“Both congregations who worship here on Sunday mornings have been in Darfield since the late 1800s. In the 1970s they made the decision to take down their 100-plus-year-old wooden church buildings and together build a church that could be used by the Methodist, Anglican and Presbyterian congregations,” says Archdeacon Susan Baldwin. “The project was initiated by The Rev Hugh Paterson in 1970 and took nine years of planning and building until Trinity Church was opened in the spring of 1979. working and ministering together since that time. “From across the Malvern district, 135 people including two visitors, from South Africa and China, attended our celebrations at last Sunday morning’s service. Several speakers recounted the story of Trinity Church and church musicians, Elizabeth Blackburn and Peter Van Siclen played for the service. “The Rev Hugh Paterson, Evan Frew and Graham Taege described how the project began and was developed from 1970 to 1979.

“Then Reverend Lionel Brown, Christine Anderson, Adele Langlands and myself described the four decades of the church’s ministry and work in the community. “Along with Lynmaree Sopoaga, we thank all the helpers who blessed the local businesses along the main street of Darfield and in the Trinity car park after school, by delivering pieces of birthday cake last week. “We also wish to thank our musicians and the anonymous sponsor and her family for providing a generous and sumptuous celebratory morning tea.” 

“We teach all pupils about fire safety annually as things change every year, and we need to keep them up to date. They learn things like talking to their parents to ensure they know their phone numbers, farm numbers and addresses in case they are the ones who need to call the emergency services,” says Matt McIntyre. “We do a mock house fire with an inflatable house that is pitch black. The children learned to crawl and find their way out, so they know how dark it gets, and how high the smoke rises in a real fire. “The students from Room 2 then surprised us with a poster they made. It shows the community with houses and cats up trees. We hung it in the station straight away, and it really brightened the place up. “They also raised $100 through a social science project doing odd jobs as they decided we are the heroes of the community and wanted to show their appreciation.”

The children wanted to get something for the fire station volunteers. “They had ideas like a toaster, a SodaStream machine and a lolly jar. We really appreciate what they did as we don’t expect anything. It was really special and adds a nice touch from our close-knit community. We are very unique and really pull together through thick and thin. “We are also working on a logo to personalise our T-shirts and jackets when we go to places such as the Sky Tower Stair Climb. The children are presenting their ideas. The artwork we have seen so far is outstanding and shows what they believe our community is.” School principal Dave Robinson says they appreciate all the fire brigade do teaching fire safety. “It is a real benefit to the school, and our children love having them here. The firemen always comment on how much information the children remember from year to year.” ¢

Celebrating New Zealand’s oldest u by Ann van Engelen

Christchurch residents Nina Brown and Ron Hermanns have celebrated 108 years on the planet with the candles lit just one week apart.

On September 19 Miss Brown had her special day at Windsor Care Retirement Village while Mr Hermanns celebrated on September 25 at the Air Force Museum’s Aircraft Hall with fellow second world war veterans, dignitaries, friends and family. Miss Brown enjoyed a cup of tea and birthday cake with friends and received a card from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Mayor Lianne Dalziel, the Queen and Government House. When she was younger, she was a teacher and travelled to England in the 1930s, until the war broke out and she was returned home. She then taught students throughout the war on a variety of subjects. She never married or had children. Born in 1911 in Canada, Mr Hermanns’ family moved to New Zealand in 1914. In 1937, he joined

the Wellington Territorial Squadron as an aircraft rigger and the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1939. He was deployed to Vanuatu (then New Hebrides), in 1943 where he worked with American troops servicing aircraft. During the war, he collected shells and discarded aircraft pieces and created ‘trench art’, which he donated to the Air Force Museum of New Zealand in 2009. Mr Hermanns also never married or had children. Fellow Cantabrian 106-year-old Bill Mitchell celebrated with him. On turning 108 years old, Mr Hermanns says “I can’t say it feels any different, but it is different from most people.” He said he has several cards from the Queen now and the cake on the day was lovely. His ‘trench art’ is on display at the Air Force Museum. ¢

