This Friday, the 32nd annual Darfield Art Week run by the Malvern Community Arts Council kicks off with over 120 artists taking up the challenge of showcasing their works. One of those is Kirwee artist Lorraine Jacobs who says when she first picked up a watercolour paintbrush, it was a practical decision to fulfill her creative whims while travelling. What’s kept her painting has become something a lot more personal. “I love it. I’m passionate about it. I’m confident in my ability,” says Lorraine, whose first creative outlet was pottery. A move to the United States of America for 12 years to work in partnership with her husband meant pottery was put on hold. Lorraine turned her hand to watercolour painting, taking lessons from Christchurch artist Judith Hitchings in the year before leaving for the States. “I discovered I had an eye for detail and for making things work. People think watercolour should be ‘pastelly’, but I like dramatic stuff. One thing I like about watercolour is you can let it make its own discoveries.” Lorraine demonstrates this technique by applying water to the canvas and then drops in some colour. What looks like a random event, dries to reveal a dramatic impression of shrubbery. “I love capturing something that I think is interesting or beautiful — capturing a moment or a particular time of day. Being able to replicate it is fascinating to me.” Landscape is where it’s at for Lorraine, who first revelled in

this discovery following the Canterbury snow storm of 1992. A day excursion to the snow filled hills behind Glentunnel began a lifelong affiliation with capturing snow on canvas. “With landscapes, I journey into the landscape. I think about what I’m seeing and where the light is coming from. It’s always about light.” While living in the USA Lorraine began exhibiting her work. She joined local art organisations and her work was well received at art shows. Lorraine has continued to work to improve her painting techniques.

“A good painter is someone who is prepared to take the time and notice and observe. It is someone who is keen to capture something that fascinates them and can be bothered to learn the techniques to capture the image. My aim has always been to take the ordinary and make it more.” Now settled back in New Zealand Lorraine has set up her own studio and gallery and is passing her knowledge and passion for painting on to her students. “I like my students to go as far as possible and for most of them that’s a long way. I don’t keep my clever tricks, knowledge or techniques to myself.” ¢

The Dunsandel Volunteer Fire Brigade has taken possession of its new emergency response vehicle. The keys to the vehicle were handed over to the brigade by John Penno, the managing director of Synlait Milk, which funded the purchase. Chief Fire Officer Ian Chatterton said being able to provide additional support to the existing fire appliance and water tanker when responding to local emergencies is a great boost to the brigade. “The vehicle will be used to respond to emergencies in all weather conditions and allow us to access remote areas, secure the scene of motor vehicle accidents faster, and respond to priority one medical emergencies in support of ambulance services. “We will also use the vehicle for non-emergency events within the local community like fire safety promotions and the fire wise programme at schools.” Mr Chatterton said the support Synlait Milk has given to the local brigade has been fantastic.

Rolleston’s new primary school a step closer
New venue for long standing Hororata event
u by Kent Caddick
The Hororata Parish Spring Fair, held annually on Labour Day, will have a new venue for this year’s event.
The Selwyn District Council has formally received a Notice of Requirement (NoR) from the Ministry of Education to designate a 4.5ha area of land in Rolleston for a new primary school. The notice refers to land on the corner of Dunns Crossing and Burnham School Roads and is to be set aside for primary and pre-school educational services. The ministry is in negotiation to purchase the land. MoE Regional Operations deputy secretary Katrina Casey said the ministry hopes to achieve a negotiated outcome satisfactory to both parties. Council’s planning manager Tim Harris said staff will review the application over the next few weeks, determine whether they need any more information and assess it for any environmental impacts such as traffic flows and parking. “It is a similar process to a resource consent application although we do not make a decision on it but refer our recommendations back to the applicant along with any conditions which may need to be attached. It may be available for public submissions if it is notified.” The NoR doesn’t determine what format the school would take only where it could be sited. The Ministry of Education, through consultant Michael Deaker, is currently speaking with local residents as well as other local schools and organisations to determine what sort of educational services model is appropriate for Rolleston. ¢

