SEPTIC TANK OWNERS How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it.This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs.Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be

operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce SeptiCure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. Prevent septic system problems – treat with Septi-Cure™. For Septi-Cure™ - Call: 0800-109-202 Website: www.ecoworld.co.nz Also Available at

A new series of pamphlets produced by the Waikato Regional Council aim to help property owners better manage potential risks from river flooding.

2 & 12 TONNE

Twenty large rivers and around 1,400 small river systems flow through the Waikato region with many of them prone to flooding. Steep terrain, low-lying flood plains and areas receiving high rainfall all contribute to flood risk in these river systems. The pamphlets have been produced in response to a rise in information requests and general enquiries about river flooding hazards. “River flooding is the most common hazard we face in the Waikato,” said community safety programme manager Adam Munro. “The new pamphlets are designed to help people identify what level of risk their individual properties face and what actions they may need to take to manage that risk.” Mr Munro said the likes of the insurance sector, real estate agents and the wider community have been more active in seeking information about risks generally. “We suspect this may be to do with the number of natural disasters in New Zealand and overseas in recent years which have raised the profile of and need for better hazard management.

“Also, managing river flood risk is expected to become a more important issue in the region as the population increases over coming decades and the impacts of climate change become more evident.” The information provided in the pamphlets covers owning flood prone property, buying flood prone property, the council’s flood warning services, and the Kauaeranga River flood protection scheme in the ThamesCoromandel district. Copies of the pamphlets are accessible online at www.waikatoregion. govt.nz/riverflooding.

An old-fashioned 21ST CENTURY MARKET

The operators of the newest business in Gordonton, The Farm Shop, say they are never going to be millionaires — but add that they never wanted to be.

Partners Tanya Clancy, Kim Clarke, Gemma McGarry and Colin Oliver opened May, taking over part of the old dairy factory, and have not looked back since. Tanya says the whole idea was a dream, but once she and partner Kim started, they had no idea where it would go. “We have corporate backgrounds but were seeking a lifestyle change, and while we are farmers, we also knew that if we didn’t do this now, we never would.” They purposely set a winter opening date as Tanya said they knew if they could survive the winter, the rest would follow. Having been open now for three months, she says the shop is going really well. “We are about to expand into even more of the old dairy factory and will be adding a deck where we can display a lot more produce.”

One of the four Farm Shop partners, Tanya Clancy at work in the shop, now into its third month and booming

Tanya says they could fill the shop with craft, but are concentrating on the food side, which already makes up more than 50 per cent of the stock. “We only have locally produced produce and what people love is not only the old fashioned marketing but also fresh

food grown in someone’s home garden just tastes so much better — and people remember how it used to be.’ Much of the Farm Shop’s success comes down to its forty-odd local producers, whom Tanya calls ‘partners.’ It’s also driven a regular outlet for supplier’s goods without them

having to go from market to market not knowing how much they will sell.

Series of books set to delight young readers

“We do the marketing, we have the premises five days a week and that means they have more time to go and do what they do best — produce the goods.”

by Denise Gunn

The first two books from a new series of rural-based children’s stories are set to be released.

Tanya says many producers start off well, but just don’t have enough time. “They’ll have the quality goods, the Facebook page and the enthusiasm, but then with weekend only markets, often over a wide area, they struggle to keep it all up to date — and that’s where we can help.”

The Farm Shop is in the old dairy factory and is set to expand

The shop has a comprehensive website which the partners constantly update, and promote. ‘We advertise goods 24/7 from one central point. Producers don’t have to head off into the unknown. They bring it here, we promote it and they sell it.” Rather than impacting negatively on local weekend markets, Tanya says it has been quite the reverse. Tanya says they also enjoy passing knowledge onto the next generation. “We want kids to know that vegetables can still come from a garden behind their house, that bread can still be baked using wholesome ingredients supplied locally, that produce does not come wrapped in plastic trays and that locally run co-operatives like this can be

really satisfying and successful.” As for the future? Tanya says the idea is to now take the brand out to the rest of New Zealand. “We envisage similar local cooperatives, in all sorts of communities under the Farm Shop banner. Local produce and goods coordinated to a retail point and the website tying it all together as the same joint venture.” So the Farm Shop at Gordonton is your good old-fashioned farmers’ market of 50 years ago, but not in some grubby council car park or on a sodden town reserve under flapping blue plastic. It’s in a smartly renovated, character building right where the startlingly fresh produce, cut flowers, good gourmet food and craft all comes from. And it’s on line too. Very 21st century!

