Celebrating the golden years

There’s great news for those over 65 in today’s society …

The St John Selwyn Central Area Committee will mark the official opening of the $650,000 project with an open day on Sunday, October 1. The new station provides a three-bay garage for vehicles and a building for staff, which also comprises a training area and community meeting room, on the corner of Kidman Street and Norman Kirk Drive. Committee chair John Sunckell said he’s pretty excited to be able to open the new facility. “As Selwyn has grown, in particular from

West Melton, through Rolleston and across to Lincoln we have had to find a way to better service the emergency medical needs of our community,” Mr Sunckell said. “One only has to look at the traffic in and out of Selwyn morning and night and the increasing difficulty traversing the district to recognise this population growth. The Rolleston station not only services the needs of West Melton, Rolleston, Springston and Lincoln, but also provides paramedic support to

St John volunteer stations in Leeston and Darfield and on out into the wider hinterland of Selwyn. “The new station is not just a base for our ambulances and staff but also provides meeting and training rooms. “Our St John youth programme is very strong in Rolleston with approximately 50 penguins and cadets regularly attending, learning community and life skills, and as they get older first aid and leadership.” continued on page 3 …

Construction of the new community and recreation centre on West Melton Domain is expected to begin at the end of this month and take about 11 months to complete. West Melton Community and Recreation Centre Committee chair, Bruce Russell, said the blessing was an opportunity for the community to celebrate the hard work that has gone into making the new facility a reality. “I’m really proud of the way West Melton residents got behind this project and helped this four-year project come to fruition,” Mr Russell said. “We received a Rata Foundation grant of $250,000 and the community itself raised $120,000 towards the new facility. “The Committee is absolutely delighted to see construction begin on a modern facility that our growing community deserves to have.” The multipurpose community and recreation facility will help to ease the

pressure facing local community and sporting groups, and replaces the old community hall which sustained damage in the 2010 earthquake. In addition to the recreational facilities such as a full-size indoor sports court which can be used for a number of activities including basketball, netball, badminton and futsal, the new facility will also accommodate gymnastics and dance as well as have a number of community use rooms, including a large digital seminar and learning suite. The new centre will be the new base for Plunket, the West Melton Scout group and the West Melton Playcentre. The new building will be able to hold around 550 people and will also be available to corporate and private groups for hire. ¢

Initially the station will house a front line ambulance, a first response unit and a transfer vehicle but can also take a second frontline unit if needed in the future. Mr Sunckell said the opening ceremony is their chance to thank and recognise the Selwyn community for their ongoing support of the project. “Of special significance are the contributions of the Selwyn District Council, Generation Homes for their ‘no charge’ project management, Rata Foundation for its early financial support and Pub Charity for providing the cornerstones for the project. “This early support allowed the community to come in behind us and to make at times

significant donations. Significance is relative, whether it be two dollars of pocket money from a child or a five figure sum from a business or an individual, we value them all equally. “The job is not yet done, with loans of $165,000 to repay and ongoing operational levies and costs approaching $200,000 per annum we need the continued support of our community,” Mr Sunckell said. The whole community is invited to the opening, at 1.30pm on Sunday, October 1. The station will be open to the public right throughout the afternoon for people to drop in and view the new facility. ¢

Survey shows satisfaction increasing

Speaking out

Residents’ satisfaction with Selwyn District Council’s overall performance has increased for the fourth consecutive year according to figures released by the council.

p Rolleston residents along with others from around the district seem to be giving the district council a pass mark according to a new survey p Daisy M, left, and Kaitlyn A were the West Melton School representatives in the final of the Ellesmere Speech Competition held at Prebbleton School recently. The pair was chosen after winning their respective school year in the West Melton School’s a competition. Kaitlyn spoke about ‘Lying’ in the Y7 category, while Daisy spoke about ‘Brothers’ in the Y8 category. The speeches had to be between two-and-a-half to three minutes with the contestants choosing their topic for a persuasive speech. There were 12 other schools competing from the wider Ellesmere region. Daisy was awarded first place for her speech. Photo by Kathryn Meyers

