A problem of stewardship
3
by Ann Morgan
The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment has reviewed the Federated Farmers idea of swapping some private land for land held by the Department of Conservation. In her most recent report on what is known as ‘stewardship land’ held by DOC, the commissioner, Dr Jan Wright, says Federated Farmers’ proposal for swapping land on their own properties with conservation values, in return for potential farmland held by DOC, ‘has merit’. Dr Wright expressed concern that the future of stewardship land has yet to be resolved. She recommended that the Minister of Conservation, Maggie Barry, takes direct responsibility for any decision to swap land. Federated Farmers has been pointing out that much of the stewardship land has little or no conservation values, yet DOC’s resources have to be used to administer it. “The Conservation Act provides for land swaps, but the process is complex and not only do farmers see it as too hard but DOC has no budget to allocate to swaps,” says Federated Farmers’ board member Katie Milne. “We are not surprised Dr Wright likes our proposal. It is obvious that some land on farms could ideally be professionally managed as part of the conservation estate. “On the other hand, it is equally clear that some stewardship land is much more suited to farming development.
“We would love to see Dr Wright’s support taken on board by the Minister of Conservation and get the process obstacles out of the way. This would benefit both conservation and production. “This has been sitting in limbo since DOC came to fruition. The process has been overlooked and it would be nice to think that it could be made easier to go through. We understand that boxes need to be ticked but surely it could be done in a speedier manner,” she says. “We are looking forward to a more user friendly outcome. There is some high value land available for DOC to do things which are important to them just as some of their land would be better off being maximised for productivity in farming. “The idea is well represented and for some small pieces of DOC land that back onto farmland, it makes good sense that it be moved into production which would help keep the country thriving and growing. Land doesn’t always revert back to native bush, it can turn to weeds and gorse. We do not need land to revert negatively. “We have had the push to start the process off, now we need it to move forward and have it looked into,” she said.

Winning success after
first season
by Ann Morgan Brett Steeghs capped off a successful first season in the dairy industry by winning the Waikato Dairy Trainee of the Year title.
T
he 26-year-old works as an assistant for Cam and Tess Hodgson on a 420-cow Horahora farm owned by Harry and Yvonne Ruffell. Brett and his partner Ruth Hone enjoy the country lifestyle and they plan on owning their own farm one day. Ruth has a job on another farm at present but they will work together in the not too distant future. Their interests outside farming include water skiing, barefoot skiing and fishing. “I grew up on a farm in Tirau and always knew I would one day like to have a career in the dairy industry. It was my long term goal since I was young but I wasn’t interested in
pursuing the opportunity until recently,” said Brett. “I spent a few years as a test engineer on agriculture machinery and have travelled overseas extensively to Europe, North America, South East Asia and the United Kingdom. “With the forecast drop in the dairy payout last year I thought it would be a good time to pursue my goals as the drop would create opportunities for work and I had gone as far as I could in my previous position. “We are very involved with the Young Farmers Club where we catch up once a week to socialise and raise funds throughout the year for events. I would recommend all young farmers to join

Milking a herd of 420 cows, he enjoys the everyday challenges these clubs as it is mixing with likeminded people and this is where we get a lot of support from — farmers helping farmers. “My role at present is second in charge of a 120-hectare farm and at the moment milking and feeding the cows are the two main focusses due to the lack of grass. Brett enjoys the prospect of being in the dairy industry for many years to come and says it is potentially a lucrative business. “I enjoy the everyday challenges with no three days being the same just as no two farms are the same,” says Brett. “We are always pushing for something to improve on and to make the farm more efficient. We enjoy the outdoors and seeing the results of what we achieve every day is very rewarding. “Farming is a great way to progress in life and it produces clear steps to take to keep growing and building which makes personal development achievable. “I decided to compete to get my name out there. It helps to benchmark yourself for the future.” Brett and Ruth have just purchased their first herd together and are getting
their company set up and ready to go as they are going 50/50 sharemilking. He is currently studying Primary ITO courses to increase his dairying knowledge and skills. “We will do this for a few years, get bigger jobs and progress through to farm ownership from there. “I would definitely recommend farming to others but at the same time you have to want to be there and get up every morning. “To be a farmer you need to have that bit of want and drive. It is a great lifestyle and industry to be involved in.”

