Lincoln University says it will retain its autonomy despite entering into a partnership with the University of Canterbury. The two universities recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore partnership and merger options. The move came under fire from Selwyn MP, Amy Adams, who claimed the government was forcing a fire sale

of Lincoln University — which could lead to the Selwyn-based tertiary institute losing its autonomy. However, Lincoln University vicechancellor, Professor James McWha, said the MOU was the logical vehicle to ensure New Zealand’s land-based sector

remained internationally competitive. Professor McWha said the university was entering into an exciting new stage in its 140-year history.

Rolleston school achieves bronze status u by Kent Caddick

Rolleston Christian School has been awarded bronze status by Enviroschools — which aims to promote environmental sustainability among the country’s schools.

New sections in Wilfield, West Melton A wide range of new sections are now available at Wilfield. Drop in to our sales and information office, Kingsdowne Dr, Sundays or Wednesdays from 1pm to 3pm to find out more. Contact us on 03 741 1340 or email enquiries@yoursection.nz

p Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton addresses Rolleston Christian School students during the presentation of the school’s Enviroschools bronze award

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton and Canterbury EnviroSchools facilitator Andrea Taylor, recently visited the school to present the pupils with their bronze award. Teacher, Mandy Cleave, said since the day Rolleston Christian School opened in 2015, they have been an EnviroSchool. “We have perhaps been a little quiet about it to our wider community, however within our school — our environmental focus has played a huge part in developing our students’ learning and character. As an EnviroSchool, we are charged with fostering a generation of children who think and act sustainably. “Underpinning this are their principles of empowering students, understanding and honouring the Maori perspective, learning for sustainability, embracing diverse cultures and the uniqueness of individuals, and becoming part of a sustainable community. “Achieving recognition that we are now at the bronze stage of our EnviroSchools journey shows we have our foundation in place.

“As we now move on towards silver and then greengold, you will see the students at RCS taking more responsibility to maintain our sustainable practices, making decisions about action to take, and developing wider links with our whanau and community.” She said in an environmental context; it may look like an article in a newspaper to heighten awareness about an issue, or participating in riparian planting to be part of keeping Selwyn rivers clean, being part of a rubbish clean up on a river, or raising money to give to a trust or mission organisation. “All these actions are born from rich learning, creative thinking and an outward focus. “They are the children’s own ideas to help solve a problem they have identified and engaged with. “They then organise, plan and participate in the action. This is empowerment, children having a choice and taking the lead with action, and is one of the EnviroSchools guiding principles.” ¢

Killer guitar  Isla from the West Melton School band, Chicken Playground, received the Killer Guitarist award at the Rockshop Bandquest competition held at St Margaret’s College recently. The band, whose other members were Jasmine, Daisy, Molly, Elli, Devon and Josh, was taking part in the Canterbury regional section of the nationwide competition, which is aimed at fostering the next generation of Kiwi musical talent. West Melton School’s promotions officer, Rita Spadoni, said a huge thank you must go to music teacher Dave Morris who put in a lot of energy and time into the band. “Thank you also to the parents who helped getting our band to where they are now.”

Tuesday last week became even more special for the students of Waitaha School and Te Rito Harakeke Satellite at Rolleston College.

p A group of Waitaha students shows off their new shoes. Anthony Jones and Shaun Farrell are pictured in the background p Lincoln University vice-chancellor Professor James McWha (inset) says the university will retain its autonomy despite entering into a partnership with the University of Canterbury

“Our Lincoln Campus already has a strong international and national reputation as a centre of excellence in the land-based sciences, in partnership with Crown Research Institutes, industry and tertiary institutes from here and overseas. But we need to accelerate and enhance our work on behalf of the land-based sectors, which span agri-food and fibre, natural resources, conservation and tourism. We also need to encourage more young people to study and work in these areas, and we’ve been talking to government about how we might achieve our shared goals in a shorter time frame.” He said in order to more quickly realise these ambitions for the sector and to implement the recommendations of the Transformation Board; they need additional investment and more resources. “This is why we’re talking with the University of Canterbury about ways we can work together to the benefit of both universities.” Professor McWha said a simple merger would not achieve what is required. “We’re delighted that the minister has explicitly stated that the Lincoln name, identity and culture is a bottom line and that our campus will continue to be New Zealand’s headquarters for teaching and research in the land-based sectors. The benefits to the district

of Selwyn will be manifest: a rapidly increasing student and teaching roll will spur economic development; the continuing development of national and international partnerships will attract further international recognition and inward investment, benefitting the community. We’re excited about the future and agree with local MP Amy Adams that an autonomous Lincoln University is critical for the accelerated development of world-class teaching and research, based at our Lincoln campus.” ¢