Written by Waikato part time drystock farmer and milk tanker driver Peter Hills, the books are based around experiences with his children as they grew up on the farm and those of others he has watched. Peter could be described as a jackof-all-trades. The former police officer was stationed in Putaruru and Tokoroa for 26 years. He has also worked on cattle stations and driven wheat harvesters in Australia, ridden in rodeos and performed as a rodeo clown. He began writing the books around 12 months ago. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and finally plucked up the courage to do it,” said Peter. “It wasn’t until I actually showed some of the stories to another writer of children’s books that I got the encouragement to carry it on.” Two of the books due to be released onto the market are titled ‘Me and Dad spray the thistles’ and ‘Me and Dad build the Chook house’. “These are the sorts of stories that kids will relate to and hopefully some

will see that milk doesn’t just come from a supermarket shelf in a plastic bottle,” said Peter. Local schools have already expressed an interest in the books for their libraries. The books are geared towards children up to seven years of age. Peter has also begun working on a second series of books titled ‘Me and Mum’. “Kids need heroes and what better hero than their Mum or Dad.” The books will be available to purchase from www. meanddadkidsbooks.co.nz.

The original farm, located further up the valley, was drawn in the Mapara and Tangitu Survey Districts Ballot in May 1913. When Alan’s grandfather returned from WWI in 1918, he farmed this property. Alan and Tracey run 650 R1 dairy grazers, 80 R2 steers, 1,000 ewes and 600 works lambs on the farm. This winter they also leased a 100ha block. The couple try to keep the farming operation as simple as possible. Cattle are grazed on a long term basis for

four dairy farmers as well as export cattle and short term winter heifer and cow grazing. “Grazing numbers move around a bit as we graze cattle for a live export company and cattle are coming in and out on a regular basis,” said Alan. “We have another couple of hundred still to come in for a shipment for the new year.

The Curry’s farm in the Aratoro Valley

“This winter we grazed 100 cows and are aiming to graze 300 next year.” Standard maintenance on the farm is ongoing with fertilising, fencing and thistle spraying. Alan said this has made a huge difference to the farm’s carrying capacity over spring and summer. A fencer and stockman are employed on a casual basis when required. The farm, which is situated on a combination of flat, medium and steep hill country, receives between 1,600– 1,800ml of rainfall each year. Supplementary feed grown on the farm this winter included 11ha of kale for the cows and yearling heifers, nine hectares of rape to fatten lambs, 300 bales of silage and also some hay for the horses. “We can get a lot of frosts so we lamb later to suit grass growth,” said Alan. Seven years ago, Alan and Tracey established Aratoro Appaloosa and Sporthorse Stud with the goal of breeding quality horses. Although Tracey had a long involvement with horses, Alan was

relatively new to the equine breeding scene. Together the pair created a winning combination with the horses bred at their boutique stud. The stud’s resident Clydesdale stallion, Murrayfield Lord Daniel (Danny), was selected specifically with sporthorse breeding in mind. Standing close to 17hh, this stallion’s laidback, gentle nature is passed onto his progeny. Danny also carries a rare black gene which has proven to be popular in sporthorse competition. The couple bought Danny as a yearling. He serves the stud’s mares each year and also stands to outside mares. Three quality foals are usually bred annually on Aratoro Stud and sold on as youngsters all over the central North Island. With the focus on breeding good natured horses, Tracey and Alan have gone to great lengths to find suitable broodmares and stallions to breed from. All foals are bred with movement and correct conformation in mind, and the youngsters develop athletic abilities suitable for all types of ridden disciplines.