The Soggy Bottom philosophy is simple. Fresh products and happy animals.

n 2003 Jonathan and Sarah Walker decided to move to New Zealand from the United Kingdom and bought a 60 acres of farmland on the edge of the Hakarimata Scenic Reserve. The couple named their land Soggy Bottom Holding, as the valley was wet and boggy. “I’d always wanted land,” says Jonathan. “New Zealand offered a better climate which was the draw card for my wife and it meant more space so I could have some land.” “We settled in the Waikato for work as Sarah is a nurse. It is also nice to be central. We bought the farm because it was cheap. It was part of a sheep farm
and we wanted hilly land. We didn’t know what we were going to do with it at first.” Since living in the Scottish Highlands for three years, the couple became interested in keeping pigs. They started with a Tamworth sow to roam about an old vegetable patch. The sow cleaned, rotavated and manured the garden. From then on they knew pig farming was for them. They then set about developing it into a small mixed farm. Ponds were created and more than five thousand trees were planted to provide fruit and nuts, shelter for the animals and timber. After killing their first free range pig,

“Make sure you get my good side” — ‘Soggy Bottom’ mainly keep Tamworth and Wessex Saddleback pigs Jonathan and Sarah Walker keep around 60–100 pigs
they discovered pork tasted better than the pre-packaged sort, so they decided to process some of their home grown meat, making pork and herb sausages and smoked bacon. “We built a licenced on-site butchery in 2006 so that we could process and thereby add value to the meat we grow. We offer butchery and food courses and are thinking of expanding to make a kitchen alongside this so we can teach people how to use the whole animal, including offal. “We wanted to make something really good for personal consumption and the farmers’ market was a way to deal with excess produce. I think people are getting fed up with poor quality products.” ‘Soggy Bottom’ mainly keep Tamworth and Wessex Saddleback pigs, as they have smaller litters than modern pigs, are slower growing, easy breeders and produce tasty meat. They keep from 60–100 pigs which are free to range and forage in grass and on the forest floor. Up to 50 sheep and 35 cows wander the pastures and poultry fill in the gaps. The couple believe it is important to support the local food system and sell their goods directly at the Waikato Farmers’ Markets. “The most rewarding thing about it is being a part of the whole process. Breeding the pigs to handing over some
bacon or sausages to customers at the farmers’ market and hearing their feedback the next week. “We do have a very loyal customer base and it makes it all worthwhile. “It has been hard work and we have learnt a lot about running a small business in an industry that is dominated by large companies.” “We aim to keep away from confining the animals and we keep as close to organic principles as possible. The ingredients in our products are simple as we use time and salt for curing with natural herbs and spices. “We usually have 15–20 varieties of pork, beef and lamb sausages on sale and are always thinking up new recipes. I have a retired butcher friend who comes to help me as well as Woofas regularly on the farm. “We make English style pork pies, as well as other pies such as steak & Guinness, scotch pies and chicken and chorizo pies,” says Jonathan. His favourite thing about the farm is sitting up on one of the many hills with Sarah, enjoying a sunset and watching the animals wander around. “Our philosophy is to have the animals living in as close to a natural habitat as possible. We have control over the entire process from paddock to plate.” For more information visit soggybottom.co.nz.

Top Soil Water Retention
by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials
Chemical production over the years has impacted heavily on our soils, soil fertility and particularly soil biology. These micro-organisms build humus levels in the soil which in turn increases the water retention quality of the soil. The more microbes, the more humus, the more moisture retained to help the farm through those dry periods. Agrissentials multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers bring life, vitality, and water retention back to the soil. A live living soil not only holds its ground, but encourages worm life and other diverse beneficial creatures, which all help to support the soil and the plants. The plant extends a great amount of energy, captured from the sun and transferred to carbon (humus) compounds, building root cells, excreting high energy mucigel into the soil, alongside the root surface, expanding this microbial garden mulch to the benefit of both plant and microorganisms. The organisms enjoy the luxury of this highly nutritious food source which encourages microbial growth. Components of mucigel exudates are: amino acids, vitamins, sugars, tannins, alkaloids, phosphatides, indole, salicylic acid, nucleic acid, tartaric acid, oxalic acid, malic acid, nitric acid, citric acid — all beneficial to life both below and above the soil. In a live, living soil there are a myriad of things happening that not only benefit the plant and the micro organisms, but transfer on as benefit for animals, farms and farmers. As the soil biology

