Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam, who is area prevention officer for rural Canterbury, said police played a pivotal role in first identifying family harm incidents and then using the resources of the Safer Families group to assign agencies to take appropriate action. “Our object as frontline police is to assess the risk, assess the need and work with Safer Families to see what short and long-term help we can give.” He said police would allocate four staff to support the Selwyn Safer Families group. Selwyn Safer Families came about after discussions between police and the council and is a sub-group of the council’s wellbeing forum, which brings together social and health service providers in the district. Recently it organised workshops in Rolleston and Darfield, which saw 170 schoolteachers learn the skills of recognise, response and referral for identifying and addressing harm in

our community. West Rolleston School deputy principal Amanda Clarkson attended the Rolleston workshop and said it was an eye-opener and very positive and helpful. “It was really informative. It’s good for us to have learnt what to be looking out for, realising the little things. The big thing was knowing there is going to be support from police out here in Selwyn that we can access, and they can come and work with our teachers.” Council community services and facilities group manager Denise Kidd said the council was delighted by the response to the workshops and the support being offered by police and the Selwyn Safer Families group. “Selwyn is a better place when we have a strong community that looks after each other. “The work of Selwyn Safer Families is an important way to make that happen, and it’s fantastic to see the community embracing that.” ¢

“The Selwyn Hub, golf for children and families, has been going since February this year. Currently, we have 62 children signed up and seven clubs across Selwyn participating in the programme,” says play golf coordinator Pip Denes. Golf clubs involved in the programme are Charteris Bay, Ellesmere, Greendale, Hororata, Lincoln, Mcleans Island and Tai Tapu. “It was a beautiful day, and the dads came out and caddied as part of Father’s Day. The children played really well and enjoyed a time of upskilling as they walked around the course. The Spring Challenge was introduced to encourage children to play nine holes, and it helps them to practise their skills. “This is not only open to Hub members but all Canterbury Juniors.

There are seven events scheduled over the next couple of months, with each of the Hub courses holding and event. Scores are accumulated over the series for some great prizes. “Sunday’s game was at McLeans Island, and we had 23 participants, five players were from clubs outside the Hub. There are four grades, girls, boys 5–10 and 11–15, from the shortened purple course and then boys 12–15, generally, those that have handicaps play from the white tees. Each grade plays nine holes with the next round at Ellesmere Golf Club on Sunday, September 8.” The event is sponsored by Callaway Golf and Chinny Dipper Children’s Clothing. The New Zealand Army Band was presented with the Pooley Sword on the final night of the 2019 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, an award given to the act that has made the greatest contribution to the Tattoo as chosen by fellow performers.

A group of five St John youth received the inaugural Youth Community Service award. Rebecca Inch, Samuel Ireland, Daisy Prosser, Bailey Inwood and Jenny Walter were recognised for completing their St John Senior Shield Badge, which includes doing more than 100 hours of volunteering. The group also won five categories at this year’s St John MidCanterbury Youth Competition. Five Community Service Awards were also given to long-standing volunteers Mike Davies, Reg Anderson, Craig Moody, Carol Gurney and Errol Ashby. Mr Davies was recognised for his volunteer work as a Civil Defence first responder looking after neighbours in Hororata following the earthquakes and helping protect houses from flooding. Along with looking after the Hororata Domain and church grounds at his own expense and managing car parking at big community events including the Hororata Night Glow. A Justice

of the Peace and 23-year member of the Glentunnel Township Committee, Mr Anderson was noted as a strong, community-minded man always willing to get involved and support others. Mr Moody received his award for his active, practical involvement in many different community groups including the Glentunnel Community Centre, Coalgate Township Committee, Glentunnel Reserve Committee, Glentunnel Indoor Bowls and Glentunnel Museum. Mrs Gurney was recognised for her efforts as a willing volunteer at many community events and for setting up the second-hand clothing stall Carol’s Closet, which raises money for the Hororata Anglican Parish. Mr Ashby received his award for his work as founding chairman of the Malvern Community Patrol, a member of the Malvern Community Vehicle Trust and a Red Cross Meals on Wheels volunteer. ¢

