Originally only held in Lincoln, last year the CultureFest became a district wide event and was held in Rolleston to coincide with the town’s 150th anniversary, with the two towns agreeing to host the event in alternative years. The 2017 event, which is organised by Selwyn District Council in partnership with Rotary Club of Lincoln and the Christchurch Multicultural Council, was held in the Lincoln Domain. Council’s senior events and recreation advisor Dave Tippett said CultureFest 2017 was an outstanding success following the inaugural 2016

event. “Around 3,000 people enjoyed 23 performances from 20 different ethnic and cultural backgrounds,” Mr Tippett said. “The turnout from Selwyn people, performers, ethnic and cultural groups and food vendors really showcased Selwyn’s growing diversity and welcoming community for newcomers and migrants. “The 15 food vendors each represented a different country and had people fully immersing themselves in the day’s festivities.” There were plenty of craft, games and activities including Iranian handcrafts,

Selwyn’s Mayor Sam Broughton and Ngai Tahu’s Sally Pitama officially opened the event after a speeches from members of the Rotary Club of Lincoln and Christchurch Multicultural Council. ¢

Fish & Game communications manager Don Rood says the timing of the fishing season opening with the start of the school holidays is great for families. “The start of the new season always provides the opportunity for families and mates to get together. “It is a great opportunity to get the children into the outdoors and introducing them to the joys of fishing. “With any luck, they will catch their first trout and head home with some fresh wild food for the barbecue or smoker.” Don Rood says families have

been catered for with a special licence. “Fish & Game has made it easier to take the family fishing with the family licence, which allows parents and their children to fish together. It also allows grandparents to take their grandchildren fishing. “As well, children can get a free fishing licence, while teenagers up to the age of 18 can get a licence for the whole season for $27 — much cheaper than the adult licence.” Licences are available at sporting stores or online through the Fish & Game website www. fishandgame.org.nz. ¢

Clan Hororata is a group of dedicated volunteers who work to stage one of the biggest Scottish Festivals in the Southern Hemisphere, this year being held on Saturday, November 11, at the Hororata Domain. Games committee member John Ballagh said being part of Clan Hororata was heaps of fun and very rewarding. “It brings challenges, but at the end of the day to see so many happy people who have come and enjoyed our event gives everyone in Clan Hororata a sense of pride,” Mr Ballagh said. “Our community gets a whole heap bigger around the games with volunteers coming from within the Selwyn district, wider Canterbury, as far north as Auckland, and

south to Dunedin to join the Clan. “We even have some folk in Scotland who consider themselves part of our Clan.” Not only are 200 volunteers needed on event day, it takes a big team to transform the Hororata Domain into the Hororata Highland Games and then to pack up again on Sunday. Anyone who pre-registers to be part of Clan Hororata, whether it be helping with the set up, pack down or on the day, receives free admittance to the event plus an invitation to the Prime Smoke ‘Clan Hororata’ Thank You BBQ immediately after the games. Anyone interested in becoming part of Clan Hororata can register by emailing games@hororata. org.nz or connect through Facebook. ¢

The multi-purpose community and recreation facility replaces the old community hall which sustained damage in the 2010 earthquake. Construction of the new facility is expected to be complete late next year. West Melton Community and Recreation Centre Committee chair Bruce Russell said the blessing was an opportunity to celebrate the hard work that has been done to date. “The community itself raised $120,000 towards the new facility. I’m really proud of the way West Melton residents got behind everything and helped this four-year project come to fruition,” Mr Russell said. Photo supplied by SDC