It was the day that each student at the special education school was presented with a pair of sports shoes from the Shoe Clinic in Riccarton. The school’s deputy principal, Liz McNaughton, said her students were extremely excited about receiving their shoes. “It was just amazing. A wonderful donation by the Shoe Clinic and the staff and students are just so grateful to them.” Shoe Clinic manager, Shaun Farrell,

said the gift of the shoes was a great way to give something back to the community. He and Shoe Clinic staff member, Anthony Jones, made the presentation in person and spent time with each student individually, measuring and ensuring the shoes were a perfect fit. In total, the Shoe Clinic gave away 45 pairs of shoes. The occasion was organised by Graeme Bain from Special Olympics New Zealand. ¢

Selwyn’s ties with the NZDF High fuel prices worrying many in Selwyn u by Sam Broughton, Selwyn Mayor

Our community has a close relationship with the New Zealand Defence Force, and it is great to have Burnham Camp in Selwyn.

u by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

Fuel prices are sitting at record levels across the country, and I know many people here in Selwyn are starting to think more carefully about how and when they use their cars. At the time of writing this column, the average price of fuel in New Zealand was $2.39 a litre. According to MBIE data, every litre of fuel sold in New Zealand includes $1.27 of tax (made up of emissions trading costs, petrol taxes and GST) — 52% of the pump price. In Australia, excise taxes are closer to 40 cents a litre, and fuel prices are significantly lower. Despite the regional fuel tax in Auckland of 11.5 cents a litre, most South Islanders are still paying more than Aucklanders to fill up their vehicles. This state of affairs has shown clearly, that regional fuel taxes do not work and it is alarming that the government has left the door open for other regions, such as our own, to roll out their own regional fuel tax in the future. That is why the National Party is taking the initiative and has

lodged a bill in parliament aiming to repeal regional fuel taxes within three months. Aside from this, prices are still set to rise further — because the government is proposing three additional rounds of national fuel tax increases totalling an extra 12 cents a litre of fuel. All of these additional fuel taxes imposed by the government put pressure on the budgets of ordinary Kiwis. With forecasts showing a further weakening in the New Zealand dollar, it is likely that pump prices will rise even further. Some commentators have predicted that our dollar could drop to 60 US cents from around 67 cents currently, which would add about 9 cents a litre to the cost of fuel here.

Bellyful Selwyn has just celebrated its third birthday and is reporting the demand on its services has reached record numbers. Bellyful cooks and delivers meals to families with newborn babies and families with young children who are struggling with illness, or where there is little or no family or social support. Bellyful Selwyn is one of 20 branches of Bellyful around the country, and Bellyful volunteers fundraise locally to cover the cost of the meal ingredients and packaging. New for 2018 will be a Drum Major Mace Flourishing competitive demonstration with two of New Zealand’s top competitors travelling from the North Island for the event. Pre-registration for the training day is required, and details and entry forms into the games can be found on the website hororatahighlandgames.org. nz. ¢

Selwyn netball champions decided u by Kent Caddick

Greenpark has upset favourites Broadfield to take out the 2018 Selwyn Premier title in a thrilling match at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday. Broadfield went into the match as the form team after finishing ahead of the pack at the end of the round robin section of the competition and disposing of defending champions Lincoln in the semi-finals. That form looked to be continuing in the first quarter of the final against Greenpark as it cruised to an 11–9 lead with some fluent play throughout the court. After a stuttering start, Greenpark upped its game in the second quarter to draw level at the half-time break 22–22. The third quarter belonged to Greenpark as Broadfield’s cohesion fell away with Greenpark goal shoot, Casey Ashton, dominating the shooting circle despite some aggressive defence. By the end of the quarter, Greenpark had established a four-goal lead, 36–32. Early in the fourth quarter — Greenpark extended its lead to seven points before a desperate Broadfield roared back into life on the back of a superb display by goal attack Laura Lowe. They closed the gap and with seconds on the clock had drawn level at 44–44. However, the last say went to Ashton and the Greenpark team as she calmly slotted a last-second goal top secure the match and the title, 45–44.

