Hororata’s mechanical swap meet

 by Ann van Engelen

Saturday, September 21 marks the 10th anniversary of the Mechanical Only Swap Meet held at the Hororata Domain from 7am to 1pm.

Darfield Urban and Rural Fire Brigade is holding an open day on Saturday, September 21 from 11am to 2pm.

“We hold open days to let the community connect with us and see what we are about and how we work,” says chief fire officer Alan Kittelty “It is a good opportunity for children to see our fire appliances and meet the team so that if they ever need us, they are familiar with who we are There will be a variety of demonstrations and visitors can explore the fire trucks and equipment ” Home fire safety advice and teaching material will be available on the day “Darfield has a rural and urban team, and we are always looking for volunteers to join The crews now

The event is organised by locals, John and Dave, who saw a need for a vintage, veteran, classic cars, motorcycles, parts, tools and mechanical related stuff event “We wanted to cater for mechanical parts only because most swap meets have gone off track and become overgrown garage sales with bric-a-brac and unrelated items,” says organiser John Foster “The event has been well supported over the years, and we have approximately 50 sites with vintage and classic parts available ” The first two years the fire brigade were the volunteers, then the Hororata school swimming club St John’s Church, the Hororata Historical Society and others have contributed in making the day a success and have been the benefactors of some of the proceeds for their work during the years “Jason Kupe’s famous butcher’s pie and Bazza’s Sunshine bacon butties will be available on site along with drinks This year some of the proceeds will support St John’s Church and Terrace Station Charitable Trust,” says John “It is a small event and has become very popular with some

Long service recognised  by Mike Isle

One of Canterbury’s longest-serving volunteer fire officers passed a major milestone last month when he was awarded his 50-Year Service Medal. Lloyd Clausen, who is the Leeston Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer, joined the brigade in 1968 while still at school “I obviously couldn’t turn out when I was at school,” he recalls “However, I turned out at all other times ” Mr Clausen said the motivation to join was his family’s long-time involvement with the brigade “My grandfather Frank and father Bertram were both in the brigade When dad was in the brigade, he ended up doing 42 years before he retired “My brother Grant also joined the brigade, and he has done close to 40 years ” Despite the passage of time, Mr Clausen can remember his first callout, a chimney fire in Brookside Other more recent call-outs have passed from memory There have been so many of them However, one that is sharply edged in his memory was a “massive” bush fire in Nimmo’s that started on Waitangi Day 1990 and went on for a month “At one stage, we had an appliance there for over a week, running 24/7 ” Mr Clausen’s boss, Canterbury Area Commander Dave Berry told The Record: “The community owes Lloyd a huge debt

 The already highly decorated Lloyd Clausen receives yet another honour

of gratitude not only for his service as a fire officer but also for the work he does in the community ” Lloyd Clausen is the chair of the Leeston Community Committee and is on the area committee for St John and manages one of the swimming pools in Leeston He has lived in Leeston all his life The 65-year-old has no plans for immediate retirement, though he does admit to enjoying those times he gets to read and spend with family 

In the last year, nearly 35,000 passengers have collectively been driven more than 623,000 kilometres “Having a dignified and affordable means of transport is so crucial in allowing people to remain in their own homes and to maintain their community links, so we are pleased to offer our continued support to community vehicle trusts,” says community transport adviser Isabelle Bromham Raegan Kitto, clinical manager of Social Work for Older Persons Health,

A weighty matter Does my butt look big in this? Since when did my chin have so many mates? Who shrunk my belt! These issues are not restricted to humans. Our pets feel the burn (or lack thereof) too! About 30% of pets worldwide are obese. Did you know that overweight animals are more likely to suffer from a reduced life span, arthritis, heart and respiratory issues, liver disease, diabetes, reproductive problems, certain cancers, skin problems, be less playful and suffer thyroid disorders — just to name a few! VetEnt Darfield hosts weight loss clinics, contact 03 318 8611 for further info. You can prevent/correct this disease with these basic steps. Firstly, know the ideal weight for the age, sex, and breed of your animal. Look it up! Next, weigh your animal at the clinic and while you’re there ask about which food is best for your pet. If you are within five per cent — then great! Stick to the feeding amount advised for that weight on the back of your pet food and don’t feed any human food treats. These are usually the culprit for those extra unwanted calories. Keep the daily exercise up and enjoy the benefits of a healthy pet. However, what if my pet is overweight, you say? Calculate the percentage overweight by dividing your dog’s current weight by its ideal weight, minus one from the value and then multiply it by 100. Aim to lose one or two per cent of this weight per week. Now you have a realistic idea of how long getting to the ideal weight will take! For example, a 16% overweight animal will take eight to 16 weeks. How to lose the weight? It’s simple, be disciplined, be consistent and do not give up! You can do it. Look at the amount of food advised for the ideal body weight (Not its current weight) on your dog food packet. Feed two-thirds of this amount a day; split this amount into two or three meals and ration animals individually. Do not give any treats,

no matter how tempted you are! None! Use affection as a reward instead. Keep up the daily exercise, and do fortnightly or monthly weigh-ins to monitor progress. Once your pet’s weight is ideal, you can feed the full maintenance amount. No progress after four

weeks? Consult your vet; your pet may need a blood test to rule out underlying disease. We believe in you! Have a fantastic week. With regards, the VetEnt team. Note. It is advised to have a health check before starting the restricted feed diet.

