Champagne is the most recognised variety of méthode traditionelle but the term is only used to refer to the wine which actually comes from the Champagne district of France. Melton Estate owners Philip and Tracy Caunter will this week release Meltonia, a méthode traditionelle made from grapes grown on their West Melton vineyard. “The middle block of our vineyard was set up as a ‘champagne’ block in that it has Chardonnay, Pinot Noir

and Pinot Meunier grapes which make up a methode wine and it has been something we have always wanted to do,” Mr Caunter said. “We have seen in recent times a market shift, with people looking for a wine of this type and there are now a growing number of champagne style bubbly wines on the market. “Also we have a strong following for our Summer Love wine, a sparkling Riesling, which has been produced since 2008.”

Mr Caunter said they haven’t had to change much on the vineyard to gear up for the production of the new wine. “The actual grape growing of a methode is much the same as any grape growing. In fact it is a little easier as you are picking the grapes earlier, and the fruit was hand-picked by friends and family. However, it is a slightly more complex wine making process.”

p West Melton artist Sara-Jane Ludemann will have her fusion photography on display at the Lakeland Art gallery’s first guest artist exhibition

The exhibition at Lakeland Art in Leeston, which was opened by the Ellesmere Art Group Trust in May of this year, runs from September 15 through to October 19. Entitled ‘Bush, Birds and Country’, the exhibition features the work of West Melton fusion photographer SaraJane Ludemann and Little River painter Straun Macdonald. Ms Ludemann, who has previously exhibited her work at the Selwyn Art Gallery in Darfield, has been one of the driving forces behind the formation of the Lakeland Art gallery. “I have been an amateur photographer since my early thirties and now I am retired I have taken this further with post production work on my images, which I

like to refer to as ‘artistry beyond the lens’ or fusion photography,” she said. She said much of her work focusses on animals and flowers. The focus of much of Straun Macdonald’s work is on the natural environment. “Mostly I’ve been interested in landscapes, particularly remote and solitary locations,” Mr Macdonald said. “For me, painting is a way to combine creativity with my interest in tramping. There is nothing like walking into a remote, beautiful location to gather ideas and take photographs for the next series of paintings.” The Lakeland Art gallery on High Street in Leeston will be open from 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Sunday, for the duration of the exhibition. 

Rural awards on again Entrepreneurial Selwyn women living in rural areas are being invited to enter the Enterprising Rural Women Awards for 2017. The awards, put on by Rural Women New Zealand (RWNZ), recognise innovative and successful rural business women in horticulture, agricultural, dairy, tourism or any other rural sectors. RWNZ’s national president Fiona Gower said the awards are a showcase for the success of women operating businesses in rural locations and contributing to their local economy and community. “The competition has evolved over the years to promote entrepreneurship and encourage innovation in the use of technology in remote locations.” Marian Hirst of Bay Blueberries from Hastings won the Love of the Land Award in 2016. “Being acknowledged with the Love of the Land award has given me the opportunity to connect with inspirational business women throughout New Zealand,” Ms Hirst said. The Enterprising Rural Women Awards fall into four

UFB coverage extended in Selwyn  by Kent Caddick

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton is welcoming the news more rural towns in the district are to be connected to the ultra-fast broadband network. Kirwee, Hororata and Dunsandel are among the Selwyn towns set to benefit from the Government’s recent announcement it has allocated $270million to roll out ultra-fast broadband (UFB) to 74,000 rural households and businesses in 190 more towns across the country. Mayor Sam Broughton said it was pleasing to hear that parties are looking to improve broadband and communication services for the district’s smaller towns and the rural areas surrounding them. “Communication infrastructure is very important for families and businesses in Selwyn,” he said. “Some of our towns are already well served but a number have been forgotten by Wellington.” In addition to Kirwee, Hororata and Dunsandel other Selwyn townships including Arthur’s Pass, Castle Hill, Coalgate, Glentunnel, Doyleston and Sheffield will benefit from the announcement. Prebbleton’s UFB coverage will also be extended. Selwyn MP Amy Adams said the news is fantastic for the district. “Rolling out world-class broadband is a vital part of the Government’s plan

p Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton is delighted the Government has committed to a further rollout of ultra-fast broadband in the district

to support regional growth and we are investing a total of $233.3 million on UFB connectivity here in Canterbury,” Ms Adams said. “Furthermore State Highway 1 and a number of areas in Selwyn including Bealey and Birdlings Flat will also receive new mobile coverage.” 