numbers grow so does the increase in soil water retention, soil drainage capacity, topsoil, carbon, nitrogen and all other minerals stored in the organic matter of the soil courtesy of the microorganisms, to be taken as required by the plant. This magic system has been pumping away on our planet for millions of years. Its Mother Nature’s formula that has not only provided for all life on the planet, but has kept it sustainable and regenerating, without external interference — how amazing is that! The United Nations have declared 2015 as the year of the soils. According to the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations), “soil is a finite resource, meaning its loss and degradation is not recoverable within a human lifespan. As a core component of land resources, agricultural development and ecological sustainability, is the basis for food, feed, fuel and fibre production and for many critical ecosystem services.” It is therefore a highly valuable natural resource, yet it is often overlooked. The natural area of productive soils is limited. Under an agrochemical system of farming I believe that this statement would be correct. However, on a monitored dairy farm in Northland operating under a BioGro certified program, and using Agrissentials Rok Solid full spectrum solid fertiliser and our Oceans 100 liquid fertiliser, over an 8 year period we increased the topsoil of 50mm depth on a clay base, down to 200mm to 250mm deep. The soil on this farm was so alive that it was spongy to walk on and the farmer was feeding out hay from a 2 wheel drive, cut down, Toyota Lite Ace van, during winter which is unbelievable on any clay based soil in Northland. So, by using the best on earth fertilisers, the anecdotal evidence confirms that you can regenerate and increase top soil depth, for better production and it won’t take a lifetime. This month we are kicking off our national roadshow that’s coming to a town near you. Join us for a free afternoon to find out how to get better fertility & better production with John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials NZ Ltd {afternoon tea will also be provided}. Waikato’s Aaron Price is one of eleven finalists named in this year’s New Zealand Sharemilker/ Equity Farmer of the Year competition. The 50% sharemilker milks 250 cows in Morrinsville. “This year’s finalists illustrate that there’s no right or wrong pathway to take in the dairy industry and that you can enter dairying at any age or stage and be successful,” says national convenor Chris Keeping. “Most have entered the awards at least once before as they enjoyed and gained from the experience through networks they have made, business improvements they have learnt or the fun they have had!” Only two of the finalists are first time entrants. “What’s really impressive and highlights the increasing complexity of dairying is that seven of the 11 finalists have completed tertiary education to Bachelor level. It’s great that some of our brightest can see the opportunities and stimulating environment in dairying to succeed in business, to be part of a community, to share with their family and to grow wealth.” The finalists include a former policeman, teacher, accountant, and farm extension officer. Seven are operating in traditional 50% sharemilking agreements. One finalist is a lower order

FORESTRY
Forestry Market Report Allan Laurie MNZIF, Laurie Forestry Ltd
Remaining stable Log prices have remained mostly stable this month. Domestic prices are unchanged and export prices have dropped only NZ$2–$3 per cubic metre at the wharf gate. Meanwhile the New Zealand domestic market has very much swung to demand exceeding supply and in the export segment, very much the reverse. Export prices have been impacted by what has been a softening phase centred on a less than buoyant China demand profile. As reported last month, the situation in China is less than desirable with lack of credit and cash together with low numbers of new construction starts being the order of the day. On the positive side in tier one cities in China, house prices appear to have bottomed out and in a few cases started to lift again. Overall, the majority of comment suggests expectations and sentiment are now less negative than pre Chinese new year. However, in this key market for NZ Forest growers it is looking like it is not going to print anything other than average to mediocre for at least Q2 and Q3 in 2015.
Once again we see local sawmills offering price points that at least match and if not exceed those available at the wharf gate. However it is also important to note the local sawmills prefer the best logs in the forest or woodlot. This reflects the local focus on producing lumber for the Christchurch house framing market. Because the cartage distance is generally less to the local sawmill than the port, the forest owner can expect the best prices for this target market. Of some concern is to see the local mills almost starving for logs with some having to manage usage and supply on a day to day basis. This disturbing situation is related to forest and woodlots of lower quality being harvested and therefore a lesser percentage of higher grade logs. It is also related to a reducing forest cut, as the wind damage recovery programme draws to a conclusion.
FOREST & WOODLOT OWNERS
If you are considering harvesting or have problem trees that need removal, We have crews looking for work.
Local sawmill prices for framing grade logs are continuing to hold in the $100+ per tonne mark. Meanwhile on the export front, CIF (landed in China) settlements have following the earlier predicted path. In February the indicator A grade settlements were mostly US$2 either side of US$125 per cubic metre, whilst March prices have been hovering between US$120 and $117. This drop reflects prices now in a 10year low on a CIF (landed in China in US$) basis. The NZ wharf gate situation has been much less pronounced with now some of the lowest shipping costs in 15 years and a declining US$/Kiwi$ exchange rate ensuring prices on a NZ$ basis have remained in a $5 per cubic metre band. The situation in China is as critical to the NZ sawmiller as it is to the log exporter. If China prices continue to drop then the harvest volumes can also be expected to decline as forest owners close their gates. This will inevitably
starve the local sawmills of logs unless they can find a way to compete in the lower quality export log segment. This situation is mirrored in China, where current domestic log supply will falter if NZ and Australia log prices drop to the US$110 mark. Harvest of forests in China is a significant proportion of the total cut and China has very large costs for domestic logs including often carting them over long distances. It is for this reason we believe the current situation is nearing the bottom of the current cycle. The big issue for both sides at present is that the current situation in China is not log price but demand. For a China sawmill owner the majority of cutting is done to order in a factory style basis. At present post CNY orders have started to come in but they are often small and short term. In this context, if the sawmill does not have any orders, then they will not want logs at any price. It is therefore a major turnaround in demand that everyone is looking out for. I will be in the China market late March so will be able to report more in next month’s report. It continues to be thoroughly important to remember the trees keep growing regardless and peoples of the world continue to need wood for wide ranging reasons. Thus, it has never been more timely to remember, the only way forward for climate, country and the planet is to get out there and plant more trees!

