Thirty million years ago, the area we now call Canterbury was part of a shallow inland sea …

The Te Ara Kakariki Greenway Canterbury Trust (TAK) is an incorporated charitable trust with the mission to undertake environmental restoration projects in Selwyn. The latest planting day at sites around Hororata and Springfield was one of their most ambitious yet with the goal of planting 5,000 native trees with up to 150 volunteers — something the trust had never done before. TAK coordinator, Letitia Lum, said one week before the planting day there were just 80 volunteers signed up. “Phone calls, flyers at markets and social media brought the registrations over the line to 125 very willing and capable people who were ready to give a whole day to planting native trees for the Canterbury plains,” Ms Lum said. A number of the planting sites had been planted by the landowners or volunteer in past years, so the ecologists were able to point out the growth of existing vegetation. The sites ranged from dryland to wetland. “There were a couple of budding ecology students from Lincoln University, who were picked up at the early hours of the morning to assist ecologists with laying plants,” Ms Lum said. “These experiences are as good as taking on internships, so fortunately for the trust, the students keep coming back each year to assist with one of the most important jobs of the day. “The ecologists’ race to keep up with the crowd of planters from one site to the next. They need to have a deep

knowledge of which species can handle various soil types, or lots of moisture by their roots, or windy areas, or more sun. “The volunteers also get a feel for what species go where over the course of the day and could ask questions about the trees.” The Canterbury plantout days even attract families with toddlers. Sue and Karl Thompson planted at Pam Aldersley’s site in Springfield. They drove from Christchurch with their 10-month-old daughter Olive to be among like-minded people and spend a day in nature. Sue said when their first daughter was born they stopped coming

to volunteer plantouts and now with their second child, they were determined to keep coming and get her involved from an early age. “Today I’ve really enjoyed seeing the plantings from the past few years alongside today’s new seedlings; it’s such a beautiful spot planting so close to the snowy mountains”. Te Ara Kakariki seeks out willing landowners every year, as well as public lands for planting native greendots, which are stepping stones for birds across the plains. The trust will be gathering applications again in October this year. 

Young gardener One tonne of weeds out the competition batteries recycled  by Kent Caddick

 by Kent Caddick

Darfield youngster, Rubie Leech, has won the West Coast and Canterbury Budding Young Gardener title as part of the inaugural Yates Budding Young Gardener competition.

In what is thought to be the first recycling project of its kind in New Zealand — a Selwyn environmental group has marked collecting more than one tonne of batteries for recycling.

The eight-year-old caught the judges’ attention with her great enthusiasm and humour displayed in her video entry. Rubie started gardening from a young age, with the help of mum, Kylie and has developed an unusual liking for broccoli. “I love growing broccoli because it is my most favourite food in the world. I have it every night for dinner,” Rubie said. “Potatoes are also fun to grow because it’s like going on a treasure hunt when you dig them up. You just never know how many you will get and how big they will be.” Rubie also sees gardening as special time spent with her family. “While I’m not particularly fond of weeding it does give us lots of time to talk. The best part of all is watching all the plants grow  Darfield’s Rubie Leech is a bit of a broccoli head when it comes to gardening and then getting to eat them all, particularly strawberries.” Fiona Arthur from Yates said the Rubie has won a huge Yates hamper Budding Young Gardener competition worth more than $300 and is lining up aims to celebrate a love of gardening alongside seven other regional winners and encourage children of all levels for the grand prize of a trip to Australia, of capability to further develop becoming a Yates Ambassador for a their passion. year and spending time in her garden “There have been so many excellent with a Yates horticulturist. entries this year it put our judges, Ruud The grand winner is decided by public Kleinpaste and Sarah O’Neil under vote, and Rubie is hoping all of West pressure to just pick one regional winner. In April 2017, the Lincoln Envirotown Trust (LET) delivered 40kg of batteries to Ecotech Services in Christchurch for them to undergo a recycling process instead of going to landfill. The batteries are deposited by members of the public into the recycling container provided at Lincoln New World, and in early September of this year, the 1000th kilogram was delivered. LET chair, Dave Fitzjohn, said as they and Lincoln New World started the project, there was simply no way of knowing how people would react and what sort of response there would be.

