The Selwyn District Council has given its official seal of approval for the youth council, which was formed following a District Youth Forum in May. Its members will work with the district council to provide a youth perspective on a range of issues, and will develop submissions on matters of interest to young people. Youth council chairperson Tristan Misselbrook of Lincoln High School said with 18% of Selwyn's population aged between 12 and 24 years they are really excited about the formation of the council. “We want to make sure that young people's views are heard in our district." The council is made up of 11 young people aged  The Selwyn Youth Council, from left: Tristan Misselbrook, Councillor Sam Broughton, Rafael Clarke, Heather Neill, Melissa Moore and Michael Anderson (front centre), Sarah Pascall, Daniel Moore, Brock Hatton, George Steel between 14 and 24 who live and Craig Steven. in Selwyn, and two youth worker representatives.  Not only is Barrie Hardy the local school bus driver, as former owner of the Windwhistle Garage he’s a handy bloke to have at school demonstrating how electricity works. Recently Barrie showed Windwhistle school students how to make a spark using a car battery and an old buzz box from a Model T. He also made electricity pass through a lead pencil, and a spark jump through a piece of paper, making the paper catch fire. The demonstrations proved a great drawcard for students who were told not to try what they saw at home.

Consultant all ears on new schools for Rolleston  by Kent Caddick

The Ministry of Education will kick off its consultation on new schools for Rolleston with the first of three public meetings with ministry appointed consultant Michael Deaker in Weedons this week. The ministry is set to open a new primary school in the Selwyn township in 2016 with a new secondary school slated to open the following year. Mr Deaker said while they have an idea on the possible sites for the schools he wants to hear from local residents on the structure and design of the new schools. “There could be new stand-alone primary and secondary schools, or the new primary or secondary provision could operate as an extension of an existing school or there could be opportunities for shared governance and facilities. “For example, Lincoln High School could become a senior school while the new Rolleston high school could become a junior college. “The ministry has not made up its mind on what shape the schools will take and I can assure you the

feedback I get from the public will definitely be listened to and taken into account before a decision is made.” The first public meeting takes place at Weedons School Hall on Wednesday from 7pm. The second will be held at the Lincoln Events Centre on October 9, between 7pm and 8.30pm while the third and final public meeting is set down for the Rolleston Community Centre on October 17, from 7pm until 9.30pm. Mr Deaker will also be on hand at a number of Rolleston Town Centre Masterplan drop-in meetings in September and October. “This is an exciting opportunity for the whole community and parents to contribute innovative ideas and have input into what the new schooling options could look like. The community can play an important role in shaping future education in Rolleston.”

Liquor and food licences on the rise Selwyn’s population boom, a growing number of cafes, and more events in the district are keeping the Selwyn District Council busy carrying out food and liquor licensing. The number of venues with a food or health licence in Selwyn has increased by 24% over the past four years, while the number of liquor licences issued by the Council has increased by 39% since 2009. Council’s Environmental Services Manager John Christensen says the increase in liquor licences is due to both an increase in the number of special licences issued and more people holding a manager or club manager licence. A special licence is needed for an event where alcohol is for sale or when a venue wants to serve alcohol outside of the terms of its liquor licence. “The increase in the number of special licences reflects the fact that there are now many more events happening in Selwyn than there were a few years ago,” Christensen says. “Many of the venues in Christchurch that used to cater for functions are no longer open following the earthquakes and more functions and events are now hosted in Selwyn. This is good news for our district’s economy.” Council regularly inspects venues with food and liquor licences to make sure they are operating safely. A controlled purchase operation was carried out by the Police in Selwyn recently involving 15 and 16 year olds attempting to purchase alcohol without ID. This operation found that none of the 13 venues that were visited sold alcohol to minors. 

Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe said the survey results confirmed that Selwyn is a great place to live and that local residents do a good job of making others feel welcome. "There are many newcomers in our district and most of the people I talk to say they really enjoy living here and find the community very friendly," he said. The most common reasons why people moved to Selwyn according to the survey were because they liked the rural lifestyle or the quality of life (20%), for marriage or family reasons (19%),

The theme for this year’s 143rd Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association is ‘Off the Sheep’s Back.’ Each year the president of the association chooses a theme for the show and not surprisingly President Warwick Boon has chosen the wooly animals for this year’s show. Warwick farms in partnership with his wife Amanda on a 250ha sheep farm in Killinchy. He joined the committee of the

Ellesmere A&P Association in 1995 and served as head of the sheep section for four years before becoming junior vice president. But his association with the Ellesmere Show started well before then, as his father, the late Selwyn Boon, was president in 1980, so Warwick was involved in many working bees at the showgrounds before he joined the committee. This year’s show will be held on October 19 at the Ellesmere A&P

Showgrounds on the outskirts of the Leeston. The Ellesmere A&P Association is a not-for-profit organisation and is responsible for organising and staging the Ellesmere A&P Show as well as other activities throughout the year. The association is run by a committee of up to 30 elected members. Some of the committee members are second or third generation, with their fathers and grandfathers having being active committee members. 

