The many signs of breast cancer  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

A casual comment from her husband as she hopped out of the shower may have saved the life of 47-year-old Selwyn resident Val Evans.

“My husband noticed a bruise on my breast. I had a look and saw a faint discolouration and tiny puckering,” Val said. October’s breast cancer awareness campaign has highlighted the need to be aware of changes in nipples, skin, breast shape and size or unusual breast pain. “I never thought to look for a bruise,” she said. “The earlier you get it the better. Look for anything different. Any changes at all. A pucker, a dent, a dimple.” Val had been vigilant at checking for lumps and had undergone a mammogram the year before. “I felt under the bruised area and could feel that there was a decent size lump. I knew the lump had grown very quickly and in the last four months.” Knowing things were not right she booked in to see her doctor the next morning. “I could tell by the doctor’s expression that things were serious. I was sent in to have a mammogram that day. He didn’t tell me, but I knew it was cancer.” Val was given a mammogram, an ultrasound and then the following day a biopsy was taken. Four days later she was told the results of the biopsy — Grade 3 hormone positive cancer. “Hormone cancers feed from the hormones. That’s why it grew so quickly.” An MRI revealed the presence of a second lump deep in the chest wall. “My first reaction was that the breast had to go, and the other one as well.

 Val Evans, seated, celebrates her early diagnosis and successful breast cancer surgery with friend and supporter Diana Kermode

I wanted them both off but the doctor said the other one was fine and it would affect healing time.” Everything was happening very quickly. Two days after the MRI Val had her surgery. “It was like I was on a train going 100 miles an hour. I didn’t know if it was ever going to stop.” Surgery involved removing the breast and scrapping all tissue off back to the

chest wall. Twenty lymph nodes were also removed to find out if the cancer had spread. Tests revealed that none of the lymph nodes were infected. This meant that Val has not needed follow-up treatment such as chemotherapy. Val is currently having three monthly check-ups. “I’ve learnt to live for today and to find something good about every day.” 

Darfield medical centre could open in December  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Selwyn Central ward representative Sarah Walters has been re-selected as deputy mayor of the Selwyn district.

 Councillor Sarah Walters gets down to work after being confirmed as Selwyn’s deputy mayor for a second term

Under new legislation Mayor-elect Kelvin Coe had the right to select his deputy but Mr Coe gave up that right to enable councillors to choose his deputy. Mayor Coe said for the deputy mayor to operate effectively they needed the support of all councillors so he decided to leave it to councillors to vote on the matter, although after discussing it with councillors he nominated Sarah Walters for the position. The selection was finalised during a two-day retreat held prior to last week’s first council meeting in which the mayor, all councillors and members of the Malvern and Selwyn Central community boards were sworn in. Mrs Walters said she was happy councillors and the mayor had shown confidence in her. “I have learnt a lot over the last three years and I can build on that experience

using the skills I have developed which will make me more effective in the next three years. “We had some robust discussion during the retreat about our roles around the council table and there have been some changes in the interest of making us a more effective council.” Mrs Walters said while there were a lot of familiar faces around the council table she doesn’t expect it to be more of the same. “It is good from a continuity perspective that most councillors have been returned to council as it means we can hit the ground running and we do not have to spend a lot of time bringing people up to speed.” There was only one new face at the council table when it sat for its inaugural meeting and that was Tai Tapu farmer Grant Miller who replaced the now retired Lindsay Philps. 

Work has resumed on Darfield’s long awaited medical centre following successful negotiations between Selwyn District Council staff and tenant Dr Johan Vlok. The centre which was built earlier this year has remained vacant due to sound proofing concerns raised by Dr Vlok. SDC Property Services co-ordinator Rob Allen said Darfield Medical Centre Limited had indicated they required a higher sound proof rating than detailed in the build contract specifications so they have agreed to meet the additional cost. “This will be paid by council and collected in an additional rent to the medical centre practice.” The provisional date for completion of the sound proofing is December 6, 2013. This date is dependent on the delivery of acoustic doors which have been ordered from Australia, according to Mr Allen. “If the sound proofing works are completed on time and a code

compliance certificate is issued by council then it is expected medical staff will be able to relocate into the building and commence operation from about December 16. “The final decision on an opening date is ultimately with the medical centre once the code compliance certificate is issued.” Mr Allan said council was satisfied with the outcome of the negotiations. 

THE RECORD

For the Record..... Time to get involved

All for one and one for all

 by Sam Broughton, Malvern Ward councillor

 by Sarah Walters, deputy mayor Selwyn

The last few weeks have brought their fair share of extra pressure.