Are you ready for winter? ADVERTORIAL
Time for change Each change of season marks a good time to do a bit of maintenance on pumps and water filtration equipment. At Pump & Purify, we recommend taking the opportunity to see if filters need replacing, give the housings and UV system a clean, and assess whether your system is still meeting your requirements. Filter housings do not need chemical washes. Prepare before shutting off the water by collecting and boiling a quantity of water. Remove the old filters, wash the housings out thoroughly with dishwashing detergent and hot water, flush them thoroughly to eliminate any soap residue, if possible dry in the sunlight, or otherwise with a clean
cloth, and replace the filters. Check all the connectors for any leaks, and if necessary reapply thread seal tape and tighten. No point in wasting water! Using chemicals such as chlorine can introduce contaminants back into new filters, and is in most cases unnecessary if regular maintenance has been performed. Chlorine also breaks down rubber and can damage seals in pumps, and bladders in pressure tanks. Perhaps you do not have a filtration system yet, or only a basic system? Maybe you want to consider adding www.pumpandpurify.co.nz
another stage, or adding UV. After such a hot dry summer, your roof has not had regular ‘washing’ by the rain, tanks will be low, and contaminants sitting in the bottom will get stirred up. This is the perfect time for waterborne bacteria and viruses to be introduced to your drinking water and make you and your family sick. Sediments and

Are you ready for winter? Firewood season The difference between a good and bad fire this winter could be as simple as purchasing and storing firewood correctly.
Make sure your household is not left out in the cold and get wood supplies early. Correct storage and good quality wood is important to ensure the best performance and heat from your fire. To store firewood well, large bits of wood should be split into smaller pieces. Stack the wood with the bark at the bottom or remove bark, so the moisture can evaporate. Store in a covered, well-ventilated area with a roof or tarpaulin. When properly dry it weighs less, has cracks in the ends and makes a clear clunk when two pieces are hit together. If the wood is not dry enough it can be
hard to light and produce more smoke than heat. Seasoned firewood is easier to start, produces more heat, and burns cleaner. Although it might cost more, the extra heat that dried wood provides should outweigh the extra cost. Woods high in resin content like pine are best mixed with harder woods to prevent buildup of deposits in the chimney. It is very important to have a qualified chimney service technician inspect chimneys annually, and clean as necessary. This reduces the risk of fires and carbon monoxide poisonings due to creosote build-up or obstructions.
Tank maintenance With the changing of seasons upon us, now is a good time to clean the water tanks out before refilling to minimise contamination.
It is recommended water tank systems are cleaned every six to 12 months including the guttering. The tank can be disinfected by applying half a cup of household bleach per 1,000 litres of water. Leave it in the tank for a few hours before flushing to waste. Clearing your tank of debri should usually
only consist of collecting any plant or animal matter that may have fallen in. Sediment should be pushed to the bottom of the tank and removed through a vacuum system or pump. An inverted funnel or pool vacuum cleaner can also be used by moving it across the floor of the tank.