Rolleston electrical business wins gold  by Kent Caddick

Laser Electrical Rolleston has been awarded a gold award for outstanding growth at the recent trans Tasman Laser Group awards held in Auckland. The gold award is given to the Laser business with the highest increase in revenue and profit over the last two years. Laser Electrical Rolleston’s branch manager Zane Adams said he was stoked with the award. “We have a great team and they have all worked so hard. Winning this award is testament of the long hours and dedication we all have to building a good business and providing the local

community a service to be proud of." Laser Electrical was established in Rolleston in 2008 by Brent and Megan Christie and has seen phenomenal growth since appointing Zane Adams as branch manager in April 2012. Initially based in a portacom on an empty section on Johns Road with only one tradesman, the business now has a staff of nine and a purposebuilt workshop with a lighting showroom due to be completed by Christmas. 

Airfield an asset to West Melton community

7

 by Sue Grundy

Other than a road sign on the Old West Coast Road/Weedons Ross Road corner, there is little evidence in West Melton that there is a flight training hub and business running at an airfield not far from the Waimakariri River. Now a carefully maintained and professionally operated airfield is the envy of many other flight training schools around New Zealand. Aero Club CEO Peter Randle sees at least a two-fold benefit — a rural, privately owned training ground for pilot members and also a community asset as a search and rescue base to support emergency responses to accidents and natural disasters. “We’ve invested a lot of money in hangars, the club rooms, sealing the main runway and maintaining six runways altogether,” he says. “Because it’s a private airfield we control its use so that we are good neighbours. We don’t fly over built-up areas and there is no night flying.” Currently student pilots from 12 different countries as well as New Zealand are learning to fly. Some do so for recreation and a passion for flying and complete their licences

through the aero club. Others who are aiming for careers in airlines train through the club’s subsidiary, the International Aviation Academy of New Zealand (IAANZ). It’s a happy mix. “The airfield is maintained by volunteers who take pride in their club, the student pilots appreciate their efforts and join in the social atmosphere of a rural base,” club president Paul Drake says. He is proud of the club’s passionfor-flying and friendly culture which has allowed him to include family and friends in his own flying activities. Once every two months the club holds competition flying at West Melton. Landing, forced landing, precision flying, liferaft dropping, navigation and many other forms of flying are designed for student and licenced pilots. During the week training is busy with career students being put through their

 West Melton Aero: An aerial view of the West Melton airfield

paces both on the ground for theory and in the air. On Saturdays, instructors work with members who fly for the love of their sport and hobby, keeping them current or teaching them the requisite skills for a private pilot’s licence. The club’s academy brings in millions of dollars worth of export earnings by training international students who return home with a highly regarded New

Zealand Commercial Pilot’s licence. International students and local members alike will make great use of West Melton shops as the area develops, Mr Randle says. “All in all, our wonderful airfield at West Melton is a great asset, more especially as it is outside the Christchurch control zone and is free of landing and airways restrictions, an important factor at certain stages of training.” 

GARDENING

ADVERTORIAL

Helping your garden to perform with better soil The wild windy weather has certainly taken its toll on the garden and cleaning up will take some time. Add to that the arrival of spring and there are certainly many things that need to be done in the garden. Gardens perform best when they have the right balance of nutrients. Adding the right nutrients will promote a healthy growing environment for your plants, flowers, vegetables or trees.

