Nurses’ Memorial Chapel reopens p It was built to honour ten New Zealand nurses whose deaths in the first world war “should never have happened.” It was threatened with demolition by district health boards in the 1970s and again in the 1980s. Then in February 2011, it was nearly destroyed by the earthquake. That earthquake could have been the death-knell for Christchurch Nurses’ Memorial Chapel. However, last week, after years of restoration, the world’s only chapel commemorating nurses killed in during the world wars, was officially reopened by the Governor-General the Right Honourable Dame Patsy Reddy, accompanied by Canon David Morrell (right) immediate past-president of the chapel trust. 143rd Annual Show
COURTENAY A&P Saturday 24th November Kirwee Showgrounds
p What would a farming fair be without the traditional sack race?
Front and centre for much of the fair was the commemoration of a local farmer and Selwyn MP, Sir John Hall, who in the years leading up to the 1893 signing of the Electoral Act worked tirelessly with suffragist leader, Kate Sheppard, to give women the right to vote. It was his final act before leaving parliament. The fair’s organising committee chair, Lucy Cookson, said it was great to be part of the suffrage celebrations. “It added a new twist to the fair and showcased our community,” she said. During the fair, well-known storyteller, Margaret Copland along with historians Colin Wilson and Kate Foster told Sir John Hall’s story. A special moment came with the reading of the speech he gave in parliament supporting the right to vote.
Sir John’s work was also honoured with a display and movie presented by the Homebush Historical Society. Lucy Goodson said the fair attracted a large crowd, and, like most farming community fairs, there was plenty to see and do. “The country auction is always a feature of the event. The addition of the Agri-Art where local blokes showed their number eight wire ingenuity in creating garden art was a highlight of the day,” she said. “It is a wonderful day for our community to come together and welcome others to enjoy a day in the country. “As always, it takes a big team to make these events happen, and thanks to all the committee, stallholders, performers and individuals who supported the event,” Lucy said. ¢

Meet Your Street is back in town and, as always, is backing the town as we head into summer. The Selwyn District Council initiative is aimed at bringing neighbours together and welcoming new arrivals to Rolleston. It is a series of street gatherings, funded by the council, that encourages neighbours to get to know each other. Activities include a free barbecue, music and fun activities for kids. This is the fourth year the council has ‘put it on’ for the community. The council’s community development adviser, Jason Flewellen, said Meet Your Street gives long-term residents and new arrivals a great opportunity to meet those living around them. “We have received great feedback since launching Meet Your Street, and know local communities look forward to it coming to their streets.” The council has selected 15 locations as host venues for Meet Your Street
gatherings and has left open four dates in March for a further four streets to be added, one from each ward. Applications on the council’s website are open now. The four additional streets will be announced in early December. The gatherings all take place Tuesdays from 5.30 pm and 7pm. The first is on Tuesday, November 6 at Austen Place Rolleston and the final one is on Tuesday, March 26 at a yet to be selected street in the Ellesmere Ward. The council is also encouraging the community to organise their own street parties in addition to the councilorganised events. Jason Flewellen said a $75 subsidy each event was up for grabs for successful applications. An application form is available on the council’s website selwyn.govt.nz. ¢

Nurses’ Memorial Chapel reopens u by Mike Isle
The only chapel in the world built to honour nurses killed during 20th-century wars was officially reopened in Christchurch last week by the Governor-General, the Right Honourable Dame Patsy Reddy.
p The 90-year-old and newly-restored Nurses’ Memorial Chapel located next to Christchurch Hospital
The 90-year-old chapel was severely damaged by the February 2011 earthquake. Its restoration and reopening followed what Christchurch City Council’s Heritage Programme manager, Richie Moyle, described as a challenging but rewarding job. “Old heritage buildings always throw up some surprises and the Nurses’ Memorial Chapel was no exception, but we are thrilled with the result,” he said. “The neo-Gothic arts and craft architecture, the beautiful stained-glass windows and the intricate oak carvings that make this building so unique have all been restored, and the building has been significantly strengthened so it should stand for many years to come.” Friends of the Chapel president, Pip Mason, described the chapel as “a very special place for Christchurch nurses, and they are delighted by the effort that has been put into restoring it.” The Nurses’ Memorial Chapel dates back to 1928 and was built to commemorate the loss of 10 New Zealand nurses who died when a British troopship, Marquette, was torpedoed by
a German submarine in the Aegean Sea in October 1915. Immediate past president of the chapel trust, Canon David Morrell, who once had an office in the chapel, said the chapel was built as a spontaneous response to the loss of life. A loss of life, he said, that should not have happened. “The nurses were placed on the Marquette, a troop ship carrying ammunition and therefore a legitimate target for the crack submarine unit patrolling the area. “By contrast, a hospital ship, which the nurses should have been on, travelled through the area unmolested on the same day.” Three of the nurses killed trained at Christchurch Hospital. The chapel also honours New Zealand nurses who died in the deadly influenza epidemic of 1918, and while serving in World War II. Dame Patsy Reddy said: “This chapel will serve as a reminder to future generations of the important role women played, not just in the first world war, but also in subsequent wars.” ¢