Director of Music, Major Graham Hickman, said it was a great honour to receive the award on behalf of the band, who had trained hard to bring New Zealand to the world stage. “It’s been a memorable month for the band, with live audiences totalling around 220,000 in front of Edinburgh Castle, Major Hickman said. In Scotland for their sixth Edinburgh Tattoo, the New Zealand Army Band have performed in front of capacity crowds for 24 performances. “The band performed exceptionally every day, even under some rather tr ying weather-related circumstances! Major Hickman said. “The audience response certainly helped — we received a lot of feedback about being the crowd favourite. Receiving the Pooley Sword

has topped it all off. It’s very humbling to be recognised in this way by our fellow cast members.â€? The New Zealand Army Band is known for bringing not only its elite talent but also its unique cultural heritage and a playful kiwi edge to its performances with performances often including wellknown kiwi tunes, plenty of good humour and intricate drill manoeuvres. Based at Burnham Military Camp, the band has served New Zealand at events and festivals including the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Basel Tattoo in Switzerland and the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II. ¢

Invictus team visit Rolleston It’s not about being the best. It’s about being the best that you can be.

p The NZDF squad for the Invictus Games The Hague 2020

That’s the message NZDF Invictus Games The Hague 2020 Head of Mission Commodore Mat Williams had for the team when they gathered for their first training camp at Burnham. The Invictus Games were created by Prince Harry, and use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate understanding and respect for wounded, injured or ill current and former servicemen and women. CDRE Williams said he had enjoyed reconnecting with people he had served with and who had moved on from defence but were now back in the fold through Invictus. “I can see how much they’re enjoying being part of a supportive team and what it’s doing for them,” he said. “It’s almost palpable for some; their whole demeanour has changed in the space of 24 hours. It’s almost like

they’re home — they’re not rejoining, but they are reconnecting.” Canterbur y Crusaders’ highperformance manager Simon Thomas spoke to the team and outlined the importance of preparation. “Nail the prep, and you can enjoy the moment and just play.” However, it was also important to enjoy the process — “it shouldn’t be a grind,” he said. The team also paid a visit to Rolleston College, presenting them with their banner and flag from the Invictus Games Sydney 2018. “Students had written messages to the team on the flag, and it was hung at the team hotel, offering daily inspiration to all involved in the 2018 campaign. The team is sponsored by Fulton Hogan, Jaguar Land Rover, Dynasty Sport and RSA. ¢

Much travelled beetles u by Mike Isle

Beetles and their Fab Four namesakes The Beatles have one thing in common — a long and winding road; the latter sang it, the former travelled it. The Lincoln University Entomology Research Collection, one of the largest of its type in New Zealand, recently received its largest-ever private donation of insects. Moreover, some of the collection has travelled a long way to get there. Dunedin-based amateur entomologist, John Nunn, has donated thousands of beetle specimens sourced from a range of countries. Museum curator John Marris said Mr Nunn is a well-known collector who has several species named after him, and the university strongly appreciated his gesture. The new specimens, laid out in 100 boxes, are predominantly overseas beetles and are a valuable resource for staff and students doing insectbased research and to help “put a face to a name,” Marris said. Quarterly economic monitor figures from analysts Infometrics showed Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Selwyn grew by 4.5% in the year to June 2019, compared to 2.5% growth nationally and 1.7% growth across Canterbury. Selwyn recorded the largest annual growth in GDP of any district in New Zealand according to the report. New late-night bus service Supporting