Political engagement high

Question time

u by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

I have been involved in a few election campaigns now and I have been particularly pleased to see the level of political engagement amongst people in our community and communities across New Zealand during the past few months of this campaign. With special votes yet to be counted, voter turnout across the country looks to be up on last election and I believe this may also be the case here in Selwyn. I certainly have had a lot of people contacting me seeking information on specific policies that were of particular importance to them and I welcomed the opportunity to assist them in making an informed decision. It is my view that in order to get the best outcome for democracy it is essential to have a robust debate of various policies and ideas and their merits and drawbacks. For this reason I would like to thank those organisations which hosted ‘Meet the Candidates’ meetings in various locations in the Selwyn electorate to give local people the opportunity to

come along to meet and ask questions of all the candidates. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of my fellow candidates and wish them all the best for the future. Of course candidates do not campaign alone and I would like to thank my family, friends and local campaign team of volunteers for their support over the past few weeks, putting up signs, delivering leaflets and accompanying me while out doorknocking in various parts of Selwyn. Finally I would like to thank you, the people of Selwyn, for entrusting me with the role of representing you in Parliament once again. Once the structure of the next Government and the 52nd Parliament is finalised, I am looking forward to continuing to work hard on your behalf. ¢

Rolleston’s new ambulance station has been officially opened but fundraising for the facility will continue. The new station, with garaging for three vehicles and accompanying administration and training facilities was officially opened on Sunday, with St John chancellor Dr Steven Evans cutting the ribbon and unveiling a plaque to commemorate the occasion. The $650,000 facility has taken three years to complete and has been built due to the fund raising efforts of the St John Selwyn Central Area committee. Committee chair John Sunckell thanked all those who contributed to making the facility a reality. “Of special significance are the contributions of the Selwyn District Council, Generation Homes for their ‘no charge’ project management, Rata Foundation for its early financial support and Pub Charity for providing the cornerstones for the project. This

early support allowed the community to come in behind us and to make at times significant donations. “The job is not yet done, with loans of $150,000 to repay and ongoing operational levies and costs approaching $300,000 a year we will need the continued support of our community.” Mr Sunckell said the new station is not just a base for ambulances and staff but also provides meeting and training rooms. “Our St John youth programme is very strong in Rolleston with approximately 50 ‘penguins’ and cadets regularly attending, learning community and life skills and as they get older first aid and leadership.” St John also took delivery of a new state of the art ambulance which Mr Sunckell said will increase their ability to respond to emergencies. ¢

Treat for arty botanists Veteran angler approaches milestone

u by Kent Caddick

Local residents, art lovers and amateur botanists are in for a treat over the coming weeks with the opening of a new exhibition at the Selwyn Gallery in Darfield. Paintings and drawings of native plants from around the district will be on display and the until October 25. The art works were created by members of the Botanical Art Society of New Zealand from 2010 to 2013, and were created to help celebrate the 150th birthday of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Malvern Community Arts Council chair Philip Baldwin said this exhibit is part of a larger body of work called the ‘Canterbury Plains Florilegium’, an illustrated record of indigenous plants. “In modern terms the word florilegium means a collection of botanically correct illustrations of plants, in this case from Riccarton Bush and the Canterbury Plains. “Part of our interest in this exhibit is that botanical art can act as the interface between art and science,” Mr Baldwin said. “It gives viewers an aesthetic experience and also educates them about the botanical subjects on display.”

Lifestyles ‘n’ Farming

Small stature, big results u by Andy Bryenton

Even the smallest lifestyle block demands something more than just a traditional lawn mower, which is why so many owners of the classic ‘few acres in the country’ opt for a powerful ride-on to tame the grass. But there are other chores which abound on the land, especially if you’re taking the plunge into running a small amount of stock, or if your land is more wild and rugged than you’d like. That’s when the allure of joining the big boys and buying a real farm tractor becomes appealing. But many lifestyle block owners will freely admit that such an investment is a bit beyond what’s truly necessary. A big tractor can be a daunting machine to learn to drive especially if you’re coming to the ‘hot seat’ later in life. Now, however, there’s a happy medium which may just tick all the boxes. The smallest tractor in New Zealand is also, paradoxically, the beefiest lawn tractor, and it comes in any colour you like so long as it’s orange. Kioti’s CS2210 is called a ‘sub compact’, and that’s because it weighs in smaller than some big zero-turn

mowers. The classic setup for this machine is to fit a large slasher-mower to its central PTO and immediately begin smashing out neatly clipped paddocks. Of course it will also handle pulling a trailer, carting sprayer equipment and even mounting a dozer blade up front. A powerful water cooled diesel engine developing 21 horsepower gets plenty of torque to those wide, soil-friendly tyres. But it’s beyond the realm of mowing where this step-up from the traditional lawn tractor to a real farming machine shines. That’s because the baby Kioti can handle a full range of tractor sized tools. Post hole borers, stump grinders, power