In the council’s latest residents’ opinion survey, 70% of respondents rated the Council’s overall performance as good or very good – an increase of 5% from 2016. This continues a longterm trend which has seen the overall performance rating rise steadily from 58% in 2013. Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said the continuing increase in the overall performance rating is a positive signal from the community. “This survey provides us with valuable feedback on how we’re doing each year,” he said. “It’s encouraging to see that residents generally see our overall performance improving over time, and that most

people really enjoy living in Selwyn. “However the survey also points out areas where we need to continue improving services, particularly our rural roading network. “It’s important that we listen to residents’ views, and these results will be taken into account as the Council works on priorities for our next 10year plan.” The survey was carried out in June and July by Research First, and surveyed 411 people to provide a statistically representative sample of Selwyn’s population. The survey showed that 91% of residents think Selwyn is a great place to live, slightly down on last year’s 94% but up on 90% recorded in 2015. ¢

Show attracts overseas judges

Selwyn tertiary scholarships open

Livestock and equestrian judges from across the globe will descend on Christchurch in mid-November as New Zealand’s largest A&P Show turns 155 years old.

Applications are now open for pupils from local secondary schools to apply for a Selwyn District Council tertiary scholarship. Council awards a total of six scholarships each year to two pupils in year 12 or 13 at Darfield High School, Ellesmere College and Lincoln High School. The scholarship offers $3,000 to each student, assisting them to take up further education at a university, polytechnic or accredited state or private institution, on a full-time course of study which benefits the wider community. Selwyn mayor Sam Broughton said council is pleased to be able to support young leaders in Selwyn. “The scholarship programme is a really practical way council can encourage students to pursue their education opportunities,” he said. “It’s exciting to be able to help them along their learning journey, knowing their families and community will also benefit in the long term.” Applicants are judged on their contribution to the school and

community, their attitude and academic ability. Decisions on applications are made by a panel including the relevant school principal (or their representative) and two council representatives, either local ward councillors or a ward councillor and the chair of the local community board. Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents who live in Selwyn. The applications are announced and awarded at end of year school prizegiving awards. Last year’s scholarship recipients were Hannah Long and Duncan Finlayson from Lincoln High School, Cassian Duthie and Brionne Fleming from Ellesmere College and Emily De Rooy and Kathryn Barnhill from Darfield High School. To find out more about the scholarships, including application forms and scholarship closing dates, students should contact their school.

p Judges are a vital part of any A&P Show

Over 500 people volunteer at the Canterbury A&P Show every year and around 120 of those volunteers are judges, with some coming from as far as the USA in 2017. Canterbur y A&P Association President, Peter Gilbert, said the calibre of judges is one of the reasons the Canterbury A&P Show is seen as New Zealand’s most prestigious A&P event.

“Bringing these judges in from overseas is a huge draw card for our competitors,” Mr Gilbert said. “Not only do they bring extensive international experience, it’s also extra confirmation for our competitors that their stock is the best of the best as they’re being judged by someone completely new.” This year the show will host a Royal A&P Dairy Cattle Event, which has prompted the appointment of Mark Rueth from Wisconsin, USA. Mark owns Rosedale Genetics, has sold embryos in ten countries and has judged at top level shows and expos in the USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil, France, Switzerland and Mexico. He also currently serves on the World Dairy Cattle Show Committee. Peter Gilbert said that It’s not just the overseas judges who bring a wealth of knowledge to the event. “We also have judges coming from across New Zealand, many of whom have decades of experience both here and overseas. We can’t thank them enough for lending their time and expertise.” The 2017 event is from 15 to 17 November at Canterbury Agricultural Park and $100,000 of prizes are up for grabs across 3,000 classes with 6,500 entries expected. ¢

Judge for Darfield Artweek u by Kent Caddick

Rangiora High School art teacher Jan Robertson will be the judge for this year’s Darfield Artweek which is run by the Malvern Community Arts Council. Darfield Artweek will run from Friday, October 6 through to Sunday, October 15, utilising three venues: the Darfield Recreation Centre, which will also host the opening night, the Selwyn Gallery, and the Darfield Library. Ms Robertson is an accomplished artist, and has taught art at Rangiora High School for the past 20 years. She began to study painting and sculpture seriously as an adult student in her late 30s and earned a Bachelor of Fine Art degree, majoring in sculpture, from the Canterbury School of Fine Arts in 1998. She has also studied under the renowned New Zealand sculptor, Andrew Drummond. “My sculpture practise is heavily influenced by the use of found materials, which have age or history attached to them,” Ms Robertson said. Some of her more recent work uses children’s wooden building blocks. “The idea of stacking and rebuilding is a rather nice connection to that which Canterbury is experiencing so some of my sculptural compositions have architectural references as well as reflecting a more domestic quality,” she said. Jan Robertson’s work has been on exhibit regularly at the Chamber Gallery in Rangiora and most recently at the