“We thoroughly enjoy breeding horses, right from selecting the mare, watching the progeny being born, the handling process and watching the horse progress with their new owners,” said Tracey. “Our goal is to continue to do what we love and the day it becomes a chore we will reassess.” Redecorating the farmhand cottage on the property to provide farmstay accommodation has presented an extension to the farm and horse stud business. Guests are able to join Alan in his daily farming routine, see the farm animals and horses, and visit some of the local sights and attractions. Tracey said a high percentage of their guests are families with young children wanting a farm experience. “They get the opportunity to get up close and personal with farm animals, and to just enjoy some good oldfashioned fun such as catching fresh water crayfish and eeling.” The farm’s location near the Mapara Bird Reserve, the new Pureroa Timber Trail, Waitomo Caves and short drive to Mount Ruapehu, has been an added

drawcard providing guests with central accommodation to these attractions. With a shared passion for farming, history and breeding horses, Alan and Tracey’s farm gives them opportunity to pursue all of these. “We have a huge respect and admiration for the determination and true grit of our pioneering settlers, the conditions they endured and the sheer enormity of their task,” said Tracey. “We know we owe them a great deal for the pathway they constructed for new generation farmers.” Four months ago, Alan and Tracey took their interest in history a step further through opening an antique store, Vintage Rose, in Te Kuiti, stocking antiques, French imports, industrial pieces, art and vintage clothing. “Life is very busy,” said Tracey.

est Melton’s Noel Kennard broke the mould of horse racing syndication in 2012 when he launched his In It For Fun syndicate with 420 punters taking a piece in the syndicate and its horse Franco Harrison. The new Double the Fun syndicate will feature two horses and there are 1,000 syndicate shares on offer and each individual syndicate share can have up to five members. “Up until the In It For Fun syndicate horse racing syndicates were usually four or five people getting together to buy a horse and share in the training

costs and possibly any stake money the horse would win,” Kennard says. “The reality is very few people make money out of that type of syndicate and with Harness Racing New Zealand looking to encourage people to get involved in the industry, whether as owners or punters, syndication needed to change.” Kennard’s concept is simple, you buy a share in a syndicate for a oneoff cost for a two-year duration. There are no ongoing costs involved and at the end of the two-year period the horse is sold and syndicate members share in the proceeds as well as any stake money the horse has earned. “This is not a get rich quick scheme this is about

having fun and being involved in the thrill of racing,” he says. Kennard is an Authorised Syndicator and has been vetted by both Harness Racing New Zealand and the Commerce Commission under whose rules and regulations he has to operate. In the 1980s he got involved in the breeding industry and after spending some time in the North Island returned to the South Island and set up a stallion station on a 20-acre property at Weedons. During this time he forged a relationship with one of Canterbury’s major studs, Wai-Eyre Farm near Ohoka, and began to focus on using New Zealand bred stallions to stand rather

than importing stallions from the United States, and has been closely associated with the success of New Zealand bred siring sensation Christian Cullen. Over the years Kennard became less involved in the actual stud work and began to increase his involvement in the marketing and promotional side of the breeding industry. That was when he hit on the idea of creating a syndicate with a large number of participants paying a one-off fee over a two-year period. This led to the birth of the In It For The Fun syndicate. Initially 500 hundred shares were put up and two weeks later when the offer closed 420 people had signed up for the syndicate and its horse Franco Harrison. Franco Harrison has won two races and placed in several others in the year the syndicate has been running. “Syndicate members have emailed me and said they have already got their

money’s worth. At race meetings they all wear In It For Fun/Franco Harrison tags and through that are meeting new friends who are also part of the syndicate. “I recently had an email from a Christchurch woman who says she was on a stopover in Dubai and got talking to another New Zealander and found that this person was also a member of the Franco Harrison syndicate. What are the chances? “That is what this type of syndication is all about, having fun and meeting people.” The new Double the Fun syndicate has already secured one horse, now with southland trainer Hamish Hunter, and the second horse, once it has been purchased, will be going to Weedons trainer Nigel McGrath. But when it comes to side-by-side UTVs, you'll find that they've been ahead of the curve as well. Their early iterations of the Rhino two-seater were both literally and figuratively ground breaking, and this year's complete re-working of the popular off-road machine adds more versatility and a dash of fun to what has become the consummate rural workhorse. The heart of the Rhino is its fuel injected, four valve 686cc engine, producing enough power and torque to haul the machine's relatively lightweight frame through anything nature throws at it. As with all UTVs, chassis and suspension setup is key, and the Yamaha R and D team have put together a winning combo, with over 300mm of ground clearance, independent long travel suspension and a centralised weight distribution layout which all translates to sharp handling. The Rhino 700 goes on to tick the big boxes for safety and ergonomics as well, and rigorous testing has been undertaken to make sure that a day spent driving this machine is more akin to a cruise in the car than you would expect — right down to a very intuitive, easy to master control layout.