The Spring Fair, which has been providing families a fun day out for over 18 years on the grounds of the St John’s Church will this year be held at the Hororata Domain. Fair committee chair Lucy Cookson said they have simply outgrown the church grounds. “The fair has grown considerably over the past six years with more stall holders wanting to attend and people from not only Hororata but the wider Selwyn and surrounding districts enjoying the event. “With the growth we not only need more space for the fair activities but better, safer parking and to get away from the busy intersection of Downs and Hororata roads. “It is a little bit sad not to be holding the fair in the shadows of the stone church but the opportunities the Hororata Domain offers the event are very exciting.” While the Spring Fair will be at a new venue, the 2013 event will feature many old favourites including the White Elephant, second-hand books, heaps of family entertainment, food, and
the Country Auction. Creative Kids will be back again with new categories for school children to display their creativity including sandsaucers, 3D model making, textiles, art and bake a cake. “This competition has become very popular and is a great way to involve the children in the event,” Ms Cookson said. The Young Enterprise area, which was introduced last year will return. The programme gives five young entrepreneurs the opportunity to feature their bright ideas to the community. “Last year the Spring Fair experienced anything but spring weather with rain, hail and snow. Then it poured when we held the Twilight Fair so we are hoping that the 2013 event has better luck and the sun shines. “However being at the domain we will have more wet weather options so the event will go ahead regardless.” The Hororata Parish Spring Fair will be held at the Hororata Domain, Labour Day (October 28) from 9.30am to 2pm, entry is free. Fortunately the race was able to go ahead on Sunday, despite it being less than perfect race conditions. “When you postpone an event you usually expect to lose 20 to 30 per cent of competitors but we didn’t at all,” race organiser Karyn Robertson said. “It was wonderful to see that not only was the postponement not enough to deter the competitors, neither was a foggy, freezing cold wet day on Sunday.” Ben Hoetjes was first to conquer this year’s course, winning the men’s race in a time of one hour 18 minutes just ahead of his brother Jos. Performers wanted for Country Christmas in the Park
Antioxidants and Inflammation Researchers now know that tissue damage from free radicals is closely linked with inflammation. In some diseases free radicals damage cells and tissues which triggers unwanted inflammation while in others the inflammation comes first, generating a massive increase in tissue free radical production. For example, in osteoarthritis, free radical damage comes first followed by inflammation. If antioxidant defences are poor, free radicals damage cartilage cells which cause a loss of cartilage. The immune system then responds with inflammation trying to fix something it cannot repair. With Rheumatoid arthritis it appears to be the reverse where the synovial lining in joints becomes inflamed which increases free radicals. Fortunately nature has provided potent anti-inflammatory compounds in food that can prevent free radical damage and can reduce inflammation. These compounds are both anti-inflammatory and potent antioxidants. Last week we discussed the grape derived antioxidants, the OPC’s from grape seeds and resveratrol from grape skins. Another of my favourites is Acai berry extracts. This amazing Amazonian palm fruit is loaded with anti-aging, anti-antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. Look for the really potent 5:1 extracts and target 500–1,000mg daily. This can help with energy, circulation and are very anti-inflammatory. The best formulations combine Acai with grape seed OPC and Resveratrol. Both turmeric and ginger have anti-inflammatory qualities and can really help reduce tissue inflammation. Turmeric contains curcumin which is both a potent antioxidant and powerful anti-inflammatory agent. It is very beneficial for arthritis and most inflammatory problems. Ginger contains compounds called gingerols which likewise exhibit both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Both are easy to get from diet but I do add curcumin extracts to various antioxidant formulas. A great way to get the benefits from ginger is to grate 1-2 teaspoons of ginger root then soak in boiling water for 5+ minutes and drink. Ginger is great for nausea and is very calming. If you are affected by inflammatory problems get some good advice on diet and supplements as these combined can make a big difference. Call me if you need some ideas. A new way to look at windows u by Barbara Horn, Town & Country Interiors, www.town-country.co.nz
Once, long ago, we knew exactly what to do with a window when it came to window coverings. In the eighteenth century windows were largely left bare. Materials were too expensive and only the very rich did more than string a fabric frill across the top of the window and rely on the external shutters for privacy and warmth. As fabric became more readily available and cheaper in the nineteenth century — house window coverings became more mass market and fashionable. During the twentieth century the greatest focus was on the practical need of keeping the drafts out of the older-style homes. Many grand homes had windows covered in multi-layers and tassels and swags with the first layer being a ‘net’ of some description. Other more modest bungalows had a version of this but with much less fabric, frill and fuss. In the twenty-first century there is a completely new way of looking