The new trial hours, which come into force on Monday, October 23, have been developed in response to residents’ requests for improved access to library services. Last year the libraries team conducted surveys and assessed usage and peak times for each of the four libraries, at Rolleston, Darfield, Leeston and Lincoln, to assess community need. Further consultation was then carried out earlier this year as part of the draft annual plan. Selwyn District Libraries Manager, Vicki Carlyon said public feedback supported the idea of extended hours. “Each of the four libraries have unique proposed hours. This will

She said the first Saturday of the new trial hours, on October 28 will include exciting launch events. New Zealanders have always used wood for our one and two storey homes. But now, architects can specify modern timber fabrication to previously impossible heights. Cross Laminated Timber (super plywood) can make equally strong construction as other traditional high-rise materials. Engineered wood is also lighter, quicker and quieter to build with, flexible in quakes, renewable, locally grown, fire resistant and locks up surplus atmospheric carbon. All we need now is for our government to recognise these qualities with a wood-encouragment construction policy.

Positive Aging Expo

Celebrating the golden years u by Andy Bryenton

There’s great news for those over 65 in today’s society — we’re not only living longer than ever before thanks to advancements in medicine and science, but we’re also able to expect more ‘life in your years’ — more activity, more engagement with the community and more things to see and do to make the retirement years an adventure. Celebrating this fact — and the valuable contribution of older citizens to the world — is the International Day of the Older Person, falling this year on October 2nd. Coinciding with this worldwide day of acknowledgement and respect for our elders comes another tradition, this one more localised. The 11th annual Positive Aging Expo is about to kick off in Papanui, filling the central high school with exhibits that are all about quality of life and healthy options for our over 65’s. Age Concern Canterbury are joining forces with a wealth of experts and businesses to present a day of education and new choices, showcasing the best ways to enjoy a better retirement. No matter your age, the message is clear — you’re never too old to get the most out of life! As in previous years, there

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

will be interactive displays and advice on a broad spectrum of topics, from nutrition to fitness, hobbies and clubs to engage with, transport and the freedom of mobility, safety, recreation and more. From 9am through to 2.30pm the high school’s assembly hall will become a place of information and education not for our youngest citizens but for our most experienced, in a powerful metaphor for another keystone of the expo — life long learning. Come along and get involved, there’s so much to see and do, and great news to take on board about how to make the golden years a great time to be alive. In fact, the organisers extend a warm invitation to the whole family to celebrate the International Day of the Older Person in a way which carries on its message throughout the year. ¢

Pollen season nothing to sneeze at u by Andy Bryenton

Spring brings with it the threat of high pollen counts, and humans with allergies prepare themselves for the inevitable sneezing and other annoying symptoms by stocking up on antihistamines and other patent cures. But what about the effect of airborne pollens and other plant-based allergies for our companion animals? Cats and dogs may not exhibit the same symptoms as we do if they are allergic to the effects of spring on our natural environment. Rather than sneezing, they are more likely to find pollen irritating to their sensitive skin. This is especially true of areas such as the base of the tail, paw pads and ears. You may notice your pets

scratching or worrying at the fur at these points during spring, and an excess of this behaviour can have serious knock-on effects. Too much irritation combined with scratching, screwing or abrasion can lead to broken skin, with the attendant risk of infection. There can be more subtle cues as well. Just like in humans, the sinuses

and throat are a prime area for pollen irritation. If your dog has begun coughing or snoring while asleep, this may be caused by pollen allergies. Both dogs and cats can be put off their food by allergic reactions, and suffer from stomach upsets. You may also notice an aversion to going outside, which clashes with the usual behaviour of companion animals on a sunny spring day. Check for reddening, broken skin, swelling or irritation at those sensitive points — paw pads, ears, tail — and if you can eliminate fleas as the cause,

then it’s possible your pet is allergic to an environmental stimulus. If it’s only a minor problem, you can try wiping down your pet’s coat with a damp cloth several times a day, or consult your vet about products to soothe away the itches and pains. Of course, for severe allergies, it’s vital to visit a qualified veterinarian for some medical assistance. Spring should be a time to enjoy the outdoors, both for us and our animal companions. With a little input from your local vet your whole family can take advantage of the good weather, pets and all. ¢

