A recent discussion at a finance committee meeting acknowledged that many dairy farmers are facing tough times. “We recognise that dairy farmers are facing a significant downturn in the milk payout,” said committee chairwoman Jane Hennebry. “This means some will be struggling to meet various costs and others could be affected financially by the farmers’ situations.” Ratepayers have the option to pay through direct debits along with a number of other options designed to help those struggling financially. “We encourage anyone facing difficulties to contact our rates team to discuss their options.” The council’s freephone number is 0800 800 401.

“It certainly hasn’t been easy down on the farm. I hope dairy farmers are having a successful calving, and sheep and beef farmers are well set up for calving and lambing in coming weeks.” Outside the farm gate, BLNZ is running the 2015 Sheepmeat and Beef Levy Referendum and voting papers should have arrived in the mailboxes of all sheep and beef producers on the BLNZ electoral roll. The referendum, which must be held every six years under the Commodity Levies Act, seeks farmer support for continued investment of farmer money into industry-good activities like research and science, market access work, investment into attracting and supporting our future industry participants and a strong ‘farmer voice’ into policy conversations. Voting closes on September 10. To register farmers can phone 0800 233 352 or go to www.beeflambnz. co.nz

“The issue is front of mind for farmers — sheep, beef and dairy — despite it coming at a busy time of year and in the midst of a particularly challenging season,” said Taumarunui farmer and Western North Island director for Beef and Lamb New Zealand, Kirsten Bryant. “BLNZ, along with DairyNZ and Federated Farmers, is working with WorkSafe NZ and the Government to ensure legislative outcomes around health and safety are workable on farm. “At this time, we are also mindful of the stress farmers in our region are under as a result of the recent extreme weather events. Over the past six weeks BLNZ has worked with other organisations to host a series of gettogethers. We’ve seen very high farmer turnouts to these events — which reiterates how valuable it is to come together and share war stories and problem solve.” Ms Bryant says the long-awaited signs of spring are now appearing.

“A price of $3.85 per kilo of milk solids is a real shocker. There’s not going to be many farmers making anything on that payout,” he said. “First, there is the no brainer stuff. Talk to the bank manager, talk to advisers and communicate with family as they will be feeling the pressure as well. The short term is the focus at the moment, even if it means revising contracts between sharemilkers and owners so that both sides can get through to next season.” He says it is vital to have a hard look at the farm budgets as some things will have to wait. “Closely examine how much supplements you buy in as higher production at these milk prices does not mean a higher profit at the moment by any means. “There’s a new campaign on Federated Farmers dairy chair Andrew Hoggard pasture renewal. Our industry was talk of it, puts an upward pressure built on cheap grass production. Indeed renewing the pasture does cost on returns. The problem is that any — but as the Pasture Renewal Trust time you hold on to product, you are under increased pressure later on with says ‘can you afford not to renew?’ ” Mr Hoggard suggests farmers do the a larger stocked inventory. You are sums on the amount of culling, drying trading a short-term gain for a longerterm problem. off early and once a day milking. “The New Zealand and Australian “While I said it’s a no brainer to look at these things, unfortunately it’s not wool industries discovered this in the easy to come up with the right answers 1990s, when they attempted to hold wool prices by using the producer board when you do. There has been a lot of talk about organisations to buy up auction wool the value of the Global Dairy Trade and when prices were low. Prices stayed low some demands that Fonterra close and wool mountains grew. “Unlike wool, dairy products have it down. “Quite simply, Fonterra can’t close it a use-by date, and exporters put down. It’s an independent organisation themselves under huge pressure when and if Fonterra pulls out, other players they have warehouses full of dairy in the world dairy trade will still be there products close to their expiry date, especially when the customers know and prices will still be set. What is possible is that Fonterra about it. “When times come right, as they can pull back their volumes on specific certainly will do, the wider industry product lines. That is the usual response of of farmers, processors and service companies which put products into any providers, will all need to be ready to auction system. Withholding, or even pick up from where they left off.”

