“Waikato’s rural-based economy and its many fantastic natural places will continue to need support through control of pests like possums and rats, and I’m committed to remaining part of this.” This from biosecurity expert John Simmons who recently received a national pest animal management award, as he prepared to take up a position interim general manager’s position at the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust. He will be overseeing the pest-proof bird sanctuary project around Maungatautari near Cambridge, as well as planning consultancy work. The PC Nelson Memorial Award he has won is from the Biosecurity Institute, a professional body for those working in the biosecurity sector and given annually to those who have excelled in animal pest management. Education is key
FOR DEDICATED TEAM
Former vet nurse Michelle Horan was awaiting a flight home from the Philippines when she started talking to a fellow traveller about the plight of Egypt’s horses.
F
our months later, that initial talk gave rise to the Kiwi Care Team — a New Zealand-based group of volunteer vets, nurses, equine dentists, farriers and passionate individuals, who are providing education and assistance to better the lives of working animals around the world. “Basically, it all started when I went to the Philippines with a film crew investigating the dog meat market and during the trip I got talking to a friend about the state of horses in Egypt,” says Michelle.
“On the way home, I decided that something needed to be done — not so far as giving free stuff to people, which is what a lot of animal charities seemed to be doing, but in terms of educating people. Literally four months later, we had a team on the plane to Cairo.” Social media played an essential role in recruiting KCT. “I put the idea on facebook and it went viral. I had a lot of interest from people who wanted to get on board and also those who said ‘you can’t do it’ but that just made me more determined.”

Educating the locals is the key to long-term change
great hope of improving conditions for working animals. Six months after their maiden voyage to Egypt, the team travelled to Fiji’s Lautoka area. There it became clear that all working horses in developing countries face very similar situations. The team have since returned to Fiji on several occasions and have also spent time in the Matheran Mountain region of India. Veterinarian Patrick Sells has travelled to Fiji and India with KCT. Originally from the United Kingdom and now a horse vet at Windsor Park Stud in Cambridge, Steve has volunteered his skills in developing countries every year, for the past eight years. “The team fills a niche in New Zealand and we’re really gaining momentum. No other equine groups are trying to create change in our neighbouring, developing countries and that’s what attracted me to them. Long term, I plan to stay in New Zealand and I hope to see the Kiwi Care Team advance and to turn into something on the scale of the Donkey Sanctuary or SPANA, which are two similar groups in the UK. These groups have grown to a size where they are self-sustaining and that’s where I’d like to see us headed, so we can leave a legacy in places like Fiji.” Chloe Phillips-Harris is a full time rider and horse trainer from the Bay of Islands who has travelled to Cairo, Fiji and India with the KCT. “I was looking to do something good in the world and my background with horses led me to the Kiwi Care Team, which is something I’m incredibly passionate about.
I feel so lucky to be a part of an amazing team of people and I hope to be able to continue the work we do for a long time to come. I’m proud of the work we do and I think we are making real progress in the lives of animals and also in the villages where we work. We are making a difference.” KCT is a non-profit organisation, so rallying interest in the Kiwi public is of utmost importance. Team members fundraise to buy medical supplies but pay their own flights, accommodation and living costs. Medicine alone for KCT’s last trip to Fiji was three and half thousand dollars. “These trips are not a joyride and our volunteers need to be aware of that. We are full-on, 16 hours a day, from dawn to dusk. The work however, is very rewarding and the people we work with are genuinely appreciative of what we do.” For more information on the Kiwi Care Team and to find out how to become involved and support the organisation, visit their website www.kiwicareteam. co.nz or Facebook page.

Ruatiti… A great place to get away from the rat race
— by Colin Patterson
If you want to get to get away from it all, it’s hard to find a place more remote than Ruatiti Wilderness.
Y
ou turn off State Highway 4 between National Park and Raetihi and travel 38km along a narrow, winding road. Among the warnings given to guests are to travel with your headlights on at all times — be ready to pull over should vehicles approach from the opposite direction — and to watch for stock at all times.

