Selwyn is one of the worst central South island territorial local authorities when it comes to the ratio of women to men elected to council. Of 11 councillors at SDC only two, or 18%, are women. Christchurch City Council is the leading authority when it

comes to gender balance with five of the 13 councillors women (38.5%) while the Waimakariri District Council is the worst, with just one councillor of 11 (9%) of the female gender. Three, or 25%, of Ashburton District Council’s 12 councillors are women while of Hurunui District Council’s nine elected representatives, two (22%) are women. None of the central South Island councils currently have a woman as mayor although that may change in Christchurch with former Labour MP Lianne Dalziel the leading contender for the top job.

Council aims to reduce motorcycle fatalities u by Kent Caddick

Selwyn District Council has launched a new public education campaign and motorcycle skills coaching programme to help reduce motorcycle crashes in the district.

p Between 2008 and 2012 there were 65 motorcycle crashes in Selwyn

In New Zealand, the risk of being involved in a fatal or injury crash is 20 times higher for a motorcyclist than for a car driver. From 2008 to 2012, there were 65 motorcycle crashes in Selwyn resulting in four fatalities, 34 serious injuries, 31 minor injuries and seven noninjury crashes. Selwyn District Road Safety Coordinator, Ngaire Tinning says the number of motorcycle crashes is very concerning and council has launched the Live to Ride campaign to try to reduce the number and severity of crashes in Selwyn. “Live to Ride aims to make motorists more aware of motorcyclists on our roads and also encourage riders to increase their skills and reduce their chances of being involved in a crash,” she says. As part of Live to Ride the council is offering subsidised half and full day motorcycle skills coaching. The courses offer motorcyclists the chance to refresh

their skills, and learn and practise new techniques. The courses are delivered by NZTA qualified trainers and include off-road and on-road training to develop braking, handling and safe driving skills. The half day course costs $20, while the full day advanced course is $50. The Council is offering all riders that complete the courses between September 2013 and March 2014 entry into a prize draw for a $300 protective motorcycle clothing voucher. A Live to Ride motorcycle information flyer has been developed for riders and will be distributed at events in Selwyn and from council offices and libraries. Motorcyclists who request a copy of the Live to Ride information flyer on line will also go into a draw to win one of two $40 MTA Vouchers. Motorcyclists who want to register for the courses can do so by visiting www. live2ride.co.nz or phoning 03 347 2901. Places are limited, so early registration is advised. ¢

Soldier takes stand against domestic violence A former Burnham based soldier has been inspired to tramp the length of New Zealand for charity after witnessing first-hand the effects of domestic violence. Major Patrick Beath recently returned from a nine-month deployment to the Solomon Islands where he served as the Senior National Officer for the New Zealand Defence Force. During his deployment he visited a shelter for victims of domestic violence and decided to do something to help raise awareness of the problem. Statistics show that almost two in every three women in the Solomon Islands have reported being physically or sexually abused by their partner. “Domestic violence is a high profile problem over in the Solomon Islands, but it’s also a problem right here in New Zealand,” Major Beath said. So the father of one chose Safer Homes in New Zealand Every Day (SHINE) as his charity of choice and hopes to raise more than $10,000 as he tramps more than 3,000km from Cape Reinga to Bluff along the Te Araroa Trail. Major Beath began his journey on Saturday, August 31. “My mum uses the phrase ‘think globally, act locally’ and that’s why I decided to do this for SHINE — I like their approach to providing proactive and practical help, especially for children.” Donations can be made at www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/ kiwiscoutwalksnzforshine. ¢

Friends of Darfield Hospital in good health Thirty four people attended the Friends of Darfield Hospital AGM which was held at Trinity Church recently. The evening began with a talk from Canterbury District Health Board CEO David Meates who spoke about the reconstruction of the board’s major hospitals following the recent earthquakes, and the opportunity the quakes had provided for innovations around the design of new facilities. In his report on the year’s activities, Friends of Darfield Hospital chair Brian Davidson, thanked his committee for their strong support and commitment which enabled several valuable items to be provided for the hospital. Among these were new drapes for the patient and visitor lounge/sunroom and for one patient room, a mobile procedures trolley, and a number of smaller items. Mr Davidson said two wheelchairs, two over-bed tables, two mobile phones and an extra television set had also recently been ordered. “Providing these items can only be achieved through the support of a generous and supportive community. “Feedback from patients and visitors suggests that Darfield Hospital continues to be held in the highest regard. This is due to the outstanding leadership of Nurse Manager Maureen, the professionalism and care being provided by the staff, and the attractive way in which the caretaker Adrian maintains the grounds.” During the year organisations and groups provided Friends of Darfield Hospital with extra support and the Darfield Indoor Bowling Club, Darfield Pharmacy, Val Briggs Interiors, Templeton Manor and the Malvern Lions Club were thanked for their assistance.

