“The Ministry for the Environment quite correctly states ‘The ETS is New Zealand’s main tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions — so it’s important it is a credible and wellfunctioning scheme that helps us meet our climate change targets’,” says Forest Owners Association president, Peter Weir. “To date, the ETS has been applied inconsistently and is relatively ineffective in bringing emissions down and promoting afforestation to sequester atmospheric carbon. Meanwhile higher land prices have stifled most afforestation efforts.” He says a significant inclusion in the discussion is that of the retention of carbon in what are termed harvested wood products. “The current scheme makes no allowance for the fact that carbon remains locked up in timber for potentially longer than the life of the tree it was produced from. This is recognised internationally, but here in New Zealand, it doesn’t flow through for the benefit of forest growers or wood processors. “We are uncertain so far of how a proposed ‘cost containment reserve’ price ceiling mechanism might work to replace the current ceiling of $25 per tonne. Mindful of the Productivity Commission’s recommendation of a meaningful carbon price a rigid cap at $25 per tonne, it’s not going to change behaviour. One attractive element of the ETS revision is an option to include averaging. This is where a carbon price is set for forests, which allow for the fact that they are in continuous production. “Tailored adjustments to smooth the credits and liabilities and to lower risk are changes FOA has pursued for some

Peter Weir, Forest Owners Association president

time and would make the ETS a more attractive option, particularly for owners of small forests, than is currently the case.” Farm Forestry Association president, Neil Cullen, believes it is important the ETS is capable of delivering real results with encouragement for more trees to be planted, especially on farmland. “Farmers looking at planting trees are nervous about the prospects of the government distorting the carbon market, as they have in the past. Farmers would like to know what the likely range of the carbon price will be over five-year periods,” he says. “They would like smaller woodlots to be included in the ETS. They need a system, which is inclusive of all forestry, and is straightforward and easy to understand before they will significantly commit to more trees on their farms.” Forest owners are encouraged to read the consultation documents to better understand the proposal for carbon averaging.

New Zealand’s export earnings from seafood are on the rise, with aquaculture leading the way with the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Situation and Outlook report predicting earnings will grow from $1.8 billion to $2.1 billion by June 2022. “Aquaculture is set to be the main driver for the forecast growth, thanks largely to increased mussel harvests, and higher prices as demand continues to grow in key markets,” says Fisheries minister, Stuart Nash. “We expect hatchery-bred spat to be a boon for mussel production. We are already seeing better mussels as a result of hatchery spat produced through the SPATnz Primary Growth Partnership programme. We are also seeing salmon production increasing with three new farms operating in the Marlborough Sounds.” “Aquaculture export earnings are forecast to reach $430 million this year and reach nearly $600 million in 2022. Export earnings for New Zealand’s wild capture fish products are expected to reach $1.4 billion this year and climb to $1.5 billion in 2022. “We expect to see higher prices as a result of more people wanting to eat fish and reduced global supply due to China’s plans to reduce its catch,” says Mr Nash. “It is clear the environmental credibility of our seafood products will be a vital factor in our export success. The Marine Stewardship Council has certified many of our fisheries as sustainable. Further certification of

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Ann van Engelen

Helen and Derek Melser planted a small olive grove in the Wairarapa Valley with the understanding that warm summers and cold winters would provide ideal growing conditions for their 250 trees.

“T

he property originally had cattle, and we cleared them off for the grove. A lot of people were planting olives for oil at the time, but we planted them for pickling,” says Helen. Olives quickly became a passion as the couple discovered the many health benefits of the olive fruit, oil and leaf. “While our grove was maturing, I decided to see the olive in its traditional surroundings in France, Crete, Croatia, Spain, Italy, Morocco, Greece, China and Syria and talked to growers, tasted countless olives and oils, was given family recipes and lots of wonderful advice. It was heaven for an olive lover. “World expert on olive tree diseases, Dr Vera Sergeeva, has said some people in Australia over spray and such groves

are now unable to cope on their own. We grow along organic lines, without pesticides, fungicides or artificial fertilisers — we use a seaweed spray and prune once a year.” Helen completed a herbal diploma and through this she discovered the health and well-being benefits of the olive leaf. “We began experimenting with olive products including marinades, tapenades, pestos, pasta sauces and salads — there are not many recipes we have not tried. Some ideas worked, and others definitely did not. One, which did, and is very popular is my dessert olive. “Sweet olives are not new — the Cretans cured them in salt, honey, grape must and sweet wine. The French Tanche are beautiful as is the crisp,