When you reach Ruatiti Wilderness you can go no further because you are at the end of the road. There is no cellphone coverage and no connection to the national electricity grid. It’s almost a world apart from the hustle and bustle of the 21st century. That’s what appealed to Taupo couple Norm and Sherri May who bought the 865 hectare (2137 acre) property two years ago. At the time they were operating a concreting company. “We always wanted to be on the land,” says Sherri. “My husband was a keen hunter and we wanted a lifestyle change. It just fell out of the sky.” Sherri and Norm brought their children in to take a look. “We lit a fire outside the hut. And we were able to talk to our kids because there’s no cellphone coverage. We decided this where we want to be.”
Ruatiti existed largely in its natural state until just after the end of the First World War. Then the government of the day decided it and much of the surrounding area would be subdivided into farms for returning soldiers. But Ruatiti’s rugged topography, poor soils and harsh winter climate served to defeat all attempts at agriculture. Most of the areas cleared from the bush reverted to their natural state. Previous owner Gary Rawnsley started the hunting business during his 23 years in charge and the Mays have continued it, using Facebook and a website to market the area’s attributes. And there are many attributes, most notably its wildlife and its relatively unspoiled ambience. “It’s just stunning,” says Sherri. Ruatiti Wilderness is a magnet for hunters who enjoy the challenge of taking out deer and trophy stags. Hunters can choose guided hunts —
three mountains in the central north Island and in other direction all the way to Mt Taranaki.
”
usually with Norm — or self guided hunts, where they hunt alone. “The roar during April and May is the big time,” says Sherri. “The animals are roaring all around. It’s a bit exciting. The animals are all wild New Zealand bush deer.” Ruatiti Wilderness offers a four-bunk hunting hut at which most hunters stay. But for larger groups there is Ruatiti Lodge, a three-bedroom cottage which is available for groups of more than four people. The season for self-guided hunting closes from the end of October until

early March, as that is when the big stags drop their antlers and the hinds are fawning. But that summer period is an ideal time for casual visitors, such as mountain bikers and those wanting to enjoy the sights. “From the top of the property you can see the three mountains in the central north Island and in other direction all the way to Mt Taranaki.” Sherri says Ruatiti’s customers come from all over. “We’ve got a wide range of clients. There are a lot of people from Thames and Coromandel and from Auckland. We’re getting more from

If you leave the door open it might just come inside. We’ve also got ducks, chickens and dogs. And at night you can hear a kiwi up close.” Even though Ruatiti is remote, Sherri makes good use of the satellite phone to ensure the world is kept up to date with the latest happenings. “Facebook is amazing. High gains from farm consultants
by Kent Caddick
Although professional help with farm management is very important to many farmers, most do not employ a consultant, even though an analysis of profit data shows farmers who do receive $4 return for every dollar spent. This is just one conclusion from research being conducted by Lincoln University’s senior lecturer in Farm Management Research, Dr Kevin Old,
To find the smartest solutions sometimes you need to dig deeper
Taking the guess work out of effluent pond and tank construction From site selection and geotechnical investigation and testing through to pond design, earthworks inspections and certification, we can help manage your effluent storage pond and tank construction. and research fellow, Dr Peter Nuthall. Last year more than 2000 farmers were mailed a questionnaire which sought opinions and preferences with regard to farm succession and governance. A response rate of 36% was achieved. Dr Old said with this response rate being greater than the norm, that it was clear that farmers were interested in the topics covered. “With the decisions made by farmers having a significant impact on New Zealand’s economic wellbeing, it is important to know how farming decisions are made, particularly when it comes to ascertaining how farm management skills could be improved.” He said most farmers have the potential to access farm consultants, but the results found that only a small number actually utilised such services on a regular basis. “The average use across all farmers was 21 hours per annum, however, over half the farmers surveyed use less than 10 hours per annum, which indicates infrequent or irregular use. At the upper end of farm consultant use, just 4% used more than 70 hours per annum — equating to nearly six hours per month. The research showed
that young farmers (those under 35 years) tend to use consultants more (an average of 42 hours per annum) compared to relatively older farmers. “For instance, for those over 55 years of age, the figure is 21 hours per annum. However, these are averages, and many farmers will not employ consultants at all.” It was found that farmers with a net farm investment of less than $5 million paid $1,330 per annum on average. In contrast, farmers with a net investment of more than $25 million spent $17,700 per annum on average. “When all farm sizes were averaged out, it was found that dairy and crop farmers spent the most Lincoln University’s senior lecturer in on consultants, $4,240 Farm Management Research, Dr Kevin Old is surprised at the low use of farm consultants given and $5,800 per annum the potential they have to increase farmer’s returns. respectively. This is perhaps The researchers considered whether unsurprising as crop farms have a lack of trust was one reason for the important decisions to make each year relatively low use of consultants. regarding selecting crop mix.”

