anderson and Dude took top honours coming home in a time of 42.6 seconds, Shanks was second on 43.7s and Anderson third with Casper on 43.9s having been the only one to knock a ball and accruing two penalty seconds. Nicholson’s Boo had unfortunately run out of steam after having a fantastic second heat and could only manage fourth with a time of 45.3 seconds. With her bright green wheels and reins Nicholson was a favourite with many of the younger members of the 200 strong audience. Nicholson said it was a great way to start off the new scurry season and that Boo will be back fitter and stronger next time around. ¢

Keen Selwyn golf enthusiasts and those who want to be a part of the action are encouraged to put their hands up as volunteers for the 2014 New Zealand Open. The NZ Open tournament, a tier one event on the PGA Tour of Australasia, will be held from February 27 to March 2, 2014 at The Hills golf course and Millbrook Golf Resort in Queenstown. NZ Open Tournament Director Michael Glading said with the new format we need the support of even more volunteers than in previous years. Tournament organisers are looking for up to 500 volunteers to assist for either the entire four days of the event or for just the two days (Thursday and Friday) at Millbrook, leaving time to watch the final two days’ play at The Hills. This year’s event will require the work of an army of volunteers to carry out roles such as carrying scorecards, marshalling on course, ‘ball spotting’, overseeing the leader board, walker

scorers, inputting data in the media centre or working as a shuttle driver. Organisers are encouraging Selwyn golf clubs and other community groups to bring a group of members together to ‘adopt a hole’ to marshal. Volunteers are asked for a minimum commitment of six hours on any given day, and in return will benefit from free tournament admission and parking, a commemorative shirt and cap, lunch each day, and a special ‘thank you’ function on the Saturday night. Those who volunteer for four days will receive a complimentary round of golf at either The Hills or Millbrook and twoday volunteers a complimentary round of golf at Millbrook. Census confirms Selwyn’s rapid growth The recent census information confirms what Selwyn District Council consenting staff already knew — that their district is the fastest growing in New Zealand. Selwyn's population grew from 33,642 to 44,595 between 2006 and 2013, a 33% increase. The average growth for New Zealand as a whole during that period was 5.3%. Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe says the population growth shown in the census data is consistent with the high level of building activity happening in Selwyn. "Our building and resource consent staff have been incredibly busy over the past two years and are doing a good job of keeping up with the demand for services," he said. In the year to June 2013, the council issued a record number of new dwelling consents, 1,084 in total, a 76% increase on the 616 consents issued the previous year. Selwyn also experienced the strongest economic growth of any district in New Zealand in 2012, with employment growing by 9.5%, compared to the national average of 1%. 1,200 new jobs were created in the district last year. Mayor Coe said the census data will help council to plan for the future and to advocate for new government services and facilities for the district.

Potatoes and tomatoes a happy marriage A new plant has been released which will have vegetable growers in a spin. The Potato Tom brings a grafted tomato and potato together in one plant. The commercial production of the Potato Tom is a Kiwi first according to Andrew Boylan general manager of Tharfield Nursery which produces and markets the new plant. “It’s gone viral,

we can’t believe the response. The phones have been running hot with garden centres throughout New Zealand vying to get hold of this new and exciting concept.” The Potato Tom brings double the fun and productivity to the home gardener by combining a juicy Gardeners Delight tomato and a crop of the popular eating potato Agria from the one plant. As both potatoes and tomatoes are from the same family the two plants are graft compatible and can therefore be grafted together. “It’s the perfect combination that produces a good crop of both potatoes and beautiful cherry tomatoes. You get tomatoes in summer, potatoes in autumn.” “We have had calls from those who have been gardening for decades. This concept appeals to all sectors of the gardening public,” Boylan said. ¢

Planting and sowing seeds for best results u by Michael Coulter

Now that the days are longer and warmer the time to start planting and sowing seeds in the vegetable and flower garden is here. To get the best results we need to do the right thing at the right time. Traditionally plants and seeds that need constant warm growing conditions are never planted before Labour Weekend and are often left until Show Week. I still say that this is the best time as the weather is much more settled and plants will not get any setbacks. When sowing seeds it is wise to read the back of the seed packet and follow the directions as to how, where and when to sow the seeds. This is the best information you can follow. When sowing small seeds in my veggie garden I use seed raising potting mix to cover the seeds. This helps to see where the rows are and also gives good weed free and moisture retention conditions to help germination. It has always been good practice to rotate the type of plants in the garden to help with pest and disease control from one season to the next but one must also be aware as to the height of plants so that all plants will get the light that they may need. The planting of seedlings whether they are vegetable or flower plants is very much the same. First select the right place for the plants then dig in some compost with an all-purpose fertiliser. Ensure the plants are well watered a couple of hours before putting them in the ground, then plant into the soil at the same depth as before. Firm the roots in away from the stem to give good contact with the soil and water.