My last column started with a couple of numbers, so I’m going to continue that theme — one.

Young people are studying hard for NCEA exams, families are deciding to which summer activities and sports they will commit, lawns are growing and the garden is requiring more attention, tailing and calving requires extra hands, while dreams and decisions for 2014 begin to take shape. On top of these annual Spring events we have had to cope with the mess and power outages of the wind storms which have come on the back of a dry Summer and Winter floods. As ironic as it may seem I think this all highlights what a great place Selwyn is to live. We have high quality local schools offering a range of study options. We

Selwyn District was formed in 1989 with the amalgamation of Ellesmere, Malvern and part of Paparua County Councils, yet on many occasions we are still not seen as one district. Sometimes that is because of the way the council manages things, such as the targeted rating structure where only users or residents of an area pay for that service — community centres, water and sewerage supplies, for example. Sometimes it is because priority is given to one area due to need. For example the significant planning exercises done in conjunction with other councils and agencies, particularly in relation to growth, such as the Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy (UDS) covering eastern parts of the district, and the township structure planning undertaken in Lincoln, Rolleston and Prebbleton or the upgrade of our libraries, starting with Leeston, then Darfield, the mobile library and currently Lincoln. But it doesn’t mean that other areas are unimportant or forgotten about. Every exercise undertaken by the council does benefit everyone else. For example had the council not been involved in the UDS, it is unlikely subsequent planning, for instance the District Development Strategy currently underway for the remainder of the district, would have been undertaken as the value of such an exercise would not have been recognised.

are blessed with many volunteers running local clubs and groups that allow families to gather around shared interests. Our environment allows us to grow food and gardens which bring satisfaction and joy. The employment provided by local businesses provides indoor service related industries and outdoor physical labour. There is a range of local groups for those who have ended their working life and are enjoying the extra time they now have. Selwyn has offerings for people of all ages. The trials the weather has brought over the past year has only reinforced the close connections within communities that usually go unnoticed but spring to life when neighbours require a hand. If you want to be a part of making Selwyn a better place I encourage you to stand in the upcoming local community committee elections. Get involved in your local hall or pool or reserve and share some of your time and ideas as we contribute to Selwyn together. Whether you are 18 or 85 your input matters. If you’re interested give me a bell and I can let you know about your local involvement options. 

Each library upgrade has resulted in a significant increase in library users and shows that this work is valued by our community. Our first indoor public swimming centre in Rolleston has provided a facility well used by people from across the district, but has also brought a fairer funding model and a new level of aquatic expertise into our district to benefit all school and community pools. While the increased population of the district is not evenly distributed, it has brought many benefits for all the district and will continue to do so. We are one district, one that has a lot going for it. Let’s work together to make it even better. 

Rural Women New Zealand is backing the retention of the rural delivery service by New Zealand Post. Under the recently signed 2013 Deed of Understanding between NZ Post and the Government urban areas may see a reduction to a three-day mail service from July 1, 2015, but the five day a week rural delivery service will remain unchanged. Rural Women national president, Liz Evans, said rural delivery was a wraparound distribution service which is part of the fabric that holds rural communities together. “In our submission, which Minister Amy Adams has acknowledged, we highlighted that the rural delivery is so much more than just a mail service and anything that threatened its sustainability would have widespread unintended consequences. “Our rural delivery contractors provide a lifeline, delivering supplies, repairs and spare parts, animal health remedies, medicines and courier parcels. “The five-day service ensures people are able to run their farming enterprises and other rural businesses effectively, even from remote locations.” She said rural delivery contractors also pick up mail and parcels, meaning that it’s feasible to run a production-based business from

a rural location. “These businesses breathe life into rural communities, as we have seen through our Enterprising Rural Women Awards.” Ms Evans said Rural Women NZ’s plea to preserve the existing rural delivery service was also based on the limitations of other communications facilities which urban people take for granted. “In many rural areas there is limited or no cellphone coverage and we are still dealing with dial-up broadband connections in many cases.” 