LIGHTING & DESIGN We offer a full lighting design and consultation service to give our clients 100% solution to their home lighting needs, with 18 years of lighting experience. We offer a lighting solution for every budget.
Start with fundamentals We all know that to begin a job with a blank slate means ‘doing it from scratch’ or ‘building from the ground up’. But it’s a lesser known fact that both these sayings predate modern building techniques by thousands of years. The first refers to scraping away the topsoil to expose a solid, rocky foundation, while the second comes from the times when new buildings were often constructed on the foundations of earlier structures. To build ‘from the ground up’, then, is to be utterly sure of the quality of the job, leaving nothing to chance. These days it doesn’t take armies of peasant workers or teams of oxen to get the job done. Preparing a solid foundation is more often left to skilled excavator drivers, while heavy trucks bring in concrete to be pumped into place. Still, we can look back even further in terms of the fundamentals of a
build, to another meaning entirely of ‘starting from scratch’ — the ancient Greek and Roman practice of architects scratching initial designs onto a wax tablet with a stylus. These days it’s more likely to be a magnetic stylus and an iPad. From the very start, it’s always been a good idea to consult with professionals. Whether they are designers and engineers working with weights, measures and sketches, or the people you trust to turn the soil, pour the concrete, or add the finishing touches, the landowner’s version of doing things ‘from the ground up’ should always involve digging deeper into the credentials and qualifications of his build partners. For that very reason, we’ve gathered some of the best on these pages!

Huge exhibitor interest for Auckland Home Show 2014 The Auckland Home Show returns with confidence, Wednesday September 10 to Sunday September 14, at the ASB Showgrounds, driven by massive consumer interest in housing, landscaping and renovation. The show is entirely sold out to exhibitors and has been attracting huge interest from home buyers and renovators alike. Of the key exhibitors this year, the SMEG cooking theatre is a must-see. If the kitchen is the heart of every home, then the vibrant heart of the Auckland Home Show is the 1000m2 SMEG and Baumatic area, including live cooking theatre, new appliances and even classic Italian automobiles. Another source of innovative ideas this year is the ‘Space Module’, an installation designed to help visitors look into the future of appliances and home electronics. This year’s exhibit is all about ‘The Connected Space’, which challenges traditional concepts of a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Land shortages and the high cost of housing has driven many homeowners to consider different ways of living and the ‘The Street of Houses’ offers inspiration. Sponsored by Westpac, ‘The Street’ is a full-scale walk-through feature of the latest innovations in landscaping, materials, construction and cost-effective temporary or portable housing solutions. The Auckland Home Show is also big on giving visitors the information they need to create better and more liveable homes without undue stress

Counties Ready Mix is a dynamic ready mixed concrete supplier based in Drury, South Auckland. This is a family owned and operated business that has experienced strong growth since its conception in 1999 due to its customer service and high level of quality control. As an independent business Counties Ready Mix has developed unique core values. One of these values is reducing its environmental imprint. “Because we work and live locally, we care about the environment we live in. We have gone
to great lengths to recycle all our water, we have developed an environmentally friendly concrete that uses includes fly ash (a pozzolan from coal burning power stations) to reduce the cement content and carbon footprint of concrete. But one of our major environmental reductions has come from taking our surplus concrete and recycling it into our interlocking precast blocks rather than finding its way into landfills.