Pets & Equine ADVERTORIAL

Alpacas with personality Established in 1999 by Lindsay and Sheryl Riddle, the delightful Sherlin Alpaca stud farm is sited on 22 hectares of land between West Melton and Templeton. Starting with five alpacas the couple gradually increased their herd, and they now have around 300 head, from which they breed to sell stock and shear the fibre for making alpaca products. They carry the two alpaca breeds: the Huacaya, which has a coat like a sheep fleece, and Suri, which has a fleece like dreadlocks. Both breeds come in all the alpaca colours — black, brown, fawn, grey and white. Lindsay says alpacas are easy to care for, have personality, and make ideal pets for a lifestyle block. They eat grass when it’s plentiful and meadow hay, Lucerne baleage or Lucerne chaff in the winter. The young alpacas are halter trained at Sherlin so they can be taken for walks. For anyone interested in acquiring two or more animals, Lindsay and Sheryl will provide all the necessary advice on their care and requirements. “We like to get to know the people who are looking to buy alpacas, and we explain how and why we got into breeding them and what they can expect,” Lindsay says. Sherlin Alpaca offers farm tours, during which visitors can see the alpacas and handfeed them. They also have a shop with a wide selection of alpaca-orientated products on display. These include items hand-knitted by Sheryl such as clothes for babies and children up to five years of age. They design and make their own thermal socks, which are very popular,

Lifestyles ‘n’ Farming PROGRESSING THE ELECTRIC FENCE by Ann van Engelen Alex Macmillan is a beef cattle farmer and to help life on farms and lifestyle blocks be easier, he has developed a game-changing device for electric tape gateways.

“I am appreciative of the companies that created the current designs of gate tape handles, but they eventually fail for a number of reasons I always felt there had to be a better way to operate gateways that are controlled by electric tapes,” says Alex “Rather than complaining, I designed a bullet-proof model — based on my observations over the decades of my farming career to helping advance the industry My sturdy gateway hinge spring uses marine-grade stainless steel, which won’t rust and is the first of its kind in New Zealand ”

The 81-year-old was a member of NZ Young Farmers in the 1950s and has decided to donate a portion of all sale proceeds to the organisation “In the early 1960s, I got a job working for the Milk Marketing Board in the United Kingdom as an artificial insemination technician and was the youngest technician they ever employed When I returned home, I spent more than four decades working for the Livestock Improvement Corporation as an AI technician One of my biggest days involved inseminating cows in 29 herds, and I travelled more than 209km that day

getting off-farm on for various activities and knew our way around a dance floor regularly attending Saturday night dances in local halls “It was fun, and people need to do it now days too for time out and get away from it all

Alex Macmillan with his son Michael has launched Alex’s invention helping farmers with electric tape gateways “I want to support NZ Young Farmers and help the next generation reach their goals The organisation helps to nurture young people, and I personally received immense benefits from being a member when I was young “A number of my devices will be installed in the near future at the Auckland dairy farm gifted to NZ Young Farmers by the late Donald Pearson We have also had considerable interest from farmers in coastal areas who are tired of replacing their current gate components every couple of years due to rust ” The Lomacs gateway hinge spring will solve this problem and other issues The unique gateway hinge spring is being marketed by Lomacs New Zealand “Dad’s invention is permanently mounted on a post and all of the

componentry, apart from the plastic anchor, is marine-grade stainless steel It should last a lifetime and save money, frustration and broken gateways along the way,” said Alex’s son Michael Macmillan, a director of Lomacs New Zealand “He has dedicated his life to the agriculture sector, and this product is different from anything else on the market It is a significant cost when every three to four years you are replacing the current product It is more environmentally friendly with no plastic in the mechanism “The swivel design allows it to move from side to side — essentially eliminating damage It gives a consistent spring compression on the tape attachment every time so it shouldn’t

Farming beef cattle means Alex uses electric fences on a daily basis and his inventions help keep costs down stretch beyond the barrel The barrel is protected from contamination such as mud, organic matter and water and being permanently attached removes the risk of someone running over the unit More information can be found on our lomacs nz website “Dad’s invention has been selected as a finalist in the NZ Best Design Awards, and I am looking forward to hitting the road to attend NZYF club meetings to discuss and promote my father’s invention ”