itch comes from a family who has farmed for many generations. He grew up on a farm until he was 14-years-old and they moved to Mt Maunganui. He became a builder until the twins were fouryears-olds. “Mitch always wanted to go back to the farm so the boys could grow up in the country. We changed careers when the boys were four and a half,” said Kylie. “I am a born and bred Waikato girl who grew up in Hamilton. I was a sales rep and used to go and get my nails and

hair done — all those city things. I said ‘we’ll give it a year, and if it doesn’t pan out we can go back to building. We are still here because we enjoy farming and we work well together.” They employ two full-time workers, Patrick Leahy and Jacob Cumming. “They are great guys who work really well together. They are always playing practical jokes which is what you need because farming can be way too serious and you need fun,” said Kylie. “Working and living in each others back pockets means we need to have a great environment to work in. won’t get the boys to do anything that he isn’t prepared to do himself. He gets stuck in with them and they appreciate that.” Kylie rears the calves, and helps relief milk when the staff are away and other odd jobs. “They tell me what to do and I do it,” she said. “We were spring calvers and always had been, but this year the owners asked what we thought of going into autumn milking as it’s always a drought. We thought it was a no brainer. “It’s so hot in January and February and we think farmers need to rethink the seasons now as they have been changing.” They will split calve again next March and the following season will be solely autumn calving. “That is our aim, although it may take a bit longer,” said Kylie. The other option was to sell the spring herd and buy an autumn herd but the couple didn’t want to get rid of the cows as they are good. “We are a very high input farm, feeding 356 days of the year with a mixture of feed. Maize is grown on the farm and turnips are used in the dry months. We cut silage for the extra bit of feed. “We predominantly love friesians. They are a solid substantial cow and very sturdy. I prefer their calves — they aren’t sooky,” said Kylie. It is a steep farm that used to be a sheep and beef farm. Kylie says it’s a real mixture with some flat bits and some really steep bits. “It’s a mixed bag and a good milking platform. We have worked hard to establish good pasture, making sure

Joel and Reid enjoy all aspects of farming life

Mitch was a builder but always wanted to return to the farming life what we put in is good for the long term. Once sheep have been on a farm it’s hard to re-establish feed. “Mitch’s dad and one of our bosses said the cheapest feed is grass, and grass grows grass. If you can do that and do it well you are set. “We start calving in March and then have a few weeks’ break and start again on July 10. I bottle feed all my new calves and personally don’t like tube feeding because I think a new baby has to learn to suck. I like them to have a bottle first feed and the next they go on the feeder. They have meal from day dot and they love it. The calves are my babies and are treated like that. There is a lot of adjusting changing from spring to autumn and it has been finding

the best and most cost effective way to do it. Grass is a big juggle, making sure we have enough for spring cows and the milkers plus the dry cows and colostrum herd. “It’s good for the cows’ wellbeing so they aren’t dealing with the heat and we get January and February off — the best time of the year. “We are happy to keep doing what we’re doing. It would be nice to buy a farm but we enjoy doing this — it’s a good lifestyle. We wouldn’t change it for anything and the boys love it.”