Bubbles for Selwyn summer Firstly the grapes from Melton Estate’s 2015 vintage were picked and were gently pressed before a short ferment in stainless steel tanks at the vineyard. The ‘bubbly base’ wine was then sent to Allan Scott Wines in Blenheim for a second fermentation period and bottling. “The wine was stored in wooden crates for 23 months before riddling and disgorging, which is how they finally cork and cage the bottle,” Mr Caunter said. “Dosage trials were completed by the winery and ourselves, our favourite was selected and now Meltonia is ready to enjoy.” He said they are very happy with the finished product. “We think this is a great thing for the Selwyn district and already the tourism sector has responded positively. “I think it shows we are trying our hardest and putting ourselves out there. We now have eight different wines which come out of the vineyard in West Melton showing that Selwyn is a great place to visit.” While it is a limited release Meltonia will be available from the p Meltonia will be available from the Melton Estate vineyard in West Melton vineyard and also in supermarkets. “We now have around 30 outlets including New World, and it is also in Christchurch selling our wine, available on our website.” 

New street lights Selwyn star gazers will soon have a clearer view of the night sky thanks to a district-wide street light renewal programme. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) will help to fund the progressive removal of about 5,800 old and obsolete street lights in the district, replacing them with new LED light bulbs. The first stage of the installation will begin in the Ellesmere area followed by Malvern and then Selwyn Central. Selwyn District Council’s transportation asset manager Andrew Mazey said: “The renewal programme is an exciting opportunity for the district as the improved lighting will enhance both personal and road safety. “LED lights have less ‘spill’ which means light is more efficiently concentrated downwards where it is needed rather than upwards or sideways,” Mr Mazey said. “People who scan the night sky will really benefit from the reduction in this type of light spill which can dilute the night sky’s darkness. “The LEDs are also a much higher standard of lighting for the district’s streets and use less energy than the

wide range of old street lights, some of which have been in use for 60 years and are becoming more costly to operate and maintain.” The total value of the replacement programme has been assessed at $3.3 million, with NZTA subsidising 85% of the cost through its 201518 National Land Transpor t Programme budget. Mr Mazey said council’s share of the cost will be $495,000 which makes it a very cost effective project. “The overall cost of the programme is expected to be paid back over four to six years, based mainly on energy cost savings from the much more energy efficient LED lights.” Council plans to complete as many renewals as possible by the end of 2018 under this subsidy. Street lighting currently costs the Council around $400,000 a year in energy costs, while another $150,000 is spent on routine maintenance such as replacing lamps and other repairs on the older lights and fittings on the network.

Lights to benefit commuters Prebbleton and Rolleston commuters are to benefit from the installation of traffic signals near the Halswell Junction and Springs Road roundabout.

p The introduction of lights at the Springs Road and Halswell Junction roundabout will make the trip quicker into Christchurch for many Selwyn commuters

The New Zealand Transport Agency has announced the installation of the lights to help reduce congestion and improve safety during the morning commuter peak at a cost of around $150,000. It is expected the traffic signals will be in place by the end of September. Selwyn Deputy Mayor and Prebbleton resident Malcolm Lyall said he is delighted the intersection will be improved. “I’m pleased for our community the Transport Agency is proactively providing a solution to what has become a frustrating intersection on our local roading network. “This change will make a real difference to commuters.” Transport Agency journey manager Lee Wright said people travelling on Springs Road from Lincoln, Prebbleton, 1D Cardale St, Darfield Phone: 03 318 8836 darfieldpreschool@xtra.co.nz ï

Rolleston and surrounding areas are experiencing significant delays at the roundabout during the morning peak, between 6am and 10am. “Some mornings it can take more than 12 minutes for people to travel along Springs Road and enter the roundabout because of the constant flow of traffic travelling northwest along Halswell Junction Road,” Ms Wright said. “There are often long lines of traffic on Springs Road, backed up for up to two kilometres while people wait for a safe gap to enter the roundabout. “It is frustrating for drivers and also risky as some motorists try to enter the roundabout when it is not safe to do so.” The traffic signal will be installed 80m before the roundabout on the Halswell side of Halswell Junction Road. Two sensors will also be installed, one about 200 metres before the new traffic signals, and another on Springs Road about 50m before the roundabout. The traffic signal will only be used to manage traffic during the morning peak. Ms Wright said the two sensors will ensure traffic is not stopped unnecessarily and the majority of people travelling on Halswell Junction Road will not notice any delays. Following testing, the traffic signal is expected to be operational by the end of September. Ms Wright said give way rules will still apply at the roundabout, even if cars have got a green light. “The green light will give drivers’ permission to approach the roundabout, but they will still need to obey the road rules and give way to oncoming traffic once they are at the roundabout.” 

