Selwyn MP Amy Adams looks to be a sure bet to hold her seat in the coming general election but whether the National MP is part of the next government is very much in the balance.

Voting in this year’s election has begun, with a number of advance polling stations opening around the country this week, however, the majority of Selwyn voters will probably cast their ballots on election day, which falls on Saturday, September 23. Ms Adams is ranked number seven on the National Party list
and holds a number of senior ministerial posts including being the Ministers for Justice, Courts, and Social Housing. Five electorate candidates are lining up to attempt to defeat Ms Adams in Selwyn which has for a long time been a National stronghold. They are: Tony Condon (Labour), Brian Davidson (ACT),

With just under a fortnight until the General Election on September 23, Fish & Game is urging voters to take a good look at which political parties will do the most to improve the environment and recreational access to the outdoors. Chief executive Bryce Johnson said the environment has emerged as one of the top issues of the 2017 election, with some media commentators even dubbing it the environment election. He said public concern over the environment, particularly water, has been building for years. “The state of the country’s rivers, lakes and streams has been worrying people for years and their frustration at the lack of action and continued abuse of our waterways is now readily apparent. “Water quality is now one of the key issues that voters will consider before they cast their vote. “Fish & Game urges voters to consider the merits of each and every party’s environmental policy with a critical eye before voting.” Mr Johnson said access to the outdoors and the purchase of prime recreational areas by overseas buyers

The newly relocated exhibition in Christchurch tells stories from the Canterbury earthquakes and reopens at 299 Durham Street North (corner Armagh Street) this week. On September 16 and 17 entry will be free. Quake City charts the aftermaths of the September 4, 2010 and February 22, 2011 earthquakes, and the extraordinary response of the emergency services, international rescue teams, the thousands of volunteers who pitched in to help — construction workers, the Student Volunteer Army, the Farmy Army, and the resilience of Canterbury’s communities. The exhibition includes some of the objects which have defined the
Canterbury earthquakes including the spire of Christchurch Cathedral and the railway station clocks which stopped at 12.51 pm on February 22. The rebuild section of the exhibition brings the visitor up-to-date with progress in regenerating the city and the recovery projects underway. The exhibition, when originally located in Cashel Mall, opened in February 2013. When it closed there in June this year it had welcomed 193,000 visitors. In the year ending 30 June 2017, 21% of visitors were from New Zealand and 79% were from overseas. More than 1,500 school students visited in the year, two thirds from New Zealand.
Entries open for highland games by Kent Caddick
Selwyn residents are being encouraged to get their entries in for this year’s Hororata Highland Games.
Entries have opened for this year’s Hororata Highland Games
Entries for the games, which will this year be held on November 11 at the Hororata Domain, opened on Monday. The Hororata Highland Games is the only event in the South Island to feature all the traditional Scottish Games, including highland dancing, pipe bands and tug of war as well as caber toss, stone put and hammer throw. Games event manager Cindy Driscoll of the Hororata Community Trust said every year the Hororata Highland Games committee looks for ways to elevate the competitions. “We want to ensure we stage the best competitions we can which is why we invest in quality medals, stunning trophies hand crafted by local artist
Lorraine Natusch, and we fly in top judges and offer great prize money. “This year the event is hosting two South Island Highland Dancing championships along with six Canterbury West Coast championships. “We have a number of Pipe Bands looking to travel from outside of Canterbury to compete and again expect to have the best heavy athletes in the world competing for the Oceania Heavyweight Championship. “While the festival side of the event has grown the competitions are the heart of the Hororata Highland Games.” For more information on taking part in the games go to hororatahighlandgames. org.nz.
AMY ADAMS
A STRONG VOice FOR SeLWYN
THE RECORD September 13 - 2017 … continued from front page
Adams looks safe in Selwyn The second highest polling candidate in that election was former Selwyn district councillor Peter Hill who was standing for the Green Party. Hill gathered 4,064 votes compared to Adams 24,625. Labour, which ran a disastrous 2014 campaign in Selwyn, is currently riding the ‘Jacinda effect’ with the party leaping up in the polling since Jacinda Ardern took the party reins last month. However, while Labour’s 2017 candidate Tony Condon will no doubt benefit from that it is extremely unlikely he will be able to make much inroad into Ms Adams’ stranglehold in Selwyn. Springfield Ecotour operator Nicky Snoyink, who failed in a bid for an elected seat on Environment Canterbury in last year’s local body elections, will represent the newcomer to the New Zealand political scene, the Gareth Morgan backed The Opportunities Party or TOP. The Darfield born conservation advocate has a Masters in Environmental Policy from Lincoln University, and 20 years of experience working in the nature tourism sector. Missing from this year’s candidate list is Selwyn political institution Bill Woods, who is taking a break to concentrate on his role as president of the Summit Road Society which is heavily involved with restoring the