people with Tourette’s

u by Mike Isle

Selwyn residents now have a late-night travel option to take them home after a night on the town. Christchurch transport operator Bentley Transport has started a late-night bus service from Christchurch’s CBD to Rolleston via Lincoln. Simultaneously, it is trialling a similar service from Christchurch to Rangiora. Both services depart the Central Bus Exchange at 1am and 3am Sunday mornings. The Rolleston service has stops at Christchurch Hospital, Westfield Riccarton, Church Corner, Prebbleton, Lincoln University and ends at Kidman Street, Rolleston. Prices range from $7 to $12 depending on the distance travelled. Bentley’s managing director and founder Liam Bentley said Rolleston had been without a late-night public service since the 2011 earthquakes, which saw the cancellation of the After Midnight Express bus route. “Wellington, Hamilton and Auckland all run late-night buses for those enjoying their Saturday nights,” he said. The new bus service has a safety focus. Bentley said heavily

intoxicated people would not be allowed to board and consumption of alcohol would not be permitted on the bus. The buses were equipped with 4G internet-based security cameras, GPSenabled panic buttons, and drivers undertook special customer service training designed to safely and effectively manage difficult situations. “Our customers can benefit from other initiatives, such as large screens on-board playing music videos, USB chargers, Wi-Fi and food and refreshments,” Bentley said. On its first venture on Sunday night, the Rolleston route attracted 13 passengers, two of whom stopped at Lincoln with the rest travelling to Rolleston. Liam Bentley said the route would be trialled for six months and if successful the company will consider trialling other routes. Details, including timetables, are on the company’s website bentleytransport.co.nz.

Saturday night’s Zumba fundraiser for the Tourette’s Association of New Zealand’s Camp Twitch raised more funds than expected to help families attend the upcoming camp. “Our Zumba fun night went off with a bang, and we are so pleased with how much support we received from the community. We want to help families living with the syndrome attend the upcoming camp,” said organiser Catherine McHaffie. There is limited funding available for people dealing with Tourette’s syndrome, so Catherine hosted the evening to subsidise the camp fees for families. “About 100 people joined us, which was double what we thought we may have. The best part is, we more than doubled the amount of funds we were aiming to raise.” The grand total of $2,686 was sent off to the Tourette’s Association of New Zealand. “This means we can send more children to Camp Twitch 2019 than originally hoped for. The camp is really important for families because both children and adults can meet others with the condition. “I have worked here since Bill brought the store some three years ago and it is a wonderful place. We believe it is important to give our community the chance to celebrate on both Mother’s and Father’s Day and encourage them to treat themselves to a meal out,” said manager Bex Savage. “I am the baker, and we have two very good chefs. We are in a farming community and think all the dads, mums and role models are hard-working and deserve a chance to come and have a good meal. They can have family together on these days and not have to stress of cooking or cleaning up the mess later. We have a big fireplace and a comfortable homely vibe for people to socialise. Our meals are hearty, and

I created special Father’s Day cookies as a special treat because dads aren’t really fussed on the pretty little cupcakes like we do for Mother’s Day. “Our community is small, and it is like one big family, we know our local customers by name — not just the coffee they drink. We all support each other, and at present, our farmers are busy with calving and lambing season, so it was a nice opportunity for them to treat themselves to a meal out, have a break and celebrate friends and family together. We are in the middle of nowhere, but on the way to everywhere. It is great meeting new people who are passing through and having local people enjoy a chance to meet up when they can.” ¢

Springing into spring

Get the toys ready before Santa u by Andy Bryenton

Spring is here at last, with summer following hard on its heels, dragging a sack of holidays behind it. For many of us, that means it’s time to whip the tarp off those summer ‘toys’ and tools, ready for the tight schedule — three weeks to daylight savings, seven to Labour Day, a mere 15 to Christmas. Well, that is, if any of those not-socarefully stored jet skis, dirt bikes, weed whackers, ride-on mowers and boats actually start. Shooing away the winter’s harvest of resident creepycrawlies who love to scuttle under a tarp is only stage one when it comes to getting the arsenal of summer ready to go. At least now, when a small child asks you where slaters and roaches (not to mention large, angry-looking gloss-black spiders) come from, you can tell them in all honesty that they come from boats stored under wraps for the winter. Batteries suffer the most

from idleness, degenerating into heavy chunks of plastic and lead. Tyres gently flatten as our attentions focus away from boat trailers and caravans, and onto pressing winter concerns such as splitting firewood and wondering why it seemed like such a good idea, last December, to buy a convertible. Then there’s rust. Neil Young had its number because it really does seem averse to taking some shut-eye. It gnaws away at all that’s fine and good until its nasty handiwork is revealed by the cold, hard light of the WOF inspector’s work lamp.