Flying is something that has always fascinated humans and air is just one of the realms we endeavour to conquer next to land and ocean. Now with Light Sport Aircraft, also known as Microlights becoming more accessible the futuristic vision of flying cars is one step closer to becoming a reality. we have now with a range of aircraft from wood and metal to full carbon fibre. “At the moment we have branched out to creating an Aviation Centre in Cambridge to distribute fixed wing aircraft, gyrocopters and helicopters in the Light Sport Aircraft category and can offer a range of fixed wing aircraft in various price brackets to suit any discipline.” He caters to the needs of farmers and multi-block farmers as they can have their own grass runways. Making way for mushrooms ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Mercer Mushrooms is New Zealand’s second largest producer of white button mushrooms – producing approximately 20 tonne per week. Located between Mercer and Pukekawa in the Franklin district in Northern Waikato, they employ 85 staff and are the largest single site employer in the district. The company has been in existence since 1998. It started life as Cresta Mushrooms a family owned and operated business until its sale in 2011. They undertook a refresh and rebranded to the current name of Mercer Mushrooms Limited in December 2014 with a new look — new logos and fresh look packaging, to complement the new company and a fresh approach to the market and customers. Their product is delivered fresh daily to the two main supermarket chains, fresh fruit and vegetable markets, wholesalers and local customers. They use a local delivery contractor for all deliveries and try to use their service for as much incoming freight as possible. “Here at Mercer Mushrooms we are focussed on producing a quality product in an economical, sustainable and environmentally friendly way,” says CEO of Mercer Mushrooms Ltd Jeff Hadwin. At present they control the whole

production process on site including making their own compost and producing spawned phase three substrate to grow the mushrooms from. Their main substrate raw materials, straw and peat, are sourced from the South Island, with the spawn imported from Australia. In the past four months they have spent close to $1 million on improvements utilising local contractors and new machinery from local suppliers and are looking to expand their production area with the construction of more growing rooms. Their goal is to produce 60 tonne of mushroom a week, a combination of both White and Portobello Mushrooms. The expanded facility will create more employment for the area with staff numbers expected to climb to around 150 people using local companies and labour in the construction which is expected to take between 18 and 24 months. “We have been looking internationally at design and innovative technology. With the Dutch being the world leaders in Mushroom Production technology this seemed the obvious place to start.”

Video Comparison: take your own video and compare it to the pro.

The app is comprised of three parts; a multi-angle shearing video, a shearing logbook and an entertaining woolhandling game. “We wanted to engage our trainees by utilising new technology. We also know that people in our industry are constantly moving which is what spurred us on to investigate the option of an app,” said Robert McCrone from Primary ITO, who was involved in the app’s creation. “Apart from actual in-person training, it’s difficult to show the correct shearing positions in detail. The goal of the video is to show this highly complex task that involves several manoeuvres and body positions.” A comparison video allows users to compare shearing styles and positions

with those of an expert. This provides the ability to record or use a video of themselves shearing a sheep and then view it side by side next to the professional shearing video. Trainees can then compare techniques and body positioning in order to hone certain aspects of their shearing technique. ADVERTORIAL

New product! ET250 Fertiliser with pest deterrent by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

ET250 is a new-age BioGro certified liquid spray designed to deter pests and disease. In the realm of nature, pest and disease are part of Mother Nature’s plan to keep plants healthy. When plants become sick, they resonate at a frequency that attracts pest and disease, who basically take a plant out, so that it does not propagate and weaken the species. With all the chemicals we have used over the last 50 years, we have reached a point where pest and disease have become immune to the chemical sprays, indicating that nature is stronger than chemicals. At Agrissentials we understand the nature of pest and disease and the job they do. To us there is no point in trying to eradicate pest and disease as they are part and parcel of the natural system. The ultimate answer to pest and disease problems is to get your plants on a multi-mineral, microbial rich diet and I know a fertiliser company that supplies exactly that. With a full array of minerals the plant will become healthy and resonate at a

frequency that pest and disease are not interested in. The main minerals here are the trace elements, which are the building blocks of the plant’s immune system, minerals such as iron, manganese, boron, copper, zinc, cobalt, molybdenum, selenium and chromium all essential for plant health. As Rachel Hunter once stated “it won’t happen overnight but it will happen, so Agrissentials have produced this amazing BioGro certified, completely natural pest repellent to keep the vines, orchards and pastures pest free while the plants are strengthening up their immune systems. The chemical age we have come through has not done life, in general, any favours. In actual fact it has not only caused health problems to plants, animals and people, but has been unable to control pest, diseases and