Lifestyles ‘n’ Farming From wasteland to garden u by Andy Bryenton

Gardening fever grips the country as spring works its magic — and there’s two distinct kinds of garden chores which we’re all facing, especially those of us with small acreage lifestyle blocks. The first is to chop back the ravenous weeds which encroach on our little slice of paradise. The second is to establish productive gardens to deliver fresh vegetables to the table.

blades of the TR 430 mulch anything already growing on top into finger-length chaff, ready to rot down and feed your chosen crop. A clever anti-tangle system means that even long and whippy tendrils — such as those of the dreaded kikuyu grass — don’t foul up the spindle or the blade assembly. Even this tough, fibrous matter meets its demise as the tiller creeps forward, reducing thick overgrowth and densely packed soil to a nicely crumbly consistency. A couple of passes is enough to cultivate down a good hand’s width, meaning that simple broadcast sowing along with a little fertiliser can complete your new vege patch. A wide cutting swathe means it’s possible to establish gardens for separate crops with walkways in between. If you’re one of the many

AL

An ideal solution for planting out large areas would be to simply plough through the overgrowth, kikuyu and scrubby weeds. But that’s a job for a big tractor, right? Well, not necessarily. The research team at Husqvarna have been busy tinkering with the classic handguided rotary tiller, and what they’ve come up with could be a game changer for those who want to lay garden beds without the back breaking work. Their TR 430 places the engine at the front and the tines at the rear, meaning there’s more weight bearing down on the cutting edge as it attacks the ground. As the machine draws itself forward in a pair of cleated tyres the blades counter rotate for maximum resistance. Although there’s little resistance when those sharp tines hit the scrub. AI to help the wine flow Artificial Intelligence, or AI, has been making waves in many industries and now the New Zealand wine sector is getting in on the act, thanks to a research and development company owned by Lincoln University. Selwyn based Lincoln Agritech Ltd has developed a computerised system to make early-season predictions on a grape yield more accurate. “Grape growers and wineries spend a lot of money trying to predict their grape yield each year,” Lincoln Agritech Optics and Image Processing leader Dr Jaco Fourie said. “This currently involves hiring a large number of workers to manually sample grape bunches.” Dr Fourie said they are currently working on creating a more convenient

to predict grape yield at harvest time.” He said new data will be added to the system each year, leading to continuous improvements in the model’s accuracy, with the system’s predictive power (AI) improving over time as more data is gathered under different conditions. Dr Fourie said profitable wine production depends on early knowledge of the grape yield that is likely to be harvested each season. “Estimating the yield as soon as possible allows marketers to know how much wine will end up being produced.” The main focus of grape varieties for the study is Sauvignon Blanc, after which they will identify how much technology development will be needed for Pinot Noir. ¢