at window coverings and what they can bring to a room. Technology has partly prompted this trend. For example wall to wall floor coverings, double glazing and central heating. With this freedom comes a shift in the focus. These days anything goes, fashion trends and the availability of a huge range of materials allow us to choose fabrics and patterns, new accessories and trimmings for window treatments that would startle our ancestors but perfectly suit today’s easier lifestyle. As these trends have developed so has the quest for more choice and versatility with the hardware used to hang curtains and blinds. The tension wire kits with eyelet hooks, sold in supermarkets, are still used but electronic multi-track gliding panel systems provide versatile control of windows from a translucent covering

Selecting curtains that draw the focus to the window by using strong colours and patterns next to more neutral furnishings and carpet is one option. Another way to set the style is to complement the period or modern furniture with a similar design on the curtains, or alternatively we can make the windows recede totally into the background if they are unattractive or they have no inspiring view from them, by using softer colours and a simple drape structure. The modern day problem solving ability of curtain making is huge, and a few tricks of the trade will let you make the best of any window, old or new. Sometimes homeowners are unaware of certain issues with windows and make the problem even more obvious with the incorrect choice of window covering or hardware. New look for Darfield Bakery The Darfield Bakery has just put the finishing touches to an extensive renovation which has taken 12 months to complete. Owners Daryl and Nicky Collier began planning the bakery renovations two years ago which has seen the floor space of the business nearly double in size. The building originally used to be a merchandise store for farmers. This provided some challenges to the renovations including the removal of around 40 truckloads of concrete due to the original building having two levels. “They needed the two levels for the store so that they could load big sacks onto trucks,” says Daryl. Another challenge was to stay open during the renovations. Doing the work in stages meant the business only had to be shut for three days. “We had to train the customers after each change how to find the shop.” An architect designed the footprint of
the new building and Daryl and Nicky designed the interior. “The internal flow now is fantastic. Goods arrive in the back door and go into storage. From there they are taken to the kitchen for the bakers and through to the shop.” Customers familiar with the old building will notice the increase in seating space. A two-way schist fire is a dramatic design feature, as is the high ceiling lined with rough sawn oregon. A second outdoor eating area has also been added. Staff appreciate the change in working conditions from the small artificially lit kitchen to the large baking facility they now have with lots of natural light and state of the art equipment. The use of many local businesses for the renovations was important to

What’s happening in Darfield u by Darfield Township Committee chairperson Judith Pascoe
Did you notice how well Darfield looked this spring? The cherry trees are now large enough to make a real statement and more daffodils have been planted. Darfield has a lot to offer residents and prospective residents. There will shortly be a new medical centre. We are almost there, with an opening scheduled in the next month or so. A new supermarket, a larger Four Square, is planned for the area behind the present supermarket. There will be plenty of parking where the current supermarket sits and room for a few other businesses. Westview Park is a popular recreation area for all ages and the skatepark is well used. New toilets are being planned for this area. These are now at the planning and design stage and this should result in a building that reflects the landscape and architecture of Darfield. Earthquake land recovery programme adopted Environment Canterbury has adopted the Natural Environment Recovery Programme which could see a growing number of parks and recreation grounds sprouting up on earthquake damaged land in Selwyn. ECan’s Chair of Commissioners Dame Margaret Bazley said the programme ensures rehabilitation of the natural environment following the earthquakes. “This is very important for the future wellbeing of all Cantabrians — our natural environment is a fundamental part of our shared heritage and culture. “Many of us choose to live in or near Christchurch because we appreciate and value the natural environment — the rivers, the beaches and harbours, the forests and Port Hills — and the activities these special places provide. “We now better understand the consequences of living on land that is subject to rockfall, liquefaction or flooding. We want to improve the water quality and ecosystem health of rivers, streams, wetlands and estuaries. “We recognise the many opportunities to improve recreation facilities during the rebuild and recovery,” Dame Margaret said.