The Selwyn District Council is introducing its monthly four-week SeniorNet course into Darfield with Lincoln the other centre currently receiving them. "Many services are now available online from banking, to shopping, and accessing government services," council community development advisor Lisa Larkin said. "It is often more convenient for older people to use these services at home through the internet or email than to leave the house, especially if they have mobility issues or don't have access to transport. “SeniorNet teaches people how to use email, the internet and other computing skills in a friendly and supportive environment and they can then apply their skills at home." Ms Larkin said many who enrol in the classes also want to learn how to use Facebook, email and tablet computers like iPads so they can keep in touch with family and friends. THE RECORD

Starting life on a high country station Castle Hill Station owner and author Christine Fernyhough’s latest children’s book parallels her own story of leaving city life to go live on a hill country station. In Phylys the Farm Truck Fernyhough tells the story of a new truck arriving from the city. The flash city truck has to deal with steep hills, wide rivers and rough tracks on the farm, as well as taunts and doubts about her suitability as a farm vehicle from the animals living on the station. The Record’s Belinda Cullen-Reid caught up with the author and asked her about life on the station and writing. In the back of your new book Phylys the Farm Truck you say the story is actually about you and your life at Castle Hill Station. Can you elaborate on that? When I came to Castle Hill the locals thought I would not do the hard yards, when the snow came I would head north. They took bets in the local pub. But the more they saw me everyday working on the farm they came to believe I was for real. I am now one of them. Farmers make the best of friends. When Phylys came to Castle Hill she too suffered prejudice. She worked hard

and by the end of the book she is part of the team. Why did you decide to buy Castle Hill Station in 2003? My husband John and my father died on the same day, February 12 2003. In life one has few people who love you unconditionally and to lose two of the best and most important people on one day leaves one bereft and very alone. I needed a reinvention that was significant and one that would engross me, take my energies, and give me a sense of a new beginning. In May 2004 I partnered the Department of Conservation in the purchase of Castle Hill Station. How long have you been writing for? I have always fancied myself as a good writer of letters and opinions, but my first real experience of what it is to be a writer came in 2006–2007 when I joined with Louise Callan in the writing of The Road to Castle Hill. Why do you write?  Christine Fernyhough with her own well-loved Phylys the farm truck at Castle Hill Station

THE RECORD OCTOBER 30 - 2013

Are your stories for a rural audience or do you think they have a wider appeal?

crave a rest, a cuppa or a Speights. They are a chance to catch up on stock prices, on local happenings, on the gossip. Tomorrow we start shearing the hoggets. Tea in enamel mugs, a roast for lunch, cakes and pastries galore. It is hard work drenching and foot rotting 650 near naked merinos!

Yes I do. I am concerned about the misconceptions urban people have about farmers and those who choose to live remotely. I try, through my books, to bridge the gap. Ben and Mark, Boys of the High Country continues to sell well and was one of the 100 books chosen to represent New Zealand at last year’s Frankfurt Book Fair. I took aspects of country life that are very different from the life of a young person living in a city.

Oh to play again

I believe and sales would show that my books have wide appeal. I received over 400 letters following the publication of The Road to Castle Hill. They came from all over the country, from people of all ages, from men and women.

Do you always write about country themes?

In March this year I started helping someone who loved golf but was restricted due to an old shoulder rotator cuff injury then more recently shoulder bursitis. Most rotator cuff injuries are tendonitis in the four muscles that attach to the shoulder. Bursitis is a slightly different problem that can also be restrictive and painful. A bursa is a fluid filled sac that allow for smooth joint function by reducing friction between joint tissues. An inflamed bursa will restrict movement and can become swollen and red. Because bursae are located adjacent to tendons it is possible to have both tendonitis and bursitis and for an avid golfer that is no fun at all. We started an anti-inflammatory programme that was initially very intensive. Our goal was to change the diet and introduce potent anti-inflammatory supplements to help reduce inflammation as rapidly as we could. He was quickly able to reduce anti-inflammatory drugs and after 2 months rated progress as 5/10. I spoke to him in October and he rated his progress at 9/10 and was now is back playing golf. Additionally he feels more energetic and just better in himself. There was nothing that was particularly brilliant in what we did. We just added nutrients that were able to dial back the amount of joint tissue inflammation thus allowing the shoulder the ability to heal. It saddens me that many people have this potential to heal but have accepted second best as normal. My view is that you never know unless you try. If a joint injury is holding you back, give me a call to help you to once again enjoy the things you love. My life, like others, is truly like a book — magical and inspiring, adventurous and dire, happy and demanding, ever changing. Books can take you anywhere. Like us, books need to live and they are only alive when they are being read. They have work to do. I have come to think that when you write a book and it is on a shelf in a shop, or a library, the person who reaches out to take your book is really shaking hands with you. You have written the book to share your life, your ideas. Come share my world.