weed problems. The basic reason why chemicals have not been able to control pest, disease and weed problems is that these three natural control agents are part and parcel of nature’s checks and balances ensuring that life continues on. In reality pest, disease and weed problems indicate mineral deficiency; correct the mineral deficiency and health will ensue. Through the use of synthetic fertilisers and chemical sprays we have demineralised and destroyed the water retention quality of our soils, which in turn has put pressure on our farmers and our environment. The sooner we leave the chemical age and begin working with mother nature and looking after the free capital she provides like soil, atmospheric minerals, water, sunlight, health and vitality, the easier farming will become. So, while you transit away from chemicals and begin working alongside Mother Nature, Agrissentials can help you through that period with our multi mineral microbial rich fertilisers, restoring and remineralising your top soil for better health, better food, better production, a better farm and a better environment. If you’re having trouble

with pest and disease, don’t forget to check out our ET250, a great natural pest repellent, BioGro certified, with no harmful effects. When everything is new You have the section and now it is time to build your home — a milestone in anyone’s life. But where do you start? Once you have your architects or building company lined up, the first step is a blueprint. A plan on paper, or more likely than not in today’s world, on a computer screen. Now, with the fast-paced world we live in, people are getting used to the convenience of digital formats, allowing them to be quickly delivered by email. These house plans will usually concentrate on the architecture and the

building itself and will not usually specify interior finishes. Part of the fun of building a new home is choosing those finishes, hardware and appliances. The floor plan is probably your greatest planning tool and includes most of the critical dimensions and specs needed to build the home. They act as a kind of road map of your home, showing how the different spaces relate to each other. Many plans will include the electrical elements — lights and plugs etc. An overhead look at cabinets, plumbing and appliances can be provided here, helping you in turn to plan furnishings and colours. When you are heading into a new home, it’s important to spread the word. Be sure to file change of address forms with the post office and notify your insurance company. Look into getting electricity, internet and gas hooked up if it isn’t already so you know who your providers are.

If your new house is not already equipped with a security system, you may want to consider setting one up. This is the time to make sure you know where the electrical circuit breakers, water cutoff valves and other key aspects of your home are located and how to operate them. So then it is time for the final touches, the drapes, and carpets and the furniture. Often a new home means new appliances and furniture, and a new

start. After the final builder’s handover, you’ll have a new set of keys and a new life to live. Of course it doesn’t end there. While under construction you dwelling place will have occupied all your attention. Once inside, there’s the matter of the outside area, perhaps a garden, a patio, a pergola. The list of ongoing jobs will no doubt keep the wonder alive for some time to come.

It is only logical that the most successful projects are born out of harmonious relationships between client and architect built with the same pillars we base all our relationships on; trust, respect and communication. Many people feel more comfortable choosing an architect that has been recommended by a friend and it is important to make sure they are the right fit for you and your design. As this relationship will be long-term, a good personality fit is essential. Assertiveness and taking a healthy interest in the project is another thing clients must remember. Clients should have an active role in making sure the end result is their dream in three dimension. Organise for regular updates either over email, phone or face to face. The planning stage is especially important. Ask as many questions as it takes to fully understand the design. You are not expected to have all the answers but a clear idea of the

process is something that will make it much easier. Keeping an open mind is also important as this allows the architect freedom to express their creativity and ensure you reap the benefits of their education and experience. It is advised that clients keep well informed throughout the process and make sure you are clear about what you expect from your architect. Communicate in a way that means both parties are on the same page at all stages of the process. Involve your architect when choosing a builder. It is essential that the relationship between all three parties is collaborative. Word of mouth recommendations is a valuable way of compiling a shortlist. Request to see work of those on the list to help further the decision process. Explore magazines and contact people in the industry for further advice. Before meeting with an architect put your thoughts and expectations down on paper. This helps as a starting point and leaves room for evolution. Ask the architect to write down their understanding of what you want to check if their understanding is correct. Discuss fees and services early on to eliminate surprises down the track.