Ditching the old push-mower is often seen as the best decision many lifestyle block owners have ever made, as it frees up time to appreciate the great outdoors rather than spending hours taming it. But what happens when it’s not just manicured turf you need? Enter the Kubota BX 2370 — a whole new breed of small utility tractor, which goes from ground maintenance to all-round tractor duties effortlessly. What’s more, Kubota’s little powerhouse comes with the added advantage of diesel power — 23 horses under the hood for far more than just chopping grass down to size. With a compact design, the BX series can fit into tight spaces. It’s nimble turning circle and low weight mean that it is well suited to garden duties where a bigger machine would tear up the turf. But the seriously powerful three-cylinder diesel mill under the hood can make short work of far more than just your average lawn. Full-sized tractor features such as optional roll-over protection and work lights, and hydraulic power steering make this a serious heavy hitter. As well as a mid-mounted mower deck which combines heavy duty blades with roomy ground clearance, the BX 2370
is able to be fitted with implements usually only seen on its bigger ‘cousins’ — such as a fully featured front end loader and a backhoe. The addition of these add-ons makes the little machine into a small orange version of the mighty JCB. There’s even the option to attach a rotary sweeper or a dozer blade. Many farms straddle the boundary between what was traditionally seen as
a lifestyle block, and what is, in truth, a small-scale productive agri-business. For these properties, versatility is the key. A large tractor may already take pride of place in the shed on such a farm, but when it’s time to consider a second machine for utility, the Kubota BX series is a smart idea, replacing a small conventional tractor and a ride-on for truly all-purpose use.

Reliable record with staying power by Andy Bryenton
The small SUV sector of the market has grown hugely in recent years, to the detriment, perhaps of that old favourite the big station wagon or roomy sedan. While many unfairly view contenders like BMW’s X3 and Toyota’s RAV4 as mere imitations of their ‘big brother’ stablemates — like the Range Rover and Land Cruiser — there’s no denying the versatility of a machine which can effortlessly switch from town sophistication to country ruggedness. Doing their part to shed the preconception of smaller sport utilities as off-road lightweights is the Sportage, a mid-sized offering from the forwardthinking Korean auto maker Kia. Having evolved through several generations, the current model has proven not just competent as a ‘shopping cart’ and a vacation escape vehicle, but also as an all-round dependable motor. In fact, the Sportage has topped the prestigious JD Power Vehicle Dependability Study — for the third time. The survey, which is internationally recognised as a fair (if demanding) real world test of toughness tracks a sample of 3-year-old machines, talking to owners who put their daily drivers through the usual rote of work, play and chores. Any problems are reported, with points
deducted from a maximum score for any breakdowns or failures. Kia are pleased to have received a stunning report card, with the Sportage coming out ahead of its contemporaries in terms of surviving the hard knocks real life can throw at a vehicle — something it’s hard to simulate on the test track. “The JD Power VDS award reinforces Kia’s ongoing commitment to quality and dedication to craftsmanship in building world-class products,” says Todd McDonald, General Manager of Kia Motors New Zealand. “The Sportage is a clear example of how far the entire Kia model range has progressed and this level of quality is tangible evidence of our long-term strategy to enhance the Kia ownership experience.” Our pick for a test drive would have to be the two-litre LX Diesel AWD, which delivers plenty of space for the whole family, alongside the all-wheel-drive
power to make short work of country driving conditions. It’s a measure of Kia’s belief in the durability of this vehicle — borne out by JD Power’s survey — that they offer a
comprehensive five year warranty with every new Sportage, making it a wise choice for those who know what kind of curve balls the real world can throw at a Kiwi family’s set of wheels.

Green machines a versatile choice by Andy Bryenton
There was a wealth of agricultural power on display at the recent Northland Field Days, with machines manufactured in many nations competing for attention from the farming public. But, as at immense agricultural expos such as Europe’s giant Agritechnica, one of the most noticeable brands was liveried in smart green and black. Deutz Fahr’s range of tractors lived up to their reputation as the ‘Mercedes Benz of Farming’, displaying a range which covered a wide scope of applications, from row cropping through to the toughest tasks in pasture management. It was little surprise that the big German marque put on a good showing. Their 9 series of large 270-hp-plus machines have just received the award for best design in the coveted European Golden Tractor competition. That same philosophy of meticulous engineering is apparent in the smaller, more versatile 5 and 6 series tractors which excited a lot of attention at our local Field Days. This may be because of the advances in fuel economy, power, stability and ease of operation which have marked
QUADTRUCK
out Deutz Fahr as a market leading innovator. Certainly, these machines are made to pass the very stringent European Union emissions standards, and do so with a suite of technological engine advancements which also aim to save fuel. There’s also the fact that the ‘Mercedes Benz’ comparison also extends to the comfort and logical layout of the 5 and 6 series’ cab — a place where spending hours behind the controls seems a lot less like a chore. With tractors in the ‘mid range’ horsepower band a popular choice with farmers looking for a versatile, multi-role machine, it’s good to know that, at Deutz Fahr at least, top-tier technologies aren’t just lavished on the big 300hp beasts at the top of the intensive farming line. Awards, as Deutz Fahr knows, come and go, and there are always more to strive for.