Lincoln aiming for five in a row  by Kent Caddick

Lincoln will be aiming for its fifth successive Selwyn premier netball title when it takes on Broadfield in the 2017 final this coming weekend. Lincoln, which is also on track for its second successive season without a loss, cruised into the final with a commanding 78-29 win over Southbridge at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday. Such was the commanding nature of the win, Lincoln was also able to give some of its more junior players court time in the win over Southbridge. Broadfield on the other hand had to come from behind to earn its place in the final in a thoroughly entertaining match against Greenpark. Little could separate the sides throughout the season and Saturday’s semi final was no different. It was almost two minutes before the first goal was scored in the match, such was the competitive nature of the clash. However, once on the board Greenpark started to ease in front and ended the first quarter ahead 13-8.

Greenpark was able to maintain that five goal advantage in the second quarter, although in a sign of things to come Broadfield had closed the gap to a single goal at one stage during the quarter. During the third quarter Broadfield was able to draw level but as the quarter came to a close Greenpark had edged in front again 40-38. With nine minutes to go Broadfield took the lead for the first time in the match and tenaciously hung on to take the match 56-53 and book its place in the final which will get underway at 1.30pm this Saturday. Lincoln will also contest the Premier 2 grade final after its B team overcame Dunsandel 50-25 in the semis. In the final Lincoln B will meet Burnham which ousted West Melton 55-51 in the other semi. 

Farming ‘n’ Lifestyles

Farming goats is no simple task  by Dr Marjorie Orr

Goats are not the hardy creatures many people think they are. They are fastidious eaters, they need good shelter, they are very susceptible to worms and Johne’s disease, their feet need trimming regularly and the Angoratype goats have continuously growing fleece which must be shorn each year. All in all, it takes a good deal of time and effort to farm goats well, and you have to know what you are doing. Feeding • Goats like to browse (stems and twigs from bushes) • The standard ryegrass and clover sward is not their preferred choice. • Trial and error will show you what grass species and weeds they favour, and they welcome browse like willow, tree lucerne and some poplar trees. • They like their fodder to be clean too. If it is at all dirty or if any other animal has touched it or walked over it, they will avoid it. This is why the tethered goat on dusty oily verges is so often under-nourished. Shelter • Goats hate cold, wet and windy weather. If they are exposed to bad weather they just won’t eat and are totally miserable. • It’s important to provide them with robust weatherproof shelter. • Shelter is particularly important after shearing, especially for cashmere (feral-type) goats that are slow to regrow their fleece. Feet • If the horn on the toes becomes too long, it curls under the foot, trapping

dirt and predisposing to problems like foot rot. • Overgrown horn must be trimmed back as often as necessary, usually once or twice a year. • Only dead horn should be cut away, not sensitive tissue containing blood. • If you draw blood when you trim feet, painful infections may develop. • Feet trimming equipment should be sharp and very clean, with regular disinfection. Johne’s disease • Goats seem particularly susceptible to Johne’s disease, which is a relatively common and incurable bacterial disease. • Any goat farmer who has goats that suddenly lose weight, scour profusely and die in spite of attempted treatment should contact a veterinarian to test for the disease. • If Johne’s is confirmed, there are various management options to control it, including vaccination. Worms • Worm control is very tricky, drench resistance is well established, and goats are relatively susceptible to worms. • If you have goats you really should discuss worm control with your veterinarian, so that the extent of any worm problems

nutrient levels, as already mentioned. Many farmers do not want to go dairy farming and some soils are not suitable, so cropping, sheep, beef and deer will continue to be a major land use. In our Stage 2 area, indications are that only 15% of the area will convert to dairy and the remainder will continue to be top quality cropping land. • Controlling and reducing use of nutrients. Nutrient levels on farms inside the CPW scheme are monitored and audited yearly and with every farm having its own management plan, the reduction in nutrient application is one of the key environmental pillars on which the scheme is built. Yearon-year, these quantities of water flowing through the aquifers will have a dramatic positive impact on Te Waihora and the surrounding waterways. An indicator of our ambition to be a guardian of the environment is that we have recently agreed with ECan to provide a discharge of 3.5 cumecs or 45 million cubic metres per year of water into the Selwyn to replenish the flows. The claim that irrigation is all about dairy conversions is not correct. Yes, some farms will convert but they will have to manage within acceptable