Jet Boat Marathon ADVERTORIAL

Avoid Drink Driving

Thunder on the water

be tHe SOBER D FOr A NIGHt

The jetboat is a Kiwi invention, a tourist institution and the key to a range of high-octane powersports on the water. It’s a serious case of ‘lose the propeller, add to the thrills’ when top-flight jet boats rev up to compete in everything from manic sprint races to offshore speed record blasts. So it’s fitting that the ITM World Jet Boat Marathon, held on October 13th to 21st this year, is firing up on the waters of the Waimakariri river. Boats across four classes will be pitted against each other five at a time, armed with everything from roaring V8s through to gas-powered helicopter turbine engines capable of propelling a crew past 150 miles per hour. That’s fast in the air, or on a drag strip — on water, it’s a blistering pace indeed. Teams from as far away as the United States, Mexico and Canada will compete over 15 legs of the competition, traversing the wild rivers of the South Island. Local entrants Gareth and Andy Munro are entered in A Class, doing their third marathon and they’re excited about the prospect of fronting up before a Kiwi crowd. The pair have been flat out preparing their 21 foot tunnel-hull craft and it’s ‘beating heart’ — a monster 600 horsepower 434 cubic inch Chevrolet V8. Gareth and Andy started racing in 2010 racing the local circuit, then stepped up to challenge the 2011 NZ Marathon title. Not only did they finish first in A class that year, they were also judged fifth fastest overall, and took home the trophy for best presented boat. Last year’s Marathon was a great event, say Gareth and Andy — despite being cut short by mechanical gremlins. “The preparation of the boat and crew was excellent, but on the second to last day an

engine problem meant we had to withdraw. We were sitting in sixth place overall and third in class, and all was looking great for a good placing.” It was a disappointment, but such is the fickle luck of all motorsports, on and off the water. There was no way though that the team was giving up. Boats are Gareth’s life as he manufactures the Jetseeker brand with his father Lindsay. Andy is an Aircraft Engineer so he offers great skills in helping with the preparation. Now they’re ready to bring home the 2017

title — with a little luck, a lot of skill and a whole heap of power!

Handcrafting waders for 30 years. We specialise in waders and use only the best quality materials available. Waders measured to fit.

Covering 188 hectares, Izone has more land developed, zoned and ready to bring services and infrastructure into development, than any industrial park in New Zealand. The fully master-planned, greenfield site is currently home to more than 70 companies involved mostly in manufacturing, warehousing and logistics, and servicing Canterbury’s significant agricultural sector. They’ve committed to Izone due to its state-ofthe-art infrastructure, pivotal location and stable alluvial soils. Izone specialises in assisting clients to optimise their use of land by tailoring boundaries to best fit site size and dimension requirements. affordable land prices, low annual rates and favourable district plan rules. These include: no development levies, no maximum site cover, and no restrictions on the generation of traffic movements. Izone specialises in assisting clients to optimise their land use by tailoring boundaries to best fit their site size and dimension requirements. The aim is to help businesses achieve an optimal building footprint and avoid unnecessary capital outlay on surplus land. Izone is subject to a specific Business ‘2A’ zoning within the Selwyn District Plan. This provides for business activities requiring large footprint buildings and/ or sites, and is subject to controls that recognise the unique characteristics of Izone, including the use of a single Outline Development Plan. Development contributions can amount to several hundred thousand dollars and are charged by many district councils to offset the cost of the increased demand on local water, stormwater, wastewater and roading systems. The amount of contribution required is typically assessed at the time the building consent application is lodged, and must be paid as a prerequisite to issuing a code of compliance certificate. In all cases development contributions represent a major

component of any new project budget. The good news at Izone is that Selwyn District Council does not charge a contribution on new industrial and commercial buildings. The development’s ownership by Selwyn District Council ensures commercially favourable district plan rules that include: no development levies, maximum site cover requirements, or restrictions on the generation of traffic movements. The Izone development includes no maximum site cover, which means that after making provision for landscaping, car parking and stormwater disposal, the balance of the land can be brought into development. In contrast, some industrial zones in Christchurch City have maximum site coverage requirements ranging from 25% to 50%. Izone has a relatively permissive retail activity provision; any retail activity at Izone is permitted provided it occupies 20% or less of the gross floor area of building on that allotment or 2,000m2, whichever is the lesser. In contrast, the Business 5 (General Industrial) Zone in Christchurch limits retail activity to 20% of the net floor area on the premises used to produce, process or store those goods, or 350m2 retail floor space, whichever is the lesser. ¢