Leaving repairs or a check-up to the last minute is a recipe for disappointment at best, and unprintable swearing might follow. The good news is, there are plenty of locals who can help you get your weed eater whirring and your ride-on mower gently turning what looks like a tiny rainforest into Lord’s cricket pitch. They can even turn what your significant other is calling the ‘whirlpool’ (a hole in the water into which you lose money, ie, your pride and joy, the boat) into a

powerful and resplendent vessel feared by fish everywhere. It’s amazing what a little maintenance can do; this might even work vis-a-vis the old wardrobe if crocs and stubbies feature heavily in your summer collection. On a serious note, take care and be safe with all your summer tools and toys. If it looks broken or it’s not up to code, get it looked at by the professionals. Please don’t forget the right safety gear on and off the water this year either! ¢

Rugby’s greatest challenge u by Andy Bryenton

September heralds the beginning of the greatest struggle in Kiwi sports; well, at least for the moment. In the future, we will no doubt be enthralled by future America’s Cups and cricket tests, but for now, the eyes of the nation are on the oval ball for the Rugby World Cup. Our valiant All Blacks waste no time in starting their defence, facing South Africa in Yokohama, Japan on September 21. It means that there’s only limited time remaining for rugby fans to get themselves prepared and ready for the big viewing parties that will bring friends and neighbours together at odd hours all over New Zealand. The checklist is simple. You’ll need a suitable 4k high definition television, plumbed into Spark’s fibre network to catch all 48 games in the best of crisp detail and colour. All of the All Blacks games will be broadcast free to air via the internet as well. Some will be delayed, but semis and final matches have been promised live and direct. The essential factor is a fast broadband connection and a modern television with the sound and visual capabilities to immerse you and your mates in the action. Then there’s refreshments for the team. A well-stocked fridge and some snacks are par for the course, but for the discerning host, a full barbecue is not out of the question. Japan, host of the tourney, provides inspiration

to give such meals a twist — teriyaki marinated steaks, chicken yakitori skewers, deep-fried okonomiyaki with prawns and more. Remember, too, that

Then again, the other great way to enjoy the cup is to head down to the pub to take it all in with the crowd. Inns and hotels across the nation will

be open late (or early) to show all the action thanks to a law passed through parliament just to help us party! Mitigating rural fire risk u by Mike Isle

According to a report for the NZ Fire Commission by the Institute of Environmental Science and Research Limited, some lifestyle block owners don’t believe their properties represent a fire risk. It comes at a time when the local fire service is warning the rural community that summer brings with it a heightened fire risk. However, some lifestyle block owners are not heeding the warning or believe they have already done enough to mitigate the risk on their property. The institute’s report found that some owners were more worried about the actions or non-actions of their neighbours. “Although lifestyle block owners understood there was a high fire risk in their neighbourhoods, they mostly thought their behaviour would not cause an out-of-control fire, and that any such fire would more likely come from a neighbouring property,” the report states. There was also a perception responsibility for mitigating the risk rested with the local territorial authority, although they acknowledged they too had some responsibility. “The majority thought it was the authority’s job to educate, and the property owners’ responsibility to implement that education, and for the authorities to support implementation.

