Mr Bates, who contract milks 1,200 cows at Burnham and is a member of Dunsandel Young Farmers, said heading into the competition, held at the North Canterbury Clay Target Association’s range at Fernside near Rangiora, he was feeling a “bit rusty”.
However, it didn’t stop the 29-year-old from taking out the Tasman regional clay target shooting title. “It was great to blow out a few cobwebs. Coming away with a win was a bit of a shock to the system, it’s probably been about three years since
I last swung a gun at a few clay targets.” he said. The win advances Bates and second place-getter, Lincoln University student Cam Lowery, through to the national final.

Overall 19 films were submitted for this year’s Environmental Film competition run by Lincoln Envirotown Trust (LET). “This marked a substantial increase over previous years, and it is to be hoped that it is indicative of people’s concerns about our environment and a willingness to articulate these,” LET project manager, Dave Fitzjohn said. The Primary Age Category, which had the largest number of entrants was won by Springfield School. “The students detailed their amazing efforts to plant natives at their school, including a request to the local fire brigade to come and water them,” Mr Fitzjohn said. “They also offered good sound advice, encouraging all of us to become involved in such activities.” He said a particularly pleasing feature of entries this year was that there were no less than five independent entries by adult producers alongside the assorted school age group and individual entries. “As the acting mayor of Selwyn, Councillor John Morten pointed out
at the awards evening, the number of varied entries greatly enhanced the contest, but left the judges with a very difficult task indeed.” All the films were viewed at the awards evening, and all producers and actors received recognition for their work. Kidsfirst Lincoln won the preschool age category by filming all the work they were doing to keep the Liffey River clean enough for eels. The adult producer, Monika Rastoggi, won her category with an instructional film on how simple everyday routines can be adapted to enjoy more sustainable living. Lincoln High School students Lexi Richards and Libby Duncan won the overall Kea Trophy for their humorous instructional film on how to create beeswax wraps for use in place of cling film. “Lincoln Envirotown would like to thank Rolleston Square, Enviro-Mark Solutions, the Warehouse Rolleston and the Creative Communities Fund for their generous sponsorship of this event,” Mr Fitzjohn said. ¢
Next year the finals of the NZ Young Farmers competitions will take place at conference week in February. The new-look event is being held in Christchurch, meaning the pair won’t have far to travel. “I reckon the changes are a good thing as previously those events were held alongside the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final. “It meant that if you were competing, you didn’t get to see much of grand final. Now people can attend both events,” he said. The New Zealand Young Farmers Tasman Region held its clay target shooting, fencing, stock judging and debating competitions during two days of competition. “We had a great turnout for the shooting,” Bates said. “There was a nice mix of experienced sports shooters as well as first-timers who were keen to have a go and learn.”

Civil Defence volunteers needed High honour for Lincoln Agritech u by Kent Caddick

Selwyn District Council is recruiting more volunteers to build on the district’s ability to respond to a Civil Defence emergency.
Lincoln Agritech Ltd was recognised for its cutting-edge innovations at the annual Canterbury Westpac Champion Business Awards on September 19.
Council’s emergency management team is hosting a recruitment evening at the council offices in Rolleston on Tuesday, October 2 at 7pm. Emergency management team leader, Ryan O’Rourke, said the council is looking to fill roles in all three of its volunteer Civil Defence teams including the response team, welfare team and community response team. “This latest round of volunteer recruitment will build on a strong base of Civil Defence volunteers who live in the district,” Mr O’Rourke said. “We want to increase the number of volunteers to ensure we can manage a long duration event, such as an earthquake generated by the Alpine Fault.” The Selwyn Response Team is looking for another seven members. The response team volunteers can expect to complete about six months’ training in communications, light search and rescue, urban search and rescue awareness, first aid, the coordinated incident management system and skills specific to certain Civil Defence events. Mr O’Rourke said there would be ongoing training once the team is operational to keep their skills up to date. “The response team is trained to a national standard. Being part of

Positive Ageing Expo Putting more life in your years u by Andy Bryenton
We all know that modern medicine, lifestyle and health choices are increasing the age we can expect to live to and that New Zealand has an ageing population, with a large proportion of our citizens now over the age of 65. Day of the Older Person, falling this year on October 1. At the same time, steps are being taken locally to ensure that the ‘autumn years’ as they are euphemistically named become a time of comfort and enjoyment for older folks in Christchurch. The 12th annual Positive Ageing Expo is about to kick off in Papanui, filling the central high school with exhibits that

There will be displays about better living and healthier homes, medical and personal security, activities, places to visit, places to live, and of course plenty of opportunities to get together with likeminded people and have a good time. The expo serves as a focal point for all of the efforts concentrated throughout the Selwyn district and beyond to improve the quality of life, health and wellbeing for older citizens, so it’s a must-see if you or your family members are of or approaching retirement age. From 9am through to 2.30pm the high