It’s also been proven that concrete recarbonates over time so it’s nice to know these blocks out on farmers paddocks are slowly soaking up greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide” says Andrew Payne the company’s managing director. Counties have developed a range of three precast interlocking blocks, a small block, a standard and a large block. Each block positively interlocks with the one above adding strength and speeding up installation. “This system is basically a big version of kid’s building blocks. It’s fast, simple and very cost effective — each standard block is nearly 1m2 of wall so it doesn’t take long to put a structure together.” Concrete producers have been manufacturing blocks of various descriptions for some time but Counties has two full time employees ensuring quality control in a purpose-made
building. The blocks have vertical voids that allow them to be reinforced with steel continuously from the top of the wall to the bottom if required. Main uses for the blocks so far have been retaining walls, temporary traffic barriers, dividing walls and feed bins for farmers. “Farmers have really adopted this system because they can easily extend or alter their feed bin as their needs require or as their business grows. Especially now that more intensive farming has demanded quality feeds that are expensive so better storage systems are required. Andrew says they typically have plenty of stock over the winter and sell out around February so it would pay to call them soon if you think this could be the answer to your feed storage next summer! WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES
New life on the farm
The agricultural annual baby boom is underway and the pressure is on as calves and lambs dominate the farming landscape over the next two months. Although a harrowing time for the farmer we all hope and pray the weather is at least favourable. One of the really beautiful things during this period is the new life that abounds on the farms — it is a period of renewed hope for the future of farming and for our country overall. As you move around the farming areas listening to those new little voices and watching them running and playing, it gives a marvellous feeling of hope and prosperity for everyone. From Agrissentials’ point of view we not only see the wonder of this new life above the soil but also, as the temperature rises, we recognise the awakening and multiplication of the soil life; the micro-organisms and the macro-organisms especially the worms
within the soil. Here is another level of life that also needs recognition as it is an integral part of farming. All life above the soil is intrinsically coupled to the microscopic life and worms and their recycling system below the soil. The heavy use of chemical over the past 30 years has seen the destruction of this unique soil recycling system resulting in soil erosion and pollution of farms and our environment. Agrissentials however, specialises in rebuilding the soils recycling system with our multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers which reinstate fertility, health and productivity back into the soil. Top soil is natural capital which has supported life on the planet since the day life began. Today, globally, destruction and erosion of this once bountiful natural capital is becoming a major concern. It is time to turn this situation around and begin using products that not only keep production pumping, but also, through the recycling system build topsoil depth through the activities of the micro-organisms and their ability to build humus (which is carbon) which is topsoil. Once you get this microbial wealth, living breathing and multiplying throughout your soil your farming world will begin to change to a point where you will quietly step off the chemical-treadmill and get back to real farming: producing new life below the soil and healthy new life above the soil — the best of both worlds. One of our Southland farmers who has been on our program for six years or more, got out his mower to cut the hay: only metres into the job he broke both belts on the mower. He went and bought two new belts but then decided to call in a contractor to cut the grass. The comment from the contractor after cutting was that it was the first time ever on that tractor that he had had to drop to a lower gear to get the job done. Here is the proof, that if you can get the soil right, the grass will be more nutritious, with a thicker sword, resulting in strong healthy animals which should fetch a better price. It all comes back to the soil. Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers are just that: bringing life, fertility, health and vitality back to the soil for a better farming world. New Zealand’s isolation, soils and weather make us a strong agricultural and horticultural country, giving us the opportunity to be the best producers on the planet. Look after the soil and the soil will look after the farm and the farm will look after you and yours. There is a better, eco friendly, more economical way to be farming - to find out how, phone 0800 THE KEY that’s 0800 843 539 today for a FREE INFO PACK or you can contact your friendly representative Chris Storm (Coromandel/North Waikato) on 021 738 609 or Robyn Vickers (Central Waikato) 021 0203 6926, Ken Pitts (South/West Waikato) 027 5023 036 to find out how we can make your farm more successful.