Rebecca Gilchrist started the On the Spectrum support group as an opportunity for people living or working with children or family members who have ‘hidden disabilities’ to interact with each other. “Our philosophy is to have ‘real’ connections with other parents and possibly develop new friendships outside of the group,” says Rebecca. “When we moved to Rolleston in 2012 after the earthquakes I found as a mother, looking for any community support to help with a child with ADHD, there wasn’t anything around, so I started my own.” Rebecca runs a very relaxed and supportive coffee group for anyone dealing with ‘neurodivergence’ including parents, teachers, grandparents, sports coaches and caregivers. “It is a safe place to discuss issues that arise bringing up children with autism, ADHD, sensory problems, dyspraxia, ASD or social difficulties. Brains that function differently are what we are all about. “We share ideas that work around food, behaviour, bedtime routines, good professional contacts or doctors in the community, strategies and visuals to share with schools. Three Christchurch walking tracks have been merged to create a scenic 22km loop, and people can experience it for themselves during The Breeze Walking Festival 2019.

p The scenic route starts at the Groynes Reserve

Walkers who want to see what the Otukaikino Waimakariri area has to offer can join rangers from Environment Canterbury, Christchurch City Council and The Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust on Saturday, September 28 at 8.30am for a guided six-hour walk. Space is limited and bookings are essential. Starting at the Groynes Reserve, walkers will follow the Otukaikino Stream to the Waimakariri River on an adventure on Christchurch’s northern edge. Environment Canterbury parks team leader James Page said this network of tracks represented a great recreational asset. “It is a positive example of what can be achieved when the public and private sector come together to create something valuable for the community,” Page said.

Below average and that’s good u by Mike Isle

Council debt is rising across New Zealand, and Selwyn is no exception — however, we are well below the national average. The latest Infometrics’ monthly report says across the board councils’ debt to income ratio has now topped 200 per cent. Christchurch has the highest debt ratio at 291.7 per cent, followed by Auckland at 285.0 per cent. Infometrics’ 10-year prediction for 2019 to 2028 shows an average debt to income ratio of 215.9 per cent for the 77 councils surveyed, up from 188.1 from the previous 10 years. Selwyn’s ratio is 114.2 per cent, up from 108.7 per cent, but still well below the national average and giving it a ranking of 42 out of the 77 councils. Infometrics’ senior economist Brad Olsen said higher gross debt ratios do not necessarily show that councils are borrowing too much. Instead, high gross debt ratios can sometimes more accurately highlight a lack of income needed to grow, even as the population has grown.

He said that the need to fund increasing capital investments in infrastructure means that different funding options are important going forward. “Recent research shows that local government in New Zealand receives the smallest comparative share of total government funding in the developed world. “The small share of funding illustrates the need for more funding from central government to local government, either as pure cash payments or as projectbased subsidies.” Mr Olsen said councils face a tough choice, with many competing issues and a small pool of money. During the next decade, he said, councils are expected to replace rundown assets, ahead of projects, which would improve service levels or add more capacity to cope with growth.

Tube slide at Foster Park closed

Bollywood coming to Rolleston

u by Mike Isle

The Indian Festival of Navaratri will be celebrated with a Kiwi twist at the Rolleston Community Centre on October 12.

Selwyn District Council has temporarily closed the tube slide at Foster Park for repairs after cracks were found in the plastic.

p The tube slide is closed but the rest of the park is open

The cracking is near the top of the slide, and new parts have been ordered to replace the damaged area. The council has closed the slide as a precaution while the parts are manufactured and installed and further testing is carried out, including inspection by a structural engineer, to establish the cause of the cracking. Increased use of the slide over the school holidays also had the potential to speed up the damage and increase the safety risk, the council said.