damage caused by the devastating firestorm on the Port Hills earlier this year. In terms of the party vote in Selwyn National again shows its dominance, garnering 22,809 votes in 2014 with Labour coming in second with 4,654 votes, and the Green Party third with just under 4,000 votes. With National and Labour close in the current polling the party vote may well decide who will be able to form the next Government. Labour has already indicated its willingness to work with the Green Party, but the Greens have taken a hit in recent months due to the fallout from co-leader Metiria Turei’s resignation. Once again that may well leave Winston Peters and New Zealand First in the role of kingmaker.

THE RECORD
Selwyn’s progress easy to see Entries closing by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP
As this will be my last column for The Record before the upcoming election it seems timely to reflect on what has been happening here in Selwyn during the past three years. Some of the changes that have occurred in Selwyn since the last election are easy to see, such as the four new schools and many new classrooms which have been built, and the extension to the Southern Motorway which is altering the landscape between Halswell and Rolleston. Other changes are less visible but just as important, such as the improved broadband services and cellphone coverage that many of our residents now have access to. This is also the case for some of the things that have made the most difference to local families and small businesses, including free visits to the doctor for children under 13 and reduced ACC levies. Our communities are thriving and it is one of the greatest rewards for me when I visit local schools to see healthy, engaged students, so enthusiastic
about their learning and proud of their new learning environments. I also love getting out and about and meeting business owners and hearing their positivity at how the local and national economy is performing, enabling them to expand and employ more staff. It has been especially heartening for me to see our communities putting the effects of the Canterbury earthquakes to rest with the opening of a number of fantastic new community facilities around Selwyn to replace those that were damaged. While Selwyn is a region in its own right we do also share facilities based in Christchurch city with the wider Canterbury region. For this reason it has also been great to see some of these projects completed, such as the new Burwood hospital, with others well underway.

West Melton School’s Enviro Focus group makes its Enviroschools’ presentation
The Enviroschools’ programme supports children and young people to plan, design and implement sustainability actions that are important to them and their communities. West Melton earned its silver status following a presentation by the school’s Enviro Focus group of learners to Matt Sanford from Enviroschools recently. Enviro Focus group is made up of the following students: Stacey M, Rosie B, Jed Mc, Isla Mc, Luke W, Lucy D, Georgia O, Alice R, Nash A, Iroquois R, Oliver S, Elisha H, Sophie H and Caleb D. Enviroschool teacher Liz Coster said the group did an amazing job of
presenting the enviro projects which are taking place across the school and answering a range of questions about the enviro connections evident at West Melton. “This work reflects all of the passion and hard work that is committed towards enviro in our school and community,” she said. “Through exploration, discovery and connections with the environment, tamariki and students experience how to make decisions and take action to improve the physical and social environment of our places, our community and our world.”
The movement inspired by the internationally acclaimed United Kingdom documentary ‘Project Wild Thing’ encourages children to play outdoors and reconnect with the natural world. Selwyn’s Project Wild Thing event will include a screening of the documentary for adults, while children experience a variety of play activities at the Rubicon Valley Tourist Centre with the TimberNook outdoor education team. Selwyn District Council’s senior events and recreation advisor Dave Tippett said the documentary will inspire Selwyn caregivers to encourage children to interact more with the natural environment. “This will help children learn vital skills such as risk management, goal
directed behaviour and resilience,” he said. “By ‘rewilding’ childhood, Project Wild Thing aims to improve children’s health, happiness, and respect for the environment.” The event will include a farm display, games, rock skimming, and outdoor challenges. Optional jet boating and horseback tours are available at discounted rates. Selwyn’s Project Wild Thing will take place on Sunday, October 8 from 11am to 3pm at the Rubicon Valley Tourist Centre, Otarama Road, Springfield. Registrations are open now at www. selwyn.govt.nz, closing on Monday, October 2. Limited spaces are available. This event is for children aged 5–12 years old and up to two caregivers.