The positive power of oxygen Modern regulation regarding farm effluent storage and use have led to the growth - both in size and in number - of effluent ponds dotting the rural landscape.

A vital link in the chain between a messy problem and a productive, pasturepromoting solution, the principle which drives these ponds is well understood by science. And in that process oxygen plays a key role, helping nurture good bacteria and break down effluent from waste into fertiliser. This means aeration is a priority — and now a new device has been developed

here in New Zealand to guarantee superior aeration of farm effluent ponds. The Aquarator 2.0 is touted as a ‘farm friendly’ leap forward in simple, robust and effective aeration technology, and with its lightweight construction and ease of use, it is sure to prove popular with a farming sector seeking new, smart and cost effective options. The key to the Aquarator 2.0’s power is its constant action, oxygenating the water with a powerful stream of bubbles while also stirring up sediment and not allowing it to form a mucky strata on the bottom of the pond. AQUARATOR 2.0 Brand new FARM FRIENDLY invention in Aerators!

THE AQUARATOR 2.0 IS NOT A NEW TECHNOLOGY, BUT IT IS TECHNOLOGY NEWLY AVAILABLE TO DAIRY FARMERS. The Aquarator 2.0 represents a new benchmark in mixing and aeration capability. Invented, designed and built in New Zealand, by New Zealanders specifically for New Zealand pond conditions with dairy effluent specifically in mind. Benefits: • Continuous water turnover eliminating stratification throughout the pond. • Delivers more dissolved oxygen to the water than many other more expensive devices • Low energy costs per Kg of DO delivered • Eliminates trapped nitrogen and ammonia gases. • Provides oxygen to convert ammonia • Improves effluent quality. • Fully submersible with no adverse effects or damage to the unit. • Little to NO maintenance for 5 years. • Will minimise solids build up and/or crusting on pond. • HDPE with no moving mechanical parts – the pond liner is safe! • Suitable for pond depths of 1.2m or greater

no silting up — and as that sludge is reduced to particles and attacked by happy, oxygen-fed bacteria the natural pond process is enhanced. Dissolved oxygen also degrades ammonia and encourages the release of nitrogen into the atmosphere, leaving behind nutrients easily uptaken by crops and pasture. The Aquarator’s party piece is fitting all of this tech into a trailer-mobile unit, light enough to be lifted by a team of four, and all without moving parts. Years of reliable use can be expected with minimal maintenance — just the ticket for busy farmers!

It’s a trend in modern utes — when the core product reaches a certain stage in its shelf life, manufacturers take out the pad and paper to give it a facelift.

Standard Amarok was already a contender for top ute — now it’s been given the Dark Label treatment

Sometimes a rummage through the parts bin adds bigger wheels, beefier suspension, roll bars and nudge bars and acres of lamps. There are already two utes on the market which have followed this formula, tagging themselves with a permutation of AMG-Mercedes’ marketing speak. The Toyota Hilux Black Edition and the Holden Colorado Black Edition shamelessly borrow the chic of the howlingly mad AMG Black Edition sports cars, famously spine-pulverising Nürburgring attack dogs designed to make already loopy AMG-tuned Mercs into weapons of speed-limit destruction. Now another German brand has picked up the Black Edition fever — though their proximity to Mercedes HQ has seen them change the terminology slightly. The Volkswagen Amarok Dark Label edition tweaks the popular ute with the addition of a little bit of everything a dab of style with huge alloy rims and alcantara trim, a touch of sports-car DNA from the company’s Golf GTi heritage with a fat steering wheel and carbon fibre accents, and a whole lot of serious off-road truck bling in the form of matt black steel bars, steps and blindingly