Contractors have been monitoring the slide daily since being made aware of the cracking on Friday, and there have been no reports of injury or signs of further damage. The metal embankment slide remains open for use, along with all other equipment at the playground. Construction of the park began in 2014. These innovative, fun and educational hubs cater to the interests of children and parents or caregivers alike. We are delighted that we can showcase a wonderful mix of old and new activities and entertainment whilst highlighting topical interests through our fun and interactive hubs, which will include nutrition, sport, wellbeing, social skills, creativity and sensory skills. “Maintaining a Selwyn District Parenting Network, which promotes

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

The countdown has begun u by Andy Bryenton

It’s now officially only 10 weeks until the end of school. Eleven until the end of work for many of us and 12 until our chimneys are invaded by a jolly bearded man with a penchant for not including double-A batteries with his presents. For those who embrace the true meaning of summer (according to a very specific gospel), the Holy Days are here already. Yes, daylight savings means it’s time to disdainfully walk out on the designer kitchen you spent all winter installing, at great expense. It’s time to bring sacrifices of meat wrapped in tinfoil to the charcoal-eating idol of the backyard, the barbecue. Some over-zealous acolytes might end up sacrificing their eyebrows as well. The barbecue as we know it today was invented by pirates, but it was perfected by the ‘pitmasters’ of America’s deep south, who took all the cuts of meat unwanted by the more affluent and turned them into culinary gold. The secret to a great barbecue, according to these gurus, is threefold. Cut your own wood, and make your own charcoal. Prepare your meat, with rubs and marinades to add tenderness and flavour. Cook slow and low, letting the smoky flavour insinuate down

p The combination of fire and food brings out a primal urge to barbecue as daylight savings kicks in

to the bone. While step one can be sidestepped by selecting good quality charcoal and adding flavourful wood chips in moderation, there really is no way around the other two. Try this; a quarter cup of golden syrup, then a tablespoon each of smoked paprika, olive oil, crushed garlic and vinegar. Add two tablespoons of brown sugar, then a dollop of barbecue sauce and a dash of your favourite hot sauce. Mix it all up and brush and spoon it over brisket or ribs, for example, then leave

to soak it all in inside the fridge the night before. Cook slow and long for more flavour and meat that falls off the bone, and don’t forget lots of coleslaw, mac and cheese and potato salad on the side. If you’re buying a new ‘barbie’ this year, remember they are not all created equal. Look for solid construction to hold in the heat, good welds and a sturdy frame. Then it’s just a matter of carefully lighting it up without losing those brows and a few tantalising hours of smelling the goodness develop! ¢

SORTED FOR SUMMER Get ready for the open road

Pay attention!

For many of us, summer means one thing — road trips. Whether it’s a camping holiday in the outdoors, a long-distance visit to relatives for Christmas or just a plain old ramble through some of the world’s best scenery while the sun shines, all this means it’s time to give your vehicles some care and attention. For those looking to tow the boat or caravan away to a holiday sun-spot, the first concern is likely to be sorting out a new WOF for both the towed wheels and the towing vehicle. A rust treatment now will pay dividends by the end of summer, so it’s not a bad plan to sort it out at the same time as checking the electrical systems and gas appliances in boats, campers and caravans. Of course, some people like to travel light, and summer is the best time to consider getting out and about on two wheels. New Zealand has some find motorcycling roads, and the sight of tourists on ‘adventure’ style bikes following the highway is nothing new. It’s easy to follow suit nowadays with new Learner Approved motorbikes coming in sizes that can amply support a long and comfortable ride for an adult. Talk to your local bike dealership about how to get your licence, and at the same time invest in safety gear that will go the distance. Perhaps the best of both worlds is expressed by a quirky new vehicle, which has been showing up in increasing numbers on the roads. Can-Am’s Spyder and its new variant, the Ryker are open to the air like a bike, and even have handlebars and a saddle. They have two wheels at the front for the stability of a car, and one driving wheel at the back. Best yet, the Spyder

VALUING WORKING DOGS by Ann van Engelen

Bex Hughes-Baynes is one of New Zealand’s winning dog trialists, a hunter and a shepherd, who has spent many hours upskilling her dog handling abilities.