83-year-old and a 40-year-old grower to join our team to represent New Zealand. They are hoping this becomes an annual event to celebrate the industry. “I stood on the Greek island of Crete beside the Vouves tree, which is estimated to be more than 3,000 years old and I look tiny compared to it.” Helen says people in Mediterranean countries chew the leaves for a toothache and use as a mouthwash. “It certainly worked for Derek for four days when we couldn’t get to a dentist. “Drinking fresh olive leaf juice, which is made with water in a blender and left to infuse then strained, is also very refreshing. It can also be used as a skin and scalp tonic, antifungal and can help with infections.” Harvesting involves booking into the local olive press and gathering a group of friends to help. “We have big rakes to rake the fruit from the branches and mats to gather the fruit on to. You have to get the fruit to the press that day or the morning after because they can’t be left lying around as they get hot and the quality deteriorates.” Helen says if kept overnight, they are best on a mat on the floor in the garage in one layer to keep cool. “Many growers in Masterton win awards for quality and this is thanks to the pressing company’s expertise and cleanliness — it is all very relevant. “I can harvest anything from green to black and rosy to crimson; you get varying colours — depending on where the sun is. They can be strong, bitter, mellow, medium and sweet. The

I love experimenting, and I have written a booklet called Tasting the Olive, which includes recipes for the olive flower, fruit, oil and leaf. “I am now focussing on promoting olive leaf tea, and my hope is that it will soon be accepted in the same way as green tea. Research is showing the olive leaf has the potential to be one of the main health and well-being medicines of the future.

“Olive leaf extract has been proven by the Liggins Institute in Auckland, to lower blood pressure and cholesterol and it is said to have antifungal, bacterial, viral and parasitic properties. There are about 100 different compounds in a leaf, and huge amounts of research are being done. The oil, fruit and the flower are used in bach natural remedies — it has potential to be a future antibiotic. We are lucky to have so many topquality olive groves here in New Zealand, who can provide us with all the wonderful products of the olive tree. I am excited that they are coming into their own now and helping people across the world. We love the olive — it is an undervalued food source.”

Fulfilment in feijoas by Ayla Miller

When Heather Smith moved to New Zealand 22 years ago from Vermont, USA, she had never tasted feijoas before. Now she is making these small green fruit her life.

T

he first time Heather tried feijoas she knew she was onto something special. “If you asked most people in the states what a feijoa was they would never have heard of them,” she said. After some research she discovered New Zealand had the ideal growing conditions for these juicy green fruit and planted 2000 feijoa trees on her 680 acre property. As the fruit originally comes from South America few of their original pests have followed them, which makes them ideal to grow organically. “We are certified BioGro — number 4868 — and we get a premium for our

products. We have been working towards a genetically modified organism (GMO) free New Zealand as the market is demanding it more and more,” she says. Heather grew up rurally in the United States and has what she calls a ‘green background.’ “I was exposed to cows and chickens when I was younger and I went on to study biology. My grandfather was a farmer so it’s in my blood.” She was drawn to the idea of running an orchard as they create a habitat for birds and biodiversity is a top priority for Heather. Passing on this respect for the environment is another passion. She

All her products are 100 per cent New Zealand grown, gluten free, GMO free and full of nutrition. The range includes: freeze dried feijoas, frozen feijoas, freeze dried feijoa powder, puree, juice concentrate and even Heather’s feijoa hydrosol/essence which makes an effective facial toner and due to antifungal and antibacterial properties, can be used as a deodorant. As well as running the orchard, Heather

and her farm manager also run sheep, beef, free-range chickens and collects eggs for the local market. The farm practises mob grazing, which is an intensive rotational grazing system based on the idea of grazing a large amount of cattle on a small amount of land, for a very short period of time. Heather says there is a lot of new research coming out about the health benefits of feijoas. “It feels like we are right around the corner to discovering all its benefits and I want to put New Zealand on the map like we did with kiwi fruit, but this time with feijoa.”

Stemcells to

THE RESCUE by Ann van Engelen

Jane Bennett grew up on a farm in Te Aroha — is a qualified electrician with a love for horses and is also an equine therapist. She worked hard and played sports until having a major horse riding accident that destroyed her life for many years.