If you notice your garden lacking some ‘oomph’ try adding compost to the soil. Mix it thoroughly with the soil that is there and it will help create a better growing environment for your existing plants, as well as preparing for

new planting. For best results try adding Blood and Bone to the top 10cm and lightly fork it in. South Hort’s Certified Organic Compost is fantastic to use on all areas of your garden. We also have Blood and Bone available in a 2.5kg pack and a 20kg bag. Growing your own vegetables is a very rewarding experience. It may take some time to create a vegetable garden from scratch, but in

the end it is well worth it. When deciding what to fill your planters with consider that what you put in has a direct effect on what you get out. Vegetables perform exceptionally well when grown in the right product and at South Hort we have created an excellent Vegetable Garden Mix that will do this. It contains a slow controlled release fertiliser that will direct the nutrients to the right place at the right time. It is safe to plant straight into, and is suitable for all vegetables. We also stock a number of other fertilisers that will also aid in producing full vibrant looking vegetables. Fertiliser is available in bulk and in bags for smaller jobs. If you have any questions about your garden, please call us for some advice. Our friendly staff are more than happy to offer any suggestions and help where they can.

Macrocarpa facing a changing landscape New Zealanders have long enjoyed the look and smell of macrocarpa (Cupressus macrocarpa), as well as its timber properties — for functionality as tough shelter and great firewood. However, the use of macrocarpa is declining, largely because of the increasing levels of cypress canker in the environment. A superior replacement is Ovens Cypress (Cupressus x ovensii). It has been grown successfully from cuttings for over 30 years in New Zealand with increasing volumes being planted in recent years. The advantages of Ovens Cypress over macrocarpa are: • Less susceptible to canker. • Can be grown successfully from Northland to Southland on a variety of soil types. • Superior form, with few small close to horizontal branches that don’t fork or compete strongly with the main leader. Much less pruning work. • They are a clonal tree, meaning they are identical, making the stands easy to manage, and giving you confidence in the quality and consistency of the final product.

• You can plant fewer trees, as they are all potential winners. Unlike planting a variable macrocarpa seedling (not a clone) where at least two to three trees are thinned to get a satisfactory stand of quality trees. • Superior durable heartwood timber starts forming very early in the tree’s life. Ovens Cypress is intolerant of hot dry, exposed sites with persistent wind, or any salt-laden winds. If you are in a drier clime then look for micro-sites on south-facing slopes out of the wind. As a general rule, the windier your site then the more trees you need to plant to provide shelter. This could be achieved by perimeter shelter, ‘nurse’ trees planted amongst the Ovens Cypress, or by using a higher initial stocking of Ovens Cypress. Understanding adrenal fatigue  by Michael J. McCammon, Medical Herbalist and Naturopath

The symptoms of adrenal fatigue are constant tiredness, need for extra sleep, inability to cope with stress, reduced sex drive, low back pain, sighing, yawning, recurrent infections, irritability, craving sweet food, irrational anxiety, depression, insomnia and night sweats. The adrenal glands (also known as suprarenal glands) are endocrine glands that sit at the top of the kidneys and are chiefly responsible for releasing hormones in response to stress. The adrenal glands are dependent on ACTH released by the anterior pituitary. Without it, the adrenal cortex atrophies and cortisol secretion ceases. Homeostasis is the balance between cor tisol and DHEA.

Increased cortisol levels can exhaust DHEA production. Many drugs can deplete the adrenals such as the statin drugs and corticosteroids (prednisone). The use of statin drugs cause low libido and muscle fatigue, problem that can be prevented with healthy levels of cholesterol. Stress also has an effect on sugar balance and cortisol by causing an increase in adrenalin bringing about the release by the body of stored sugars. Cortisol does this by drawing glucose from muscle tissue. This in turn elevates insulin in order to restore normal blood glucose levels. The herb Gymnema can balance carbohydrate and sugar cravings that may arise from this pattern.

Food Intolerance – the hidden epidemic Food intolerance or sensitivity can result from your body reacting adversely to certain foods.

Often the foods we include regularly in our diet or the foods we crave may be the ones causing the problem. Food intolerance symptoms may be due to several factors including sensitivity to certain chemicals in foods or drink, for example amines in chocolate and red wine can cause migraines. Research has shown that if your immune or digestive systems are compromised certain antibodies may cause inflammation resulting in a wide range of symptoms such as fatigue, IBS, bloating, migraine or obesity. Symptoms can last for several days or longer and often appear random, making it difficult to identify which foods your body is struggling to deal with. Food intolerance should not be confused with food allergy which usually manifest in instant responses and are obvious. Food intolerances are often the hidden cause and may well be the ‘drivers’ behind many

Knowing what foods you are intolerant to can be a power tool in becoming well. Naturopaths are well versed in the dangers of food intolerance. A food detective test is a highly accurate way of determining your harmful foods. By taking a small, fingerprick blood sample, New Zealand Herbals measure food-specific IgG antibodies in your blood. Health and Fitness Fresh ideas for spring produce