Selwyn a continuing success story “These factors are attracting families from around New Zealand and the world, along with businesses that are establishing or relocating in our townships and business zones. “We have been seeing an upward trend for a number of years. The council has worked hard to develop industrial land at Izone near Rolleston, and we have also been investing in facilities and services to support all of our communities.” Mayor Broughton says there has also been a significant number of international arrivals in Selwyn, with more than 300 becoming citizens over the last year. “We are becoming a multicultural community, and p Mayor Sam Broughton it is clear from events like CultureFest that our communities are Andy Thompson embracing our new arrivals.” ¢

Drug testing needed to reduce our road toll
Sister act u by Mike Isle
‘Sister’ similarities in China could lead to opportunities for local business, says council delegation.
u by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP
Unfortunately, road safety remains a significant issue that takes up a considerable amount of police attention in the Selwyn region. Our region has in recent years had an unacceptably high rate of crashes, particularly at intersections. Anything that we can do to reduce both our local and our national crash rate should be encouraged. One way of approaching the problem is to look at the reasons for fatal crashes and see what we can do to minimise or eliminate the risks. Last year, 79 fatal crashes involved a driver with drugs in their system, compared with 70 involving an intoxicated driver. These figures come from testing that is done by authorities following a fatal crash and show that we need to get more proactive in preventing people from driving while under the influence of drugs. Currently, under the Land Transport Act, drug driving is measured by an impairment test that involves an eye assessment and requesting a driver walk heel to toe in a straight line. The current method has some obvious limitations.
Advances in drug testing technology over recent years including saliva and sweat tests have made roadside testing for drugs much more practical. Based on this, my colleague Wairarapa MP Alastair Scott submitted a members’ bill, which would have allowed police officers to perform roadside drug testing on any driver who they suspected was driving under the influence of drugs. Disappointingly all three parties in the coalition government voted against this members’ bill, despite police minister Stuart Nash previously acknowledging the need to roll out new technology to combat the danger posed by drugged drivers. The voting down of a members’ bill which would have kept our roads safer and saved lives is incomprehensible. If the government saw some way to improve the bill the least they could have done was to send it to select committee for consideration and feedback.
p Gansu Province — relationship with Selwyn extends back to Rewi Alley
The four-person delegation has just returned from a 20-day trip to China and Japan, as part of the Sister City Programme, which aims to promote cultural understanding, cooperation and economic development. Mayor Sam Broughton, who led the delegation, said that while in China’s Gansu Province the delegation saw a number of industries Selwyn businesses could identify with and potentially form relationships with. “What we saw in Gansu Province was an area that farmed grain and lamb, as well as producing wine. “It was fascinating to see so many parallels between some of our key export earners and what one of our sister cities produces,” he said.
Mayor Broughton undertook to investigate how to take advantage of the similarities, saying that he and the council will be looking at ways local businesses can develop relationships with firms in Gansu. Selwyn’s relationship with Gansu stems from a common association through New Zealander Rewi Alley, who was born in Selwyn in 1897. Alley, through his literary writings on Chinese industry and communist philosophy, became an icon in the Shandan County, Gansu Province, China where he lived for 60 years. As well as Gansu, which is located in north-central China, Selwyn has Sister City status with population centres in Japan and the United States. ¢

Youth to have their say

Lincoln University’s Bert Sutcliffe Oval turned out to be the perfect pitch to host the first round of the Burger King Super Smash Women’s T20 cricket series.
The Selwyn Youth Council is reaching out to the district’s youth and inviting them to have their say about living in Selwyn.
p Bert Sutcliffe Oval—scene of a thrilling round win for the local team
The fast and furious format of the T20 delivered some scintillating matches helped by an oval, which has consistently been a venue for big scores at first-class level. Even better for local cricket supporters, the Canterbury Magicians got away to a perfect series start, racing to the top of the ladder after dropping only one game in the opening round. Magician’s coach Ben Rapson said his team was delighted with the win. “It was great to have a win in front of a home crowd. There was a big buzz around the ground, which was awesome, and it was great to see the locals turn up to support the team,” he said. Twelve teams competed in the tournament, but there was no doubt
the crowd favourite was the Magicians who ground-out some hard-fought wins to lead by a point differential at the end of the four-day round. If the Magicians were the stars of the show, they would have to share that stardom with the Bert Sutcliffe Oval, which is fast becoming a home ground for the Magicians and women’s cricket in general. The oval, named after the legendary New Zealand opening batsman Bert Sutcliffe, who was stationed for a time just up the road at Burnham Military Camp before serving overseas during World War II, has hosted Women’s World Cup semi-finals and finals. It is now firmly on the map as one of New Zealand’s leading cricket venues. ¢