We want to be recognised environmentally as a world leader and we will do this, over time, by protecting and enhancing the surrounding waterways. If we fail in this aspect, then the scheme has no future. Just like farmers, we are caretakers protecting the quality of our land. How will we do this? There are two key ways. • Protecting the aquifers. By taking water from the Rakaia River in a controlled way, we are protecting the aquifers as farmers no longer have to rely on groundwater wells and artesian supplies. Stage 1 has already completed its second successful irrigation season and is showing some exciting benefits such

To balance these claims, Cantabrians need to fully understand projects like the Central Plains Water Scheme and its positive impact on the Selwyn Te Waihora (Lake Ellesmere) catchment and its role in restoring it. A study undertaken by Irrigation NZ, shows there is no correlation between areas of high irrigation development and regions with poor water quality. In fact, here on our doorstep, Environment Canterbury has already identified that the restoration of Te Waihora cannot be achieved without the CPW scheme and its ability to protect the aquifers. Concern about our waterways is high and to say that irrigation and/or Central Plains Water is responsible for the condition of the Selwyn River or Te Waihora is wrong. CPW has been

completion of Stage 2, our nutrient discharge levels will be lower in 2022 than they are today because of the advancement of new management practices and consent requirements. As part of this environmental focus, we have established over 50 monitoring points downstream of the scheme, have established an Environmental Management Fund of approximately $160,000 per year and also the Te Waihora Enhancement Fund ($160,000/year). We also work closely with the Selwyn

Waihora Water Zone committee, which is implementing the Canterbury Water Management Strategy in the area. Today’s water issues are the result of problems that have developed over several decades but, with today’s greater knowledge and understanding of environmental issues, the creation of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy, the introduction of the Land and Water Regional Plan and the effort and desire of companies like CPW, more constructive steps are being taken to address and remedy our water issues. 

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

A beginner’s guide to shearing sheep  by Dr Clive Dalton

Sheep grow wool continuously, so it is important to shear them at least once a year. Shearing is generally carried out in spring, so that sheep don’t get overheated during summer. If a sheep is not shorn, its fleece becomes so bulky that it has difficulty moving around. The fleece can get water logged, and the sheep can become cast and unable to right itself. Also a long fleece is particularly likely to get daggy and soiled, making the sheep very susceptible to flystrike. In very hot weather, sheep carrying too much wool will get heat stressed, and this is even more likely if the sheep is very fat. When preparing for shearing don’t use any insecticide chemicals on the fleece for six weeks before shearing. When using chemicals on the wool, check the withholding times. If sheep are dirty, prepare for shearing by having them crutched and dagged (ie remove dirty wool from the belly, and from below and around the tail). Make sure the sheep are completely dry before shearing, otherwise cuts are more likely to become infected and the damp wool will heat and get mouldy when stored. Shearers will refuse to

shear wet sheep as it can cause skin infections and boils. To prevent damage to the shears and the sheep, warn the shearers if the sheep have large ear tags (plastic or brass). Make sure shearers are aware of any wethers among the ewes. Hire skilled shearers to shear your sheep. Keep your sheep in yards overnight, preferably under cover, so their stomachs and intestines empty out a bit and so they remain dry even if it rains in the night. Don’t pack them in too tightly or they will dung on each other’s wool. Because newly shorn sheep feel the cold, put them in paddocks with windbreaks and plenty of pasture after shearing. It may take six weeks for the fleece to regrow sufficiently to provide effective insulation. If you don’t have good shelter for your shorn sheep, or if you are shearing them in winter, ask the shearer to use winter combs. These leave a short layer of wool to help protect sheep from cold weather. Sheep need extra feed after shearing. If there is insufficient pasture, step up the supplementary feed. The best time to apply louse and flystrike prevention

Springfield Lime Dairy Lane Rock The ideal aggregate for dairy lanes, silage bases, feed pads and gateways. Made to Springfield Lime’s high standards, it is:

Long lasting and economical Less slippery than alternative clay-based lanes Not crushed, for improved hoof health and cow comfort

Easily compacted to create solid coverage with less wastage Available in two sizes: capping rock for capping lanes and; building rock for building completely new lanes

treatments is after shearing, while the wool is short. Check the instructions on the packet. Individual sheep coats or covers are a good option on small farms if the weather is cold or wet. 