Once the plants are growing well or the seeds are up, keep the garden weedfree. Weeding is best done when weeds are small. You will also need to look out for pests such as slugs. If you follow this and keep your plants well watered then I am sure good success will follow. Remember the right plant in the right place at the right time is the secret to a great garden.

Health and Fitness Discoveries in the science and art of healing

Something on your mind?

u by Michael J McCammon ND

Counselling, Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy.

Much is made of the tremendous advances in modern medicine but how many of these advances do we give credit to the wisdom of our ancestors?

It is true that we have had huge advances in the art and science of healing over the last 100 or so years. We hear every day about miracles of surgeries and it is right to be impressed and grateful for these things. However, in the realm of what could be termed ‘personal’ diseases — diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and more — the statistics are appalling. How have we survived all these years without drugs or surgery? Let’s look at some of the modern ‘wonder drugs’ and their ancient origins. A form of the natural birth control pill was actually used by the natives of the Trobriand Islands. For centuries the young women of the tribe consumed the wild yam and few pregnancies ever occurred before marriage. As for antibiotics, herbalists have long used sphagnum moss, calendula, garlic and a number of plants with antibiotic properties long before Louis Pasteur ‘discovered’ penicillin. Actually mouldy bread (the source of penicillin) was familiar to many before Pasteur. The control of pain using morphine from the opium poppy was used by the Arabs over 1000 years before modern anaesthesia and painkillers. Many plants and herbs are renowned for their anodyne (pain killing) properties. Many chemical drugs are based on compounds found in plants. For example, the idea of valium comes from the valerian root, and aspirin from the salicylates found in willow bark. These medicines were known by indigenous

experimentation, all human cultures have proven over time, the efficacy of plant medicine. Are we not seeing now a tremendous resurge in the use of natural foods and remedies where in the past these ideas were considered hippie or silly greeny talk? Today over 75% of the world’s population uses herbal medicine as their primary means of health care. ¢

p Nasturtiums — the leaves flowers and capers (seeds) are a natural antibiotic and antiseptic with abundant levels of vitamin C. They can be used in salads and have a pungent peppery taste

cultures for thousands of years. Herbalists choose to use plant remedies because of their proven efficacy and their low risk of side effects. Most diseases will respond positively to the use of plants, without side effects and relatively cheaply. The use of plants as medicine is backed by the longest clinical trial in history. By observation and

Be Safe Over Labour Weekend / Canterbury Show Weekend With two long weekends approaching roads in the Selwyn District will become increasingly busy over the next few weeks. Long weekends always bring an increase in traffic volumes, with more motorists driving for longer periods than usual and many also towing boats, caravans and trailers. When planning to head off for a break over either of these weekends, always allow enough time to get to your destination, drive with patience and avoid taking unnecessary risks. Share the Road: If you are towing, your maximum speed limit on the open road is 90 km/h. Keep left and pull over when it is safe to let other vehicles pass. Keep a safe following distance between yourself and the vehicle in front. This gives you enough distance should the vehicle in front of you stop suddenly. Always watch for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly young children as they can be very unpredictable. Give them plenty of space when passing. Driver Tiredness: Holiday driving often means spending several hours behind the wheel. Long journeys can be tiring, and tiredness can be fatal if you don’t recognise the signs. There are simple ways to avoid fatigue and improve your alertness: • Get plenty of sleep before your journey, and try to drive at times of the day when you are normally awake; • Plan for rest breaks from driving every couple of hours. Get out of your vehicle and even take a

short walk to improve alertness. If you feel tired, take a short nap or if possible, share the driving. • Use air conditioning if your vehicle has it. Cool air will keep you more alert and will help avoid frustration and stress, which are major causes of fatigue. Concentration at intersections: Patience and extra concentration at intersections is a must. A give way sign means, slowing down and be prepared to stop and give way to other road users if necessary. A Stop sign means coming to a complete stop, then checking for traffic and giving way if required to do so. Early indication of your intentions to turn, change lanes or pull over is essential and can help to avoid a crash. Buckle Up: No one wants to be involved in a crash. Wearing a safety belt reduces the risk of serious injury by 40% and it takes only a split second to buckle up. It is the driver’s responsibility to make sure that all passengers under 15 years are restrained either in a seat belt or an approved child seat suitable to their size and weight. The fine of $150 for each person not restrained in the vehicle can be enforced. For more information, contact Ngaire Tinning, Road Safety Co-ordinator, Selwyn District Council, Telephone (03) 347 2901, ngaire.tinning@selwyn. govt.nz