Free radicals and antioxidants (Part 1) In my recent seminars I was asked to explain free radicals and antioxidants. The challenge is that any explanation must at least explain the basic chemistry involved. This series of columns will hopefully remove some of the mystery and build our understanding on the importance, qualities and functions of antioxidants. A free radical is just an atom or molecule that has an unpaired electron. Free radicals are produced as a result of our body converting the energy in our body from our food. We cannot produce energy without also producing free radicals and these readily react with other free radicals or other compounds which can cause serious damage to body structures. Essentially free radicals damage healthy cells and if this continues then damage will accrue resulting in disease. Antioxidants are compounds such as vitamins C and E that neutralise free radicals by donating or accepting electrons to the free radical thus preventing free radical damage. For example vitamin E protects the delicate cell wall. If this is damaged cell malfunction and die. Vitamin E also helps prevent ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol from oxidising within heart arteries. This is the first step in coronary artery disease. This is why I include 200IU of natural vitamin E in my multi-formula. Targeted antioxidant therapy can play an important role in rebuilding damaged cells and body systems as a result of chronic disease. For example, free radical damage to blood vessels causes damage to collagen and other structural proteins leading to poor circulation, strokes and hypertension. The most important antioxidants in protecting blood vessels are vitamin C, the bioflavonoids and polyphenols such as those extracted from grape seeds and berries. Over the next few editions we will look at specific antioxidants and the role they play in maintaining and restoring health. The key to obtaining adequate antioxidant levels is to have a diet rich in a variety of plant foods and to supplement with a broad spectrum antioxidant supplement that is also a complete multi-vitamin and multi-mineral. Among the guarantees are the following: • Services must be carried out with reasonable care and skill. This means that the service must be at least as good as what a competent person with average skills and experience would provide. • Services must be fit for any particular purpose that you have told the service provider about. This means that the service must be reasonably fit for any particular purpose, or reasonably achieve any particular result, that you asked for. After you have told the service provider what service you want from them, and they accept the job, they must make sure that they comply with this so that you get what you want. However, you can’t rely on this guarantee if you insist on a service that the provider says is not going to produce the results you want. For example, if you insist on a hair colour that your hairdresser says won’t work on your hair then you can’t complain if the shade isn’t right. • Services must be provided within a reasonable time if you have not agreed on a time when the job must be finished. “Reasonable” time will be judged on the time it takes a competent person who works in that type of job to complete the task. • Services must also be provided at a reasonable price if you haven’t agreed on a price. If the problem is minor you can ask the service provider to fix it at no cost to you. If they refuse or fail to do so or take more than a reasonable time to fix it you can get someone else to fix it and claim the cost from the supplier or cancel the contract for service and refuse to pay for all or some of the work done. If the problem is major you can cancel the contract for the service and refuse to pay for the work done or pay less than the agreed price. If you have already paid you may be able to get some or all of your money back. If the work has caused damage to other property, you can claim compensation for that damage (this is called consequential loss). Darfield High School students have taken out a top prize at the Canterbury Mashup business competition held recently in Christchurch.

p Darfield High School students, from left: Lochie Marshall, George Watson, Henry Oliver and Bruno Deans after their award winning presentation at the Canterbury Mashup 2013

Seven teams from different Canterbury high schools spent a weekend using their IT, business development and marketing skills to design a webpage or computer application that would be useful for people in Canterbury. The four-student team won the Best Presented Mashup Award for their work designing a phone application to bring potential product buyers together to buy products in bulk at a reduced price. “The boys did a very good job

of presenting their ideas,” Commerce teacher Bruce Thomson says. Team members Henry Oliver, Bruno Deans, Lachie Marshall and George Watson spent the weekend being mentored by professionals who helped them to see things from a business perspective. “One of the things they learnt is about life outside of school. They learnt about providing solutions and understanding customer’s needs,” Mr Thomson says. ¢