WOF ONLY

“It was envisaged that there may be an early influx of batteries as people cleared out those they had stored without any clear sustainable way of disposing of them but that after that there would be a drop-off,” Mr Fitzjohn said. “In fact, the opposite has happened with the numbers of batteries deposited growing in most months. Some months have seen more than 100kg deposited.” He said the Lincoln Envirotown Trust would like to congratulate and thank the public for their continued and growing support of this project. 

Selwyn not suffering from rental shortage

It’s all downhill

 by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

Rents in New Zealand hit a record high in August, with the country’s median weekly rent for the month up 6.7 per cent on a year ago. Here in Selwyn, the median rent during the period from March 1 2018 to August 31 2018, was $420.

 West Melton School sent two teams to compete in the annual Local Schools Derby skiing competition at the Porters Ski Area recently. Pictured from left are: Ryder, Nash, Josie, Buz, Tessa, Olive and William. Weather conditions for the day’s event were perfect, and the intermediate team came home in third place, which was a top result given it was the first time they had competed at the event. The three fastest times were added together to give the team score. The intermediate team recorded a combined time of 231.72 seconds for its third placing while Nash finished fourth fastest in the individual overall category with a time of 70.82 seconds. “We would like to thank Matt Allin, our team manager, and Pip Roycroft and Deb Floyd for their encouragement and help on the day,” West Melton School’s promotions officer, Rita Spadoni said. A IN &

SEED DRESSI

Thanks to our construction boom of recent years, our region is fortunate in not suffering from a shortage of rental properties. However, this is not the case in other parts of New Zealand including Wellington, Auckland and the Hawkes Bay. Unfortunately, government policies such as the extension of the bright-line test for residential property, proposed changes to the rules allowing owners of rental properties to offset losses against other income, and the prospect of a capital gains tax on rental properties are all acting to deter Mum and Dad investors from purchasing residential properties as an investment. That is not good news for renters as it means less properties available to rent, and if there are fewer rentals available rents tend to go up.

Wai: We care "We’ve got a big challenge in the water quality space, and in order to address these, we all need to get involved and actively participate in finding solutions together."

Some of the government’s proposed rental reforms are swinging the pendulum too far against landlords and will only serve to further reduce the number of people wanting to invest in residential property. For example, currently, landlords are required to give tenants 42 days’ notice if they decide to sell their rental property. Most people would consider six weeks ample time to find alternative accommodation — but the government has proposed increasing the required notice period to 90 days. Given that tenants are able to move on and only need to give their landlord 21 days’ notice, 90 days seems excessive. In many cases landlords will not be selling their rental properties on a whim but due to a change in their financial or other circumstances. 

Winegrowers Research Centre appointment  by Mike Isle

The NZ Winegrowers Research Centre (NZWRC) has appointed a Lincoln University professor as its acting head of science. He is Professor Brian Jordan, who is Lincoln University’s professor of plant biotechnology, and has more than 30 years of experience in plant biochemistry and molecular biology. NZWRC chief executive, MF Loza, said the NZWRC was delighted to have Professor Jordan on board for what he described as a key time for the centre. “We are setting up the research centre for the future. Professor Jordan’s immense experience and technical expertise, and his networks across New Zealand and international research communities will be invaluable as we define our research programme, plan to build science capability and put in place processes for delivering science excellence,” Mr Loza said. Dr Roland Harrison, head of wine, food and molecular biosciences at Lincoln also welcomed the appointment of Professor Jordan. “Brian has been and still is an excellent advocate for the application of science to improve our productive systems. His science management vision will make an important contribution to the development of this new research centre.”

A garden of delights  by Andy Bryenton

Awarded research grants  by Mike Isle

With spring in the air, what could be a better day out than an oldfashioned English-style country fete, set in the grand gardens of a stately manor?

 Nothing beats the colour and beauty of an old-fashioned garden fete — and Selwyn has a worldclass example of its very own this October

The answer, of course, is a fete with a bit of Kiwi flair — the very definition of Selwyn’s Spring Fling held at the amazing Broadfield Gardens. Laid out in the image of the beautiful formal gardens of Europe, but with a distinctively New Zealand quirkiness to make them unique, Broadfield Gardens cover a sprawling 3.5 hectares and have been established for more than a quarter of a century. The great landscape designers of the Regency and the Victorian era consider 25 years to be the perfect ‘ripening’ time for a grand garden, and spring sees all the wonderful plants in their finery.