DAIRY ADVERTORIAL
Foreword for ‘Homeopathic Handbook for Dairy Farming, 3rd Edition, Revised and Expanded’ January 2015 It has been 13 years since I wrote the foreword to the 2nd edition and 18 since I wrote the first one for this practical and useful resource. This new edition is ‘choc-a-block’ and enriched extensively due to the thousands of interactions between Homeopathic Farm Support (HFS) and its clients for nearly two decades. It is generally wise to question the process of ‘reinventing the wheel’, unless you can improve upon the basic design. In this instance, I would compare the 1st edition to the original Ford Model T that was revolutionary in its day and remains a classic but does not compare to Ford’s latest models in terms of speed, efficiency, bells and whistles etc. This new edition shows continuity with its heritage but is so enhanced and packed with new innovations and improved formatting as to be nearly unrecognisable from its first ‘model’. Question: What’s New in the 3rd Edition? Answer: ‘Heaps’. The 3rd edition is packed with references to over 50 more animal preparations in the Materia Medica (alphabetical listing of ‘medical materials’ used in dairy homeopathy); 40 additions to the Animal Ailments section; a new and revised Quick Reference and an all-new-stand-alone-yet-complementary-to the main book, section for owners of dry stock and steers, ‘Maintenance Guidelines for Dry Stock’. These new and expanded materials are included because they have come out of the experience of Tineke Verkade, her dedicated staff and their thousands of clients around New Zealand who have been using homeopathic and herbal products to tackle acute health issues
on conventional, bio-dynamic and organic farms. It is informed by effective responses to seasonal challenges and ‘constitutional’ predispositions in dairy herds (and dry stock too) by using homeopathy and herbal preparations. This edition includes suggested solutions for specific current issues such as Thelleria ticks and environmental stresses such as Alligator weed and Kikuya as well as Liver fluke (Fasciola) and a nosode made from the bacteria that causes woody tongue (Acintonysis). It also gives indications for great maintenance tools developed specifically by HFS in response to the needs of farmers: Natural Teat Conditioner (and Teat Spray); Herbal Digestive Drench and the classic, Farmers’ Hand Cream. It also provides a calendar to recommend interventions throughout the year to help farmers stay ahead of and on top of seasonal

challenges. All of this is strongly rooted and grounded in experience and feedback. A taster of feedback from consumers is included in the endorsement section. These show the great affection clients have for HFS and their satisfaction from finding natural solutions to real challenges with their animal’s health. Author, Tineke Verkade provides a unique perspective as a trained nurse, teacher, naturopath, herbalist, homeopath for people, and specialist in animal homeopathy. Her experience of over 40 years as a health professional in the conventional and complementary realms is brought to bear in her books and seminars. This 3rd edition of ‘Homeopathic Handbook for Dairy Farming’ is her 8th book and like its predecessors will become a well thumbed and valued reference. Tineke is to be commended for the ‘continuity of care’ that she provides for her patients and clients. Tineke and her knowledgeable, long serving HFS staff have been providing support to farmers and their animals since 1997. Thousands of happy clients and tens of thousands of successful outcomes are the result of the careful and attentive service of Tineke and HFS. So I commend Tineke, the HFS staff, and this great resource book to those who love and care for cows and cattle too. HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING
Two secrets to healthy hooves We all know that having a healthy herd is paramount to good business. There is also the feel good factor knowing that you are looking after your animals. A key part of herd health is the hoof. We all know that a cow with a damaged hoof can spell disaster. So how do we combat this? The answer is to take a holistic approach to healthy hooves. Below are two important points that help avoid lameness. Firstly, nutrition is a key element in the equation. We have all heard the saying ‘you are what you eat’. Well this is not quite the same with dairy cows, but you could say that the better the food (or nutrition) the healthier your dairy cows will be. This in turn means that your cows’ hooves are also going to be healthier. There is common perception that hoof damage is caused by rough tracks and constant walking to and from the milking sheds. However, we now know that this is incorrect. Hoof damage starts from the inside out — not from the outside in. This is where nutrition comes into play. If your dairy cows are in optimal condition then their hooves will be strong and healthy and be able to resist the normal wear and tear of everyday walking. This is not to say that having good, well maintained tracks and sheds doesn’t aid in the prevention of lameness. Research shows that tracks with a higher crown through the middle help to reduce the amount of lameness. A holistic or combined approach is always best. However, the main point is, proper nutrition is very important. The best method of feeding is one that avoids rumen upset. Careful phasing of the herd between feed types will help to avoid this problem. Secondly, curbing excessive hoof growth
FT
is also a key element in the equation. Let’s face it a dairy cow weighs a lot. Each hoof has to hold a lot of weight. On each hoof the weight burden is spread between the two claws. You can imagine that if one claw becomes higher than the other then the weight will be unevenly distributed — the higher claw will carry more weight. And what happens when that single claw starts to be put under more pressure? It grows even more — to try and cope with the extra weight. Eventually the higher claw will start to buckle and falter under the extra weight resulting in lameness. This is where hoof maintenance comes into play. We call it preventative trimming. Hoof trimming ensures that both claws on each hoof are even and in the best shape for distributing the weight equally. Without correct trimming lameness can be rampant amongst dairy herds, leading to lots of lost production. In summary it is important to remember that correct nutrition is