Starship calls on Selwyn for support Selwyn residents are being asked to dig deep to help raise funds for New Zealand’s national children’s hospital, Starship. Starship Spring Clean, Starship Foundation’s annual fundraising campaign, kicked off this month and Kiwis across the country are being asked to clean out their cupboards, sell their unwanted goods and pledge some or all of the proceeds to Starship. There are two ways to get involved in the Starship Foundation’s annual campaign, buy and sell items on Trade Me or hold a good old-fashioned Kiwi garage sale. Some quirky and unique items have already been donated to this year’s Starship Spring Clean, which will be auctioned off on Trade Me. These include a 10-minute one-on-one Skype chat with actress Lucy Lawless, a lifesize Mercedes McLaren F1 Racing Simulator, a well-loved rugby jersey that has been signed

by 200 current and former All Blacks, and a week’s luxury accommodation at Terrace Downs Resort in Selwyn which was donated by a dedicated Starship staff member. Once the public starts listing their items on the Trade Me Starship Spring Clean store, there will be all sorts of weird and wonderful items to purchase in support of Starship. To sell Starship Spring Clean items on Trade Me, visit www.trademe.co.nz/starship and sellers who donate at least 50% of the sale price to Starship will be refunded their success fee by Trade Me. To hold a garage sale in support of Starship, participants should register at www.starship. org.nz/garagesale to download a handy garage sale toolkit. ¢

excellent protection for drapes is to use a quality treated lining fabric. Thin poly cotton-type linings allow the sun to indirectly damage the drape fabric by letting the light reflect through. Shrinkage is the biggest risk with all cleaning methods used on fabrics, and most manufacturers advise an allowance of 3% to be acceptable within the industry. As with clothing, pilling is another common occurrence for furnishing fabrics and should not be considered a fabric fault. There are many variables that can trigger pilling including climatic conditions, atmosphere purity and user environment. Constant friction loosens the fibres over time and particles work their way

HOME&Living to the surface of the fabric. This can be easily removed with a standard or battery powered lint shaving accessory and will not affect fabric performance. Oxidation is a well identified issue for fabrics. Fumes from chimneys, smoking, open fires, gas fires or wherever combustion is present, produce a sulphur compound. When combined with humidity this matter is absorbed by or clings to the furnishing fabric and contributes to discolouration or deterioration of the fabric. Sometimes this is also called yellowing and is especially bad for white or light background coloured modernday fabrics. Regular vacuuming to avoid the buildup of dust is strongly recommended. Use low suction on drapes and wind it up a little on upholstery. Turning reversible cushions over regularly is another good habit to adopt. These actions will help to reduce the build-up of soiling and any ingrained dirt. Soiling may result in the breakdown of yarns within the fabric and can cause premature wearing. Treating spills and stains as soon as possible is the secret, but is not a guarantee that all marks can be removed.

From there I moved up to Nelson to teach in Year 3 and Year 5/6 classrooms at Tahunanui Primary School. After four years at Tahunanui I won a position at Nelson Intermediate in the senior management team and teaching the Year 8 Extension Class. I’ve also lectured in Physical Education for Canterbury University at the Nelson campus. Teaching in Year 1 to Year 8 classrooms has allowed me to develop a thorough understanding of junior, middle and senior teaching and learning programmes in the primary education system.

Why did you apply for the Sheffield principal job? Whilst I’m certainly keen to progress my career, this opportunity really stuck out to me for a number of reasons. The school is in a brilliant position thanks to the current leadership team, the Board of Trustees, staff and community. The school’s infrastructure is well set up for the ‘21st Century’ learning climate and the staff and BOT are committed to up-skilling the teaching and learning delivery at Sheffield School. New pavilion planned for Weedons Reserve u by Kent Caddick

Public consultation will soon get underway on a proposal to develop a $600,000 sports and community pavilion at Weedons.

p Weedons Reserve Committee members in front of the current reserve pavilion, from left, Paul Coburn, Owen Chatterton, Peter Holmes, Marian Powell, and Councillor Jeff Bland

Consultation on the proposal will begin in September with residents and groups who may use the facility being invited to attend two drop in sessions at Weedons Reserve. Committee chair Peter Holmes, says the consultation process will be an important opportunity for residents to decide whether they support the construction of the new facility, which is proposed to include space for tennis and cricket, public toilets and a community meeting and activity space. “We are very excited about the project and see the pavilion as a great asset to the area,” Holmes says. “The local population has grown significantly in recent years and the existing pavilion is outdated and too small for the community. “We need a community facility which can be used by community groups for meetings, local events, social occasions and by sports groups.”

The committee is proposing a third of the cost of the project be funded from Development Contributions and $133,000 from a loan to be repaid by properties who contribute to the Weedons Reserve rate. Of the remaining $267,000 the committee is proposing $164,000 comes from club funds and grant applications, $60,000 from a grant from the Selwyn District Council, and the balance from funds held by the Reserve Committee and earthquake insurance funds. “The proposal to fund part of the facility from the reserve rate recognises the benefits of having a community meeting and the activity space available for the residents to use,” Holmes says. The reserve has a history dating back to 1856 and the cricket oval and club is one of the oldest in New Zealand. ¢