You’ll probably know Tru-Test for weighing, milk meters and fencing. We’ve now moved further into the dairy space with MilkHub Dairy Automation and DTS Milk Cooling and Tank Solutions. We are pleased to introduce our regular column ‘In the Shed’ with Tru-Test. Stepping into the shed as a youngster, milking machines, calving and even treatments came a long time before the mysteries of the plant room. If the subdued response to the MPI’s impending changes on milk refrigeration and pre-cooling is anything to go by, many farmers may have had the same sense of trepidation. In fairness there is another 24 months till proposed regulations are enforced. While glycol offers that snapcooling, there are some issues to consider. Energy consumption is likely to be high and if you already have fluctuating power issues at milking time, more draw on the
current is not going to do you any favours. Heat transfer issues can also place pressure on some milk plate coolers. Glycol residue in your bulk milk tank is frowned upon, so it would be prudent to do your homework and get as much free advice as possible. These extra costs are often overlooked when assessing the different options. Other options include ice banks, water chillers and even using an existing colostrum storage vat in only the hottest months. Every farm is different, and there is not one refrigeration company in New Zealand that charges for advice. One thing is for certain, doing nothing is not an option.

Stress and tracks Last month I showed you some evidence that stones are not the likely culprit of making cows lame. Like I said in an earlier article, I Coming back to my original question where I asked to be shown some real believe that the main contributors to evidence of stones being a cause of lameness in New Zealand are nutrition haemorrhage — well, I still haven’t been and stress. So how can a bad track convinced. I am thinking up ways to show cause stress on cows? more evidence to prove Well, there are a my point and I will keep few things that I can I believe that the think of. you informed on that Firstly, if cows don’t one, so stay tuned. main contributors If stones are not the flow well because of to lameness in bad tracks then the cause of the bruising, New Zealand are why does it make likelihood for pushing a difference if we nutrition and stress. cows is greater. I improve our tracks? know you don’t have to have bad tracks to Most farmers tell me that after they have spent money on push cows, and many of you have had their tracks they have less lame cows. experience with people who push cows It is also scientifically shown that bad even on good tracks, but pushing does tracks and bad animal handling increase cause stress. Cows are ‘flight’ animals — their lameness. That seems pretty good evidence that stones are the culprit of instinct tells them to run from trouble. bruises. Or does it? I don’t believe so. Can you imagine what it must be like There is more to tracks than the stones for a cow when they can’t get away fast enough? That is stress. on them.
Secondly, another stress is caused by not getting enough resting time. No, I am not suggesting resting areas along the tracks with an umbrella and a café. I am saying that when the tracks are bad, the cow flow is slower. This means that cows take longer to commute to and from the cow shed and as a consequence will spend less time in the paddock resulting in less time for laying down and resting. It is scientifically proven that there is a strong correlation between resting time and lameness. Just look at a well fed herd in the paddock. What are the cows doing? They graze, lie down, drink water or socialise. Look at cows on the track or in a holding yard. What are they doing? They are walking for long periods of time and

standing still in the yard. Both of those behaviours are unnatural for cows to do for the length of time that we force them to do it. That is stress. So, if we improve the tracks, we improve the cow flow, resulting in more resting time. For example, if you could take 10 minutes off each walk then you have given the cows 40 minutes more each day for lying down, because cows walk four times a day if you are milking them twice a day. Of course, this is not the only reason why we have lame cows, but it is certainly an important factor.

Heavy sort of message, but one that took my mind to how very lucky rural children on farms are. Learning to love animals and pets, space to run around in, excellent food and fresh air. No pressure from people with no prospects who want them to drop to the lowest level, and responsibilities such as good honest work and chores on a daily basis. I expect that 80 percent of families who buy a small block do that to offer their children some sort of farming upbringing. Compare the lifestyles of the two: small classroom numbers versus classes that are stretched to the limit; physical activity every weekend plus sport versus going to a gym and hoping to get into a sports team because of the numbers; eating three regular meals a day versus fast food on tap; tight family atmosphere with parental influence guidance on hand all day every day versus the distraction of youth based
organisations and both parents working away from the home base… and so it goes on. Yes I am generalising and there are some city families who do offer that tight support young people both want and need but it’s a natural thing in the country homes. An obvious example is the ANZ Bank adverts on television at the moment. Young Tom Walsh was brought up by his parents in the farming world and he is now a world leader in shot putting. His Dad Peter Walsh admits that Tom’s parents were always there to encourage and nurture his sporting hopes and that living in the country gave them all the chance to develop those skills and determination needed to get to the top. I am very lucky as, even though I was originally brought up in the city, circumstances meant that at an early age I became a farming boy and although ponies and horses weren’t part
NEW
Triple Mix
“I enjoyed the lifestyle and the experiences of farming” of the equation, which is another story altogether, I enjoyed the lifestyle and the experiences of farming. Things such as sowing bags of wheat on the header, driving tractors in clouds of dust, working my way up from sorting the dags and being on the board in the wool shed, through to becoming the chap who pressed it — all part of the wonders of growing up on a farm. There’s a very good reason farming folk don’t come into town very often, even though farming isn’t the relaxed lifestyle it once was, it is still a way of life that is preferred by many and for very good reason.