A drive around the Selwyn district still reveals the destruction caused by recent storms but residents are being warned about a do-it-yourself approach to removing damaged trees.
p ECan’s Chair of Commissioners Dame Margaret Bazley
Seventeen projects led by different organisations have been included in the programme to reflect priorities identified by the community. “For example, there is a strong community desire for land made available being used to provide for recreation and parks,” Dame Margaret said. “I am confident that this programme will help greatly in ‘The voice of your community’ fostering an environment that all those living in greater Christchurch appreciate, value and respect. The partners look forward to working with our communities on the natural environment recovery projects that matter most to them.” ¢

p Selwyn residents are being urged to take a cautious approach to removing storm damaged trees
Mat Palmer from Advanced Tree Services in Templeton said his first piece of advice to people is to not try and do it all themselves. “If large limbs are broken or hanging, or if high or overhead chainsaw work is needed, it is a job for a professional arborist. Storm damaged trees can be dangerous.” Mat advises avoiding the mistake of diving into a clean-up job. “Stop and assess prior to starting work, and continually re-assess whilst clearing fallen trees, as tension and compression wood can be extremely unpredictable. “Before beginning work look up and down for possible hazards, including downed utility lines and dangerous hanging branches that look like they are ready to fall.” When evaluating damaged trees Mr Palmer said people should ask the following questions: Other than the storm damage, is the tree basically healthy and vigorous?
Are major limbs or the leader (the main upward-trending branch on most trees) branch still remaining? Is at least 50 per cent of the tree’s crown (branches and leaves) still intact? Are there remaining branches that can form a new branch structure? Mr Palmer said if people answered ‘yes’ to the majority of those questions, there is a good chance for complete recovery. “If the tree can be saved then remove all broken branches or stubs that are still attached to the tree to minimise the risk of decay agents entering the wound. Proper pruning cuts should be used to avoid damaging the tree further. “My advice would be to use a professional for hung up or broken limbs. Work at height and always wear chainsaw protective clothing.” Fallen trees that are beyond repair require a cautious approach to salvage. “Always release the root plates prior to cutting up the fallen tree.” ¢

Learning opportunities through school productions u by Belinda Cullen-Reid
The recent Kirwee Model School production celebrated the theme of excellence in learning. By journeying through different destinations such as Too Hard Town, Temptation Alley, ClassClownville, Boredom Town, Competition and Pain Central, the lead characters travelled on to the ultimate learning destination — Mt Excellence. Putting on a school production is a journey in itself and Kirwee Model School has found a formula that sees them produce bright vibrant shows annually. Principal Sarah Wiki-Bennet says it’s all about keeping it simple. “Essentially we have a set formula where we ensure the year six students weave the story together — every class has one item and then a whole school finale.” “We have two rules — the children have to enjoy doing it and as long as the parents all get to see their child on stage nothing else matters. “[The school production] is entrenched in the culture of the school. This is what we do here. Our aim is to give students a well-rounded education through a variety of learning experiences. We cater for individual needs and the arts goes a long way in achieving this.” Mrs Wiki-Bennet says a school production provides important learning opportunities for students.
“Production is about two things — bringing together our arts learning from the term and developing individuals. “[Students] get the experience of live stage performance. Our year six students benefit as they get to do the backstage. They get to do the set-up and ICT side of the production, as well as take lead roles. “A production allows for some students to shine in an area which you may not get to see in other circumstances. This is where a passion for performing arts can be ignited and then taken further for some children.” Sharing the arts with the community is also a focus for the school. “We love to get our community together to share student learning, so a production is another great event to do this. Our parents, families and wider community are so very proud of the children. They love the fact that it is always just a burst of colour and performance.
“One of the tricks is that we don’t have it running too long, usually 45 minutes.” While professional and amateur theatre productions can be very costly, Kirwee keeps the cost down by writing their own scripts and utilising their own teaching staff as the ‘experts’. “We have a small budget of about $500 which is mainly for hall hire over the week leading up to production and the odd props. We rely on our team of teachers and usually there is always an individual who has a strong arts background so they become the natural leader. In my experience the staff at KMS have always risen to the challenge.” ¢