A similar philosophy has informed the latest model of Yamaha's famous Grizzly 4x4 quad. With all the ingredients already there in a package which has proven popular with farmers over the years, Yamaha have set out to tune and fettle their machine, perfecting its ride with all round double-wishbone suspension. Beefing up its all-wheel disc brakes, and doing away with the chain and belt drives seen on other off road vehicles in favour of a Yamaha trademark — shaft drive, as pioneered on their legendary big-torque road bikes like the V-Max. Power steering and a three-stage traction selection system make for a less physically demanding ride. The other big change is one of choice, with a new, more compact power plant now available. Smaller than the 700cc mill Grizzly riders may be familiar with, the new 558cc four stroke is geared up for serious torque for more traction. It hits the 'sweet spot' of power, weight and economy of use which farmers demand, and it does so with what feels like plenty of grunt left to spare, even when tackling muddy trails.

Multi-tasking makes a great impression Versatility is key to the success of modern farms — especially when it comes to power equipment. Investing in a machine which can do not just one highly specialised job, but tackle two is a smart move, and farmers have come to demand less of a ‘narrow focus’ from their farm machinery accordingly. One way to boost efficiency is to multi task — a job handled with aplomb by Lely’s new Tigo XR loader wagon and silage wagon. Developed in-house by the agrimachinery innovators themselves, this new series of machines was based on the principles of rugged reliability, nimble terrain handling, and of course, some serious capacity! The new wagons’ innovative superstructure has an integrated, hydraulically-adjustable, multifunction bulkhead. Making optimum use of the space above the extra wide pick-up provides an additional six cubic metres, and the whole package is designed to ensure absolute stability even when transporting huge amounts of crop. Lely has designed its new Tigo series with a generous inner frame width so

they can accommodate a greater load volume in a shorter vehicle. This makes the new Tigo XR the most compact combi wagon on the market. But with seven extra-wide tine bars, this small and mighty machine still boasts outstanding crop pick-up. The optional pick up tracer roller delivers an even cleaner job and keeps the pick-up out of harm’s way when working in New Zealand’s demanding field conditions. The rotational speeds of the rotor and pick-up are perfectly co-ordinated to ensure excellent crop flow and an enormous pick-up capacity. In short, this multi-tasking machine promises to work harder and smarter, making it a great investment on the farm.

PASTURE preparation Soil Matters with Peter Burton

Why all growing systems are essentially ‘biological’ Over recent times there has been much debate around the topic of ‘biological farming’. As little if any nutrient enters a plant without first going through a biological process, all growing systems regardless of the label applied to them are essentially biological systems. The most important issue presently, and is the one at the heart of the debate around different growing systems, is the use of fertiliser nitrogen. Excess fertiliser nitrogen reduces the humus content of soil and when used regularly to promote growth, total pasture production steadily declines. Recent work from AgResearch shows an 18% decline in pasture growth in the

Bowe Spreading Ltd

second season after establishment of new pasture. What we often observe is that where there is a dependence on nitrogen fertiliser, by the end of the fifth year the gaps between grass plants have steadily increased, a significant number of plants have been lost due to pulling in autumn, excess rain ponds for longer periods and total growth reaches a level where regrassing becomes the only option. What is now well understood is that at least half of applied fertiliser nitrogen does not enter the targeted