Spring care from an ancient profession

ALI CATS CATTERY

u by Andy Bryenton

Spring is a time of intense activity in the equine world, as the blankets are packed away and green grass replaces hay on the menu. But it’s also a season of soggy pastures and mud, coinciding with the time of year when riders want to get out and about with their horses. This means keeping a careful eye on hoof care, and a call to the local farrier for some timely assistance. Farriers represent one of the oldest professions still in practice — even the modern guild of farriers in England dates to 1365. There are pictures and mosaics of farriers plying their craft back into antiquity, and the reason is clearly apparent in springtime — a horse is only as active and healthy as its hooves allow. To prevent bacterial infections it’s often necessary to pick out foreign objects daily in springtime, while also paying careful attention to mud which can build up on a horse’s lower legs and cause skin irritations. Farriers must undertake four years of training to carry the title of their profession, and this gives them an in-depth knowledge of the ailments which can afflict equine hooves. It also helps them determine just what needs to be done to deliver optimum movement, happiness and hoof health in different seasons. After a shoeless winter it may be necessary for the farrier to make a detailed assessment, then trim the hoof and go on to select or even forge exactly the right shoe. Some are practical, while others are actively therapeutic — another role the farrier must assume is that of a healer by way of his or her craft. This can be remedial, preventative or stretch to the truly miraculous, giving horses a literal new lease of life. There’s a reason a horseshoe above a doorway means good luck — it’s an ancient mark of respect for a craft that’s been preventing mishaps and disasters in rural communities for centuries. Evolved over millions of years to provide the perfect balance and support for one of nature’s most powerful

running ‘machines’, the horse’s hoof is a complex and finely tuned structure as unique and purposeful as the human eye and brain. Farriers may work with medievalseeming hammers, anvils and fire, but that’s simply part of a long tradition. In many ways, they are right up with the state of the equine health art, as focussed as a human podiatrist working with an olympic marathon runner for great results. Remember to call your local farrier early in spring to allow time for new shoes to wear in before a busy and enjoyable summer of riding. ¢

here are six boys in our family and we grew up on this farm from 1988,” says Regan. “Our father died in 2006 and the farm was put into an estate which currently my older brother leases and I manage for him. We run lamb, beef and crop on the main property and four years ago my wife Samm and I bought a few sows to have an interest of our own.

The couple needed something that complemented what is already happening on the farm and pigs ticked all the boxes. “My father and grandfather had a small dairy farm in Oxford with around 12 cows and supplied cream to the local dairy. They had the skim milk byproduct so they kept pigs to feed this to and they sold weaners at the Addington saleyards.

When we started we didn’t have a clear goal of where we wanted to go. Through media and consumers we realised there was a shortage for ethically grown organic pork so we started buying beef and lamb from the farm and we sell mixed meat packs under the trading name ‘Elmwood Organic’.” The couple have been selling and delivering meat packs to families in the

We lease a four hectare paddock from the farm and buy barley as feed from the property as well.” They grow linseed for a company in Geraldine and buy the linseed cake back as a protein feed instead of using fish meal or soy which large commercial operations generally use. “It means what we grow ends up back in our soil.

They all have names and they can wallow in mud and play and interact with the other pigs and with us. They really are intelligent animals. “Even with the electric fence they are quite good at ‘houdini’ acts. They know the grass really is greener on the other side and learn very quickly if there is a way to get into another area. “It takes about four months to graze each turnip strip and they get excited when they change paddocks and love digging for worms and grubs in the ground. If they are in a paddock where there are cow pats, they will flip the pat over and have a gourmet feed of worms and bugs.” Their housing is linseed straw bales arranged on the ground, and each hut has an iron roof and straw is placed inside for bedding. “Eventually the straw rots down and we replace the bales and reuse the iron roofs. There are two to three pigs housed per hut as they love company and when they snuggle in at night they are like bunches of bananas,” says Samm. “Effectively we have two litters of approximately 8-10 piglets per sow per year. It takes around six months for them to get to 70-80kg because we don’t feed a formulated feed like commercial farms. “The longer they live, the more flavour the meat has.” Lifestyle block owners buy piglets and feed them from their vege garden and they eat lawn clippings as well. “We also have hens for eggs and they are in with the pigs and can eat