powerful bi-xenon headlights. There’s even an under-ride guard to protect the underbody and drivetrain. So far so good, and the Amarok is a competent ute on which to build this Dark Label monument. Euro priced, but definitely Euro specced, the Amarok can safely have its name uttered in the rarefied company of the Hilux and Ranger. VW have also added heated seats to the Dark Label, which plays into a pervasive way of thinking about what is, at it’s core, as much of a rough and tumble working man’s ute as any Japanese or American offering. If a traditional ute is like the workman it serves, then the Amarok has the cachet of being a bit like that other guy on the worksite — the one who wears boots and a hard hat, but who also wears a shirt and tie. Sure, he might have a bigger pay cheque and drive home on heated alcantara, but those hands never get dirty. A shame in this analogy, because many Dark Label Amaroks will share the same fate. Supremely confident and well set up utes which may never see an hour off the tarmac.

RURAL WHEELS

One sharp contender by Andy Bryenton

In all forms of motorsport, the kind of ‘blue sky’ design and development used to dominate the racetrack fulfills a practical purpose for more prosaic application as well. Those advances in weight saving, safety, power and handling engineered to provide podium finishes filter through to the workaday vehicles which make up the bulk of any marque’s stable, in turn spurring sales and generating enough company revenue to tackle another grueling year of high-speed autosport. It’s very much the same for today’s modern off road machines as it is for those road cars which have brandname brothers in WRC and Formula One competition. Big races can make or break products, and occasionally whole companies. And nothing tests drivers and machines likes the insane Baja 1000, a race which traverses some of the most rugged desert in Mexico. This race made the names of both Mickey Thompson and Ivan Stewart, and in 2014 it was the proving ground for a field of 19 ‘class 19’ UTVs. Only eight would finish, with a one-two through the gate going to Polaris RZRs. Lessons learned on the anvil of desert sand would be taken back to the lab to create even more powerful, durable machines. So we can now welcome the

Polaris RZR 1000 XP ‘White Lightning’, a formidable four wheel drive, 110 horsepower, double overhead cam missile which takes on the turbocharged Maverick at the top of the UTV table. It’s an exercise in superlatives, with more power, 110 horsepower used to be road sports car territory not long ago. Longer suspension travel, better cooling systems, and more grip to provide what Polaris are calling their smoothest ride ever. Truly, this is a machine which demands your full attention for a test drive. Beyond the smoke and velocity, the RZR 1000 XP carries a serious message for the rest of the Polaris bloodline. It’s a simple one. If Polaris can manufacture a machine to conquer the Baja and trails from Canada to Kathmandu putting down all those horses and taking the tough knocks, then their farming and hunting range just slightly down the power band must share that engineering know how. That bodes very well for Polaris overall. If you feel the need for extreme off road speed, the evidence of those podium finishes speaks for itself.

In a recent discussion with former MP Ross Meurant, I heard the view that “a bloated and overpaid bureaucracy of self promoting ‘experts’ at Fonterra HQ is a contributing factor, but it is not the cause of today’s crisis.” “Blind faith by too many farmers in Fonterra as the salvation of dairy farming and believing the torrent of misleading use of statistical data to perpetuate the myth that Fonterra is a ‘price setter’ on the international milk market, is a contributing factor,“ Ross says. “That the country produces a mere 2.8% of the world’s cow’s milk puts the power of Fonterra as a price setter in perspective. “We need to step beyond the torrent of excuses, false blame and erroneous causes being promoted.” Ross goes on to say that “the embryo of the current problem lies with America coercing EU to sanction Russia over the dispute in Crimea. The ‘dairy crisis proper’ started when Russian counter sanctions against the EU began. “The result has been a flood of food

products including dairy across Europe and it is this over supply of dairy product which is the problem for the Kiwi dairy farmer. “The economic implications will rapidly spread across rural New Zealand. Reduced farmer spending equals contractors laid off, expanding the drop in rural consumer spending. From car sales people losing bonuses to the local coffee shop enduring reduced business throughout; economic grief in the provinces is nigh. And it’s going to get worse. It won’t go away next year. “I have constant contact with Russia. I see Russia turning inwards, President Putin encouraging local farmers to greater production and extending the ‘buy local’ policy. This recharging of Russian farmers and old allies make Putin enormously popular. It also lays