plant. Some is lost direct to the atmosphere with the remainder finding its way into groundwater, and Ministry of the Environment figures show a steady increase in Nitrate-N levels in areas where intensive dairy farming is carried out. Fertiliser nitrogen can be a useful tool; it’s the dependence on it that needs to be sorted. We only have to look to growing systems in Europe to know that its future use will be increasingly regulated. Farmers have the choice to modify their systems now, or wait until regulation arrives and other people start making decisions for them. To know whether a property has a dependence on fertiliser nitrogen simply stop applying it, all of it. If the result is less growth then there’s a dependency issue, it’s a simple test for any addiction, and the addiction to fertiliser nitrogen is evidenced by urea silos on farms. But it doesn’t have to be. The use of DoloZest and CalciZest, soil improvers sold under the Functional Fertiliser brand are being increasingly used to successfully replace fertiliser nitrogen. The measures collected over a number of years from the Berryman property, an intensive dairy operation near Edgecumbe, using a DoloZest/ CalciZest based total nutrient programme, show total pasture growth

based on Overseer to have been in excess of 19 tonne for each of the 2010–11 and 2011–12 seasons. Pasture cages showed growth for the same seasons to be 18.4 and 18.3 tonne respectively, with less than 20kgN/ha applied each year. Total milk solid production was in excess of 1,300kg/ha from an average of 200 cows, with around 20% of the total feed being bought in. Long strong stemmed clovers flourish throughout the major growing season providing exceptional growth of calves and contribute significantly to the 0.87:1 protein to fat ratio of the milk produced. Clover flea and weevil under close examination can still be found however given the health of the clover damage is minimal. Careful digging and sifting also turns up the occasional grass grub and beetle larvae but again too few to cause damage. Total nitrogen tests showed 9,400kgN/ha in the top 30cm of the soil with 200kg N/ha available for plant use at the time of testing. With increased carbon sequestered each year and more humus formed, a steady increase in pasture growth and total farm production can be expected, and with measuring continuing more data will be made available. PASTURE preparation Nutrition — the life enhancer by John K Morris

We eat food for its nutrient value to keep ourselves alive and energised, but what happens when the food we eat has no nutritional value? We get no value from that food, worse than that, the cells in our bodies that look after us do not recognise food that has no value, they don’t know what to do with it, so they just store it in the body. Today, especially in the USA due to the lack of minerals in food, people weighing 200 kilos and more are dying from malnutrition while

surrounded by food that has no nutritional value, but is engineered to be addictive. According to Dr Melchoir Dikkers, professor of Biochemistry at Loyola University (Los Angeles) malnutrition is the most important problem confronting mankind at the present time. The United States, despite its boasted food production, is grossly undernourished and although per capita the expenditure on healthcare in the USA is the highest in the world, so is the incidence of cancer, obesity, heart and circulatory diseases. Amazingly, Dr Joseph Weissman, associate professor of the UCLA College of Medicine, a specialist in preventative medicine and immunology, has discovered that nearly all the non-infectious

diseases that presently plagues mankind, are of origin, developed during the 20th century. Billions of dollars spent on research, newer diagnostic techniques, organ transplants, coronary by-pass procedures, chemotherapy, radiation and all various drugs, have not altered the advance of these killer diseases, but instead have merely enriched the chemists and medical practioners. These diseases reflect malnutrition. Malnutrition begins in the soil. Today’s soils are tired, depleted, sick, poisoned by synthetic chemicals and void of minerals. Minerals in the soil control the metabolism of cells in plants, animal and man. Diseases are created chiefly by destroying the harmony reigning among mineral substances present in infinitesimal amounts in air, water, food, but most importantly in soil. Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers are designed to bring minerals, microbes and health and vitality back to the soil. All life is dependent upon the soil! So by getting the soil right that health and vitality in the soil will permeate through to all life above the soil — to plants, animals and people. It is not only a simple system it is effective. The lack of minerals in our soils today is the result of toxic nutrient deficient chemical fertilisers, so, if you want to turn your farm around you need to work on your soil and that’s where Agrissentials begins by turning your soil into a live, living, breathing, pulsating, energy rich soil full of minerals, micro-organisms and health. Go on, call Agrissentials’ agents today, you won’t regret it! Cambridge clinic a winner

The opportunity for the 29 Caci clinics in New Zealand to come together for an award night to recognise the top achievers in the industry came at the National Caci Franchise conference in Auckland. There were four awards given out and Cambridge was one of the achieving clinics, recognised for its huge business growth and top performing team within the last year. “This award means a lot to me and my team when competing against much