THE RECORD
Lincoln undefeated in 2017 by Kent Caddick
Lincoln has recorded back-to-back seasons without a loss when it secured the Selwyn premier netball title for the fifth year in a row on the weekend. The defending champions were confronted by a fired up Broadfield side in the final at the Lincoln Event Centre. Led up by the unflappable Laura Lowe and feisty defender Georgie Bolton, Broadfield put down the challenge early in the match, handing Lincoln one of its few quarter losses this season when it finished the first stanza ahead by 13-10. The lead could have been more but some wayward shooting by Broadfield restricted its lead, a facet of the game which was to cost it dearly as the game progressed. Lincoln tweaked its line up in the second quarter with Tyler Rollo moving to wing attack and young gun Missy Banks coming on at wing defence. The changes seemed to make the difference and the Lincoln juggernaut started to roll with shooter Hannah Wilson finding her range despite the intense pressure of the Broadfield defence. Lincoln’s defensive effort also
picked up pace forcing turnovers and held ball allowing Wilson and fellow shooter Courtney Cramond to put Lincoln back in front by halftime, 28-24. Broadfield’s shooting woes continued in the third quarter and with Char Porima controlling the centre court for Lincoln, the defending champions extended their lead to 42-30. While Broadfield made changes to its shooting line up in the final quarter it was too little too late, and while it won the quarter Lincoln held on to wrap up its ‘five-peat’ with a 57-47 victory. Lincoln, however, couldn’t complete the premier double with its B team going down to Burnham in the Premier 2 grade final. Burnham was far too strong for Lincoln B taking out the title 53-37. In other finals day results Templeton took out the Premier 3 title with a 6145 win over Lincoln C while Rolleston B overcame Southbridge B 41-36 in the Premier 4 final.
Tyler Rollo was one of the standouts in the final for Lincoln

he family have focussed on enhancing and protecting their 267ha property’s sensitive areas such as limestone outcrops and wetlands and were awarded the Environment Canterbury Water Quality Award at this year’s regional Ballance Farm Environment Awards. “Gullies and water courses have been fenced off and planting programmes are underway. Our farm system has been built to suit the environment in this drought-prone area and we use forages
that tolerate the dry climate better than ryegrass,” says Lyndon. Winning the water quality award is very much a family achievement through commitment and dedication with the next generation driving it. “Our eldest son is very excited because in Canterbury it doesn’t get any better than that award at present. “It has proved to us that what we are doing seems to be the right thing and we have renewed our focus and realise there is no room for complacency. There
are the things we are doing daily that have either a negative or positive impact on our environment.” The family have recognised things they need to work on including utilising the latest version of ‘Overseer’ and identifying ‘hot spots’ in their farming operation. The award has made them acutely aware of how they personally manage their impacts and how they may address issues that arise. “It is about change, and the practices we used in the past because of the focus