How does chiropractic work? Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves control every aspect of your body; every cell, tissue, organ and system. Interfere with this vital communication highway, between your brain and your body, and ill health can result. A common source of interference comes from the movable bones that encase your spinal cord, called vertebrae. When these bones lose their normal function, they can irritate the nervous system. This disrupts the flow of the vital communication, altering the function of tissues or organs controlled by these

nerves, and ill health can result. This interference is called a vertebral subluxation. A subluxation can result in joint stiffness or movement problems, changes to muscle tightness, joint swelling and pain, nerve interference. It is the focus of chiropractic to locate these areas of interference and restore the integrity of your nervous system. Specific chiropractic adjustment help reduce these interferences, to restore your body’s ability to regulate and heal itself naturally.

Cup & Show Week New and old to feature in racing calendar highlight The country’s most vibrant and exciting spring festival, New Zealand Cup and Show Week, kicks off next Friday. In 2005 the Christchurch City Council created the umbrella brand to co-ordinate the growing number of national interest races and local icon events happening in Christchurch over this period. The amalgamation of these events into New Zealand Cup and Show Week Festival created the opportunity to promote the festival as a national event

that would bring significant economic benefits to Christchurch and reinforce local pride in the community. Over subsequent years the festival has grown significantly and is now established as the highlight of the New Zealand racing calendar and a social occasion that attracts more than 150,000 people. New to the 2013 festival is a Show Week

THE WINNING FORMULA

Street Party which will kick off the week’s entertainment. Christchurch’s Re:START mall will host the first-ever New Zealand Cup and Show Week Street Party, with live music, unique night markets, tasty food and plenty of retail therapy. Renowned New Zealand band OpShop will be headlining the exclusive free concert on the main stage, supported through the evening by top local performers Assembly Required, Von Voin Strum and Katie Thompson. And, of course, what would a Cup and Show Week event be without a fashion show. The Christchurch City Council has teamed up with a group of CPIT event management students to produce the entire evening, including an exclusive fashion feature that leaves the traditional

catwalk behind. Among all the fashion and frivolity of the week the traditional Canterbury A&P Association’s annual show is one of the week’s highlights and has been delighting locals and visitors of all ages every year since it began in 1863. Lured by the tastes of gourmet food and wines, stomach-turning rides, feature entertainment, and the sights, sounds of the farmyard, the Canterbury A&P Show has become an annual ritual for Cantabrians. This year’s show will feature close to 7,000 livestock and equestrian entries, 600 trade exhibitors, feature marquees and pavilions, as well as top entertainment and attractions. Over the three days of the show around 3,000 animals will compete in more than 1,700 classes for best in show titles and over $100,000 in prize money. For the farming community it is a chance to demonstrate the results of their hard labour — for city folk it is a chance to see at close quarters some of the best livestock and equestrian competitors this proud farming region has to offer. Whether you are looking for race or show action, or you just want to enjoy all that Christchurch and the Canterbury region has to offer, then New Zealand Cup and Show Week is a must do on your social calendar. 

THE RECORD OCTOBER 30 - 2013

Thrill-seeking missile launched There was a time, not so long ago, when 101 horsepower was considered somewhat excessive for a road-going car. Today, it's almost the norm for a proper performance vehicle to top the 'ton'. But for an offroad machine — and one which can offer thrills and steer clear of spills across some of the roughest terrain — 101 horsepower is still a little scary. That is, until you see how this power is deployed to the ground in the latest iteration of Can Am's successful Maverick, a machine which leads its class in power, but matches that grunt with some clever agility. Sure, that big 1000cc Rotax engine churns out a formidable mountain of torque, but it’s a combination of intelligent chassis layout, independent rear suspension, and partnership components from some big industry names which make this exciting off-roader really fly. The first stage of taming those 101 horses is control. Can Am teamed up with Bosch to create an intelligent throttle-by-wire system which irons out the bumps. Just nailed that big jump, but worried that a toe in the wrong place will send you revving into a ditch? Don't worry — the throttle control system detects unwanted bounces and bumps, smoothing the ride. A 'bulletproof' CVT transmission handles getting torque to the wheels where it's needed. Keeping those wheels planted is down to a combination of the Maverick's high frame rigidity and midengined layout (think about those mid-

engined supercars with stiff carbon frames), coupled with double arm front suspension and torsion trailing arm rear suspension, all set up with Fox shocks, a name with racing pedigree. Final drive is routed through 27 inch Maxxis tyres, and the anchors for this beast are a set of four 214mm vented disc brakes. The Maverick has over a foot of ground clearance, too. What this all adds up to is a machine which can put down maximum power across mud, sand, even rubble — delivering an off-road experience like no other. It may not have been designed with rural work in mind, but when it comes to having a good time, the Maverick delivers. The icing on this particular cake is the way it looks — a wickedly designed machine which promises a unique driving experience. 