Getting enough Co Enzyme Q10? Co enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is essential for energy and a deficiency will can make us abnormally tired with weak muscles. As an antioxidant it also prevents dangerous oxidation of cholesterol trapped in artery walls which is the first cause of the plaques that restrict coronary blood flow. We produce CoQ10 less efficiently as we age. The creeping tiredness that affects us later in life can be from insufficient CoQ10. Statin medications also reduce CoQ10 and is often responsible for many of the side effects including muscle weakness, pain and general malaise. Some problems especially autoimmune and neurological disease seem to lower CoQ10 levels possibly through increased demand from the disease processes. Most healthy people under 50 do not need CoQ10 supplements as we efficiently make all the CoQ10 we need. However, increasing age and some diseases make a strong case for controlled supplementation.

I include it as nutritional support for most circulatory problems and many neurological and autoimmune diseases including Parkinson’s, MS, CFS, FM and PMR that all cause low energy. I regard it as essential when taking cholesterol medications to protect against muscle problems, fatigue and memory loss. For example I recently created a programme for someone with MS and she has noted a distinct improvement in her energy and general well being. I add CoQ10 either as a separate patented US sourced product or as part of my own energy formula with CoQ10, B vitamins, resveratrol, lipoic acid and many other energy co factors. What about building consents?

Building consents confirm that plans and specifications for proposed building work meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code, and ensure that any building work is safe, durable and does not endanger the health of property owners and users. It can only be issued in advance of any work taking place. You may also need a resource consent if your project has an impact on the environment. You can access details information from the websites of your local council. New rules came into effect in 2012 which apply to projects containing restricted building work critical to the integrity of a building by ensuring that it is structurally sound and weather-tight. Most building projects require a building consent before any work is started. The consent includes not only the building work but also any work related to site preparation, plumbing or drainage. If you do not obtain a building consent before starting work, it will cause problems later in the project and may also lead to anybody involved as property owners or tradespersons facing prosecution. You do not need to apply for a building consent if your project is covered by an exemption. However all building work undertaken must comply with the New Zealand Building Code. Examples of exempt building works include decks less than 1.5 metres above ground level, a garden shed less than 10sq metres and at least its height from the boundary, fencing less than 2.5 metres high, carports not exceeding 20sq metres and even playground equipment, used by a single household, that is less than three metres above the ground.

TESTIMONIAL

“Building a house with you guys is so much fun and really is ‘smooth sailing’ — from the initial meeting with the non-stalking Rochelle, meeting up with John and then into the planning stage with Melissa and the back-up assistance of Treena. We now have won what our neighbours call the ‘Builders of the street award’. On site they are amazing, friendly and happy to explain anything we ask, and so far all the sub-contractors have been great. We are really impressed.” N and K McDonald “Thank you all very much for a job well done and making the process for us very enjoyable. We have a lovely home that will give us many years of enjoyment.”

Leading the way on water

Over the years the rural water industry has seen its fair share of over selling on promise and under delivering on results. The impact of iron and manganese in rural water supplies has far reaching implication. Good quality water is crucial

to the success of the farming industry and it is often overlooked. A real lack of knowledge toward the technical aspect

Ecoworld’s trailed filter in operation on a bore with high iron and manganese

of ground water iron and manganese has resulted in some treatment systems failing to provide. The implications of these failed attempts to provide promised results has not only resulted in unwanted costs and disruptions to those involved, it has also created a generalised misunderstanding in the marketplace of the complexities of removing iron and manganese from rural water supplies. A case of ‘once bitten twice shy’ has made it more difficult to regain the trust and confidence of those who have been sold on a promise. With the growing need for water treatment systems to provide better results the price of high-tech filtration is not getting any cheaper. Selling water filtration on a promise does not really cut it anymore. This lead Ecoworld a leading water treatment company based in Hamilton, to rethink how they approach the market

and make good on the promises that they make. Ecoworld has always been about being straight up and honest with customer service at the forefront. This rethinking has seen the development of a new sales and demonstration tool, a portable full scale pilot filtration system. This trailered system can demonstrate directly to the potential customer how the system works whilst allowing them to experience the benefits of good clean water from their own water source. The filter has been designed for the removal of iron and manganese and is capable of treating flow-rates up to 4.5m³ (per hour). The trailered filter system can be taken onsite and can quickly and easily be connected to any bore water supply and storage tank for a pre-determined time. To make a booking contact Ecoworld on 0800 109 202.