J

ane is adamant that ‘stem cell nutrition support’ helped her body — after living many years in pain with no successful treatments in sight — yet is one of the least known options available. “I want everyone to know my story; I had been active my whole life. We lived on my grandfather’s dairy farm until my parents moved to our own property running sheep. I raised pigs, chickens, calves and had champion pet lambs and was horse mad, and grew up competing against Mark Todd,” says Jane. “I ventured overseas studying and riding horses and returned to New Zealand and set up the first hydrotherapy centres for horses and was very successful.”

At 37 years old Jane had a horrific horse riding accident with the horse rolling on her — resulting in major medical issues and severe damage to much of her body. “The doctors said I was too young for the operations I needed, which included a hip replacement and to come back when I was 50. They sent me away with various bottles of medications plus more pills to counteract the side effects of them. “Nothing helped, and I tried every product sold on TV to help me recover, but they never helped a bit. After seven years of chronic pain and being absolutely desperate I was introduced to ‘stem cell nutrition’ by a homoeopath. This is a natural product that encourages

BERKELEY CLARK, RETIRED Farmed for over 50 years, milking for 15 then sheep and beef “I’ve been on the stem cell products since the august seminar. For years I have had pain in my lower back, ankles and feet and have been limited to very little walking around. Standing was difficult for even short periods. My shoulders were very stiff and sore and I had little range of movement. It took about 4 months before I was sure that things were improving. Im reading more easily and I’m able to be a lot more active. I have less pain walking and standing - I can even manage staircases which is very pleasing. I have flexibility back in my shoulders and can put my hands straight up over my head. Several friends have commented on how well i’m looking - I’m just looking forward to improving even more” JOHN WATTERS, RETIRED FARMER Milked cows for 43 years “One year ago I went to the first Morrinsville seminar mostly out of desperation. I’d tried everything else for many years and nothing worked. My diabetes specialist had told me about stem cell injections so it was good timing. I was injecting insulin 4 times a day so to hear this comes in capsules was great. My main issue besides diabetes is my feet. They were constantly numb. I could cut my foot and not feel anything. After 6 months I noticed the feeling started coming back in my feet. Now I would have at least 35% back! My feet are noticabily warmer and not so grey looking. I’m walking better and with more confidence. I haven’t needed to see my accupuncturist for 6 months. Now she is taking the product too! I’m really pleased my diabetes is also improving. My medication has dropped by nearly 50% at my lunchtime reading and over the whole day by 30%. I’m certainly going to keep taking these products.

DAVE LUNN High Country Deer and Bee Farm, Taumaranui “When I received the flyer about the stem cell seminar last august, I had just filled in the paper work to go ahead with medical procedures on both my knees. I have been in a lot of pain with my knees and had to restrict activities - hunting and sports - and making work difficult. Surgery was going to be a last resort and although the stem cell research I had done looked promising; I was skeptical. The seminar really filled in the blanks for me and I ordered straight away, thinking I would give it 6 months or so. At about the 3 month stage I thought things were changing. I was more comfortable when sleeping and some days the pain was much less. Now that I’ve done 7 months I’m very pleased to say that 95% of my pain is gone! I’m really amazed with the product. I can do so much more, I’m back running around the hills, deer stalking and tending bees. I thought that my age would slow my ability to heal but it wasn’t an issue. I’ll be back on the golf course soon for sure. I’d recommend these products to anyone over 40!”

Stem cells are the only cells in our body capable of repair and renewal, and I am living proof that this works, and I now help others and sell the products because I want others to get their lives back like I did. “I am back to living a normal life and have personally seen many people getting positive results including some with spinal cord injuries, carpal tunnel, Achilles tendon issues, diabetes and arthritis patients. “The National Institute of Health has identified 74 treatable diseases using stem cells in therapy. Your body has an amazing ability to heal itself, but as we get older our stem cells decline, and by 65 years old you only have 10 per cent of what you had at 25. “Stem cell nutrition encourages your body to naturally release million of new cells, which replace damaged cells anywhere in the body so the more you have in your bloodstream — the better to improving your body’s ability to repair itself. “It is scientifically proven to be safe and effective, and it saved my life. Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After more than ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”. Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”.

To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Inversion helps to:

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.

• Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”

Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life alignment it does not last long, the only between the body and a Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when difference muscles are stressed they become tight machine is that the body is constantly which restricts the flow of blood and lymph repairing itself, however if the wear and through the muscles so toxins build up, tear on the body is greater than the body’s to repair itself, it is a slow decline. Traction opens up the ability Teeter slowly brings the body out of its muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle The decline and allows the body to repair itself, rocking motion that stimulates circulation resulting in a far healthier life. and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into If you are serious about investing in your your lymph system where it stimulates health and really sorting your issues out, lymph flow and deals with it. BACK or NECK PAIN? Here in New Zealand,

Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best method to manage back pain, he has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”. *Dr Kanji does not recieve royalties from the sale of Teeter Inversion Tables

The cost of ownership by Jill Dickie

A question most smaller-scale farmers are faced with at some point in their year is “Do I do it myself or get someone in?” A decision can be made with some simple calculations and consideration in weighing up the pros and cons. Farmers should consider whether investing in machinery is affordable for their business, especially the more expensive items such as hay balers, seeders and sprayers, and whether the upgrade will generate further revenue or become a drain on resources. Upgrading or purchasing new equipment has benefits, such as maintaining control of jobs and getting them completed when required, and the individual farmer may also have the skill level required, but at times when there are several jobs demanding attention — it can be easier to call a contractor for assistance. Doing so frees up the farmer’s time for other tasks, and contractors generally have the right tools for the job — and can get the job done faster. Hiring a contractor is also a tax deduction for businesses. There are services available for a range of farm tasks ranging from paddock preparations, crop planting and harvesting to animal management and husbandry practices such as lamb and calf marking, crutching and shearing.

The costs of repair and maintenance, as well as registration and overall care of plant and machinery, falls on the contractor. On the other hand, at times of peak demand, such as haymaking, for example, a contractor can be held up or run behind schedule, or bad weather may affect the job’s completion, resulting in penalties for the farmer. Building a good relationship with a reliable contractor is essential to success, as is working in with neighbours to secure several jobs for the contractor while in the area. Ownership costs are relatively high if a machine is only used for a short time during the year, such as a hay baler, but some implements, for instance, a tractor, can be used often, so there may be a ‘break even’ point when the cost is calculated over a per hectare basis. When evaluating machinery options, farmers should not only consider the capital cost of the equipment — but also their seasonal challenges and the risk of delays in getting the job done on time.

Great fence, man! by Jill Dickie

There is not much better to a farmer’s eye than looking down a straight fence line, all the posts in perfect position, no tops poking one way or another, and all the same height. A simple feat to achieve? Not if your fencing contractor doesn’t have the skills! It’s important to choose someone who will do the job you want done. You need to be specific about your needs, and these needs may vary depending on the location of the fence. For example, a new fence along your driveway, or that is visible every time you look out your house window; you are going to want that completely perfect, compared to a short length down on the back boundary that you mostly look at from the paddock as opposed to down the line. You will need to establish with your contractor whether they are supplying all materials for a complete job, or whether they will use items you already have available, which would save you money on the job. If you already have a box of fencing staples in the shed or three to four rolls of clean wire — there is no point in them supplying those for the job. Next, are they collecting the required materials and bringing to the job or is it feasible for you to provide what they need? It may be another cost saver for you. Arranging payment terms is another consideration. Do they require some of

the payment up front to purchase posts, or will they invoice you the total amount at completion? Will that payment be required within seven days or on 20th of next month? One more thing to think about — does your neighbour need any work done? It could be worth asking, particularly if either of you only have a small job needing done, as it may save

the contractor some running around with their post driver! When the job is complete, and you can cast an eye down that tidy new fence, you’ll appreciate the money invested in not doing the job yourself and consequently annoyed at the one post that leans the wrong way!

Hillsides of gold

Avoid Drink Driving

by Jill Dickie

It is a view that farmers definitely do not want to see — their precious farmland returned to gorse scrub — and completely eradicating it is an ongoing challenge. Gorse is a particularly stubborn plant to remove permanently, as it thrives in poor soils and its seeds remain viable for around 40 years. Burning can be successful but needs to be done with accuracy regarding temperature and depth into the soil. Ploughing often doesn’t have a huge success rate, as cultivating the soil aids the germination process, and the resulting acidity of the soil means few other plants or trees will do well. There are many organic ways of trying, some of which actually work, though take some patience and persistence. For example, small plants can be grubbed out successfully if the entire root crown is removed, or running sheep through followed by goats will graze the soft seedlings although work will need to be done in controlling the regrowth, and they will not eat the more mature parts of the plant. Biological control is another method, though a very long-term project, and researchers believe this method could take up to 50 years to achieve a favourable result. An efficient and fast way to remove the gorse plants is to use an appropriate weedkiller, and depending on the area and location a contractor may be required. There is an obvious cost involved in this option, in paying for the spray

027 493 2079 and the service if the landowner is not in a position to do it themselves. A contractor may use any of several options for application, from small spray units behind a bike or tractor to the use of a helicopter for efficient coverage over a large area. There may still be a small amount of regrowth if some plants don’t receive enough herbicide, and a repeat procedure may be required, but persistence and perseverance should prove productive.