Even on a normal day, there are eighteen different sections to explore in this registered ‘Garden of International Significance’. On October 7 the entire venue will come alive with the colours, sounds and culinary aromas of a proper spring fete from 11am. Along with guided tours of the gardens, visitors will be able to sample some delicious cookery, talk to artisans and craftspeople, browse an eclectic range of stalls under colourful canvas, and listen to some live music among the flowers. This event is the very definition of a family day out. 

Lincoln Agritech has been awarded two major research grants in this year’s highly contested Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) funding round. The grants total $11 million. One research programme aims to help manage freshwater pollution, and the other to assist medical professionals to diagnose bone and tissue damage using hand-held noncontact technology. Lincoln scientists, Drs Roland Stenger and Blair Miller and their research team, have been awarded $7.8 million for their programme to help upgrade freshwater management. “To better manage freshwater pollution, we need to find out more about how nitrogen travels from land to waterways. We have to understand how quickly nitrogen travels and how much of it is naturally removed as it moves through the soil into a surface waterway,” Dr Miller said. “The programme will deliver methods and tools for characterising and quantifying transfer pathways at sub-catchment level to establishing the link between land use and its effects on freshwater quality.” Dr Miller said the programme aims to help farmers, iwi, industry

and councils achieve communitymandated water quality goals. The second Lincoln Agritech research to receive a grant is a $6 million programme to develop a handheld medical scanner that provides highresolution images of bone and tissue. The programme is led by Professor Ian Woodhead and Dr Ian Platt. Professor Woodhead said the scanner’s simplicity, costeffectiveness and portability will differentiate it from currently available imaging equipment and could be used in ambulances and medical facilities. Royal NZ College of General Practitioners chair, Dr Keri Ratima, said: “[The scanner] is expected to provide real value to rural communities, including Maori, and others struggling to access services.” Lincoln Agritech chief executive, Peter Barrowclough, expressed delight at the grants and paid tribute to what he described as a highly talented team of Agritech scientists and research engineers. 

Canterbury homeowners can now get a rates advance of up to $6,000 to pay for home heating, insulation and ventilation improvements.

Thirty million years ago, the area we now call Canterbury was part of a shallow inland sea, inhabited by a wide array of curious prehistoric marine life.

 Castle Hill, Kura Tawhiti, is a natural wonder, which harbours unique flora and offers incredible views

Environment Canterbury announced the advance as part of its Long Term Plan 2018–28. Deputy chair, Peter Scott, said eligible ratepayers can apply for the advance and pay it back through their rates bill over nine years with interest. “We are delighted to be able to offer this option and help Cantabrians make their homes warmer, drier and healthier. One of our roles as a regional council is to ensure that the air we breathe supports health and wellbeing, so helping people upgrade to better heating technology is vital

to that,” said Mr Scott. The advance carries an interest rate fixed at 5.9% per annum for applications received before July 2019. Mr Scott said the interest rate covers all costs incurred by Environment Canterbury to run the scheme so that it does not impact other ratepayers. Applications for the advance are now being accepted on Environment Canterbury’s website: ecan.govt.nz. Successful applicants must use approved installers. A list of those, several of whom operate in Selwyn, is on the website. 

Over centuries, the seabed drained away, leaving magnificent upthrusts of limestone rock to be eroded by the forces of nature. This October presents locals and visitors alike with a special opportunity to explore this amazing landscape with its weathered turrets of stone. On Tuesday, October 9 the Department of Conservation will guide a group for a walking tour of this unique corner of New Zealand, exploring not only the limestone monoliths, which so impressed early European settlers, but also the distinct flora and fauna of the area. There is something of interest for everyone. All the old favourites return.” With a tradition stretching back to 1869, those favourites are timehonoured indeed. This year will be the 148th time the show has brought all the fun of the countryside to town, pitching its bright marquees just outside the township of Leeston for a spring celebration. Formerly known as the Terrace Wine Bar, the business was taken over earlier this year by locals, Ray and Debbie O’Connell. They have taken six months to revamp and rename the iconic wine bar into a vibrant, fresh seafood and quality certified beef and venison establishment. Lifestyle ‘n’ Farming ADVERTORIAL