“I grew up on a dairy grazing and sheep and beef unit. I always had a love for animals and was involved in horse and hound hunting with my mum when I was younger,” says Bex. “I am now on horseback every day as a shepherd mustering sheep, docking and any other farm work that comes my way.” Bex works as a shepherd on large stations and is involved in sheep dog

trials. She placed second in the New Zealand Dog Trials in 2018, and sixth in the South Island Championships. “I won the first round and then got into a run-off with contestants from across the South Island. I run heading dogs, but I enjoy the huntaways more due to the countryside I work on. In the last 12 months, the girls within dog trialling have done phenomenally well. “In 2018, when I placed second in the

country — it was the highest placing a woman ever got. This year myself and two other women were in the run-off. Out of 300 competitors, there were only 10 women, and my friend Jo Waugh won that round in the South Island. In the New Zealand competition, Steph Tweed won. It is a good sport that girls are excelling at and the best part is we are

all very good friends, and that makes it extra special. “I have been shepherding since I was 19 years old and got into dog trialling when I started working at Paparatu Station as we would go to our friend Allen Irwin’s and train our dogs with him. Being involved with dog trials is a good way to upskill yourself and learn from

the older guys. It is a time to socialise and see what new dogs are out there. Every dog is different and training them isn’t really hard, you just need to spend a lot of time with them. It is great to see what other people do and you take what you learn and turn it into your own style. Bex says all of her dogs are very well looked after with each having their own beds and coats. “They work extremely hard and deserve nothing but the best. I always have pups coming and going as I breed and rear a lot. I pick what I think is going to be the best that will suit me.

Good dogs are important as my income relies on them. You are paid to do a job mustering, and if you can’t do it efficiently, people won’t get you back. You need to be able to direct each dog and have it listen to you. It takes many hours and travelling to get advice, but it is worth it. “Mustering other people’s stock is a huge responsibility, and they need to be able to trust their staff. I bring the stock down on horseback, and depending on what time of year it is, depends on the chores. With docking, I transfer animals from paddocks to the required

yards, from one beat to the next. Some stations are huge, so you need to be organised and confident. “Younger people would find the dog trials really interesting, and we need more people to come through and train as judges, and helpers because if they don’t turn up the sport will die out. These days we are so lucky because in the past no one would pass on their training information. Now if you are willing to learn — people are more than happy to help.

DARFIELD’S BOUTIQUE MILK BY ANN VAN ENGELEN JAMES AND CHLOE DAVIDSON ARE BRINGING THE CLINK OF GLASS MILK BOTTLES BACK TO CANTERBURY THROUGH THEIR BOUTIQUE MILK BUSINESS.

“T

here is something nostalgic about having fresh milk delivered to your door from the farm. We leased 24 hectares of land and established Roan Farm to produce A2 milk to sell door-todoor,” said Chloe. Animal welfare, the environment, sustainability and the consumer are a key focus for the farm to fridge business. “The conventional dairy industry has some image problems, and we want to lead by example and show what is achievable. Our cows are grass-fed, and we plan to leave the calves with their mothers while they are being milked instead of being separated. Our

A2 milk will be delivered in reusable glass bottles.” James is a former FMG Young Farmer of the Year grand finalist. “It can be disheartening when you work long hours, and your milk gets collected by the milk tanker, and you never see it again. “I want to interact with the people who buy and drink our milk and share the story of where it comes from,” said James. “We are farming our land organically and are in the conversion stage, which is a three-year process until we are fully organically certified. We have been replacing a lot of dryland cocksfoot

pastures with 20-odd species of herbs, pasture and legumes.” James and Chloe spotted mobile milking equipment for sale on Trade Me last year. “We knew that if we didn’t take a gamble and buy the equipment, then, we probably never would. It is a milking shed on a trailer, which provides huge flexibility. We move it every day so our cows, which are 100 per cent grass-fed, walk up onto the trailer and are milked in the paddock. It suits the ‘calf at foot system’ as the calves wait nearby until

the cows are milked.” Roan Farm is milking 22 cows, including a number of milking shorthorns, with plans to expand. Once the milk is harvested, it is pasteurised and bottled. “Pasteurised milk has a longer shelf life, so there is less wastage, and it means we can sell it in cafes and supermarkets. “Initially, the milk will be delivered to Darfield, West Melton and Christchurch. Routes will increase with demand. A local cafe has come on board to sell the milk, as have a couple of small

We appreciate the patience and understanding we are getting from people because we didn’t foresee this kind of demand. We have gone from nothing to producing 700 litres in a few days. Our intentions are to support other small businesses, that is why we have kept with smaller stores and cafes. “Our goal is to keep everything local where possible as we focus on ensuring that the land we farm off is regeneratively farmed and free of chemicals and pesticides.