Helping sore joints

by John Arts

At any given time I am helping hundreds of people improve their joint health. My goal is to help prevent further cartilage loss, reduce inflammation and improve the function of the joint. In most cases, we can get significant improvements in joint comfort and mobility. I have one client who was referred to an orthopaedic specialist with suspected OA in his left knee. It was sore, stiff and swollen. He had X-rays, which confirmed that there was significant cartilage loss and changes to the bones of the joint. His right knee caused him no problems, but the specialist decided to X-ray that one as well. What he found was that arthritis in his ‘good’ right knee had more cartilage loss than the sore one. You would wonder how that could be. How can moderate arthritis cause significant pain while the worst knee did not? The answer is probably inflammation. The sore knee was obviously inflamed. It was swollen (puffy), stiff and very sore. The more degenerated right knee had no swelling and no pain. After a few months, his sore knee is much improved. The body can be quite cynical at times. The normal way damaged tissue is healed is through initiating the process of inflammation. In simple

terms, blood vessels allow more fluid into the damaged area — it causes swelling and pain. I have found that OA symptoms are caused as much by inflammation than actual cartilage loss. The first step is to reduce inflammation. We do this by adding omega-3 from oily fish and antiinflammatory antioxidants especially curcumin from turmeric. The second thing is to add therapeutic amounts of chondroitin sulphate and glucosamine sulphate to stabilise cartilage. Chondroitin is most important as it is an actual constituent of cartilage but only at levels of 800mg plus daily. Initially, I like to target 1,500mg to help get faster results. Feel free to contact me for personalised advice. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Time to get a prostate check

It’s Blue September again, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation is getting the message out to Kiwi men to get checked for prostate cancer.

Research shows that rural men in New Zealand are not good at getting checked. That needs to change. Early detection is the key. With one in eight men getting prostate cancer, diagnosing the disease early and getting effective treatment saves lives. That’s the central message this Blue September. Don’t wait for symptoms. A recent survey has shown that 61% of men diagnosed had no symptoms, so getting a routine check is very important. Farmlands has joined the fight against prostate cancer this year as Blue September sponsors along with AGPAC supplying blue silage wrap. Up and down the country people are organising Blue Dos. Farmers, tradies, workmates and radio hosts are all getting in on the act. You can check out the website for upcoming events and get ideas for your own Blue Do. Perhaps you fancy a blue breakfast, a blue BBQ or a blueberry bake-off? Or organise a Blue

Friday like many workplaces organise. It gets people involved in dressing up, preparing some novelty food and focusses on awareness of the number one cancer in Kiwi men. More than 600 die from it every year. It doesn’t need to be that way. Jason Gunn has joined the great team of Blue September Ambassadors — he tells how his Dad was diagnosed with the disease and how hard it was to talk about it, and what the prospects might be. Fortunately for them — the outcome was good. Family members can be a great incentive and encouragement for the men in their family to go to the GP and get a check. Don’t leave it to the men — they are often a bit slack in looking after their health. If they won’t go to get a check themselves, make an appointment and get them along. DAIRY ADVERTORIAL

Giving calves an added boost Dynavyte offers a product, which has the ability to work wonders on the inside for calves and other animals — Microbiome Support (MBS), an oral liquid pro and prebiotic. Dynavyte NZ owner, Jeremy Clark, said MBS was used to promote a healthy gut, which may promote rumen development and was a natural immune booster and has antiinflammatory components. “The big thing is — it has the ability to promote rumen development so that calves can be weaned heavier or earlier.’’ Past users of the product have found it to reduce

mortality rates, and while it was a reasonably new product to the calf market, feedback from farmers already using MBS has been that their calves are growing bigger and healthier, Jeremy said. One example from a local farmer who raised calves — was having two neighbours with rotavirus — but their farm was using MBS and never got it, she said.