A golden standard of living

It’s what’s on the inside that counts and with Golden Homes, you know you are getting the best. You don’t need to sacrifice style for value, or durability for style. We’ve spent years developing the Gold Standard Building System®, with our Goldseal Warranty®, so that you can have it all. There’s New Zealand-made ZOG® steel framing, with it’s 50 year durability statement, that’s so strong, your house can withstand seismic activity up to magnitude 9. And with weathertight exterior cladding and thermally-broken windows, you’ll get a warm, dry home that looks fantastic. At a glance there is quite a list of advantages of steel framing, apart from its ability to withstand an earthquake. Steel framing gives you the design freedom to easily create optimum architectural forms that timber simply does not allow you to do. Steel is also a

third of the weight of timber, whilst also being fire resistant. Homes will always take some knocks from everyday family life. That’s why the interior walls are all lined with high impact-resistant GIB® Ultraline, which is also fire resistant and coated with Resene paint. Our showhome is open at 3 Karewa Place, Hamilton, from 9am–5pm Monday to Friday, 12.30pm–3.30pm on the weekends. HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

Are you ready for the new season? When it comes to being organised with staff and machinery you probably are, but what about lameness?

O’Neill eNgiNeeriNg lTd l

REAL STEEL FARM BUILDINGS

Or, are you like many who believe they won’t get lame cows this year? It is a bit like a new year’s resolution. I guess it is understandable that people have every intention of doing their best in keeping this stock affliction down, but how are they going to achieve it? It is not going to happen automatically.

You require a strategy, but in order to have a strategy you need a good understanding of the contributing factors of the condition. I have written many articles about these factors and I will continue to do so, but what are you going to do when you do end up with lame cows — and you will get them. How many do you need before you consider it a problem? Would you consider five cows in your lameness herd throughout the season a problem? I know that many farmers would be more than happy if they only had five throughout the season. Let’s break it down. If you have a milking season of 40 weeks and if cows are lame on an average of four weeks then you will have about 50 lame cows that season because you replace the five affected cows every four weeks, so, over 40 weeks you replace them 10 times.

Circular Storage Buildings

How much does a lame cow cost you? That also depends on who you talk to. Some people say $50 and some people say a $1,000. A few years ago

gable Buildings

we sent out a questionnaire to 300 dairy farmers. With the answers that farmers were coming back with, we worked out that the average cost per lame cow in Canterbury was around $1,200. That may seem very high but if you have a cow that is not in calf because of lameness then you have to replace that empty cow with a cow that is in calf. That in itself would cost you over $1,000 without the treatment cost or loss of production cost added on. Then there are also plenty of cows that need to be culled because of lameness even though they are in calf. So I think you should work with a cost on average of $500 per lame cow. That is possibly still on the conservative side, but in our example of 50 lame cows during the season you have a cost of $25,000. I don’t know about you but there are many good things that I could do with $25,000! In my travels I come across many farmers who haven’t thought about the cost too much. I am just trying to put things into perspective. There are plenty of new milking sheds being built that have no facilities to trim cows. Some people seem to find it hard to justify buying a crush or doing a hoof trimming course because they don’t have many lame cows. You don’t need many lame cows to have a problem that costs you lots of money, let alone considering the animal welfare costs.

Farmers; use North SumpTM to improve your effluent retention The North SumpTM was developed for dairy farm use; enabling quick, simple diversion of clean water and dairy effluent in order to reduce loading on effluent storage. The premise is that the North SumpTM directs flows during high risk periods to effluent storage i.e. milking and wash-down and otherwise to storm water in low risk periods i.e. shed idle times. Features • Simple operation with positional lock (position flag optional) • Minimal potential for fouling by stick, stones and cow hair • Lightweight and easy to install • Relative low cost

Installed, or about to install a lined pond?