THE RECORD

Hatching a bold new style Kia Motors have not been a company anyone could accuse of complacency lately. With design boss Peter Schreyer at the helm, the Korean automaker has enjoyed a renaissance over the past few years, with a clear vision of where they want to be and a stylistic direction which has made the brand instantly recognisable. Concepts such as the Soul and the Optima seem to have come direct from the motor shows of Detroit and Geneva without the watering-down of design aesthetics seen in other brands, and that trend continues with the latest iteration of the Cerato family. The Kia Cerato has always been the manufacturer’s middle-of-the-road car — a comfortable, reliable and safe family motor, pitched at a demographic who value fuel economy over flaring air intakes and turbo blow off valves. But this doesn’t mean that the Kia design team have failed to inject a little spark into the Cerato. After all, Mr Schreyer is the one who took the stolid, businesslike image of Audi and gave us the pop-icon TT. It’s clearly apparent in the lines of the brand new Cerato hatch — it’s a

sleek and low-profiled machine, with a steeply raked front screen and the kinds of razor-sharp swoops and creases in its metal which would suggest a touch of the redline. Kia’s recent cars have always been sat on impressive alloys too and the Cerato hatch is no different. A defining feature of the Cerato fourdoor is sheer attention to detail — puddle lamps, door handle illumination, keyless entry and start, steering wheel audio controls, colour, in-dash reversing camera — all migrate across to the hatch. In fact, the gentlemen on the lot had only one omission from the suite of gadgets to note; rain sensing wipers. Throw in subtle carbon fibre accents and real leather, and you begin to appreciate why Kia epitomises value for money. The Cerato hatch comes with a choice of engines, up to the willing 2-litre model also found in the sedan. Fuel economy still sits in the mid 7s, despite the fact that the hatch boasts a voluminous load space, complete with true fold-flat seats. And to drive? The

no slouch on the open highway either. Rumours abound of a turbocharged coupe version coming soon, which will be quite a departure, but for now, the Cerato has its sights set on the crown held for many years by that other family car beginning with ‘C’. 

Renovating for personal satisfaction or sale  Article supplied by Consumer Build, www.consumerbuild.org.nz

Renovating can be costly and inconvenient, but can also increase the value and enjoyment of your home. inexpensive makeover to freshen it up and make it more attractive to buyers. For example, repainting, repapering, or changing dated or damaged fixtures, such as a cracked basin in the bathroom. You need to consider the tastes of potential buyers, which really means keeping everything fairly neutral to appeal to a wider range of people. Not everyone warms to bright feature walls or pink bathtubs. Renovations that will increase the appeal of your home may include painting the kitchen and bathroom, or putting in some decking to give an indoor-outdoor flow and an increased sense of space or some landscaping. Don’t spend money that you won’t get back in the sale price. Ask a real estate agent for ideas to increase the house’s appeal, and how much you should spend without over capitalising. Beware of over capitalising If you don’t intend selling, the money you spend on renovating will be an investment in the comfort and enjoyment of the house. Whether you increase the value of the home may not be an important factor in how much you decide to spend. However, it is easy to get carried away with the excitement of doing up a home and over capitalise by spending money that can never be recouped if you do end up having to sell.

TIP BOX

You may regret the $60,000 kitchen you put into your $200,000 house should unexpected life changes occur, such as a marriage breakdown, or a business failure. It may be money you never get back if you have to sell and apportion

There are two main reasons people renovate, either to add to the comfort, use, and value of the home or to tidy it up to sell. Before you launch into renovations, take time to consider whether the expense and disruption is justified. Staying in the home If you intend staying in the home you may want to: • Add extra space to accommodate an expanding family, or simply to add a sense of spaciousness • Add rooms for special purposes, such as an office or games room • Change the configuration of the house for better flow, ease of use or orientation to sun and views • Update and remodel to give the house a fresher, more modern look — this could involve major changes such as taking out walls to enlarge a room, putting in a new kitchen, or installing new wallboards and ceilings. Or it could simply be a matter of painting or wallpapering • Restore the house to its original style (while adding modern features in some areas, like the kitchen and bathroom) • Add value to increase your investment Renovating to sell If you are renovating to sell, it is likely that you’ll want to give the house an