Our vital water resource

SCORCH

While local government regulators tighten their land use rules to help meet the water quality requirements of the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management and community goals, scientists are looking for ways to improve nutrient management and reduce adverse farming impacts on water quality. Environment Canterbury last month announced it is a step closer to implementing Plan Change 5 to the Land and Water Regional Plan, aimed at managing the diffuse loss of nutrients from farming activities. The change deals with the effects of land use, particularly farming activities, on water quality at a region-wide level, and aims to ensure the effective management of water quality in the Waitaki subregion. Meanwhile, four Canterbury dairy farms, along with two arable, two mixed livestock and one mixed arable and dairy farm, are involved in a project to put scientific findings to the test on a commercial scale. The six-year Forages for Reduced Nitrate Leaching research programme, scheduled to finish next year, aims to reduce nitrate leaching losses by 20 per cent by delivering proven, adoptable and profitable pasture and forage crop options. The use of the forage herb plantain in pasture is among the promising results. One of many projects focussed on improving water quality, it is a DairyNZ-led collaborative research programme, which also involves AgResearch, Plant and Food Research, Lincoln University, the Foundation for Arable Research and Landcare Research. Regulators, scientists, industry leaders and farmers will be among the presenters at a New Zealand Institute of Agricultural & Horticultural Science (NZIAHS) forum, Water in Canterbury – our vital resource, at Lincoln University on Wednesday, October 24 2018. Speakers include: Tom Lambie, Ecan; Prof Sir Tipene O’Reagan, Ngai Tahu Research Centre; Prof Richard McDowell, Lincoln University; Dr Stefanie Rixecker, Ecan; John Bright, Aqualinc Research; Bob Bower, Wallbridge

Lincoln Agritech to look at freshwater pollution  by Rebecca Doyle

Lincoln Agritech scientists have been awarded almost $8 million in funding to look into ways to better manage freshwater pollution. The funds for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment programme were made available through the Endeavour Investment Fund. Drs Roland Stenger and Blair Miller, along with their environmental research team, are leading a $7.8m programme to upgrade freshwater management. They will deliver methods and tools for characterising and quantifying transfer pathways at a sub-catchment level. By defensibly establishing the link between land use and its effects on freshwater quality at the sub-catchment scale, they will enable more effective and spatially targeted land use and management, mitigations and policy. “To better manage freshwater pollution, we need to find out more about how nitrogen travels from land to waterways at a sub-catchment level,” Dr Miller said. “We have to understand how quickly nitrogen travels and how much of it is naturally removed by microorganisms

as it moves from the soil through the groundwater into a surface waterway. “Only catchment scale resolution is possible at the moment, but it’s at the subcatchment scale that the best management and mitigation options are available to prevent nitrogen from getting into our waterways. “We’ll also be looking at matching land use to existing natural removal capacity or installing mitigations where they have the greatest effect.” Understanding nitrogen pathways is a high priority for Federated Farmers, and the organisation has endorsed the programme. A call has gone out for Selwyn’s best duck callers to get their entries in for this year’s New Zealand Duck and Goose Calling Championships. The country’s aspiring duck and goose callers are preparing to out-cackle and ruffle each other’s feathers in the New Zealand Duck and Goose Calling Championships later this month. For the third year running, the event is being held as part of the Sika outdoor trade show in Taupo September 29– 30th. Duck calling competition organiser, Adam Rayner, says he’s delighted by the way the calling champs have grabbed the attention of both hunters and onlookers alike at the show. “Last year was the biggest response so far with hundreds intently watching and listening to competitors,” he said. “For contestants, who are very serious about their duck and goose calling, this is the high point of their year with a win carrying lots of prestige.” The contestants will compete in five categories: open live duck; open team duck; open live goose and open team goose. Past winners have gone on to compete in the world champs held as part of the Waterfowl Festival in the USA. 