Nine of Canterbury’s 10 water zone committees (the Waimakariri committee will look for new members next year) are going through their annual refresh to find new members with fresh ideas on how to address local water challenges. Selwyn Waihora water zone committee member, Megan Hands, who joined the committee last year, says she has always had an interest in making a difference in her community. “I guess that’s the way I was brought up — that the community is you and if you don’t get stuck in and do things, things don’t happen. “We’ve got this big challenge in the water quality space and in order to solve the challenges that we have, we all need to get involved and actively participate in finding solutions together. “Experience is important on the committee, but having fresh eyes is really important too — to contribute different ideas to the discussion and different ways of doing things,” Hands says. The zone committee takes a cooperative, collaborative approach to water management, and it’s very enjoyable and exciting to be part of. I’d encourage local people to get involved and play their part.” The 10 water zone committees in Canterbury are made up of community members. Selwyn schools have been put on notice that they may be targeted by an email scam.
Police are investigating the scam, which targets school administration staff who are emailed by a person purporting to be the school’s principal asking them to purchase App Store or iTunes gift cards. Recipients are told to provide the gift card numbers to the sender by email. Several schools in Christchurch have received the emails and police have issued a warning for other schools in Canterbury.
They say that scams of this nature can be sophisticated, appear realistic and can often create a sense of urgency. They advise schools to report any suspicious emails or phone calls to Christchurch police on 03 363 7400. Selwyn schools contacted by The Record say that they have not yet been hit by the scam, but are aware of it, and staff have been warned to be on the lookout for it. ¢

Santas stampede for a good cause u by Andy Bryenton
There are few sights more festive than the jolly old visage of Father Christmas — but how about a horde of rosy-cheeked, redsuited Santas running through the streets?
That’s the sight which will greet visitors to Hagley Park in Christchurch this December 5, as a veritable stampede of festive doppelgangers beat the feet for a good cause. Santa’s helpers are often found in shopping malls or rattling a charity bucket on street corners, but for this, even the bearded, pom-pom-hatted Kris Kringles will tackle a two to threekilometre running course, sponsored by their mates. All the money raised is going to the Graeme Dingle Foundation, a charitable organisation dedicated to helping young Kiwis build self-confidence and skills
for a better life. Each adult runner who signs up to participate will receive their very own Santa costume, though other Christmas characters have been seen in previous years, with homemade gingerbread men, snowmen, elves, reindeer and Christmas fairies all making the run. For those keen to take part in a bighearted event to help kids this festive season, you couldn’t wish for better. Visit santarun.co.nz to get involved, and be ready at Hagley Park from 5pm on December 5 — but start planning now if you want to make a big splash with you and your mates in holiday attire! ¢

Council’s rubbish video u by Mike Isle
Where does our rubbish go, what is recyclable and what can we do to ease the pressure on those who look after our solid waste?
Well, the Selwyn District Council has found a way to tell us—or, more accurately, show us. The council and 12 other councils across the country have produced a web series of videos called Wasted New Zealand, highlighting the trouble with trash and where our waste goes. Selwyn District Council Solid Waste Manager Andrew Boyd says often there’s a “feel good” sentiment about recycling, but sometimes our separating needs a little more thought. “It was great to see this series highlighting some major frustrations of ours, such as bagged recyclables — these are unable to be sorted and are sent to landfill,” he said. Mr Boyd believes there is often confusion
around takeaway food and drink containers. “While most containers are made out of plastic or cardboard, they aren’t necessarily recyclable in the kerbside service. Takeaway coffee cups, for example, should go into the rubbish, and this also applies to compostable or biodegradable coffee cups — these are not currently acceptable in the organics bin either.” Andrew says tin, plastic and glass containers need to be empty and clean, with the lids off, if the container is to be recycled. The Wasted New Zealand series is available on the Selwyn District Council website. ¢