around water quality, may now need to be done differently,” says Lyndon. “We have made a decision to remove our ewe flock from the farm and establish more deer fencing. This will also give us the opportunity to protect more sensitive areas on the property.” The family are part of the Hurunui Water Project and understand that water could be flowing in Spring 2020 and they position themselves for that. “We see the potential of different opportunities water will give us and that may not be growing grass and running livestock, but the deer will still have a place on our dry hills,” says Lyndon. “We can’t wait for the water to come. Irrigation gives us options such as viticulture, seed or vegetable production. “We believe because we have been recognised by our peers and industry specialists as being at the forefront of water quality, we need to be up to the challenge of meeting industry standards. “There has been bad publicity with irrigation and dairy cows, but irrigation is being used for a range of things, not just dairy farming. “The last two years have been tough mentally and financially on the community and if an alternative is there, we need to take it. We have the consents — we just have to build the scheme and that requires farmers to invest together. Opportunities will open up that can add value to NZ Inc. “The government has recognised the value of irrigation schemes and understand why irrigation is important, and we believe we can balance the
negative environmental impact — the answer lies in the middle of the fors and againsts. “We should be proud to be farmers. Yes it needs to be done in a sustainable manner and I believe the majority meet that, and if we don't, we need to make the changes. That is part of the reason we run our ‘puketiradeer.com’ website. It allows everybody a view into our world. “Two years ago we had a Swiss group of farmers specifically come to spend time on our farm and that was a result of our website window to the world. They still look online every month. That is one way we are challenging a wider audience. “I don't think our family is unique. I think we are one of many family farms in New Zealand progressing positively. “The deer industry is positive. We have been farming for 21 years and I have attended a number deer and a sheep conferences over the years, and every year I come back to put up more six foot high fences. “We bought the farm off my parents as a sheep farm. We always liked deer so purchased a few. Seventeen years in we fenced off 200ha and increased the herd number substantially and now we are doing another 60ha. “The deer have consistently rewarded us but most years the sheep have not rewarded us enough. “The irony is, in having our best wool ever, we will get the worst payout this year.” The Matthews family also won the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Livestock Award.
The Matthews family believe the deer industry has a very positive future

Top of the Rangers announced by Andy Bryenton
Ford’s American customers have long enjoyed a big range of pickup trucks from the company’s Detroit factories — icons since the 1950s, in fact. But there are plenty of Statesiders who are looking enviously outside their own borders at what’s on offer here downunder. And the object of that scrutiny is the highly popular Ranger ute. Semantics aside, the difference between our Ranger ute and their F150 pickup truck is basically one of size. Like most All-American pickups, the big Ford is generously proportioned, and armed with a hefty V8 powerplant under the hood. The recipe is simple but effective — there are millions of F150s on the road, and, like the Ranger is in New Zealand, they’re top of the automotive food chain. American customers will get their wish in 2019, however, as the new Ranger — a truly global next generation of Ford’s super-ute comes to their shores. For a whole swag of reasons, not the least of which is a more compact size and more refined road manners, Ford are rightly convinced that they’re onto a winner.
Certainly, American writers who have tested the Ranger here and in Oz have loved what they’ve seen. But Ford are being more generous to us, perhaps, than they are to their own countrymen. Because before a new Ranger breaks cover for worldwide release, the current shape is about to get a serious shot in the arm. Ford have announced the new Ranger Raptor with a video showing full-noise off-road racing antics in the Australian outback. But this alone is not the appeal. The name itself is a family tiein to the F150 Raptor, and that machine is a snarling beast. Able to power across the badlands of the Wild West like a Baja trophy truck or a very low flying missile, the Raptor name means power. And

Trans-pacific partnership — the Raptor name comes to New Zealand before the Ranger brand hits America
that means we’re very, very interested in what the Ranger Raptor has under the hood. Sage nods and winks among petrolheads abound, with many guessing that this ultimate Ranger will pack the full fury of the new Mustang’s V8, maybe with forced-induction magic bolted on. Others look at the mad, brilliant Focus RS and wonder if motorsport legend Ken