Interviewees seemed to want more clarification on best practices.” The report says that improved working relationships with other parties such as neighbours and authorities were also seen as helpful and they saw communication as key to getting the message out about reducing fire risk. Some ways individuals can mitigate the fire risks on their properties are outlined by the district’s principal rural fire officer Bruce Janes. In his experience, Janes said, farmers are fairly good at mitigating the fire risk on their property, and there are plenty of resources on the Fire and Emergency website to help them. He said that measures that block owners and farmers can and should take are keeping undergrowth and grass short around building by mowing regularly, ensuring access to a property for large vehicles like fire appliances — he says the four-metre-high, four-metrewide is a good rule of thumb. Bird nests in machinery such as tractors, quad bikes, even aircraft, pose a real threat he says.

“In general terms, now is the time to have a clean-up around the property to prevent problems later. Just stay aware that there is always a fire risk and there is quite a lot we do on farms that can start a fire. Just staying aware of that, planning ahead, will be a great help.”

Fire and Emergency NZ recommends farmers keep track of three websites. Their site fireandemergency.nz has a section focussed on farming, fire weather. NIWA niwa.co.nz has current weather forecasts and checkitsalright.nz has the current rural risk status. ¢

Dung beetles to the rescue

by Ann van Engelen

Dr Shaun Forgie grew up travelling the world and is now helping New Zealand farmers transform animal dung into a useful product through dung beetles.

“M

ost of my childhood was in New Zealand, and as an adult, I lived in places like Argentina and South Africa,” said Shaun. Shaun gained his bachelor’s degree majoring in marine biology and a master’s degree in zoology with honours in entomology — the study of insects. “I investigated dung beetles here in New Zealand, then completed my PhD in Pretoria, South Africa on ball-rolling dung beetles. Dung beetles in New Zealand are restricted to native forests and bush habitats. When we started importing livestock, no one thought about needing dung beetles to clean

up the poo. That is where the problem started, as an abundance of poo creates a loss of productivity as it sits on the paddock and creates a habitat for flies and can contain disease pathogens, gut parasites, contaminants like pesticide residuals plus disease pathogens such as E coli, salmonella and giardia — mainly because dung is not getting buried into the soil rapidly. “Hawaii and Australia pioneered the way and imported exotic pastoral dung beetles as their native ones were not doing the job. I could see a problem here in New Zealand and set about establishing a solution.

Dung beetles can dispose of one cow pat in 24 hours to a few days, burying the product in the ground We have water contamination problems in high rainfall areas with water coming off pastures getting into the waterways. We went through a very fastidious process through the government and the Environmental Protection Authority to bring in 11 different types of beetles mainly from South-West Europe and Southern Africa suitable to our conditions and climate. “The beetles get rid of a pile in around 24 hours to a few days. They fly from dung pat to dung pat and make tunnels 30cm and 90cm in the soil underneath the pats for nesting. These are filled with dung made into balls or sausages each containing an egg. The hatching larvae feed on the ball, and the new adults, emerge leaving organic carbon and nutrients.” Tunnelling and excavating subsoils to the surface opens up the soil, improving aeration and soil structure —

allowing greater infiltration of fertilisers and urine. “Burial of nutrient-rich manure means nutrients go into the ground instead of running across the surface to our waterways. We are getting more than 80 per cent reduction in surface flow of waterway contaminants like sediments following dung beetle nesting activity, and nutrient loading deep in the soil enables grass roots to grow down deep improving drought tolerance. “We are finding earthworms that we introduced have increased fivefold and can occur at a greater depth. Many studies report dung beetle activity results in at least 70 per cent reduction in gut parasites. A four-seasons pack comprising seeding colonies of three to four different types of dung beetle is required for roughly 300 cows or 2,000 sheep, and beetle saturation off manure from

Roots can grow deeper into the soil where dung beetles have worked making grass more tolerable of drought conditions this many stock happens by year nine. You release them and leave them to reproduce. We have fencing and planting, but we need a self-sustainable low-cost solution on-pasture at the root of the problem. “The economic saving through dung beetle use in Western Australia alone is estimated to be one billion dollars per annum. Dung beetles to my mind are the best tool out there to do the job.” For more information go to dungbeetles.co.nz.