In the North Island, weather conditions could also cause problems at calving and some farmers had found that using MBS on the calves, which were a bit down or tired, had provided a much-needed pick-me-up for them. “It can pick up lambs and other newborn livestock that look like they aren’t going to make it’’ Jeremy said. MBS is soluble — so is easy to mix in with milk. Using MBS will be beneficial in stabilising the microflora in the gut, which may lead to an improvement in the animals behaviour, making them more settled and easier to handle. It also may assist in improving food conversion, which will lead to a reduction in feed costs, as well as supporting cows and calves with their nutritional requirements in times of stress and need. MBS is a gut health product formulated by fermenting humates and kelp. It is highly bioavailable, being readily absorbed into the animal’s system. ”Most of all it is very cost-effective,’’ Jeremy said.

It can be used for all livestock, and some farmers had used it with pigs and goats and working dogs. “For dogs, it speeds up digestion, maximises nutrition, improves coat condition and reduces inflammation,’’ he said. MBS is available in one, five, 10, 20 and 200L options. Jeremy encourages people to order now in time for calving, especially on the larger orders. Dynavyte also has a range of equine products available, including Equiette, which is an anti-anxiety supplement for horses, Tenderfoot, which is a natural herbal formula which may temporarily relieve minor aches, bruising and muscle tenderness and Stop Greasy that addresses issues associated with mud fever. Dynavyte products are available in-store at Farmlands and PGG Wrightson. To find out more, or to order your products for this calving season — call Jeremy Clark 021 586 758 or Warwick Douglas 021 583 355.

Interim CEO announced Fonterra Co-operative Group has announced that Miles Hurrell will take over as the Co-operative’s interim chief executive with immediate effect. Mr Hurrell is currently the cooperative’s chief operating officer, Farm Source — the unit responsible for working directly with farmer-owners. He first joined Fonterra in 2000, and his experience in the dairy industry has spanned four continents, including roles in Europe, the United States, Middle East, Africa and Russia. Fonterra chairman, John Monaghan, says the board is clear that it is not best practice to have the chairman and CEO stand down at the same time, but events have overtaken that decision. “I have agreed with the board that we will stop the global CEO search while we review the co-operative’s current portfolio and direction. It is important that we give ourselves the time to take stock of where we are as

a co-operative, breathe some fresh air into the business, then determine any changes that are needed. “Appointing a new CEO is the most critical decision a board will make. We will take all the time we need to find the right person. “In the meantime, we need a new leader that can hit the ground running. Miles has great mana. He has a deep understanding of our business and has demonstrated his ability to manage large, complex business units in most of our global markets. Miles is wellrespected both within our co-operative and by our key global customers and wider stakeholders. “Our CEO role requires intellect, energy and commitment. Miles brings that in spades.”

Mr Hurrell said he was excited by the challenge and as a proud New Zealander understood the responsibility that comes with the role. “Theo leaves behind a talented leadership team that includes some of the best minds in global dairy. I have been privileged to be part of that group for the last four years, and I am totally confident that, by working as a team, we can deliver on the expectations New Zealand has of us. “As a group, we haven’t always got everything right. Those lessons will be invaluable as we face up to challenges that are in front of us. We are already a number of weeks into our new financial year, so I’m keen to get straight into it and ensure the business lives up to the commitments it has made to Miles Hurrell, Fonterra Co-operative Group’s interim chief executive officer our farmers and unitholders for the year ahead.” Mr Monaghan said the board and Mr Spierings had his contribution over the past eight years agreed it was the right time for him to and farewell him as a co-operative when step down as CEO. Mr Spierings would he leaves the business. “For now, it’s important that we all get work alongside Mr Hurrell to ensure a smooth transition of leadership through in behind Miles. “He’s got a big job to do on behalf to September 1, 2018. of our farmers, unitholders and wider “Theo has led our co-operative through a period of great change and stakeholders. The board has full some real challenges. We will recognise confidence in him.”