Spicy, not pricey
It’s a new age for the motor trade. Chinese car firms are now making inroads with their products, and factories in what were once Soviet vassal states produce many of our luxury European cars. So is it any surprise that the latest pickup truck on the scene comes from India? Mahindra have been making off-road vehicles since 1947, when they picked up the plans to the WW2-era Willys jeep and put them into mass production. That's a long history of building tough machines for one of the most driverunfriendly nations on earth — anyone who has ever driven on the subcontinent will agree that the roads, weather, other drivers and even wild animals make a tour through this ancient land anything but soothing. That's why it's no surprise that Mahindra's Pik-up, a rugged, ruralfocussed ute for the budget conscious, is so amazingly tough. After all, a machine designed to tackle monsoon rains, potholes which can swallow small hatchbacks, semi trucks with no brakes and unlit Morris Oxford taxis on the wrong side of the road at night should find farming life in New Zealand a breeze.
With a 2.5 litre turbo diesel offering up enough torque to stop an elephant (this test may well have actually been carried out), and a host of creature comforts including cruise control and some of the roomiest back seats in any crew cab — anywhere, this ute packs in a lot for a little price. Certainly, the on-road handling of the Pik-up is nothing like that of the more
expensive Amarok, Ranger or Hilux. Geared up for gravel and mud, the Pikup feels a little less at home on the main highway than pricier competitors. But take it to its natural habitat and that military-jeep ancestry shines through. Comparisons are bound to be made between this and the other 'new kid' on the block, the Great Wall V240, but the Mahindra edges ahead with an extra whack of torque — the all important figure when discussing working utes. The choice, for many, may come down to purchasing a new Mahindra or a second hand 'mainstream' ute, based on price alone. But when you factor in the sheer toughness of this Indian contender, it's easy to see why people are choosing to take a look at the new ute in town. After all, surviving for over 60 years in one of the harshest driving nations on earth must be the best testbed ever for building 'em strong.

RURAL WHEELS
Putting the passenger first by Andy Bryenton
There’s a sense with some UTV off-roaders on the market that one feature alone has been chosen as the engineering goal of the exercise. Whether it’s simply providing the most power, or the greatest speed, or the biggest towing capacity, this kind of arms race can end up very much like the one being waged by the ‘big three’ German car makers for maximum horsepower. That’s why the Yamaha Viking is proving so popular. It’s not focussed on simply stump-pulling torque or flatout speed. Yamaha’s engineers have taken it back to first principles, making everything about the new Viking centre on the driver and passengers. That’s passengers, plural, because one of the first things Yamaha realised was that many jobs around the farm need more than two pairs of hands. With three seats in line at the centre of the chassis and frame, the Viking builds out from the concept of safety, utility and comfort for the crew on board. This naturally led to the development team choosing a high ground clearance double wishbone front and rear suspension setup, tuned for the smoothest ride they could achieve over the harshest terrain they could find. Good thing too
SAFETY FIRST
— because Yamaha’s engine choice has made sure that despite not being all about big figures, the Viking still packs a punch. Yamaha have drawn on their motorcycle building experience, installing a big, water cooled four stroke single cylinder in the Viking. This 686cc mill provides an excellent power and torque curve, assisting in smooth handling. More importantly perhaps, the big one-pot engine allows accurate and natural-feeling engine braking, a safety feature in its own right. The choice of a large capacity one cylinder motor also means bags of pulling power, giving the Viking over 650kg towing capacity and nearly 300kg on the tray. By going back to basics, and building the new Viking around the needs of the driver and passengers, Yamaha may not have re-invented the wheel. But they have refined the concept of a UTV built for the greatest level of utility — one which even novice drivers can use to make the most out of a hard day’s work.