Come along and get involved, there’s so much to see and do, and great news to take on board about how to make the golden years a great time to be alive. Yet I’d never heard of it till I read about it in your magazine. Thank you. Ross, Auckland. “I am finding the Aircycle great for my diabetes, legs & feet. I feel much better, I can now walk much longer distances than before.” Neville. “Im 92yrs old. I’m a

The competition in the crossover and micro SUV section of the market is nothing short of intense, but elevate yourself into the upper echelons of size and luxury, and there are less of a bewildering array of options. Putting aside hyper-luxury name tags like Bentley and Lamborghini, both of whom now cater to the sports utility trend, a large, comfortable family orientated machine with plenty of space and four-wheel drive might seem to still mean going European. Certainly, upscale Japanese marque Lexus has their LX on offer, but there’s also something available for half the price, which challenges you to find the need for spending that extra large sum of cash. It’s Mazda’s top of the range Takami CX-9, and it not only looks different from the bulk of the SUV crop, it’s also got a few neat tricks and design flourishes up its sleeve. Take for example the interior, with the obligatory seven seats to accommodate a large family or undertake the school run. The first two rows come with built-in heating, and the whole cabin space is accented with nappa leather, rosewood and brushed aluminium. Yet everything still folds away when it’s time to move heavy cargo. It’s the same story with the engine — there’s no massive V8 under the hood or even a turbo diesel. Instead, Mazda has deployed their extremely efficient, fuel-saving Skyactiv technology to coax 227hp and 430Nm of torque from a 2.5 litre four-cylinder. The use of light construction materials — we have no doubt that Mazda has learned a lot about lightweight construction from years of tuning MX-5s — means that this engine is easily up to the challenge

Showhomes & Renovations
Considering your home renovations Renovating can be costly and inconvenient, but can also increase the value and enjoyment of your home. Before you launch into renovations, take time to consider whether the expense and disruption are justified. There are two main reasons people renovate, to add to the comfort, use and value of the home or to tidy it up to sell. Reasons to renovate: Staying in the home If you intend staying in the home you may want to: • Add extra space to accommodate an expanding family or to add a sense of spaciousness. • Add rooms for special purposes, such as an office or games room. • Change the configuration of the house for better flow, ease of use or orientation to sun and views. • Update and remodel to give the house a fresher, more modern look — this could involve major changes such as taking out walls to enlarge a room, putting in a new kitchen, or installing new wallboards and ceilings. Or it could simply be a
matter of painting or wallpapering. • Restore the house to its original style while adding modern features in some areas, like the kitchen and bathroom. • Add value to increase your investment. Renovating to sell If you are renovating to sell, it is likely that you’ll want to give the house an inexpensive makeover to freshen it up and make it more attractive to buyers. For example, repainting, repapering, or changing dated or damaged fixtures such as a cracked basin in the bathroom. You need to consider the tastes of potential buyers, which means keeping everything fairly neutral to appeal to a wider range of people. Not everyone warms to bright feature walls or pink bathtubs. Renovations that will increase the appeal of your home may include painting the kitchen and bathroom or putting in some decking to give an indoor-outdoor flow and an increased sense of space or some landscaping.
Don’t spend money that you won’t get back in the sale price. Ask a real estate agent for ideas to increase the house’s appeal, and how much you should spend without overcapitalising. Tip: Take care to renovate to the existing style of the house and neighbourhood. People search in particular neighbourhoods because
they like the age and style of houses found there. Giving your older villa-style home a very modern aspect, which is inconsistent with the other houses in the street, will lessen the range of potential purchasers. Beware of overcapitalising If you don’t intend selling, the money you spend on renovating will be an investment in the comfort and enjoyment of the house. Whether you

increase the value of the home may not be an important factor in how much you decide to spend. However, it is easy to get carried away with the excitement of doing up a home and overcapitalise by spending money that can never be recouped if you do end up having to sell. You may regret the $60,000 kitchen you put into your $200,000 house should unexpected life changes occur, such as a marriage breakdown or a business failure. It may be money you never get back if you have to sell and apportion the proceeds. If your house needs a great deal of work to get it
how you would like — decide whether you want to go to all the trouble and expense, or whether it would be better to sell and buy something more suited to your needs. Doing it yourself Many New Zealanders take on renovation, redecoration and alteration projects in their homes, usually in the belief that it will save them money. How much you can do yourself realistically depends on your skills, time and energy. There may also be legal restrictions on doing work yourself if you don’t have the right qualifications. You need to consider Building Code
requirements and getting building consent for some work. Many people are very capable of painting and wallpapering, and some straight-forward carpentry work. Some have the skills to do more difficult renovations and alterations. However, before you take on any work around your home, consider all the aspects of DIY. ¢