From Rob Cochrane GM, Procurement, PGG Wrightson Wool
Lamb’s wool the eye of the storm Rain was welcomed in the areas where it did fall recently, albeit only a tease for many, however there will be some places within the reading area which experienced the remnants of tropical cyclone Pam, but hopefully did not experience too much damaging wind along with the wet. showed extremely keen interest in those types. At levels not witnessed in a very long time, crossbred lamb’s wool has been well sought by the buying trade

with best prices paid for well prepared lines, showing little or no sign of seconds (skirtings) within the main body wool. Having said that, 2nd lambs have, until very recently, reached levels not too far below those attained for the good body wool as buyers have obviously been pressured, by forward sales, to buy. Crossbred fleece prices have also remained firm, on a type for type basis, over the past few weeks despite the wild fluctuations experienced as the Kiwi dollar has swooped and soared like a scrap of paper in a windstorm. A feature noted by many in the wool trade during past weeks, has been the quality of fleece wool coming forward mainly from southern areas of the South Island. At this time of year a much poorer colour is expected in wools from further south, however this year to date, most wools have been of good washing

colour with very few lines of yellow fleece obvious. This has also been instrumental in those poorer types, which have been offered, realising prices very close to the better colour wools. Cotted fleeces have also been a relative rarity in the auction arena, something of a surprise to brokers and buyers when such a good lambing (both in drop and survival) was experienced during springtime, signalling that ewes were in tip-upholstery, to insulation, and tennis ball felt. Whilst several of the products don’t offer the same ‘sexiness’ portrayed by some competitors, many contracts to supply have been in place for a considerable number of years whilst others are relatively new and innovative. Wool growers are advised to talk to a PGG Wrightson wool representative to ensure all opportunities are explored. As well as a myriad of forward contracts, the extremely efficient and cost effective PGG Wrightson wool auction provides a regular opportunity for growers to showcase their wool samples to the widest possible range of buyers where they (buyers) can view the samples and attend the auction, all within the same building. Selling New Zealand wool in New Zealand is the best way to ensure full value is obtained. That’s my view.

RURAL WOMEN
Cuppa leads to great mix Where to house the new community olive press was the hot topic of conversation when president of Awana Rural Women’s group, Gendie Somerville-Ryan, met with Carol and Trevor Rendle of Barrier Olive Growers Ltd. The Great Barrier Island branch of Rural Women NZ owns its own premises, which at the time was undergoing a major upgrade. Their garage, it seemed, would make the perfect place for an olive press — and after a cup of coffee, the olive press had a new home. “Awana Rural Women activities encourage community co-operation and development and what better way to demonstrate this than to help promote economic growth through horticulture,” said Mrs Somerville-Ryan. “Our facilities are centrally located, of a high standard, and well-known around Great Barrier Island. “Housing the olive press is very much in line with our philosophy of helping the community to help itself through education, personal development and
building community capacity. It’s a winwin for everyone.” The community olive press was officially opened by Hon Nikki Kaye, MP for Great Barrier (and Auckland Central), who acknowledged the perseverance and hard work of everyone involved in getting the project off the ground. “The reason this co-operative approach has worked on the Barrier is that so many people contribute. The olive press is important for economic reasons — it gives people another option to stay on the Island,” said Ms Kaye. A recent survey showed that there are over 600 olive trees already fruiting on Great Barrier Island but developing an industry from the olives was impractical if fruit had to be shipped off the Island for pressing. Barrier Olive Growers has now purchased the press and
growers will be able to press their fruit for a nominal charge — hopefully kickstarting an olive oil ‘export’ industry for the Barrier. Awana Rural Women can see a great future for Barrier olive oil, from an
olive oil festival to an olive picking and pressing experience. The first step however, is to get the 2015 vintage harvested and pressed — and enjoyed by those on the Barrier and beyond.