Heavy metal swansong by Andy Bryenton
They weren’t ready for it in 1971. Ford Australia took the XY Falcon and made it the terror of other muscle cars, spawning 300 highly sought after incarnations of the XY Falcon GTHO Phase III.
The original 351 Falcon set the benchmark high for performance and style
2014 sees the end of the line for the FPV badge, but what a way to bow out!
With 351 cubic inches of firepower under the hood from a Cleveland V8, the tyre-shredding Falcon could hit 225 kilometers per hour with the rev limiter scrapped. Allan Moffat piloted one of these machines to victory in the 1971 Bathurst 500, securing it a place in history — along with a reputation for speed which would melt your ‘70’s bell-bottoms. Now the 351 badge has returned, but with a sense of melancholy to tinge the triumph of Ford’s latest offering. The Ford Falcon GT F 351 lives up to and exceeds the benchmark set by its ‘daddy’ in the 1970s, but behind the veil of tyre smoke and that glorious V8

Your chance to buy one — slim to zero, unless those on the waiting list go mad or bankrupt. This means that FPV’s swansong will also likely become a coveted collector’s piece, which is a bit of a shame. it wasn’t made to sit still in a garage like a museum piece. It was made to drive. Because there is a definite sense, looking at this car in motion, that those who worked to make it a reality put a lot of heart and soul into what would be their final masterwork. FPv will be no more after the last GT F is made, and the antipodes in general will be a poorer place for that. But if there has to be an end of the story, it’s fitting that it should be so quintessentially brash and engaging.

rumble is the knowledge that this is the last masterpiece crafted by the highly skilled auto artists at Ford Performance Vehicles. A look at the figures confirms that this is indeed a product built out of sheer automotive exuberance. That 351 now refers to the power which is churned out by the Falcon’s engine, rather than the amount of cubes displaced. Which means that, despite the comfortable four-door executive saloon looks of the final FPV, this car can move.
351 more accurately translates to over 400 kws, with a neat function called transient overboost engaged. Basically, this overboost gives the supercharged mill a dose of hot chili, unleashing 20 percent extra power for a few (heart stopping) seconds. But only in certain conditions — leading Ford to not include the extra helping of boosted power in its official figure. Which ever way you slice it, though, that’s a lot of muscle for a modern day muscle car. With claimed 0-100kph times well under 5 seconds, this Ford looks the part, but will often be viewed by other road users only as a dwindling pair of taillights. Seeing one in the wild will be a rarity, as only 500 will ever be made.
In three days you will transect the Hollyford Valley by foot, jetboat and finally helicopter. NZ Pork signs biosecurity partnership by Kent Caddick
“This agreement gives the pork industry a place at the decision table when it comes to preparing for and managing biosecurity risks specific to our industry. This is a positive step toward sorting out a critical area for New Zealand’s economy.” Mr Carter said the structure of the GIA is indicative of MPI seeking to achieve the best outcomes for the sector.
NZPork has become one of the first organisations to sign the Deed for the Government Industry Agreement (GIA) for Biosecurity Readiness and Response.
“That’s a significant change in their approach to working with industry. I think that’s a good sign. “The rural sector needs good working relationships with government agencies around biosecurity and other issues impacting, including environmental sustainability and animal welfare. We really need to work together to find durable solutions for the sector.”

NZPork was the first animal-based industry to enter into a GIA and the second industr y overall, behind Kiwifruit Vine Health. The GIA deed sets the legal framework for NZPork’s participation with MPI in regard to readiness activities for its priority biosecurity risks. It also gives the industry an equal voice in decisions in the event of an exotic disease incursion. NZPork chairman Ian Carter said the industry continues to have concerns about how biosecurity is being managed. “But the GIA Deed creates an opportunity for us to partner with government in a very real and practical way on some priority issues.