Blooming good garden tips With spring just around the corner, now is a good time to decide what to plant, so you can enjoy a splash of colour in your garden as the weather gets warmer. Spring is a great time to get out and clear up the overgrown borders and gardens you’ve been ignoring during the chilly winter months. Remove leaves and other debris from your gardens to make room for the new plants. If your soil is workable, take the opportunity to dig in five centimetres of organic matter — such as well-rotted manure or compost. Late winter is a good time to give the greenhouse a scrub and clean up any debris from the floor. Disinfecting the inside of the glass gets rid of any pests and diseases that have come along during the winter months. Wash pots and seed trays to help prevent diseases and ventilate your greenhouse to give it a chance to dry out properly. Before spring hits entirely, give your tools a clean and a sharpen. It not only makes your gardening jobs easier — but lengthens their life and stops the spread of bacteria that can harm your plants. A compost bin is also a valuable asset to have in your garden. It could be a ready-made compost bin or a compost bin you’ve made yourself using spare bits of wood. It creates a place where you can put your garden waste, lawn clippings and food scraps which

can then break down into rich compost with lots of good nutrients for your garden. All you need to do is turn your compost with a garden fork each month

to keep it aerated. With all this under your gardening belt, you’ll be ready to take on the new season with a spring in your step. ¢

Spring into Spring Spring into good health with 5+ A Day Spring’s wide selection of vibrant produce makes it easy for Kiwis to create healthy, tasty and affordable meals. 5+ A Day recommends buying inseason produce, as it is bursting with flavour, nutrients and is excellent value. Brightening up your plate with spring produce is a sure-fire way of getting a good dose of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Oranges, tangelos, avocados, courgettes, new potatoes and mushrooms are just some of the produce to enjoy over the spring months. Nutritionist, Carmel Trubuhovich, from the New Zealand Nutrition Foundation says there is compelling scientific evidence that a diet high in fruit and vegetables can reduce the risk of many diseases. “Eating fruits and vegetables is a tried and true recommendation for a healthy diet, and for good reason,” she says. “Fresh produce is low in energy and full of fibre, which helps to fill you up. Also, eating plenty of fruit and vegetables can help ward off a host of diseases, including heart disease, stroke and some types of cancer.” Here are a couple of suggestions on how to spring into summer with fresh seasonal recipes. New potatoes Potatoes are our most popular vegetable, with 97 per cent of Kiwis eating them. New potatoes are versatile,

delicious and work well with different flavours and seasonings. For maximum nutrition from any potato, leave the skin on — the skin and the layer immediately underneath contain both fibre and antioxidants. Quick new potato recipes: New potatoes with fresh herbs couldn’t be easier to make. Boil new potatoes with mint leaves. Toss when still warm with a little olive oil, salt and pepper and lots of freshly chopped mint and parsley. Serve with meat and salad. Boost the vegetable count on a pizza with new potatoes. Boil new potatoes and thinly slice. Spread a pizza base with pesto, top with potatoes and a little fresh mozzarella. Grill until the cheese melts. Make a tasty salad by combining warm, boiled new potatoes with flaked smoked salmon, baby spinach leaves, capers and finely diced red onion. Dress with a light vinaigrette. Avocado This pear-shaped fruit has a nutty, creamy taste that can be used in a host of dishes from dips to salads. Quick avocado recipes: For a breakfast smoothie place half an avocado, one banana, one cup of trim milk and one tablespoon of honey in a blender. Whizz until smooth. Make a simple guacamole by mashing avocados with

lemon juice. Add some finely chopped red onion, chilli, tomato, garlic and fresh coriander. Combine, chill and serve with pita crisps or corn chips. For a lunchtime salad, mix together chopped smoked chicken breast, cherry tomatoes, avocado, cucumber and salad greens.

Toss with a little balsamic vinegar and lemon juice. ¢ For more tips and recipes go to 5aday.co.nz or find us on Facebook at facebook.com/5adayNZ.

Canterbury woman to head NZYF

100

A Canterbury woman has become the first female chief executive of New Zealand Young Farmers. The appointment follows the recent announcement Dunsandel Young Farmers Club member Ash-Leigh Campbell had become the first woman to chair the New Zealand Young Farmers Board in 12 years. Now Lynda Coppersmith from Christchurch has been named as the first female to take on the role of chief executive at NZYF. She is currently a senior account manager with accounting software company MYOB — a role she has held for the last six years. Prior to that she worked for DairyNZ, was a business development manager for the Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC) and an area manager for Fonterra in Timaru. “I’m really excited that I’m going to be working in the primary industries again,” Ms Coppersmith said. “The more CEOs we have who are women the better. Diversity is extremely important, and if the primary industries are to meet growth targets, it needs to do everything it can to connect with young women. “I’m hoping my appointment and having Ash-Leigh chairing our board will send a positive signal to women about our sector,” she said. NZ Young Farmers Board chair, AshLeigh Campbell, said Lynda has great relationship building skills, excellent business acumen and experience dealing with grass roots farmer issues. “That will stand her in good stead working with our membership