the foundations for increased dairy and beef production at home, and by now I trust you begin to join the dots. The problem for dairy in New Zealand is over supply of dairy product in Europe caused by counter sanctions applied by Russia in response to the initial sanctions imposed by America via its puppets. “New Zealand need not be swamped by the economic disaster. New Zealand has not been sanctioned by Russia! Russia will still buy our dairy products and our beef! During a meeting I recently had with a senior minister I asked why New Zealand was not taking up the opportunity to sell dairy and beef to Russia? “The answer, in polite translation,” said Ross, “is that New Zealand didn’t want to be the odd one out of the American club.”

“We have always been involved with horses on the farm and polo, then with our son we became involved in pony club, hunting and show jumping. The passion for his show jumping has led us to move here, where we breed showjumpers based on our imported warmbloods,” said Liz. “Our son Josh trains, competes and gives lessons. With wanting the best for horses, he has spent time in Germany, talking to some of the world’s best arena builders. “We are now using some of that technology within our arena building business. We have learnt with our own arena, the importance of getting it right, which now has great footing, even straight after heavy rain. “With such a good arena we have the facilities to train and work horses for clients.” Josh came across stable carts while visiting Ireland — see advertisement for Barker Barrows — and realising there

was nothing like this here, they imported a container load. They are lightweight and easy to handle 200 litre ultra violet stabilised barrows with two wheels which makes them stable. The barrows are great for many things including

mucking out, using as a feed cart, gardening, or an ice bucket for parties. “The barrows are a great time saver, and can be used in many situations.” For more information go to www. qualitysporthorses.com

New safety game for children

23

As part of DairyNZ’s education programme for children a new free online farm safety game that can be played on smartphones, computers and tablets is the latest innovation in the quest to improve farm safety. Industry body DairyNZ’s cowbassador, Rosie the Cow, has teamed up with WorkSafe and ACC to create Farm Rules!, an engaging way for primary school children to learn about the risks involved with certain farm activities and how to minimise or avoid them. Farm Rules! has children avoiding surprise dangers while tackling the challenges of farm life. From driving tractors and avoiding cow pats, players learn how to navigate through challenges to win the most points. With bright graphics and plenty of sneaky scenarios, players can become a farmer for a day moving cows, driving quad bikes and tractors, fixing broken fences and spraying gorse. They have to try to do all the farm work while avoiding surprise dangers. DairyNZ’s brand marketing manager, Andrew Fraser, says he thinks the new game will encourage some interesting conversations between kids and their parents.

“We all know how our children very quickly challenge us based on what they have learnt or seen. Children do a lot of their learning online now and games are a great way of interacting with them about various issues. “We think we’ll reach a lot of adults with a game like this in a roundabout kind of way. It will certainly raise awareness and create situations where the kids are advising their parents about what’s a risk and how to stay safe on a farm,” he says. “It’s also a great way to entertain your kids while helping them learn about how to stay safe on a farm.” Rosie is the cow character DairyNZ uses to help children learn about farming, cows and how milk is produced. “She has her own Facebook page and visits schools and community events. She is the key educator in our schools’ programme where we provide a range of online resources for teachers that they can use in classrooms to teach everything from history to science to

research skills. So far we’ve also had more than 5,500 children visit dairy farmers as part of the Rosie’s World Find a Farmer programme and 900 parents have attended one of those farm visits too. This is the second computer game we have created and it

Pay attention!

all helps children, both urban and rural, to learn more about farming and how milk is produced,” says Andrew. The new Farm Rules! game can be played online at www.rosiesworld.co.nz and is also available as an app for Apple and Android smartphones and tablets.