Razor sharp precision by Andy Bryenton
When Husqvarna approached the drawing board in 1987 to develop a brand new concept in mowing, their inspiration came from customer’s feedback. How can we turn ‘on a dime’ to tackle tight spots, even with a big ride-on mower? How can we follow the contours of the ground and let the driver see exactly what he’s cutting? The answer came from a panel of engineers, but you can see one of the obvious inspirations in the design of the Husqvarna Rider series, which turns 30 this month. Those triple blade cutting heads out front, all mounted on a suspension-loaded carrier? This machine has the look and the precision of a men’s electric shaver, another device designed to clear away unwanted overgrowth for a neat, clean finish. Another inspiration was surely the construction industry. Placing the engine in its own pod to the rear, then articulating the centre or ‘waist’ of the machine has long been a trick for big earthmovers to enable even multi-ton machines to turn in a small radius. The chief designer says he saw this first on a child’s toy of a tractor-harvester. By applying this design to a mower, Husqvarna made it possible to turn in the length of the machine itself. And with the cutting deck out front, suspended where it can be seen and equipped with guide wheels, the operator can spot exactly where the blades are

going, unlike on a conventional lawn tractor. An added bonus of this design is the ease with which the whole blade carrier can be popped up and out to get hosed down after use. Over the years, additions such as power steering, all-wheel drive and automatic transmission have been factored in, making this one of the most stable, comfortable ways to mow a large area of grass. Lifestyle block owners especially have taken to the ease of
operation afforded by the Rider series — a big back yard with its ornamental trees, benches, barbecue areas and other obstacles is very different from a football field or a paddock, and it’s a kind of terrain where that turning precision shines through. Three decades on, Husqvarna still set the benchmark for innovative front-mount mowing. And they’re even developing entirely electric models for the future.

THE RECORD
FANCY FOX’S
Grooming
When Leanne Papps gained her master dog groomer qualification she was just 21, the youngest person to do so – a record which still stands in New Zealand. These days Leanne can be found at 157 Michael Street, Rakaia, running her own grooming business, Fancy Fox’s Grooming. The business takes its name from her sevenyear-old son, Fox. To gain her master groomer qualification, Leanne had to complete a minimum of a four year apprenticeship and pass examinations, both practical and theoretical, as well as attending seminars. She spent six years with one of New Zealand’s top groomers, Verna Holland, of North Canterbury. Encouraged to enter national competitions run by the National Dog Groomers’ Assocation of New Zealand, Leanne has notched up successes. She has won a hand stripping class at national level and was third in the bichon hand scissor class. Her goal remains to win the top title of groomer of the year. “The association is a tight-knit community
FANCY FOX’S
and people are willing to share their knowledge,” Leanne said. She has a background in dog training and studied veterinarian nursing through Otago Polytechnic. She has competed in dog agility and behavioural problems training and has 16 years experience in the grooming industry. Leanne offers a full range of grooming services. While willing to groom any breed of dog, her speciality is bichons, poodles and terriers. She also grooms cats. She has worked with aggressive and timid dogs and in her grooming career, has never had to sedate a dog to be able to groom them. The best way to get a dog comfortable with grooming is to start them early, Leanne said, bringing them in from 12 weeks of age. To encourage this, Leanne offers free grooming for puppies until they are five months old and half price grooming for all new customers’ first booking. Her skill, as well as competitive prices, means she has many regular clients calling at her rural property.
Grooming
Fancy Fox’s Grooming operates from a converted garage. The rural outlook means it is a relaxing, quiet environment for the dogs. With grooming tables, a purpose built bath and high-pressure shower and good lighting, the room is practical and versatile. There is plenty of room for cages of various sizes to hold the dogs while they wait for their pampering. Much of the work in converting the garage to a grooming room was done by Leanne’s partner, Allan, and she is very grateful for his help. Leanne is passing on her knowledge to Roxanne Sloper who is training to be a groomer. Roxanne works with Leanne two days a week and will also eventually begin her training with the national association. Fancy Fox’s Grooming operates seven days a week and with late nights, to suit customers’ requirements. Bookings can be made by telephone, text messaging or through its Facebook page. Every effort is made to set an appointment which is convenient to the client.