Don’t let stress take your health Farming today can be very stressful, not only physically but mentally too. Stress is a major contributory cause of disease in the body. Why? Because stress can affect the digestive system and nutritional absorption. The bowels are the engine of our health, important for good gut health and nutritional absorption, essential for a strong immune system. Sleep patterns are affected by the mind’s inability to switch off. Joints and muscles can ache and twitch, energy levels can drop. The body’s ability to cope with stress is different for each of us and dependent on many factors. Your body gives many signals that something is wrong, but most of us do not recognise these messages. Take the guess work out of staying healthy with hemaview live blood screening and hair analysis. Through a tiny drop of blood you can see the affect your lifestyle choices and stress are having on your health. Your hair can show nutritional deficiencies, stress triggers, allergic sensitivities, even the effects of electromagnetic fields that bombard our body from the many technological advances in our lives today.

Kinsey Soil Fertility Course
Neal Kinsey is returning to New Zealand explaining the essentials and finer points of soil fertility. He will be at Cambridge from 29th June to 3rd July and then in Ashburton, hosted by Golden Bay Dolomite and Kiwi Fertiliser. The starting point at Cambridge is trace elements. Many farmers’ soil tests do not even measure them; so they are not applied. Is it any wonder some farms frequently have costly animal health problems? There will be good advice on offer for farmers and reps involved in all types of farming and growing. Dr Linus Pauling, winner of two Nobel Prizes, stated: “In my opinion, one can trace every sickness, every disease and every ailment to mineral deficiency.” If you accept this statement, then improvements can be made in the following areas by improving fertiliser practices: Stock health; insect problems (including ticks and mites) on stock, pastures and crops; bacterial and fungal diseases; dipping, drenching and dagging regimes; fruit and vegetables that do not keep; fruit and vegetables that don’t taste at all good; kauri die-back; Psa of kiwifruit; weeds including YBG; the need to
inoculate silage; or the fact that large areas of pasture have to be re-grassed each year. One test for a dairy farmer is the effluent pond. If it is anaerobic, it will have a tendency to crust over and require constant and costly maintenance. If it is aerobic, no such problems will be observed. The pond is a reflection of the health of the rest of the property. If it is not healthy, then neither are the soil or the stock. All the above problems are related to soil fertility and can be mitigated to a greater or a lesser degree. The course will cover all essential trace elements including silicon; plus nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, compost, carbon, calcium, magnesium, and much more. Prior to the course itself, we have the opportunity to visit properties carrying out the principles of correct soil fertility. These properties have not been on the system very long, but have already showed clear improvements. For more information go to goldenbaydolomite. co.nz or kiwifertiliser.co.nz for details and registration.

Here’s Sharlene then. “Well, Billy a farmer invented this. He was driving down a country road an’ saw a tortoise ona fence post. He asked the farmer working in the paddock w h a t it was. The farmer sed, that’s a post tortoise. Same thing as a politician!
“That millions of munny could pay fer hundrids of operations in hostibals, an’ feed heeps of hungry kids, an all that,” he sed, an’ Sharlene agreed. “Anyway,” she sed, its blimmin Anzac, and me granddad got killed ina War under our flag. They put tha flag on his coffin, and then gave it ter me Mum. Mum’s got it ona wall at her retiremint home. Bluddy madniss this new flag idea.” Woah, readas, she muss be serious ‘cos she duzzin’t rilly swear much. Anyway, thena Boss an’ her got on about that John Kambill getting a bums rush froma TV bossis.
“You know he didn’t get up there by himself, he doesn’t belong up there, he doesn’t know what to do while he’s up there, he’s elevated beyond his ability to function, and you just wonder who the hell put him up there to begin with!” Well, readas, Boss hada reel good chuckil at that. But he still sed that John Ki shud pay more attenshin to peeple than flags.
“Yeah, ratings rubbish,” Boss sed. “If a few less peepil watch Kambill Live, ya can bet that the one’s that do watch, they are a bit more discerning and selective than them that’s watching alla rubbish on other channils. Ya’d reckin’ sensibil advertisers would see that.’ Tell yer wot dog, talkin’ about flags. Mite as well flag tha TV away as well?” Heh heh heh. Yeah Rite! C’mon Boss. Crickit Werld Kup mite be finished. But Rugby?? — it’s wide-screen time ina woolshed eh? Gotta go readas. Billy