Decade by decade the show has grown, and this year the change of name over the big marquee coincides with the biggest schedule of events, competitions and surprises ever. Just running the numbers shows a list of superlatives — 2017 saw in excess of 100,000 visitors pass through the gates, taking in exhibits and stalls set up by more than 550 businesses and groups. and still sits at the heart of what the New Zealand Agricultural Show is all about. That’s pride in progress, and a focus on the future of farming. You’ll see it in the cutting edge machinery on display, offering new ways for farmers to be ever more productive and sustainable. You’ll be able to sit in on thoughtprovoking seminars at the Blinc Innovation Hub, where topics crucial to the future of the primary industries will be laid out by true experts in their fields. Moreover, you’ll see it in the way that the show and its exhibitors are reaching out to a new generation through school engagement and close ties with tertiary programs. This show has always been a place where futures are decided, from innovations brought to the public eye through to careers established. This year will be no exception.

NEW ZEALAND AGRICULTURAL SHOW 2018 ADVERTORIAL
Driving off-road power further As the town and country come together for the massive annual Canterbury A&P Show — this year renamed the NZ Agricultural Show — a very special corner of the showgrounds will be given over to the celebration of sheer off-road power and toughness. For 4x4 fans, this is the place to be on show weekend. Ironman 4x4 products will be on display at the Canterbury A&P Show November 14–16 at site E64. These products have been developed in the harshest proving ground in the world — Australia — a continent which spans harsh deserts to thick bush to humid swamps. Available to 4WD users for over 50 years and sold in more than 120 countries, Ironman 4x4 delivers the comfort and safety serious drivers demand, as well as quality and value for money. With one of the largest ranges of suspension components in the world and top of the line accessories, you’ll find the gear and the friendly advice you need to help get your vehicle off the beaten track. Ironman’s team (with more than 50 years of combined experience) will be at the show to answer all your vehicle fit-out needs. This year we will have some of the latest vehicles on display fully fitted out with the Ironman 4x4 range of
accessories. Come and see what your 4WD could look like after you’ve let the team at Ironman 4x4 dress up your truck! We’re packing a massive range of bullbars to weather the hard knocks, winches with the grunt to pull even the biggest machines loose of trouble, powerful lighting to turn night into day, and recovery equipment to avert offroad disasters. Of course, Ironman will bring to the show a range of suspension options that are second to none, along with two-way radios, roof racks, camping equipment — all you need to transform a factory machine into an unstoppable off-road ‘monster’. Alongside the huge catalogue of parts and upgrades carefully assembled by Ironman 4x4’s experts, you’ll also find plenty of top advice. If you have plans to

get out there and enjoy the wilderness, then come and have a friendly chat with our crew on show weekend. No matter how radical your scheme, no matter what vehicle you want to use as your starting point, and no matter how gnarly the challenge, it’s likely that the Ironman crew have helped out with something similar before. Let them point you in the right direction before you head for the edges of the map!

The farmer is understood to have been working with Scottish Highland cattle in a pen when he was attacked by one of the bulls. The man died at the scene. A spokesperson for WorkSafe New Zealand, which is investigating the incident, says special care is needed when working around cattle. “While incidents such as this are fortunately very rare, each year many people are injured by cattle. Most injuries are when cattle kick or crush them. Many of the injuries, such as broken bones, can be quite serious.” The frequency and seriousness of such injuries have prompted WorkSafe to issue a guide to the safe handling of cattle. The guide says that farmers are most likely to be injured when: • They don’t have the experience to assess the risks. • They don’t have the agility or ability to get out of the way. • With bulls. • With recently calved cows. • With bad-tempered or irritable cattle.

SCORCH COMMUNICATIONS

Scorch Broadband Canterbury rural area prevention manager, Senior Sergeant Matt Emery, says police are encouraging rural property owners to make security a priority, as the weather gets warmer and the days get longer. “A lot of reported thefts are committed by opportunist criminals looking for that unsecured shed or a farm vehicle with the keys in the ignition,” he said. Many of the measures propertyowners can take, such as locking doors and windows and installing sensor lights, are common sense and apply to both urban and rural properties. However, Sergeant Emery said, in a rural setting a few extra measures are required to help keep buildings,
vehicles, machinery and stock safe. He recommends: • Checking boundaries and fences on a regular basis • Clearly tagging animals • Removing keys from unattended vehicles • Marking or engraving tools with the owner’s driving licence number • Not leaving firearms in vehicles • Keeping in contact with neighbours and letting one another know of unusual behaviour Sergeant Emery says police take burglary and theft incidents seriously. He advises property owners to contact them immediately if they see anything suspicious. ¢