Lined ponds are becoming the industry standard. They work very well and the larger the better. But they have a downside. Whether lined or not, there will be a sludge build up over time and at some point this will need to be removed. Avoiding damage to your expensive liner is obviously crucial. However, this is difficult to do when clawing out sludge. Also with large modern ponds, diggers can’t reach the sludge in the middle. Plus there is the cost of having the job done in the first place. There is a way to avoid this potential risk all together. It’s called Impact. Currently used by farmers around the world, Impact is a product that not only keeps the sludge at bay but also has very beneficial long term effects. Impact is a safe biological product containing many kinds of bacteria, fungus and bacterial nutrients. These organisms digest waste at a much faster rate than those in an untreated pond. In fact up to a 95% reduction of solids has been reported. This enhanced digestion process has the added benefit of unlocking nutrients and making them more plant available. This means a quicker uptake, increased grass production and reduced nutrient waste.

The grass also has a higher nutritional content that cows just love. One dairy farmer described using Impact as ‘The best thing I did in my Life’ (Mark Bon) and yet another said, ‘I wish I had started using it 10 years ago’

(Gerald Carey). Impact is inexpensive and practical to use. After the initial dose it’s simply thrown into the wash down water once a month. It is completely safe for humans, plants and animals.

Impact is available from BioMagic Ltd, tel 09 424 4476 or go to www. biomagic.co.nz for more information.

Speeding the breeding process

A new breeding indicator, the Tru-Test MilkHub Heat Detection system — reduces labour, missed heats and captures key data. Current methods of heat detection rely heavily on staff knowledge to spot the signs of heat — a very manual and labour intensive process filled with risk. Even

with high levels of observation, skill and knowledge, many heats are missed or AB straws wasted on cows wrongly identified as ready.

Tru-Test Group Product Manager Shane Dooley says whilst there are support devices such as heat mount detectors available, automation enables farmers to gain huge benefits in labour efficiencies and greater heat detection accuracy. “This was the main driver for Tru-Test in developing the MilkHub Heat Detection system,” he says. “Using proven infra red overhead scanning technology (MilkHub Heat Scanner) and New Zealand designed and manufactured self adhesive reflective patches (MilkHub Heat Detectors), the system improves on the benefits of using heat mount detectors by minimising the requirement for visual assessment during milking. “Pressure from a mounting animal reveals a highly reflective layer. Whilst still visually detectable, when a cow walks under the MilkHub Heat Scanner the infra red beam detects the extent the patch has been rubbed and indicates whether the cow needs to be checked or AB’d by a flashing light and audible beep,” Dooley explains.

from this …

using one of these:

to this …

“Staff don’t need to do a thing — cows that are on heat will be automatically detected and drafted and waiting in a pen after leaving the shed. In addition the drafting data will be automatically captured in the MiHub Online Management tool providing a record of cow EID, heat detection timings and date, allowing closer management of breeding programmes.” Whilst it is important to remember that all heat detection technologies still need to be used in conjunction with visual observation of recognised standing heat signs in cows and best practice, the MilkHub Heat Detection system, through automation, offers a steep change in reducing labour costs, risk of missing heat, and empty rates and increasing the likelihood of achieving tight calving patterns. The system is suitable for herringbone and rotary operations.

A 150th In Maungaturoto

27

by Paul Campbell

Maungaturoto in the Kaipara has taken on a whole new look for the town and district 150th anniversary celebrations from Friday, November 1 to Sunday, November 3. “We are issuing a hearty invitation to all of those people in New Zealand with connections to the town and its surrounding farming community to make a date to join us in our anniversary events,” says organising committee president, Albie Paton.

Registrations for the 150th will begin at 3pm on the Friday followed by a ‘meet and greet’ at the Maungaturoto Centennial Hall and the opening of a time capsule from the town’s 1963 centenary. On the Saturday, at 10.30am, there will be a settlers landing re-

enactment and a powhiri at the landing site in Bickerstaffe Road followed by a parade ‘through the ages’ to the Maungaturoto Country Club. Old time sports and entertainment will occupy the afternoon, followed by a celebration dinner at the centennial hall.

Albie Paton

On Sunday there will be an interdenominational church service and the dedication of a ‘memorial ashes wall’. Throughout the weekend, there will be performances of a play written for the event, produced by the Otamatea Repertory Theatre, and history trails, with visitors guided around the district.