Planning for forestry harvesting operations u Article supplied by the New Zealand Farm Forestry Association

No forest harvest should ever commence without developing a harvest plan first. The harvest plan is not just a map; if done well it should be a critical part of the contract with the company, consultant and logger that sets out the expectations in terms of when and how the harvest will be carried out. Managing safety, for example, how the logger avoids or mitigates known hazards, should be in the plan. The harvest planning process is complex and has many aspects. It involves several interrelated processes carried out over a large and sometimes highly variable area, often taking several weeks or months to complete. Money and time spent on effectively planning a harvesting operation are nearly always recovered during the harvesting operation. Developing a harvest plan begins with understanding the forest being harvested, the intended market for the material and the available resources required to get the material from the forest to the market.

ARE YOUR GIRLS LAYING GOLDEN EGGS? No, we didn’t think so!

p Develop a harvest plan before commencing logging

It will finish with the successful completion of the harvesting operation. For simplicity it can be broken down into four main steps: A detailed harvest plan will typically have two components. The first part is a document where pre-harvest planning considerations, safety and environmental expectations are all written down to be part of the harvest contract. For example, if you wish that the logging contractor removes the wood waste from the processing areas, or restore any fences that were pulled down during operations, then this needs

to be in the plan and contract. Also, if harvesting needs to stop for stock movement, this should also be shown. It also allows the logger to cost it into their operation. The second key component of any harvest plan is the map. It should be a contour map showing as much terrain detail as possible. During the planning process, many different road and landing layout options should be considered so that the best one can be identified. Modern maps are made in GIS software and can be readily changed or modified as required. ¢

The Productivity Commission has recommended that up to 2.8 million hectares of trees are planted to achieve New Zealand’s carbon neutrality by 2050. Whatever species are used, this would nearly triple our planted forest estate. It represents the biggest land use change since we first lost most of our indigenous forest cover. It would be the biggest project ever undertaken by a New Zealand government, certainly since the 1870s. We’ve always grown trees for their timber. From now, trees are also to be grown in the global battle against climate change. The government, together with iwi, farmers and the public, will need to get this right for our very environmental and economic survival. The challenge is huge.

Selwyn Sounds shaping up International music stars, Kiwi icons and Aussie rockers will all feature in next year’s Selwyn Sounds musical event in Lincoln.

ADVERTORIAL

Willows Cafe — second to none Ambience, great service and spectacular views await discerning foodies at the new Willows Cafe located at the Hororata Golf Club.

p Andrew Fagan and his band The Mockers entertained the crowd at this year’s Selwyn Sounds Photo by Shane Jones Photography

It will be the third year the event has been staged with around 7,000 attending the inaugural event in 2017 — while a sell-out crowd of 10,000 turned up for this year’s event. Veteran singer, Leo Sayer of You Make Me Feel Like Dancing fame, will headline the 2018 event alongside the Little River Band from Australia. INXS frontman and Noiseworks singer, Jon Stevens, is also part of the line-up of talent at the event — which includes one of Australian rock music’s most enduring artists, Ross Wilson. The line-up for the 2019 Selwyn Sounds is a bit of a roll call of some of the best from this side of the Tasman including country rock legend, Midge

Marsden. Adding to the Kiwi flavour will be the Golden Kiwis, a band featuring some of the greatest names in New Zealand rock. The Golden Kiwis band is made up of Peter Urlich (The Dudes), Harry Lyon (Hello Sailor), Rikki Morris (Crocodiles), Cherie Mathieson (Sola Rosa), Rick Ball (Hello Sailor) and Tony Waine (The Narcs). The band will play an array of kiwi hits including legendary tunes such as Gutter Black, Blue Lady and Walking the Light. The event will be held at the Lincoln Domain on Saturday, March 2 — tickets are now on sale from selwynsounds. co.nz. ¢

The service when you visit the Willows Cafe sets it apart from the rest. Friendly, welcoming and genuine — plus the view overlooking the Hororata Golf Course out to the Selwyn River and Bluff Hill is spectacular and breathtaking. “We’re all about the customer,” say owners Jarnia and Jason Kupe. Willows Cafe fare is made with love — fresh each day with gluten-free and vegetarian options. The menu offers breakfast from 6am and favourites such as their house cut and battered fish and chips. Everything is baked on-site with real butter and farm fresh eggs. The real drawcard is Butcher’s Pie made fresh each day. Jason is a qualified butcher by trade, now a baker of amazing, meaty pies. Nothing artificial, no pie thickeners, just really good quality pie! If you’re heading to the mountains for skiing, grab brekkie or a pie — there’s even a gold/brekkie combo for $40.