Nature’s colours scheme Our grandmother’s tradition of having “3 veg’ on you dinner plate is loaded with good science. We now know that the colours locked into plant foods are the source of some of carotenoids, some of nature’s most important antioxidants. The most common carotenoid is beta carotene. The most common sources are carrots, squash and dark leafy greens. Beta carotene is often called pro-vitamin A because the body cleverly converts beta carotene to active vitamin A. This is critical for eye function and is needed for healthy mucous membranes and immune function. Several good studies showed beta carotene helped lung function by protecting lungs from free radical damage. The real heroes include lutein, with its cousin zeaxanthin in helping prevent eye disease, especially age related macular degeneration and lycopene for prostate health. Lutein and zeaxanthin protect the delicate macula, the central part of the retina responsible for our most detailed vision, from free radical damage caused by solar radiation. You can get lutein and zeaxanthin from dark leafy vegetables, corn, red peppers, goji berries and egg yolks. I recommend 2.5-5mg of lutein daily to protect eyes. The carotenoid lycopene has been shown to have benefits for men’s health by preventing the free radical damage that can lead to prostate cancers. The best sources of lycopene are cooked tomato products. Any good multi antioxidant should include lutein, lycopene and some beta carotene. I recommend 5mg of lycopene daily to protect prostate cells plus other antioxidants especially grape seed extract (200mg) natural vitamin E (400IU) and selenium (150mcg). To optimise your intake of these important carotenoids I recommend a diet rich in dark green and brightly coloured fruit and vegetables combining both cooked and raw products. With supplements, look for the most important carotenoids especially lycopene and lutein. These should be in any good multi-antioxidant but look for supplements that have all the antioxidant groups not just some of them. Give me a call for more information. Spring’s seasonal produce provides a great opportunity to add fresh flavours to healthy, tasty meals, according to 5+ A Day. This week we look at four stars of spring — asparagus, avocado, mushrooms and strawberries, and include some quick seasonal recipe ideas. Asparagus is one of the first vegetables to signal the start of spring. They are a good source of folate which is important for pregnant mothers and also a source of riboflavin which helps release energy from carbohydrates. Asparagus is delicious cooked or raw and is low in calories. For an easy asparagus salad, shave raw asparagus lengthwise with a peeler, toss with olive oil, lemon juice and a mix of fresh herbs, such as mint, basil, coriander and dill. Top with shaved Gruyere and season. Alternatively, simply steam asparagus and drizzle over a vinaigrette of red wine vinegar, extra-virgin olive oil, finely chopped shallots and parsley. Avocados were once called ‘ãhuacatl’ or the testical tree by the Aztec and are a real super food. They are a good source of fibre, helping to maintain a healthy digestive system and lower bad cholesterol. They are a source of potassium, iron, niacin, B6, vitamin C and an excellent source of folate. For a creamy taco topping, purée an avocado with plain yogurt and a healthy squeeze of lime. For a fresh twist on guacamole mash up an avocado, mix in lime juice, diced granny smith apple, fresh chilli, chopped coriander and season. Serve with fish or chicken. Try mashing 1/4 of an avocado with a fork and spread on bread instead of butter. Mushrooms were referred to as ‘Food of the Gods’ in Ancient Rome. They are low in calories

and a source of riboflavin, B6 and niacin which are important for healthy skin and hair. For a versatile pasta sauce sauté chopped onion and garlic with sliced Portobello mushrooms. Cover and simmer over a low heat for 10 minutes. Toss in chopped parsley and cooked pasta of your choice. For an easy appetizer combine chopped parsley and tomato with crumbled feta cheese, bread crumbs and a little olive oil. Stuff mixture into large button mushrooms and bake until soft. Did you know that strawberries are not actually berries because their seeds are on the outside? Strawberries contain ellagic acid, a phytochemical, said to have anti-cancer properties. They also contain flavonoids which help reduce cholesterol. For something a bit different try tossing sliced strawberries through a chicken salad, drizzle over a tangy vinaigrette and finish with a little crumbled blue cheese. For a sweet and savoury touch to roast chicken, fish or grilled pork tenderloin, mix chopped strawberries through avocado salsa. This salsa is also great as a dip served with baked tortilla chips, and of course fresh strawberries make a great addition to a cheese platter. With all this beautiful spring produce available there’s really no excuse to not enjoy a colourful, healthy and varied diet which is not only good for your taste buds, but good for your health too. 