THE SHORT DROP LIMITED

Managing in mud Wet and muddy conditions are to be expected on farms at this time of year, and the Ministry for Primary Industries is reminding all pastoral livestock farmers to ensure animals are well cared for on crops and pasture, and seek advice if they need to. “We recognise that this time of year brings many challenges, and managing stocking densities, pasture, break feeding on crops and minimising soil damage are just some of these,” says MPI’s director of Animal Health and Welfare, veterinarian Dr Chris Rodwell. “Farmers must be vigilant to not compromise animal health and welfare during these challenging months of the year. New Zealand’s codes of animal welfare generally require livestock to have access to areas free of surface water and mud and appropriate protection from adverse weather.” Rest and lying time is important to the health and welfare of livestock, not just feed availability and body condition of animals. “Welfare issues may not be immediately obvious. Amongst a number of issues, prolonged time on mud can also cause distress and discomfort, bring on significant and painful animal health issues such as lameness and mastitis, and reduce production and resistance to disease.” MPI recognises that the use of winter crops as a source of good nutritional support to pasture and other feeds

during winter is an important part of livestock feeding in New Zealand extensive farming systems. However, there is a point where animals are adversely impacted by muddy paddocks, and MPI continues to receive complaints. “We urge farmers to seek expert advice and follow good practice to avoid problems. There is some really good

advice available from vets and your sector groups. Spring is stressful for people and animals alike — don’t add to your stress with animal health issues caused by mud,” Dr Rodwell says.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

WORKING WITH YOU

Suzuki has been producing a small, super-compact off-roader under various names for the past 40 years now — the Samurai was the first in this lineage, and the current Jimny is the latest. In between, we’ve seen the boxy, military-jeep inspired form move with the times, but the recipe has remained the same. It’s one beloved of real off-roaders — take a peppy, high-revving engine, add a generous amount of ground clearance, simple, wheel-at-each-corner chassis design, a gearbox and differentials, which can take the hard knocks, and wrap it up in a price which makes the big boys of the off-road world look bloated and expensive. Like the light little Caterham on the race track or the Toyota MR2 on the road, it’s an exercise in cutting right to the core of what a machine should do, then adding absolutely nothing unnecessary. Which brings us to the latest iteration of the Jimny. It has added something, which the outgoing model doesn’t have, inspired, perhaps, by the success of the retro-cool Ignis, also in the Suzuki stable. It looks fantastic. Cute as a button but still sharp-edged and eager, like a Rottweiler puppy or a baby version of Mercedes’ G-Wagen. The crisp, boxy creases and sharp lines

24 7

hint at serious off-road chops, evoking everything from the old Willy’s world war two jeep through to the first edition Toyota Land Cruiser. Moreover, because it’s part of the Samurai-Escudo-Jimny heritage, it has a 1.5 litre four-pot motor, proper fourwheel drive with high and low ratios, and that absurdly lightweight to actually deliver on its promises. For decades, the smallest Suzuki off-roader in the garage has offered

supreme value for money. It’s even been a weapon of choice for serious off-road racers, who value its lightness and power to weight ratio when skipping over mud puddles and hitting terrifyingly steep slopes. Now, Suzuki has added a real sense of retro-inspired cool to the mix, in the same way, Fiat or Mini did when they reinvented their 1960s classics. For practicality and style, this is definitely one to pick!

Another dairy pollution fine An Otorohanga farmer has been convicted and fined a total of $57,000 for discharging dairy effluent into the environment. This hefty fine comes within a week of a $41,000 fine imposed on a Reporoa farmer, also for dairy pollution. Both fines have come about as a result of Waikato Regional Council carrying out prosecutions under the Resource Management Act. These come after a Te Kowhai dairy farmer was convicted and fined $35,625 for allowing large volumes of dairy effluent to overflow into the environment in April. This contamination was identified during a routine inspection by Waikato Regional Council in March 2017 as part of its compliance monitoring programme. In the most recent case, Judge Melanie Harland sentenced farmer Gary Blackler in the Hamilton District Court. Judge Harland noted that the RMA “has Patrick Lynch, Waikato Regional Council’s investigations and been in place for 27 years”, incident response manager and “simply put, there has been ample time for farmers in this property, finding two separate sources region to get to grips with the rules”. of contamination to the stream. In September last year, the council An abatement notice was issued to was alerted by a member of the public the farmer, and a further inspection to a usually clear stream running green carried out in November. and smelling of effluent. This inspection also found a Council incident response staff significant area of ponded effluent were able to track the contaminated that was a risk to groundwater. The stream some distance to the Blackler council’s investigations and incident

response manager, Patrick Lynch, said: “We are very grateful to the person who contacted the council with accurate and timely information about the stream. This enabled us to respond promptly and track the source of the contamination. “Waikato Regional Council takes breaches of the RMA very seriously and will use all of the regulatory tools available to us to bring about positive behaviour change. For those few farmers who continue to let their own industry down, this fine sends a very clear message that unlawful effluent discharges into the environment will not be tolerated.”
